Irina> Okay... first off. Goliath never had any problem accepting Angela as his daughter. He viewed her as his daughter from moment one. He also viewed Gabriel as his son from moment one. He viewed all the eggs as his children.

Goliath's tension with Angela stemmed from a variety of issues. First and foremost, he was concerned about her questions about biological parentage because he was afraid of what would happen if she found out about who her mother was. For that matter, if Demona found out about Angela.

He also didn't think it would be right to give Angela special treatment over any of the other eggs. But, as Diane Maza pointed out, all children want special treatment at times, it's natural. And Angela was the only hatchling traveling with Goliath anyhow.

So, as of today, Goliath views Angela and all her rookery siblings as his children. He didn't change his way of thinking. Angela is his daughter. Gabriel is his son.

And, as for Angela. She has several living parents. Katharine and Tom. Goliath and Demona. Coldstone and Coldfire. May the Magus and the rest of her parents massacred by Hakon rest in peace.

Now, to answer your question about Thailog. He knew that Thailog was grown from him, and I think he felt a little guilt over his initial reaction to the clone.

WOW, so much negative energy is going around! dont argue guys!
I was watching a Gargoyles episode "Double Jeopardy". andI noticed that Goliath was quick to accept Thailog as his so called "son." But it took him time to do that for Angela as his daughter...Wonder why that is?

(lol thanx for the "friendly tip"! its called being lazy to press the "shift" button. ;)

I don't see the words "clearing up" on that comment. Just because someone gives you a critical comment, doesn't mean they're insulting you.

Last time I checked clearing something up wasn't taking something personally. He was making comments that were weird responses and I got annoyed by them. Victorious- Let's get this straight. I made a comment about Static and you respond with Static doesn't suck even though I never said he did. He's one of my favorite heroes. Is it me or did DC kill off Batman the same time Marvel killed off Captain America? Was DC like Marvel killed an icon so we'll do it too?
spideyforever

I have a whole box full of VHS, too, compromised of three Gargoyles runs, so to complete. I hope to get the time soon to transfer them to DVD. Even those I have on the offical DVDs, since my are the German version and I did like the dub.

STARLIONESS - No, I had to abandon that old habit when I switched over from VCR to DVD player, and then they never came out with the second half of Season Two on DVD. (I still have my old "Gargoyles" tapes, but after experiencing DVDs, going back to the VCR seems like a regression.

Pucca, Monster Buster Club, and the Monkey Force reruns are all SUPER CRAP and need to go. Yin Yang Yo is okay for a kids show so that can stay. They need to get the rights for Batman Beyond, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, and maybe even Justice League and need to show more of Batman The Animated Series and of course old school Power Rangers.

Gargoyles will be incoporated on the schedule sometime this month. It's new time will be 2:30 AM.
Antiyonder

Sorry about the double pot but Pinky and the Brain is on XD but what about Tiny Toons and Animaniacs?
spideyforever

Disney XD is pretty feakin suite. Good thing they have Static Shock. The two things that annoy me about were the Marvel ripoffs they did Hulk (twice) and there was a Doc Ock ripoff too and DC didn't attempt to make him part of their universe. He is mostly famous for the show. On another note, Gargoyles is supposed to be on it but doesn't anyone know what time? Also, are they gonna put Batman Beyond on XD.
spideyforever

Todd: Having read some Catullus a while back, I'd be most interested if Cupid somehow wound up in the 'Trickster' type of Oberon's Children. Most people haven't heard tales of Cupid (or Eros, its all Greek to me) wielding arrows of two different metals: The first, gold, which will make the person struck become infatuated with the first person (or thing) they see, and and second, lead, to make the people run away in disgust at whoever catches their eye first.

Sometimes Cupid would strike one person with gold, and another with lead, just to see the first chase the second madly, as the second flees in utter terror and disgust. Oh, the mayhem :P

Phoenician
"The Suspense is Terrible . . . I Hope it Lasts" -- Willy Wonka

I've sometimes thought that Demona must really hate Valentine's Day; it would remind her of how both her relationships (with Goliath and Thailog) went sour. Of course, in Goliath's case, it was her fault (though you'd never get her to admit that); Thailog bears more of the blame in his case (though I suspect that even there, Demona helped; Thailog obviously wouldn't be keen on her genocidal schemes, not from soft-heartedness - he doesn't have any - but because if all the humans are dead, the money he stole from Xanatos and built up with further schemes would be worthless).

I can just imagine Demona feeling ready to shoot Cupid down with her laser cannon (or maybe something with iron ammunition, since he'd almost certainly be one of Oberon's Children) if he showed himself anywhere near her house.

woofwoofbarkmeow - They used cels for the animation--I've got one up on my wall right now. Cels from Gargoyles have been on sale for years, so recapturing them is impossible at this point.

The reason animated movies have been able to go to Blu-ray is because the cels were originally captured to film. Film is an analog format, so the quality is as good as your scanner.

But Gargoyles was originally created for TV, not the theater. That means it was probably captured to video, which does have a limited resolution. Now whether the original video tapes are of a higher quality than 480i NTSC, I don't know. Unless someone in here knows, it'd be worth asking Greg that when the queue opens up again.

