Thought I'd share my thoughts on issue #23!

Team Year Zero:
Artemis and Barbara seem like they're getting along swimmingly. Hopefully, there's a great friendship about to form from that! Also, Alfred with the pizzas got a good chuckle from me. And it was really nice seeing Bruce wanting to stick around for Dick's birthday; just about warmed my heart.

The scene in Dhabar was also great. That one panel where M'gann explains to Clark how she caught onto him was subtly tragic: we learn that Conner doesn't keep mirrors or looks at his own face often, M'gann has memorized and learned every single one of his details and she hates lying to him even though she is.
1. Was thatDeadshot targetting Rumaan?

Team Year Five:
What a creepy place Batman and Robin are in. I've seen people speculate about it being Harvey Dent's home. I wouldn't really know, but I'm sure (or at least, I'm hoping) we'll know either by the end of this arc or find out about it in the show.

These last five years seem like they have been very unkind to Match. And I'm guessing these next few minutes/hours won't be kind to Barbara either.

I love the fighting dynamics between our abducted heroes. They have great synergy together, which of course means we're going to be gettinbg more awesomeness from them in the next issue. I see in the queue that someone has already asked why Icon was removed from the cover for this and a previous issue of YJ:I. To be honest, he was the one I was looking forward to the most, but I digress. I just hope nothing from the story was lost with his removal.

The bioship with La'gaan and M'gann was exactly what I had been waiting for! Even though I was pretty devastated with Superboy and Miss Martian's break up at first, I still felt that pairing her up with someone like La'gaan was an interesting idea and I was really curious about what would happene next with them.
However, aside from the cute crab cakes moment and M'gann trying to save him (I believe both are scenes from "Depths"), there wasn't much else about them so far that called for my attention. Add to that how my impression of La'gaan at first went a little bit south during the second half of "Happy New Year" and the fact that M'gann is still very hung up on Conner, I wasn't very sure how to feel about it anymore.
But this scene was just what I had been needing. It was sweet, it was touching and it explained the connection between them. I also feel really bad for La'gaan. I suspected he'd be a social outcast. It sucks and it's unfair, do I know. And as I suspected, M'gann understands perfectly. This is one of the reason why I had been so excited over the prospect of them being together. Hope we see more of this in the show.

Beast Boy's concern for Noor... Considering Bibbo and Noor were amongst the people Robin, Lagoon Boy and Blue Beetle rescued in the Invasion premiere that takes place a month later, I suspect he was right to worry.

And last but not least, the Collector of Worlds has given Martian Manhunter, The Flash and The Atom a real beating and now they're falling off to their doom. So not crash.

All in all, a superb and thrilling chapter! Can't wait for more!

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2. Icon was originally one of the abducted along with the two Captains, the two Supers and Wonder Woman. I was forced to rewrite him out of issues 21-25, and I do think it loses something in terms of chemistry and interaction. Same with Rocket, who was with Zatanna throughout. But NOTHING was lost from a plot standpoint. The story didn't change.

Oh, and again, just to be VERY clear: this stuff only effects the comic, not the television series. All the episodes are already animated and approved. CN's decision on when and where to air the series has nothing to do with DC's decision about the comic.

Why did you decide that Aquaman should only have telepathy with marine mammals instead of all sea life like he does in the comics?

It's what makes sense to me.

Dear Mr. Wiseman,

I know that these kind of shows are a big team effort, so just thanking the head-writer or the credited writer is not enough. So if you ever talk to your colleagues about how the audiences react to Young Justice, please tell them, that there is at least one viewer, where you exactly hit the right spot, and pushed his emotional buttons. As I said, there is at least one, but probably thousands, or millions, but I can only speak for myself. Especially the episode "Coldhearted" got me up and down a few times, so thanks to everyone involved for that.
Looking forward for more of that ...

And a thank you to you for interacting with us - even if it is just for you ego :)

I also got some questions.
Actually, think of them as cues, please. Feel free to write as much as you want about the topics I raise in those questions, please.

1) What exactly do we see during the endcredits, and what else can you tell us about them?

2) I see that you, and many other writers and producers, usually do not know much about the success of your show as seen from the business side of things, for example the ratings, or if your show has been sold internationally.
Do you not care about it, or is it acutally difficult for you to get this kind of information?
Or do you even try to avoid it, to not risk any (bad) influence?

3) From another reader's question I know that you were responsible for some English dubs. Does that experience affect your writing? Do you sometimes wonder how something you just wrote could be difficult to handle for those who translate your work into other languages (or cultures)?

I would have asked that question anyway, as I try to ask every author I can reach about it. But now that I know, that you know both sides of the problem, I am more inclined than ever, to hear your thoughts about it.

Thanks in advance :-D

Greg responds...

1. Not sure what you mean: they're end credits; what you see is what you get.

2. I care very much, but the bosses aren't always forthcoming.

3. Words always matter to me. But though languages fascinate me, I'm decidedly monolingual. (Though not proud of that fact.) So the short answer is no. I focus on making it work in English and otherwise cross my fingers and hope for the best.

