Comment Room : Gargoyles : Station Eight

Extreme terror comes to mind when I think of them. (Especially Twilight, it's terrible, but the fans are downright scary!)

And quite frankly...I am a big fan of nearly ALL things Disney Afternoon. Gargoyles is my fav, naturally. Darkwing Duck is my second fav--so naturally I was excited when DW came out--Now with Rescue Rangers, I'm pretty excited here too. Would I have preferred Gargs, naturally. But C&DRR isn't bad (although Talespin is my third fav, C&DRR would have been my fourth choice) Ducktales is last and I (SADLY) never watched Gummi Bears, so I have no opinion. If I got ALL of these titles in comic format...well, let's just say I'd be a very happy guy.

Also, who besides me watched the Animaniacs Tribute on Nostalgia Critic? (I know that there are several NC fans in here, I just want a head count) He mentioned that a Fan hooked him up with Tom Reugger and those folks, and it got me to thinking...with all of us here who've been to Gatherings and whatnot...we know several of the folks who created Gargoyles (Naturally, what with ask greg and all) So, it got me thinking...what if Nostalgia Critic did a...Gargoyles Tribute? If we could talk NC into it, and see if Greg and some of the other creators of the show and/or comic artists (Like Karine) to interview with NC...that could be really cool. I wanted to bounce the idea off the heads of some of the folks here (and you know, people who theoretically could get in touch with GW and co) any thoughts?

I'm not sure if the intended message of locking the thread was "We hear you; stop bugging us." The former is definitely true, but the latter might not be the case. I think the reason the thread got locked was because it seemed to be changing in focus from people saying that they wanted a Gargoyles comic to people who had already expressed their desire for a comic having a more general discussion about where the SLG comics left off and what might happen in a potential new comic. The forum mods felt that this was conversation more appropriate for a Gargoyles discussion forum and I can't say I totally disagree. So the thread was locked.

By the way, I think this is another reason the TaleSpin thread hasn't been locked yet. In addition to having no new posts in over a week, it never veered off the original topic of whether people would like to see a TaleSpin comic.

We can still contact BOOM via their website or Twitter and I don't think that can hurt. It is possible to make pests of ourselves, but more fans saying that they want a comic doesn't count as pestering as far as I'm concerned. Asking every day or every week when a Gargoyles comic is coming, responding to every announcement of a new BOOM title with "But what about Gargoyles?" or getting hostile would be annoying and detrimental to our cause. But if you haven't already told BOOM that you want them to publish a Gargoyles comic, go ahead.

I also don't think we should be wringing our hands over the possibility of another Disney Afternoon comic coming out before Gargoyles and killing the line. If TaleSpin ends up being the next BOOM DA title, I'm not worried. The show does still have a devoted fan following, as well as a few recognizable Disney characters who might lure some more casual readers into picking it up. Heck, I wouldn't have guessed that a Darkwing Duck comic would have been as success, so anything's possible. Additionally, I think the staff at BOOM is pretty smart and would at least recognize that Gargoyles is a very different animal from most other Disney Afternoon titles. Being from the DA lineup is what's getting our foot in the door - the first time in a long time that the show's association with that programming block has been important, but it's not its biggest selling point. If BOOM doesn't want to oversaturate the market with too many really similar DA titles, Gargoyles is a way to keep the line going without being repetitive. My hope is that, if a future DA comic should fail, BOOM's editors will not conclude that the public is tired of anything to do with the Disney Afternoon and shut the whole thing down. With any luck, Gargoyles will be evaluated on its own merits and given a fair shot based on whether BOOM thinks it can make money, not whether the whole Disney Afternoon lineup is a success.

But, if I were a gambling man, I'd say there is a good chance they're going to announce a comic sometime in the next year. If two more are published, they'll most likely be "TaleSpin" and "Gargoyles" in either order... but that's just my hypothesis.

