Why is Demona is always doing so poorly when she fights against Elisa?

I mean through her 1000 years of experiences in battle she should be a damned good warrior (considering that the Weird Sisters and the Archmage wanted her), so why has she lost against Elisa even in her gargoyle form(Avalon)?

Was it because she was ever such outraged that she became incautious? Or is Elisa truly the better fighter?

Greg responds...

I think that a few factors come into play.

I think that Demona is unaccustomed to fighting in human form, which is why she has difficulty in "High Noon".

I think on Avalon, she was under the Archmage's thrall, which dampened her own skills... as it dampened her free will.

And I think that Demona has an obvious rage problem, and since much of that rage is laser-focused on Elisa specifically, she often lets her anger get the better of her skills.

Also the battles have always been brief, with many distractions and third party interventions.

I think Elisa's pretty tough and savvy, but in any sustained conflict between the two, I'd absolutely put my money on Demona.

I was in your lovely resort twice, once in 1996 and once in 1997.

Back in 1996 I had the pleasure of visiting Pleasure Island and on the West End stage there was a group that was singing a song that was real good and I have heard it up here in (Maryland) in supermarkets and restaurants or a song of the same beat, I was hoping that if I supplied you with some of the words that I remember, you might be able to help me.

These are some of the words that I remember.

"We were much too young but we loved each other anyway , and the words  might be "Another day girl" or maybe "What a day or date girl" or "find away girl" and then"Here I am or yes I am".

Thanks for your help,

RWolman519@AOL.COM

Greg responds...

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about. My resort? I assume you're referring to Disneyworld in Florida from the Pleasure Island reference, but I'd hardly call that "My Resort". I don't even work for Disney anymore.

I am pleased to announce the release of "The Best of Dodger Thoughts," a
325-page book featuring the top selections from my brother's Dodger Thoughts website (www.dodgerthoughts.com). Since 2002, Dodger Thoughts has been the leading independent source online for information and insights on the Los Angeles
Dodgers. Now, the best pieces have been compiled in print, with sections on:

--Key Dodger players
--Dodger atmosphere: the stadium, the fans, the broadcasters
--Coaching and managing
--Ownership
--The GM's Office
--Baseball and writing

matt writes...

ok, i really had to research the archives to figure all this out, but that (and the long wait) will be worth it to satisfy my curiosity.

ok, heres some things you've said in the archives (correct any of these if i've gotten them wrong or they have changed):
-1 year in Avalon is 24 years in the real world, so 10 years on Avalon is 240 years in the real world.
-Gargoyle Beasts are mature by age 2 and can mate and lay an egg 10 years after they were hatched.
-besides Boudicca, there is another female and a male beast among the Avalon Clan and they are mates.
-the Avalon Clan hatched in 1078.

1. so, ten years after the Avalon Clan hatched (this would be the year 1318 in the real world) the gargoyle beast pair would have been old enough and in sync with the natural gargoyle cycle to mate and lay an egg, is that correct?

2. if an egg was laid in Avalon in 1318, then ten years later on Avalon in the year 1558 the egg would be in sync with the natural cycle and again and would hatch, is that correct?

3. then ten years later on Avalon, which would be 1798 the gargoyle pair would be in sync again to mate and lay an egg, is that correct?

4 so, just to be clear, when Goliath, Elisa and Bronx arrive on Avalon, not only should there be Boudicca, and the other two beasts, but there should also be the first now mature pup of the beast pair and their second egg, waiting to hatch in 2038. is that correct?

i know the math is kinda crazy, but the way i figured all this out was by saying 10 years on Avalon is 240 years in the real world and just adding from there so:

1078 real world- eggs hatch
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
1318 real world- gargoyle beasts mate and lay egg
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
1558 real world- egg hatches
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
1798 real world- beasts mate again
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
2038 real world- second egg hatches

is all this right? its entirely possible, despite my checking, that i could've goofed up somewhere, so please correct me if i'm wrong on anything.

thanks Greg!

Greg responds...

