Here are some more guesses. I hope you don't mind me posting several Antarctica guesses at once, for the sake of saving space in the archive. Hm, I wonder if you'll give each one half a point. Btw, if someone names an entire continent (such as Africa), and let's say for the sake of this argument that there was a clan there, would you give zero points because it was too broad an answer, or would you still give it a fraction of a point? I guess what I'm asking is, how broad can you be before you stop awarding *any* points?

Castle Carbonek, Lemaire Channel (Antarctica), Zavodovski Island (Antarctica), Deception Island (Antarctica), Bouvetoya (Antarctica), Dry Valleys (Antarctica), Paradise Harbor (Antarctica), Iceland, Greenland, Manhattan, Avalon, Ishimura, New Olympus, Paris

Greg responds...

I'm only giving full points and half points. So if someone put North America, I guess I'd give it a half point for the Manhattan clan. The half point indicates the answer isn't all wrong, but that it's not right either. But that means that the United States would get the same half point that North America would get, that New York State would get that New York City would get. Only Manhattan would get the full point.

Five full points. Six half points.

What are the reactions and attitudes of other gargoyle clans around the world, at least london, guatemala and japan, towards the manhattan clan after the events of "hunter's moon" and "the journey" for blowing their cover? Like, now the world at large knows gargoyles exist again and probalby trying to hunt them.

Greg responds...

Hey Greg, I just got the score from my first 14 clans guess - I've learned so much since then. But, it did still help me eliminate a couple things, so I guess that means it's time for another guess. Here's number five...

1 - London, England
2 - Ishimura, Japan
3 - Guatemala
4 - Antarctica
5 - Xanadu, China
6 - New Olympus
7 - Loch Ness, Scotland
8 - Avalon
9 - Manhattan, NY, USA
10 - Labyrinth, NY, USA
11 - Tintagel
12 - Wyvern, Scotland
13 - Paris, France
14 - Babylon

I still have a couple to narrow down, but this should help me confirm what I think I know. Or don't know as the case may be. TTFN!!

Aloha Greg!

After all this time, I fugured I wanted to take a stab at the locations of the living clans contest. Here goes:

1. Disneyland (last I checked, they still had some Gargs)
2. Walt Disney World, Orlando (them, too)
3. Walt Disney Studios, Japan (heehee...)
4. The Disney Store (I'll lump all stores into one; they have occasional Garg goodies)
5. The Disney Archives (where they will be hidden away until the world is ready for them once more... ;)
6. The local video place (may there someday be a clan DVD)
7. My Video Library (self-explanitory)
8. "Your" Video Library ("your" meaning any collection that isn't mine)
9. Various Animators' Portfolios (trust me, I've looked!) ;)
10. Atop the desks, monitors, shelves, etc. of fans around the world (I am guilty as charged, my apartment is heavily Gargoyle-fortified)
11. The toy/comic/hobby store (although I've heard this variety or garg is becoming quite rare...)
12. eBay (you wouldn't believe some of the Gargs you come across there!)
11. The Internet (although those of clan Microsoft prove to be quite finicky at times)
14. In the hearts and minds of the former Garg staffers (I'd break into a chorus of "Remember Me This Way," but I'm afraid my singing is worse tham my attempts at humor...)

I'll also enter a little disclaimer: Given that I know a member of the Gargs staff (Roy Sato is my boyfriend), I think my entry would have to be disqualified, anyway, even if it was serious. ;)

Anyway, Greg, I just wanted to send you a little note to mention how awesome I think Gargoyles was. You and the Garg team brough a really terrific and unique show to the air. Sometimes I get to hear behind-the-scenes stories from the animation side of production; it's really cool to get the scoop from your camp, too! I'm not sure how many folks from the staff you still keep in touch with, but you all definitely deserve a huge "YOKU DEKIMASHITA!" (GREAT JOB!) Thanks again!

~M

Greg responds...

Thank you.

(Uh, by the way, you officially scored ZERO. But hey, tyca, anyway, I don't mind if either you or Roy win the contest. Given the nature of it, i.e. everyone trying to guess what I've made up in my own personal brain, it doesn't seem to me like you've got an unfair advantage.)

I do hope to meet the two of you someday. I'm hoping that one of these years you guys might make it out to a Gathering.

I wondered about how the mating of english gargoyles genetically works.

1. If a lion-type gargoyle mates with a griffon-type gargoyle, could their son or daughter be a unicorn-type gargoyle?

2. Or asked in another way: Have some griffon-type gargoyles also the genetically code for unicorn-type and lion-type gargoyles in their heritages and could give them to their descendants? (And lion-type gargs the ones of unicorn- and griffon-typed gargs, and so on.)

