Hello I am attending the Gathering later this month. Im the schedueled events are the "mug a guest" events. I am guessing this means Q&A sessions with them, but wanted to ask. What exactally happens during them?

GROUP THERAPY

Another great episode, admittedly I was slightly worried that the story would be a bit crammed with both the Sinister Six and the alien costume story, but once again this Greg and Co manage to make the most out of their allotted twenty minutes.

The six themselves were played fantastically. This episode does a good job of show casing what a villainous mastermind Doc Ock truly is. It's interesting how he's apparently taken Electro under his wing. It'll be neat to see how that develops in later seasons. I especially liked his warped sense of chivalry regarding May and Anna. Ock may be a homicidal maniac but he is also a gentleman.

Speaking of may, I really liked that she stood up to the Six for Spidey. The whole "that awful Spider-Man" routine in the comics always made her really unlikable to me. I do hope that they don't overdo May's ill health, it's okay here but in the comics it's devolved into a borderline running gag.

The only thing that did bug me was Eddies sudden turn from a seemingly okay guy whose understandably pissed at Peter to creepy psycho. I understand how losing you clan or crippling your brother might drive you round the bend. But Eddie thinking Pete is a jerk ranks a bit low on the pathos-o-meter. Still I'll reserve judgment till the current arc is over.

In short: 95% greatness and 5% "meh", still great stuff.

My third review round:

Episode 7- Catalysts
- Everyone's reaction to Peter's date, priceless. Especially since we get a mention of his bet with Flash.
- Though I feel bad for Gwen, good to see that she got a smile after seeing MJ with Flash in Peter's absence.
- Like everyone else, I'm certainly not a fan of Sally.
- Leaving Mary Jane to help Tombstone. I'd say this is my favorite example of The Parker Luck. Good thing that MJ takes Peter's departure well, and that he gets the last dance.
- Too bad that Harry was dumped, but at least Flash and the gang got a bit of karma. Don't dump the guy with the limo indeed.

Episode 8- Reaction
- I'm always a sucker for romantic moments, and that scene with Spidey saving the guy and gal satisfied that feeling.
- Given that the early comics are the basis for the series, I wasn't really surprised that Pete and MJ weren't in a serious relationship. Though a good number of viewers thought otherwise. Makes sense considering that we all relate to Spidey in our own way.
- Though Ock's personality change did seem fast, it still feels natural.
- Was waiting for Liz to warm up to Peter since her expression around the end of episode 2. Their date didn't disappoint.
- Can't really see the Goblin being anyone else, especially with Norman's smirk at the end.

Episode 9- The Uncertainty Principle
- I thought that the 90s Series did well in humanizing Jameson, but this as well as episode 7 and 11 do a better job. Plus, it helps to have a definitive reason for him to be labeling Spider-Man as a menace.
- I can't see how anyone believes Gwen to be a copy of Debra Whitman, considering that her stare can be intimidating to Peter.
- Peter's Halloween costume choice, gave me yet another Amazing Friends flashback.
- Favorite Line #1 (Liz): You can web me up anytime, Petey.
- Flash Thompson as a cheerleader. Much more frightening than any Halloween creatures could ever be.
- Favorite Line #2 (Spider-Man): Trap. (Tombstone): Trap.
- So, Harry is the Goblin. Or is he?

Group Therapy
In our latest misadventure, the Sinister Six comes to town.

First off, this was almost a Where's Waldo of previous characters. Let's see, who's in this episode?

Dr. Octopus; Vulture; Electro; Montana/Shock; Sandman; and Rhino. Our Sinister Six. But Hammerhead; Fancy Dan; and Ox also make appearances. I think Quentin Beck and Phineas Mason were also seen in Rikers Island.

Really, Green Goblin; Lizard; and Chameleon were the only ones missing. Goblin and Lizard apparently had Knicks tickets; I'm guessing Chameleon is a hockey fan, and hoping Black Cat is into jello wrestling ;)

Okay, first off, I loved the prison scenes. Especially Rhino and Sandman's cells. How does Rhino go to the bathroom? Kudos for the Dr. Ashley Kafka cameo. I enjoyed Electro and was glad to see he was the catalyst of their escape. I didn't expect Ox and Fancy Dan to join in the escape, but nice to see they're off with Hammerhead and I'm sure we'll see them again doing the Big Man's bidding...