Ugh. God, you're really going to make me do the math, aren't you? Let's start by saying that I'm not confirming that any of this happened. I'm just striving to address your calculations.

1. The natural gargoyle cycle would dictate that an egg would not be layed until 1328. Eggs are layed on even decades. They hatch on odd decades.

2. An egg layed on Avalon in 1328 would hatch in 1578.

3. Moving forward, the next egg would be lain in in 1828.

4. That egg would be waiting to hatch in 2078. Nevertheless, by your calculations, when Goliath and Elisa first arrived on Avalon, there should indeed be a pup that hatched in 1578 and an egg that was laid in 1828.

Greg,
You have said that you thought of the Timedancer spinoff too late in the game to consider producing it, which brought this to my mind.
I'm trying to get a feel for how much of the Gargoyles storyline you already had thought out when you began producing the show vs. how much was you came up with as the series progressed.
When you producing the first episodes, did you have a lot of the specific details of the storyline, villains, or episodes already prepared in your mind (i.e. the World Tour, the existence of the Third Race, Angela choosing Broadway, Elisa and Goliath becoming romantically close, Demona's 1000 year history, etc.)?
Or was it more like you had some vague ideas for villains, and some general episode premises, but left the door open for creativity down the road?
Or did you just have a general idea of a groups of protagonist gargoyles who wake up 1000 years later in Manhattan, fight bad guys, and alter to the new world?
I'm just trying to get a feel for how much was thought out from the beginning and how much was created as the story developed. Thanks for your time.

Peace

Greg responds...

Really, I'm not trying to dodge the question, but the answer is "ALL OF THE ABOVE."

There were certain things I had a clear vision of in my head from day one. Other things came to us as we went, but we still had planned out way in advance of when we sat down to write the specific episodes. And still, we left ourselves open to new ideas and serendipity, etc.

In what epsiode did Coldstone first learn Hudson had taken a name? I ask this because at the beginning of the episode "Possessions" he called Hudson by name, and I don't remember any of the other episodes that Coldstone was in where he learned the other Gargoyles had a names, except of course Lexington.

Greg responds...

You know I'd have to go back through EVERY Coldstone ep to answer this question. But I'd lay odds that no mistake was made.

Either Coldstone heard Hudson's name, or perhaps the Coldstone your referring to was actually someone else (like Puck) posing as Coldstone. Or Coldstone got the info in his memory banks form Demona and/or Macbeth in "High Noon".

I can't remember. And certainly it's possible a mistake was made. But I doubt it.

Some more questions.

According to imdb.com "on October 28, 2002, Toon Disney aired the episode "Deadly Force," They zoomed in on Elisa's face instead of showing the blood by her body." I've yet to see this episode on Toon Disney so I can't say if it's true or not. If it is, were you aware of this change? If so, what brought it about? Will the DVD release of the series include the original unaltered version?

Not a point that would make me not buy the series on DVD but would be unfortunate just the same.

Greg responds...

The DVD includes the uncut version that I approved. This was not the same as the version that first aired, which had an unrealistic quantity of blood on the ground.

And again, I JUST answered this, which means that the same question was only a few questions ahead of yours in the queue. In the future, before posting, please check to confirm that your question hasn't already been asked.

Dear Mr.weisman,

My first question is why did you stop making the movies and the television show?what happened that made you stop? Was this the fault of Disney? Or the fault of someone else?
My second question is if you had the chance to make Gargoyles come to life again on television, would you do it?
I hope these questions are OK with you, I donot mean to pester you with all of these things, but they have been on my mind since I discovered that Gargoyles had been canceld. But if you do find the time to answer these questions, could you possibly email me at:dragonhunter2005@yahoo.com I would appreciate it if you would.if you do not wish to answer them that is fine with me as well. I thank you for your time in allowing me to ask these questions. If you do get the chance to put the show back on the air, I wish you good luck and good fortune. If disney or anyone else will allow it to be retelevised. Thank you very much.

Greg responds...

