Forshame, Taleweaver. You just made the same mistake as CR! in his video about the Green M&M. Cree is not a member of the convoluted Summers Family Tree. Heh.

Anyways, I did mention Madame Xanadu having a familiar former Gargoyles voice, I just didn't name her. I thought Cree's presence was quite obvious and was rather surprised when Masterdramon mentioned the vocals of Thom Adcox and Ed Asner but neglected her.

Hi all,
I admit Young Justice had me jonesing to reconnect with all my Gargoyle buddies. Jsut saw Denial and thought I'd take a peek at what everyone is saying. I'm a bit surprised no one mentioned Cree Summers as Madame Xanadu yet. I'm not putting spoiler tags, because that's for plot and story not production.

Young Justice related if there ever is shipping between Wally and Artemis, I call dibs on naming the couple 'Wall Art'.

Taleweaver - [rfootman@gmail.com]

heya, folks! long time not post.

I expected to like Young Justice, like I did with Justice League (+Unlimited), but I find myself loving it, almost to the point I loved -and still love- Gargoyles.
the show gets better and better, and constantly surprises me.
The narrative qualities of Gargoyles and the brutal, something gritty action that made Under the Red Hood my favorite DCUAM feature with BM/S Apocalypse.

Anyway, I saw on a forum that the next episode will be in March. Is that true? no episode next week? what is YJ preempted for? That makes people gushing on Twitter gushing over Smallville, without any mentioned to "our" show, even more annoying to me.

Looking forward more episodes, I'm officially hooked!
(btw, has anyone though about a Young Justice/Gargoyles crossover fanfiction yet?)

Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones talks about the cartoon, the comic series and the Darkwing/Disney Afternoon comeback: http://fullecirclestuff.blogspot.com/2011/02/darkwing-duck-dangerous-conversation.html

His perspective on Greg's transition:

Our initial development was watched closely, as well as the first few scripts, but after that we were free to go wild. Every show has a development executive to give notes to, and ours was Greg Weisman who had a background as an editor at DC comics. It was a great match. Of course, Greg came over to the light side and became an animation producer of his own creation, Gargoyles. Greg is at Warner Brothers now producing Young Justice for Cartoon Network.

And on Darkwing coming back:

Darkwing Duck is 100% owned by Disney. I have nothing to do with it. As to blogging, I've done some but I don't need to live in the past. I have an original comedy in development with Cartoon Network...

I tried to tell people at Disney that Darkwing's original fans are now starting to have kids of their own, a perfect target for Darkwing Duck direct-to-video releases. But Disney has different plans for their home video originals, and John Lasseter was way too busy in the early 90's to have Darkwing on the radar. I dare say there are few executives now who understand how big The Disney Afternoon was in its day. George Lucas once said that DuckTales was to syndication what Star Wars was to movies.

If you want more Darkwing stuff you, have to buy the Darkwing stuff that's out there. If the existing DVDs sell big, Disney will certainly release the rest of the episodes. However, I did meet a Disney marketing executive at San Diego Comic Con who said there are Darkwing fans in the lower echelons who are now entering middle-management positions. That could change Disney's outlook. So I guess there's hope for you after all.

So Tad thinks that Darkwing could come back and he's optimistic about that. But he still views Darkwing as his past, not his future. It's an interesting difference between the two fandoms. For Gargoyles, you could draw a continuous line from the premiere of episode 1 to the fan mailing lists/Usenet/message boards/web sites to the Gatherings to AskGreg to the DVDs to the comics to today. Gargoyles never really stopped in the fans' minds. Tad, however, views Darkwing as a product that ended 18 years ago and could be coming back, but as nostalgia.

In the same article though, Tad brags about his new Darkwing Duck story in the upcoming trade. So maybe there's hope for him yet. ;)

Xanadu is only
Nimue
in the Vertigo comic. The animated version definitely doesn't bear much resemblance to the comics version..

Not a fan of Klarion's voice. He sounds too old for the role imo.

I really enjoyed yesterday's episode. With it was delving into that rich mythology, it felt a little like an episode of Gargoyles. Of course, all the voice actor cameos helped.

