"The suspense is terrible . . . I hope it lasts," -- Willy Wonka

Okay "Secrets" is now my new favourite episode of YJ.
I still can't believe how dark this episode was. Harm has got to be one of the biggest Complete Monsters in western animation. Ben Diskin's potrayal of Harm as an archetypal sociopath was seriously chilling.

The mythology geek in me also got a kick out the Sword of Beowulf's scabbard being presumably the severed arm of Grendel.
Algernon

Brainiac: Unsurprisingly, I thought he played that role fantastically. Although,
despite the voice of Ben Diskin, the Greg W. character he MOST reminded me of was Jackal, as both are textbook sociopaths and speak accordingly. In another actor's hands the third-person speech and dehumanizing "it" designations could just sounds Narm-y, but Diskin managed to just make him creepy as all Hell.

Really, for managing to so perfectly adapt THIS dark of a character from the comics (yes, for any wondering, comics!Harm DID kill his sister to gain power - albeit under different circumstances - which turned her into the ghostly superheroine Secret), Greg W., Brandon Vietti, and his creator Peter David all deserve massive props.

...Plus, visual shout-outs to the Looney Tunes, Superboy's 90s costume, Scooby-Doo, and the Flaming C at the dance? WIN-WIN.
My GOD was "Secrets" good.

I mean...like, groundbreakingly so. On paper it might seem like something of a simple plot, but the execution...

I figured Peter David teamed up with the Weisman/Vietti crew could only produce good things, and I was definitely proven right tonight. If you haven't watched it yet, do so.

Greg Bishansky: I just took a gander at your blog and perused through your YJ reviews, all well written. And I agree with you on that BTAS ep: OTE. I also just thoroughly enjoyed your take on TGS, the blog from 9/25/2011.

I've wanted to ask you about some very points you brought up in the blog for sometime now. It was nice to see your relative disdain for the properties handling addressed here.

I just never good get my head around the idea, that a guy who was just an adamant proponent for not beatifying Xanatos was involved in the first place.

I had also, forgot about Graeme, Ariana, and Nudnik. As for Sata? there is a type of hard drive named a sata drive and I always thought naming her that was an attempt at humor ( Japanese company and all) just a thought.

Anyway I do thoroughly enjoy the blog!

Hi, guys! Been a while but I wanted to post a link. I just had my son and wanted to announce here too that we took up Bethesda on their baby-naming constest. I have Gargoyles to thank for some of the gumption and ego it takes to name their child Dovahkiin after a game character and hold true to it, stand fast against trolling, and feel my husband and I did right by giving our son a great and unique name. Oh, aside from other choices like Griffin and Dovah, another name I was considering was Owen ;)

Fus Ro Dah!!!

They probably never used "The Mirror" in the "Previously On" segments since it might have spoiled the surprises in the episodes that used elements introduced in it (such as Demona's transformations in "High Noon" or Puck in "Future Tense"). I remember Greg Weisman mentioning how he'd learned from the mistake of including Macbeth in the "Previously On" segment for "Lighthouse".
Todd Jensen

Correct, Matt and Greg, it's "The Mirror"!

Of pre-Avalon episodes, "The Price" and "City of Stone, Part 4" also were not used in a "previously...". "Silver Falcon" was used for "Revelations", and as Todd pointed out. "Lighthouse" was used in "Sentinal". "Temptation" was used for "The Mirror".

Spen

GregX: You are right, I re-read it after you addressed it. Haha, well yeah I'd have been right had what I read had been the question. Lol.

I am reminded of a line in Uncle Buck

Justin Lindley - [justin.lindley@gmail.com]

GREG B> Surprised that it's The Mirror considering what a big status quo changer it was.

It's definitely "The Mirror."

My guess is Awakenings Part One as literally NOTHING canon preceded it terms of aired episodes to date. haha
Justin Lindley - [justin.lindley@gmail.com]

Todd> I think you are right about that.

