Maybe they said "series" to indicate that they were only collections of episodes, not full seasons. That would be weird, though.

JJ> I HATE calling them "series," and I DO call them SEASONS. Canadian aren't THAT British. :) However, they are listed are "series" on the amazon.ca website.

Go figure.

Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

I think Wingless' point is that the sets only have 9 episodes, when each season of the Raccoons has around 20 eps, as far as I can tell. Also, BattleBeast, you talk about "seasons" of a show in Canada, not "series," right? I hate that Britishism; it's only serves to confuse. It even confuses Greg W.: look in the archives for a question from a Brit wondering whether there were two or three series of Gargoyles, IIRC.

Well, since I had to recuse myself from Todd's creativity demon due to a conflict of interest ( ;-) ), and no-one's talking much about Gargoyles right now (except for some fan-art contests?), why not have an off-topic day, eh?
Let me suggest a controversial thought concerning the Raccoons: could Bert Raccoon be mildly retarded? He seems to be a young adult, but he often acts like a child, and has to depend on his friends for food and shelter.

PS Do you know that Mac OS X doesn't realize that "recuse" is a word in English? I just that found out. :shrugs:

Wingless> They ahve them as series sets. But, they are like 9 episodes to a THREE disc set (?!?!?!?). Go figure. They have them available through Amazon.ca. Last I checked there were two sets available... wait... I'll check right now.

*HOLD ON*

Yes, there are only two sets available.

When I first checked out the sets, only Set 1 was available; then set 2 came available a few months later yet they both say they were released at the same time...

Battle Beast - It's a shame they haven't bothered to do the Raccoons in season sets. only cheesey 2 shows per dvd things. As for the end theme, someone other than Lisa Laugheed did "Run with us" for the first season, not sure who. I do have Lisa's version on a 45(remember what those are). The guy behind The racoons (Kevin Gillis) was also behind the show Eckhart.
But of course, we're off topic for this room.

Watched an ep of Justice League Unlimited this morning and had voices of Michael Dorn and Ed Asner-along with one voicethat drove me nuts. Finally figured out it had to be Artie Johnson(no one has a voice like that!) I'd love to hear him do more voice work.

I decided to have a new artwork .. Okay soo it not part of the MCG site and yea I was late for the Hero thing for MCG soo what.. I was busy.. I would do somthing for it but if its for the horror thing it would be nice for one AMCG you know the gory style .. :P never mind my head.. Like the man said, "There are no problems; only solutions!"

Actually, it was "Disney Computer." (Connects with my comment about children aged 21 to 35) I mean, I'm meaing a hypocrite here, yesno?

I suppose one day Pixar might become Disney Computer, though!

Now, should I email Canada for forgiveness, BattleBeast :-P ? You know, that *is* what your email link says when you mouse over it (at least on Safari under OS X).

And Now for Something Completely Different(Totally OT)>> Has anyone here ever heard of "The Raccoons"? Esp. you Canadians out there. Just remembered them the other day, esp. silly old Bert Raccoon....(or was it Burt?)

I feel like I'm playing host to visiting imaginary friends now; 'tis a bit wierd.

Do I always sound so opaque and, uh, unlucid? (I think I just invented a word :-/)

BattleBeast>> Hmmm... I'm not sure I like "Children and men 21-35." Does that mean that Ultimate Disney considers some twentysomethings "children"?
(Also, do women not like these shows!?? Really?!?? I doubt that.)

Also, have you heard that Disney and Apple Computer are starting to sell episodes of ABC and Disney Channel shows over the iTunes service? I wonder if they will one day sell cartoons like "Gargoyles," "DuckTales," etc.

Oh, I guess I better let you laugh about "Disney and Apple Computer" then. (I wonder if anyone will guess what I'm thinking about right now?)

Anyone check out the links to the other DVDs that fool is selling? The Star Wars Episode III description says this:

"The DVD picture quality is great and the sound is perfect just like if you were in the theater very good quality guaranteed!"