... While I'm on the subject. One of the many things that annoyed me about the 90s series was that the Sinister Six.... er, "Insidious" Six (apparently, Sinister was a no no word for Fox Kids) were nothing more than Kingpin's glorified goon squad, with Doc Ock as the leading lackey. For a moment, I was afraid we'd see the same here, with Tombstone in the Kingpin's role. But, I'm glad that's not the case. While they may have coordinated, the Sinister Six is Doc Ock's show.

And what a show it was. Ock was cold, ruthless, sadistic and had all the best lines. Yup, that's the Doc Ock I know and love. I loved the dinner scene, hell, if I were locked up for a while, first thing I'd want is a four star meal at the best Italian restaurant in town. "Gentlemen, and Rhino," I loved that line.

The fight scenes were brutal. The first one, where Spidey got his ass kicked, and the second one where the Six got torn apart. Ock was just vicious, what with all the talk about impaling (heh, only character I foresee getting impaled wasn't in this episode) and peeling the symbiote off.

Finally, I'm glad the symbiote didn't make Peter over the top ruthless and vicious like the third movie and the 90s series did. While, I'm no fan of the story, I still liked the nod to the symbiote taking Peter out for a joyride.

The only thing about this episode I did not like was the Eddie Brock and Mary Jane scene. Okay, his first scene with Peter was fine. I can believe the guy drives like a maniac... he's crazy enough to tackle the Lizard. But, I just can't see the guy we have previously seen doing that to Mary Jane. I can't. Personally, I think this is an intrinsic problem with the character of Eddie that goes back all the way to his comic book debut. There is no logic at all to what he becomes. I hope I am proven wrong, and so far this show has done nothing but hit everything right as far as I'm concerned. But this here, by itself, just fell flat to me. Aw well.

Good show.

* SPIDER-MAN SPOILERS *

A few days ago, I bring up the possibility of Falstaff showing up in "Bad Guys" #5, and now the original Falstaff gets mentioned in this episode - though the play that Aunt May and Anna Watson were going to see was apparently "The Merry Wives of Windsor" (for those who haven't seen or read that play, think of it as the Falstaffian equivalent of "The Goliath Chronicles") rather than one of the Henry IV plays.

We get another human moment from J. Jonah Jameson when he learns that Peter's mother just had a heart attack. (Something that I'd suspected might be coming when in the last episode - the one with Chameleon and Black Cat = she seemed a bit ill near the start.)

I hadn't initially thought that the symbiote was responsible for Peter sleeping in so much and his eerie silence during the final battle with the Sinister Six, but that was a great revelation. (I *did* suspect, though, that the symbiote might be partly responsible for Peter taking an attitude of "I don't need Eddie or anyone else".)

* SPOILERS END *

And we need to get "Ask Greg" opened again so that we can submit our reviews. Apparently Gorebash hadn't expected Season One to be still airing new episodes by this point.

"There was banter. What are you talking about?"

Not at the first commercial there wasn't. Ramble, not review. To edit it would be to remove the spontaneous element.

"Um.... okay."

It's just what came to mind when I saw the part after Peter went to bed. I really didn't like Eddie in this episode, I thought he was a being a short-tempered idiot.

"Mary Jane is a pretty good judge of character. Not to mention she probably knows he's Spider-Man. Not to mention Peter never behaved like a complete and utter psychopathic creep towards her. Not to mention...

... I'm sorry, there is so much wrong with that complaint, I can't even get into it."

Sorry you feel that way. I just think she's getting a little too head over heels into this whole dynamic between Eddie and Peter and... she hardly knows either. I thought a more straight-forward 'You need to bug off' would be more appropriate for a 16 year old (or however old she is) girl. Unless she does know he's spider-man. Then I would understand it, but evidence speaks for itself, as of right now. Maybe that'll change next week, I dunno, I wasn't rambling about next week.

