I finally just saw my first commercial for the DVD on Toon Disney! It followed an ad for the Gargoyles Friday Nights of Fright, and was rather brief (I swear like 6 seconds!), but cool nonetheless - though something like Siren's ad would have been way more interesting and attention grabbing. This ad just shot out that it was a 2-disc set and available on Dec. 7, and grouped it with some random screenshots...but at least it was a commercial!

I'll switch my colour for this post, just so that there's not a whole whack of dark-cyan posts in a row.

<<Actually, I wanted Demona to *succeed* and survive, only to become a pariah to any gargoyles who found out.>> To me, that would kill the whole central conflict of the show - gargoyles and humans, struggling to understand and accept each other.

<<Actually, I felt cheated that the gargoyles survived. Their deaths, while depressing, would have been more logical to me.>> Sure, it would have been "logical"...but it would have wrecked the show. The series was about these characters, how the grew, changed and matured. I watched the show to see that character development and the interactions between Goliath, Brooklyn, Broadway, Lexington, Hudson, etc. Having them all die in the explosion could have made logical sense, but it would have been a sucky, "jump the shark" moment for the show that would have had me, and most of the other fans I know, just shut it off and stay content with reruns. Having all the main characters die would have felt like a horrific cheat - "I watched this show for two years and this is where they end it?" Nevermind the Demona angle and all that; she's a fascinating character, but she's not the point, and Arthur and Griff are fascinating minor players, but minor players all the same.

Don't get me wrong; I think your idea would be neet to explore in an A/U fanfic. But if Hunter's Moon had ended that way...well, suffice it to say, I'd have been pretty ticked off and I wouldn;t be buying DVDs.

Yup. That demon sure is a wicked beast. You must understand, my favorite series finales were those of Newhart and St. Elsewhere. (I'm sure there's info on the 'net about them, if you're curious). Actually, I wanted Demona to *succeed* and survive, only to become a pariah to any gargoyles who found out. Many would, as the clans would discover eachother on shortwave radio, via Internet message boards, and so on as they noticed *all* of the humans dying. Life would continue, albeit in a totally different manner.

That would kill most spinoff ideas, though. Thus, I went with the standard "heroes save the day" ending forced upon most TV series.

"Gratuitous ending>> Actually, I felt cheated that the gargoyles survived. Their deaths, while depressing, would have been more logical to me.

Bomb smuggling>> Hey, I figure Jason has access to the inside of the building. They could to smuggle a suitcase as evidence (another Hunter pretending to be a criminal, perhaps?), a suitcase that happens to have plastique explosives in it with a timer detonator, undetectable to metal detectors. Then, have Jason switch the device with a empty suitcase (maybe have him secretely remove the bomb from one suitcase and put it in the empty one), run up to the top of the clock tower to plant the bomb, and depart when his shift is over, leaving the personality of Jason the police officer behind. (Faking his own death would be a bonus.Getting everyone to expect him to leave for his home precinct would be even better.)

There would be more hurtles, but I figure that if the Hunter's could acquire the conspicuous aircraft, they could handle it.

JJ Gregarius> It's a neat creativity demon, though it would have killed the show for me, and I wouldn't have watched any more. I watched Gargoyles to watch the adventures of the Manhattan Clan, not King Arthur and Griff. They were neat as an occasional foray into different stories, but as the focus of the show, after a gratuitous ending like that...well, after I would pick up the remote control from where I threw it at the TV, I wouldn't have tuned in anymore.

I'm probably in a small minority in that I wasn't excited by any of the spinoff series. I would have preferred a continued focus on the main show, with all of the other threads worked into themes that would recur throughout the series.

My computer doesn't have DVD capacity. It's five years old or so, and it's gone through a few tough times lately, so I hesitate to make any changes with it for fear of killing it.

GREGARIUS - That is one very strange creativity demon. I don't know if Avalon would have actually sent King Arthur and Griff to New York in time, since Arthur had parted ways with the skiff after arriving in London, though the notion of Arthur saving the day against Demona's scheme is appealing (it might even have been Britain's greatest hour of need, since all the humans in Britain - alongside the rest of the world - would have died if Demona had unleashed her plague).

While the aircraft was conspicuous, I think that installing the bomb would have had the problem of getting into the clock tower to begin with - especially if you're smuggling a bomb in there, right through the police station. And it's possible that the Hunters lacked the patience to try that.

Thats a 16X dual layer DVD burner ($75, with free shipping) by NEC (which is a good brand). Thats also a DAMN good price for a burner since my 4x single layer (burns to +R/RW and -R/RW, but not dual layer media) cost about the same a, little over a year ago. I'd act on this pretty quickly if you're in the market for a DVD drive.

DVD players around here (Florida) have been as low as $30 on special one day sales at Target and stuff. Those are the very limited quanities, door-buster, stand at the door at 4AM in a mile long line, and then fight the fat lady to get your hands on the last one kinda DVD players, but they work ;)

All my DVD players were $80 regularly and work great.

Most newer computers usually just give you the option of CD-RW/R drive or DVD-ROM. DVD-ROMS cost about the same as a regular DVD player, $70-150 for most.

And Todd, Walmart/Kmart does have layaway ;)

I think I have a "creative demon," if I interprete that phrase correctly, about "Hunter's Moon."

First, I imagine the Hunter's placing a bomb on the top level of the Clock Tower instead of the missle strike from the attention-getting aircraft. It just feels better.

Second, I imagine the Mahattan clan *being killed*. I then have Arthur and Griff stumbling upon Demona and the Hunter's battle, saving humanity, etc.(Avalon sends you where you need to be, and all that) The series would be replaced with "Pendragon."

Kris>The mass purchase date is the same day as release. Decemember 7th. Best to purchase it from Amazon, but any large retailer (Walmart, Best Buy, etc) is good too

Two things:

1.) The Gargoyles trailer has hit the 300 mark for downloads :) And it's fine if you download it several times :)

2.) A neighbor of mine used my comp last night and I told her about Gargoyles coming to DVD. She as a 15 and 6 year old son. Her 15 LOVED the show she said but lost track of it after they moved. So she was happy to hear about the release. And she plans to pick up a copy. :D

I've also thrown up the links for Amazon and my trailer at other message boards which have nothing to do with Gargs, just local boards around my town, got several hits from those.