All of these questions have been answered in detail before. And it is against this site's policy to e-mail answers directly. If I did it for you, I'd have to do it for everyone. I looked into the FAQ as much as possible so as to avoid asking questions you've clearly asnwered before. That said, I have a few questions regarding the future release of season sets of Gargoyles on DVD:

1) Will Greg have any direct participation with the DVD release (perhaps record an audio commentary and/or participate in documentaries)?

2) The FAQ helped answer my questions about the sound mix and program length differences between the Heroes Awaken "movie" and 5-part story arc. But I would like to know the following:

a. Will both versions of Heroes Awaken be appear on the DVD (perhaps via seamless branching or on separate discs) or will the "movie" version not be included on the DVD set?

b. Which sound mix ("movie" or series) would be used if only the series version Heroes Awaken will be available on the set? Or would sound mix be created to mix and match the best elements of either sound mix?

3) Will the series be presented in its original 2.0 mix or a brand new 5.1 mix? If a 5.1 mix, will it simply be a remastered version of the old 2.0 mix upconverted to 5.1 or will brand new sound elements (gunfire, explosions, ambient sound, etc.) be used with the original dialog and music to create a 5.1 mix relatively from scratch?

Greg responds...

1. By now, I'm sure you know I was involved, both with the first season release and the quickly approaching Second season release.

2a. The movie version was not included.
2b. We of course used the episodic series sound mix with the episodes from the series on the DVD. The other version wouldn't have matched up.

3. I don't know what any of that stuff means.

Since this question concerns a project Greg worked on that was not Gargoyles, I apologize if I should not be asking it here.

Question time:
It was to my great delight that I saw Weiseman's name as one of the story-editors for the recent direct-to-video release of Bionicle: Mask of Light. I'm rather curious as to how you managed to find yourself in such a place. Since Disney indirectly supported the project, did 'they' point you in that direction? Or is there another reason?

Greg responds...

It had nothing to do with Disney.

I interviewed for the job -- an interview set up by my representation -- and I got it. I hit it off quite well with Bob Thompson, who is the Greg Weisman of the Bionicle Universe. I had a great time working with Bob and with writer Henry Gilroy.

Mab never appeared in an episode. Though given enough issues she will eventually appear in the GARGOYLES comic, which premieres in 2006.

Hey Greg, I wanted to say that I have always been a lover of the Gargoyles series, and I've seen some of the other stuff you've worked on....you know how to organize and put together scripts for a wide variety of genres....sci-fi, fantasy, action, etc. So, I was wondering, I can't recall whether you've worked on a live-action movie before, and was wondering if you could try to become a script writer/editor for the supposed upcoming Deus Ex movie, based on the PC game Deus Ex. This movie is supposed to be in the works soon and I was hoping you could get on the project and use your expertise, that shouldn't go to waste.

Greg responds...

It's very kind of you to think that way. But aside from the fact that here we are in late 2005 and I've still never heard of that project, I'm afraid the movie business doesn't work that way. I can't just become a writer on someone else's movie. It's not nearly that easy. Though I wish it was. Most people in live action are not interested in my skills BECAUSE of my animation credits. They assume that I'm not good enough for live action.

Hi Greg. I'm glad to hear that Gargoyles is *FINALLY* getting its well deserved release to DVD. I've enjoyed every episode ever since they first aired, and ever since I saw the 'final' episode, have desperately been wanting more. (kinda shocking to hear this from a 22 year old isn't it? ;)) I do have a couple of questions though.

1. Will the 'banned' episode "Deadly Force" be released in the season 1 boxset?
2. Will we get to see the entire episodes? (The series has been repeating on Toon Disney for some time now, but the horrible edit jobs are blatantly obvious. Its obvious that the episodes in their entirety aren't being shown.)
3. Will we get to see the episodes in widescreen? (I'm a big pusher for 16x9 only formats.)

I apologize if any of these have already been answered as I haven't had time to search the archives.

Greg responds...

Guys, guys, you have to look ahead at the questions already asked. I have RECENTLY answered this question multiple times. RECENTLY. Even a quick perusal would have revealed that you needn't have bothered typing this up.

