Plus it still does not answer my question why are there gargoyles on the catherdrals of europe.
The basic use was to keep away evil sprits if I remember correctly so could it be that some of the clans maybe a few stragglers lived.

dee

As will I, Personally I find it kinda boring to have all the clans be from either Scotland, Asia and south America what about Europe? It might be neat to see.
dee

Todd> thanks for looking that up. clears a lot of things being specualated. from how i read that statement i interpret it to mean that Rome had no Clan, but the Roman Empire at the time had at least one Clan. it was "largely" gargoyle free, not completely gargoyle free.
so why the Humilty Spell? something happened that we are unaware of. there has to be an in-universe reason the spell was cast. if its not cuz there was naked gargoyles running around Rome, then why?
i don't know. i know i've read a few fan-fic speculation ideas over the years, such as the arrival of the Timedancer in Rome. unfortunatly, we may not know for a long time, maybe never.
when Ask Greg reopens, however, i plan to submit a question along these lines though.

Hey, just dropping in with an update... AMGC has been updated and the September topic has gone to voting. Voting will run all month, because of the late start, but don't wait!
There will be no October topic, that will all restart, hopefully, in November.
If you don't know how to get to AMGC and you are over 18, ask someone for a private link - we won't link it in a PG13 room. :)

And don't forget to vote at MGC either, and THAT link is in my name.

Thanks for all the support. ^_^

kess - [< MGC! You like it, remember??]

I looked up Greg's original comments about the Humility Spell, and this was what he had to say about the presence of gargoyles in the Roman Empire:

[And though Rome, as a "civilized" nation was largely Gargoyle-free, the occasional gargoyle was brought before him.]

"Him" meaning Caesar Augustus, of course.

Now, "the occasional gargoyle" suggests, not the presence of a clan, but rather cases of sporadic incidents where a gargoyle was presented to the Emperor (and note that Greg wrote "the occasional gargoyle" - singular rather than plural). The word choice here suggests not a clan native to Rome, but that sometimes a gargoyle would be brought into Augustus's presence, a la American Indians being sometimes brought to European courts during the time of Columbus and afterwards, say. This is just speculating from a few words, of course (probably only Greg can settle this, and I doubt that he'll want to anytime soon, now that he's preparing to tell new "Gargoyles" stories via the comic), but the precise nature of those words suggests something more along the lines of, from time to time, a gargoyle being acquired by the Romans (maybe through trade, maybe through the spoils of war) and brought to Augustus, rather than a whole clan living in Rome.

"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Hi All!

Todd: I have to agree with Matt here - there had to be a significant Gargoyle presence in Rome to bring the issue of the Humility spell up at all.

Matt: There's about a century between the Early church reforming under the Emperor Constantine and the fall of Rome. Plenty of time. Also it could be considered that the unreformed church - basicly just a collection of independant churches - was more likely to befriend Gargoyles, as each church would decide such matters for itself.

Ckayote: Missed you yesterday:). I don't think that the Roman Gargoyles could have been the ancestors of the New Olympian clan, as it seems to me that New Olympus would have cut itself off from the rest of the would at the end of the 'Mythic Age' - well before the Rise of Rome.

Well, enough from me.
Goodnight All!

Jonathan

Good point matt. From what I read of the spell it seems that Augustus had to have been annoyed with naked gargoyles to do what he did. Which means there had to have been a Clan based in Rome. Perhaps after the fall of Rome they fled to Island of Capri in the Bay of Naples. Which was used by the emperors of Rome.
I always thought I guess it's a creativaty bug that it might be intresting to have Brooklyn meet fall in love with a break up with a gargoyle who is from that clan.

dee

Todd makes some very good points and brings up some thing i had not considered. however, i still think there was Roman Clan.