Disney or Advantage Audio (the Gargoyles post house) might still have the master audio tapes that synced with the video. If they still work, they'd have higher quality audio than what's on the DVDs.

As for Japanese vs. American animation, almost every TV show is animated in Korea or Japan and it's been that way for years. The style difference (western vs. anime) is irrelevant. They'll give your show whatever style you want and follow the models. As for quality, I don't think it's a big deal. As long as you find a good production company overseas, it'll look great. Communication is the important factor (Gregg Vanzo has spent a ton of time at Rough Draft in Korea for this reason).

Ahh thank you so much that actually helps out alot, bout to order it right now
Victorious

Thanks for the replies about the DVDs. I have been reading the episode reviews by Juan F. Lara and it was mentioned that many episodes were done via WD-Japan. I would be interested to know, if anyone has any information, of their animating process and whether they still used cells or had transitioned to digital yet back in the mid 1990s. I know it's been over a decade since Gargoyles was animated and the Japanese love their cells, but it might possibly be a different story with Disney running the show, since they like to be at the forefront of everything techy. If they used primary cells, as something Miyazaki is still doing in the 21st century, I pipe-dream that it is theoretically possible to remaster their original work from the drawn physical media in some nice 1080p or higher format for blu-ray, which has zero chance of flying as a sane investment. They have blu-ray editions of old Disney live-action movies and animation, no? But it is hard enough for them to release the latter of season 2 as it is.

Also was wondering if there was a WD-AMERICA because I was always under the impression that Disney cartoons were animated much differently from something like anime since they were smoother and had more detail and less static images. Now I learn it was all in Japan, and am a bit indignant that an American creation, specifically Gargoyles with its great animation and from Disney, was not animated within the country. Does the US animate anything? Or anything good?

Sorry for the double post, but if I come acrossed someone who is interested in purchasing the trades, does it make a difference if I point them to Amazon or an online site for say like Hastings or Barnes & Noble?
Antiyonder

Victorius> It would be better if you picked up the Trades as buying them will help to ensure they continue the series in GN format. The first 6 issues of Gargoyles is available in Gargoyles Clan Building Volume 1. Volume 2 will have #7-8 as well as the stories that would have been published as #9-12. Gargoyles Bad Guys will contain the first 4 issues of the GBG miniseries as well as stories that would have been published as #5-6.

AND THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THE WEBSITES WHERE I CAN FIND THE COMIC BOOKS!!! (i dont see your name there :( )

Irina

Wow, and I thought I was geeky about HDTV. ;) I imagine the only practical way to test this is to buy the DVDs (or rent from Netflix) and do a direct comparison. Of course, then you add the additional element of the upscaling ability of your DVD player.

Another practical test would be to measure the video bit rate of the DVDs. But this information would be useless if you don't know the bit rate of your particular Toon Disney HD satellite feed nor the compression schemes that DirecTV uses. I personally think the DVD quality is great--better than anything I've seen on TV, but I've never received an HD feed of the show. But I don't pay really close attention to DVD video quality. The only time I've ever noticed it is with the Adventures of the Gummi Bears DVDs. They cram about 15 episodes onto each DVD and the video quality is horrible. Gargoyles DVDs only have 6-7 episodes per disc IIRC, so it's the standard high quality transfer for the format.

Of course, it goes without saying, every Gargoyles episode you ever watch will always be upscaled from 4:3 480i NTSC. Back then did they even capture the animation at a higher resolution than that? I doubt the source tapes are much higher quality. Your only hope is to buy as many animation cels as possible. ;)

One random factoid on the DVDs: the 1st five episodes of the DVD have a rear mono surround channel (is that Dolby Pro Logic?) whereas every other episode is standard 2-channel stereo. I have no idea why that is.

Landon Thomas - [lumpmoose at googles dot email dot service]

WWBM> Welcome. I wish I had a definite answer to your question but I don't. For technical questions on HD programming, I go to AVS forums: http://www.avsforum.com

Personally, I haven't tried my Gargoyles DVDs in my PS3 yet, but I know my PS3 does a great job on upscaling regular DVDs that I have tried and they do look great when I view them on my Samsung 46' LCD HDTV. And unfortunately, I couldn't compare it to Toon Disney HD because I don't pay for any HD stations currently.

I know when I watch old episodes of Everyone Loves Raymond on NBC HD, they continue to broadcast it the same way it was broadcast when it was on regular syndication with no special treatment. I would assume that Disney is doing the same thing with their older shows like Gargoyles.

So my guess is that the DVDs on a blu-ray player on your HDTV would look almost the same, maybe slightly better than on the Toon Disney HD channel.

IAnthony Tini

I would say that the DVDs are the best version available.
Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

Hey, am new to the comments section. Nice to meet all of you. I am woofwoofbarkmeow.