And seriously, what's the point of apologizing for not taking the time to check ahead or check the archives. Instead, why not TAKE the time? Or if you don't have the time, then hold off asking your question until you can take the time -- saving everyone time. All you've really succeeded in doing is delayed new questions from getting answered, adding to the nearly two year delay that will likely prevent you from even seeing this response to your question. And, Chris, I don't mean to pick on you personally. But your post, nice as it was, is emblematic of why ASK GREG is so far behind and why the question-asking function is shut down now. I'm not absolving myself, but I'm also not getting much cooperation.

1. And so again, YES, it was.

2. Again, yes.

3. Again, the episodes were NEVER made for widescreen. So what would be the point in putting them in widescreen now? They were ALWAYS formatted for a standard television screen.

About the episode, "Deadly Force"...if I remember correctly, there was actually two verisons to it. The first time I saw the episode, it was a lot more intense with surprising amount of blood. But the next time I saw it again I was startled to see the subtle but noticeable changes in it....the blood are mostly removed, some animation (like Goliath's eyes...he blinked once in the first verison, but not the second verison) and even the positions Goliath and Brooklyn took up guarding outside Elisa's hospital room were changed (in the first verison, they took on more menacing poses as they turned into stone, but in second verison they merely crouched looking dull and unexciting.)

Sooooo....I'm really curious, what prompted the sudden changes, and why? I've been wondering about it ever since. (Personally, I thought the first verison was the best I ever seen.)

Thanks for your taking time to read this...

Greg responds...

The blood was not "mostly removed"... but the puddle of blood was changed after the first airing so that it didn't look (incorrectly) as if Elisa had bled out in the first few seconds after being shot.

There were, as you noted, other retakes (corrections) which were not ready in time for the first airing, but which were inserted before the second airing. Note: THIS is not the stuff of censorship AT ALL. This was the producers (Frank and myself) correcting errors. And stuff like this happened in nearly every episode, not just "Deadly Force".

What it does have in common is great dense stories, a pretty exciting arc, great writing and great voice performances... if I do say so myself. Hi Greg,

I recently wrote a Guide for the Gargoyle's video game (2 years ago when you get this). You can check it out here:
<http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/file/gargoyles.txt>

I summarized the story in the beginning of the guide and thought you might be curious about it. Basically the Vikings attack Castle Wyvern because the 'evil' Eye of Odin compels them to. Goliath defeats them and wakes up in the future only to find out that the Eye has teamed up with Demona (for some reason the Eye is a sentient, flying Eye... they don't say why).

Sorry for being long winded, here are my questions:
1.) Is there any talk within Disney about making a new 'Gargoyles' video game and/or have you tried to/been approached about convincing Disney to make one?

2.) Do you think that the video game format is a good way to tell the story of 'Gargoyles'? If yes what part of the 'Gargoyles' series would you like to make into a game?

Gargoyles is a great show and thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

Greg responds...

1. No and no.

2. Honestly, I'm not much of a gamer. I'd be "game" (sorry) to try. But I don't know much at all about the medium.

GREG WROTE:
Saw RETURN OF THE KING. And I really, really liked it, although I didn't really, really like the first hour. Overall, I enjoyed the first two movies more, but don't get me wrong. I'm not comparing this to the awful Return of the Jedi, at all. I still loved it, and I can't wait to see the extended version.

The movie that actually caught me by surprise was PETER PAN. I really liked it a lot. It's so melancholy and bittersweet. Peter looked terrific (and was about 50/50 on the acting). Some things may have been a bit on the head, but it's Neverland, not Subtletyland. Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's a better movie than LOTR, but I thought the reviews of Pan were way harsh.

KELLY RESPONDS:
I had the opportunity to see both RETURN OF THE KING and PETER PAN on Christmas day. Excellent films that fulfilled my expectations and left me feeling quite content - despite the fact that I cried my eyes out during a few touching scenes (I'm such a sap). I look forward to purchasing the boxed set when it's released but I'm trying to stop myself from buying all of those irresistible marketing tie-ins like script-books, action figures, One Ring and sword replicas etc.