<sigh> That's what I get for not using the preview function. I don't suppose there's any way to fix that spoiler tag (or Supermorff's handle, for that matter).

Upermorff> Oh, I don't doubt that there's quite the possibility that Madame Xanadu may become a magical force to be reckoned with. Heck, I suppose she was someone that Nelson might have been considering for
receiving the Helmet of Fate
. I'm just surprised by her charlatan nature and that it seems likely that her true identity as per the comics seems to be gone. Admittedly,
Merlin stripped away Nimue's magic as she imprisoned him
so the YJ version being a charlatan kind of makes sense in that regard. Still, I can't see the "Sorceror Supreme" not knowing who she really was if indeed her comic origins held true (or Madame Xanadu not knowing who Kent Nelson was, for that matter).

Heh, "Sorceror Supreme." I don't think I've ever heard that term used for Doctor Fate, only Doctor Strange and those of his ilk. That's an amusing little bit of DC-Marvel cross-pollination there.

Masterdramon/Rebel> Yes, I think that too.

Supermorff

Was anyone else somewhat surprised that Madame Xanadu was depicted as a fraud in yesterday's episode? After all, in DC proper, she's actually
Nimue
. I'm somewhat surprised Greg didn't take that route.

Oh, and speaking of Madame Xanadu, you forgot another returning voice from Gargoyles voice there, Masterdramon. Also, the Garg-voice we already knew of (Jeff Bennett) was a bit strange in the episode as well; I'm curious as to why the robotic overlay wasn't used on Red Tornado's voice this time.

I do like the idea of Brooklyn creating the Phoenix Gate, though I'm not sure whether it makes sense as the way his timedancing ends. If Brooklyn got back to modern day Manhattan by creating and using the Phoenix Gate, he would then have to return it to wherever it originally showed up in history so that the loop would be closed. So far as we know, Brooklyn doesn't have the Phoenix Gate currently and I doubt he'd want to do any more time travelling now that he's finally home.

I think Greg said a one point that once Brooklyn returned to Manhattan, the Phoenix Gate would go back to where it started, completing the loop. I seem to recall that the implication or outright statement was that the Gate returned to where and when it originally picked up Brooklyn, but that could have changed by now.

Demonskrye - [<---Bill Justice at The Ink and Pixel Club]

And if the Phoenix came after Brooklyn because he helped bind it in the Phoenix Gate, "TimeDancer" has a proper "Gargoyles"-style time loop.

(I'd noticed that Brooklyn's first Timedance was the only "Gargoyles" time travel story - apparently - to not have a time loop in it. "Vows" had Xanatos going back in time to ensure that he gets the 10th century coin he received in 1975 which founded his fortune - and Demona attempting to change history with her past self, failing, but nudging her past self closer towards helping to betray the castle in 994. "Avalon Part Two" had the Archmage going back in time to rescue himself and set the events in motion that would make him the "enhanced Archmage". "M.I.A." had Goliath going back in time to bring Griff to the present, thus producing the disappearance of Griff in 1940 that set off the chain of events leading to Goliath going back in time. But Brooklyn's adventure in 997 had no obvious "time loop" features on this level. Yet if his forty years of TimeDancing end with his trapping or helping to trap the Phoenix in the Gate - and it singles him out for attention when the Gate is destroyed because it remembers Brooklyn trapping it - then we have a big "time loop" after all.)

Todd Jensen - [merlyn1@mindspring.com]

Phoenix Gate> Greg B., I really think your idea that it is Brook himself who binds the Phoenix in the Gate is a cool one. And it goes a long way in explaining why the Phoenix singled him out for the TimeDance.

"Why is this? What have they got against finishing off their Show seasons?

I know they released all of Home Improvement and The Golden Girls, and now they are releasing them in complete series sets.

Can't they do this with all of there shows?

Don't they know there is a huge nostolgia market for these properties?"

Maybe Home Improvement and Golden Girls make them a whole lot of money consistently. But for some reason when it comes to making a releasing a follow up volume to their animated shows, the sales seem to declines.