I'm still laughing. Who wants to bet that's because it was pirated in a theater?

53 days left until Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 1 - the OFFICIAL version - comes to DVD.

Actually, Bronx was compared to Cujo in the Season One Gargoyles Bible that Greg Weisman himself wrote. Embarrassing, but true.

I don't think that even Oberon would be able to bring the gargoyles back to life, in light of the events in "Grief"; at best, the only way that that could be done would be to bring them back as Coldstone-like beings made out of animated stone and mechanical parts combined, which wouldn't be a desirable fate.

(I'm leaning towards a "why punish humanity at all" for a different reason; if the gargoyles have all been wiped out, then that means that a major line of defence against the various criminals and super-villains in the Gargoyles Universe has been removed. So the next time that New Yorkers find themselves getting held up on the subway by the three street thugs or held hostage by a gang of bank robbers or having their homes and places of business blown up by Tony Dracon as part of a protection racket or threatened by Demona or Jackal and Hyena or what-have-you, the gargoyles aren't going to be around to come to their rescue. Sometimes, a punishment can supply itself as the natural consequences of an action.)

And I like the idea of baby Alexander wanting to know what happened to the gargoyles, even if it is a rather dark creativity demon.

Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

hell, why bother punishing humanity. if the third race is going to get involved why not just bring the gargoyles back to life. or have the humans clone some more or something.
matt - [ewoks11@hotmail.com]

As for Todd's hypothetical: It is in entirely dependant on who's doing the judging. I'm going to assume it's the 3rd Race of a member of. I can't see Oberon unless it was threat to him or his children as a whole or a personal slight. His mood would be determine the nature of any punishment. If he was angry, humanity might die of a slow wasting disease. If he was level-headed he might do something less drastic to the Quarrymen and their allies or task the whole thing to Titania or a lesser fae.

It's also possible Titania would take this up on her own (I see can Alex asking 'Gramma' where all the gargoyles went.) Or Puck.

If all things are true, then someone is actually taking all my left socks!

HoE> As I said, he's a bit.... stupid. Or ignorant. He put a link to the GFW reviews for 'story summaries'.... obviously not knowing that such a link usually (with most visitors) leaves a 'referenced by' entry in the recipient's web log. That's usually a good thing, for webmasters tend to be curious about where links to ones site are. Well, out of sheer luck, I checked the log today (mainly to see what the bots are currently reading - MSN search bot is harvesting the fanwork and song section today :) and stubled across this referrer - one I didn't know. Well, as I said, I'm curious...... and thus, I stumbled across this site.

And yes, that's fanart over there.... plus small images 'borrowed' from GFW passing as screenshots (the Bronx image is taken from the 'characters' page of the GFW). Unfortunately, _I_ cannot do anything - I don't own those pics. The artist who drew the fanart on the other hand.......

Vashkoda> Yup, that's the one. I knew I've seen this before. Hmm, I rather doubt Tara authorized this usage......

Guandalug la'Fay - [guandalug@gargoyles-fans.org]
It has been said that the world is a strange place. This is not true. The world is a VERY strange place.

I'm confused. Is this guy trying to pass Madoc and Maeve off as Oberon and Titania? Anyway, I would say someone ought to report this guy, but stupidity of this magnitude usually undoes itself. By the way, how did this come to your attention, Guandalug?

Todd: Yeah, it was MAD. Back in the days when they made more intellectual jokes as opposed to too many jokes about secretions.

Vashkoda: There are so many little innacuracies at that site, I don't feel like explaining them all. Most gargs fans should be able to spot them anyway. One thing I will say, if I were going to compare Bronx to anything, it would be a friendlier dog such as Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin as opposed to Cujo.

Matt: I too would have to place myself in the camp of "the entire castle had to be above the clouds." Xanatos could have timed it so the last stone was put in place during the day, which would also have given the crews time to get the gargoyle statues up onto the parapets.

Guandalug> WOW! What a cheap and obvious rip-off! Did you notice the "Screen Shots?" They're all stolen fan art!! (WTF!?!?)

