I'm usually just a lurker, but I had something to say.
Gantros>> I also think the lack of promotion by Disney is odd. I was at the Disney Store today at the Mall of America and there was absolutly NOTHING that even hinted that Gargoyles was coming out on DVD in TWO days. There wasn't even a release calendar. :( There wasn't any mention of Gargoyles in any of the Sunday ads either:(
Sorry if I make anyone really depressed or anything...

I just looked through the 'top sales rankings' for DVDs on Amazon.. there are 7 listed in the top 100 that will be released on Tuesday (the 7th).. hmm..

With my experience looking for 'low priority' releases on release dates... I'm going later in the evening to pick it up. Around 7ish; maybe earlier. This might be a good plan all around; however, it might just be this area (I mean.. Alabama's not really the highest point for a wide variety of selections, is it?) thus I will go later, and to the larger or the 2 best buys here... yeah.

:)

Yay! 130 reviews on Amazon! A nice, round, even number :) Whoo!

Matt: Sorry about your grandma. It can be hard to lose someone in your family. I've lost Nana, my paternal grandmother, and my maternal grandfather. I barely saw/knew Nana (she was on the other side of the country) but I was close to my grandpa. But in both cases, it was hard. But I got through it, after some time passed. I know you will too :)

You and your family are in my prayers!

Matt: sorry to hear about your grandmother :\

All: Just a heads up that I made a few changes to the AG site. Netscape 4 users are the only ones who should notice any real difference. IE users at 640x480 might notice something too, but besides that, no worries.

If you run into any problems, or notice anything new that's making life more difficult, let me know.

An interesting sighting of Preston/Owen on the anime series "Full Metal Alchemist". In the episode "The Man with the Mechanical Arm", Our heroes our on a train that is attacked by some bandit (I think). The guy in the radio room, named "Ears", is tying up the line chatting with someone. When the train is taken over, Ears has a serious expression, which transforms his face into an exact replica of Preston Vogel (Ears has black hair). His personality is not the same as either preston or Owen, so that's where the similarity ends.

The late movie on tv last night was 'Article 99'. The only reason I mention it? Keith David had the supporting role of 'Luther Jermoe', a paraplegic Vietnam veteran who get's caught up, or helped organise, a hostage situation at a VA hospital.
I didn't get to watch due to the fact I was working, but the bits I did catch of his performance were pretty good.

So I just joined this LJ community where they have a long list of random pairings (all cross-fandom) for people to write and I found one that struck me funny (and I'm attempting to write it).

Demona from Gargoyles and... Clem from Buffy (click on my name to see a pic of him).

If you haven't seen Buffy, Clem's a nice peaceful demon. He first appeared in Season 6 playing kitten poker (they play for kittens so they can eat them - how horrible!) and he helped out Buffy a few times - like when Willow went evil at the end of Season 6, Clem took care of Dawn, Buffy's little sister. And he was on the show twice in Season 7, and the last time we see him he's leaving Sunnydale.

Anywho. So Clem and Demona. An odd pairing. But I'm liking how my fic is going so far. When it's finished and posted, I'll provide a link.

But first I'll give you a couple of snippets (at this point the person talking is Clem - through the story I'm gonna switch POV between the two):

"Rough day?" I heard a voice say. I turned next to me and was surprised to see a nice-looking blue gargoyle staring back at me.

Gargoyles were funny creatures. They weren't demons, but they definitely weren't humans either. They had wings to glide with and during the day they became stone. And I thought werewolves were strange.

...

"...When [Willow's] girlfriend was murdered, though... it was bad. Really bad."

She turned her eyes away from me and stared at her drink. "Vengeance is never a good place to go. Trust me, I've been there."

...

My eyes widened. "Hey, I know who you are! Dominique Destine! Half gargoyle, half human! Right?"

She blushed, I think. Hard to tell when a gargoyle's blushing. "Word gets around, even to the Hellmouth. Although, your description isn't entirely correct. I was born a gargoyle and remained one for the better part of a millennium. A spell caused me to be human when the sun rises."

"Very cool!" I nodded.

...

Let me know what you think so far!

Avatars:

When I first found s8, I was originally going to use the Brooklyn avatar, but I spotted Battle Beast already using it. So, in an attempt to be "original", I chose the Griff avatar instead. It was no biggie since I'm rather fond of that episode anyways (my favorite of the bunch, second to the "Hunter's Moon" trilogy...mainly for the soundtrack when the germans attack).

Did you see the latest Q&A for today? Someone asked:

"I looked at the FAQ page & I don't think this was asked. I was wondering, I'm curious to this, do female gargoyles have periods? You know, a monthly visiter? I've always wondered. Thank you for your time."

LoL! It is an interesting question I suppose, I've never thought about it. But it's like the, uh... waste product issue. Who cares! LoL.

Greg's response:
It wouldn't be monthly, since they're not fertile that often.