Gargoyles Season 1 sold well enough that Disney felt it in their best interests to release a second set, but as you noted, many fans delayed purchasing it or refused to buy it at all. Yeah it sucks that we won't get the rest of the series for the time being, but refusal to buy those sets tells Disney that the series is a poor investment.

Now lets look at the titles released by Boom Comics. Rescue Rangers #1 sold about 5,000 copies, the majority of Darkwing Duck sold about 6,000 copies, but all of the Uncle Scrooge issues producing Ducktales comic stories sold about 3,000 copies at the most.

"Don't they know there is a huge nostolgia market for these properties?"

If that were the case, then the aforementioned DVDs and comics released would have had consistently great sales. As it stand Darkwing Duck (the comics anyway) is the exception to the rule.

Greg B. was saying he (like we all are) was hoping for an announcement from Boom! about a Gargoyles comic.

Well I started a thread at the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/list/18) about Disney Series on DVD and why they won't release them fully. The thread is called "Disney Series" with a particularly heavy slant towards Gargoyles.

I also let people know about the comic... spreading the word and all of that, as I always try to do when I can...

The Sisters said the Gate was forged on Avalon. No one ever said, or even hinted that a Child of Oberon did it.

If binding the phoenix with the Gate again is what sends Brooklyn home, it needs to be his accomplishment.

The Weird Sisters said the Gate was forged on Avalon, presumably by a Child of Oberon who had the Phoenix in mind. I always assumed it was bound to the Gate by one of Oberon's Children. By the time Brooklyn arrived in Rome, the Phoenix may have been bound to the Gate, since the Roman Magus was the first or of the first to combine the Eye of Odin, the Phoenix Gate and the Grimorum.
Richard Jackson

My first thought was that the Roman Magus who cast the Spell of Humility might have had something to do with it, but the Brooklyn possibility works as well.
Todd Jensen - [merlyn1@mindspring.com]

MATT> Maybe it's Brooklyn himself who does it. He has forty years to learn how.

Disco is from Hell. Not the cool part of Hell with all the murderers, but the lame ass part with the really bad accountants.

Greg has recently revealed a minor, but interesting piece of information regarding the Phoenix Gate. Apparently, someone bound the Phoenix at some point in the Gate. Obviously, it was Goliath that set the Phoenix free, but I had never considered that someone actually created the Gate.

I suspect that this is something we would see in the final episodes of TimeDancer. The Phoenix is reimprisoned, beginning the cycle over again and the person who creates the Gate sends Brook and family home.
Maybe...?

Curious that the DuckTales news is "embargoed" till tomorrow, seems a shame to deny the news from featuring in Darkwing Duck #9 (still haven't had a chance to read it) -- I did read the back of issue hoping to see any hint of Gargoyles, but alas yes, no word on that OR DuckTales (though it does plug Warren Spector's name interestingly enough).

Picked up Young Justice #1 too. Haven't gotten much into it yet, but I will say that it appears to take place
RIGHT AFTER the last scene of the two-parter premeire (after Miss Martian is introduced)
, though of course since I'm not finished I'm not sure what episode/scene will be bookmarking it.

Might do another review of Young Justice #1 when I finish reading it if I can find the time :) . . .

Landon> I got it from a tweet that I can't seem to find anymore, which makes me just slightly suspicious of whether this news is legit. It probably is, since just about anyone who I'm following who would tweet or retweet that would know what they're talking about.

I'm guessing that Warren Spector got the writing job because of his work on Epic Mickey (which I just reviewed on my site) and he got that job because he's a titanic Disney nerd. So assuming this info is true, I think it will be a fun series.

While it's a little disappointing that the latest BOOM! Disney Afternoon title to be announced wasn't Gargoyles, it's not bad news. Like you said, it's not surprising when you consider that BOOM! was already doing DuckTales comics in Uncle Scrooge. And I wouldn't be surprised if they want to keep doing comics based on shows that are similar to what's already working for them, meaning TaleSpin could very well be the next book announced. But as long as BOOM! keeps putting out DA comics and they keep doing well, they're going to have the incentive to expand the lineup and Gargoyles remains a pretty good candidate.