And PETER PAN holds a special place in my heart, as it was the very first story my mother ever read to me in bed as a child (I still have the tattered and faded book my mother read from, tucked away in my closet), and I grew up watching the televised stage production with Mary Martin as Peter (yes, I'm THAT old). I thought Jeremy Sumpter did an excellent job in the role of Peter, and Rachel Hurd-Wood was quite charming. I agree the critics were too harsh, but I also felt slightly uncomfortable with the not-so-subtle sexuality between Peter and Wendy, and the odd pedophilic vibe I got between Captain Hook and his delicious little prey, Wendy. But I still loved the film and will probably buy the DVD when it's released.

Greg, if you had Peter Jackson's 300 million plus budget and could make any movie you wanted, what would it be? A medieval epic (a la Gargoyles or Robin Hood), a modern-day drama (i.e. House of Sand and Fog) or a gritty, futuristic tale (Blade Runner, The Matrix)?

Greg responds...

It might be hard to resist doing a Gargoyles movie. But if I REALLY had carte blanche, I think I'd do it in animation, not live-action.

Indeed, I have many pet projects I'd love to do in both Animation and live action. And frankly, I wouldn't need 300 million to do them. Carte blanche and fifteen million would allow me to make any animated movie I wanted.

As to the genre, I've got all sorts of notions in all sorts of genres. It's hard, in a vaccuum to pick out the one I'd do first.

If a Gargoyle had something happen to him when he was stone during the day, like say someone shot at him and the bullet got lodged in there, or a spear went through a wing and was left that way, would it still be stuck that way when night came?

Greg responds...

I guess so. Though there might be some healing already in progress depending on how long before sunset the incident took place.

Of course if the shot or spear or whatever was enough to kill him, it would kill him -- and he would never transform back from stone.

Not really a question but a bit of info:

Mr. Weisman,
You said you wished to know what had happened to the elves at Helm's Deep in LOTR: The Two Towers. It is my belief (if I'm reading Tolkien's original work correctly) that the elves there all "died." The quotation marks are used because on Middle-earth, the elves are immortal. If they are killed, they are re-born, so to speak, some time later with full memories of their past experiences.
Just thought I'd share that...although, by the time you read this, I'm sure you'll have sated your curiosity.

Greg responds...

It's been years and years since I read Tolkien, and it may be true that in the book the elves all died. But I see NO indication of that in the movie. So when I comment on the movie version of Return of the King, I think it's fair to ask the question what happened to the elves from the movie version of TT.

Now of course, we very dramatically see one elf die. The guy we've met before, whose name escapes me at the moment. But I saw no indication that either he was the last one left and/or that all the others died after him.

Given how the movie presents the elves as SO much better fighters than anyone else we meet, I likewise find it hard to believe that so many humans survived and not one elf.

Keep in mind, though, that I DO love these movies.

Greg responds...

I don't know what the international gameplan (Mexico included) was or is. Sorry.

Goliath Chronicles was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, but with the exception of the voice cast, nearly the entire crew was replaced. The new crew had very little time even to familiarize themselves with the existing series.

This is probably going to reach you such a long time from now that the "freshness" will have most likely gone out of it by the time that you read it, but:

You raised the question as to what happened to the Elves who fought at Helm's Deep in the movie version of "The Return of the King". My own impression from the "Two Towers" movie was that they were all slain during the battle(except for Legolas), of course. Admittedly, they didn't refer to it in the dialogue for the "Return of the King".

Greg responds...

I've seen that movie at least three times now, and I NEVER got the impression that ALL were slain. Perhaps after the battle, they all headed for the coast. But there was never any indication that they were massacred down to the last elf. And it's tough to buy.

I love the trilogy, but if I have one complaint, I would have liked to have seen more elves and dwarves beyond just Legolas and Gimli fighting at the Gates of Sauron.

