Brooklyn X: Yeah, I was angry when I said that, and I do apologize for it. I'm willing to give you a second chance if you promise not to do it again. So yeah, it's all in the past now, just please try to behave from now on, okay? And that last post was actually very mature of you, I admit. But please, no more split personalities, no more spamming, no more flaming people at the fanfic archive, and you should be just fine.

I see.

Strike 4, bad side.

Strike 4, good side.

I think that's the right score. And I used my spell check too.

Thanking the fallowing.
Funkadelic Gnome>Thanks!
Battle Beast>You know me!
Matt>If it stays like this, I'll stay.
Jerr Bear> Sorry man but you should not have blown my story out the window like that, but I can still forgive yea.

Who care that I stay here.

To Demona Taina>Supprizing words from you, I use to like your work you have on the net but I can still forget you even said that, to no hard feelings, OK?

To Siryn>You told me once yourself that you were nice, well I told you that I was acting this Brooklyn part like in a movie. So, I'll show my real self well like I am now If you can forgive me. Like you said if I give you an apology than you would talk to me than here it is "I'm so very sorry", their. Now I hope that can heal the wounds.

that's all I can say for now.

"We were brothers once and we are brothers still"
heee...I can so hear Goliath saying that. :)

Hmmm...well I haven't seen the episode in a while--I'm going from memory, so It's entirely possible that my brain filled in the blanks to complement my existing interpretation. If there *was* a nod, it was subtle...almost more of a heavy blink. I'll have to pay attention next time Reawakenings comes along. :)

I agree--that Gargoyles could pack so much meaning into a short, silent exchange really speaks to the quality of the show.

Like I said, I think that there were several things going on between Coldstone and Goliath, and I agree that "brothers forever" was an important part of it. Dang I wish I had tapes of the show! I'm gonna be first in line when the DVD comes out :D

Hmm, interesting idea, but I always thought it was more to what DT had suggested. I got the impression that it was Goliath saying, "We were brothers once and are brothers still. Help me." Coldstone hesitates because his programming/Demona's brainwashing tells him to, but it's when Goliath's grasp leaves him that he realizes that Goliath is his brother and he should save him.

I don't want to completely discard the idea of Goliath's asking for forgiveness, but that strikes me as secondary symbolism, and I don't think that it was Goliath asking for forgiveness so much as it was Coldstone having to realize that what Demona told him was wrong.

And I don't want to sound harsh, but where do you see Coldstone nod? I see his initial reaction to Goliath's grasp and then his following Goliath as he sinks, but I don't see a nod of recognition. From what I see, other than the initial reaction Coldstone is cold, pardon the pun, to Goliath's grasp, and Goliath lets go, I always thought, because he felt that the intended message I described hadn't made it through Demona's propaganda.

But just may be my interpretation. Thoughts?

I agree with Zess too- one of the things I liked best about this series was so much was said without spelling it out- ie, the look that Goliath and Coldstone shared. I like that-that so much is said with a look, and nothing else

It was probably a combination of things, but I thought the main idea was that Goliath was asking for forgiveness. He took Coldstone's wrist, they shared a look, Coldstone nodded, and Goliath let go. Earlier, during the in-town battle, Demona's barbs about Goliath's role in the destruction of the clan had obviously hit home. Goliath knew his brother blamed him, and at that point, he was feeling raw enough that he sorta agreed.

I think Goliath clasped hands with Coldstone for one of these reasons:

1) Maybe it was like a plea for help. "We are brothers, don't let this happen"
2) An "I forgive you" kind of thing
3) Could have been "Goodbye, brother"

Or it could have just been something like "Nice knowing you" or even a dazed and confused reaction. He knew Coldstone all his life, so maybe he went into a weird flashback of some sort and instinctively grabbed his hand because he trusted Coldstone at one point. *shrugs*

Jerr> I wasn't studying Stephen King or anything, it was just something I read when I wasn't busy with something else. I was bored at school (not many friends) so I read during lunch and breaks. lol

Oh, a good Arthurian legend book is "Firelord", by Parke Godwin. Very good, and actually pretty amusing.

Matt: That's a great idea! Let's talk about Gargoyles again!

Here's a Gargoyles question for all of you:

In Reawakening, when Goliath was in danger of drowning and as he started to lose consciousness, he held on to Coldstone's forearm briefly. Now, here's my question: was it merely a cry for help, or a warrior's wrist-shake? Both? And why?

The spammer of many names> hahaha, you've had your fun. it really was a great joke, so cunning and funny and original. anyway, now you can either fade off into a memory or stay and act like a respectful fan. make your choice.
and if you have a gripe against one or two or 10 fans, fine, but don't come running into the room with threats to all of us or insults to the gay population. i've been upset with members of the fandom at times also, but name-calling and spamming only show those of us who remain neutral that your enemies are right about you. better to come up with an honest, respectful and intelligent post that will really do some damage. an insult or silly joke will be forgotten by the time the room clears, but a good point will live on in the minds of those who would read it.
i don't condone or agree with what you did, but i don't feel like you should be banished either, not yet. you may have the ability to be a decent addition to this room, but if you know you don't want that or are unwilling to try, then please leave of your own accord.

The Hobbit> ummm, i read this in fifth grade and was required to read it in my eighth grade class and have reread it many times and it has never seemed difficult as a book to me. in fact, i assumed it was meant to be a young adult's book. the LotR trilogy is a bit tougher, but still not terribly difficult. maybe everyone is different on this, but i have never heard anyone say it was that hard of a book until now.

i wonder when (or if) we will discuss Gargoyles in this room again...

I got bored, so I'm making a list of Anime and Animated shows I love:

Gargoyles: What can I say about this series? The only show and animation that Disney has done that I actually like, as well as write fan fiction for. Also, a great storyline that appeals to adults and kids alike.

Cowboy Bebop: Top notch animation, top notch characters, and great storyline. One of those series that relies more on the group of characters than a single character.

Perfect Blue: This anime movie got my attention because of one review on the cover, "If Disney and Hitchcock made a movie together, this would be it!" Not only is it utterly trippy, but it makes sense when it wraps up (If you paid attention). Don't watch the dub, though! They replaced Japanese songs with English VA's that cannot sing, IMO.

Ninja Scroll: If you want pure action, Ninja Scroll has it. If you want great animation, Ninja Scroll has it. If you want a good story, Ninja Scroll has it. This anime owns!

Vampire Hunter D (1985): Ok so the animation isn't too good considering it's old, and the story has a few holes, but this anime addicted me to anime at the age of 13!

Battle Angel: Only two episodes, yet it re-addicted me and kept me addicted at 15 on up.

Bastard!: I've only seen two episodes, however this is one of the funniest anime series I've seen! Dark Schneider = hilarious villian/hero!

Ruin Explorers: Hailed as the Serious Slayers, even though I didn't like it at first, a second viewing hooked me. Too bad it's only a 4 episode OVA and not a TV series.

Gravitation: Hilarious, but has it's serious moments. This anime is one of the few shounen ai series I have seen. Great music too, though a bit pop…

Gundam Wing: One of the few shows to make me shed tears on occasion, that's how much I love the characters on that anime series.

Gundam X: Less serious than Gundam Wing, this alternate universe to the original Mobile Suit Gundam rocks!

X-Men and X-Men Evolution: Anything that addresses the negativity of bigotry draws me in, plus the story is good too.

Princess Mononoke: Rocks.

The Simpsons: How can I not list this animated show? I grew up to this show!

Futurama: Better than The Simpsons, IMO.

Family Guy: Not better, but still funny.

Heavy Metal: Old animation, very intriguing stories though.