Ultimately, BOOM! has to do whatever is best for BOOM!, and if BOOM! determines that publishing a Gargoyles comic is not in their best interests, then that is their choice. I just want to know whether they know how big of a seller this could be. If they fully understand that a Gargoyles book would likely make them a very respectable profit and they ultimately choose not to publish it, well, so be it. But I don't want for them to choose not to publish it because they don't think they're going to make money off of it--because that is simply not true. When you look at the sales for the SLG Gargoyles issues, and you see that they were a rather strong seller, and when you consider that they were still a strong seller DESPITE the delays and despite coming from a small publisher, it's clear that they would sell even better if coming from a publisher with more visibility and who puts books out on time.

I've been buying some BOOM! books for a while now. I've purchased individual issues of every single Farscape comic they've released. It's so great to be getting more Farscape stories! And I must say, their Farscape comics impress me. They come out on time and the art generally looks very good. That's why the possibility of Gargoyles finding a home with BOOM! has got me so jazzed--I wouldn't feel this way if I didn't think BOOM! was a first rate publisher. If Gargoyles finds a new publisher, I want it to be with a company like BOOM!.

I decided to pick up an issue of the Darkwing Duck comic recently. I didn't read it yet because it's #3 and I want to read #1 and #2 first (my local comic store is supposed to be getting them for me). But I did flip through it and I was struck by how the art resembles the show so closely. THAT is the kind of treatment I'd love to see for Gargoyles! I was never a HUGE fan of Darkwing Duck as a kid--I liked it, but mostly I just watched it because it was there to watch. But I figured I'd check the book out anyway. If BOOM! might be considering publishing a Gargoyles book, I don't mind throwing a little extra business their way, especially if it's a book I might end up liking a lot.

Rebel - I agree with all that (except that I think TaleSpin could sell very well as a comic). But BOOM! has pretty much stated, "We hear you; stop bugging us." I think we need to be careful from now about how we promote Gargoyles. Apply the wrong pressure or be repetitive, and we could annoy and hurt our chances more than help. Maybe we should talk to them directly one-on-one at cons from now on, while noting how much we enjoy their existing BOOM! products?

But if they don't, and choose to go with "Talespin" first, that could spoil our chances if the "Talespin" book doesn't perform well.

I don't think this really means anything one way or the other. BOOM is obviously aware of the fandom and the demand for a Gargoyles comic, which is terrific. "No comment" is a pretty common response from companies that doesn't mean anything one way or the other. It doesn't help BOOM any to announce what's going on if they don't have a deal completely cemented. If they say they're interested or working on an agreement with Disney and it falls through, they've got nothing but fan disappointment and irritation. And they're far better off keeping the possibility of a future comic open rather than saying that they aren't going to publish one. I don't think there was anything malicious about locking the thread. Looking over it briefly, it seems like the content had gone from new people saying that they wanted a Gargoyles comic from BOOM to discussion of the current storyline and where it might go. As the post states, BOOM's forum moderators want to keep the forum focused on discussing BOOM and the comics they are currently publishing. The thread was moving away from that, so it was locked. As I see it, it doesn't mean that a new comic's on the way or that BOOM doesn't like Gargoyles. All we know now is that they're aware of us and they know that we want a new comic.

If I remember right, the comics didn't exist when Amazon put those pages up.

We don't have any data on the sales of the DVDs, beyond what's publicly available on Amazon and what Greg Weisman has told us, which isn't a lot. What we know is that the Season One DVD sold well enough to merit another DVD release, but not amazingly well. Season Two Part One sold fewer copies than Season One and fewer copies than Disney was expecting it to, which is why we don't have a second half of Season Two on DVD. The number on the comics are a little easier to track, since Diamond is pretty much the only comics distributor in the U.S. and they publish the sales figures for their top 300 or so comics regularly.