Victoria> You aren't losing your mind. I, too, noticed that the page had disappeared. The one with 8 reviews is actually Amazon's *old* page for the DVD, before there was any info released about it (after which--instead of merely updating that page--they decided to make a second site for the DVD, which just added to the confusion). If they've now suddenly realized that they have two sites and decided to delete one, it may be that they deleted the wrong one (d'oh!). I hope this isn't the case, as we'll have a hard time getting those 60 people to repost their reviews. Then again, maybe Amazon simply couldn't believe that a DVD that hadn't been released yet could already have that many reviews, and figured it was a hoax of some kind and that it was better off clearing the whole thing. :p

Victoria: I just went to the website to check. I remember that Gargoyles was listed twice - one as "not yet released" and the other one (that you can't find) is the one with 60 reviews and being released Dec 7th. Why Amazon had it listed twice, who knows.

I looked up "Gargoyles" under DVD and it says there are 4 listings - one is that Gargoyles movie, one is the 8-reviews Gargoyles, and the other two don't even show up. It's very odd.

Bad Amazon!!!

I'm all registered for the Gathering...a poorer college student this evening than I was this morning, but well worth it :)

And uhhhh...maybe the night is playing tricks on my mind, but I just went over to Amazon to check if we've gotten anymore reviews for the DVD. We're still at 60, but what has me boggled is what is going on with the page.
First when I checked it the page stated the DVD was sold-out.
But when I refreshed the page it suddenly said the item was no longer in the Amazon catalogue.
And now the link doesn't work anymore and when I did a new search for the DVD, it was under a different link and had only 8 reviews.
Am I losing my mind or something?

Returning to John Rhys-Davies' acting career - he not only played Gimli in the Lord of the Rings movies, but also supplied the voice of Treebeard. This is particularly appropriate, in an odd way, since part of the inspiration for the Ents in Tolkien's work came from "Macbeth - to be precise, the Birnam Wood scene. Tolkien once mentioned that he was disappointed over how Birnam Wood's coming to Dunsinane was portrayed as Malcolm and Macduff's army using the tree branches for camouflage, and thought that it would have been better to have had the trees of the forest uproot themselves and join in the attack on Macbeth. And so he brought the Ents and their defeat of Saruman and his forces into the Lord of the Rings as, in part, his way of saying "This is what Shakespeare *ought* to have done."

Incidentally, I was just reading the bio of John Rhys-Davies in a book that I have about the making of the Lord of the Rings movies. It doesn't mention his being a voice actor in "Gargoyles", but it says that he'd actually played Macbeth on stage, which is certainly very interesting. Not only that, but other Shakespearean stage roles of his have been Othello and Falstaff; Othello, of course, got into "Gargoyles" indirectly via Coldstone, and Greg Weisman had plans to include a modern-day namesake of Falstaff in "Bad Guys" (which would certainly have been appropriate, in light of his having decided on "Harry Monmouth" - an a.k.a. of Prince Hal's - as Dingo's real name).

Voyaging off-topic, are we?

Anyway, I think part of the problem with Janeway was that int trying to make a woman captain that was "feminine" and not "masculine," the creators took away the qualities such a woman would need to lead. A character more like Maj. Kira or Lt. Cmdr(?) Dax would have been more appropriate WRT leadership IMHO.

I never got into Voyager, only at the beginning. I remember watching the premiere episode and watching some eps after that. I think I watched a little bit through the second season because I remember the Amelia Earhart episode, and I think that was in season 2.

Anyway, then I stopped watching, I don't remember when. And when we moved in 1997 we didn't get UPN, so I couldn't watch even if I wanted to.

So I never knew how 7 of 9 entered the scene or anything. I don't even know what happened to Kes (she and Neelix made a cute couple).

TNG was the best Trek series, in my opinion. Followed by the original series, then DS9, and finally Voyager. I've only seen an episode or two of Enterprise - its okay I guess, but I just haven't really gotten into it.

Anyway. Concerning holidecks:

It would be SOOO much fun of they existed. As long as it didn't screw up (and you could really get hurt, or get stuck inside) it would be great. I don't think I'd do detective stuff like Picard was fond of doing, but it'd be cool to play out movies or books and become your favorite character.

That's my two cents... well, maybe 4 cents - I wrote a lot!

Keep those reviews coming on Amazon, there's still only 60!!!

Voyager Holodeck - yeah, I liked the episodes with Paris and Kim playing pulp science fiction heroes. *^_^* I didn't watch much of Voyager, as I didn't much like the initial run of Voyager and by the time it got better a slew of other sci-fi had already caught my interest. But of the Voyager Holo episodes, I liked the World War II double episode.

Star Trek went kind of screwy after Next Generation and Deep Space 9. Which is so disappointing as there was a ton of sf writing talent that grew up on Star Trek, you'd think that when Voyager popped up they'd have had an A list writing group taking care of their Cash Cow. They had the money for the best, why didn't they have better scripts for those initial first seasons?

Kate Mulgrew is a very good actress, but I don't think the character for Janeway was the type to engage the interest of an audience. She was boring, and for all that Kate M is quite attractive of feature, Janeway comes off very plain and sexless for the majority of the time. I didn't have the sympathy, or respect for the character Janeway the way I did for Picard or Sisko. Mulgrew comes off as extremely sexy just being the voice for Titania and Anastacia, so it's not a lack of ability on the actor's part, it's just that Janeway was a vastly dull character, and except when she's pulled OUT of character, say like with the Holodeck having to play Evil Queen Arachnia (or something like that?) that she really sparks any interest.

Well, just a few thoughs. Off to get stuff done now.

Vinnie: (Sliders half seasons) Technicality :)

I decided to season and see what I found about the length of TV series seasons. The following's what I found:

Americans call a short run lasting less than a year a season; Europeans call this a series. This season or series usually consists of 10-24 installments of the series.

---

There's 52 weeks in a year, meaning when the show's not on, it's reruns or preempted or something.... Nice, eh?

probably helps that there wasn't a ship counselor, and the doctor that Voyager did have was a hologram, so he was perhaps biased to not raise any objection to her being in the holodeck all the time.

to be honest, as far as i remmeber, there wasn't one holodeck on Voyager episode taht i liked.

