Uncle D, writes...

* How old is Dudley?
* Is he Billy's uncle, or his guardian (or both?)
* What does/did he do for a living? I noticed a poster in Misplaced, he looks like some circus magician.
* Why didn't he have any lines in Misplaced? You had Corey Burton in the cast, after all

Greg responds...

1. Dudley is 65 at the end of Season One.

2. He is Billy's legal guardian. They're not actually related by blood, but Billy calls him "Uncle Dudley". And Dudley certainly is avuncular.

3. He's had many jobs over the years. Now, he's eligible for Social Security. Plus he takes odd jobs, and is something of a scammer.

4. Well, we didn't think he NEEDED any lines, but this is a good question generally, and provides me the opportunity to explain how the system works - at least on our series.

All our actors - Corey included, of course - share a similar contract, with a favored nation clause. That means whatever deal one actor gets, if it's superior to what the other actors have, they ALL get it. That sounds great, but it has the reverse effect. It means the studio is NEVER willing to pay extra for anything or anyone, because if they do - then they have to match it for EVERY actor in the series, and that's just not budget-friendly.

So that means every actor - whether they're famous or a first-timer - gets the exact same deal.

And, per SAG (i.e. the Screen Actor's Guild), here's the deal:

*For a specific amount of money (that, NO, I will not state - so don't ask), we get an actor to play ONE character per episode.
*For no additional money, we can ask that actor to play a SECOND character in the same episode.
*For a SMALL additional fee, we can ask that actor to play a THIRD character in the same episode. (The budget allows for this small additional fee, so you'll often see us use one actor for three voices in a given episode.)
*But if we want a FOURTH character, we have to pay the actor from scratch. A full second payment.

So, it costs us no more or no less to hire ANOTHER actor to play that fourth character as it would to ask an actor already in the cast to play that fourth. And if we hire that other actor, we can get him or her to play a FIFTH character for free, and a SIXTH for that small additional fee. So there's no economic insentive to give one actor more than three roles.

Now, we're not above doing it when it's warranted. For example, if we needed Superboy, Superman, Zatara and Marvin White in one episode, I wouldn't hesitate to pay Nolan North two full payments to get them. BUT - and here's where your original Corey question comes in - if we could get away with Marvin appearing WITHOUT speaking, then that would save us some money, and it's a path we might take.

SO, with Corey, we NEEDED him to play Brain, James Gordon and Wizard. That's three voices. We didn't need Dudley to speak, so we saved some money there.

I love Young Justice. Though I always seem to miss the new episodes. It just about ruins my day when that happens. Just being able to watch it on T.V. makes me jittery with joy. Hello, Mr. Greg Weisman,

I'm back with posting #9. I wasn't able to post yesterday (the day before this posting) because I had a technical issue and wasn't able to use the internet. But now I am able to today. Here's my new set of questions.

1. I was wondering if you could tell me what the specifics of each part of Earth-16 Batman’s batsuit are? This question was inspired by watching the Christopher Nolan film Batman Begins and its sequel, The Dark Knight. These two movies did a great job in explaining/showing the functions of each part of Batman’s suit (the gloves, the cape, the suit, the belt, the gauntlets, etc.). If you’ve ever watched these two movies, you probably have a vague idea on what I’m trying to say. Also, could you tell me whether this is Batman’s only batsuit on Earth-16, or does he have more than one?

2. If Billy Baston is depicted as 10 years old, THEN when he transforms into Captain Marvel, what is the EXACT age difference between his adult and child form? An exact number for his adult age would actually be extremely helpful at this point.

3. Where did you come up with the idea to allow Captain Marvel to hug Batman and Zatara? Has he ever done that before…? But seriously, that was downright funny, and I laughed like mad! Just for fun, when Captain Marvel gave the hug, what were Batman and Zatara thinking at that very moment?

4. When exactly did Wonder Woman decided to leave the island of Themyscira, and what important events happened to her between that time and 2003?

5. I am a person who believes that when I see things that may have something in common with another, there are absolutely no coincidences. First, in the DC relaunch, the first Justice League story arc established that in 2006 (chronologically in the mainstream DCnU), Darkseid invaded Earth (because he was searching for his daughter at that time). Second, it has been revealed via information on the internet about one of the new DC relaunch titles, “Earth Two,” which is coming in May, that the parallel Earth-2 (which is much different from before the DC relaunch) was known to have been under threat by Apokolips (and not necessarily by Darkseid himself). Third, we have Young Justice: Invasion, which is the second season of the cartoon series that you announced a long time ago, that has our main characters needing to prepare to fight against an invasion. Is there some common theme that I am seeing?! Is Earth-16 going to be under threat by the upcoming Apokolips?! Or is it just my imagination…? Your response will hopefully help to tell me how accurate I am.

Thanks for taking the time to read my questions. As always, keep up the good work.

