I have read the discussion about the origin of Gargoyles again. It was here: http://s8.org/gargoyles/comment/archive/index.php?archive_date=2011-10-16

I still think that Gargoyles come from Therapsids, it makes much sense.
Something that is also interesting is the fact that nearly at the same time some small lizards evolved wings from their spines to glide - wings that are NOT their arms - but separate "limbs".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuehneosaurus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarosaurus

I don't think they have anything to do with Gargoyles, BUT they show that such an evolution can happen definitely.
The wings of the Gargoyles are of course much more evolved than these primitive gliding aids.

There's an animal living today that uses this technique - the "flying dragon".

and about this book I asked for... too bad there's not more info. I think it would be a rather bad book with huge facepalm-qualities, but it would be so cool to have a look inside ^^ Maybe some fans could write it, just for fun? :D

Thanks for the shout-out, Greg. I'm flattered to have written a fanfic with such staying power. Although I understand there might be a formatting issue. If there is, you can also read it on fanfiction.net:

I'll do what I can to try and fix it on the Gargoyles fan website, though I've tried reloading it before and the formatting issue still seems to exist.

If I recall his answer to one of my questions correctly, Formspring!Lex has got quite a collection of systems - up to and including the current Big Three - but his favorite remains the classic NES.

In any event, he's far more affable a respondent than the newly minted Formspring!Miles Warren, who's been nothing but a jack
al
ass to me. :P

VINNE> Indeed, and even the most tyrannical ruler only has finite resources to impose his will on the populous. Nero's very dim view of Christians didn't stop Roman citizens from converting to the new faith.

And of course, the opinion of the ruler himself often changed depending on who was sitting in the big chair at the time. Does anyone really think Augustus, Nero, Caligula and Constantine(The Roman Emperor, not the Scottish King) would all be uniform in their opinions on gargoyles, or anything else for that matter?

I've been discussing the multitude of "already-asked-and-answered" questions about "Young Justice" at "Ask Greg" with Greg Weisman, and suggested as a possible solution that we set up a FAQ page for "Young Justice" that would group all the frequently-asked information, divided into different sections for each major character and group (Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, Artemis, the various super-heroes in the Justice League, the Light, etc.), so that that information would be easier to find. (Currently, all the "Young Justice" answers are in a single sub-archive, which makes locating a single answer more difficult.) Greg thought it was a good idea, but said that he didn't have time to put it together. But he suggested that somebody else could try setting it up from the already-answered questions (he suggested Masterdramon, who's already volunteered to help out with the "Young Justice" questions at "Ask Greg").

Is anybody here interested in setting this up?

Todd Jensen

If you disobeyed a ruler in ancient times that would be a good way to lose your head but that doesn't mean you have to privately agree said ruler. A ruler can't control what a person thinks. He can't stop his people from grumbling.

I didn't say anything about Amadeus being historically accurate (it isn't TOTALLY innaccurate), I was making a general comparison. If a leader liked something, his subjects would too.

And before anyone says anything, yes, I am aware that Marie Antoinette probably never said "let them eat cake" but it doesn't mater, because the ruling class and the people most certainly did not see eye to eye in France at the time.

BATTLE BEAST> "Amadeus" is a wonderful movie. I love it, but it's about as historically accurate as the Scottish Play.

You know what, I concede... you're right....

... I mean, isn't it terrific that President Obama is the most beloved and influential man in the entire country. Because, god damned, it would be awkward for him if a ton of people hated him, compared him to King George and dressed up in colonial costumes to protest him...

... Just as it would be awkward if a lot of people started camping out and protesting in Wall Street against this country's ruling class.

And just as it would have been awkward if the French didn't all go out and eat cake when Marie Antoinette said they should. I mean, it's not like she and her family got beheaded...

Battle Beast> Except it wasn't that simple. The Emperor (Joseph II) also owned the operahouse where the Marriage of Figaro was played. He personally thought it was too long. There's no evidence he yawned (outside the movie Amadeus), but there is evidence that the opera was popular at the time despite its low number of performances.
Supermorff

I tend to agree... if the ruling class was ok with it, most of the citizens would be, too. The Emperor came to see Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, yawned twice, and the Opera flopped. it was that simple. The ruling class had a ton of influence, no matter what the era.

I'm sure if Agustus favored them, most citizens would have been cool with gargoyles. Of course we'll never know exactly how each person felt...

Adam> You're assuming a lot about the other residents of Wyvern after the sacking. The only people who followed Katharine for whom we see their attitudes over time concerning the gargoyles numbered three - a mother whose child (as well as herself) was saved by gargoyles, a young boy who was already intrigued by them, and a wizard who had to deal with the guilt of wrongly cursing the clan. That's not exactly a highly representative sample. And honestly, the idea that people think the same way their leaders do, even in an age with rulers "by divine right" as they liked to put it, is quite inaccurate.

Besides, even if everyone who was at Wyvern that survived the sacking did agree that gargoyles weren't all that bad, that doesn't change the fact that Constantine did not feel that way and once he usurped the throne, he "outranked" Katharine. Obviously, there were dissenting opinions among the ruling class in Scotland, and that's a relatively small nation. If that group couldn't have a unified position, what makes you think ones as large as the Persian, Byzantine, or Holy Roman Empires could?