According to a recent question, Zatara started fighting crime twelve years before Team Year 0, the same year as Superman. Was that a reference to the the fact that the first appearance, for both of them, was in Action Comics 1?

Greg responds...

In essence.

The premise of my questions may be flawed: if it is, I'm sorry.
In Agendas, Green Arrow says "If we're considering Blue Devil (for League membership)", as to imply that he doesn't think that the guy would be good for the job.

1)Is this true?
2)If it is true, what's the reason for GA's attitude towards Blue Devil?

Greg responds...

1. Not necessarily.

2. All he's saying is - at that time - Blue Devil had very little experience. Considerably less than Red Arrow.

I have one other question and it's a fun one.

Do you see any of the team or Justice League as being "serious" readers? If so, which writers do they like?
By "serious" I mean someone who will crack the classics like Melville, Milton, or Homer, or someone who likes serious fiction like... Toni Morrison or Gabriel Marquez.

P.S.

If people can ask about Catherine Cobert's age then I can certainly ask about this!

Greg responds...

Yes, you can. But the difference is that the age questions are objective. I've either done the math or I haven't. What you're asking for is incredibly subjective. I take the question seriously enough that I don't want to just toss out an answer without putting real thought into it. And so it would potentially take hours to answer it for the dozens of characters we have on the series. And I'm just not prepared to do that right now.

But the short answer is yes.

Hi Greg,

I'd like to offer an observation. Every one of the original team has played some role in the traumatic events of Darkest and Before the Dawn - even Wally and Connor who permitted these events to occur by staying silent. I don't see what Wally could have done, but Connor could have spoken up about M'Gann's activities, but he didn't.

I have not seen many viewers respond to Beast Boy, Impulse, and Blue Beetle being drugged, assaulted, kidnapped, and tortured. If I was Gar, Bart, or Jaime, I'd be hurt, humiliated, and beyond furious with Nightwing and the senior class. It's one thing to expect Justice Leaguers to roll with the punches, but Beast Boy is barely a teenager.

I understand that because of the genre you feel the need to keep things moving. Unfortunately, that means certain things get glossed over. (For example, I would have loved to have watched Wally and Artemis's first date.) Personally, I'm willing to give Artemis and Kaldur a pass because they have suffered so much. But, I hope that when the smoke clears, the team will hold Nightwing accountable for his actions

Greg responds...

You're assuming that when the smoke clears, that anyone's still alive to hold Nightwing accountable. Or that Nightwing's still alive to be held.

How old was Jason Todd in the hologram/picture that was shown in Depths?
Why did you decided to include Jason in Young Justice instead of skipping over him like in Batman the animated series?

Greg responds...

1. Not sure about the exact date on the hologram.

2. We're not basing our decisions on OTHER adaptations.

1) Reading the Stargate bible, have ever considered a Star Trek animated series? I know Paramount is very strict on that property.

2) Will you ever do another series of your own creation?

Thank you very much. Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Greg responds...

1. I'd love to do one, but no one's asked me. (Keep in mind, I was asked to develop Stargate. I don't just go out and independently develop series based on properties that somebody else owns.)

2. Again, I'd love to, but no one's bought anything original that I've pitched in a VERY long time.

Looking more and more forward to the tail end of this season based on the new trailer. Love Cap'n Marvel! LOVE STATIC! (If that's who he is of course) wink wink

1) About the storytelling of the series. I don't know if this was mentioned before, but I enjoy eps that are based on source material. Be it homage or adaptation similar to the Secrets and Disordered eps, I've looked at season two. My first discovery was the subtitle of the season possibly being influenced by a dc comics crossover event (that I believe you were involved with) called Invasion. There's also an ep about the Flash family introducing Impulse, a homage to another dc crossover event called Bloodlines, which did introduce new heroes and dealt with an alien invasion. So, were these intentional? Are there any other homages other than I guess Rimbor?

2) I noticed that Vandal Savage seems to be dressed in a uniform that looks similar to a Civil War Confederate uniform, is this your or Brandon's or Phil's idea?

3) In the episode Revelation, it seemed Joker knew at the very least something of the Light's plans leading to the events of Season two. Were these villains brainwashed through the Starro chips as well? Also, why were the heroes unable to find out anything from the captured villains?

Greg responds...

1. Some are intentional. Some are just sitting in the background radiation of our brains. Some may be coincidences. But the whole thing is an adaptation, so it's hard to separate what's what - and when you ask if there are others, the answer is, of course, yes.

2. The clothing choices were mostly Phil, I'd think. He may have discussed it with Brandon.

3. I think the premise of your question assumes facts not in evidence.

3a. No. Starro-Tech hadn't even been created yet, and in any case, why would they need it?

3b. Why WOULD they be able to find out much of anything?

I have questions about Performance. I really, really liked this episode-- it seems like every Robin adaption has to do a circus episode, but I liked that YJ's version wasn't a rehash of his origin. It's detailed in the comics and hinted at here, and I think that worked out really well.

1. From the context (i.e., "You guys are not on a mission" vs. "Batman's sending us..."), I'm guessing Robin lied to Artemis, Conner, M'gann, and Roy about having League sanction to pursue who was framing Mr. Haly. Is that true?