Yes, John Rhys-Davies played Leonardo DaVinci on the holodeck in "Star Trek: Voyager." It's funny... when Lt. Barclay fell into a rut where he was spending all his time in the holodeck on "TNG", it meant that he had psychological problems. But when Janeway did it, no one batted an eye.

My favorite episode involving the holodeck, though, has to be the one where the aliens thought that Tom Paris's little Buck Rogers styled program was reality, and Janeway was forced to dress up as a character who was basically a female version of Emperor Ming from "Flash Gordon."

Patrick: John Rhys-Davies also had a small holographic role in Star Trek Voyager, but personally I think that was a waste of his talents. Star Trek fans might think differently though.

The 'newest' tribute to Sliders? (ok, so the show's on it's 8th season...) is Stargate. Too many similarities... A group of 4, one doctor/professor, one female, (you could say one black person).. wormholes... though they don't go to alternate earths (except for Atlantis.. yeah..) It's gotten a bit confusing for me (just getting into it.. lol.. I first saw it when it was on Showtime... yeah) ANYWAYS

Yeah.. sooo.. Gargoyles DVD, Dec 7. :D

Re: Sliders.

The reason I brought it up (beisde JRD is on it) is Sliders was recently released on DVD. At least, seasons 1 & 2 are. I do believe Wade left either that year or the next, with Arturo following; though I could be mixing up the dates and such.

That's weird that it freezes.. because the frame page is on my site, but the only file NOT on my account is the current CR... and I'm using the same coding that's used for this... I made sure when I updated it that it was correct... hmm.

Of the reviews I've read so far, they were all so fantastic. I know you mostly likely enjoyed doing the reviews, but it was still so cool of you to take it upon yourself to review every episode. I always loved seeing your particular insight on each of the episodes, and many times you reminded me of wonderful moments I'd forgotten or that had faded from memory, and why I liked certain episodes or characters so much. You're the best!

Well, here's my ramble for the final episode of Season Two of "Gargoyles", "Hunter's Moon Part Three". After that, the series is essentially over (apart from "The Journey", which I never taped) since very few of us want to view the rest of the Goliath Chronicles as canon.

Fewer echoes of "Awakening" here, though we do get the bit where Goliath reaches out to catch Elisa as she's falling - and this time doesn't succeed in saving her. And we have the final scene between Goliath and Elisa atop Castle Wyvern while the rest of the clan is talking below to precede it. But the most memorable (and chilling) echo of all has to be Jon Canmore's cry of "What have I - what have they done?"

We start with the flashback of Demona killing Charles Canmore while helping herself to the Praying Gargoyle. I can't help but see this as a twisted parody of the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents in front of him as a boy, since the Hunters are clearly Batman-influenced figures.

Then flash forward to the destruction of the clock tower, Elisa discovering Jason's true identity, and the gargoyles escaping. Jon Canmore spares them - but instead of arguing with Robyn that they should discontinue the hunt, simply pretends that they all died, and then when he knows that she wasn't taken in by his lie, says "Well, we'll never catch them now." The moment that Robyn says that she knows how to flush them out, we immediately cut to Jon's phony broadcast, without even a hint that Jon protested against framing the gargoyles. The fact that Jon gives in too easily is a foreshadowing of what is to come, and a good one at that.

We get a few familiar faces watching Jon's broadcast: I recall the yuppie couple, the Jogger, and the guy from the pool hall that Elisa was threatening in "Protection".

We learn at the start of Act Two, while Elisa and Matt are visiting Chavez in the hospital, about the Hunters' surname being Canmore (though it also gets mentioned in the flashback), which makes clear where they came from. (Though not everything; obviously something big must have happened to make Duncan and Canmore's descendants take up the hunt again - and in a different form than the original. Remember that the original purpose of Duncan and Canmore's being Hunters was their feud with Macbeth over the succession to the Scottish crown, and although they didn't like gargoyles that much, Demona and her clan weren't as big a priority. Now they've forgotten about Macbeth and the Scottish throne and are going after gargoyles with a more direct intensity, akin to Gillecomgain.)

Pity that the scene between Elisa and Jason at the ruins of the clock tower was cut, especially in light of the moment when Jason has to confess that he doesn't know why they're even pursuing the gargoyles; the feud's gone on so long that nobody remembers what started it any more. A sad but accurate statement about the nature of vendettas.

Some great lines in the scene where Elisa's urging Goliath to give up the feud with the Hunters. Especially:

ANGELA: Look at what this feud has already cost us.

GOLIATH: That's exactly why we must have vengeance!

HUDSON: Or maybe that's why we should let it go.

Jon displays his weakness again at the dam, where he makes no effort to stop the fight. Elisa is actively urging Goliath and Jason to call the feud off; Jon, when she asks him to help, merely says, "I wish that I could." Again, his change for the worst is being built up on believable foundations.

Then we get the moment where Elisa and Jason are seemingly lost in the fall off the dam. Goliath is driven all the more mad with grief, even blaming the Hunters for what was his own act, a la Demona. And Jon undergoes his reversal from a half-hearted supporter of the gargoyles to a full-fledged gargoyle-hater. I find myself reminded of Yeats' remark in "The Second Coming" about "the best lack any conviction", while the worst have plenty of it. (I can't remember the exact lines at the moment.) It is unfortunate that Jon Canmore should fulfill both lines at different points.

We get the big showdown at St. Damien's. For once, Brooklyn's feud with Demona may be a good thing, since it apparently slows her down in her preparation of the plague long enough for Goliath and the rest to finally show up and stop her. Jason shows himself to be, despite his faults, a stronger man than his brother when, after learning the truth about the gargoyles, he doesn't back down in defending them, and even takes a shot for Goliath. (Leading to Jon's aforesaid chilling line.)

Goliath risks his life to save humanity from Demona's scheme - a double risk, not only from the vial, but from the humans themselves who, their lives preserved thanks to his intervention, are able to go on attacking the gargoyles in "lynch mob mode" (though thank goodness that Matt and Officer Morgan didn't succumb to the atmosphere). I like Elisa's response to Robyn's comments on this act: "That's what he is. That's what he does."