Brainiac - [OSUBrainiac at gmail dot com]
There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

I would think that a lot of peoples feelings on Gargoyles would have to do with how the ruling class felt about Gargoyles. Look at Wyvern. Before the massacre, Katherine had great disdain for the clan, and the people seemed to share those feelings. But after the vikings sacked the castle and remaining clan saved them, Katherine relized she was wrong about the gargoyles and the rest of the people went along with her.

ADAM> The thing is, as we've seen in previous Ask Greg responses, Greg usually doesn't give monolithic answers like that.

Again, you're not a newbie. To make it clear, if you ask why the Quarrymen hate the gargoyles, that's too broad, and the reasons aren't monolithic.

John Castaway's answer is different than Banquo and Fleance's and theirs are different than Sarah Browne's and her's is different than Lou and Chaz....

Do you understand? You're essentially asking for sweeping generalizations.

Elisa Maza, why don't you just take that "sodie pop" can and stick the straw right into New York's eye!

Just to be a a** hole, I looked up ancient history. It is discribed as the begining of recorded human history to the early middle ages, which last from 500 to 1000 AD. The Roman empire then split in 395 AD, which technically make the early Byzantine Empire ancient. Like I said, just to be an a**.

Any way, the only reason I wanted to ask the question is because I was watching some movies that feature the Picts and doing some research on some civilizations that I am not familiar with. I look over, and there sits one of my copies of CB2, and I thought to myself, how would these people interact with Gargoyles. So I decided to come hear and take a change and see if Greg would answer.

Adam - [carl006_1999@yahoo.com]

Maybe Adam confused it with the original Roman Empire, which *was* ancient history. On the other hand, some people do use "ancient history" loosely. I've been subscribing to a series of DVDs called "Ancient Civilizations" for almost two years, and while most of them are about what we'd consider ancient history, there are a few medieval-themed ones (one was on the Crusades, and another on the Holy Grail).

I was rereading T. H. White's "The Sword in the Stone" today, and in the scene where the young Arthur pulls the sword out, he looks all about the churchyard, seeing his surroundings with new eyes and awed by them. Among other things, he says, "Look at the beautiful gargoyles of this church, and of the monastery which it belongs to." Architectural gargoyles, of course, rather than the living kind, but still, it's a pro-gargoyle sentiment from Arthur (and Greg Weisman's read T. H. White - and even included him among his favorite Arthurian writers).

Todd Jensen

Some people consider the moon landing or disco or the cold war or "Friends" to be ancient...

Can the Holy Roman Empire, a collection of German states, really be considered ancient? It existed from the 10th to the 19th century.

ADAM> <<Questiion 2: I wasn't looking for specific information about individual clans, just a general adittude from these human groups toward gargoyles.>>

I'm sorry, but how long have you been here, Adam? Since 2006? Five years now. Doesn't that type of answer seem to want seem a little (or a lot) monolithic compared to the types of answers he normally gives?

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
Elisa Maza, why don't you just take that "sodie pop" can and stick the straw right into New York's eye!

@Adam - To echo what Phoenician said you'll probably get a "spoiler request, no comment". The ancient groups might come into play during the "Time Dancer" story and Greg probably doesn't want to spoil any of that just in case.
Anthony Tini

Phoenician- Technically we have seen six beasts, if you count the one from Ishimura. But I think I need to refrase my questions. Got answers (which I always appriciate), just ones that I was not looking for. Let me try this again.

Question 1: I think I have to retract this one. As mentioned above, the red male gargoyle beast from Ishimura seems to have traits common with Chaw and Boudicca (long snout, slimmer, and long tail).

Questiion 2: I wasn't looking for specific information about individual clans, just a general adittude from these human groups toward gargoyles.

I hope this helps.

Adam: Not sure if you forgot about him (considering the focus seems to be with the Wyvern Clan beasts), but we have seen five gargoyle beasts in the stories, the fifth being Fu-Dog.

As for the second question, I don't think Greg Weisman has revealed anything outside the possible/likely existences of gargoyle clans in areas like Camelot, Ireland, Norway, Persia, the Middle East, and scattered across the Mediterranean.

I also definitely agree with GregXB -- Frankly, any details about those possible clans or their potential interactions with the local humans is not likely to be answered outside the context of a story and will probably get a SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT response until then.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
Elisa Maza, why don't you just take that "sodie pop" can and stick the straw right into New York's eye!

I wanted to ask Greg a couple of question, but I thougtht that I would ask them here first since "ask a question" is done and couldn't find it in the archives.

Question 1: Of the four gargoyle beasts that we have seen, all originating from the Wyvern clan, both males had short tails and the females had long tails. I am wondering if that is a family trait or something that is common among Scottish beasts.

Question 2: I am wondering what Gargoyle relations with varies acient groups like the Persians, Celts, Byzantines, Holy Roman Empire, Picts, Druids, and Gauls.

Thanks.