ok, Greg says that there were few gargoyles in the Roman Empire at the time of Augustus and the Humility Spell. well, thats a very subjective statement. few gargoyles compared to what? now? the Stone Age? the Far East? the world? we don't know what he was relating that statement to. you could easily look at the British Isles in 1994 and say there are few gargoyles living there, and yet there are two full Clans alive and well there. 1000 years ago there were more Clans in the British Isles and almost certaintly there were even more in the Stone Age and before. so saying there are few gargs there now is accurate... from a certain point of view.
so, back to Rome. when Greg said there were few gargoyles in the Roman Empire, there could still have been several Clans here and there. and lets say there were only as few as one Clan. it seems most likely that Clan would be based in Rome. heres why:
if gargoyles and their lack of clothing was going to become enough of an issue to Augustus that he has the most powerful magic-user alive at the time cast a spell across space and time you would think Augustus is seeing more then one gargoyle every now and then. gargoyles must've been (annoyingly) breaking out of their clothes left and right every evening to cause such an immense spell to be cast. furthermore, Augustus had to be somewhat familiar with this Clan because if they were only being brought before him as gifts like animals then why would he care if they didn't wear clothes? when Charlamagne was given that elephant he did not worry about what he was going to clothe it in. gargoyles could talk to Augustus and he found talking to naked being distasteful, thus the Humility Spell. if they were only in his court from time to time as animals, he would not have cared. a whole Clan of naked gargoyles would irk him though.

Greg's statement rings true even if the Roman Clan was a full Clan, but perhaps they were much smaller, more like the present day Avalon Clan. the point is, there was a permenant residence of gargoyles in Rome, there had to be. other gargs (from Egypt, Persia, Greece, France, England, Scotland, Ireland and maybe the far east) were perhaps brought to Rome from time to time, but the only logical explanation for the Humility Spell is a full-time Roman Clan.

feel free to disagree, i'd love to hear others thoughts on this topic. if i'm not mistaken, we've never discussed this topic here in all these years, so its very interesting.

matt - [ewoks11@hotmail.com]
"Do not despise the day of small beginnings." -Zechariah 4:10

I'm not certain that there was an actual Roman clan. Greg Weisman's description of the Magus's spell of humility says that the Roman Empire had hardly any gargoyles in it (due to its being so taken over by humans), but that occasionally a gargoyle was sent to Rome to be presented to Caesar Augustus. Since the Roman Empire was a very large piece of territory, stretching in Augustus's time from Gaul all the way to Egypt and Judaea, I strongly suspect that the gargoyles that were brought before Augustus could have come from many different parts of the world, maybe even from outside the boundaries of the Roman Empire (such as foreign kings whose lands adjoined Roman territory sending a gargoyle to Augustus as an unusual present - kind of like how Haroun al-Raschid sent Charlemagne an elephant as a gift). The gargoyles in Augustus's household could easily have been of mixed origins rather than from all one clan.

(Just where they came from I won't try to guess. The only clans that we know of - apart from the New Olympian clan, whose exact location is unknown; New Olympus was cutting itself off from the outside world at the time, anyway - were in the British Isles, the Far East - Japan, China, and Korea, and Mesoamerica - Guatemala. The Far East and Mayan gargoyles would obviously have been too far away to have been likely to find their way into imperial Rome, though a case could be made for a Far Eastern gargoyle or two showing up - there was very limited trade between Rome and China, and a gargoyle could conceivably have been brought to Rome via the Silk Road. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that a human British tribe could have sent a gargoyle or two from the clans that would later on develop into the familiar Scottish and English clans to Rome for the purpose of trade; Britain hadn't been conquered by Rome as yet, but there was a good deal of economic interaction between the Britons and the Romans in Augustus's reign, and the Britons could have decided to export a couple of gargoyles in exchange for some luxury goods. And there could also have been gargoyles brought from other "frontier regions" whose clans later on became extinct.)

Also, we don't know how long the gargoyle presence in Rome lasted, and whether there were enough gargoyles in Augustus's household, or enough of a male-female balance among them, to ensure descendants. For all that we know, there might not have been enough gargoyles there to establish a rookery and hatchlings for future generations. Certainly we don't have enough information to let us know one way or the other.