So I guess my guess still stands at "The Mirror"

Oh, and "The Price" is a good guess, but it isn't one of the first 21 episodes. The first 21 takes us all the way through "Vows", I believe, so "City of Stone" and after doesn't count.

Gorebash

I don't think it's "Lighthouse", since I remember they used a bit of it in the "Previously On" section of "Sentinel" about the two archaeologists who found the Scrolls of Merlin.
Todd Jensen

Spen> I'd guess "A Lighthouse...", but I can't seem to recall any "The Mirror" clips seen in 'Previously' segments. That would be pretty interesting given the episodes popularity, significance and the major changes to the story in the episode.

Then again, Maggie Reed is from Ohio. Maybe that could be my in. Bend the law without breaking it.

TODD>
Hard to say, the arm is roughly human looking (proper size and typical number of figures) with a dark green colouration, though that may be due to decomposition. The arm has a sword emmbedded in it, as if someone decided to use the arm as a scabbard.

Harm, a young supervillain, has apparently stolen the arm from a museum and uses the "Beowulf" incantation to draw the sword from it's "scabbard".
Masterdramon: Well, there's a big difference in reading Chinese and reading Chinese characters. The Japanese alphabet utilizes many Chinese characters in their alphabet which they call "Kanji". Taro would pronounce the letters differently, but they would have the same meaning to him. Asian letters come up as a gibbrish on the station 8 web site, but Yama's name would be prounced "Yama" by Japanese by looking at the Chinese character and "San" by Koreans looking at the exact same character for mountain.

Richard: I'm not sure that Taro would know any Chinese. He almost certainly knows English (which is a standard mandatory subject in Japanese public schools, so that's hardly surprising) but unless Bushido Concepts conducts significant business on the mainland I doubt he'd be the type to learn a language he was not forced to.

He struck me as a little too...undisciplined for that. In contrast to, say, Xanatos - who I'm sure knows the basics of quite a few languages. Just in case.

Gorebash: You're probably right about Demona. I was looking for an Easter Egg, but within the universe of the show, Dominique would probably not have something up on the wall too inflamatory or something that would give her away, especially since an international company like Nightstone would almost certainly do business with companies in Asia and businessmen from there might be taken aback if they saw "I'm going to kill all humans!" written in Chinese characters. I can just see Taro raising an eyebrow.
Richard Jackson

Battle Beast - You didn't see it? Richard Jackson nailed it with "Revelations". This cartoon short even nailed some of the Hotal Cabal rooms-including the fake window & the rotating room-not to mention the slide getting into the place. Just couldn't help but think of Gargs while watching it.
Wingless

Richard Jackson: How thick are the frames for the images in Dominique's room?!

Being Demona my money is on it being some kind of Sun Tzu quote (thus Chinese).

Gorebash

Well, I'm beaten on some Asian characters I tried to decipher. I was able to find out what the characters in "The Lost" and Young Justice's "Targets" said for their respective wikis, but I'm stymied with this: http://gargwiki.net/File:NightstoneOffice2.JPG

The experts I've taken the picture tell me it's either a cursive form of Chinese characters or it's just scribbling. I know one more guy whose hobby is Chinese calligraphy and I'll see him Monday.

Note: I may be hearing things and getting my hopes up, but one expert seemed to mumble "demon" when he was reading it. When I asked him to repeat, he just went on to say he couldn't read it.

Richard Jackson

MATT - Interesting thought. I'd sometimes thought about the tengu trickster element (since it often involved magic, it sounded almost like members of the Third Race with a Puck-like nature impersonating tengu), but hadn't connected it to Brooklyn's character traits.

A book I have about mythical creatures says that the tengu were said to live atop a mountain named Kurana, to the north of Kyoto. I wonder if this could have been the Japanese gargoyles' original home before they moved to Ishimura.