Xanatos saves the gargs and takes them back to the castle where they can live in peace. Elisa visits Jason at the hospital, promising to help him heal, but telling him that Goliath will have to come first in her heart. She mentions that Jon and Demona are out there hunting each other (no doubt a way of semi-closure for them in case there wasn't a Season Three).

And then Castle Wyvern. Elisa still seems sceptical about Xanatos's intentions, but he assures her that the feud is over. "He's waiting for you."

And after their reunion with the "full circle" remark, we get the kiss that no doubt so many fans were eagerly waiting for. (Perhaps my favorite comment on that moment comes from a brief fanfic by Batya Levin, where Xanatos stops by shortly afterwards, sees the stone Goliath with a smile on his face, and comments, "Well, somebody's had an interesting night.")

And with the words "Welcome home, Goliath. Welcome home." the second season ends - as does my Summer Gargoyles Tapes Review.

Anyone going to the Star Trek convention in June/July? There's an idea!

Patricia > What browser are you using? I use Mozilla 1.7. It acts like it's submitting, but then "Freezes".

Does anybody know about the disc art for the DVD or the "collector's edition" that they showed off at ComiCon (that was separtate from the cover art that was shown in the ad). I can't find any pictures and the ComiCon people are ignoring my emails! :( Does anyone have any pictures from this?

And about that link about the gargoyles costumes. It mentioned "Dreamie" made "fold-and-cloak"-able wings. Does anybody know where I can get some instructions on those? I tried a search on google, but I got nothing.

And god bless the soul of Rodney Dangerfield.

I think the change of format on "Sliders" might have come about out of fear that they were becoming a redux "Quantum Leap." But when nearly everyone in you main cast starts demanding to be written out of the show... that's when the writers should know there's a problem. John Rhys-Davies was only the first to jump ship.

The show did have its moments, though. Rembrant Brown's song title "(I've got) Tears in My 'Fro (from standing on my head cryin' over you)" has thegot to be funniest I've ever heard not attached to a country-western tune.

Yeah, Sliders died for me about the same time they killed off Arturo. Kinda the same thing for X-Files for me. I loved that show until Mulder went away, then it just went downhill to me and I stopped watching it. Shame, both those shows were awesome in their earlier seasons.
And that is so sad abour Dangerfield. He was always one of those people I thought would always be around, no matter what.
Amazon reviews have gotten rather stalled. We were doing so well getting at least 1 or 2 a day...I hope it gets active again soon.

Patricia: I remember Sliders. My family and I watched it when it first came out. I'll never forget the same taxi driver that was in a lot of the first worlds they visited (in the first ep, they gave him money but it was Russian or something?) That was a great show.

I never liked the whole alien guys (Kromags) and the last couple of seasons was the worst (Rembrandt was the only regular that stayed on throughout!) Without the original Quinn in the last season it wasn't the same, since HELLO, he was the one who created sliding in the first place. And the whole adopted-from-another-dimension stuff? And his brother too? I never liked that too much.

Otherwise, it was a great show, I hope to get the first few seasons on DVD (how many seasons were there in all??)

When the professor was killed off, I was sad, but it wasn't terrible at that point (I like Maggie). I think the turning point was when Wade was taken by the Kromags (I don't think I saw that episode though). And as I said earlier, Quinn's brother (Colin?) annoyed me. Whenever I watch the reruns and he's on, I CRINGE!!!

Siren>>Great work on the DVD promotional video. We were responsible for several of those downloads; I saw it and then had to show it to the kids. They had lots of praise for it too.

Sliders>>I would agree that the first few seasons were pretty good, but it went downhill fast after the professor was killed. I still have a few of those early episodes on tape somewhere...

Hunter's Moon>>I watched all 3 parts over the past weekend. Have you noticed that when Jon (as the reporter) is grilling Matt about gargoyles, he slips into his accent when Matt surpises him with the revelation about Easter Island and aliens?

Patrick>>Happy (very) belated birthday.

A moment of respect for Rodney Dangerfield, 1921-2004.

The first season of "Sliders" was good. The second was okay, and then I think the writers started smoking some bad weed because things went south in a hurry. It was "Xena" syndrome, plain and simple. I stopped watching "Sliders" for good when they killed off Prof. Arturo. And Jerry O'Connell, who played Quinn Mallory, is the actor who is now appearing in "Crossing Jordan."

62 days left until the spell is broken and they live again! Gargoyles Season One comes to DVD on December 7, 2004!

Greg Weisman finally cleared all 33 questions asked by anonymous on September 30.

Here's the quote: "Whoah. I thought September 30th, 2002 would never end."

Todd, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there are anymore floods of questions asked by the same person on the same day aside from the Gathering Journals.

I loved Sliders, especially when they answered several "What if" questions with different universes. The most amusing one, IMO, is the one where the sliders couldn't buy food or drink without a written note from a doctor. (An extremely high percentage of the population of that world were lawyers.) Even though the writers only showed a brief glance at that world, I still remember it. BTW, one of my professors at my college looks exactly like one of the characters on Sliders who now shows up on "Crossing Jordan" from time to time. I can't think of the actor's name.

80 more questions from the year 2002 are left in the backlog.

Wow.......it's been a really, really long time since I've been in this room. <p>Rumor heard, and I can't believe it's true ....... DCP (Disney Consumer Products) is considering re-releasing Gargoyles merchandise other then the DVD. What that is I don't know, I saw the old style guide and made a comment.<p> As for TGC on DVD, IF they where to put the show out, they (TV Animation) need to fix the last episode and include the retakes that were completed by Disney Animation Japan, about thirteen to fourteen total "must have" retakes that should have been in the show before it aired that fatefull last Saturday. They were completed and never made it to Canada in time. Exp. the DX of the helicopter light that the characters disappear into by the train near the end of- that was fixed. TTFN!!!

Hasn't it already been proven that gargoyles are immune to water? Goliath fell into the river in "Re-Awakening", and was in danger of drowning, but only in the way that anyone would have been in danger of drowning under the circumstances. The gargoyles glide out into the rain to fight Oberon in "The Gathering Part Two" with no sign of any trouble. We see a few other occasions of them falling into water throughout the series with no sign that water is deadly to them in the same way that, say, iron is to the Third Race.

Saw my tape of "Hunter's Moon Part Two" today. A few comments on it.