South Park: Offensive enough to actually make a point throughout each episode…

There's more series, but I'm too lazy to type up the rest.

FG>>"(but then, I was reading Stephen King when I was in grade 7 and I understood it O_o; )"

Hehe! I didn't read Stephen King in Middle School, but everyone thought I was weird for not reading RL Stine and reading Piers Anthony instead. Also for spending half the year checking out the "Legend of King Arthur" from the school's library because it had the words: hath, thee, thou, lo and behold, etc.

I still need to read The Hobbit. I can only read LOTR once, it took me a month to get through Book one of the Volumized Version. Two weeks for the rest.

Which reminds me, anyone ever read "The Iron Tower" Trilogy by Dennis L. McKiernan? It's similiar to LOTR, but shorter.

I actually had an easy time reading The Hobbit (but then, I was reading Stephen King when I was in grade 7 and I understood it O_o; ). I love The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (I have two or three copies of each, heheh), but The Silmarillion is a pain in the butt to read. Am I the only one who gets confuzzled out of my head while trying to read that? I've owned that book for several years and I STILL haven't finished it. o_o;

Spamming is childish behavior, regardless if you're a 'newbie' or 'oldbie' and there's no excuse for it...so it's no wonder people would be cross with someone who did it. I can't say I blame them.

Greg and Alexgarg> Got the files! Thankyou very very very very much!! *hugs them both!!!!*

Alexgarg> I know I know. ^_^;;

Books vs movies: I think some movies can be done better than the original story (Little mermaid for example) and then others can't. Jurassic Park for example. ^_^ So, it really all just depends.

Greg> *L* You really are the Tolkein Master aren't you?! *L* Thanks for all the really great info! :D

I admit hobbit was very hard to read. I reread it while at sea, and TOlkein's writing is sometimes a struggle to get through, but I'm still glad I did

Greg B>> I pretty much compared Faramir to Aragorn, he wanted to let Frodo go and not be tempted (I sort of interpreted the Ring as a drug allegory myself, though I'd disagree that there wasn't a drug problem back then). However, if the extended version says Faramir wanted the Ring for his father, at least they saved a bit of his character.

Ash-X>> I'm pretty much all about second chances, though I have one tip. Calling people gay to insult them doesn't present yourself as smart to them, especially to those of us who are gay (And have heard it before, therefore we don't get mad either (Of course I can only speak for myself)). That action will only present you as narrow-minded to the people you insult.

Saddam's capture is wonderful news, even to an anti-war person such as myself. A few predictions:
1) Decrease in resistance - he's out of the equation, there's nobody left to support. That doesn't mean it will stop dead in its tracks, I'm sure now the priority will shift from "Bring back Saddam" to "Free Saddam." (Worried that the NSA computers are going to pick up on those two phrases out of context and log his IP).
2) Honest efforts to rebuild Iraq - now that there's no threat of Saddam coming back and undermining everything I think all parties involved in Iraq will feel better about making bolder efforts to fix up the country and pull out the U.S.

I don't think the locations of weapons of mass destruction are going to be emphasized in Saddam's interrogations mainly for the fact that, now that he's captured, the U.S. higher-ups will be less worried that Saddam has a stockpile of antrax waiting to be unloaded. I'm sure they'll ask, but it won't be a priority. I also think that the U.S. is going to take away the Iraqis' right to an Iraqi-led trial of Saddam. My guess is they'll do it with the reasons that they want Saddam to have a fair trial and the Iraqis might be too biased. Well, I'm sure that'll come up in Bush's conference here in a few minutes - but the UN is definitely out of the picture (beyond the rift between the U.S. and the UN, they're just way too slow when it comes to these things).

This isn't a blank check to reelect Bush, either. Although now his opponents are going to have to revamp their strategies (Osama's still out there, too), Bush may still lose in Nov. '04. WMD still haven't been found in Iraq, the reason we went... only history can retrospectively justify war, not those who made it, our reputation abroad is still in the hole, economic recovery is making minimal progress and will later be undermined when the effects of those tax cuts really come into play... there's still so much to do and now that Bush is going to be focused on the campaign trail *groan*.

<<Still doesn't support Bush, but is happy that Saddam's out of the equation>>

So how many folks want to bet that the 'anti-war pinkos' (Sorry, Whitbourne :) won't buy anything that Saddam might confess to in regards to the infamous Weapons of Mass Destruction?

And as far as trying Saddam is concerned, I completely agree that he should be turned over to the Iraqis. Muslim countries don't appear to have any problems administering the death penalty and that's exactly what Hussein deserves. I can't wait, though, for France and Germany to start screaming that Saddam be tried by a UN tribunal for crimes against humanity.

Leo> I did hear that. I woke up it it on the alarm clock this morning, and fed the cats over news that the DNA tests had been confirmed.
Even a vociferous anti-war pinko like me has to admit that this is good news. Saddam Hussein was - is - a tyrant who deserves to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. He's shown no qualms about killing people, his own citizens and otherwise, and many people have suffered under his regime and they deserve to find closure and retribution.
However, I hope that the Americans understand that this is a legal objective and not a military one. Mr. Hussein must be tried in an fully open, transparent, public trial, prosecuted, defended, judged and concluded by the Iraqi people and the Iraqi people alone. The press conference in Baghdad today showed a rather telling dichotomy; the questions that American journalists were asking were "how was he caught?" The Iraqi journalists, meanwhile, were asking "when will he be turned over to us and tried in an Iraqi court?" Not to mention "Does this mean the Americans will leave faster?"
And this admittedly welcome news doesn't change the other problems with this war; the incalculable damage that has been done to international relations, the dangerous precedent for military justification that has been set, and the lives, both Iraqi and Coalition, that have been lost due to sloppiness, carelessness, and stupidity. It doesn't bring improvements to the lives of Iraqi citizens who are still struggling under poverty and oppression. It won't affect the lives of those who are now being targeted by frighetened and demoralized soldiers for the destruction of their homes and the detention of their families for shady, unproven tangents of association to the insurgents. It probably won't have a lasting impact on the insurgents; if anything, it may worsen it. It doesn't answer the glaring question of where the alleged weapons of mass destruction were. It doesn't change the fact that we are selling off the infrastructure of the Iraqi people to western companies like Halliburton, who are privatizing and reorganizing basic services like electricity and water supplies so that the profits go to American companies and not the Iraqi citizens. It probably won't address the fact that this terrible dictator was supported and financed by us up until 1991.
This has the capacity to be a bright spot in an otherwise dismal and catastrophic farce, but there's still much that needs to be done and far more that must be answered for.

<<However you don't know how easy copy/paste is to do on 44 posts.>>

I'm sure he does, fella.

<<So you really don't know how smart I really am & I know how much I suck at typeing.>>

Copying and pasting isn't any way to prove your intelligence.

<<I hate it. So I'm so lazy were I don't take the damn time to use spell check & put up a post in 3 minutes instead of 6 or whatever.>>

You should take the time to do that. Not only will it help people understand what you're talking about, but it shows you care enough to take the time to think things over and deliver what you want to say in an understandable way.

<<So its not because I'm stupid, just lazy. & think about what you just said for a minute because if I was so stupit than why can I tell my computer to fire up a diffrent Ip/Id each time I come onto the net hua... so whatever.>>

A lot of people know how to "fire up a different IP/ID". It's not that hard to learn if you really want to. But then, why would you want to do that in the first place? It's unnecessary and wastes time. I don't change my IP and I don't care.

