Todd: Cosplay basically means costume play. It's a Japanese subculture where people dress up as characters from manga, anime, and video games (and sometimes TV/movies, american cartoon shows, etc.) It's nothing new. People have been doing it for years but there wasn't a word to associate the act/community until recently.

I suppose if you count "being kidnapped" as "doing more," then yeah, April in the old TMNT did a LOT more than her successor. ;)

I still have no strong leanings either way between the old April and the new April as far as the character design goes. But the new show's designs for Casey Jones and Baxter Stockman are definitely superior to the old ones.

On a more "Gargoyles" related note... am I the only one who can see Fox and Elisa cosplaying quite easily as Kim Possible and her rival Shego?

I only catch it once in awhile on Cartoon Network when there is nothing else on, but I noticed that the new April must have gotten training from Splinter at some point, because she is now fighting alongside the turtles with martial arts skills, doing Splinter Cell-type infiltration work in the episode I saw.

I was really psyched about the new Turtles series, but I found the first four or five episodes so slow and involving that I was really turned off. The old series was cheesy but at least things happened each episode. It may have improved since then, of course.

Ninja turtles: I liked the orginal show better . I think mostly because as a kid I was forced to be the news lady when we played ninja turtles outside. The old show gave april more additude and she did more. The new episodes it's like they just have her there but she doe'snt do anything. That and I think the old show had more personality.

J.J. > Don't worry about all "Gargoyles" fans liking the new TMNT. I'm not in love with it. I watched that episode because people were talking about it. If you ask me, it borrowed a bit too much from "Terminator" and "X-men" and all that had come before it.

I also find it interesting that apparently Shredder made the same mistake that Xanatos did in "The Gathering." For all his defenses around his skyscraper fortress, he forgot to make sure someone couldn't just tunnel in through the basement like Bugs Bunny. :P

Days of Future Past> All of these "Dark Futures" be it from TMNT, Gargoyles, X-Men, or wherever, the earliest example of such "What If" stories that I know of is "It's A Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stewart. The underlying theme is the same regardless of the series. The audience sees a world where the protaginist had no influence on the events he would otherwise have had. For Jimmy it was being born, for Goliath being on the World Tour supposedly for 40 years, for the X-Men:TAS it was as a result of Senator Kelly being assasinated by Rogue masquerading as Gambit, for TMNT(2004) it was as a result of Don getting transported by the Scepter of Time. It's one of those introspective moments where the protaganist finds out what a difference he has made to the world around him, whether he knew it or not.

The Show We are Not Supposed to Discuss>> The thing about TMNT violence that strikes me is that the fighting scenes are very stylized, making use of cinema-esque aspect ratios ("letterboxing") and even stylized backgrounds for emphasis. You can often see the background dissolve into a streaked blur not because anyone is moving rapidly, but rather in order to highlight an exciting technique on the part of the fighters.

Also, there is a good amount of swordplay, but no blood. It's just... weird.

Donatello's time-travel ep >> I just couldn't get over how much it reminded me of "Future Tense", (and presumably of the X-Men's "Days of Future Past"(sp?), et cetera, et cetera, et cetera), and to the basic Terminator story. Didn't particularly like the "Kill the Shredder, and everything's hunky-dory" idea.

I admit that I have a hard time getting into the minds of the characters, especially into the Shredder, causing most (certainly not all!) stories to feel rather cold to me. Since I know many Gargoyles fans like this version of TMNT, and vice versa (why else would I post this here?), I must wonder: Is something wrong with me? Will I dislike any future Gargoyles series/novels/comics?

Todd> I was playing a little Kingdom when I noticed something that supports my theory that SquareEnix (then Squaresoft) used at least one Disney series influence in the game, the Gummi ship. This was the method used to travel between the worlds in Kingdom Hearts using a ship pieced together from simple blocks. I never saw Gummi Bears, but I think they are at least vaguely related.

Ninja Turtles> The allowed level of violence on the new Ninja Turtles show does raise some interesting points. There still seems to be some leeway with what you can do on a TV show ostensibly aimed at children and still have it make air. I guess the line here lay at actually showing any fatal blows being struck. The screen would cut to black with two white "slash" effects, then we'd see the aftermath of what happened. It sounds kind of lame when you see it in writing, but the cut is very fast, so it doesn't really feel like a big "censored" sign in the middle of the cartoon. And as for the aftermath, you do actually get to see the dead bodies of the three turtles who are killed. No blood, of course, but it's still pretty rough stuff for a Saturday morning cartoon.

I think this bodes well for a potential "Gargoyles" return. Since the violence on "Gargoyles" was never gratuitous (and I don't think it is on TMNT either), the writers could probably get away with the same degree of violence that the show had in its first two seasons without causing too much of a stir.