Matt> Most likely they waited to "install" the gargoyles until after the castle was complete so there would be less of a chance of statue damage during construction. I'm also guessing the conditions of the spell might not be met unless the castle was complete.

"I hate people when they're not polite." -David Byrne.

Maybe "over-analyzing" wasn't the right word for it, I'll admit. But I did think that getting sidetracked into how the mass-slaughter of the gargoyles took place distracted from the central point of the hypothesis.

And I didn't specifically think of the tribunal as Third Race, but as merely any superhuman agency (and asking too many questions about it also distracts from the main point, I believe).

HARVESTER - Your signature reminded me of a poster that we had in my old school in England saying "Join the Roman Army", with a Roman centurion pointing straight at the viewer a la Uncle Sam in one of those old army recruitment posters. The only part of the text that I can clearly recall was "No Scots Accepted" (which probably has its own relevance to this site, in view of all the Scottish characters in "Gargoyles").

Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Lord GargFan: Remember that Oberon still has limits to his energy. Whether the human race woul live long enough to learn this and figure out how to use it is another story. Of course, when Xanatos fought Oberon, he had defenses that were implemented by a fellow member of the Third Race. But this raises yet another question: Puck's already at odds with his master. How would he take Oberon wanting to punish all the humans for the actions of a few?

And anyway, I imagine that we'll learn of one of their main weaknesses early on in the fighting. Unless... does anyone know how much iron goes into standard artillery these days?

Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75@gmail.com]
"Join the Phoenician Navy! See the edge of the world!" -A recruiting poster from history.

Todd> if you are not going to "over-analyze" whats the point of even having these discussions. i'm hardly the only one who does it and in this context i don't think its such a bad thing.

and on the topic, the ONLY reason i can see the Third Race getting involved is because we would have wiped out their honor guard on Avalon. besides that i think the non-interference law would keep them from doing much. yes Oberon interprets his laws how he will, but i didn't see him punish us for all the species we've already destroyed in the past year or decade or century. *shrugs* i think you are overestimating how much Oberon and the Third Race would care about us and our actions so long as they don't bother them. i didn't see him help out in the second World War, and i havn't heard he is involved in the resistance for the Space Spawn invasion. the only time we've seen him get involved is when himself, his people or his home was at stake.

matt - [ewoks11@hotmail.com]

MATT - I think that you're overanalyzing my creativity demon. The extinction of the gargoyles at human hands is just a plot device to set up the trial in it, and should not be looked into too closely.

HARVESTER - I don't know if the story is in the archives, but I have seen it at FanFiction.Net, under the title of "Castaway's Dream" by Durid the Druid.

Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I thought about it, and I've decided that I'm probably giving Oberon an all-mighty image in my mind. Honestly, I don't know the limit or even extent of his powers, or even if there are, but I'd definitely say that they'd find some way of finding all humans responsible. And if there were a war, I believe that resistance would be futile. They'd be fighting a bunch (I'd guess that the whole Third Race would be involved in this too) of powerful beings greater then themselves. We'd have no chance, even if we killed Oberon. And then you'd have punishment once we lose the war for the war itself against mankind, and then we'd have an even bigger creativity demon.

Honestly, I think that Oberon would have tons of fun with his punishment, and be creative as possible. After all, he COULD have just wiped out Goliath and company then and there, but he insisted on putting up a fight (pre-power loss, and even post-power loss).

Which is a word that I apologize for miscrediting to Todd.

Lord GargFan
Thinking, thinking

i'm glad this conversation is hypothetical. i mean, its unlikely the gargoyle species could go extinct at this point. some Clans might be destroyed, the gargoyle beasts might die out, but gargoyles themselves seem pretty safe to me. i think that when every Clan left the world-wide public eye they guaranteed their safety. the Quarrymen, as far as we know, know about one Clan. in the late 1990s many of the Clans don't even know about each other. secrecy is protecting many Clans. the only Clans i'd worry about being attacked would be the Manhattan and London Clans cuz they are more or less publically known about. Clans like New Olympus and Avalon are so secret that their destruction (by humans at least) seems non-existant.
it makes me wonder if the New Olympian Clan thought they were the last Clan until Goliath and Co showed up. i mean there was no human tv shows about gargoyles and its unlikely they had any contact with outside gargoyles for centuries. most likely they thought that like the New Olympians themselves, they were the last of their kind.