2. If it is true, did the others ever find out? Were there any repercussions for Dick?

Also, on a tangent: I really love the friendship between Wally and Dick. It's by far my favorite aspect of YJ, and I really enjoyed their dialogue in Darkest. I hope to see more of it!

Greg responds...

1. That's pretty much STATED in the episode, yes.

2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

Hi Greg, I have a question that's been plaguing me and I would love if you could shed some light:
You've previously said that Beast Boy needs to touch or see an animal in order to become it [ergo why he can't become a dinosaur, etc]. So my question is, how does he turn into that monkey-human hybrid? From what I can tell it's not a real animal, and seeing that he can turn into a human, and therefore it's not this form he has no control over, how does he transform into that hybrid?
Thanks!

Greg responds...

He evolved it himself.

I only have two questions, hopefully they're not spoiler requests and I'm apologize in advance if they are.

1) Was Black Manta holding back against Kaldur in Downtime?
2) If not, what was his reasoning behind allowing Kaldur to know that he (Manta) knew it was him?

Thanks for answering our questions, I loved Black Manta's Celebrity Hot Tub and I hope you can write more of them in the future. :)

Greg responds...

1. Depends what you mean. He wasn't trying to kill him.

2. As opposed to what?

Hey, Greg. Thanks for answering all our insane questions.

Thinking specifically about Young Justice, were there any characters that you meant to be... not very likeable? I mean, obviously the villains are the ones we love to hate, but of the Team or JLA? Like, hypothetically, did you (or anyone else) ever say, 'Ya know what? Lets make [insert character's name here] a complete jerk.'

I'm not looking for validation for people to hate on any one character. I'm just womdering if it was ever part of the thought process in the show.

Thanks a lot!

Greg responds...

Not unlikeable, no, but there were characters that we wanted NOT to mesh with the others quite so well. We wanted things like anger-management issues, jealousy issues, insecurity issues, etc. There are, I believe, non-positive qualities to nearly every major character on the show. Hopefully, the audience finds the characters real, and perhaps likes them more for their faults...

1) Did Artemis' poor relationship with her father make her leery of men at all? If so, did this cause her to have a difficult time trusting Wally early in their relationship and/or cause any strain in their relationship early on?
2) You stated that they had ups and downs during their relationship over the 5 year gap. Could you specify a bit? Were there large confrontations or temporary breakups? Or were they just typically small arguments, petty jealousy and/or similar situations?
3) Do Wally's parents know of Artemis' background and are they at all bothered by the fact that she comes from a criminal family?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these!

Greg responds...

1. Probably.

1a. Probably.

2. I could, but I'm not going to. It's a SPOILER REQUEST.

3. Yes.

3a. Not particularly.

Greg, you've mentioned several times here and elsewhere that Wally was a very insecure person during the first season, but I never got that feeling from watching the show. I don't deny that he seemed to be overcompensating for something at times, but I never understood why he felt the need to. In comparison, I thought the show did a great job with Artemis as we saw her tough girl facade crack a few times, and got a good feeling for why she put up that facade.

So my question is; did the show actually explore Wally's insecurities as a person during the first season? And if not, what exactly was he insecure about and why did he feel that way?

He's my favorite character on the show, and I just feel like I missed something somewhere along the way. Thanks!

Greg responds...

1. I think we explored it, but whether we succeeded is not for me alone to judge.

2. I think, during Season One, he's insecure about his speed relative to the Flash. He's insecure about the fact that Flash didn't initially want him as a sidekick/protege. He's insecure with girls/women. Etc.

Young Justice: Invasion is the only comic series I've bought regularly (came close with the Jaime/Blue Beetle one couple of years ago). Like the TV series it's got a great mix of characters and tells a bunch of engaging stories at an all ages level. I love being able to read a series and share it with my younger brother (So many of the 'normal' series are intensely violent and feature sexual assault so often...).

So, thank you and your staff for making this series so great! It's always sold out at our local store. I'm sorry to hear that it's ending in two months.

What are your thoughts on how to keep comics relevant and get them to people, particularly younger crowds? Are downloads making a difference? Would releasing more series as longer graphic novels twice a year rather than shorter monthlies help? What about the content? Thanks for your time!

Greg responds...

I don't claim to be an expert on these topics. Generally, I just write the kind of stories that _I_ would like to read.

I just wanted to thank you for something else. Your lengthy rambles are what got me to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and from there most of Whedon's other work. Thank you so much for that- I have experienced many hours of enjoyment thus. I was surprised that you haven't commented on any of his post-Firefly work, as far as I can tell from searching the archives. If you don't mind, assuming you've seen the following, what did you think of:

1. Dollhouse?
2. The Avengers?
3. Cabin in the Woods?

Thanks again! Oh, and I've completely missed the boat on Young Justice, but I may be getting season 1 for Christmas. I'll let you know what I think!

Please do.

1. I watched all of Dollhouse and will admit to mixed feelings. But it was long enough ago that I don't think I remember it clearly enough to speak to what exactly wasn't working for me. (And there was a lot I liked about it too.)

2. Great. There are little things I could quibble with, but in general, great.