Just wanted to ask a question as this seems to be the only active forum/board/chat online about gargoyles. I have probably half of the series on my DirecTV DVR as Toon Disney HD is playing them in order at 3:30a over here and just cycled back to Awakening in the first season. My question is, is the Toon Disney HD version better looking than the DVD releases? The entire channel runs at 720p and I have doubts that Disney would do something like remaster the series at a higher resolution just to broadcast on late-night television in HD, but it looks really good even up close and paused. I am using a 32" 1080p Panasonic LCDTV and basically sit only a few feet away as I use it as a computer monitor too. Some DVDs just look terrible when paused, very blurry and pixelated, so I maybe under a false impression that the DVDs might be potentially worse than something broadcasted on TV. There are other things to consider like scaling and low bitrates for broadcasted HD channels, especially really saturated ones like DirecTV, but the show still looks really good to me over satellite. So basically I just want to know whether the broadcasted version is better than the DVD version, considering it uses a better type of compression and (from pure speculation and pipe-dreaming) that Disney just MIGHT have given it a facelift with higher resolution of the original source for HD viewing.

It could definitely be a reason behind incorrect spelling. But, in my opinion, it's not a good enough reason. They should just type slower or go back and proofread before they post.

Hi,everyone what's up I'm new here so just wanted to introduce myself. What's funny about Gargoyles is how Greg favored Macbeth. Weird sisters is actually what witches were called in that.
immortalgoliath

L.T. Williams- one of the sisters said it in "Avalon part 2"
I think it was Seline-but you should double check that.

Purplegoldfish

Quick question: Does anyone remember who FIRST said, "All things are true..." and in which episode?

I feel like it was one of the Weird Sisters, but I can't remember which Sister, which form she was in at the time or which episode.

L.T. Williams

my two cents: There's a line to be crossed with the spelling thing for me. Usually when something in an otherwise well written document, story, blog, ect. is mispelled it stands out. It's okay to correct those people and in most cases they're appreciative. However, it's not the same with things with message boards. A mispelled word or name doesn't bother me at all (unless it comes up again and again, then I'd politely point it out). But people who come across as Wholier-than-thou types who correct everything you say (i.e. Grammar Nazi) irritate me to no end. Who the hell wants to talk to a person where you need a dictionary on your lap every time you talk to them?
and there's a difference between pointing something out and being just plain rude and obnoxious.

anyway, I'm not going to type "rolling on the floor laughing my ass off" every time I find something funny ;)

but anyways, thanx again for all the welcomes! :)

Irina

Demonskrye> The show in particular will have limits as to which characters can appear. Superman and cast they are keeping out because they want to focus on the lesser known characters. Wonder Woman can only appear on a show/cartoon if she is the main character or part of the regular cast like in Justice League. Plus others like Animal Man or The Phantom Stranger I understand can't appear because they are part of DC's Vertigo line.

Now the comic book tie in on the other hand is a different story. #1 featured an appearance by Power Girl and Lex Luthor, plus some pics for the comic depicted Superman, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel in the show's art design.

bluewyvern> This is a great "vocalizing netspeak" video, though the latter bit is rather WoW-specific. LFG is "looking for group"; the abbreviations following that allude to 20+ person dungeons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEWgs6YQR9A

Kerry (Kth) Boyd

Kerry> I have that problem ALL THE TIME. I'm a book nerd, and no one ever says these things in spoken conversation. Except me. But I don't know how anything is pronounced. My only hope is that my interlocutors don't, either.

Also, vocalizing internet-speak is annoying. I think most people say LOL as "el-oh-el", but my inclination is just to pronounce it "loll." And "rahfull." OMG and WTF I would actually be more inclined to vocalize as the full words, since they're all single-syllables and it's just as fast as spelling out the letters (much faster in the case of WTF or any other acronym containing W). Same with BTW, but I know from watching Dr. Horrible that people apparently spell that out!

These are the problems you face when there's a disconnect between your spoken and written language. Sigh.

As for correcting grammar and spelling -- I only mention corrections for things like blog posts that are "published" as a tip to the writer, but I generally leave comments, chats, forum posts, etc. alone. It's just not worth it. But I work as a proofreader, so, yeah, I see every single error. Sometimes it hurts.

bluewyvern
"Attend the petty jealousies and angers that prey upon your heart."

Todd> You do have a point there. I know I've had that problem before, even with all the reading I've done. I've also had the opposite: totally butchering pronunciation because I've only seen a word in print and never heard it spoken (mispronouncing "subtle" in front of your high school peers isn't good for your self-esteem :P).
Kerry (Kth) Boyd

While you guys debate spelling I'm going to "Dunking Doughnuts".
IAnthony Tini

I wonder if a lot of the spelling errors we see these days might come from being less familiar with the word or name in print than in an oral format (particularly movies or television, in the case of fictional characters or words that seldom come up in everyday speech). People might have so seldom seen that word on a page that they'd have to guess at the spelling.
Todd Jensen
www.gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php

Just wanted to add my 2 cents on the spelling/grammar thing.