Demonskrye - [<---"Epic Mickey" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

Wow, where'd you find that link? Not terribly surprising with the recent success of Uncle Scrooge, but good news in general. The most interesting fact is that it's written by Warren Spector, a genius computer games designer at Origin and Looking Glass in the 90s. I NEVER would have guessed he'd be writing DuckTales comics.
Landon Thomas - [<- Gargoyles News Twitter Feed]

And now BOOM! says DuckTales is going to be an ongoing series starting May:

http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=9d17c9217240226bbc79d6750&id=69f037daf4

Demonskrye - [<---"Epic Mickey" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

Just saw that Marvel is going to be publishing a magazine featuring Pixar characters starting this May:

http://pixarblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/marvel-disney-launching-pixar-story.html

Now before anyone starts freaking out and saying that BOOM! won't be allowed to publish Disney/Pixar comics any more and we should immediately toss all our eggs into Marvel's basket, let's look at what we know. Though the post is short, it repeatedly calls Disney-Pixar Presents a magazine. not a comic. Each issue is going to be 96 pages, much longer than a standard monthly comic. There are going to be stories, but there's no indication whether they're going to be comics or prose or a combination of the two. There will be puzzles and games in addition to the story content.

To me, this looks like the best way Disney and Marvel could think of for Marvel to do something with the Pixar brands. It may be the only thing Marvel can do with those properties right now if BOOM! still has the license to make Pixar comics. It might indicate that Marvel would be interested in doing their own Pixar comics when BOOM's license expires, but it's too early to say for certain and even if they did, it wouldn't necessarily mean they have any interest in the other licenses BOOM! currently has.

Just trying to keep things in perspective.

There were always some things that always intrigued me about Matt going from the FBI to the NYPD. I'm not sure if my thoughts will come in order, but here goes:

1) I always wondered if Matt was outright dismissed/fired from the FBI or if they let him resign to save face and possibly salvage his career in law enforcement. Hacker does say he was bounced from the bureau, but he didn't go into details.

2) I'm also curious why he never mentioned it to Elisa. He might have guilt/shame over a)The Illumanati getting the best of him and derailing not only his invesigation, but his career in the FBI or b) Perhaps a small part of him thought that maybe he really was too obsessed and it was his fault that he was fired. In any event, it was probably a bitter experience. Just my experience, but when ever someone feels like they were unjustly let go, they tell the whole world. But then you meet some people like Demona who will re-write history and make it seem like they were the most indispensible worker ever when it was quite the contrary. I've noticed that it's the people who know that they messed up who tend to be tight lipped on why they were let go.

3) In any event, he's is obviously not reticent about sharing his theories with other police officers, especially those who have just been partnered up with him.

So how confident was Matt Bluestone in himself that he really wasn't tilting at windmills?

Richard Jackson - [rickymtj@yahoo.com]

Matt's interest in the Illumintati did get him fired from the FBI. Whether that was because it got in the way of his job or whether it was because Martin Hacker was afraid he Knew Too Much, I'm not sure.
Paul - [nampahcfluap@yahoo.com]

Richard Jackson> I don't know that Matt is paranoid on the level of some of the people you mention. As you said, just about everything Matt has said about the Illuminati has turned out to be true. As the saying goes, it's not paranoia if they're really out to get you. Everything we know suggests that Matt is a good cop with an unusual side project/"hobby" that probably gets him teased a lot. He's not obsessed to the point where he can't do his job or relate to other people.

But I agree, it would have been nice to see a little evidence of his work on the Illuminati in his apartment.

Demonskrye - [<---"Epic Mickey" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

More of a comment, but if I had designed Matt's apartment, I would have made it look like The Question's apartment or John Forbes Nash's (Beautiful Mind) blackboard or tool shed or Mel Gibson's room in Conspiracy Theory or Glenn Beck's blackboard.

The only real paranoid thing I can see about Matt's apartment is that he has a key to open his patio door. ("Kingdom") Most apartments I've lived in have a lever lock or deadbolt to the patio.