Greg responds...

1. I'm honestly not sure what you're asking me here, and I have seen both those movies. But he does have more than one suit, in case he spills something.

2. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

3. Just seemed in character for him at that moment. I think Zatara was annoyed, and Batman was already a couple steps ahead, focusing on what this all meant.

4a. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

4b. You gotta be kidding me. You expect me to post her entire biography here?

5. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT. Other than to say that as I've been ASKED AND ANSWERED before, the goings-on over at DC haven't had any effect on us one way or the other, because we were already too far along.

So, I know that this is right before yet another episode, but, I just had to come say stuff.

You have two episodes that have simply blown my face off. Failsafe (my brain practically melted out of my head, I was so amazed) and Misplaced (I can't even describe my feelings for this episode). That doesn't happen very often from an animated show.

I really adore how you all have been portraying the teen/adult dynamic. It's not the cliche rebellious teens vs. overly righteous and/or idiotic adults, but it's much more...realistic. Well, as realistic as supers can be. You all do such an excellent job of getting into a teenage mindset, and that really impresses me.

M'gann, from what I can tell, either gets a lot of hate, or a lot of love. Personally, I was in the gray area, not quite sure if I liked her being around, or what. I knew I liked her "Hello, Megan!" catch phrase, and I liked that she based a lot of her knowledge off of tv (makes sense). But, now that we've seen more of her, I've come to really appreciate her as a character. She's got her reasons for her personality, and, sure, she's got some naivety, but she's also not a weak damsel in distress - and you all manage to pull that last bit off without making her come across as masculine! Which I love.

Artemis is kind of a big deal to me. I generally hate female characters like her. The strong, tough-girl who doesn't need anyone's help because she can do this, and has a major attitude. So, yes, I was less than thrilled when Artemis was introduced. But, like with M'gann, more came along, and ya'll showed up with little moments (I really warmed up to her from that one little scene in Downtime), and then a bit of her back story, and all of the sudden, Artemis' whole demeanor had meaning, and I was able to connect, understand, and love her character.

Everyone else I pretty much loved first off (big Batman fan - oh, yeah, your Batman series? My favorite. FYI. - so, Robin had no need to wiggle his way into my heart).

I also love how easily you all eased Zatanna into being a regular and new teammate (I'm assuming. I think it's safe to assume such things at this point). I didn't want her part of the team at first, but you all did such a fantastic job at giving her more time with the team, and more screen-time, that, I rather like having her around, now.

So, yeah. Thanks, well done, do more goodness. I hope to have my face blown off, and my brain melted out of my head again. Go tell everyone that they're my favorites. Yourself included.

Greg responds...

"[My] Batman series?" Uh. I never had one. I did freelance write a bunch of episodes for "The Batman", but that hardly makes it "mine".

Otherwise, thank you!

I mean, we saw them play basketball and that was sweet, but we haven't seen anything else! They completely ignored each other in Misplaced! So, I guess what I'm asking is if they have a father/son relationship or if it's more like a mentor/sidekick relationship?

1. Why did you make Ma'alefa'ak the name of a type of Martian animal instead of Martian Manhunter's evil twin brother like in the mainstream comics? I'm excited for Cold Hearted and I'm still freaking out over the end of Misplaced, but I have a question about Klarion's magic circle. Why is it that none of the wizards he summoned were not surprised by being summoned to an island by a Lord of Chaos? Hi, Greg! :) Me and my family love this show. I talk about it all the time during shcool. All the heroes you show in Young Justice had convinsed me to buy my first comic book (the new 52 made it really easier, though!!!) Thank you for answering these questions and um I'm really really sorry if these questions are too spoiler-ish or if they have been answered before...

1. To my wiki knowledge, I don't think Megan has ever been with Superboy. Or Wally with Artemis. What made you choose these two people to go together. Basically, what made you decide on the pairings?

2. Does Artemis have a mentor bond with Green Arrow, or is the niese thing just a cover and that's it?

3. Were the main team's personalities made just for the show or were they influensced by the comics? Because I googled Superboy once and he was shown to be really outgoing and cheerful, which surprised me.

4. Captain Marvel shocked me when he transformed into a kid maybe even younger than me1! He's so cool. But when I searched his name in wiki, it said he has a twin sister and a lot of sidekicks and goes to an orphanage school (thats so sad!). In the show, though, he lives with an uncle(?) I think. So, um, where is Captain Marvel timeline-wise? Was this when he was already adopted and before he found his sister?

Thank you very much for your time!

Greg responds...

1. Felt right to us.

2. The niece thing was a cover, but they did quickly develop a mentor/protegee bond, which you'll see more of if you pick up our companion comic book, particularly in issue #16.

Hello, Mr. Weisman.

My questions today are more closely related to television programming. So here goes.

