CRAIG:
Well, that and I don't think Disney is going to sign off on what is also a nude scene. But I agree, I love the way it's directed, the panel choice, and while I didn't make the leap to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", I can see it.
Greg Bishansky - [<----- Voices from the Eyrie - Gargoyles Podcast]

Re: Preview pages of Gargoyles #7:
The sequence reminds me a bit of the (re-)introduction of James Bond at the start of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service,' introducing George Lazenby in the role. Initially seeing Bond driving only from a distance with sunglasses on, from behind, or extreme closeups on the iconography of the character (the Aston Martin, cigarette case, lighter, etc.) before finally revealing him in full. It also serves to emphasize Demona's detachment from her human form, that we don't really fully see her until her transformation, when she becomes her true self.
Craig

And
my suspicion that Demona would be the narrator in that issue turned out to be correct.
Todd Jensen

Matt > I hadn't seen those preview pages. Thanks for bringing them to my attention. The only downside is that now we've read almost a quarter of the issue already! (Ok, technically 22.72% of the issue.) It's amazing how quickly these go by, but how much stuff Greg manages to pack into 22 pages.
Of course, these particular pages aren't very eventful storywise, choosing instead to act as an appropriately moody reintroduction to Demona's character. It's a great iconic way to bring her back after all this time.
Listened to the "Voices from the Eyrie" podcast on "Revelations" this morning, and liked it. They touched on the discussion we had here a few years back about Illuminati-type conspiracy theories and their links to anti-Semitism (including the comment that here, the guy who's trying to expose the Illuminati is Jewish). And there was also a bit on Jack Dane, who definitely wound up not a one-shot character (especially now), and the way Mace Malone refuses to either confirm or deny Matt's theory that the Illuminati were supplying him with rejuvenation drugs. (Given what we know about the Illuminati's leadership, I have my suspicions about their real means of arranging longevity for their members - granted, the Holy Grail might not be willing to bestow its blessings on people like Mace Malone, but I'm sure that Peredur and Co. have found a way of getting around that.)

Not sure how many of you saw the Chapter 7 preview of the first few pages, but it was good to have after over a month of no new content. (How spoiled we've become!)

I'll save most my thoughts for Wednesday, but one observation and one guess:
I did not expect Demona to be our narrator! I figured it was going to be clan members only. This means that the remaining five chapters could be narrated by anyone. So much for making guesses on that point!
I do have a guess about Demona saying she gets her news other ways. Meaning not from Travis Marshall and other human sources. Perhaps she is going to contact Angela? A stretch maybe, but who else could she be getting news from? We'll see in a few days...
I look forward to hearing the new podcast. I'm in the middle of getting a new computer, so that may have to wait a bit, but when the transition is complete....
Todd Jensen

Matt: I like Demona putting two and two together when it comes to Brooklyn, but I not sure she could stand to face the monument to her guilt that is Castle Wyvern (at least until that initial pack with Xanatos via Puck).

Tangent: I hope Macbeth isn't jealous . . . d:

At the least, its good to know the Stone of Destiny made it back to Scotland once more back in mid-May.

Greg B > Cool. That's exciting, thanks for letting us know. Not only because obviously more content is better than less, from a pure standpoint of fan greediness; but also because it means you'd catch up to the comics issues more quickly, which is something I'm looking forward to. But obviously there's a lot of really exciting stuff to cover before then as well. Anyway, regardless of frequency, thanks to you and Jen and of course Greg for taking the time. Always a great listening experience.
Craig

We hope to move back to twice a month. Stay tuned.
Greg Bishansky - [<----- Voices from the Eyrie - Gargoyles Podcast]

Greg B > That's a good reason for a delay! I take it then that you'll be sticking to a monthly schedule going forward. I can only imagine that the biweekly schedule was tough on everyone involved.
Craig

CRAIG> The realities of organizing a podcast. Sometimes things happen. In this case, Dynamite wanted to have a word as per last months' show ;)
Greg Bishansky - [<----- Voices from the Eyrie - Gargoyles Podcast]

New Voices from the Eyrie dropped. Interesting listen as usual, with Cary Bates on there. One thing I either didn't know or had forgotten was that Elisa Gabrielli (Obsidiana, and Maria Chavez in this one episode, subbing for Rachel Ticotin) auditioned as the voice of Elisa Maza and was a finalist.

Also, Bishansky mentions at the end that this installment of the podcast is meant to come out in May, so it came out rather later than originally intended.

Craig

Sorry, that was me.

I'd still like to see the "Weird Macbeth" story, if "Gargoyles" continues past #12. (Maybe that's the big "Gargoyles" Dynamite Comics event for 2024.) Under this format, it could be billed as "Gargoyles meets Classic Comics".

odd sight

Just counting down the days until Chapter 7 (and possibly even more excited about Dark Ages soon after!)

Things I'd love to see given enough issues:

- I'd like to see Demona in the time between 997 and 1020. I'd like to see her figure out that Brooklyn was a visitor from the future, possibly through revisiting Wyvern and finding him still asleep there. I'd like to get more backstory into her choosing Brooklyn in Temptation.

- I want to see more of the Mayan Clan. We have had nothing of them since The Green (except in one radio play!). They were my favorite clan. Plus we have the lose end of the Mayan Sun Amulet being in the Manhattan Clan's possession. And it'd be nice to have that and Jade and Turquesa's stay in Avalon wrapped up.

- I'd like to see Broadway become more involved in the NYPD. We've had hints both on screen and from Greg that this is the path he might take. Could eventually be a follow up from Goliath's trial. Why not bring an actual gargoyle on to the GTF? Total speculation there, but would be cool and interesting.