If you honestly thought I was suggesting that Eddie WASN'T being a huge jerk, then uh... read the part about him being in Peter's closet again. That's how frigging creepy I thought he was being.

"What does this have to do with anything? This show was made over a decade after that show, animation techniques change. Compare it to a show that's more contemporary."

Nothing to do with animation. Everything to do with SKILLS. On Gargoyles, everyone could fly or glide basically, or they had a lightning gun or a laser gun. It was all the same. It's just a comparison I've had in my head since I've watched the first episode. Obviously it has to do with who's pen is guiding the storylines that draws this comparison from me. But that's not to say it was bad, just that I thought it was... not compelling.

But I've never thought action was the strength of the show anyway. That's not why I watch it. If anything, I'm complimenting Greg on such a vast improvement.

To be honest, though. I could do without the belittling. I've had nothing but good things to say about this show from the start, except that episode 7 and 8 were a little weaker than the rest, until aspects of this episode really bothered me. Like made me physically angry by how heavy-handed the conversions were for some of the characters in this episode. Maybe it'll pay off, maybe it won't, but as of right now, I'm just a bit peeved.

Aldrius

Great episode. Not my favorite, per se, but I enjoyed it just the same.

***SPIDEY-SPOILERS***

Well, some random thoughts on the episode:

-- No Black Cat here . . . but I'm sure we'll see her soon.

-- Electro's gotten used to his powers . . . at least more so than in Episode 2.

-- Is Doc Ock permanently charged, or did he just get a month's boost or something?

-- Loved Shocker again, I almost forgotten about Fancy Dan and Ox.

-- Jonah showing some heart again -- loved that.

-- If Rhino was alone, I do beleive he would have went into the tunnel again . . . .

-- Falstaff -- Is Greg giving us a hint for Bad Guys or is he just being a Shakespeare-fan-in-general again? Either way, it's clear he's having fun :P

-- Was that Norman on the streets or just a look-a-like?

-- I too was curious to see Spidey get quiet in the final battle. It was just creepy.

-- Poor Aunt May . . . that just stinks.

No Harry, No Gwen, not much of M-Cubed . . . it was mostly a Spidey-Villain ep here, and yet still so much is going on in Pete's life. Great stuff :)

Okay, gonna have to post my ramble here then.

Rhino's really tough in this show, heck, everyone's been set up as really tough on this show. How the heck is Spider-man going to beat them? With his fancy new black suit of course.

Jeez. Eddie needs to take a serious chill pill. Seriously. Being cross is one thing but "I want to punish you and take away something you love for taking pictures and making money" is pretty damn stupid. I mean, how friggin attached was he to the suit?

Liked that reveal. But I'm kinda disappointed that there's no inter-banter between the six. They all just kinda get along as one big happy family. Who's missing? Green Goblin, Black Cat and the Chameleon? Is that it? And the Lizard, thanks Spider-man.

Ah, they were going somewhere with those defeat methods. I'm assuming that some of them will still work, though. Or did they install sweat-slots into Rhino's armour.

Eddie is just stupid.

Peter really needs to listen to people instead of being stupid.

I bet that was Eddie in Peter's closet. Just to be a jerk about it. "Haha. I'm dating his girlfriend and now I'm in his closet. I'm so bad."

And the dinner scene was just about the greatest thing ever. Everyone's motivations is getting in the way. Electro wants a cure, Shocker wants to go solo under the Big Man, Rhino wants revenge, Sandman wants money, Vulture wants Osbourn, Ock wants... uh... well I actually have no idea what Ock wants. Spider-man defeated I guess, but in general I suppose he just wants to be recognized. The reverse of his original personality, where he wanted to slip beneath everyone's notice.

Actors are great of course, is that John DiMaggio as Sandman? I forget. But yeah, all amazing. All perfect for their parts.

Rhino and his revenge, how silly of him.

Doesn't even need to use his hands for webbing anymore.

...why is Eddie suddenly that creepy stalker?

And jeez, Mary Jane sure minces her words. "He's twice the man you'll ever be."? You hardly know either of them. Wouldn't 'get away from me you freaking psycho!" be a bit more appropriate?

Again, action, amazing. Much, much better than the fights on Gargoyles.