As before, one thing that's worth looking for is the echoes of "Awakening". Jason Canmore's "What could be strong enough to leave clawmarks in solid steel?" line is one of them, of course. Another is Goliath and Demona teaming up on board the Hunters' airship. A third is Goliath getting a transmitter secretly placed on him. (And this time, we know when and how it happened; the moment when Robyn slaps Goliath on the back as she herds the gargoyles into the brig. Another example of "Gargoyles" playing fair with the audience.)

In the Renaissance Florence flashback, if you look closely, you can see the famous Brunelleschi dome in the background just before we cut to Demona planning to break into the house where the Medici Tablet is kept.

The conclusion of the Renaissance Hunter tidbit is rather amusing; we see the Hunter fuming about Demona having escaped him while she's right behind him, climbing out of the river with a smirk on her face. I'm going to be charitable to the guy and assume that he simply didn't see her because his back was turned to her, although, with her this close by while he's uttering his furied cries of "The hunt is not over!", it does make him look as if he's simply cursing in impotent fury when he could have been continuing to go after her.

Elisa saves Angela's life with CPR. Too bad that Goliath didn't tell Demona about that at the same time that he told her about how the Hunters had almost killed Angela. I'd certainly like to see Demona's response to that bit of information.

An amusing little moment comes when Matt, cornered by Jon Canmore for an interview, starts talking about Nokkar and Easter Island. (Clearly he's learned a few of the details about the Avalon World Tour by now.) And it would be just perfect for a conspiracy theorist like Matt to delve a little into "ancient astronauts mythology", too.

The scene where Elisa and Jason are in the car outside the warehouse is a great one, as they get closer. There's a particularly delicious piece of irony about how Elisa doesn't know that Jason was the masked Hunter who almost killed Angela and Jason doesn't know that the friend of Elisa's who almost got killed last night, and whom he was offering his condolences over, was the gargoyle that he'd attacked.

This time around, I noticed that Elisa was definitely very hostile towards Xanatos in her conversation with Owen (who was his usual delightful Owen-ish self). It makes me wonder how she must feel later when the gargoyles move back in with the guy (more about that when I get to Part Three). Note that Elisa at this point believes that the Hunters and Demona were working together - and she couldn't have been more wrong.

Elisa unwittingly contributes to the troubles in "Hunter's Moon", in a sense, when she only gets up to the clock tower after the gargoyles have awakened and gone off in pursuit of the Hunters; I can't help but think that if she'd caught them before they'd left, she would most likely have tried arguing with them to let the Hunters be treated as just another bunch of criminals to be turned over to the police for human justice rather than to be hunted down and killed. (Not that Elisa would have felt too keen on going easy on the Hunters at this point, I suspect. And at this stage, it would have been difficult to press charges upon the Hunters, since their only targets at this point were the gargoyles, who don't legally exist.)

We get our final look at Sevarius (if you don't count the Goliath Chronicles), who is his usual overdramatic self, calling his laboratory "my chamber of horrors" in a tip of the hat to Madame Tussaud. And we get our first strong hint of what Demona's up to in the description of his carrier virus.

We get another great scene between Elisa and Jason (complete with Goliath looking on in silence) at her apartment, complete with a little cameo from Cagney. (I wondered if Obie would pay any attention to Cagney meowing, but she didn't, so far as I can tell.) A great moment.

Another small touch that is wonderfully done, I believe, is the handling of Brooklyn and Lexington throughout the airship sequence. You can tell from the expressions on their faces how disturbed they are about Goliath's increasing drive for vengeance. (Best of all, in my opinion, is the troubled and saddened looks that they give each other as Goliath rejoins the rest of the clan at the clock tower afterwards.) Though Brooklyn still doesn't have any problems in going after Demona the moment that she shows up.

Lexington uses Demona's armband to short out the electricity for the bars of their cell so as to avoid setting off an alarm. But when Goliath proceeds to bend the bars, the alarm goes off anyway - they might as well have simply ripped the wires out.

Demona states that the Hunters wiped out the last gargoyle clan in Scotland. Of course, we now know that she was mistaken; they missed the one at Loch Ness.

We see Jon's support of the gargoyles as he argues with his siblings, but unfortunately doesn't sway them. And he still gives in and helps them with their attack on the clock tower - a sign of what is to come.

So we reach the big cliffhanger. Jason calls off his watch on the clock tower to grab Elisa and rescue her when she unexpectedly arrives. Lexington spots the transmitter on Goliath's shoulder. Robyn launches her attack on the clock tower, which we see disappear in a thick explosion....

A Scottish-accented voice utters the words "To be Concluded".

I wonder how many first-time viewers thought that this really was the end of the gargoyles (except, of course, that if it was, what would be in the final episode?). Alas, I can't recall my own response now. Pity.

TGC DVD> i don't think i'd buy it. its not worth the money for me, and if Disney has not got the message that Gargoyles is profitable after selling Seasons 1 and 2, sales of Season 3 are not going to tell them "hey, maybe we should try to profit on this thing" they are not entirely stupid, i think they realize that the vast majority of the quality of the series lies in Seasons 1 and 2. if they put Season 3 out they certaintly will not expect it to have the sales 1 and 2 did.

I'll admit, I downloaded the commercial twice. The revised audio is much better: definately makes to piece more professional.

TGC> My personal take is unless there's some compelling reason to buy it such as the voice track of a lost episode or behind the scenes footage of the making of the series, or something of that nature, I most likely won't. I realize "The Journey" is Greg's baby, but for me that's not enough. Perhaps it's psychological association. "The Journey is where the format changed: new animation style, and the opening narrative was added which gave me the feeling that Gargoyles was turning into the after school special type cartoon.

I watched the mirror last night. I thought I read in Ask Greg that gargoyles can't hover, yet, Goliath appears to hover just before he's struck by the energy and turned human. Did I miss something? Did Greg amend his original thoughts later? I can't find such in ask Greg.

I would buy the third season on DVD just based on my obsessive -compulsive need to have a complete collection.

The vice-presidential debate is being held at one of the local universities tonight, and I think Dick Cheney must be staying at the hotel across the street from where I work because I've NEVER seen the parking garage under it totally empty like it was when I cut through to get lunch at the food court today. I think the trick today will be getting out of downtown after work before the Secret Service starts closing off streets.

