Hey! Okay, here it is, with no long rambles before hand, the first part of my review on the 6th comic book.

Gargoyles: Clan-Building
Part Five: Reunion

Part 1 Pages 1-12

Page 1: Angela looks cute in this picture. I'm glad that it's not a full moon, 'cause the gargoyles have had enough things going on during full moons already. I do want to say that I am very thankful to you for putting up this page on GargWiki with the title and all that in the corner. This way I know how you wanted it to look, though it wasn't a big deal for me not to see it in the comic.

Page 2: Angela looks like she aged or something in the next shot of her with the trio. I think the drawings of them look a bit off, but I really liked the drawings in the rest of the comic. And again with poor Brooklyn. Timedancer can't come soon enough for him.

Page 3: Okay, what's with the swan ice sculpture? Any story behind that one? And it's shown dripping/melting, just to let us know that Thailog isn't freezing in his room. Shari didn't seem much the type to me to be feeding Thailog grapes like a servant. I suppose she's trying to lay low when she is really a crafty one herself. I also have to say that Thailog has some nice taste in decorating, or at least good taste in ordering around someone else to decorate for him.

Page 4: So does Shari only wear her Illuminate pen/necklace when she feels like it, 'cause it's not on her in this comic. I would assume so, since other Illuminate members don't wear theirs all the time either.

Page 5: This is my favorite scene in this comic, the skiff in the big boiling pot. It's funny 'cause you wouldn't expect it, but then how else would Avalon get Goliath & company up in those mountains? And then our heroes go from the heat to the cold…

Page 6: They all look so cute in their coats, especially Bronx. But why's Goliath looking so angry? They haven't been attacked yet. Sangpo needs his eyes checked. Yeti are supposed to be furry things. And they don't have wings. But he realizes this later. I really like how you have Sangpo speaking in a different language, though we read it as English (the first time I read it, I thought they were speaking to each other through their minds psychically). It's a nice touch to make it seem more believable that they're in a different part of the world.

Page 7: Now introducing Master Dawa. Not much here except Dawa stopping the shooting of arrows at the gargoyles, him getting after Sangpo for ordering the shooting, and then his line on how "their souls are fortunate that their bodies are such lousy shots."

Page 8: The gargoyles and Elisa find a cave on this page. That, and Bronx goes after something in the dark cave…

Page 9: You just had to stick a jalapena line in there, huh? (That wasn't a complaint; I like those lines; keep 'em coming!) I might as well mention here that I like the fact that you had Angela in her other outfit that she wore during the Avalon World Tour, and not her new outfit so that it all works out with continuity stuff. Bronx finds what he was looking for in the cave, and, of course, attacks it…

Page 10: Just a fighting page, no dialogue. We do get to see father daughter team work at play here. I like the one red eye, one glowing white eye for the hooded figure. It is a big clue for fans (who didn't already read about it on GargWiki) to know that Coldstone is back.

Page 11: A big picture of Goliath realizing that he is fighting Coldstone.

Page 12: All I have to say is that it happens to the best of us. I was confused a bit, but got the drift of what was going on on this page. Once again, thanks a bunch for putting what you had planned out for this page on GargWiki. It helped me out a lot to see it. It's a warm reunion between Goliath and his rookery brother. Angela gets to meet another rookery father, though I think she seems more interested in biological fathers. I like finding out that Coldstone didn't have to face his "inner demons" alone, and that he gets some help from, what seems to be, a good man named Master Dawa.

There's the first half. I'll get around to the 2nd some time in the near future (I hope).

Thank you for your time and all that you do.

NOVEMBER 16

This day in Gargoyles' Universe History....

November 16th...

1995
The Pack is approached by the Coyote robot's severed head. On Xanatos' behalf, the head offers the Pack the opportunity to be upgraded by using genetic engineering, cybernetics, armor and robotics. They agree to differing degrees. While back at the Eyrie Building, Fox & Xanatos begin a game that will eventually pit the gargoyles and Pack against each other. Meanwhile, Peter & Diane Maza confront Elisa about Derek Maza's disappearance. Elisa talks them out of filing a police report on her brother.

FULL DISCLOSURE/FAIR WARNING

Today, I reviewed the galleys for the Trade Paperback: "Gargoyles: Clan-Building, Volume #1".

It was pretty thrilling. I know that may sound silly, but it was great to see it all together. It felt... substantial.

In the interest of full disclosure and fair warning, I do want to let people know that there isn't a lot in the way of extras.

Normally, we'd have 14 interior pages, not counting the covers to use for extras.