1. Have you viewed the new ThunderCats on Cartoon Network that debuted last year? Assuming so, what did you think of it?

2. Have you viewed any of the original episodes of the ThunderCats cartoon? Assuming so, what is your opinion of the old show, and how do you think it compares to the latest incarnation?

3.The original ThunderCats cartoon met the 65 mark episode needed to go into syndication, and produced episodes beyond it. While many of the new episodes were entertaining, I could not help but notice, in my opinion, a decline in certain qualities of the show. One of the areas hit hardest, in my opinion, was the writing in the episodes. This seemed to manifest itself in terms of more predictable scenarios occurring, less creative solutions to the problems that arose and eventually lackluster storylines. ThunderCats wasn’t the only show to suffer from this though. Cartoons like Captain Planets, which also surpassed the 65-episode mark, began to experience a bit of a lag, and lost many of the original voice actors/actresses who made their characters so exceptional.
4. So my question is what exactly happens to a show behind the scenes after moving beyond syndication? Is a show’s storyline only plotted out for 65 episodes and not expected to pass it? Or does the writing team have to brainstorm an entirely new set of ideas for episodes beyond? Are new writers assigned to the program or the old ones retained? Are the initial voice actors/actresses replaced with new people, choose not to renew their contract or different causes altogether?

Thanks for the time.

Greg responds...

1. I haven't had time to see it, but I really like the people involved with it.

2. I did a long time ago, when I was working on a single script for a different reboot that didn't see the light of day. But you need to understand that I never saw it when it first came on, so I have no nostalgia for it.

3. I just have no opinion on this. I only saw a handful of episodes.

4. Every case is different. And obviously, I have no idea what went on with ThunderCats.

I was just reading the Toonzone interview with the late Dwayne McDuffie (http://www.toonzone.net/news/articles/36545/toonzone-presents-an-interviewtribute-to-dwayne-mcduffie) and he describes the difference between Story By credits and Teleplay By credits on Justice League, and how there may be a lot more writing done by uncredited main writers on the show. Is this similar to how you work on your shows?

Greg responds...

Yeah, more or less.

Are there any more servants in the Wayne household, or is Alfred the only one?

Greg responds...

Just Alfred.

I hate to post twice in a row, but this question *definitly* can't be included with the last one, and I don't trust myself to remember this another day.

I know you've been reading the "Buffy" season 8 comics. Do you have any plans on ever updating your "Buffyverse Geek-Out" to reflect any changes that have occurred since season 7?

Greg responds...

No. One of these days, time allowing, I'd love to sit down and read all of Season Eight in one sitting. But it's not a high priority, I'm afraid.

Hi Greg! First off, I'd like to thank you for posting all those old production memos from "Gargoyles". I love reading 'behind the scenes' stuff, and seeing the way the story develops over time. It kind of reminds me of Christopher Tolkien's "History of Middle-Earth" series, albeit on a smaller scale.

Now, I have a few questions that I hope can be considered to all fall under the general category of "series development". A couple of them might be stretching it a bit, but I think it'll be okay (and if not, you'll tell me).

1. You started posting production memos for your "Re-Awakening" ramble. Are there any surviving memos from "Thrill" to "Her Brother's Keeper"?

2. When you wrote "The Journey", did Scott Thomas send you a prod. memo?

3. Are there any memos from "Spectacular Spider-Man"?

4. One thing that really struck me when reading some of the notes from early '92 was just how early the Pack came along in the development. Which got me to thinking about another early villian. Was Tony Dracon's involvement planned all along, and he just happened to first appear in "Deadly Force", or was he created specifically because "Deadly Force" needed a new villian? (Awkward sentance, I know, but I can't seem to get this phrased quite right. Do you get what I'm saying?)

Thanks for taking the time to answer these. We will now return to our regularly scheduled "Young Justice" questions.

Greg responds...

1. I'm sure there are. But there are difficulties in posting them, including but not limited too: (a) not enough hours in the day (b) most of those memos were only preserved as documents - not electronically, so that it's not as simple as cutting and pasting (c) most of those documents are at my private office in Beverly Hills, and I'm almost never there, since producing YJ here in Burbank keeps me pretty busy.

2. No.

3. Very few. Those were mostly done via e-mail, and I didn't keep a record of that. Also, I was personally story editing SpecSpidey, so I wasn't writing memos to my story editors, as I was on Gargoyles.

4. I get what you're saying, but I honestly can't remember. My vague guess is that we always knew we'd need a "crime boss" of some kind, but that we probably didn't develop Tony until we got to his episodic premiere.

1. In Homefront how did Kid Flash and Superboy get encased in metal?
2. How long has Wonder Woman been active as a heroine?
3. Could you give a translation of the spell Kent Nelson used to protect Kid Flash from Klarion?
4. Are the designations of the Light based on the order they joined?

Greg responds...