What impressed me about the nightmare future episode of "Turtles", among other things, was the fact that they didn't go with the easy ending. In most stories like this, we see the time-lost hero return to his own time or wake up to assure the audience that everything's OK, back to normal. (Even "Future Tense", though it's still a cool take on the bad future theme, gets us back to normal at the end and brings us back to Manhattan in the next episode.) While we see Donatello "blinking out" towards the end, we never actually get to see him return home (and since the next episode hasn't aired yet, I'm not sure if he does right away). Not only that, but we actually end with a shot of the future version April thanking the just departed Donatello for helping to free the world as she knows it. This adds a kind of legitimacy to this particular future that a lot of other shows don't give to their possible futures.

This is nothing against "Gargoyles" of course, since the "Future Tense" future is just a trick by Puck and doesn't need to seem more real. I just thought the take on the theme in TMNT was an interesting alternative.

IRC Goliath >> Yup, I'm pretty excited about "Guardians of Luna" (man, I wish we could use bold and/or italics so I could emphasize titles without using quotation marks. The low tech nature of this board is at once charming AND frustrating). I think Michael Reaves has a winner on his hands. I'm not exactly in love with the preview images of the art I've seen, if the series does end up looking like that...but who knows, once I see it in action I might change my mind. And if the writing's there, I might be able to forgive a style of art that isn't to my liking.

Speaking of former Gargoyles talent, does anyone have a list compiled anywhere (on a website or another board) about what everyone's doing these days? The actors, the writers, all the various kinds of artists...?

Changing gears for a moment... has anybody brought up Guardians of Luna? Michael Reaves is writing and directing a new animated series that features werewolf protagonists. It sounds like he's trying to go with more intelligent plots and character growth. Click on my name for an interview about the show. I thought it was pretty cool that they mentioned Batman: TAS, Gargoyles, and Naruto for references.

Gargoyles and Kingdom Hearts> Something else to keep in mind is that the majority of the Disney cameos in Kingdom Hearts were from Disney's theatrical line up. It's highly unlikely that we'll see anything from Gargoyles in there, even though it would fit the theme perfectly.
For anybody who has PLAYED Kingdom Hearts, I give you this "I can't fly! I can only swim through the air with poor camera control. There is not an analog stick strong enough to lift us back up."

"Gargoyles" and Kingdom Hearts> With all due respect, I think the idea that Eisner or anyone somehow hid "Gargoyles" from Squarenix during the develpment of "Kingdom Hearts" is a little far fetched. A much more likely reason that the clan doesn't make an appearence in the game is that there aren't ANY Disney characters who originated in TV shows in the game. If the cast of "TaleSpin" or "Darkwing Duck" showed up, then this might be a valid gripe. But since Squarenix stuck with movie characters and Mickey & the gang for the first two games now, there's no reason to suspect any sinister motive behind the exclusion of "Gargoyles".

Also, keep in mind that the first game was originally made for a Japanese audience and didn't get a stateside release for quite some time. This is part of the reason why there's a "Nightmare Before Christmas" level; the movie was HUGE in Japan and merchandise based on it continues to be made. Since we don't really know much about how "Gargoyles" fared in Japan (assuming it even got much of a release there), it's fair to assume that Squarenix may not have considered a "Gargoyles" level when developing the game.

As to the rumors of a possible "Gargoyles" level in an upcoming "Kingdom Hearts", I'm skeptical, but it would be awesome if they turned out to be true. I'd love to see gargoyle-ized versions of Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Disney might even be more open to the idea now that the season one DVD is out, meaning that they have a related item to promote. But until we get some hard evidence that this is happening, or even that the game might branch out and start including Disney TV characters, I'm not gonna be holding my breath.

An odd little thought that just occurred to me. In the flashback sequence at the start of "Hunter's Moon Part Two", Demona's being chased around Renaissance Florence by a Hunter in a flying machine that looks strongly like the sort of thing that Leonardo da Vinci would have designed. Between its style and the time period, it's quite possible that da Vinci *did* build it.

If Leonardo was responsible for the flying machine, it would be interesting to know where he stood on the whole gargoyle issue. Was he as thoroughly anti-gargoyle as the Hunters and glad to help them out? (Not something that we'd want to believe, but then again, nobody's perfect.) Did the Renaissance Hunter persuade Leonardo that the purpose of the hunt was to stop a malevolent female gargoyle from wiping out the human race and leave out the fact that the real purpose was to satisfy a 500-year-old feud? Or did he just hire Leonardo to do the work without telling him what the purpose was? Pity that we'll probably never know.