Of course, it can be debated if Matt is paranoid. He probably isn't anymore since he was vindicated on a lot of his beliefs. I guess I should give Gargoyles credit for not making him a cliched dishelved nut. His apartment, when not being ransacked or blown up, actually looks quite neat. Of course, Woody Harrelson, the conspiracy theorist in 2012, was organized too....

Richard Jackson - [rickymtj@yahoo.com]

I'm working on an entry for Matt Bluestone's apartment for Garg Wiki. Just curious to see what everyone else thinks on a certain esoteric point:

According to the timeline, the bomb went off in Matt's apartment on October 27th. It seemed to create a lot of interior damage, but it didn't start a fire and it didn't seem to affect the apartments adjacent to it. Kind of like how the explosion at Art and Lois' didn't damage Sals' Food or Delicastesset.

On January 4th, a little over 2 months later, Broadway visits Matt at his apartment. The apartment looks fine, no bomb scars. Either Matt's apartment was repaired quickly or he moved to another apartment in the complex. Of course, repair crews could have worked like hell to fix the place up quickly. It's probably the same building at least since Broadway knew where to find him.

Does anyone have a comment?

Note: There's a similar painting in both episodes of the sea and the rocks by the sea. At least, they looked similar to me.

Sorry for the double post but I noticed this in the Ask Greg que and thought I'd save both Greg and the asker some time.

"Laura 'ad astra' Sack writes...

1- Last one first- I noticed in the credits that three characters had special creator credits- Batman, Miss Martian and Cheshire. Why do some characters have special credits? I get that some contracts might have been less 'work for hire' than others, but I can't imagine Kane (or his estate) having more control than Schuster & Segal did back in the day (or their estates now), especially considering that Superboy was not one of the specially credited characters, and IIRC Schuster and/or Segal's family actually won in court that they owned the character and he literally died in continuity until DC could sort that one out."

Thing is Laura, the Siegal/Shuster families only won the rights to the original "Superboy as a young Clark Kent" concept. That same case also ruled that Superman's clone Conner Kent/Superboy was different enough to be considered a completely unique and distinct character, which means DC owns him outright.

Basically we have two Superboys; the one created by Siegal and Schuster, whose ownership was in question. And the one created by Karl Kessel and Tom Grummet, whose 100% the legal property of DC comics.

I wonder if this is the first Disney Afternoon merchandise released since the shows ended, not including the DVDs. The past t-shirts and sculptures were presumably licensed out to separate companies, but Vinylmation is a Disney product. Of course, these TaleSpin characters are now part of a line of dozens or hundreds of previous Vinylmation figures released over the past 3 years. Antiyonder> To quote a reference source, "Immoral is properly used to talk about the breaking of moral rules, amoral about people who have no moral code or about places or situations where moral considerations do not apply." By that argument, the example of Shere Khan's choice of action that Todd gave is indeed an amoral one. Ethics don't enter into it, just good business sense. As to whether or not Shere Khan is amoral as a whole, that's more open to interpretation, I think. However, I'd say as a high-level business type who doesn't fall into, as Xanatos himself puts it, cliched villainy (looking at you, Luthor), Khan probably has to operate from a fairly amoral point of view on a regular basis. It's all about the bottom line, after all.

Xanatos is among the favorite characters of Gargoyles. One thing that makes him unique compared to most villains is that he is ammoral. Not evil for the sake of being evil, but doesn't do good unless it benefits him.

Would Shere Khan as depicted in Tale Spin also count ammoral? I mean he doesn't constantly plot evil schemes, but will engage in questionable activities for profit. When he does something good, it's pretty much to repay any favors or to butter someone up.

Now I don't profess to full understandment of ammoral, but he does seem to at least come close.

Algernon's comment about Norman Osborn: One of the neat things about Dark Reign is that it gives Osborn the chance to expand his horizons beyond tormenting a twenty nine year old who still lives with his mom.

KingCobra> I probably wouldn't have bothered myself if I didn't get the chance to use a callback for a some amusing self-mockery. Yes, the use of tenth rather than ten in Spanish was quite deliberate.

Alguien se ha olvidado de mi advertencia acerca de la tilde (y los acentos, al parecer).