- There are some mysterious gargoyles that I'd love explained better. This is from my interest in gargoyle biology. I'd like to know how Coco ended up with wings not typical for the London Clan. More scottish. Theres a gargoyle on Avalon that is totally aquatic. Do one or both of his biological parents come from Loch Ness? Also, in Demona's Clan we see a blue gargoyle with white hair. He has unusual ears. We see the same model used for a gargoyle on Avalon. But he wasn't in the cell we saw in the SLG comics. Was he from Wyvern, but simply hanging in another cell? And what happened to True?

- Also from a biology standpoint, it'd be interesting to see a gargoyle hatching. I hope we get to see that with Egwardo sometime soon as that should occur a mere 10 months from where we are in the story. It'd also be interesting to see a female gargoyle in the period between mating and laying the egg. Would she look pregnant? Frankly, I'm curious how being in heat every 20 years effects gargoyles. Is their behavior different?

- I'm super curious about what Thailog and Sevarius are up to with the Halloween samples. More clones seem redundant, so I think we'll see something new. Thailog Shock Troops perhaps. Thailog's version of the Steel Clan or Mutates. He appears to follow in Xanatos's footsteps on a lot of things.

- Any of the gargoyles culture stuff like the Commitment Ceremony is fascinating to me and I hope we continue to see more of it. It would also be awesome to meet a contemporary clan where they still don't use names.

Anyway, that's my thoughts. Never the End!

GargWiki's added an entry on a certain well-known crime-fighter - complete with a picture that isn't of him, but does recall one of the inspirations for "Gargoyles".

Given that in the first few minutes of the film they list Narcissus as a god, it's pretty clear that Hercules wasn't interested in mythological accuracy.

Craig> In fact even though ALF as used in the special was the animated version, Phelous pokes fun at his inclusion with a shorter use of this gem from the sitcom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTnAACXWjEg

MASTERDRAMON - I'd forgotten that one. Thanks for reminding me. (I now recall an episode from the television series where Hercules made the mistake of inviting Bacchus to a party on Phil's island while he was away, which led to the party getting so noisy that it annoyed Poseidon, who sank the island in retaliation. The party was called a "Bacchanal", which definitely provided them with another reason for "Bacchus" rather than "Dionysus".)

Goliath delivering some kind of moral reeks way too much of those intros for the Goliath Chronicles.

On the other hand, now I want to see the Warners do their Wheel of Morality bit and pull out a nonsensical lesson or message that's completely unrelated to drinking or drug abuse.

Matthew > In regards to your assessment of why the Warner Brothers (and the Warner Sister) wouldn't fit into Cartoon All-Stars, I'd say that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, who were in the special, are equally poor fits. Like the Animaniacs, they're notorious smartasses who were toned down to fit the tone of that special. Garfield as well (let's be real, he's a narcissist who couldn't care less about some kid smoking pot). Goliath at least I could see, with Keith David deftly delivering a moral speech. But I guess I'm mostly just tickled by the possibility of Yakko, Wakko & Dot running rampant while Goliath is vaguely irritated by them.
Craig

Todd: They also used the Roman name of Bacchus...probably because it was easier to say than Dionysus.

"It can be a hobby, or really, anything else, but I love when people have fun doing what they love. It’s like they’re sparkling." - Marin Kitagawa

Cartoon All-Stars is an odd duck, it came out during the height of the late 80's/early 90's War on Drugs and early on into the Animation Renaissance. Basically it could only work in that brief period of time.

Give it a few more years and Disney would be high enough in film and television that they wouldn't need to put any of their characters to promote them (and if they wanted to they'd make their own massive crossover without having to share the spotlight with characters from other companies).

If it came out a few years later, I imagine someone from the Nickelodeon brand showing up. It would be hard to see Goliath or any of the gargoyles show up, the special focused mostly on the friendlier-looking mascots. And the Animaniacs? With their...unique brand of humor are more likely to poke fun at the absurdity of the special than preach about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.

Makes me wonder if Elisa ever had to do public speakings on this. Seeing her with the D.A.R.E. program is kind of funny though.

B > Your mention of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue made me wonder what could have been if that special was made a few years later. Might Goliath have been featured alongside the Animaniacs?
Craig

B - Yes, the Greek version of his name would have been more appropriate, given that they were using the Greek names rather than the Roman names for the Olympian gods (except for the episode in the television series that featured Romulus and Remus). Roger Lancelyn Green (the same Roger Lancelyn Green who wrote that retelling of the Arthurian legend that was one of Greg Weisman's major sources) also wrote a retelling of the Greek myths where he firmly wrote "Heracles" rather than "Hercules", saying that they were as different from each other "as Jove and Juno are different from Zeus and Hera", and adding "The Roman names are apt to suggest the artificial epic and the literary conventions of Virgil, Ovid, and their tradition; the true Greek names fling wide the magic casements on the instant".
Todd Jensen

That reminds me of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue. I liked it when I was a kid and it was available at Blockbuster because I like crossovers.

Of course, the worst part was saying Hercules instead of Heracles.

Todd Jensen> Yes, that's what I'm referring to. I didn't like that about the movie, despite or because of my love of Greek mythology.
B
B

First.

To B from last week - Well, the Hades of Disney's "Hercules" was definitely a villain, but if you're talking about the original Greek myths, yes, he wasn't actually villainous in them. It does seem to be a case of people being ready to think the worst of death-gods. ("Gargoyles" itself went down this route with its take on the Banshee in "The Hound of Ulster" - in the original Irish legends, banshees were just death-omens who didn't actually cause death - though it made up for it in how it depicted Anubis in "Grief".)