GANTROS - Based on what Greg Weisman has said in the past, I don't think that Eisner's as much to blame for the demise of "Gargoyles" as you believe. First, Eisner did support the show when Greg came up with it. The "too-many-episodes" ordered for Season Two was more the result of overconfidence in it than a deliberate attempt at killing it. (In particular, I think that the Disney execs failed to realize that if they put it up against "Power Rangers", "Power Rangers" would kill it.)

The sub-standard performance of the Goliath Chronicles was due to the new team being not as familiar with "Gargoyles" as the old team was. It was mainly low ratings that ensured that the Goliath Chronicles would be the final season of "Gargoyles", not a deliberate effort by the execs to kill off the series. And I think that the unrealistically happy ending in "Angels in the Night" was based more on the fact that, "If this is going to be the last episode, we need everything to have a happy resolution so that the audience won't worry about the gargs". (At least it was better than how the new team originally wanted the Goliath Chronicles to end, with the clan just giving up and running away from New York.)

Come to think of it, is the turn-around of the New Yorkers after the gargoyles rescue the train from the Quarrymen any worse than the turn-around of Princess Katharine and the Magus after the gargoyles rescued them from the Vikings in "Awakening Part Two"? (There, of course, the turn-around is muted by the fact that it's a pyrrhic victory for the gargoyles; the survivors have been turned to stone.)

Also, it is my opinion that Eisner or those working under him, did not like the Gargoyles series and sought to try and "remove" it despite its appeal. After the first season merited a second, unreasonable amounts of pressure were put on Greg and his team to produce 42 episodes for a second season, after Greg agreed to a smaller number. Greg pulled this off and had another successful season. In the end, Eisner or those under him decided to reorganize the show for kids, cutting Greg from the story process save for the first episode, and cutting the animation budget significantly. Thus resulted a typical Eisner-led Disney product, substandard writing with substandard animation. On top of that, The new team tried to kill the series entirely by tacking on a "happy ending" that completely threw off the pace of the series up to that point, namely that by saving a train full of people from the now "evil and far-reaching" Quarrymen, the people suddenly accept the gargoyles, the end. This ending was completely opposite to the realism Greg applied to the series when it was under his control.

Mascubanana> His name is spelled Iger, although Igor describes his position very well in relation to (Dr. Franken)Eisner.

What exactly is going on is this: Eisner is stepping down as CEO in September and has said he would leave the board after the next shareholders meeting (Feb/Mar 06). Iger is already taking over some of the CEO duties and will officially become CEO in October.

As to why everyone hates Eisner (and will likely transfer that dislike to Iger): The Walt Disney Company has a rich legacy and many people (myself included) feel that Eisner has failed to maintain that legacy. Businesses exist to make money, but Walt Disney made money by creating quality product. Eisner has tried to make money by creating quantities of mediocre product.
For example, in thirty years of film production, Walt averaged an animated movie every other year. In Eisner's twenty years as CEO the average is 3 per year (including Direct-to-Video movies). More quantity, less quality. The company is making money, but a "Disney movie" is no longer the special event it once was.

I can give a lot of other examples, but this is far enough off-topic already.

Since everyone was complaining about nothing to discuss, how about we discuss the possibility that SquareEnix may deveop a third Kingdom Hearts game for their next gen console, that may include Gargoyles/Manhattan as one of it's worlds? I think the Gargoyles are perfect for a game like that and am surprised that they haven't considered it as a possibility. My opinion is that when SquareEnix went through the Disney library for material, Eisner hid the Gargoyles related stuff.

Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The new TMNT cartoon has been a bit groundbreaking (for this decade) in its allowance of violence since the first season. I mean we have Shredder very obviously being beheaded on screen, albeit in shadow, by Splinter (I think Splinter? Or was it Leonardo?) in the first season finale...nevermind that we later find out he's an alien wearing a robot body, it was still a bit surprising at the time to see it at 10:30am on a Saturday. I lost track of TMNT right after they got back from the space arc in the second season. I caught that one random episode in the Shredder's history arc, then that was it. Rarely awake at 10:30am or 11am or whenever it's airing nowadays. Hoping to catch up on DVD some day, it seems to be about as good as North American action-adventure cartoons get these days. Glad it's doing so well that it's in its third season and a fourth has been commissioned, it deserves it. Otherwise it doesn't look like there's anything else worthwhile. Haven't check out the new Batman series, but from what I hear it doesn't live up to the `90s animated series. Oh yeah, speaking of The Batman, the Michael Reaves connection to Gargoyles reminds me that he's going to have a series airing in 2006 called "Guardians of Luna", about werewolves and possibly other were-creatures. Batman: The Animated Series and Gargoyles--yup, definitely going to be checking out anything from Michael Reaves. Maybe he'll invite Greg in to do an episode or two, that could be cool.