1. Molten metal, i.e. Superboy's motorcycle, heated by Red Inferno and rapidly cooled by Red Torpedo.

2. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

3. "Certe toto sentio nos in kansate non iam adesse!" I don't have the exact translation from the Latin here with me, but it's more or less along the lines of "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more."

4. Yes.

Do you know why the scene in "Misplaced" where two hoodlums are spray painting on the school, and are stopped by Miss Martian were cut from the broadcast version of the episode, but included in the digital releases, such as iTunes?

Greg responds...

Length issues. We had to trim time from a handful of episodes that originally posted BEFORE we had an official length for DC Nation (which is shorter in order to make room for the shorts).

Recently DC has announced that, due to what I assume are years of legal issues, they are going to stop calling Billy Batson's alter-ego "Captain Marvel" in the comics and call him "Shazam" instead. Now, if this were any other New 52 issue such as "Will any new Teen Titans appear in Young Justice," I wouldn't even bother asking because of how obviously spoiler-ific it is. However, for this particular subject, I can't help but wonder: Will Captain Marvel's name be changed to Shazam for the show? Would DC let you keep his old name even if you wanted to?

Greg responds...

We have no choice BUT to keep it as is, i.e. as Captain Marvel. Every single line of dialogue is already recorded, etc.

My first question didn't post for some reason, so here goes again:

1. Given that aside from that one stint in Florence, and NYC/Scotland, the place we see Demona show up the most in the series and comics is Paris. That, combined with her choosing a french name and identity made me wonder if Demona has some special affinity for Paris/France. Or am I just reading too much into it?

2. You've said that Demona is biologically the equivalent of a human 35, and at the beginning of the series Goliath was about 28 I think. Since in Awakenings the clan all thought Demona had been frozen in stone like them, didn't any of them notice that she maybe looked different, or older? (It's hard to tell with animation if she really did;)) I realize there was a lot going on, but didn't anyone notice anything...off about her? Or is Demona just one of those people that, magically protected from the effects of age/rough lifestyle, can pass for younger?

3. During the time of his reign and their alliance, did MacBeth ever find out that Demona is a sorceress? If so, what did he think about it? At the time, I would guess he might respect her ability to learn a...scholarly pursuit, maybe, but I can't imagine Grouch at least would be comfortable with it, especially as it seems her husband being suspected of sorcery was already a rumor.

Thanks so much for still taking the time to answer Gargoyles questions, since I'm sure Young Justice is taking up a lot of your time and attention lately :)

Greg responds...

1. Perhaps. Maybe she liked the work they did with the guillotine.

2. One doesn't have to invoke magic to look largely unchanged between the ages of 28 and 35. Some folks just have the genes for it.

3. Demona was never much of a practicing sorceress in those days. She had a bit of training and dabbled. I'm sure Macbeth was aware of that.

Hey Greg! It's been a while. Glad to see you busy, and "Young Justice" is great!

Anyway, I just saw in one of your answered questions that you're a fan of "Doctor Who."

I've actually been working my way through the ENTIRE series (both Classic and New) in airing order for a while now, thanks to a friend of mine who is a HUGE "Doctor Who" fan (mostly of the classic series). So that's why I find myself asking the following questions:

1) Are you more familiar with the New series (2005-present), or the Classic series (1963-1989)?
2) Do you have a favorite/preferred Doctor? If so, who?
3) What appeals to you most about the show?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

1. New, almost exclusively. Though I've seen the very first two episodes of the classic series, and a handful of others.

2. Christopher Eccleston, I guess. But I haven't disliked any of the others I've seen - though there are entire Doctors I've never seen more than a still picture of.

3. I actually admire how it plays so fast and loose with its own rules, but still makes it work somehow with a combination of tone and character and great twists.

Hi Greg,

I have a MacBeth question this time. You mentioned a while ago that MacBeth has worked as a stage actor in the past. I thought that was such an interesting tidbit about a guy we don't necessarily know a ton about. Was that you idea, and if so, what inspired it?

You also mentioned that you saw MacBeth as acting in a lot of George Bernard Shaw plays probably. Why is that? Shaw was pretty political - do you think that influenced MacBeth's decision to do those plays?

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

1a. It just felt right. Plus I like the idea of him collaborating with Shakespeare.

2. Yeah. It just felt like Shaw's work would appeal to Macbeth.

Hi Greg!
In Revelation and Failsafe, and later on Disordered, Wally seems to grow a bit closer to Artemis. Yet, they haven't had any interaction at all after episode 17 (just that bit on Misplaced about Teeklr), and it's like nothing ever happened. In fact, Wally is back to flirting with M'gann and all. So, I was wondering if you could say why he's acting like Failsafe never happened (without spoiling anything of course). Thanks in advance!

Greg responds...

I thought it was pretty clear from "Disordered" that he doesn't WANT to acknowledge what happened. He's afraid of it.