In general, I think correcting someone's spelling or grammar (especially on the internet) is stupid. If I see someone who has bad grammar or spelling, I'm not going to correct them--I'm just not going to take them as seriously as someone with good spelling and grammar. Non-native English speakers have an excuse to make quite a few mistakes since learning a language is difficult, so I don't mind when they make lots of mistakes. But someone who spent their whole life speaking English and writing English should know better. A few careless mistakes here and there are fine, since we are all human after all. But making a huge number of spelling and grammar errors and just generally being too lazy to write correctly is something that immediately makes me think someone is just plain stupid or lazy, and I won't hold their opinions in very high regard. I won't correct them, but I won't take them seriously either.

However, in my opinion, spelling people's names correctly (even if it is a fictional character) is important. Spelling affects pronunciation and nobody likes having their name butchered. I think it's a good idea to correct people's spelling when they get someone's name wrong. Furthermore, I don't think people should take personal offense at this--the response should be something like, "Thank you for correcting me; now I know how to spell this person's name right and I won't make this mistake next time."

Anyway, people's names are serious business and we should all try to get them right.

Rebel

spideyforever> Given adequate time (and the OK from DC and WB), I imagine that "The Brave and the Bold" will get to every character in the DCU, given that the formula is Batman with a constantly rotating cast of heroes and villains. And the often unrelated "cold openings" are a big help in getting even more characters into the mix. I'm a little surprised to see that Robin will be showing up though, since the series is so much about Batman teaming up with a different hero each week. I wonder if Robin will just come and go like the rest of the supporting cast, or if the second season will have him as Batman's permanent partner while keeping the guest hero formula going.

Irina> Just so you know, "Jalapena" is not a real expression of frustration and most people don't respond to situations that confuse them with "What sorcery is this?" ;) Aside from that, "Gargoyles" is a fine way to learn English. Just from your typing, I couldn't tell at all that English was not your native language, so it must have worked pretty well.

Stitch> Ideally, no one should get so attached to fictional characters or stories that they feel personally slighted when someone insults them, or seems to. But opinions are a somewhat personal thing and, depending on how it's phrased, an attack on someone's opinion can get a little personal. For example, if someone tells me "I disagree with your opinion," I may not agree with them and i may get a little irritated, but I usually don't take it to heart. However, if someone tells me "Your opinion is stupid and useless," I'm probably going to feel insulted. Differing opinions are fine. Hurling insults around is not, and it is making it personal, whether you really know the person in question or not.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

nope, im a chick and i have no idea who or what forum you're talking about.
and please tell me (after partially proving my point for me), how can things get personal if we know nothing about the real people behind the screen, other than their domain names and oppinions on shows?
im sorry, maybe my emotions are just iron plated, but given what little information we all have on eachother, it seems to me like the most personally offensive thing you cuold possibly say is something like "yo mama!".
or am i to understand that we're takeing fictional characters so deeply to heart that it's war if anyone should insult them?

sTiTcH

Actually this isn't the Chat Room, this the Comment Room. Chat Room is one down.
And since there are real people behind the screen, even if you can't see them, yeah, you can get personal.

Btw, your not that annoying guy on the tv-foren.de forum, are you? His favorite phrase is "but you might wanna think better on it.", too.

One of the Gargoyles books (I think the poster/book) was the first English book I ordered myself. And reading Gargyoles fanfiction (even those with questionable grammar and spelling) was better English practice than what we got taught in school (first teacher was okay, second teacher usually told us about everything but English).

That is all I will say.

In Batman related news Joker, Riddler, and Catwoman are going to be in the Brave and the Bold at some point.

Robin will be in the season finale, so will Flash(disappointed it's Barry Allen because I prefer Wally West but I guess they're going with classics). Wally might be introduced like they did with Blue Beetle you'll never know.

For a little trivia, The guy who voiced Green Lantern(Hal Jordan) is Loren Lester who voiced Robin in Batman the Animated Series and Nightwing in the New Batman Adventures. Though his voice was easily recognizable I knew it right away. Sadly he won't reprise it because they don't want to use any use anyone from the DCAU. Which means unfortunately no Mark Hamill as Joker.

Spideyforever> The thing is, I have had plenty of debates with people who like that character. I don't like that character, and I make no apologies. But, here's the thing. Never, not once, did it get personal. No one ever called anyone names, or told anyone to shut up.

Instead of doing that, you could have debated the merits of the character. Instead, you took it personally, behaved like a petulant child, and blew a gasket.

It's called having a debate. And this is an opinion forum, you're going to encounter people who disagree with you. So, instead of blowing a gasket, talk like an adult, and you will be treated as one.

The only reason I got mad recently was because I made a post about something I liked and someone bashed something I liked about it and I didn't like that someone was bashing it so I told them to keep their opinion to themselves and they actually said that It stinks when someone bashing something you like.

Algernon> Riddler could have messed with the League's head by giving them hard clues to find bombs or something. He is an original remember of the Legion of Doom as is Scarecrow which is why Bat-embargo was gay. Riddler wasn't even included when Family Guy made fun of the Super-Friends in an episode(Scarecrow was though). It still is annoying considered he's one of my favorite Batman villains.