<<The 44 posts was a joke, OK GOD. It was retarted & all to but retarted I'm not. I was just playing around on my computer as I was playing Final Fantasy X-2 on my PS2, OK. Geeze.>>

"Jokes" like that, when put into a community like this, aren't welcome. It is irritating and a waste of everybody's time. If someone did something like that to you on your comment room (or whatever) then I doubt you would like it. Put yourself in our positions for a few minutes. If you think about it, you'll understand why we're angry.

To All> Sorry, if you can ever forgive me that is. Than after that I will promise to be nice even to the bullies & ignore tham, Ok. & I'll take the time to do spell check too.>>

That's good. I'd like to see it.

<<Yea I'm mad about bullies all the time & hate people who mess with me.I can ignore tham but than thay would spread ruomors about me or some crap like that, but even than I can still change a promise.>>

That's exactly how I was when I was seven years old. But if you don't give them any ammo to hit you with, then they can't do anything.

<<But if you can't forgive & forget than I can leave & go to plunty of other sites out their. I could never releace my real personality here because of people like bullies.>>

You're too paranoid about "bullies". Internet communities are the same as real life ones. No matter where you go, net or real life, you're going to find a bully. So why not just be yourself, give up the farce, because really, there's no point in keeping it up.

<<I don't know how far this plee this can go but if you all have a heart than I can show you my good side & get along.>>

I have a heart, but it's in my sock drawer. ^_~

<<Really I'm nice but not to people that are all negitive back like a newtron in a atom blowing up from a aiomic reaction, then my instinct tells me to react back & all. But I can Put that all behind me if you all can too.>>

Sure thing.

<<Ow & I can see some people say to this post.
1.Ow this guy is a sissy.
2.What a loser, this guy will never be forgiven.>>

O_o; That's not my reaction.

<<I say>Well what do you expect me to do say nothing at all.
3.He can't spell, he can't do this or that.

I say>Well I'm tired of fighting about kiddy stuff & want to act my age out of high school OK. I want to leave all that bull shit at school of being bullied & not be reminded of that in the net so, whatever you want to do is OK with me. Be nice about it or mean about it. I have better friends in real life I can talk to if you never want me around. Or if you want me to stay than I'll be happy for that.>>

High school was, and always will be, crap. And I think I speak for all of us when I say WE are tired of all this kiddy fighting stuff too. We all have things we could be doing and not wasting our time with.

<<Good night & I hope you all choose right. I'm a human too you know. Don't disippoint me who's my friends or not. Give me a last chance so that I may show you the real me.>>

Yes, you're human, so you can make mistakes. Though I don't know if you have any friends here yet, per se, I'll at least give you a second chance to make a first impression. And I hope this decision is the "right" one.

<<Not this bad Brooklyn shell but me as myself like I talk now. So give me some days & I won't ever act the same again.>>

Well, the Tolkien estate doesn't take too kindly to using the names (the people who make the Dungeons & Dragons game wound up having to change a lot of names such as "hobbits" to "halflings" and "ents" to "treants" to avoid trouble with them). As for the Oz and Narnia references that you mention, I believe that they got away with them by never actually using the names, just descriptions in such a way that people familiar with the original would know what they were talking about. (Oz might be in the public domain by now; I'm not certain.)

Mooncat: Yeah, you're right. He gives newbies a bad name. In fact, newbies are actually pretty cool when they respect the Gargoyles fandom and its many websites, like the Gargoyles Fan Fiction Archive and the numerous chatrooms and comment rooms. Maybe someday he'll know better, but right now, he's not a newbie, no... he's something else.

To all newbies out there: Being a newbie isn't about how long you have been in the fandom; it's about how well you treat others. But now you can all learn from Ash. Don't be like him, and you'll be on the road to becoming an oldie in no time.

Note on Newbies -- Being a newbie isn't in itself a bad thing. All of us start out as newbies. However Ash-X(etc) is the type of person who gives newbies a bad name. Plenty of newbies who have simple respect for the forums they visit and don't spam. Ash-X's bad behavior isn't because he's a newbie, it's because he's an Ash. For the good of all other newbies out there who are not the kind of immature spamming tantrum thrower Ash-X is, let's not refer to him as a newbie. He's gone way past newbie mistakes, and is well into the "troll with mental problems" catagory by now.

Be kind to newbies and teach them not to be an Ash.

Greg Bishansky> Well to each his own.

Todd Jensen<Incidentally, one thing in "Ask Greg" among the recent questions that scared me a little was the question as to why Greg Weisman didn't include any Tolkien material in "Gargoyles" alongside all the other legends. Evidently the questioner wasn't familiar with what's public domain and what isn't. (Granted, it's not as bad as the constant questions about why "Gargoyles" was cancelled, but still it troubles me a little.)>

It would be neat if Greg did so. Though Alan Moore got away with citing lots of public domain material in his LXG comic book and the DC Fables comic book managed to get away with making several allusions to Narnia and Oz. I wonder if they could do that on tv or is it just because the laws are less lax for print media.

To All>Maybe I should have it more like this so you all don't pass this "To All" thing, redone alittle too. So sorry, if you can ever forgive me that is. Like you all would right? Than after that I will promise to be nice even to the bullies & ignore tham, Ok. & I'll take the time to do spell check too.

Yea, I'm mad about bullies all the time & hate people who mess with me.I can ignore tham but than thay would spread ruomors about me or some crap like that, but even than I can still change, I promise. But if you can't forgive & forget than I can leave & go to plunty of other sites out their. I could never releace my real personality here because of people like bullies. I don't know how far this plee this can go but if you all have a heart than I can show you my good side & get along. Really I'm nice but not to people that are all negitive back like a newtron in a atom blowing up from a aiomic reaction, then my instinct tells me to react back & all. But I can Put that all behind me if you all can too.

Ow & I can see some people say to this post.

1.Ow this guy is a sissy.

2.What a loser, this guy will never be forgiven. Why should we!

I say>Well what do you expect me to do say nothing at all. If you have I heart you should, that is.

3.He can't spell, he can't do this or that.

I say>Whatever, well I'm tired of fighting about kiddy stuff & want to act my age out of high school OK. I want to leave all that bull shit at school of being bullied & not be reminded of that in the net so, whatever you want to do is OK with me. Be nice about it or mean about it. I have better friends in real life I can talk to if you never want me around. Or if you want me to stay than I'll be happy for that.

I'll post up a last time depending what you all say. In the next few days.

Good night & I hope you all choose right. I'm a human too you know. Don't disippoint me who's my friends or not. Give me a last chance so that I may show you the real me. Not this bad Brooklyn shell but me as myself like I talk now. So give me some days & I won't ever act the same again.

Jim R>I'm sorry you feel that way to all people who don't like to be bullied. However you don't know how easy copy/paste is to do on 44 posts. So you really don't know how smart I really am & I know how much I suck at typeing. I hate it. So I'm so lazy were I don't take the damn time to use spell check & put up a post in 3 minutes instead of 6 or whatever. So its not because I'm stupid, just lazy. & think about what you just said for a minute because if I was so stupit than why can I tell my computer to fire up a diffrent Ip/Id each time I come onto the net hua... so whatever. The 44 posts was a joke, OK GOD. It was retarted & all to but retarted I'm not. I was just playing around on my computer as I was playing Final Fantasy X-2 on my PS2, OK. Geeze.

Sweet mother of <insert deity here>! Man, this sort of thing seems to happen at least 1-2 times a year. It's unfortunate really, that some people have nothing better to do with their time. In the hour or so in which "Old Blue Eyes" wasted a few dozen brain cells, he could've written a single, highly intelligent post, and read a few newspaper articles that could've made him that much smarter.