So basically spider-man is using the steroid suit to beat them by pitting them against eachother. How boring.

Oh, first Aunt May gets to get in the bad guys way, now it's Captain Stacy's turn? Maybe? I'd love it if he like sniped shocker or something. That'd be great.

Aha. No more quips! The sign that something is wrong with the webhead of course.

We sure are getting a lot of gratuitous half-naked Peter. Not that I'm complaining.

Oh no, Aunt May. =(

Jeez. "Catch Peter have a really friggin creepy head-trip with lots of deep demonspawned voices and more half-naked Peter of course. Culminating with a crazy stalker psychopath Eddie Brock! Only on the CW4Kids!! Buy our toys!!!"

Anyway, my husband just sent me a link to an article and interview about Disney's newest comics venture:

It definitely doesn't overlap with the SLG deal. At best, Disney may start putting more effort into all their comics licenses and getting approvals done faster on everything. At worst, Disney might decide that this is going to be there big push for comics now and allow the SLG deal to fall by the wayside. Or it could have no effect at all.

Well, Fang is already seen to be a villain, so that solves when/how he is a villain. The fact that he "switches sides" soon is irrelevant, he is a villain currently.
Matrix is very curious though. Perhaps he comes to find that his pursuit of Law and Order is more compatible with the highly organized structure of the Illuminati or simply incompatible with the "bad guy" actions of his teammates. It'd be very interesting if we see him as a loyal and powerful teammate only to have him become a villain down the road.

***Possible Bad Guys Spoilers***

Matt: A quick look at the GargWiki's Timeline reveals that Dingo and Matrix became a team as early as early May '96 and were countered by Hunter as late as November the same year. So that's about seven months time to give them attention.

As for some Redemption Squad members refusing to change their ways in the final issues, it does bring up a slight curiosity as to why Greg only mentioned Matrix and Fang (along with Falstaff, Sevarius, the Illuminati, etc) in that FAQ. (you beat me, Blue Wyvern)

I mean, at first I thought "Well, he's just being coy, 'cause all the characters are villains, even the protagonists, right?" But then it seemed curious that he would only mention two members of the RS.

Which then kinda striked my funny-bone, since Matrix currently seems to the least likely to detract from his pursuit of "Law and Order." If anything, the good-thing may simply go overboard or something.

Ricky >> Hmm... As interesting as it seems, I'm a little skeptical about this. To me, it feels like the Gargoyles comic would have to switch to graphic novel format just for the possibility to make it a film project. Mind you, there is the TPB, but I don't see how that will be connected to Kingdom Comics.

Somehow, I'm getting the impression that when they say, "...we're hoping to bring something new and different to those devoted fans," I don't see Gargoyles being a part of this. Then again, I could be wrong...

Bad Guys villains: I notice that, in addition to Falstaff (about whom I know basically nothing -- I suppose it's time to read Henry IV. In fact, I haven't read *any* of the histories yet (*shame*)), Fang and Matrix also appear in the list of antagonists. Maybe those two are the ones who have trouble deciding whose side they're on. Fang just seems difficult, and maybe Matrix realizes that, although perhaps they are doing good, these guys aren't necessarily behaving in a lawful and orderly manner?

Whatever happened to simplicity?

DPH> We know the Director is a civil servant working for some kind of government agency. He probably has access to information most people don't.

Ishimura might not be as secret as it thinks, and we know they've been monitoring Sevarius. As near as I can tell, they're in NY to go after Sevarius, not Fang.

Echowarrior> Gotcha. One question regarding the Redemption Sqauds reqruitment drive that I've been mulling over. Hunter was a captured felon and Dingo had apparently established himself as austrailia's premerir super hero. Given that, it's not hard to imagine how they came to the Director's attention. The question for me is how does the Director know about Yama and Fang? There can't be more then a handful of people outside Ishimura and the Labrinth who even know these guys exist.

Echowarrior - [WARendfeld at aol dot com]

If Falstaff is an Illuminatus (assuming he's the person from Dingo's past to be revealed in "Strangled"), I wonder if he might clash with Arthur in "Pendragon" (since we know that Arthur will be battling the Illuminati). That idea appeals to me, because of the "Arthur's bosom" line in "Henry V".