Harvester> " it should be a day honoring Leif Ericsson."

There is. I noticed it on my calender a couple days ago. It's next Sunday, I think. It's just not a federal holiday.

Leo

As I said in the TGS Comment Room, if any day celebrating the discovery of America should be observed by our country, it should be a day honoring Leif Ericsson. Once again history is full of ironies: it was a Viking who managed to establish a peaceful relationship with the natives, something most of the European cultures who came later were unable to do.

Todd: Do you know if this story happens to be in the archives at the fansite?

Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75@gmail.com]
"We've got to get in to get out."

I agree that the whole human race ought not to be punished for the actions of the Quarrymen and other gargoyle-haters. (There is one possible argument for holding the entire species responsible, mind you, which is the argument that if the bulk of the humans had actually stood up on behalf of the gargoyles, there would have been no gargoyle massacres, and that their inactivity or even passive support for people like the Quarrymen doomed the species. And that still ignores those humans like Elisa who did stand up for the gargoyles.)

As for the punishment, I'm not sure what it'd be. Part of the problem is that, in this hypothetical situation, the gargoyles have already been wiped out, so what practical use would punishing the people who killed them achieve? It can't stop them from killing any more gargoyles, because there are none left (except maybe Demona), and even if the nature of the punishment could somehow get them to realize that what they'd done was wrong, the lesson would reach them far too late (unless it would allow them to at least not do the same thing to other "different" species, like the New Olympians, for example). There'd be a certain futility about it.

(I read a brief Gargoyles fanfic once that did have just such a situation; Castaway and his followers succeeded in killing every gargoyle on the planet, except for Demona, and even she was temporarily killed and had to go into hiding to prevent the Quarrymen from tracking her down again. Elisa, filled with anger over the massacre, and over the fact that even the humans who didn't take part in it allowed it to happen and wouldn't lift a finger to save the gargoyles, appealed to Oberon for justice; Oberon responded by cursing every human on the planet to be transformed into a gargoyle - and, unlike the case in "The Mirror", to be aware of the transformation. The consequences weren't particularly pleasant.)

thanks for the heads up on that Leo. it is sad, but at least the movies themselves have survived. to lose them would be far worse.

i think Columbus Day in America will die out in the next couple generations. the problem is that until the last few years most children, myself included, were raised to see Columbis as some sort of early American Hero who believed in himself when no one else did and set out on a grand adventure to encourage science and spread the word of God. i know now that most of that is bull$hit. just propaganda. i hope the next few generations will learn what really happened. he didn't discover America, everyone already knew the world was round, and his motives were not scientific or adventurous in nature. he was pushed by greed and religious fanticism.
not saying he was a bad person, perhaps in the late 1400s he was someone to be respected and admired, but he certaintly was no hero and there are others who deserve an American (or World) holiday and who don't have one such as Einstein, Newton, and DaVinci.

FLYING GHEKOS WILL RULE THE WORLD!

Matt: Well, remember that gargoyles are protectors by nature. I imagine that there are only a few rogue ones, such as Demona, that really advocate the wanton murder of humans.

I also don't believe that it would be right to hold the entire human race accountable for the actions of a few. And that's for the same reason that descendants of Southern slaveowners should not have to pay reparations to the descendants of slaves: they were not directly responsible for the suffering inflicted. As Goliath told Demona in "Awakening, Part Five," the ones that were actually involved in the Wyvern massacre were dead. Well, the opposite of this was true, but Goliath didn't know any better. And anyway, the principle behind what he said still carries water. I'm sure there are people in isolated parts of the world who've never even heard of gargoyles. Should they be held accountable? I would think that only those directly involved in the killing should be the ones who have to pay a penalty.