It's like a double-edged sword with that question. Do you buy it, regardless of whether it is good or not, just because you love the franchise and want to show your support and how much you love it?
I'd prefer to just buy what is good and what I love...not something that is bad and has the name of something I love.

I adore the Batman franchise, but there's no way I'm buying every silly little repainted action figure.

I adore the Star Wars franchise, but there's no way I'd buy the Ewok and Droids movie, or the Christmas special. *shudder*
The last thing I would personally want to do is support the mistakes or black marks of an awesome franchise. But everyone is different.

Even though you hate it, would you not buy TGC just because it's GARGOYLES? I would. I HATE the ep with Tauros and the changling (It's soooo Aladdin-esq (On DVD today!)). But I would still buy the set because I love the franchise.

And, it's a way to boost Disney sales which in turn are a plus for the franchise.

That is all I will say.

Demonskrye> Greg has a copy of the Team Atlantis voicetrack, which he plays at the Opening Ceremony of the Gathering. It really is just the voicetrack though - no sound effects or anything.
To see it animated would be wonderful.

The voice track and animatic exists for an episode of Bad Guys too. I think that would make an excellent special feature for the second season DVDs.

Siren> Personally, I'd like to think TGC never happened either, but if the first two seasons sell well (assuming it get's throught the second season), Disney is going to milk it for ever dime it's worth. Assuming the Disney Marketers actually bother to watch TGC, and see the poor quality of the animation, they may ask someone (preferably Greg) to clean it up so it is more marketable. That was what I was saying. Or they'll just scrap any plans for a TGC release due to the poor quality (most likely scneario).

I think it would be rather amusing if a new season were produced (under Greg), and the events of TGC turned out to be Goliath's dream, and at the season premiere, he breaks out of stone sleep and mentions vague descriptions of TGC episodes, then it is quickly forgotten.

I doubt Team Atlantis has a chance of returning. Unless by some chance the fandom gets as big and active as we do here. We roared and Disney listened. Now we have season 1 coming to DVD.
I think seeing some of the storyboards and any other work for the Demona/Atlantis episode on the DVD would be nice, but I somehow doubt it. Disney certainly has put up dropped concepts for movies. Aladdin DVD is full of them. But Aladdin made it to theaters and went onto be big. I don't see Disney putting too much energy into something that never even made it to print. I would like to see it certainly, but I am thinking realistically here and doubt it.

I'd also like to pretend TGC never happened. Don't get me wrong, some of the episodes weren't bad. But they were by no means Greg's standards and it shows. As does the animation at times.

I wouldn't mind seeing TGC on DVD one day, but I rather just see season 1 and 2 make it and then see what Disney says on future plans for the show/movie/etc.

I also think, if Disney decides not to do the tv series again or a movie, what they ought to do is at least allow Greg to write novels. If he is up for that anyways. Something for the fans. They left us at the cliffhangers to end all cliffhangers with Hunter's Moon. Not to mention all the other story lines in the show that we haven't seen yet.

Demonskrye> I remember reading somewhere that the voice cast for the "Team Atlantis"/Demona episode had already recorded for the episode, but the series was scrapped before it could go to animation. I thought I also recall reading that it is played at Gatherings (at least once in past). If this meant a radio play (meaning actresses like Marina Sirtis or Cree Summer did not lend their talents to this supposed recording), then I am very sorry for my mistake.

Happy birthday, Patrick, and happy belated birthday to Greg, who I missed last week :)

I have a quick question/plea for help. I've been working on the DVD site (www.gargoylesDVD.com) and someone a few weeks ago (I can't remember who, I'm sorry!) suggested I have a history of the DVD/Gathering to explain to new fans what a struggle it has been to bring the show to DVD and how dedicated the fans have been throughout. The problem is, I only just made it to the last Gathering, and I haven't been active in this fandom for a long while, so I don't know a lot of the details. Would someone feel like writing the history page, or providing me with some details? I'd like the page to be as complete and informative as possible, but I don't know that I'm the best person for that job <g>. Please email me if you're interested, or post here, or whatever's convenient ;)

Gantros> A few points:

1. I didn't recall that the voice track was already recorded for the Team Atlantis episode. At the very least, that would make the possibility of a radio play version a little greater. The time and cost of actual amimation still seems a bit prohibitive to me.

2. I keep going back and forth about how sales of a potential TGC release to DVD would affect the chances of the show's return. Positive end, low sales show Disney that this is where the series took a wrong turn and there's still intrest in the dhow as it was before TGC. On the negative, Disney could say "I guess the series kind of ran its course and people just weren't interested in the end". I guess my best selfish reason for not wanting TGC to come out is that I don't want to feel pressured into buying the DVD which I may well not want just to keep the possibility of the show returning alive. Wouldn't want anyone else in the fandom to be in that position either.

3. I think Gargoyles has a chance of returning in some form or other. But if Team Atlantis ever gets revived, I will purchase a hat of your choice and eat it in a white sauce with a side salad. Disney considers the original movie a flop. I think the series was part of some very poor planning that was common at Disney at that time. There was enough of an assumption that the film would be a success to get a spinoff TV series going. Movie did poorly and the series was scrapped, though quite a bit later than it should have been. With no fandom backing it up, I sincerely doubt Disney is looking to bring back that particular property.

4. I'm really doubting that Disney would be interested in "fixing up" the TGC episodes. And though I don't speak for Greg, I don't get the impression that he'd want to. Greg seems to want to ignore TGC entirely. Some of the epsiodes resembles ideas he wanted to do, but they'd still need major changes. It's really amount to a new season 3. And even if the TGC episodes could be altered to fit with Greg's ideas, I don't know if I'd support that. I'm not a big fan of works being tinkered with after their release to the public, even if the reasons are relatively good ones.

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm shooting down your ideas. I'm not trying to and I would love a fully animated Team Atlantis episode on one of the DVDs. I'm just saying what I think is likely to happen.

Does anyone know if there were storyboards for the episode?