I could actually see Castaway trying to bring Jason round to his way of thinking as a way of subconsiously alleviating that guilt. If he keeps following Demona's lead he'll probably end up taking a bazooka to his crippled brother. It's hard to say though, we don't really know that much about Castaway compared to major villains like Xanatos or Macbeth.

Point Taken.

In light of the solicitation for the last two issues> Then, in the final battle against the forces of the Illuminati, each member of the squad will have to decide just whose side they are on. Is redemption even possible for the bad guys? And if so, at what cost?

Makes me wonder if any the RS members would leave the team and somehow put themselves on the wrong side of the law again down the line. Wouldn't be surprising since they aren't squeaky clean good guys.

Given that he said that he had no use for a Hunter who won't hunt Gargoyles, would John's attitude automatically extend to Jason? While he shirked responsibility for what he did, I imagine there would be a bit of guilt on his part.

RE: The Director

I'm also really interested in finding out more about this guy. We know very little about him and what little we do only raises more questions. Where does he get the resources to fund his own team of vigallantes, compleate with high tech secret headquaters and battle copter? Why is he gunning for the Illuminati? Lots to be explored right there.

Actually, given that Robyn is a MAJOR felon that JUST blew up a police station, the Director sprung her remarkably quickly. Gives you an idea of the scope of the guy's power.

Bishansky posted the names of the final two chapters of "Bad Guys" over at the GargWiki, "Strangled" and "Losers" respectively.

I like the way that the chapter titles echo each other: "Strangers", "Estranged", and "Strangled", and "Lost", "Louse", and "Losers". One more reason to admire Greg Weisman's work on this.

Time for a little useless speculation from me...though this time, it's on dates.

According to the Timeline, Hunter, Dingo and Matrix tracked down Yama on Nov. 5 - and Hunter was arrested a little over a week previous on Oct. 27. We know from Greg that the Director's the one she has to thank for her limited freedom...my question is, where in that span of time did she track down Dingo and Matrix?

Meanwhile, I'm as eager for everyone else to see the next few issues of both the main comic and Bad Guys. At last, a look at this enigmatic Director...for me anyway.

Echowarrior - [WARendfeld at aol dot com]

Only movie I saw was Iron Man. Out of curiousity, did anyone here catch the scene where they played the theme to the 1960's Iron Man cartoon (Which was part of the Marvel Super Heroes cartoon)?

5&6 Solicitation: I'm still just geared for the continuation of the "Sevarius Arc" in #4, let alone the present day stuff. Trust me, I'd like to know what's going on with the Redemption Squad on "Robot Island," but Greg's got mind tethered to the Flashbacks as well.

If there's one thing I've enjoyed about Bad Guys it's that Greg has consistently given us multiple cliffhangers in every issue. :P

I find it ironic that in a solicitation for two books we receive less new information then we are accustomed to seeing in a solicitation for a single book. I mean, besides the part about a figure from Dingo's past and the shoice each member must make, there isn't anything there we don't know. Well, maybe the Illuminati part, but Greg revealed that as CiT a long time ago.

RE: Bad Guys 5&6

A lot of interesting stuff going on there. I'm glad that the last two issues are going to be focusing on the "Robot Island" story. While the flash-backing to the Redemption Squads origins has been interesting, it has felt more like a prologue so far.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the "mysterious figure from Dingo's past" is actually the Falstaff character that Greg has mentioned in some of his responses. That would tie in with Dingo being a Prince Hal analogue.

It's also interesting that this will be tied to the Illuminati in some way. Between this, their machinations in the main book and the big roles they're set to play in Pendragon, Dark Ages & 2198, it seems Greg is setting the Society up to be the "Big Bads" of the Gargoyles universe.

I've only managed to see one film so far this summer -- "Baby Mama." I enjoyed the premise, even though it was mildly predictible. However, I thought it was cute and it got some laughs from me. I know I wouldn't mind seeing it again some Saturday in the future, but I won't rush out to buy the DVD, if that helps.

After reading the "Bad Guys" #5 and #6 solicitation, I wondered about the mysterious attacker with a connection to Dingo.