I've said it before and I may well say it again: actually knowing information like how well the DVDs sold or what Disney's sales target was is not going to help us much at this point. It's not like there's still a finish line out there and if we can just cross it, Disney will give us the rest of Season Two on DVD. The race ended a long time ago. Disney expected the second DVD set to sell a certain number of copies in a certain amount of time and that didn't happen. It's been almost five years since the last DVD set came out. The original sales goal is pretty much irrelevant. At this point, there would have to be a massive upswing in the sales of the DVDs to make Disney reconsider releasing the rest of Season Two.

All of this may sound pessimistic, but I actually believe we have a decent shot at getting Disney to pay attention to Gargoyles again. More sales of the DVDs will always be a positive, but I think it's going to be kind of tough to create a big surge of interest in a product that's been available for five years. We do have two things going for us right now. The announcement of Disney's "untitled gargoyle movie" has inadvertently given Gargoyles some free publicity which the Facebook group has been able to take advantage of. The success of BOOM's Darkwing Duck comic has opened the door for more Disney Afternoon titles and BOOM is at least aware of Gargoyles. If a new comic happens and sells really well, or if Disney gets a lot of mail asking that the new movie be based on Gargoyles instead of reinventing the concept, Disney might see Gargoyles as a potential profit maker again, which could lead to Season Two Part Two coming out on DVD. But chasing after Disney's old sales targets is a non-starter.

We don't know for certain that the Tasmanian Tiger will join the Pack, but he seems like a pretty good candidate.He's a canine-themed villain like the other members of the Pack. And the Pack is low on manpower since Dingo left. It's just a guess now, but the Tasmanian Tiger does seem to be a natural choice for the Pack's new recruit.

Going back to last week for a minute...

Years ago, someone wrote in to Ask Greg wondering why DIsney couldn't just release the rest of Gargoyles on DVD, adding that Disney already has so much money that surely they could do this one project just to be nice. (I tried every way I could think of to search for this question, but I can't find it. Maybe it was slightly different than I remember. Maybe the person was saying that Disney should release DVDs before DIsney released the first two sets, or that they should make videos available again, or make new episodes of the show again.) And Greg Weisman, who probably has more desire than any of us to see more Gargoyles product of any kind, said that he didn't want that. I'm sure he wants the rest of the series on DVD as much as anyone. What he didn't want, as a Disney stockholder and sometimes employee, was for the company to throw money at a project they believed would break even at best, lose money at worst. It might seem like just one time couldn't hurt, but it sets a precedent, and then where do you draw the line? If Disney puts out the rest of Gargoyles just to be nice, why aren't fans of every other Disney property that hasn't had a DVD release entitled to the same treatment?

The reason I'm pointing this out is that it doesn't help anyone to have unrealistic expectations of what Disney should be doing. We can talk all day about how nice it would be if Disney just decided to do fans a favor and release the last half of Season Two. But complaining that Disney is putting profits first or feeling like the company owes us something just because we're fans is a waste of time. The facts are that Disney release two Gargoyles DVDs, the second sold below expectations and below the sales of the first, and now Disney doesn't see the property as a good investment. Call it greed if you want, but Disney has an obligation to its shareholders and employees to invest it's money in projects it believes will turn a profit. People do make their living and support their families by producing DVDs. If any of use were asked to do whatever it is we do at cost or for free just once because it would be a nice thing to do, I think we would all at least give some serious thought to the potential benefits and drawbacks.

Regarding the Tazmanian Tiger, I think he's an obvious tribute to goofy Silver Age DC villains like Catman and Captain Boomerang. That said, he did manage to slice through Dingo's Matrix armor, so perhaps he's more dangerous then he looks.

I remember Greg once saying that the Pack's upgrades were intended to reflect their personalities to a certain extent...

Given all that, I'd say the nature of TT's upgrade would depend on whether he'd have a problem with Coyote and/or Sevarious mucking around with his insides. I tend to agree with Masterdramon and Todd that he'll probably rely more on his "attack dogs" then anything else, me thinks Benjamin and Natasha are in for some upgrades of their own.