LotR> I'm looking forward to seeing the third installment this Wednesday. However, I keep hearing people complain that Peter Jackson has already "butchered" the movie, deviating from the solid book story. I know this was true in The Two Towers, albeit only a small amount. Movies are never perfect anyway when it involves following a book. Whatever the outcome of the new movie, I believe people will be more satisfied with the ending than the Matrix Revolutions (which I also enjoyed by the way).

Books and Movies -- Most books have the edge over a movie based on a book right from the start... because the book was the original idea in it's most developed form. But in some cases the movie is better, as I consider the Witches of Eastwick to be better as a movie than a book.

I liked Jurassic Park better as a movie than the book itself, because I felt the book to be a bit on the snarky side. So full of sarcastic characters that it was hard to sympathize with any of them. Plus, as a movie, Jurassic Park just rocked with beautiful and gorgeous visuals. Just breathtaking scenes that got my heart racing and pounding far more than reading the book alone ever did. And in the case of sequels, the book sequel sucked badly, while the Movie sequel was okay (but not great).

I'm still waiting for the PERN novels to show up as a movie or tv series... *frets* They've been talking it up for ages but still no show.

Tolkien never described the Ring as "addictive" or compared it to a drug, but a few commentators have, including Tom Shippey, who brought it up in two books on Tolkien he wrote ("The Road to Middle-earth" and "J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century") - Shippey, incidentally, lives here in St. Louis, and I even had the good fortune to meet him a couple of times, once at a Tolkien convention in late 1995, once in a talk that he was giving about Tolkien at a local bookstore in 2001. Shippey brought up that Gollum really does feel a lot like a drug addict in both loving and hating the Ring.

In rereading the whole work recently, I rediscovered a scene that amuses me a little, near the end. Gandalf and the hobbits, and a few others, are on their way back to Rivendell after the overthrow of Sauron and come upon Saruman, now a homeless wanderer thanks to what the Ents did to Isengard. Gandalf makes an effort to reach out to Saruman and turn him away from his villainy, but Saruman keeps on refusing it with an almost comical stubbornness and indignation. The bit that I particularly found almost funny was when they tell him that they're offering him one last opportunity to come back and he replies that he's glad that it's the last opportunity, so that he won't have to go through all the trouble of telling them that he's not interested again.

Incidentally, one thing in "Ask Greg" among the recent questions that scared me a little was the question as to why Greg Weisman didn't include any Tolkien material in "Gargoyles" alongside all the other legends. Evidently the questioner wasn't familiar with what's public domain and what isn't. (Granted, it's not as bad as the constant questions about why "Gargoyles" was cancelled, but still it troubles me a little.)

BATTLE BEAST> Peter Jackson wanted to do "The Hobbit" first? Where are you getting this info, because it is not true. He may have entertained the idea, but he was developing LOTR as a film long before he even spoke to New Line about it.

He was originally developing LOTR as two-films for Miramax (First was going to be called Lord of the Rings and second The War of the Ring), but then Miramax decided they only wanted to make one film. Jackson felt he couldn't do the story justice in one film, and Miramax gave him a certain amount of time (a month or so) to find someone else willing to make two films. So they ended up pitching it to New Line as two films, and the executive (I forget his name) said "Who in their right mind would make two films" (which shattered both Peter and Fran Walsh) then the guy said "this is three films." Which Peter Jackson never thought he'd get... because, well what studio in their right minds would take a gamble like that... but I'm glad they did.

So, no, they never developed "The Hobbit" at all. And while New Line has the rights to make it, United Artists has the right to distribute it, and this will take time to work out.

Again, while PJ now wants to make "The Hobbit", it wasn't his intention years ago.

And yes, I know all this, because I watched the interviews and all the extras on the Extended Edition DVDs.

Miss a few days and the room goes to hell, as Greg W. once said.

LORD OF THE RINGS> TIME WAS, Peter Jackson went to Hollywood looking to film "The Hobbit." He wanted to do a grand epic film of the book, but the price tag ($100,000,000) was too high. No one would accept. Finally he found New Line Cinema. They Said, "If you are going to need $100,000,000 to film 'The Hobbit,'" they said, "why not just make all three 'LOTRs' instead? We'll give you $300,000,000 to do it." And so he did.

Peter Jackson wanted to do the Hobbit, but wound up doing the other three.

BOOKS VS. FILMS> The book is always better. Has anyone ever read Jurassic Park? The book is ten times better than the film. The film is butchered very badly; several key plots and character traits are changed; the Hammond character in the book is a money grubbing scrooge and in the film he doesn't give tinkers' hoot about money; The kids are switched around; Grant and Harding aren't married. Several key scenes in the book don't show up in the film either. (The T-Rex in the river; the Pterrodactyls, and It's a sick Stegosaurus, not a Tricerratops...) (...I can go on and on...)

The Harry Potter films follow the books VERY well; the only problem is that there is WAY too much material to film. You really notice the differences if you've read the book.

The Lord of the Rings films Follow the books almost 90% to the T. The some things that made me mad about the films are the ommision of Tom Bombadil and the fact the Arwen didn't save Frodo in "Fellowship," it was another Wizard, but other than that, I loved them. LOVED THEM.

Books have much more depth and details. In fact, it's almost a let down seeing the films because it's not what YOU imagined, it's what another person imagined.

I read the book "Hearts in Atlantis" by Stephen King, and then I saw the movie.

#1, the movie only deals with the first 1/3 of the book;

#2, it was horribly chopped up, and made no sense.

However, I read the book "Different Seasons" by Stephen King. The fisrt short story "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," was a great story, but the Movie was filmed much better and expanded on the short story (Which was only 100 pages.)

More often than not, the book is better.

That is all I will say.

QUESTION> Not true. I've read all of Tolkien's letters, and no where does he make a drug analogy. Tolkien wouldn't do that, since at the time he was writing it, drugs weren't an issue, and besides, he disliked allegory anyway.

Even Gandalf refused it. The Ring is all together evil.

Besides, in the movies, Faramir didn't desire the Ring for himself, he was sending it to his father. All he wanted was to show his quality to the father who's despised and looked down on him his entire life.

Watch the "Two Towers" Extended Edition, it's all there.

<After spending so much time setting the Ring up as this object of ultimate evil that will lure *anyone* to do it's bidding,>

Not anyone. Tolkien used the analogy of drugs for the ring. Those who use it will come under its influences, but those who wisely know of its malign influences and keep away from it would resist the ring's influences. It's not ultimate evil as an object of ultimate addiction.

<along comes this douche who not only resists the Ring, but has no interest in it whatsoever. Faramir is a better warrior than Frodo or Sam, why not let him take the thing to Mt. Doom. >

However he is not resistant to the ring's influence, but he knows of the dangers of the ring enough to try and keep its influence away from himself. He evens tell them not to show it to him and resists the desire for the ring.

<Thank Ares that the Film Makers actually decided to make Faramir a believable character. I love the books, I really do. But Tolkien's Faramir chapter has always taken me out of the story. I could never believe it. >

Just because you can't imagine a character would act like that doesn't mean that such characters don't exist.

Question

As I've said before, changing Faramir was the right thing to do. After spending so much time setting the Ring up as this object of ultimate evil that will lure *anyone* to do it's bidding, along comes this douche who not only resists the Ring, but has no interest in it whatsoever. Faramir is a better warrior than Frodo or Sam, why not let him take the thing to Mt. Doom.

Besides, Faramir didn't try to take the Ring for himself, he was sending the thing to his father Denethor. This is clearly explained in "The Two Towers" extended edition. No where did Faramir claim the Ring for himself. And in the movies he *DOES* reach the same decision as he did in the books. It just takes him a little longer to do it.