Lucky female gargoyles. LoL.

Hundreds of questions about who Desdemona is are one of the last things that we need at "Ask Greg" right now.

It's bad enough that we still get the occasional question from somebody who has the wrong idea about "Ask Greg" and wants to know what the highest point of land in North America is.

Grargh.

Gorebash> Please pardon be if I've overlooked something obvious, but I couldn't track down your e-mail address, so I'm gonna ask you this here.

I'm currently writing an article for Jim Hill Media (click my name) about the release of the Season One DVD, the "Get Out the Sales" campaign, and so on. I'm including a bit about how the fandom and Greg have both been big factors in this DVD coming out and how both are pushing for big release day sales. I would like to include a mention of Station 8 and maybe even "Ask Greg" (possibly even with a link), but I'd like your OK before I do it.

As I see it, both good and bad could come of it. The good would be a lot of people checking out the site, remembering or learning how great the show is, buying DVDs, and joining the general fandom. The bad could be more, shall we say, "unwelcome" attention. Hundreds of new questions in "Ask Greg" about who Desdemona is, for one example.

So I'm hoping you'll give me your opinion. I'm also hoping to have this article up by Monday, so I'd need it fairly soon. I've included my e-mail if you'd rather contact me that way. If I don't hear from you, I'll leave Station 8 out of the article, just to be safe.

Less than a week till the DVD is released and still no TV ads to speak of on Disney stations (Disney Channel, Toon Disney, ABC, etc...). I would think that since they want to sell TV series (like all the other major networks), they'd want to advertise at least a little?

Speaking of Amazon, did anyone else notice that they finally got rid of that old outdated listing that said "Gargoyles" was not being released on DVD yet? Do a search for "Gargoyles" in DVD now and you just get two items. Probably a good thing so no one gets confused about whether the DVD is available or not.

Since somebody asked about the avatars a while ago too, I think I'm still the only semi-regular Comment Roomer using "Coldstone and Desdemona". I picked it in part because no one was using it much when I started posting here either. I also think it's an excpetionally good image, and rather sweet besides.

Yikes, that oversized Goliath figure on eBay sure is off in the face.

Too bad I'm poor at the moment. Definitely gonna order a DVD set off of Amazon and probably get a set the day of release from some store. Haven't decided whether the Amazon set will be donated to the library (where it's possible it'll reach more people and maybe inspire some DVD purchases to help us along to Season 2) or given as a gift to a friend. Hmm...

Gotta go with the "Wolf" avatar, give whatever little props I can to Clancy Brown (only a little over a month 'til Carnivale Season 2!). I guess there's no way to preview the icon/avatar images before posting, is there?

It's cool that there's such a large selection of images, but the one absence that stands out the most to me is Claw. I would've used Claw for sure, he's a favorite minor character. Especially for that bit where he just gives up on a fight out of fright and folds his wings over himself.

While we're on the topic of numbers, just a reminder that today is World AIDS Day. Click on the link for Medicins Sans Frontieres flash site on the sucesses and future challenges regarding AIDS treatment in Africa.

Just a few facts:

25.4 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV.

More than half (13.3 million) are women.

These people are unable to access or afford the drugs they need, and as a result, 2.3 million people died as a direct result of AIDS/HIV last year.

11.5 million children have been orphaned by age, and an entire generation of African young men and women has virtually disappeared, jeopardizing many already fragile economies for decades. The number of households being run by children, sometimes aged 6-7, simply because there are no adults to care for them, are growing.

We're all excited about the DVD on December 7th, but after that, why not set aside a little bit of money and donate to Medicins Sans Frontieres to help continue the fight against AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa? It doesn't have to be much - take ten dollars off the stocking stuffers you were going to buy, perhaps - but it can help make a world of difference.

Father of Cù Chuluin/ Cù Chulainn/ Cuchullin/Cock-a-doole-doo!
(OK, that last one was a joke)
Apparently in some myths the father of the Hound (whatever spelling you choose!) is Lugh, a sun god. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lugh
That is Wikipedia, so please take it with a grain of salt. Anyone can edit Wikipedia: You could be reading an article from a scholar with time on her hands, or an article from someone thinks he knows more than he does. Like the Internet in general, no?

Demonskrye's "Dare to be Different" Countdown says...

....8 days until I leave for Orlando and Disney World.

Yup. Tuesday, I run out to get my copy and order copies for friends and family on Amazon. Wednsday i go on vacation and see if the Disney World shops are carrying the DVD. I'll be sure to report when I get back.

Todd> I'm not entirely sure if the Loch Ness Monster knows or cares much about St. Andrew either, but I could be wrong.