3. Is it right to think, that all genes, that make a lion-type gargolye to a lion-type gargoyle and a griffon-type gargoyle to a griffon-type gargoyle are coupled to each other, so that it can´t happen that for example a gargoyle hatches, that looks half like a lion and half like a griffon and a bit like an unicorn?

Greg responds...

1. Not likely, unless there's a recessive gene in their from some other ancestor.

2. See above.

2. Did you have any other plans for the Guatemalan gargs? I'd love to see Zafiro and gang again.

Greg responds...

1. Yes. For starters they needed to recover the Sun Amulet.

2. Yes. In particular, a descendant of Zafiro's (also named Zafiro because of the Sapphire pendant he wears) is likely to be a major character in my revamping of GARGOYLES 2158.

Is Una in that cycle as well? I like the London gargs as much as that person Pamber likes the Guatemalan ones, so I'm very interested in their fates.

Greg responds...

All gargoyles are on the same cycle. So Una is likely to lay an egg in 2008, assuming she isn't too old. (I haven't given specific thought to her age. But we know she was fairly young in 1940.)

The more gargs live with and interact with humans, the more likely they are to have names. Thanks to their Soho store, the London clan has been interacting with humans for centuries.

Having looked through the clan guessing contest, (my next post will be guessing), I realize the clones are one of the clans. [You explicitly gave .5 saying that a location was necessary as well] The thing I do not understand is how. They have one female, and even if they had a female for each male that would not be enough. The only way they could go on to 2158 would be with outside blood. Is that what happened? If so did that come from Goliath's clan? Other clans we have seen or heard of? Which? Combinations?

I have just posted a bunch of stored up questions (10 or so), I have more waiting, but I'll let them wait a bit longer (except the clan contest:), but I do want to take the opportunity to thank you again for reading and answering our questions, and, just as importantly, for creating a story that is so compelling as to grab and keep our interests as Gargoyles continues to do.

Clan Contest

As the person who (if I remember correctly) guessed enough to be surprising when first you alluded to this on the old Ask Greg [I was the first to bring up Griff's 'Scottish Stock' comment] I feel I must try- but as I look at the many previous attempts I doubt I can get it. I also have a sneaking suspicion some of your answers where different in different replies. Here goes:

The six we know:
-Manhattan (Goliath's)
-Avalon
-New Olympus
-London (or just outside, but owning the London shop)
-Ishimura
-Guatemala

Certain to develop-
-Clones- in Manhattan for lack of a better place. The Labrynth if you want more specificity.

Probably existing already-
-Lochness -Griff's comment, Monsters' plot. And narrowed down from Lexy's multiples guesses

Probably revived in future-
-Wyvern Scotland

Now for intuitive guesses-
-Paris- guess
-China [sometimes seems in either or choice with Paris, sometimes not] probably .5, it is a big country. Since the Yetis in that lost World Tour ep were not gargoyles I can't guess Himalayas, (or have to comment on China and Tibet), and nothing else in that part of the world has been hinted to.

-Camelot- know is .5 from Lexy's multiples. If you want ~less~ specificity I'd say another British clan, around that area- Wales? [I've no sense of Arthurian geography].

-Space station- future (I have a vague memory of it being mentioned)

-California- future (a post with it did well)

Ironically, Africa having large undeveloped regions make it a good candidate for gargoyles surviving, but it seems be discounted by process if elimination.

[I put in my reasons so that my most wild suppositions may seem at least partially logical]

Great work on Gargoyles, Mr. W!

With the Guatemalan gargs, the names Obsidiana and Turquesa are similar to the stones obsidian and turquoise. Jade is spelled like another stone, jade. On that sun amulet thing in "THE GREEN", some of the stones were black, green, and I think bluish, which are the same colors as obsidian, jade, and turquoise. I think there's another color also, but I'm not sure. My question is this: is the name Zafiro based on another type of stone?

My questions are on the London gargoyles.

1. Are Una and Griff mates? In "M.I.A.", Una seemed to be in love with him. If they ever were mates, will they ever have eggs of their own?

2. Do any London gargoyles appear in Gargoyles: 2185?

I liked those guys, and would like to see more of them.

Greg responds...