Does anyone else think Dracula's design in The Batman could have been Ra's design? Was Two-Face left out ofe the show because of The Dark Knight or was he just too dark for the show? Where was Mad Hattter(just curious)

spideyforever

Demonskrye> I've heard that line of reasoning before but it seems to be based on the assumtion that viewers are complete morons. If kids are smart enough to make the distinction between the Optimus Prime from the Michael Bay Tranformers movie and the Optimus from Animated, the they can surely tell the difference between movie Scarecrow and cartoon Scarecrow.

That said I was never really bothered by the JLU Bat-embargo. With the exeptions of Joker and Ras al Ghul, none of Batman's rogues have any business faceing down the League anyway.

Algernon
Until the violence stops

The Clock King was also able to be used in JLU, and that's only because he is really a Green Arrow rogue.
Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]

Algernon> Big companies somehow got it into their heads that audiences can't handle seeing two different versions of a character at one time. Marvel has gone so far as to have all of their comics make changes to be more like the current movie versions of the characters. When "Spider-Man" three came out, Marvel had a big multi-issue event with the end result of getting Spidey back into the black costume so that moviegoers who had seen him in monotone in the movie could go to their local comic shop and pick up a comic with a black costumed Spider-Man. It's also led to some planned comics featuring alternate takes on characters who had big movie releases at the time getting canceled for fear that new readers might find them "too confusing" or "too weird." Now i can certainly see the logic of giving new fans a nice bridge into the world of the comics when one of your characters has a big movie out. I remember when "Batman and Robin" was released, DC did a very sensible thing a produced one-shot comics featuring about four of the main character from the film. (Part of what made in sensible was that the comics had nearly nothing in common with the film aside from the characters. Also, that is probably the last time you'll see me use "Batman and Robin" and "sensible" in the same sentence.) But trying to reshape your entire ongoing comics universe to more closely resemble the film just for the sake of the likely few fans of the movie who will be convinced to pick up a comic for the first time? I don't think it's worth it.

Greg B> Did they pronounce his name wrong? I must have developed selected amnesia about that fact.

Supermorff> Heh, I saw the first episode of "Buffy" and hated it. My sister got into it later and though I was never quite as big a fan as she was, I came around and was taping the final episodes for her by the end.

My understanding was that the JLU Bat-embargo was because of "The Batman" rather than "Batman Begins." Which makes a modicum more sense, since you're talking about two animated television shows rather than two stories being told in entirely different media. Bruce Timm commented on this when I saw him at SDCC and he didn't feel they were too limited by it. The Batman characters have certainly received their due in animation and it gave the creators a chance to focus more on some other characters. It's probably a good part of the reason why...

***JLU SPOILER AHEAD!!!***

...Phantasm shows up as the would-be killer of Terry's parents in "Epilogue." Being original to the animated universe, she wasn't covered by the Bat-embargo, yet she still had a connection to the world of Batman.

***END SPOILER***

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I know it's not animation, but I avoided Buffy the Vampire Slayer for years because I was convinced it would be awful. It wasn't until season 5 that I finally watched it and subsequently ate my words. All of them. And bought the DVDs.

Algernon> It's something about viewers becoming confused between the two properties if the villains are treated differently. It does get ridiculous, though. The 90s Spidey series couldn't use Sandman or Electro because they were written into a film that never got made. The MTV series couldn't use Doc Ock because of Spider-Man 2, which hadn't yet been released. Justice League Unlimited couldn't use ANY Batman villains because of Batman Begins. Stupid.

Supermorff

Antiyonder> I never understood that logic of that embargo, that's like telling Greg Weisman he can't use Green Goblin, Doc Ock or Venom because they've already appeared in movies. Warner Brothers owns virtualy every DC character anyway so I know it's not a licencing issue.
Algernon

Spideyforever> It's spelled Ra's al Ghul. There is no letter 'J' in his name.

And while I am here, and on the subject. It's pronounced Raysh not Razz or Rahj. "Batman Begins" got his name wrong, it was the one part of that movie that bugged me.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Register for the Gathering of the Gargoyles]

Their appearance in Batman Begins made them off limits to the show. Scarecrow was infact suppose to be introduced in the Season 4 episode Strange New World.
Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]

Why were Scarecrow and Ra'j Al Ghul left out of the Batman? Scarecrow would have made a perfect partner for Hugo Strange and the Society of Shadows would have fitted in perfectly. The design for Dracula is probably how Ra'j would have looked though. What about Mad-Hatter? Two-Face was obviously too dark for the show.

Irina> First of all, welcome!

Secondly, what Tony said. Right now, the best thing we as fans can do is to convince Disney that "Gargoyles" is still a property that can make them a lot of money. And the best way to do that is to spend money on "Gargoyles."

If you didn't know already, Season One and the first half of Season Two are available on DVD. If you don't have them yet, you can buy them or ask someone to buy them for you next time your asked what you'd like for gifts for a special occasion. If you know people who like "Gargoyles" or who you think would like it, you can buy it for them if you can afford to, or simply tell them about it.