Thank Ares that the Film Makers actually decided to make Faramir a believable character. I love the books, I really do. But Tolkien's Faramir chapter has always taken me out of the story. I could never believe it. Hell, even Aragorn let Frodo go with it, because he knew it was a danger to him as well.

I like the movies, but there are a few things I couldn't forgive:

Making Faramir tempted to take the Ring ruined his character for me. He had known that the Ring was his brother's downfall.

Frodo not gettin to stab the cave troll in the foot. I know it's a minor issue, but I thought that was cool in the book.

gah! Yes, I meant Bilbo of course, since it was *his* adventure and book. These Baggins, tricksie they are *^_^* I have Frodo's name stamped too hard in my brain with Return of the King coming up in a few days.

As for starting with the Hobbit, well that book has been done creditably in cartoon form, and if people aren't already familiar with what an elf, dwarf, or dragon is before the movies then they really need more than a prequel movie as a primer.

I think they did need to go full bore into LotR so there wouldn't be any loss of momentum. Just think if the Hobbit came out and it being a completely different type of story didn't get the full treatment that LotR is getting, then if it only did good but not great at the box office it could have scarpered the LotR project.

As it is, the Hobbit can float on the LotR success instead of the LotR depending on the Hobbit doing well to get a green light.

Mooncat> "Hobbit is different from LotR in that it's all from the perspective of one character, Frodo Baggins, and is one personal adventure with the same group of companions throughout."> i think you mean Bilbo Baggins, Frodo wasn't mentioned in The Hobbit.

i read the LotR trilogy just before the first movie, mostly so i could say that i read it before the movie. at times it was difficult to keep going and now having the movies for reference its much easier, but i made it through and enjoyed it very much.

i'm glad to hear there is some truth to the rumor about The Hobbit hitting the big screen. since Fellowship came out two years ago i've been wishing The Hobbit could have its own chance. i read The hobbit when i was a young kid and i've always been more of a Bilbo fan than a Frodo fan, though now i'm just a big Samwise Gamgee fan, lol, i LOVE Sam! i kinda wish Hobbit could have been made and put out before the trilogy. it would have given alot of background on things that happened in the trilogy like the finding of the ring, Gollum, Bilbo, etc and would've slowly introduced orcs, elves, dwarves and the rest instead of suddenly throwing them at you in Fellowship. it would also have made scenes in the trilogy have more impact on the casual viewer, scenes like Sackville-Bagginses, more of Legolas's background, Gandalf's rescue by the eagle, the finding of Balin's tomb, and having Gloin at Elrond's counsel of the ring.

Tolkien - When I was small the cartoon for the Hobbit captivated me, and I went out and read the book, which I adored. Hobbit is different from LotR in that it's all from the perspective of one character, Frodo Baggins, and is one personal adventure with the same group of companions throughout.

I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy too, but it is a frustrating read at times. I started reading it and it was so long and complex it took a few trials at getting through it, but then I was nine when I finally did read the whole thing straight through. After that I read it about once a year until I was in my mid twenties and couldn't spare the days it would take to read straight through. It really does work better doing it in a gulp, so you don't forget the details, at least it did for me, which is why I am loath to try reading it spread over several days with Real Life stuff.

I've now comfortably forgotten enough of the books (details blurred) so I can go to the movies and it's very fresh to me. I'm going to wait till after RotK to reread the trilogy again. I know there are changes, I can feel them as I watch, but since my memory is fuzzed those changes don't jump out at me the way they do for those who have the books fresh in their minds.

When the first movie of the current trilogy came out, I sat and cried when it started. Not because I was sad, but because it was immediately apparent this was going to be GREAT, and there are no books that deserve a great rendition more than the Lord of the Rings. Even not having read them in years, it's a series that has held it's hand on my heart since the first time I'd read through it as a child.

Aaron> Just because I didn't like the books doesn't mean characters in my stories can't. :-) It wasn't until after I'd written and posted it that somee told me about all of the unintentional LOTR references in that story. Some of them I'd meant, obviously, but they were based on a pretty superficial understanding of the books. The "one ring to rule them all" rhyme and the name "Mordor" were pretty much all that I knew. I think I'll wait five or ten years and then try to read LOTR again. Apparently everyone has to read these books sometime. I don't know if I'll ever read the Simillarion, though.
What the heck am I doing up this early? Man, six hours ago I was pounding back whiskey sours listening to a friend play bass in a rock band. He was playing at this yuppie martini bar called the Velvet Olive and the whole med class was there, most of us wearing T-shirts and blue jeans and getting funny looks from the investment bankers out for a night on the town. I love Halifax.

Tolkien> I absolutely LOVED Tolkien's books, but I will admit that I had never read them before seeing the first two LOTR movies. After seeing the movies, the books were so enjoyable, because I had a face from the movies to attach to every name in the book ... for me, the books would have been *so* difficult to keep up with and follow without having faces to attach to all the names, and scenes to attach to all the long scenery descriptions. However, I will agree that Return of the King was one of the best books I have *ever* read ... definitely the best of the three books. I don't know if I've ever been so into a book before, and I was moved by the story and finished that book in one weekend. :)

I've enjoyed reading the discussion about Tolkien and his family ... I never knew about all the craziness there! So interesting. :)

I have to agree with Whit and Alex here - I did not enjoy the books as much as the movies. I won't go so far as to say I hated them, they weren't too bad, but they are definately not books I would choose to read again and again. I will say this though - The Return of the King is the best of his works. I read that one in a few days instead of the two weeks each it took for the first two, and I actually enjoyed most of it.

Whitbourne> "Am I the only person here who can't stand the books?"

...No, I have to come clean - I hate Tolkien. I'm sorry, but I do, I've faked interest for too long.

I read the books a long time ago and hated them then, reread them more recently (before the movies) and, well, I can understand why so many like the books, but I can't stand them, and mainly for the reasons you listed.

Maybe trying to read FotR at a gas station wasn't the best time, but to be honest I don't know when is.

I read in the papers yesterday that one of Tolkien's great nephews actually has a role as an extra in "The Return of the King". I can't recall exactky what it's as, though I think it's either a Gondorian or an elf. Pretty sure it's the former.
Am I the only person here who can't stand the books? I HATE Tolkien's writing style. Hate it. Way too much exposition and far, far too much description of the scenery for my taste. I guess that's one reason why some people like it, as it draws them into the world, but to me, it's just
irritating.
Of course, it didn't help that I tried to read "The Fellowship of the Ring" while stranded in a gas station in a blizzard, so I wasn't in the best of moods. Some summer I'll have to try again.

CKayote: That sounds highly unlikely. A second language is usually learned in school and it's highly unlikely that they'd misspell simple words, such as "tried." Of course, if they learned it by listening to it or online, then yeah, they could misspell words like that. But it's still highly unlikely.

I know because I'm living proof. I learned English in school and on the Internet and I don't misspell like that. :P I've seen grammar and spelling errors (such as his) from native English speakers, in most cases anyway. I know Spanish speakers who have trouble speaking and writing English, but it's forgiven because it's not their native language, and they ARE trying.

Of course, some people are just lazy, and that's acceptable. But really, if you're going to write fanfic of any kind and for any universe, then at least remember that you're writing for an audience and not just for yourself; at least try to make it as clear and understandable as possible. If the reader is willing to give your story a chance, then at least TRY to be considerate and not give them a headache while trying to understand your work.

And, this is only my opinion, but he doesn't strike me as someone who doesn't speak English natively. Maybe it's just me?

And there ya have it, my two cents. I probably contradicted myself anyway because of my grammar errors. :P Oh, well...

And we really do need more Thailog pictures in this comment room. How many Thailog fans in this room agree with me? ;)

Christopher Tolkien has admitted to having "filled in" bits of the Silmarillion near the end, based on his father's notes - but feels now a bit troubled over having done so.