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Maybe if the Roman clan was large some would have died in the massicure however they like what was said below me may have emigrated to other parts of europe and Italy (there are some isolated isalnds off the coast)they could have gone there as well but I figure that they were wiped out later.
If The Roman Clan did indeed look human then perhaps some not alot could have hidden in the monestaries.
About Saint Frances, He is one of the only people whom I whould beleve would have a relationship with Gargoyles. But to really answer this question we need greg

dee

if the Roman Clan was indeed wiped out between 400 and 500 that doesn't leave much time for them to get friendly with the early Church.
i would think that the Roman Clan was a larger Clan in its heyday and as it was destroyed Clan members emigrated to other parts of Europe, maybe not though. obviously the only place descendants of Roman gargs could still be living is New Olympus, but we still don't know where that is, maybe its not as close to Greece and Italy as we suspect. the first colonists would not want to be discovered and indeed they were not until recently so the island had to be pretty far away...
i've often had a creativity demon that New Olympus IS Atlantis, a place of high technology and democracy and the first Olympians somehow tricked the humans on the island that it was being destroyed so they'd leave the island. i would think Atlantis was bigger then New Olympus is though, so maybe not. of course we havn't seen exactly how big Olympus is and perhaps the Olympians did sink part of the island in their ruse to e vict the humans...? i dunno, just a train of thought ramble...

Hi All!

It's been a while since I posted here.
A long, long while :)

Roman Clan: I can't see them surviving the Sack of Rome. Assuming the invader didn't simply smash them during the day, then they'd have tried to save people during the slaughter and been killed in the general massacre.
They'd have been wiped out sometime between 400-500Ad.

Short post today.

goodnight All!

Jonathan

Maybe the Roman clan were the ancestors of the New Olympian clan?

Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75@gmail.com]

i've gotten the impression from Greg that the Roman Clan was extinct even before the Wyvern Clan. i could be wrong though.
keep in mind that the Roman gargs were not neccesarily demonic looking and different cultures look at gargoyles different ways (both the statues and the species) the English gargs are heraldic to the people and the Mayan gargs have a somewhat god-like status. if the Roman gargs had human-like features and feathery wings it'd be easy to see the early Church considering them as angels. we need a lot more info about the Roman Clan (looks, timeframe, reclusiveness, etc.) before we could really judge how the Church saw them...

and i'm not sure i understand the Francis Game...

That is all I will say.

Matt: I do agree that harboring Gargoyles is probably not something that the Catholic Church would be too keen on. Not only do they bear a resemblance to the way demons usually have appeared throughout history (in art and literature, at least), but most of the Vatican still regard women as second-class citizens. I also don't know where exactly the Roman Clan stands on Greg's timeline, but I do believe that they are (or were, if they're no longer around by 1994) very old. They at least predate the Wyvern Clan. And I don't know if you've ever heard of this, but here's a fun rainy day activity, courtesy of the genius of Monty Python:

THE FRANCIS OF ASSISI GAME
The player pretending to be Francis of Assisi deals six cards to every other player. Players then take turns to see who can remain motionless the longest. The first person to move then becomes Francis of Assisi.

Well, I guess I should give my two cents on the cover design (I sort of did last week, but it was more just a way for me to say "go and post a review if you haven't." Which I still say. But anyway, I also would have to agree that the City of Stone graphic would have looked much cooler, and would also have been appropriate considering the four-parter are the only episodes in Volume One to have commentary from Greg and Company. I too was also hoping for something that was more consistent with the cover design for Season One. But I own the first three volumes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and none of them are consistent. Volume One perhaps looks the most normal. But anyway, the picture on Gargoyles Season Two Volume One would, I think, have looked better decorating the surfaces of the discs.

"Someday I'll find myself like a bee finding honey. But in the meantime, I'm gonna have me some fun...Waiting for the big one."