Comic book publisher Slave Labor Graphics has released eight issues of "Gargoyles" and four issues of the spin-off "Gargoyles: Bad Guys" both written by Greg Weisman. You can buy the collected book of issues 1-6 now and the collected issues 6-12 and the collected "Bad Guys" miniseries should be out sometime later this year. SLG no longer had the Disney license, but they would like to try to get it again and publish more "Gargoyles" comics, if the trade paperbacks sell well. Again, if you know people who like "gargoyles" or might like "Gargoyles," tell them about the comics.

There is some other current "Gargoyles" merchandise out there. Two t-shirts have been released and two different Goliath statues are coming out. If you're interested and can afford it, consider picking those up.

There are probably still some petitions floating around the internet and you can feel free to sign them if you want. My personal feeling is that the comics are our best shot at getting new "Gargoyles" stories and the best way to ensure that there are more comics is to buy the ones that are out and get other people to do the same. Likewise, the best way to get the rest of season two on DVD is to buy the existing DVDs and spread the word to people who might like them as well. Petitions are fine, but they don't really speak to a company as clearly as money does.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Irina> Buy the DVDs. Buy the comics. Spread the word.

Irina - [Iryadchikova at yahoo dot com]

I find it hard to rate The Batman as a whole, mainly because the quality seemed to go up and down like a yo-yo frome season to season and even episode to episode. Season one was pretty bland and forgetable with the exeption of Greg's Clayface episodes. Season four on the otherhand was borderline brilliant easily on par with the Timmverse.

In short it had it's ups and it's downs but I'm not really sure which it had more of.

Algernon

I don't think it's that strange to compare or prefer an actor's animated roles over their live action work (or vice versa, if you enjoyed their live action work more). While I loved Star Trek: The Next Generation pretty hard from when I got into it at age 9 to when it concluded when I was 14 and had a lot of fondness for most of those characters...I think Jonathan Frakes entertained a hell of a lot more as Xanatos than he did as Riker. And Marina Sirtis' Troi and Demona...hey, despite a childhood TV-crush, Demona wins, she obviously relished her role as a villain. As for some of the other TNG actors, they maybe didn't have as much of a chance to make an impression on Gargoyles as those two, but I like Puck just as much as I like Data, and I think I liked Worf more than Coldstone. TNG, aside from the movies, is reaching a little far back in my memory though. I have Gargoyles (at least, Season 1 and Season 2 Part 1) much fresher in my memory. No clue if I'll ever get around to a Trek re-watch or catching the series in the franchise I missed (the entirety of Original Trek--I've only seen like two episodes and a couple of the films--the second half of DS9, Voyager, maybe the animated series), not sure if it's worth it.

On Batman...I haven't seen more than a minute of The Batman. Since a friend owns all five seasons on DVD, plus out of curiosity for Greg W's and some certain voice actors' involvement, I might get around to burning through them eventually, we'll see. I'm not in the mood lately, having caught and been burned out on Dark Knight fever this past year and before that having just come off an insane marathon at the end of 2007 of the entire DC Animated Universe (aside from The Zeta Project, which doesn't hit DVD until March, and Static Shock, which probably won't see release for a while--I haven't seen a second of those). Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series to a lesser degree, Batman Beyond (to me this is just Bruce Wayne's story continued and more or less concluded though, and I freely admit it was my favorite of the bunch), and the surprisingly good Justice League/Unlimited, are gold. Hard to top in superhero cartoon-land (haven't seen Spectacular Spider-Man yet).

Kris - [plekopleko at hotmail dot com]

I still feel a bit freaked out that Ellen Yin bore such a striking resemblance to Elisa (especially in outfit) with it apparently (as far as Greg Weisman knows) being pure coincidence.

Batman> I didn't really like "The Batman." I gave it a shot, in part because I didn't want to fall into the same trap I had with "Batman Beyond" and even "The New Batman Adventures" (where the characters designs changed) of sticking with my initial "This is different from what I am used to and therefore I hate it" reaction. But the show didn't really appeal to me for the most part. It just didn't seem as smartly written as the original animated series, with more emphasis on straight action and a little too much reworking of many of the characters for my tastes. There were some episodes that I liked, including the ones Greg wrote that I've seen and I think it got better as it went along. And I still get a kick out of Robin bursting through the paper covered hoop in the intro. But as I'll tell pretty much anyone in earshot, Kevin Conroy IS Batman to me and MY Batman doesn't need to write "Alucard" backwards and take it over to a mirror to confirm that, reversed, it spells "Dracula."
Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I do agree that the comment about the NYCC SLG/Disney comments is vague as well. I think until we hear something more solid, don't get our hopes up. Maybe Disney is aware of an impending SLG license renewal or something and just blurbed this out, but I think it proabably means just the trades. Lets hope thats not the end of Gargoyles comics from Disney/SLG. I can live with the occasional one shot graphic novel that Greg W hopefully would still write.
DK2

I had trouble getting into "The Batman." One of the reasons being that I grew up on the Animated Series in the early 90s, and Kevin Conroy set an impossibly high standard on that. Actually, pretty much all the voice talent on the Animated Series was excellent. Mark Hamill set a standard for the character of the Joker that stayed in place for sixteen years, until Heath Ledger came along.