What are the limits on the binding spell that Oberon put on Puck? From a certain perspective Puck would be protecting Alex by using his magic on Xanatos' enemies. A premptive attack by Puck would spare Alex much trauma, so protecting Alex's emotional state in this way would be as important as protecting his phyiscal state in the result of a direct attack on his person.

Greg responds...

One bends the rules just enough so that they won't break. Besides, Puck has his own ethos... he promised Xanatos a lifetime of service as Owen -- without help from Puck. So he personally doesn't want to just go puckalicious for no reason -- or even for a trumped up reason.

Besides, who says Xanatos has enemies? ;)

Why is it that Hutson's sword dosen't trun to stone as i'm shure he must think of it as "his property" right?

Greg responds...

It's not about property, it's about whether he thinks of it as part of his ensemble or as a tool. So it's inconsistent. Basically, when he's unconscious about it, it does turn to stone. When he's aware of it as a weapon, it doesn't. If you've seen every episode, you've seen both.

I try not to 'ask Greg' very often because most of my questions have been answered before. However, this one has been gnawing at me for some time.

1. Was there a double meaning in the title "Long way to Morning," or did it mean just what it says, or could it have meant that 'it'll be a long time before there is mourning over a death,' or something to that effect?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

I'm not going to toss out secondary interpretations. And the morning/mourning wordplay has occured to me. But mostly when I came up with the title, I just thought it sounded cool. No particular double meaning was immediately in my thoughts.

I recently answered this. Check the archives. The entire first season appeared on the first DVD. No exceptions. No cuts.

And of course Disney didn't -- and would never -- intentionally destroy an asset.

I've got a number of questions about Gargbeasts and their relation to the Clan. It always seemed to me that the Gargoyles had a deeper connection to their Gargbeasts than we humans tend to have with our "lesser" beasts. (Though, where dogs are concerned, I don't get how a creature that is naturally caring and loyal can be considered lesser to anything.)

1. Are Garg-Beasts considered siblings, parents, and sons/daughters by the rest of the Gargoyles in a clan? Would Goliath consider Bronx a Rookery Son and the Trio consider him a Rookery Brother?

2. Do GargBeasts and Gargoyles nurse each others offspring? (Evolutionarily, I can see the advantage in this, as it provides a greater variety of anti-bodies to the hatchlings.)

3. While I have serious doubts that a Gargbeast can ever become a Clan leader, are they ever in positions of authority or rank over the sentient Gargoyles?

Greg responds...

1. No. There is an awareness that Beasts are a separate species. But I do believe that the bond between Gargoyles and Beasts is stronger, and more akin to blood relation than the bond between humans and their pets. Beasts are not considered pets. They do not have "masters". The relationship is closer to one of equals than of master/pet. Grok?

2. I don't think so. But I'll admit I haven't given this much thought.

3. I won't say 'never'. But it doesn't seem likely. Though you should keep in mind that typical gargoyle "government" isn't exactly ripe with bureaucracy. There is the Leader and the Second. And that is all. Beasts ARE warriors. And on that score, Bronx, for example, is considered an equal to Lex or Broadway or Hudson or Angela. Only Goliath as Leader and Brooklyn as Second have actual authority over Bronx and the others. Now, keep in mind, one of the other Gargoyles might tell Bronx to do something in the heat of the moment. Or ask him to come somewhere or refuse to let him go along. But that's not authority. That's just life. Hudson might likewise tell Lexington to do something in the heat of the moment. Or ask him to come somewhere or refuse to let him go along, etc.

Good questions.

Have you ever considered starting the Gargoyles comic book back up again under a another corporation, instead of Marvel comics? In this country you can get away with whole lot more with comics then cartoons.

Greg responds...

We (SLG and creaturecomics.com) are starting the Comic up. The first issue will appear in 2006.

Of course, "getting away with a whole lot more" isn't the objective. Never was. I just want to tell great stories. Besides, it's still a Disney license. Disney reads every script I write. They're not going to let me "get away with a whole lot more".

But as long as I can do what I've always done, I'm more than fine with that.