We know that Dingo's real name is Harry Monmouth, which is an allusion to Prince Hal in Shakespeare's history plays. And Greg Weisman once said that he had plans, for the "Bad Guys" series, for an antagonist named Falstaff. Could Falstaff be the attacker, the person behind these giant robots with numbers on their chests?

I understand where Greg is coming from. If someone was going to use a name like that, they could have at least dropped into the CR and identified himself/herself first. GOLIATH: I SHOULD SAY SOMETHING SHAKESPEAREAN NOW.

Recent movies I saw, which I would recommend.

"Iron Man" was just great and fun. Go see it.
"Indiana Jones" was terrible, and I loved the originals.

Okay, the rest of my recommendations are DVD only.

"Titus" based on Shakespeare's play, "Titus Andronicus." Starring Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange and Alan Cumming. Directed by Julie Taymor

"There Will Be Blood" starring Daniel Day Lewis and directed by P.T. Anderson

"Munich" perhaps the best Spielberg movie of the decade (only one I liked).

"Bonnie and Clyde" bought the DVD recently. Excellent movie. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are terrific.

I could keep going, but those are a few I thought I'd toss out.

I also have seen several movies this month and that is odd for me as well. Of the movies I saw, I'd rank them from best to worst:

Iron Man
Speed Racer
Prince Caspian
Indiana Jones

Speed Racer and Prince Caspian were about equally good, but I put Speed Racer on top because Rex Racer was hot. LOL, sex sells, I guess. Anyway, don't spend your money on Indiana Jones unless you have money to throw away. Awful movie.

With all due respect, Matt and Spen, it's not either one of you who've had this happen. I've done some investigating, Gore got me an IP, and I have a pretty solid idea on who that individual is, which disconcerts and creeps me out even more.

Personally I've made a conscious decision not to go see the new Indy flick. After the Star Wars prequels I've no desire to watch Spielberg and Lucas resurrect another dead franchise in a desperate attempt to relive their glory days. I might rent it on DVD if for no other purpose then to indulge my curiosity. Frankly I just wish Hollywood would stop making remakes and callbacks to their past triumphs and just focus on bringing something new to the table.

That said, for all I know it could be a cinamatic masterpiece so try checking out some reviews. If all else fails just go see Iron Man instead.

Greg B. : Personally, I think that asking for a question to be booted just because you find their screen name 'disconcerting' is a bit of an overreaction. Chances are, the person asking the question thought that his or her question (and I'm leaning towards her) would be more likely to get a straight answer if Greg thought that they were connected to you in some way. While it is a dumb idea, it doesn't seem like something worth kicking the question off for.

Rebel - I'm surprised. I would think one of the stated goals of any foreign language would be the ability to think in that language. Trust me, you'll be in the right environment to learn to think in Spanish. If being in college in the US being asked to speak Spanish all the time helped me learn how to think in Spanish, then being in a place where Spanish is the dominant language spoken will definitely lead you to that point. I hope you have learned how to think in Spanish or you will find yourself wasting time translating things back into English.

Sorry for the double

dph > Well, at my university, you have to have 18 credit hours of Spanish classes to get a minor. This includes 12 hours of introductory courses: Spanish 101, 102, and 205 (which is 6 credit hours, you go to this class every day). For the remaining 6 hours, you can choose from a variety of classes offered by the Spanish program. Since I'll be graduating in December with my undergraduate degree in English, I decided the best way for me to complete my Spanish minor was to participate in the Spanish program's study abroad program this summer, which will get me 6 hours total--3 hours for the paper, and 3 more hours for the study abroad program itself.

I'll only be in Merida for two weeks, but I'll be completely immersed in the culture. I'll be living with a Mexican family, visiting Mayan monuments, as well as attending Spanish classes for 3 hours a day and doing tons of homework, as well as writing journals every day (in Spanish) about my experiences. We'll also be having a several-day-long orientation before we leave, where we'll learn more about the Yucatan peninsula as well as brush up on our Spanish before arriving in Mexico. Which is good, because I'm really rusty--it's been over a year since I took my last Spanish course.