Hell, I'd say that the Joker was Mark Hamill's best role ever (yes, better than Luke Skywalker). Some might say comparing a person's live action work to their work in animation is like apples and oranges, but I don't think so.

@ Demon: Batman Beyond is good? I just started on THE BATMAN, and was totally let down by how childish and uninspiring the entire thing was. It was as if the SAW-guys did BATMAN... like "NO WAY, THERES A GREEN HAIRED CHIMP RUNNING AROUND KILLING PEOPLE!!"

@ spidey: No prob. I know the same thing - I'm just attending a Filmfest, and the film I just saw was TERRIFIC, it was one of the best films on the festival, and recieved a lot of applause. A LOT! Guilty Pleasures> I resisted "Batman Beyond" on principle for quite a while before watching enough of it to accept the fact that it was actually pretty good. And had I been somewhat older when it came on, I think I would have hated "TaleSpin" on principle. I think I've said it here before, but by all rights, "TaleSpin" should not work. Put the concept on paper and it may well be the stupidest thing you've ever read. "Okay, you remember Baloo, the bear from "The Jungle Book," which by the way is set entirely in the Indian jungle? So the show stars Baloo. But instead of the jungle in India, he lives in a vaguely 1930s harbor town. And he's a cargo pilot. Oh and Shere Khan is there too, but he's the head of the big corporation in town. And King Louie is there too, but he runs a bar." On the face of it, it makes no sense. It sounds like an absolutel travesty. Yet somehow, it ended up being a smart, entertaining, well put together show. Who'da thunk?

Antiyonder: "I mean, there are particular shows I enjoy that are certainly craptacular, but I don't feel the need to silence those who rightly are turned off from the show."

Ah, yes, the "guilty" pleasures, there's nothing quite like being able to go off worse on a series than any critique could ever do, due to the virtue of having watched that much more often. Although I think we shocked a stout newbie once with the running sarcastic comments.

But the worse is a series you want to hate with all your heart for various reasons, and you have to give it grudgy and resisting respect for actually being decent (and now I'm off hiding under a pillow, because I forgot which series I wanted to use as an example).

As for SLG and more, mature Disney material, I hope it's not more Tron. I got all six issues and besides the trouble I had with the art, I just really, really dislike Jet Bradley and am of the firm opinion that something called Tron and based upon Tron should contain Tron. Heck, he wasn't even in the (rather badly coded) computer game, just one or two sentences that he been rewritten and his code incorporated into Ma3a. *grr* Gets me boiling every time, at least the Game Boy Advance game contained Tron and was very Tron (though rather short, but with sweet mindless minigames).

Otherwise, I'm hoping for nice shunky Gargoyles graphic novels, one every or every other year, written by Greg (accept no substitutes), because otherwise I might as well just read Gargoyles fanfiction.

You are certainly welcome to express you feelings on various topics here. But you have to understand that this is an open discussion forum and if you throw out a topic for discussion, people are going to say what they think about it, whether they agree with you or not, and so long as they don't attack you personally, that's fine. If you can handle that, great. If not - if you really find it so impossible to bear when someone dislikes something that you think is good, then maybe you should seek out a forum where everyone agrees with you, or start a blog where you can say whatever you want and control the responses. If you continue to both get angry at people for expressing opinions you don't like and get upset when no one responds to your comments, I don't think you're going to have a lot of fun here.

Anonymouse> That's pretty much how i felt about "Mummies Alive!" I don't think anyone here would dispute that ancient Egyptian mythology is extremely fertile source material. And as I said before, the episode synopses I read sounded pretty fun. (But then again, the episode synopses for "The Goliath Chronicles" sounded good too.) One I particularly recall reading about was an episode later in the series, possibly a season finale, with a bunch of secondary characters getting together and talking about all the bizarre recent "mummy sightings." It sounded fun, but the show itself just didn't seem as good as I had imagined it. I recall the scene where I really started laughing at (unfortunately not with) the show, where two of the mummies are trying to teach a newly discovered mummy how to transform into his powered-up form by saying "With the Strength of Ra!" and they literally say "With" and wait for him to repeat, then "the" and wait for him to repeat that.

Landon> I had also noticed that none of the panelists were necessarily people who would have direct knowledge of the current state of the Disney/SLG deal. So it's possible one of them knew about the graphic novels second or third hand and ended up phrasing it that way.

Tony> Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, though I think you did a better job of it. Still, I think it would be very odd for the panelists to say that and literally just mean that SLG is still going to be publishing comics aimed at an older audience which don't have anything to do with Disney. It was a Disney comics panel after all, so the assumption would be that the conversation would be about Disney comics, not SLG's general publishing plans for the year, especially with no one from SLG present. And since we know "Gargoyles" sold the best of SLG's Disney titles, it wouldn't seem likely that SLG would go forward with any other properties and not "Gargoyles." It could mean something is going on, but unless we hear different, I still think it just means the trades are coming out.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I think what we can take away from that article, is that they are just making a statement of fact on why they are speaking about SLG and their associated involvement with the Disney brand.