I guess the only analogy I could really come up with would be: I just happen to be a citizen in a country fighting a war in the Middle East. I would therefore be irate if me or someone I cared about was killed in a terrorist bombing here in the States, and the ones responsible claimed that the actions of other people were my fault, and I therefore deserved what happened to me.

D. Taina: I've just come from amazon.com. I see you've finally found your muse! It's strange. Fundamentalists usually inspire me, too. Todd> humans taking responsibilty for their actions? right.
theres some things i just can't suspend disbelief on...
Columbus Day is a good day to think about what we'd do if we wiped out a people. all the native american peoples were human and i don't see us doing much to punish ourselves for their destruction. so i don't think we'd do much if we wiped out the gargoyles either. we might talk about it, and some people (like Elisa) would be outraged and demand justice, but over time nothing would be done and we'd forgive ourselves... or just forget. as time went on, generations would blame that on their ancestors and claim that they have moved past these sorts of things until the time came when they wiped out another people.
if an outside party like the third race, Nokkar, the New Olympians or Demona tried to punish us it'd be impossible. how do you decide who is responsible? how do you find those who actually did the killing? what about families of humans who had loved ones killed by gargoyles, how would they feel? its not going to happen, and if someone DID force a punishment on us, i can see us going to war over it.
humans kinda suck really, lol. i don't propose mass suicide or anything, but i do think the world is better without us. call me a cynic if you want, but there is no evil in the world that humans don't cause IMHO.

LORD GARGFAN - Actually, somebody else came up with the term "creativity demon"; unfortunately, that was so long ago (around the time that I first discovered Gargoyles fandom on the Internet, in late 1996) that I can't remember who came up with it.

On a side note, to match Patrick's countdown to the release of the Gargoyles DVD, it's 60 days until the release of the movie version of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"!

Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Hmmm...Todd, good question!

First, I would think that the penalty should not be death. We all know that Demona would want an eye for an eye, but I think that the best course of action would be eternal confinement in a Hotel Cabal (sp?)-esque building miles above the earth. And as I said before for something else, there's always what we did to those prisoners--heavy metal, Barney, and Sesame Street, except for all eternity

As to the second part, I think that it would be most likely to be confined to those who are suspected of anything--guilty until proven innocent, but tried in a court consisting of Demona-supporters.

But you've presented a nice "creativity demon", to use your word. I'll have to reflect on this further...

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in Canada!

Here's a hypothetical situation that I thought might make an interesting discussion topic for this week. Imagine this:

All of the gargoyles (by which I mean all of the clans, not just Goliath's) have been wiped out by human action (with the Quarrymen leading the assault, but not being its sole participants); the sole survivor of this species, if there is one, is Demona (thanks to her link with Macbeth). You are on a tribunal of some superhuman species or civilization (maybe Oberon's Children, maybe something else) sitting in judgement on the human race over its having driven the gargoyle race to extinction. You are now presented with two questions:

1. What sentence should be placed on humanity for having wiped out the gargoyle race?

2. Should the sentence be on the human race itself (with exemptions, perhaps, to any pro-gargoyle humans, such as Elisa, if they survived), or restricted purely to the Quarrymen and anyone else who did the actual slaughtering?

(Demona's answers to both questions would be obvious, though I doubt that she'd be taking part in the debate; knowing her, she'd rather go out and take action rather than waste her time on words and legal arguments.)

Happy Thanksgiving to those lucky enough to be a citizen of Canada.

for those of us here in the good ole US of A we get to celebrate Columbus opening up an era of native exploitation, religious persecution and environmental destruction. you'll forgive me if i don't do much to celebrate this "holiday"...

And retiring the Wolf avatar today. Carnivale's been dead for about half a year now and Clancy Brown hasn't been on my screen since, though I guess I'll be hearing his voice again when the Season 2 DVDs arrive. Maybe I'll resurrect it then (unless someone takes it).