Wingless: I skimmed the cartoon and it seemed similar to "Revelations", which in turn was based on "The House that Jack Built" from the old Avengers series from the 1960s. Perhaps, the writers of that show saw this short. They would have been about the right age to have seen it in the theater.

Matt> I used to wonder that Brook might return to Ishimura a few times before leaving with Katana. In fact, when Greg first revealed that Brook would go back to 2198 after meeting Katana, it was worded ambiguously and my assumption was exactly that: he visited Ishimura before and after visiting 2198. But GregW quashed that idea on GargWiki. Doesn't mean that Brook didn't visit Ishimura more than once, but I now think it's less likely.
Supermorff

Yeah, I think it is only realistic to assume that Brooklyn and Katana would spend a long time together before she would choose to join him. And I like how Supermorff describes Katana's feelings on the matter. In fact, I wonder if her decision to leave with Brook was the first real outward sign that she loved him. Given how their relationship has been described, I can see them holding it all back until a choice had to be made and they had to admit to themselves and each other that they had that connection.

Todd's creativity demon makes me wonder if some of Brooklyn's antics are responsible for the more mischevious elements of the tengu legend.

Another thought. Greg has said that Brooklyn visits 2198 on different dances, first with just Fu-Dog, but later Katana spends some time there as well. Brooklyn might've come back and forth from Ishimura (and Katana) as well before she finally chose to leave with him rather then risk that time being the last visit.

Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]
"... And if we did it before, we can do it again." "And we will. Together." - Goliath and Elisa, "The Edge"

Jurgan et al.> I never finished any of the Gargoyles fanfics I wrote, but sometimes I got down certain scenes that I liked. One of these was from the end of the story of Brooklyn and Katana's meeting. After the "action plot" of the story is all concluded, and the Ishimura gargs are all celebrating in the village, Brooklyn goes off on his own, assuming (and perhaps hoping) that the Phoenix Gate will soon appear to whisk him away. He sits at the top of a nearby hill, expecting at any moment to have to run for the flame. Katana comes up, grudgingly admitting he fought well etc., then says he's stupid for waiting out here alone (with Fu-Dog) for something that he has no reason to think is going to show up. There's a little spat (words are spoken) and Katana goes storming off back to the village, calling him unpleasant names. Brooklyn waits on that hill for hours before finally conceding that Katana was right. He makes Fu-Dog promise never to reveal he said that, and they head back down to the village togeter. End of story.

The point is: who ever said Brooklyn and Katana had only one adventure together in Japan before leaving? My idea was that Brooklyn would be stuck there for some time, and sometimes he'd just be living there - no adventures at all. Katana got used to the idea that Brooklyn would always be around. She knew intellectually that he'd leave if he could, but deep down didn't really expect it to happen, hence the difficulty of the choice when it finally came.

Supermorff

"God knows I want to break free..." - Freddie Mercury of Queen

I wrote a Timedancer story once, showing my take on their meeting (click my name if you're interested). It involved them fighting together on the side of Nobunaga Oda, and then finding a Space-Spawn and fighting it, too. What was interesting was that, when I started the story, I fully intended Katana to leave with Brooklyn at the end. However, when it became time to leave, it felt unrealistic that she would go off that quickly. She was too strong of a character to run off with someone she'd just met. So I had Brooklyn leave when the Phoenix Gate arrived (this was before we knew about the Phoenix itself), but promise to come back for her someday. It was a proud moment for me as a writer- a character I created was strong enough that she wouldn't go along with the preordained plot, and I was smart enough not to try to force it.

I like the idea that she chooses to go off with him, but I should hope that's not a quick decision. He'd need to spend some time there before she was convinced. My idea was that she'd have a long relationship with Nobunaga over the course of about twenty years, one paralleling Demona and Macbeth. The difference would be that Nobunaga would happily betray his allies to buy peace for Japan, paralleling Macbeth's refusal to do so. I envisioned Brooklyn then fighting alongside Katana against Nobunaga, ultimately leading to his death, at which point they'd both escape together. I never had time to write all of this, but it seemed like a fun idea. I assume Greg has his own ideas about what sort of adventures they'd have that would lead to their leaving together, and that's more interesting to me than the (almost literal) deus ex machina of the Phoenix whisking them both away to have a relationship.