I'd heard about the family disputes over the movie as well, and they do seem to be getting almost as fierce as the fighting in Tolkien's works.

I seriously doubt that the Silmarillion is filmable (individual parts of it, perhaps, but not the whole book). Not when you consider the scale (as in, a whole bunch of Balrogs serving Morgoth instead of just one in Moria). Though I'm convinced that the first movie's portrayal of Sauron at the beginning, where he's felling the Last Alliance with his mace, was derived from Morgoth's duel with Fingolfin in "The Silmarillion".

You are oversimplfying the matter. There was bad blood between Christopher and his son long before this issue. This was probably just the literal straw that broke the camel's back. Furthermore you haven't heard Chris's side. The only one who has bothered to speak about this is Simon who was also the one that brought this issue into the public's eye.

<I hope it does, as it would serve that glorified filing clerk right.... and that's all he is, he just edited "The Sil", his dad wrote it. >

I would not go into making such unsubstantiated claims when we don't know how much he contributed to the final version of the Silmarillion.

Question

TODD> I've actually beek keeping up with all of this. New Line Cinema does have the rights to make "The Hobbit", the Tolkien Estate really has no say in the matter either way as J.R.R. himself sold the movie rights for both "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" well before he passed away. The only real snag is that while New Line has the rights to produce the movie, United Artists has the distribution rights, so when they get all those settled, i'm sure New Line will get on it. But right now, Peter Jackson is doing a re-make of "King Kong", and while he wants to make "The Hobbit", I think he also wants a break from Middle-earth... and I don't blame him, he's been working on it for seven years.

As for Christopher Tolkien and the Tolkien Estate, the only thing they have control over whether or not is made into a movie is "The Silmarillion", which Christopher Tolkien will never sell the rights for. Oh, and Christopher Tolkien from what I've read has never watched the films and has no desire too.

But also, just because Christopher Tolkien says something, doesn't mean it's what the whole family thinks. His own son, Simon Tolkien supports the films, went to the premere, and felt the Tolkien Estate should officially support the films... this caused his father to disown him. And Simon's cousin (Christopher's nephew and other grandson of J.R.R.) Royd Tolkien, actually makes a cameo in ROTK as a Gondorian soldier.

Personally, if the wild boar case doesn't raise an eyebrow, I think Christopher disowning his own son (and he won't even visit his grandchildren) for publically supporting the films proves that the man is a complete and utter nutcase. BTW, as soon as he passes on, I am certain the rights to "The Silmarilion" will be sold, and while I think that would be impossible to film, I hope it does, as it would serve that glorified filing clerk right.... and that's all he is, he just edited "The Sil", his dad wrote it.

Cross-Posted

Ok so here's the MiST Song I want to put in any future MiSTs, anyone want to help me improve it?

In the not-too-distant future-
Next Sunday, A.D.-
There were gargoyles and a halfling,
Not too different than you or me.
The Gargoyles battled Demona,
Fighing evil and bigotry;
Until the day she captured them (and Regis)

Demona had an evil plan
So she shot them into space.
We'll send them cheesy fanfics,
The worst ever made.
Regis says when you got lemons,
You make lemonade.

Now keep in mind they can't control
Which fanfics they have to read,
Because Demona wants to torture,
And what better way than this?

Character roll-call-
Angela
"Mother, why can't you be good?"
Broadway
"I'll get the popcorn!"
Lexington
"Not again!"
Regis!
"Mmmmm, Broadway!"

If you're wondering how they eat and breathe
And other science facts,
Just repeat to yourself it's just a MiST,
You should really just relax
For Mystery Gargoyles Theater 3000.

Of course the 3 Gargoyles characters in the Roll Call will vary.

Hmmmmm...

Ok I used to be a Dragonball Z Fan, until I noticed that it would have the same plot ninety percent of the time. At that point it got very very boring.

Cowboy Bebop, great anime, far superior to Dragonball Z. If some announcer says that it's the best fighting anime in the world, then most likely they haven't seen Ninja Scroll or Vampire Hunter D.

I would have posted the MiST that Mara Cordava did of one of my fan fiction stories on the "Web Site" option of this site, unfortunately it's Adult-Rated and there's no way I'm linking it if kids have access to it. (I'm assuming kids would have access to this comment room)

As far as MiSTing is concerned, it improved my writing ability when Mara MiSTed two of my stories, and it had me laughing my ass off!

Oh, before I forget; Greg, Cyrway does wite MiSTs, though mostly Transformers. She wrote a freaking huge MiST of a long SNAD epic that involved, I kid you not, Megatron falling desperately in love with a human girl who could speak with wolves and who made Optimus Prime see the error of his ways by showing him that megatron could love. Starscream was particularly sappy; in the sequel it turmned out that Starscream was megatron's son.

Cyrway was, thankfully, merciless. And the last I heard, the original author thought the whole thing was hilarious. Most people take it in stride.

Re: bullying; I take it you mean the Ash_X MiST?
By all means, I think that new authors should be cut a little bit of slack and be encouraged to improve with constructive criticism, and to be honest, MiSTing is a pretty savage way of doing it. I'd be very, very wary of MiSTing a first time author.
But I also read the story that the MiST was based on, and...well, it's sort of hard to find candidates that deserve such treatment more. The author seemed to have an aiding hatred for spelling and grammar, not to mention character and the spirit of the show. While I'm sure there were more delicate ways of pointing that out, it's hard to see where the author - who was also giving the impression that he considered his stories to be the greatest thing written since the gospel - showed any interest in wanting honest criticism and feedback.
It's a tough call, I know. Ideally people's feelings wouldn't be hurt in such a forum, but people are people, and people, when confronted with bad writing, tend to react accordingly. And while it would be nice to think that everyone can get a pat on the head for effort, not everyone's that nice. Look at the reviews for "Yellow Dog" by Martin Amis, coming out in Britain. Some of those are friggin' nasty, and this is an established author.
I've always been a bit troubled with MiSTs, especially if they pull no punches and take brutal aim...but I'd hardly consider it bullying. It's an indelicate but honest response to a piece of work meant to attack bad writing, not bullying an author, and perhaps the best course of action would be to take it as such, move on, and try again.
Writing is a nasty business, both original and fanfic, and a bad review - which, in essence, a MiST is - doesn't count as bullying unless it's blatantly personal. A first time author who gets MiSTed might deserve sympathy and could probably benefit from a gentler approach, but in the end, if you can't take a bad review then you ought not to write.
And in the end, hurt feelings are better than censorship.

Re "The Hobbit" - I've read that the big snag that Peter Jackson's facing is that the Tolkien estate isn't too thrilled with the notion of a movie being made out of "The Hobbit", in light of how it felt about the movies (Christopher Tolkien - Tolkien's son, who edited the "Silmarillion" - was particularly unhappy about them). One amusing piece of trivia: Christopher Tolkien, in order to cut down on unwanted visitors (as in overly enthusiastic Tolkien fans) keeps wild boar in the garden. That definitely strikes me as a good way of discouraging uninvited guests, though an unorthodox one.

Sure, a "friend" of yours was flamed... actually he wasn't, just a couple of guys wrote up a MiST of a really bad fanfic that you... opps, I mean your friend "Ash X" wrote. Todd--Thanks for the tip about Tolkien's Father Christmas book. It sounds like one I'll enjoy reading to the kids. I looked around on amazon, and it appears there are two editions of it; the revised edition contains letters not included in the original printing. The reviews there were also quite positive about it.