Can the fans raise money via a campaign to purchase the rights to Gargoyles and get the series produced again since Disney is not interested in producing it again thus far. Or can a fan representative initiate doing this by petitioning another company to buy it! Is it unreasonable to try this approach!

Greg responds...

Both suggestions, sweet as they are, are completely unrealistic. If fans collectively have that much disposable income at hand, I urge them to spend that money on the two DVDs, the upcoming comic book series from SLG and CCC and on the Annual GATHERINGS. In lieu of money, please help to SPREAD THE WORD!

At this point in time, these are THE best methods for increasing the series' profile and giving us a REAL chance at bringing it back.

My question is, have you thought about taking up your ideas to Cartoon Network, so that perhaps they might utilize resources and purchase the rights to Gargoyles in hopes that you will be able to continue your fascinating story.

For you see, in my personally opinion, Gargoyles would make a great contribution to Cartoons Network's edition to the Adult Swim block.

Ok, there are three things I know:
1. Disney owns the rights to Gargoyles
2. Disney is releasing the DVD's in 2004 to coincide with the 10th anniversary
3. Disney doesn't like the epiosde "Deadly Force" and stopped showing it on TV

That leaves me with two questions.....
1. Is Disney even going to include this episode in their DVD release?
2. And if they are, is it going to be censored like it was on TV?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

1. True
2. The first season, yes. Volume One of the second season is being released on December 6th, 2005.
3. That's not quite accurate. Obviously, for a time, they were gunshy (pun intended) about showing it. But I understand they show it now. Besides, Disney has a lot of divisions. What the S&P department at Toon Disney feels, doesn't necessarily reflect what the folk at Home Entertainment feel.

So...

1. It did. The episode is present on the first DVD released last year (December 7th, 2004).
2. All episodes are uncut, uncensored.

First of all, I love Gargoyles, and still watch them to this day. I've been watching since it was aired, and I'll be watching my tapes until the day I die. Anyways, I've never really understood the episode M.I.A. Una and Leo recognize Goliath when he arrives, but Goliath has no idea who they are. Goliath then uses the Phoenix Gate to travel back in time to try and save Griff, and figure out what is going on. Goliath saves Griff, brings him back to the 1990's, and all is well. Goliath then tells Elisa that he 'first had to travel back in time to meet them' (Una and Leo). But I don't understand. Supposedly, he was frozen in stone when he met Griff, Una and Leo. So how would they (Una and leo) have known him? It doesn't make sense. If you could explain, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Greg responds...

Sigh. (I sigh because if the explanation -- let alone the demonstration of that explanation -- from the episode wasn't clear, I'm unlikely to be able to make it clearer for you in writing here and now.)

Yes, Goliath was frozen in stone in Scotland during WWII.

But in the 1990s, THAT Goliath (the Goliath of the 1990s) went back in time and met Leo and Una and Griff DURING WWII. So they met him THEN. But he (the Goliath of the 1990s) hadn't met them yet, when they first encountered him AGAIN outside the magic shop at the beginning of the episode.

As he said, first HE had to go back in time to meet them.

It's a time loop. What I call a "Working Paradox".

It's easy to draw a picture of on a piece of paper, so come to the GATHERING in Los Angeles this summer, and I'd be happy to demonstrate.

In "Future Tense" when Broadway is "killed" Goliath says "Goodbye, my friend". This surprised me. Wouldn't Goliath think of Broadway more as his son? The word "friend" just seemed awkward to me in context of the relationship between Goliath/Broadway. What are your thoughts?

Greg responds...

Broadway is too old for Goliath to regard him as a Rookery-Son. And too young for Goliath to regard him as a Rookery-Brother. Now, without a doubt, Goliath regards Broadway as family, as part of his clan, as a cousin, as someone so close to being a "little brother" that it might not be unexpected for him (if he were human) to use the term.

But Gargoyles aren't humans. They don't use the term "little brother" to describe that relationship. Or any relationship, really.

And the word "friend" to a gargoyle carries real weight. It's not insignificant or casual.