I have to tell you, D has been so great in promoting the DVD. We have a thread in our Disney forum devoted just to the DVD and she's always posting updates and helping spread the word and encouraging anyone and everyone to post a review. We've had a few people not understand how to post reviews, or the credit card question, and she's always there to give them a hand! She's been a great supporter for Gargoyles and the DVD over at the TZ forums.
We both have "buy the DVD" styled messages in our member signatures over there, and I'm always updating the count on the reviews in mine to keep people aware of how their support really shows.

Siren: Great job on the Gargoyles commercial! Vashkoda already covered everything I was going to say, so, here's one more suggestion: when the Gargoyles logo appears right at the end, you show the release date, right? But it's in number format. It would be easier to read if it were spelled out, I think. And easier on the eyes. ;)

And thanks for reminding us of why we fell in love with the show in the first place. Some scenes truly gave me the chills at how great the were. Especially the "I lived for my clan!" line. The footage that goes with that line is just so POWERFUL. I loved it. I can't get over how great it is. Keep up the great work! :D

Todd Jensen: You don't need a credit card. When it asks you for a credit card number, you simply look for an option along the lines of "create identity" or "create name" or "create alias." Something like that; I can't remember. But it's there. You definitely don't need a credit card.

Victoria: Oh, hi! We met at ToonZone! Barb Gordon, right? :D

Everyone: You don't need a credit card. The plan is to review the first season first, and then review the DVD itself when it comes out, such as the special features. You don't need a credit card; signing up is free. Please take the time to support the show. If you're not good with words, it doesn't matter. Your review still counts. We're up to 60 reviews right now. Let's make it to 100! :D

Anyway, just watched your commercial, Siren. Excellent job! Refer to my last post for a possible suggestion - the Spongebob-Gargoyles one.

Oh and Shara, one more thing (and this goes for the rest of you too, any American Idol bashers): Thou shalt not take the second greatest show ever created's (second to Gargoyles, of course) in vain or insult the man with the black pants (Simon, not Xanatos. I've never realized an American Idol-Gargs connection that I could be unfolding now!)

Anyway, just out of curiosity, did Toon Disney air their edited version of "Deadly Force" last Tuesday? If not, Yipee! If so, boo on them!

I tried submiting a review to Amazon.com, but unfortunately, it turns out that you need a credit card for that, and I don't have one (except for a strictly J.C. Penney's credit card, which probably doesn't count); I've heard so many horror stories about credit card debt that I prefer to do without them. So I'm afraid that I won't be able to submit a review. Sorry about that.

Greg Weisman hinted that Ragnarok wiped out any gargoyles that were native to Norway; that's certainly one of the most interesting Gargoyles Universe revelations that he'd made for quite a while. I suspect that if Ragnarok did take place in the Gargoyles Universe, it must have been a strictly local phenomenon, confined to Norway (and obviously before recorded history - at least, recorded history of a reliable nature - began). Not to mention that Odin clearly survived being swallowed by the Fenris-wolf, if that event happened at the Gargoyles Universe Ragnarok, and somehow got out again (maybe when Vidar ripped the wolf in half).

We'll definitely have another one soon, because I helped out someone on a message board edit their's today. They really wanted to put up a review but their writing was rather....atrocious....to an insane degree (to a Lit Major at least) and they needed someone to make it a little more appropriate.

Ideal situation in my opinion would just be to put "The Journey" on the last season two DVD right after "Hunter's Moon" part 3. Let the last twelve episodes of TGC rot away in the vault.

Kill two birds with one stone, we have all 66 Greg episodes and we don't have to worry about TGC having bad sales.

Vash>Forgot to answer your question. The end with the computer generated castle, Goliath, and claw swipe is from the Heroes Awaken VHS for the video game. And I would KILL to have the claw swipe as a regular transition. And I would have rather had Keith David read my little "script" then have the text, but I couldn't get a hold of his agent ;)
Originally the line was "RULE THE NIGHT"...But I switched it with "OWN THE NIGHT". It just seemed right for the DVD. Own the night...Own the DVD...Cheesy...but commercials are suppost to all they can to get you to buy their product :)
I'm tweaking it now. You are right about somethings that I notice now. The transitions and Bronx scene. I already took out the very first transition, with the iris as the sun rose, I didn't like that after the fact that I did it. And I plan to do another commercial with more storyline. Once I am comfortable with this one, I'll move onto the next one.

Happy Birthday Patrick!

Gantros > I agree with you on the thing about Greg cleaning up TGC. But maybe those costs would be TOO great. Maybe Disney could hold some kind of poll or something to decide which ones to clean up.

Musical Gargs > One thing would be after the kiss and Elisa could be back home singing Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This.:) And then they could cut to Goliath singing "Elisa", which would be a rewrite of "Maria" from West Side Story. And then for the grand finale Goliath, Elisa, Broadway, and Angela could do "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" in a big Broadway-style finish.

By the way, Spongebob has a HUGE adult fanbase. Maybe we can get them with the Patrick-Broadway connection ("See the voice of Patrick in a REAL role!" or wear a Gargs T-Shirt if you see the movie) (No offense to Spongebob fans. I'm one of them too!)

And about splitting S2: They should split it at Avalon and then add in a Keith David sound-alike (or even the real thing) that says "Next Time on Gargoyles..." and then entice new fans to buy S2 V2.

And just a poll-
How many copies of Gargs s1 will you buy and from where?

I'll announce the complete findings next week.

Demonskrye> If Gargoyles sells well enough to justify putting out the second season (which I suspect will be in at least 2 volumes due to it's size), perhaps the last Gargoyles season before or with TGC (I don't think anyone who knows the show will buy that one except for getting "The Journey") could include a finished "Team Atlantis" episode for the following reasons:

1.) they already have the voice track of the episode, so other than standard royalty fees, Disney need not hire the actors to do it over again.

2.) For rabid fans (like me), it would provide incentive to purchase the TGC Volume (if it is bundled with that one). Otherwise, the average fan who does not like TGC would let that one fail, and therefore kill any chance of getting Gargoyles back for a new season (Here's hoping for that one).

3.) The cost of producing the "Team Atlantis" episode might be offset by the sales of the first two seasons, and the potential of reviving both the "Atlantis" and "Gargoyles" franchises.

And I'm still wondering how some will manage it. Will some fans buy like 100 DVDs and sell them later on??? How many DVDs will be sold the first month & around christmas (this will be the highest quote).