Again guys:-); I hope to do not be too annoying, but one minute before I saw in Amazon the title Gargoyles season 2 volume 2 and season 3:'sign up to receive news about them'
So, the sales are increasing, right? we will see at last the rest of the DVDs? if will happen I very hope Disney decides to release them in the other countries, even in Italy my country.
Well I hope someone answer this question, the question about Tazmanian Tiger and my english it is understandable.

Hey guys I've read what happend to the show presented by Marina Sirtis and Jhonnathan Frakes; I red two minutes before in Gargwikipedia the new villain named Tazmania Tiger.
From his look he looks like a 'clown'.
Will he be useful for the group of the Pack?(I know it is a stupid question, it is my curiosity)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pack (or Ultra-Pack) might see the thylacines (assuming that the Tazmanian Tiger is indeed going to be the new member - which certainly seems probable) as something to use against Bronx and Fu-Dog. (I still suspect that the Pack's first response to encountering Fu-Dog in the Times Square battle must have been "Where'd those guys get a pet lion?")

From what I've seen, the panel looks like it was wonderful. Wonder if any of the voice actors mentioned the DVDs or comics to the crowd at some point?

Antiyonder: Each of the Pack members upgraded themselves the first time 'round roughly based on their own personal affinities and fighting styles. Wolf focused on overwhelming brute strength, so he simply had his physical attributes boosted to the n-th degree. Jackal and Hyena were weapons users, but their weapons tended to be the kinds that fit onto and augmented their own bodies (note the nigh-lustful expression Hyena affords to the gauntlet that Coyote 1.0 gives her)...so they just went ahead and stuck as many such weapons as possible onto and into themselves, sacrificing aesthetics for efficiency. And while Dingo was also a weapons user, he wore no armaments or melee weapons, preferring ranged ones such as boomerangs and bolos, making the completely removable armor the only possible choice for him.

So in order to determine what kind of upgrade the new member might wield, we should first extrapolate back from the style that their "non-upgraded" combat takes. If we assume (as I do) that the new member is the Tazmanian Tiger, then we first examine the techniques he used to battle Dingo/Matrix in Strangers:

- Large blaster weapon
- Clawed gloves, at least strong enough to tear through Matrix's nanites
- Trained attack thylacines, Benjamin and Natasha

The last one, I think, is the key point. If we allocate the Pack to traditional RPG-esque archetypes, the Tazmanian Tiger falls well into the "Beast-Master" role; he appears to prefer to sit back and let his "watchdogs" take care of the enemy, though he's not afraid to get his hands dirty if the need arises.

Given these proclivities, the natural choice of upgrade would seem to be the same concept, but reproduced on a far more massive scale. Picture an army of dozens or even hundreds of Sevarius-cloned thylacines at the Tazmanian Tiger's beck-and-call; he might even use some kind of cybernetic implant to control them remotely, should Anton and Coyote's combined knowledge be sufficient to develop such a device.

[I do think that it's extremely likely that Sevarius will be contracted in by Coyote when he attempts to establish the Ultra-Pack; he's briefly mentioned as their ally in "Future Tense" and Wolf, Jackal, Hyena, and the Tazmanian Tiger all have personal experience with him. Plus, I highly doubt that his fragrant "freelancing" is anywhere near over at this point.]

The Pack or Ultra Pack becoming cannon fooder seem like a possibility in a far future. A mutant Wolf could easily be cloned over and over by future versions of the Coyote robot. The twins could naturally becomes pure robots that could be duplicated into multiple copies like the Steel Clan.

I'm thinking that the Pack member who's going to get the most drastic "upgrade" is Coyote itself. We know from Greg's planned Gargoyles 2198 spin-off that it will eventually evolve into "Coyote-X", a highly advanced and machiavellian A.I. bent on world domination. Plus there's also Coldsteel's comment about Coyote having "potential". Based on all that, I'm thinking Coyote 6.0 is going to become sentient and break away from Xanatos' control before founding the Ultra-Pack.

I basically see him becoming the Gargoyles Universe equivalent of Brainiac or Ultron, a living machine constantly rebuilding itself after every defeat.