I dunno how many people here frequent TVshowsOnDVD.com on a regular basis, but sometimes they put up links to upcoming DVD releases where the production team provides a poll to vote on the cover art. They'll offer two to four choices usually and then they announce which cover won closer to the release date. It'd be cool if Disney did something like that and let fans have some input. I remember someone from the Gargoyles DVD production team was asking us about what sort of extras we'd like to see not to long ago, so it's cool that we had some input already that may've had a bit of an impact.
Kris - [plekopleko@hotmail.com]

the DVD itself is what is important. of course all of us in here will buy it regardless of the cover art quality, but i'm more concerned with the quasi-fan looking to pick one DVD out of ten he/she wants. the cover is a selling point and naturally we want the best sales possible with this DVD. of course Disney does also, so you gotta wonder why they think its decent cover art...

Yes, I asked around for a while (wondering at first if something had gone wrong with my computer), and discovered that apparently the reason for it is the feud. I hope that this thing gets resolved soon, so that I can visit this place on my home computer again.

As for the DVD art - I'll honestly say that I buy these things for the DVDs, and as long as the DVDs themselves are top-quality, I don't worry too much over what the boxes that contain them look like.

Todd Jensen

While it may not be the most attention-grabbing style of art for store shelves, I was hoping they'd keep Season 2 consistent with Season 1 and have another stone/shiny image. Only with more characters and maybe a castle/cityscape background (and screenshots on the back of the case. That was the only thing sorely absent from Season 1). I hope Season 2 Part 2 features the whole clan, it's an ensemble series. At the very least, Elisa should be on there. And if I could request a major character who's not part of the main cast to include as well, Xanatos. I dunno, the stone art almost made it seem like Disney acknowledged that these DVDs aren't purely aimed at children, but more than that, gave them an air of respectability and made it look like some care was put into assembling them...or something. You know what I mean.

It's not like the covers to the DVDs are a HUGE deal, it's the content that really counts...but I kinda hate what they've chosen for Season 2 Part 1. It looks amateurish and rough...it looks too much like it was taken from a page of a Gargoyles comic book that wasn't the best possible piece of art they could've sampled.

If they couldn't go with the stone art, I would've liked one of the many painted promotional images like everyone else is suggesting.

Todd: I haven't had any major access problems, but I have noticed some quirks. When the server failed a week or so ago, Shortly before it occurred, I noticed that in the chatroom, the background appeared white on my computer for about an hour before it died all together. It was doing that yesterday again for a while. As for Wyvernweb(I have webspace and mail there) I haven't noticed an issue there per say. Then again, I spend more time at S8 then I do on my own web page. They may still be doing some work on it, since everything died but the hard drive and it's in a temporary home tower.

Todd: I've had the same problem more than a few times in the last couple of weeks. I think it has to do with the server. Something in the server wouldn't process certain IP ranges or something like that.

During the middle ages, I'm sure more than a few non-Inquitision friendly churchmen would have granted sancutary to clans, if no because they felt sorry for them, than because they would protect the Cathedral.

Shannon> gotcha. sorry i didn't see Greg's comment there. my apologies.

Dee> yes, if any Saint was to have gargoyle connections, i can see it being St. Francis. my mother is actually a Secular Franciscan so i was raised with plenty of Francis lore and stories, plus a good amount of those innumerable Francis with nature pieces of art. he seems like he'd accept them, even if the Church as a whole did not.
unfortunatly, any Clans befriended by the Church were almost certaintly wiped out at some point and it wouldn't be a surprise to me to learn that their destruction was related to actions of the Ghurch and change in dogma.
if any of these Clans have remnants they are probably part of the New Olympian Clan, but i wouldn't hold my breath.
and yeah, there was a Clan in Rome if i'm not mistaken. they were the original inspiration for the Modesty Spell i think.

I read today that Hamilton Camp passed away.

I first met Mr. Camp, when I story edited the last five episodes of DuckTales. Hamilton was the voice of GizmoDuck.

We worked together again on Starship Troopers, where he played the "Old Ranger".

More recently, I'd seen him live on stage in a number of productions with Glendale's "A NOISE WITHIN" Theater company. He played Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and he was hilarious.

And it doesn't seem that long ago, that I ran into him in Larchmont Village and introduced him to my two kids. We didn't know each other well, but he was always gracious, professional... and FUNNY as hell.

Godspeed, Hamilton.