Matt--A movie version of "The Hobbit" done as well as Peter Jackson has done on the trilogy would be wonderful, but I've heard that he isn't interested in doing it at this time. But that's hardly "official" information.

And yes, I like girls with wings too.
But don't tell my girlfriend. She'll tease me about it until she finds something else to tease me about.

Good Morning Thursday...

You know I never heard anybody menson a "H" spell in the gargoyles show. Only from Greg, but before that I thought thay could do the stone thing from the begining in their DNA.

I would be funny to see a episode like that wouldn't you think so? Or just don't even anser me at all if you don't like that idea. I like the show enough to respect gargoyles in that way. I don't know if evey of you all are like me wich like to see that kind of thing with garg females. But I would like to know if I'm the only 1 out their. If I'm not than thats good, but if I am than your all spechizists. I know people draw this stuff in the adult gargoyles site but do thay really mean that thay like drawing that or what. I would like to know how you all think please.

No hard feelings are intended of this, I would just like a strate anser from some people that like fake sci-fi stuff & aleins. Things of that nature I know is fake but who cares we all still watch the gargoyles show when we all are about 20 or 30 years old or older even right?

Thats all your gettin out of me... & thanks if eneybody ansers this post but if you don't than I'll see how it is & understand!? Bye.

I hope that it works this time; unfortunately, I forgot most of what I was going to post last night, and am having to reconstruct this from scratch.

At any rate, yep, the original Saint Nicholas was famous for his gift-giving; there's one particular story about him giving three young women from a poverty-stricken family three bags of gold, particularly since their father was about to make them take up a life of prostitution to make ends meet. (I think, but am not certain, that in one version of the story, he left the bags in their stockings, which could explain where the "presents in stockings" part of the Santa legend comes from.) He was also said to have brought three children who had been murdered back to life.

Incidentally, J. R. R. Tolkien wrote a series of stories (in the form of letters to his children) about the adventures of Father Christmas (the English equivalent of Santa Claus), with a fairly comical tone about them; in his version, Father Christmas is saddled with a well-intentioned but somewhat klutzy polar bear for a chief assistant, who was almost constantly getting into trouble (as in, turning on the Aurora Borealis full blast, climbing up onto the North Pole to retrieve Father Christmas's hat which had blown up onto the top and falling off into Father Christmas's house with the top of the Pole and making a big hole, or attempting to carry a humungous load of toys downstairs all at once) - he was also plagued with periodic attempts by the goblins to raid his toyshop. The letters were posthumously published and would hopefully be available in good bookstores this time of year (not only thanks to the proximity of Christmas, but also the upcoming third "Lord of the Rings" movie). They're quite funny.

Santa> In Gargoyles?! Eh...don't know. I see him as human figure though, not some immortal. Perhaps just a special mortal being through some influence of magic. Sort of like those old Christmas specials you'd see on TV. I could see a Santa episode though. You know, just one of those things they could toss into the rest of the series. But make it clever and witty in some way too, so it's memorable.

Humility spell> I wasn't aware such a thing existed! News to me I guess. But now that it's been mentioned, it kind of makes sense. Although I have a hard time bending my mind around the whole idea of property turning to stone along with the gargoyle. Wasn't there a few episodes where Hudson's sword remains metal when Hudson is stone? Or are we talking animation glitches? Or maybe one could argue it has something to do with the current state of mind of the gargoyle just before it turns to stone. I don't know, just another thought.

Sorry about that; a post that I tried to make kept on failing to post, and I was afraid that somebody had used up all the space on Station 8 again; Question's last post (which was an interesting one, by the way) proved that it wasn't. It must have been a momentarily glitch. However, I'll have to save what I was going to say for tomorrow now. Sorry about that.

And here from the mind of Neil Gaiman. A different interpretation of Santa.

Nicholas Was...

older than sin, and his beard could grow no whiter. He wanted to die.

The dwarfish natives of the Arctic caverns did not speak his language, but conversed in their own, twittering tongue, conducted incomprehensible rituals, when they were not actually working in the factories.

Once every year they forced him, sobbing and protesting, into Endless Night. During the journey he would stand near every child in the world, leave one of the dwarves' invisible gifts by its bedside. The children slept, frozen into time.

He envied Prometheus and Loki, Sisyphus and Judas. His punishment was harsher.

Ho.

Ho.

I see a Gargs Santa as being dark, un-Christmasy, maybe tragic figure. I have some ideas the waythat could work, but
1)I don't to spoil the spirit
and
2)It would be original ideas right and left. Poor Greg W. if happened to chance upon the board this week.

Up until I read about that clothes spell, I had always wondered stuff turned to stone with Gargs.
I figured it was an oversite, or put in by S&P to prevent any psuedo-nudity scenes.

Santa Claus> i can easily picture "Santa" being in Gargoyles, but i doubt he'd be much like the pop-culture Santa we have in malls and Coca-Cola products. i think he is probably human, or at least WAS probably human. the ghost/spirit idea is very possible. i doubt he'd come into the series bearing toys and gifts for the gargoyles. more likely he'd do as St. Nicholas did and bring money for the poor and food for the hungry, etc. i think that is far more generous and wonderful than giving Timmy a toy truck or Sally a doll. hopefully thats how the Gargoyles staff would portray him.
although the idea of Hudson as Santa does have its own appeal, lol!

Humility Spell> yeah, the spell was originally intended for the gargoyles clothing, but it ended up meaning whatever a gargoyle was in contact and THAT THEY CONSIDERED THIER PROPERTY. obviously, gargoyles consider their own clothes and jewelry to be their own property, and their weopans too. if Hudson considers his sword his property, it'll turn to stone, if he thinks of it as a Viking's property it'll remain metal. same goes for the Scrolls of Merlina nd many other objects throughout the series. Hudson didn't consider the scrolls his property so they didn't become stone with him. sometimes i wonder if the spell has a size limit on it. if Goliath considered the Avalonian skiff to be his skiff would it have turned to stone? what if a gargoyle considered a wooden building to be his property, would it turn to stone??? i don't know, but i doubt it. anyone else have any thoughts?

For the clothes turning to stone subject. I also forget what it was but only the clothes were to turn, but if you watch a few eps they also did make other objects turn to stone with them depending on what it was, I cant think of any at the time since I'm kinda still sleeping. But I do remember the ep with Hudson and the scroll of Merlin where Hudson changed into stone yet the scroll did not ( sry can't remember ep) And in City of stone Fox changed into stone with everything she was touching minus the helicopter.

Santa as a child of Oberon.. Not likey, if he was that would make his wife and his workers children as well. Santa was originallyorginally an elf until in 19jkhfkya the Coa-Cola company changed him into the Santa that we know today. and as for thier not aloud to interfear with human relations, I think the X-mas thing changed , hell it's a world wide thing now, true it didn' really change our lives, but in a way it did.
Ok I'm going back to bed now, before all the junk I wrote starts to make sense.

Saint Nicholas was actually from Asia Minor, the bishop of a small town in the southern portion of it called Myra.

The humility spell was a spell cast upon the gargoyle race by an advisor to Caesar Augustus (the first Emperor of Rome) who wrote the Grimorum Arcanorum - the original Magus. It caused gargoyles' clothing to turn to stone with them (at Caesar Augustus's request, since he was displeased with the way that gargoyle clothes ripped apart when they were awakening from their stone sleep, leaving them in the nude; he was making a big - ultimately unsuccessful - effort to restore some sense of morality to public life in the Roman Empire).

Santa Claus - I don't really see Santa Claus as being one of Oberon's children. After all, wasn't he originally based on Saint Nicholas? Since we've already seen the Captain and Hakon's spirits running around I picture the Garg version of Santa as being the ghost of the historical St. Nick.