1. No. Griff disappeared before they could mate. Una eventually mated with Leo.

2. Eventually, I'm sure we'd meet some London Gargs in 2158. (Hell, who knows who would be in the cast by 2185?)

Tell me if I'm wrong, but in Castle Wyvern (994), were there only four generations in the Clan?
The oldest - Hudson
The middle - Goliath, Demona, Iago, Desdemona and Othello
The yougest - Brooklyn, Lexington and Broadway
The rookery - The eggs (Angela, Gabriel etc)
Of course there were other gargoyles in each generation but I don't know their names (none of them have any names anyway, except Goliath, in 994.)
But, anyway, were there any other generations in the clan like an older one or one in between the eggs and the Trio's generation.
Each generation should have a ten year age gap(biologically).
The Trio are 18 (biologically) in 994
Goliath is 28 (biologically) in 994
Hudson is around 50 (biologically) in 994
So shouldn't there be a generation between Goliath and Hudson, and a generation between Brooklyn and Gabriel?

You're wrong. I don't have my timeline with me, but there's AT LEAST two generations between Hudson and Goliath. (Hudson wasn't fifty in 994.)

Did she and Bronx mate? It seems logical, since (other than Fu-Dog) there are no other gargoyle beasts in the series. Is this true?

Sora is Yama's mate. And Boudicca has mated and probably will again mate with Bronx.

Eleven full points. Two half points.

Good score. I think it ties our best to date.

3 - Guatemala
4 - Loch Ness, Scotland
5 - Wyvern, Scotland
6 - New Olympus
7 - Tintagel

10 - Labyrinth, NY, USA
11 - Paris, France
12 - Victoria Land, Antarctica

I'm having so much fun with this contest. I've been keeping track of everyone's guesses, and with every new answer I learn (or confirm) something. I was overjoyed when you actually started giving scores. It has become much easier for me to add up the scores since you started telling us the number of half points recently, but it was actually more fun when an 8 might mean 8, or 7 and 2 halves, or 6 and 4 halves, etc. I appreciate all the hints, but please don't give too many more, or you'll be making it too easy for us!

TTFN!!

Greg responds...

11 full points. 1 half point. That's a damn good score. And, no, I'm gonna stick to this system now, but I'm gonna try NOT to give anymore EXTRA hints.

And frankly, as close as you guys are getting numerically, I still don't think anyone's ever going to solve this one.

Hello Greg:)

*checks out the latest Contest guesses* yup, just as I thought, I wouln't have said anything original;) But I _did_ happen to think up some more Q's at work. Exciting hey?

1) You said that there was a rather large gargoyle clan somewhere outside of London. That we just happened to only see Grif, Una, and Leo.
What is their purpose for staying at that store?

2) Do they keep in correspondence with the rest of the clan?

3) How often do they visit?

4) For question one. Was it the clans' idea for the shop or just Una, Grif, and Leo's?

5) When Grif vanshied with Goliath and was missing for all that time, did the clan try and search for him? Where they even informed? (duh but still)

6) Did Una and Leo continue to stay at that store in the hope that Grif would return someday? Or was it just some job that they were assigned and Grif or no they stayed??

7) About Grif and Una. I dont know if someone asked this or not before. I don't recall seeing it. So sorry in advance if this is old news:P But Una seemed to like him a lot. I guess I dont know if they were actually an item or not. Where they? Or was it just Una that felt that way? Or did I totally screw it up again like the whole Angela Gabe thing and she's alone or with Leo for crying out loud??

8) In the event that the answer was "Ya _duh_ they are an item. Haven't you been paying attention in here?". Then will the age differnce that they now have do any damage to the relationship?

Ok, thats enough on that topic. Thanks Greg!;)

Greg responds...

1. To earn money. To pay taxes on the land, etc.

2. Yes, constantly. By telephone and e-mail. Also it's not that far away, so I'm sure they glide out there all the time.

3. All the time.

4. The shop has been there for centuries.

5. Of course. You shouldn't look at this as if Leo & Una are some kind of separate entity from the rest of the clan. They're the breadwinners. (And no one said they're the only two who work at the store, they're simply the ones who do it most often.) They live at the estate most of the time, but when working late (or early at the store) have quarters upstairs where they can retire for a cup of tea or turn to stone or whatever.

6. The store belongs to the clan. I'm not saying they didn't occasionally wish that Griff would fly in a window one day, but basically they assumed that he and Goliath perished during the Battle of Britain.

7. No, you're right. Una was in love with Griff, and he cared for her. They weren't mates -- at least not yet -- but that's the direction they were heading. Now, of course, she and Leo are mates. But that partly resulted from shared grief over Griff's seeming death.

8. I think the fact that in the interum, she mated with Leo will have a larger effect than the age difference. That and the fact, that Griff is back off traveling the world with Arthur