Today, November 30, is St. Andrew's Day, relevant to "Gargoyles" because St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. (Not that that would mean all that much to Goliath and his clan, I suspect, since saints would appear a human concern to them rather than anything to do with gargoyle religion. Not to mention that I don't even know if St. Andrew was patron saint of Scotland by 994 or whether he was appointed to that position later on.) But, in light of how many characters in "Gargoyles" are Scottish (Goliath and his clan, Princess Katharine, the Magus, the Archmage, Tom, Macbeth, the Hunters from Gillecomgain all the way down to the Canmores - who spoke with Scottish accents, not to mention the Loch Ness Monster), I'd say that it's definitely relevant.

SS>Never heard of it, but thanks for the info. Another Small One look-a-like was "Nester The Long Eared Donkey". Not sure which came first. Small One was written in the 50s by Charles Tazewell, so I think Nester came later. It always looked like a rip off to me. But was was cute regardless. But I still like Small One better :P And the boy was a lot less annoying then that angel.

Also in other news...I am 98% done with the Demona My Little Pony...yes in case you hadn't heard...I made one. I just need to add her hair and symbol. I am very proud of her. I do plan to sell her though through Ebay and when it's up, I'll post the link here :)

(Sorry if this is off topic)
Siren- I saw a (dubbed) movie in spanish class years ago, and when I saw your Small One site, I thought it was the same movie. A week ago I found a DVD called "The Little Christmas Burro" which I got because it was only $1 and I wanted to see if it was the same one. I looked it up on imdb, and found this out that it's actual title is The Little Brown Burro (1978).
The plot is the same, but the animation is much poorer. There's no little boy, but there's a talking mouse named Omar, and some Chinese artwork is shown for no apparent reason. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0304337
Have you seen or heard of this?

Now that I'm back in Montevallo, my location changed :)

Vertigo1>> There's another picture down the page (I think it's the last on the page) of Xanatos and the rest of the clan... is that the scene you're thinking of? (It's been a gooooood while since I saw an ep... heh...)

Others>> While reading the UD review, I did notice the original air dates for the show... interesting that Disney showed "Awakening" in one full week, as opposed to one episode a week. Also interesting that, depending on the sales of this DVD depends on future seasonal releases of other animated series. I might have to stalk Best Buy to get it.... at least I can choose which BB to stalk.... :) I'll probably go to the larger one; more likely to get it in :D

(The reason why I'm going to BB is because I don't have a credit card or other means to buy from Amazon. :D)

:D

DPH - I don't know when Greg will disable the submit button; it all depends on how much longer he'll be going with his rambles (which was why he opened the queue again).

As for clearing your questions - at Greg's request, I haven't been clearing any questions for a while. The reason is that Gorebash was working on a program that would allow me to personally answer (with quotes from the archives) the questions that Greg has been asked before, so that they won't be holding up the queue, and once he gets it finished (which hasn't happened yet, unfortunately), all of the cleared questions will be "reset".

(And I do think that your latest question, about Demona and Nokkar, is dangerously close to an idea....)

Thanks for the link to the review, Kara Kulak. Nice to see another fan here in the not-so-frozen North (although I have introduced several people to the show, and they are all planning on buying the DVD next week).

I watched all 5 parts of "Awakening" this weekend and noticed something that review mentioned: that there are times when the Trio seems to be around for comic relief.

I'll be glad when the DVD comes out; my tape has a few places where there is a crawl (and a map that covers most of the left side of the screen) for severe weather warnings (common in the summer in Minnesota; parts of my copies of "City of Stone" and "Avalon" have that same problem). I hope season 2 makes it to DVD as well.

What if Broadway got a little too much tryptophan?

And what can a gargoyle get jet lag? How funny would it be...

Thoughts to ponder.

And when the DVD comes out, there will be 18 days 'til XMas. How about a mass viewing of all 13 eps, and then Awakening w/ commentary (one per day, in order)? Then, we can pass the time until Christmas with our DVD(s).

Just more thoughts...

The only problem I had with the review is the picture they chose to show the rest of the clan. The pose it has for Brooklyn makes him look....odd. A much better shot would have been when they were in the main hall when Xanatos brought them "up-to-date". Still, the review was very nice and more than fair. It just makes me more excited about having my own copy of the DVD set. :)

Heh, that's unfortunate. Now I'm gonna be thinking "Gollum" when I see Lexington in the show.

The Ultimate Disney review was nice and thorough. And very fair, I thought. I have a feeling there'll be even more regard (ravings even!) for the show's plots and character development when Season 2 is seen by these reviewers. Oh yeah, "City of Stone" alone should win these DVDs awards.

Does anyone keep a record of which character/artifact images are being used by regular posters here? Since I'll be posting more regularly once I have my DVDs and am re-watching most of these episodes for the first time in ten years, I thought I might try on an avatar, but I wanna pick one that no one else is using.

Having just finished reading the Ultimate Disney preview, I can't help but think it amusing that Lexington's appearance is still being compared to that of Gollum - something that's been going on even before the movie version of "The Lord of the Rings" came out. At least they didn't have the Evil Lex of "Future Tense" saying "My precious...."