But we ALL forgot that issue #1 was 30 pages long, not 24. So that was 6 pages out right there. 14 pages down to 8.

We do have a wonderful two page original introduction by Wendy Pini, the creator of ELFQUEST. 8 pages down to 6.

But those six pages couldn't run concurrently to give us room for anything substantial, because we needed them to come between each cover and page one of each issue, to make sure the pages faced correctly. Those six pages had to serve this functional purpose.

Three of the pages are new original pin-ups of Goliath, Hudson and Demona. A few of you who have attended conventions with myself and David Hedgecock may have seen them before. David had a very limited amount (only 100 each) printed (at his own expense, I might add) as postcards for our signings. So to most of you, these will be brand new.

The last three pages are images of Broadway, Brooklyn and Elisa that most of you have probably seen before.

I don't know whether this is a shrug or a disappointment. Obviously, I hope all of you buy the Trade. I think it's a great way to read the stories. It's also a great way to introduce new-comers to the property... so maybe this is something you might consider as a holiday gift for loved ones, even if you don't feel you need it for your own collection.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to having it on my shelf.

As answered in a previous question, Gargoyle females (can) bare eggs at 'biological ages 25, 35, and 45'. What about the males; what's the age limit for their potency? Also, does age difference play a great role in choosing a mate or is it mostly love and good genes? Finally, how common is it to take a new mate after a previous mate has passed away?

Greg responds...

Re: the males. Don't know.

Age difference between mates is relatively rare. They usually are the exact same age, give or take a few hours.

Gargoyles RARELY take a new mate after a previous mate passes away.

Hmm, now I'm curious, what parallels do you see between Arthur and Theseus? You've mentioned this before but I don't think you've ever gone into details.

Both of them are bastards in the literal sense, but I think you've said you see Gawain as fitting the archetype itself better than Arthur. Is it because both are credited with trying to make political changes to their kingdoms? Both had angry/estranged sons. But those don't seem to be very strong thematic similarities. Men who became heroes without any supernatural powers (a la Heracles) only to find their past mistakes caught up with them and helped bring about their downfall?

Greg responds...

Compare Arthur's acquisition of Excalibur to Theseus' acquisition of the Sword of Cekrops.

Compare their fathers and fatherings.

Compare the ideals by which they attempted to run their kingdoms.

And as you noted...

Compare their sons.

Compare their abillities.

Compare their downfalls.

I don't at all get why you don't see strong thematic similarities.

Okay, you've said that Angela and Broadway will raise their children the Gargoyle way. But all three are named after the Arthurian tales, not assuming that they named them themselves, but wouldn't that be a bit coincidental? I mean I could understand if all the clutch was named after the Arthurian but there are only so many names in the Arthurian tales, and three full clutches at that. With that said the three are named after the main characters (Merlin aside). So how can you explain that?

Also with Angela's parental issues. Being raised with Tom as her adopted father and Kathrine as her adpotive mother she would seem to prefer raising her children as she was raised. I do realize that part of it would be because Kathrine, Tom, and Magus were the only adults she could identify with but when she found out Goliath was her father she was extremely insistant that she be recognized by him. Angela also wanted a relationship with Demona despite her past. Not only that she wanted to help Demona specifically because she was her mother. So how would she cope with not recognizing her children or her children not recognizing her? Seems to me that she would want the close relationship with her kids as she had (or attempted to have) with her parents.

Greg responds...

There are HUNDREDS of names in Arthurian legend. HUNDREDS. And I COULD explain it a hundred ways. But I choose not to at this time.

What makes you think that Angela won't have a close relationship with her kids, however they're raised?

In issue #3 of the "Gargoyles" comic book series, we first saw Illuminati members greeting each other with the words "Thirty-six." "Thirty-two." This got a lot of attention from the readers, of course, and led to many speculations over what the significance of those two numbers were. Then, in #5, we learned their significance: they were the ranks of the Illuminati members in question.

Have you ever regretted revealing the answer to that new mystery of the Gargoyles Universe so quickly, just two issues later? Or do you feel happy about the pacing with which you resolved that issue?

Greg responds...

I'm pretty happy with it.

Hey Greg
I was woundering since the Winx Club season is over why not reshow W.I.T.C.H on Fox and see how it the audience take it, Besides girls will need to watch something and what better show than W.I.T.C.H its almost like Winx Club. It just an idea to think about

Greg responds...

You know it's totally not up to me, right?

But beyond that, Disney owns WITCH. It seems unlikely they'd let Fox air it.
