MATTHEW - Yes, I noticed that as well, while writing that post.
Todd Jensen

Heh, something I just noticed.
One comic is ending with a confrontation with a dragon. The other is ending with a confrontation with a Dracon. One named Dino no less.
Todd> Agreed. A lot to tackle indeed. However, I think we'll get the usual open ended closure. Perhaps
the dragon thing will end on a bit of a cliffhanger and perhaps Dino's plan will be launched and only concluded at a later date.
. We'll see, but I trust Greg to get us there satisfactorily. Just think how much had to be tied up at the end of "Tyrants"! And we got more than expected there, I think!

I'm still curious about how both "Dark Ages: Alliance" and "Here in Manhattan" will conclude as well, especially because, in both cases, with only one issue left in each, I'm wondering whether there'll be room enough in them for the conclusions. For "Dark Ages: Alliance",
the confrontation with the angry dragon
and for "Here in Manhattan"
Dino Dracon's big back-up scheme, just what the plan was that Matt was going to propose to Chavez about the gargoyles, and Broadway and Angela's commitment ceremony - all in one issue
.
Todd Jensen

Can't wait to see how the Dark Ages miniseries ends next month. Hope they do another for sometime this year.

Convergence sounds fun! I'd totally go if it was closer. Sadly it's just out of reasonable driving and budget range, and I'm afraid of big crowds too.
Kate

Thanks for the news about Convergence. Like Karrin Blue, I probably won't be able to go, but I'll enjoy reading the reports about it. It certainly sounds fitting for the 30th anniversary of "Gargoyles".
Todd Jensen

Glad to hear (or, er, read) that so many (from S8) are coming!
Greg Weisman

Very exciting! I won't be able to attend, so I'll be relying on you guys for the highlights and summaries of all that we learn!

Also, today had the trailer drop for X-Men '97, a sequel series to the X-Men cartoon of the 90s! I suppose they've now got Young Justice beaten on longest hiatus - but hopefully that means there's hope for Gargoyles too, if the stars align.

I was too young to check out the original Gatherings in their heyday, but CONvergence 2014 was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life. My (extraordinarily long) report on that event can be found here:

As for whether I'm going to make a return trip this year? The answer is OF [EXPLETIVE] COURSE!!!

Mind, back in 2014, I was fresh out of college and still living with my folks, so there were certain limits on what I could bear to spend (on autographs, etc.). A decade later, I’m fully financially independent and looking forward to making the most of my time there. I've been planning this trip for over a year now and have tickets, hotel, and plane figured out (only step left is securing a rental car).

So whatever you're bringing, Greg, I’m there for it. Panels? Of course. Signings? Definitely. Radio play? Try to keep me away – though I have a feeling I won’t have a shot at Lexington this time around! XD

I'll even be bringing some of my friends here from Hawaii with me this time...along with reconnecting with my online friends from this Comment Room, most of whom I haven't seen in-person in ten years or even at all. That's the aspect of the event I'm most looking forward to.

(Well...second-most? Cuz Keith. FREAKING. David.)

This has been one of the bright spots on the horizon getting me through some really hard and stressful months. I hope everyone else attending will get to enjoy it as much as I intend to. :)

Thank you again Greg, I missed out on the original comics and and the past Gatherings so there's no way I was missing out on this Kickstarter and no way am I missing out on this CONvergence.
Matthew

Oh, I was so hoping there would be another Fancy Bastard Pie Competition. :--)

Booked my registration and hotel stay months ago, but I still need to decide how I want to get there. In any event, I'm going!

Hey gang,

Now that I'm finally done plugging the Kickstarter, I wanted to take the opportunity to quickly switch over to promoting CONvergence 2024, where we'll be having our official GARGOYLES THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. CONvergence is a fantastic con - not too big, not too small - with much to offer in any given year. But this July 4th-7th, it will also be a GargFan Extravaganza. I'll be there. Keith David will be there. Thom Adcox will be there. Zehra Fazal will be there. Voices from the Eyrie will be doing a live podcast. We'll have a new radio play where fans get to perform right alongside pros. We'll have panels on the creation and development of Gargoyles, on the comics, on Gargoyle Biology & Culture, plus panels on Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice and more. There will even be an after-hours Blue Mug and a Fancy Bastard Pie Competition.

I'd love to see as many Gargoyles Fans - old and new - attend. Everyone is welcome. Every fan is appreciated. We just want to get together to celebrate the show's 30th Birthday.

I know it's not possible for everyone, but I hope at the least that a big percentage of you will look into it and see whether or not attending is viable for you.

Oh, and of course, whether you can personally make it or not, please help us to SPREAD THE WORD!

Thanks!

Greg Weisman

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! And the Kickstarter results feel like a Valentine card for the "Gargoyles" fandom - if one that we gave ourselves, in a sense.
Todd Jensen

Convergence describes a sequence where, for every epsilon greater than zero there exists delta such that-

Wait, let me exit math mode. $

Convergence is an annual comic convention in Minnesota. This year, they are having a con-within-a-con specifically for Gargoyles, sort of a Gathering reunion. Don't know if I'll be able to make it, but I would if I could. https://www.convergence-con.org/

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

What's Convergence? I've seen it brought up here a few times, sounds interesting.
Kate

Love seeing that Kickstarter success. Early on, I was hoping we'd hit $250,000. We blew way past that. Probably a little ungrateful to wish we hit 1 million, but I think it did very well. Exceeded my expectations. And hopefully Disney's too.

