According to the "What Might Have Been" section of TV Tropes, Disney considered reviving "Gargoyles" in 2002. This is the first I heard about it. I wonder if anyone else knows about it.

(It also listed for "Gargoyles" a few "What Might Have Been" items we already knew about, such as the spin-offs, the original comedy proposal, Coco as a kind of female Broadway counterpart, and Demona's forerunner as Dakota.

As to Goliath personally, he saw the Gate in use in Vows as well as the Avalon triptych. He used it himself in MIA; even after having the experience of time being immutable from Vows, he STILL tried (and failed) to change history. I'd say he learned his lesson fairly well by that point. During the Avalon World Tour, Goliath was deliberately trying to make sure the Eye and the Gate were never used again - his attempt to "destroy" the Gate was basically the end result of that.

It is said that insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results. Goliath isn't crazy, nor are the clan. Considering the nature of those deliberately seeking the Gate (Demona, Xanatos, the Archmage, Puck), it makes sense that Goliath would prefer to keep it from being used more than attempt to use it again after all he's experienced with it.

Anyone else think that Goliath and co are really unambitious in regards to the Phoenix Gate? Goliath gets to see it in use once, by seeming coincidence the future isn't changed, and this is enough to make the entire Manhattan Clan write off potential use of the Phoenix Gate? Strange for such a normally tenacious bunch.

Well, the largest clan that we definitively know about is the London Clan circa 1996 and they probably went over the 200 mark when those eggs hatched in 1998. But of course, there is some serious nature and nurture reasons they are staying that size. They are keeping themselves small not only to manage resources, but to avoid splitting (where would the new clan go?).

I think Greg's estimate of 40-80 in tenth century Wyvern is a bit low. Bordering on impossible really, at least before they split. To produce 36 eggs in 988 takes 72 adults of breeding age. Plus you'd have two younger, non-breeding generations (the Trio's and True's), probably a few gargoyles of breeding age that didn't produce eggs and perhaps a few gargoyles older than breeding age. I'd guess before the split there were the 36 eggs and around 160 gargoyles/beasts. If half left (leaving the eggs) that'd leave around 80 gargoyles/beasts in residence by the time of the Massacre. So, Greg's maximum limit seems about as small as a splinter clan would really get under normal circumstances.

All that said, I think that most clans would hit the limit of resources/space way before hitting some sort of relational stranger limit. I can easily see clans growing to a few hundred strong, and maybe a thousand, if resources held. At that point, yeah I can see them splitting, if for no other reason than to spread out, but in the right circumstances, who knows. I would say that I don't think any current clan has many more members than the London Clan does. And I think in all of history clans of greater than 300 were very very rare if they existed at all. There are just too many reasons to split before getting that big. Space, resources, safety, politics.

Given Greg's mention of the rough average for clan size in the days of Wyvern (http://s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=9405), I'm curious if this would be valid for an "upper-limit" of clan size if societal structure is the ONLY determining factor in when splinters become necessary (in other words, no environmental bottlenecks like limited resources or locational issues).