TODD> That might explain what originally drew and Katana together, Pirate and Samurai united against their common foe. ;)
Algernon

Speaking of Timedancing Brooklyn, I checked a still of his Halloween costume from "Eye of the Beholder" at GargWiki, when Brooklyn was dressed up as a pirate, complete with eyepatch. And he wears it over the same eye (the left eye) that he wears a patch for real upon his return. Now I'm wondeing if that was just coincidence or if Greg gave him that eyepatch as an echo of "Eye of the Beholder" (it would be neat if it was the latter).
Todd Jensen

I remember Greg mentioning that 2198 and Fuedal Japan being two of the longest of Brook's timedances. Which would imply that he and Katana will have plenty of time to drive eachother nuts before the Phoenix comes to scoop them up.
Algernon

I like the idea of Brooklyn spending some time in feudal Japan before the Phoenix takes him and Katana off on fresh time-dances, since that could allow the creativity demon I've mentioned before of "TimeDancer" adapting the Japanese legend of the tengu assisting Ushiwaka (a young Japanese nobleman whose clan had been defeated by a rival clan), making it the "action plot" for Brooklyn's adventures in Japan (the same way that the war between Constantine and the Grim was the "action plot" for Brooklyn's first TimeDancer adventure). We don't have any evidence, of course, that this would be incorporated, but it would be true to the tone of "Gargoyles" and its use of various legends. And it would certainly allow plenty of time for Brooklyn and Katana to interact before the Phoenix arrives.
Todd Jensen

Agreed. That seems to imply that Brooklyn spent a lot of time in feudal Ishimura before Katana would make that choice.
Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]
"... And if we did it before, we can do it again." "And we will. Together." - Goliath and Elisa, "The Edge"

I have to agree with Pterobat. Katana, after a rocky courtship with Brooklyn CHOOSING to accompany him is much more interesting than her just being taken against her will.

The whole notion of Katana being taken against her will, getting to know and then falling in love with Brooklyn is just... cliched.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
Elisa Maza, why don't you just take that "sodie pop" can and stick the straw right into New York's eye!

http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=3688 -- at one point Greg planned for Katana to choose to go with Brooklyn. If and when the series is continued, I hope that still holds up.

Why? Because it usually makes for a more interesting story when characters have to make tough decisions without outside forces intervening. It shows a true test of their desires and strengths.

In the same vein, it would feel, I don't know, more "honest" if Brooklyn and Katana's rocky relationship came from their own personalities, instead of just being spurred by external circumstances.

Pterobat - [incisivis@hotmail.com]

Matt > I've always hoped that Katana is initially an unwilling Timedancer. Whether the Phoenix chooses her, or whether she is dragged along by accident (which I guess is actually the same thing, from time's perspective), I would find it a much more entertaining romance if she falls in love with him over the course of their Timedancing adventures after initially being unhappy about being along for the ride.
Rebel

@Matt - If I had to guess since I didn't realize that Brooklyn and Katana had a rocky relationship, that she doesn't go willingly and gets taken along for the ride. And what better way to get to know someone and eventually fall in love than to dance through time with them?
Anthony Tini

Wow. That countdown was remarkably quick and orderly...

So, if you guys don't mind switching to a Gargoyles topic, I've been thinking about something. A few weeks ago Greg B. was talking about the rocky relationship between Brook and Katana. Given the nature of the Phoenix, how do you suppose Katana ends up joining the dance? Brooklyn would have to spend a long time in feudal Ishimura for Katana to willingly join him and leave her clan (perhaps forever). So was she accidently scooped up with Brooklyn or did the Phoenix single her out the same way it did Brooklyn or what? Any thoughts?