Since Phoen mentioned it, who is planning on going to Convergence? I will be there!

Matt
"And, thus, given no choice, we waited..." - Alesand, "The Reach"

What a success! Glad to see those bonkers numbers for the Kickstarter. Got my pledge in about a day before it ended.
Kate

"Reprinting these comics must cost a bundle. You sure you'll still come out ahead?"
"20 times over."

(Okay, 18.5 times, technically.)

Looks like pledges were still updating -- $925,001 from 6,225 backers!!

To think, we were celebrating the news back in 2019 that Gargoyles wasn't forgotten when Disney+ first announced its initial catalogue. No doubt, old fans that revisited the show and new fans that have picked up the series from the streaming service (not to mention the mutual love shown to the NECA figures and other merch, plus the current Dynamite comics in the years since) played a big role in this kickstarter.

But of course, the other big factor was surely Greg Weisman's gauntlet of a press junket for the campaign, as well as anyone that heeded the call to Spread The Word. Wow, just . . . wow. :--)

I can only wonder what the numbers will look like at CONvergence's 30th Anniversary celebration this summer!

Phoenician
Gus: "I always forget you're there." Hooty: "I forget I'm here toooooo."

And the final count stands at 924,891 dollars and 6,223 backers.

Way to go, team.

Todd:
I just figured Coldstone and Coldfire had Egwardo-watching duty since Bronx and Fu-Dog were out on the town, but I guess we'll see . . .
Phoenician
Gus: "I always forget you're there." Hooty: "I forget I'm here toooooo."

Todd: Really interesting speculation.
I thought it was curious, though I couldn't figure out any deeper meaning, that the "Italian Tragedy" was played twice in #5. I tend to suspect that Quest will be set after the Hallowe'en special if only because for the Hallowe'en special to be an annual event, the comics will need to broadly move in parallel to real time. Of course, there are ways around this - we could have a Hallowe'en special set in 97 tracking, say, Thailog; or it could be a good way to do a Timedancer or Dark Ages story. But who knows?

While Othello certainly seems like he could be marked for death, I wonder if it will be as simple as that. He's a soul trapped inside a body of metal and stone - what does death actually look like? Greg isn't averse to killing characters but he's also loathe to be wasteful.

As for Wyvern's name as mentioned last week... as far as I understand, the main difference between a wyvern and a dragon is the number of legs and... well... it is the Dark Ages. It's possible to imagine Wyvern being the progenitor of these legends if for some reason he were to lose his front legs at some point. It seems like wyverns entered heraldic imagery only a few centuries ago so it could be an event in the future... and, who knows, perhaps just as stone sleep offers astonishing healing abilities to gargoyles, with dragons it's even more effective and they can actually regrow limbs over time. (Another possible link here - remember how Constantine's standard was - what I assume to be - a griffin's claw? I wonder if there's another tyrant out there in the timeline who would relish the iconography of a dragon's claw...?)
I note Greg, promoting the Kickstarter, identified his favourite SLG moment as the conversation between the Holy Grail and the Stone of Destiny. Very Greg! I also laughed at him referencing
Monsieur Le Maire
, a character so obscure I had to double-check Gargwiki that there wasn't more about him that I'd missed.

Ed

A thought I recently had about "Gargoyle Quest".
I don't know at the moment whether "Gargoyle Quest" is set before or after the Halloween special. If before, we know that the bulk of the clan will survive the event, given that we saw them in the Halloween special, still alive and living in New York - with two exceptions, Coldstone and Coldfire. They weren't even mentioned.

So, if there are any casualties in the clan's attempt to stop Demona from her latest scheme - and I can imagine casualties to represent the cost of war (like the Magus's death in "Avalon Part Three") - the ColdDuo are the most likely candidates. It would certainly explain their absence from the Halloween special - with the absence of any mention of why they're not shown being a good way to avoid spoilers.

The latest instalment of "The Tale of Three Brothers" in "Gargoyles: Dark Ages" gave me an additional thought on that. Alesand's report on the "proto-Othello" play at the start mentions how the Moor (i.e., Othello) dies, though his honor is barely saved. But in this version, unlike Shakespeare's, Desdemona is still alive at the end, since she is described as being in mourning at the end of the play. Which recently got me wondering - is this a foreshadowing of events in "Gargoyle Quest"? Will Coldstone die, in some sort of "honor barely saved" moment, but with Coldfire still alive, presumably to leave the clan afterwards and go elsewhere, mourning her mate?

It's just a speculation at this point, but I thought I'd share it.
Your article is incredibly helpful, and I am amazed by the depth of insight it provides. Your ability to explain things clearly is commendable. I have shared this informative content with my friends. Thank you!

Less than 24 hours, over 5,000 backers and over 800,000 dollars.

It does warm my heart to see such support and know this isn't the niche fandom that I once thought it was.