Having just read Todd's question about the humility spell, I find myself trying to remember just what it was.

I know it was made by a Roman on the Gargoyles and it has to do with the way clothing et al turns to stone or not. (Eh... I think...)

Can some one fill in the gaps for me?

Thanks!

Actually, the Scrooge thing is a good tie in to gargoyles. I know every show has tried it, but picture Xanatos getting visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present & Future...or maybe Demona. one or the other, it would make for an interesting viewpoint on the characters-getting them to take a better look at themselves and how their evil actions affect those around them.

As for Santa-just dress Hudson up in a red suit and have Bronx as a reindeer with cheezy fuzzy antlers and Lex as santa's elf helper. ^_~ And don't forget some mistle toe(SP) for Goliath & Elisa and Angela and Broadway.

Ok, there's my evil thought for the night.

Todd:

Don't know. But all things are true...

Seriously, I was thinking of the whole christmas spirits of past, present, and future appearing with Santa, who might just be a guide or counselor/therapist. Then the better question is, who would have the most need for those three(or four), regardless if he/she thinks otherwise...

And have some crazy wish of getting Patrick Stewart(or Steward?) to voice Santa. Wasn't St.Nick Irish or Scotish? Or am I just completely wrong...

I could see Santa being in the series if it was more of the Life and Adventures of Santa Claus type (the most recently animated one). That Santa Claus just seemed to be more realistic. I would also think Santa Claus would be fae. If Greg could tie Shakespeare into Gargoyles, and do it so well, I have no doubt Santa Claus would have been done just as well, perhaps even easier.

G2198> Zafiro seems too young for Demona, plus no matter how redeemed Demona may be, i suspect she'll still always go for a bad boy... and a book-smart cultured young gargoyle doesn't seem too bad boy.. though i could be wrong.

One thing that I sometimes find myself wondering this time of year is this.

Greg Weisman admitted once at "Ask Greg" that, if "Gargoyles" had continued long enough, Santa Claus would have shown up, and he'd even had a story planned about the gargoyles meeting Santa. What I find myself wondering is just what that story would have been like (especially since I still feel a bit staggered at the thought of Santa Claus fitting into a serious animated adventure-drama series - although, as Aris Katsaris pointed out, he was able to fit into Terry Pratchett's "Hogfather").

Wondering of the future of Disney Animation Team. Soon they are suppost to announce what they plan to do with the animation department of Florida. They have had it shut down for a while now. Last I was there was at least a year and a half ago, the tour was still on, but I didn't see any animators, though it appeared that HAD been working on Lilo and Stitch. I know a chunk of full length feature animation is done in Cali. And Paris, Japan, and Australia mostly handle the sequels and shows. And I do know the first and so far only movie to be completely made in Florida was Mulan. Been a while since then. With the shake-up of Roy leaving and Disney live action movies are surpassing their animated movies, I wonder what is in store next. It will be very sad if they close down the studio here for good. All the animators and other crew lose their jobs or are forced to the other studios across the world.

Okay… *glances around at the excessive rubbish littered around the comment room* lets change the tone in here a bit and nothing changes the tone like a good change in subject. ;)
Anyway, so I was reading over the G2198 proposal and noticed that
"NOTE: Eventually, the large cast will be split in half. Nokkar will take Demona, Zafiro, Guardian and LXM-1057 into space to hit the Space-Spawn where they live."
Just a small thought of speculation; don't whether this has come up before but has anyone else thought that Zafiro may be Demona's love interest in G2198. This is pure speculation and the only clues which give me this impression are that are the only gargoyles (that we know of) that go off into space to attack the Space-Spawn home world or galaxy or whatever.
And also they are both the only gargoyles which are not subject to stone sleep during the day. (Actually that last point might be the reason as to why they're the only gargoyles on Nokkar's ship).

In other news, Greg's answered some new questions (including one particular question which caused quite a bit of controversy over the past week). Anyway, I noticed in that question that Greg said;
"IT [the praying gargoyle] TOOK 60 YEARS TO REGENERATE"
This got me wondering. Do you think that the length of regeneration is affected by how holy or magical the 'Holy ground' is?

Once upon a time, I found this excellent little chat room to discuss my favorite things with people who had similar interests. For a while, everything was just peachy.....then.....some newbies came in.

Hey, it's all good. Different strokes for different folks. There were still plenty of old friends to chat with......then.....more newbies came in.

Pretty soon, the room turned into a big mess. Old friends got fed up and left. Even new friends from first batch of newbies left.....and then I left.

I pop in every now and then, but never see anything from an old friend. Just more garbage. I left out the name of that room on purpose. Now, I don't post much in here, but I do visit often to read posts. I'm starting to see some garbage in the corners of this room. Just hope it doesn't produce more garbage.

Okay, I really didn't want to get involved with the whole "Does DBZ suck or not" arguement, but this is getting really immature. Those of you who LIKE DBZ, fine. Those of you who DON'T, that's okay too. Just quit arguing about it! I've been sitting and observing you guys fighting about this. I've almost been reluctant to have any more to do with this chat room because this particular agruement is STUPID (and YES is really IS, people!) and has nothing to do with the reason this chatroom exists, which is for the show Gargoyles. Cripes, can't we just talk about something that isn't going to make everybody go after everybody else? Why is that so difficult?

Well, I'm pretty sure you've just insulted all the best artists in the fandom out there.

My brother used to be a huge fan of DBZ, huge. Yes, I've seen a lot of it, and I know that is sucks.

Dude, there is no hope for you.

Greg Bishansky>Also Slayers was made by the team that created DBZ & DBGT so I don't think you know what your freakin talking about MAN! Cowboy Bebop looks ok but not even close to DBZ... Now you want crap, now what about "Knights of the old Zodeak", "Samiri Jack", & crap like that that makes me sick. "InuYasha" is the 3rd best...

DBZ dose have a story line too... But it only has to do with aliens wanting to destroy earth of get a wish from the Dragon Balls, & it's supprizingly good too with its drama & action... Have you even seen a good battle on their at all?

Why you ask... Because the fights get better & better as the saga goes on & the abilitys of the people get better as thay get stronger. 1st thay are as weak as humans than at the end become super beings that can blow up freakin planets at a very thought, that power is so out their & diffrent it blows all away that is anime.

Thats all I will say for now!

1st!

I'd like some opinions on this, if one is so inclined...

I'm making my 12th dvd of the series which contains the Avalon 3-parter. Everything on the dvd is ready to ..)create, I got the episodes, the chapter points, the menus, the music....everything. But, for some reason, I'm wanting to tinker with this one. I've got some bonus features for it right now. These are, the "Previously on Gargoyles..." segments from part 2 and 3 (the recaps for part 1 and 2) and a slideshow featuring 22 images from the mini-series. I'm not too sure how the slideshow will look on tv, but it looks great on the computer monitor. I had the option of putting it to music and I did just that (put in a nice instrumental piece from The Last of the Mohicans). I want more tho.

I'm thinking about making two small files containing the footage that Toon Disney took out. I'm thinking these will only be a few seconds in length and am wondering if I should go to the trouble. What do you folks think?

These files would be on the bonus features menu and not part of the episodes. I thought about doing the last 2 parts from my original tapes, but there is a WORLD of difference in the quality (mainly the audio...it's BAAAaaaaDD). I have done a couple episodes from the original tapes, but they are episodes with really noticable edits (noticable to me anyway). Episodes like City of Stone 1, Leader of the Pack, and The Price.

What do y'all think? Do I have too much time on my hands? Should I just burn the thing and move on? Should I quit talking about this dvd stuff altogether? This inquiring mind wants to know.