For example, if Shia LaBeouf was there and they said in the article, "Shia LaBeouf, from the popular Disney show "Even Stevens" will continue to make more movies.", one couldn't infer from that statement that "Even Stevens" would be returning to TV. They are just making an association to a "thing" and the brand. That's all.

Anthony Tini

To me, this is the most interesting line from the CBR report: "In a New York Comic Con panel hosted by representatives from Disney's various publishing arms, including editors Rich Thomas, Steve Behling, Nachie Castro, Christian Beranek and Ahmet Zappa". Via Google-fu, it seems Thomas and Behling are former Disney Adventures editors and Beranek and Zappa are from Kingdom Comics. Nachie Castro moved from DC to Disney Publishing in 9/2008. Would any of these people have direct knowledge of whatever it is SLG and Disney are negotiating?

The phrase 'will continue' in the quote "Slave Labor Graphics... will continue marketing to teens and older readers, releasing new stories throughout the year" is pretty strong for a canceled license, but it's probably generic marketing-speak at a promotional panel.

To which of the about seven to twenty Transformers shows are you referring to? (Transformers' fans will merrily rip each other apart for liking or disliking the "wrong" show.)

In my opinion Mummies Alive had a lot of unused potential, on the other hand I never go into Bob Morane. But maybe that's due to the fact, that Bob Morane had to measure up to Gargoyles for me, while Mummies Alive was never in that league.
Or it could have been the missing magic and otherworldliness (sp?) that had me looking favorably at the one show but not the other.

@ guys: No need for you to jump in for me. As stated before, this only enheats a situation. If somebody adresses you, it is OK to write something or ignore it. If somebody calls my tastes bad and tells me to shut up, I handle them themselves. So, no ned to jump in and argue. ;)

@ spidey: The things with MA is simply that it failed to stand on its own. I can see how fans of Transformers or Mighty Ducks could enjoy it - but I don't like those two shows either.

It is OK for you to like any show - to me, it was a disappointment, that ranged from a bad introductory song to the characters and plotlines.

I advis you to check out the late 90s cartoon version of BOB MORANE though. I think it only run for 26 EPs or something, which is a true shame. The story is in depth and characterisation similiar to BATMAN TAS and GARGOYLES and quite complex.

DK2> I checked the article and the actual quote is this:

"Slave Labor Graphics, publishers of Disney's immensely popular "Gargoyles" comic and its spinoff "Gargoyles: Bad Guys," will continue marketing to teens and older readers, releasing new stories throughout the year."

It's kind of vague and doesn't explicitly state that there will be new "Gargoyles" comics. Boiled down, it essentially says: "SLG, which publishes Disney's "Gargoyles" comics, will keep releasing comics aimed at an older audience in 2009, presumably Disney comics because that's what the panel is about." My best guess is that they mean the trades, since six issue worth of new material is nothing to sneeze at. We know Dan Vado wants to go back to Disney with a new offer for releasing graphic novels, but my impression was that he'd be doing that at some later date after seeing how the trades sold. It's possible that a deal was just reached within the last week or two for SLG to retain the license to produce new "Gargoyles" material beyond the two trades. It may be worth asking Dan Vado about it, but my money is on the comment referring to the trades.

Disney does seem to be spreading their comics licenses between a good number of publishers. Near as I can tell, here's how it breaks down:

Gemstone - Reprints of classic Disney comics
Kingdom - Disney live action properties and original concepts
Boom! - Pixar and Muppets
Hyperion - Picture books styled like comics for very young readers, which don't sound like they're based on any existing Disney properties
SLG - (If they continue any licenses) A hodgepodge of licenses geared at teens and twentysomethings.

What keeps worrying me about SLG is that their licenses weren't as clear cut as all the other publishers. Rather than "Disney TV shows" or "theme park rides," they have a selection of licenses only related in the fact that they are designed to appeal to SLG's target audience. I wouldn't be surprised if Kingdom Comics laid claim to "TRON." It seems like Vado is looking to pursue "Gargoyles" as a separate license if he does go back to the table with Disney, which I think is the right move. With all the potential spin-offs, being the publisher that does "Gargoyles" comics is enough of a Disney license identity by itself.

I've not posted here in awhile but I do glance back the odd time. I think it was near the end of October last year did I find out about the status of the Gargoyles comics from SLG. Not pleased about the individual issues not coming at all but will wait for the trades. We know Dan Vado may try to continue to pursue the license sometime this year. Then I saw this Disney Comics panel from the CBR website from the NY Comicon:

In the text of that it states that SLG will still be doing Gargoyles comics during the year. Now what is this about or is the information wrong? It seems that Disney is catering their comics to various ages and categories of properties. SLG for Gargoyles is for their older teen and up readers. Gemstome does the old Disney reprint material and Boom does original current material, Hyperion does kids and parents stuff, Kingdom Comics would be movie related material reimagined. Wonder if the SLG bit means anything though?

*ECHO ECHO ECHO* Sorry for the double post but this is just ridiculous. Come on away we go on with the show.

Well anyways I think Mummies Alive was OK for a comedy but not for serious viewing. In some ways I view MA like the original concept for Gargoyles.