As Algernon suggested, I'm going to repost an old question I brought up before, and posted on TZ and GameFAQs. Hopefully this time my question is well worded:

Among many planned tales, one idea Weisman has for Gargoyles is an Upgrade for The Pack, which will then become The Ultra-Pack (hinted to in Future Tense).

The team will consist of:
- Coyote 6.0 and shortly after lead by Coyote 7.0 (5.0 was recently seen in the Clan Building trades)
- Jackal
- Hyena
- Wolf
- A member yet to be identified (though this member may or may not have appeared in Gargoyles Bad Guys)

Now with Coyote we have a robotic member who simply is rebult with a bigger and stronger body. With Jackal and Hyena we have members who've had body parts replaced with machinery. With Wolf we have a member who underwent a genetic mutation to have the strengthen and capabilities of a wolf.

With former member Dingo, we had a member who donned a mechanical suit.

So what other types of upgrades could be implemented for this new unseen member? Best I can think of is going Multiple Man and giving this member the ability to make copies of himself/herself (not cloning, but just temporary doppelgangers).

But then, aside from possibiliy being too out there in terms of Gargoyles science, the only time something like this was close to being done was through cloning. Whereas the other upgrade options were established.

But again, mainly this refers to the new member, but could be applied to The Pack in general given that upgrades may or may not occur after The Ultra-Pack story.

But I tried. Any thoughts?

Hello! I've been absent for a while. Just here to say I was able to go to the Gargoyles panel at Dragon*Con. I did get some video, about half the panel. Will try to get some clips from it up some time this week. It was so much fun to go to, and we (a friend of mine was in charge of the panel, my long time friends, and me) were very pleased with the turnout. It was packed! And Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis were very appreciative of the panel. Fun all around.

Well I've see about my question about Demona I have to be more understandable and so: why Demona did form an alliance with Canmore the hunter? she did hate him and we know why. How was this alliance(I know it is a stupid question), Canmore know that Demona wanted ally with him or 'she did that without Canmore knew that?'
And an other question: I've heard Demona is 'similar to Lady Macbeth', I've see in 'Long way to morning' Demona incite Goliath to take the place of Hudson, did she want Goliath kill Hudson to take the place of the leader of the clan just like Macbeth in the Shakespeare opera(I know it is a stupid question and Goliath refused to do that Demona said to him)?

BRAINIAC - Good question. Greg once said that one of them went to the Gathering and the other didn't, but didn't say which. And their descriptions make it trickier.

We know (though it's still only canon-in-training) that Morgana le Fay in the Gargoyles Universe is really one of the Third Race, but raised by humans, while Nimue, a human, was exchanged for her and (apparently) raised on Avalon. So which one would be subject to the Gathering? We don't know whether Oberon gave his consent to the exchange or not (it might even have come before he took over from Mab, since the evidence suggests it took place somewhere during the Arthurian Age), so we don't know whether he'd consider the act of sending Morgana to a human family as placing her outside his jurisdiction or the act of taking Nimue to Avalon (or wherever she was raised) as placing her under his jurisdiction. Who would the summons apply more to? Someone Third Race by birth and blood, but raised among humans and identifying with them, or someone human by birth and blood, but raised as if one of the Third Race? It would certainly be a tricky question. Of course, Oberon would probably resolve it according to his mood at the time rather than poring over the legal niceties (I can't imagine him taking much interest in the latter, though Titania might).

Here's what I was wondering before the room rolled over. Greg's mentioned the Arthurian Survivors before and how he had plans for all of them. My question was whether or not any of those directly a part of or affiliated with the Third Race are exempt from the Gathering. I mean, Merlin's trapped (and not totally of the Third Race, like Alex and Fox), but what about Morgana, Nimue, and the Green Knight? The Green Knight's is likely on Avalon with the Lady of the Lake, after all, but Nimue and Morgana are a bit less certain.

Oh, and Happy Labor Day to everyone here in the US.