And what will happen, if the number of sold DVDs will be HUGHE??? EP 2 on DVD? New EPs? GREG GETTING A NEW/OLD JOB????

Speculations, speculations...

Wow, thanks Vashkoda for the tips and impressions. Some of the sound files were taken from Avalon, so they do cut off quickly. I am also still working on how to edit sound with Screenblast. Screenblast is more of a video editing program rather then a sound editing, so they give me a limited amount of stuff to work with. I also never have tweaked sound before now, because all my other videos were the original song. So this is new territory for me. It's nice to get back precise feedback. Siren> Nice commercial. Since you asked for feedback, here are a few initial impressions:
-very nice opening, especially the music blending
-between the words "darkness" and "world of fear", there almost seem to be two transitions going on, which is a bit jarring. After panning across the statues, freeze the frame before merging to Hakon's smashing
-You shouldn't cut off Demona's snarl so quickly. You can let it fade over the transition to the scene of Goliath
-You did a good job trying to blend the epsiode music with the background theme, but the transitions are too sharp. Again, fading out might make it less noticable.
-Nice choice of dialog ("I lived for my clan!") and good job matching it to the relevant scenes
-the scene of Bornx leaping through the air to latch onto the robot's tail is cool looking, but the scene drags on too long. You should maybe cut it after it's obvious the robot is caught
-Once Goliath starts crying out, the mood becomes more dramatic. The background music stays "adventure-themed" though, and the use of cheesy transition animations really doesn't fit with the seriousness of the story. I know you wanted to be creative with those animations (I think you probably went through the entire repertoire your editing software provided you), but some of them just aren't appropriate to this commercial. I guess you need to decide who your audience is: mature people who appreciate the show as a work of quality and good drama, or little kids who want something that looks fun. From the overlying text you use and the scenes you chose, it seems like you're catering to the former. It's too bad the "claw swipe" animation probably isn't available.
-Nice ending (are those images and animations from Toon Disney commercials?). Though again, Goliath's growl gets cut off too quickly

Overall, very good work. It's nice to be reminded how cool the show is. ^^

Gantros> I think "Avalon" as the last part of the first Season 2 volume could work. Decent cliffhanger without making people go crazy waiting for the next set. What is the last episode before Avalon and the World Tour?

A finished version of the "Team Atlantis" Demona ep would be great, but it might be cost prohibitive and I don't know if Disney wants to put that much effort into an episode of a show they opted not to do. Though not as cool, the scropt would be good. Or even better, a radio play styled reading with the original cast.

This also brings up something I'd been thinking about for a while. When we get a DVD or DVDs of Season 2 (talons crossed), do you think we should lobby to get "The Journey" added to the end? On the one hand, I think people have a right to see Goliath Chronicles if the want to and I don't want them to gain a sort of allure to people who've never seen them if they aren't released. On the other hand, they do apparently make children cry with their badness and it doesn't seem quite fair for us all to have to buy a whole DVD for one episode. Thoughts?

Gargoyles to Buffy Comparison> While Wesley and Owen are pretty close in personality, I think in some ways, Owen has more in common with Spike's Buffy robot.

...

...

Much as I'd love to just let that hang and watch people's reactions, I can't resist explaining my logic.

Think about it. Both are representations of a human being made by someone who isn't quite human. Both are somewhat exaggerated versions of real people (Buffy with the Buffy-bot, Preston Vogel with Owen). Both were created for...umm..."fun" by their creators.

Works for me anyway.

Battle Beast> The reason I chose "Avalon" as the last episodes in Volume 1 of a potential Season 2 DVD is because:

1.) It would be roughly half of the total Season 2 episodes at that point.

2.) Although "Avalon" does kick off the World Tour saga, it isn't really part of the World Tour, per se. Having it as part of a cliffhanger of sorts on a Volume 1 DVD, influencing the purchase of a second Volume DVD, would be a better marketing strategy from my perspective.

3.) No one thinks having the "Team Atlantis" Demona episode finished and put in a future Garg DVD as a special feature isn't a good idea?

Happy birthday Patrick!

Siren, back to your post (that's now in "last week's comments"), I was thinking of other songs the Gargoyles could sing (if they didn't sing original songs):

*Demona could sing "Beautiful Stranger" to Thailog
*Broadway and Angela could sing the Lion King version of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (maybe change the words a little though)
*The whole cast could sing as they're on patrol "Night Fever" (and the part about "sweet city woman," Goliath could sing, hehe)

And I've been having trouble thinking of Buffy/Gargoyles comparisons to Dawn and Bronx. Because the Summers don't have a dog, and the gargoyles don't have a little annoying sister. Or a magical thing that became a person. Hmmm... *will think about it through the day*

Happy B-day, Patrick!

Gantros> I think "Avalon" should start off thw World Tour, no? It's a logical spot to start the second set.

I for one would like to see the second season packaged up like G.I. Joe and Transformers... Season 2 Part 1, Season 2 Part 2, Etc.

That is all i will say.

"Nine!" as a German pessimist would say.

I woke up this morning and suddenly I was a year older than I was yesterday. Birthdays are funny that way. And then I looked at the DVD countdown... so let's all sing along with the Quarrymen now...

When I get older losing my hair
many years from now
will you still be sending me a valentine,
birthday greeting, bottle of wine
If I'd been out till quarter to three
would you lock the door
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm...

Sixty-four days left until the spell is broken and they live again! Gargoyles Season One comes to DVD on December 7, 2004!

What DPH said, plus 1 :)

I liked the Buffy/Gargoyles comparisons. Now all someone has to do is find a Bronx counterpart and we're set!

I claim the spot given by adding 2 squared to two divided by two.

I am 4th, and had an idea for future Garg DVD releases (here's hoping):

In all likely hood, if the second season is to be released on DVD, considering how large it was, it'll probably be in volumes (like Batman: TAS is). I suspect that it will be "Leader of the Pack"-"Avalon" for the first volume, and "Shadows of the Past"-"Hunter's Moon" for the second Volume. They may even get greedy and split Season 2 into 3 or 4 volumes. But my idea is that, provided that the it is cost worthy, that Greg gets to finish the Team Atlantis episode that has Demona in it, and put it in as a special feature.
