Hi Greg,

I loved your work on Young Justice and I would love to see more of your work (especially if it involves DC).

1. I wanted to ask if DC or any higher ups would approve it, would you ever consider writing about the formation of the Justice League on Earth-16? I would love to hear about the formation of the Justice League and their battle with the seven Appelaxian invaders.

2. I also wanted to ask where Blue Beetle's physical constructs came from? Are they organic materials produced by the bettle?

Thank you for keeping up with your questions! I raelly appreciate all of the answers you provided to flesh out Earth-16 and I hope to keep up with your future work.

Greg responds...

1. Love to tell this story.

2. They're built from nanotechnology.

Hi, Greg.
A few weeks ago I asked when did Dick and Zatanna broke up, and now i realize that you are probably not going to give me an exact date. So the question are:

1) Did they broke up before or after Legacy?
2) You said that Batman offered to reveal his secret identity to Zatanna and asked her to move to the manor. We know that she moved to the Cave but did Bruce told her his identity anyway?
3) You also said that Nightwing hides his identity from newbies. Does that mean that the original team knows? And Troia and Bumblebee?
4) Is Zatanna's birthday the same as in the original comics? (May 20th)
5) And if the answer to my second question is no, did Zatanna find out Dick's identity before the other because they were dating?

Thanks for your time and sorry if they are Asked and Answered, Spoiler Request or something

Greg responds...

1. No spoilers.

2. No.

3. As of season two, yes.

3a. No spoilers.

4. I don't know.

5. That suggests an order of events that I don't want to confirm or deny.

I have some questions about Young Justice.

1. By year 5, the original team found out Dick was Nightwing. When did they find out? And in what order?

2. Did Barbara join the team right after she became batgirl or did she wait a year or 2?

3. When did wally and artemis move to Palo Alto together and attend standford? When did they adopt their dog Brucely?

4. Did wally and Artemis ever met the others parent(s), if so when? Because artemis seems to know Wally's parents by the end of season 2 and wally mentions how cool Artemis' mom is in YJ legacy?

Greg responds...

1. No spoilers.

2. No spoilers.

3a. They were both in the dorms their freshman year. Wally was in Twain. Artemis was in Toyon. (How's that for references that only a Stanford alum will appreciate?)

3b. No spoilers.

4a. Yes, of course. You saw Wally with Artemis' mom, and Artemis with Wally's parents.

4b. No spoilers.

Hi Greg; so after reviewing some of the questions related to Artemis and Nightwing, I ran across this:

"Anyway, it's unfortunate, but all of Dick Grayson's digital photos were erased during the E.M.P. that Artemis set off in "Homefront". Plus, fans forbid us from allowing Dick to laugh anymore in Season Two. We received death threats.
I would have thought that was obvious from watching the show. I mean, dude, note the timestamp."

I wanted to ask about that particular picture that Dick trolled/snapped of himself with Artemis during her first day at hew new school. I get that the EMP pretty much eliminated all the data from Dick's stuff, presumably with this picture included but we see it appear again in "Depths" for YJ:I.

So, to recapitulate the question: Given that the EMP still knocked everything out, it seems that Dick still has that particular image. Did he ever get to laugh about it with Artemis?

Greg responds...

I can't tell from what you've quoted above, but if I had to guess, you're referring to a post I made on April Fool's Day.

Hi Greg, I just had a question about Klarion. I have read that he's supposedly the most powerful member of The Light and it seems his successes against the Team reflect this. The only person portrayed as capable enough to stop him is Dr. Fate, and so I had two questions:

1: Because the Justice League represents/maintains order, why had Klarion not made it his goal to annihilate them before the induction of Dr. Fate? It seems there was a period of time where Kent Nelson was out of the game and the mask was unused.

2: Is there anyone on the team (as far as season two) who is capable of handling Klarion? I feel like there was little potential to demonstrate this as Klarion was assumed to be overly powerful and relegated to support roles for The Light.

Thank you and I miss Young Justice!

Greg responds...

1. Klarion isn't the most... focused of villains.

2. Depends on circumstances.

Hi Greg,
I'm a huge fan of Young Justice, as I'm sure you hear all the time, but really, this world that you've built truly is a masterpiece. My sort of "theme" for this post is about potential ideas that ultimately did not end up being included in the run of the show (obviously doing my very, very best to avoid requesting SPOILERS, NO COMMENT. ;))

1.) The romantic relationships you crafted for the characters are phenomenal, and showcase a wide range of feelings from true love, to teen lust. Did you ever have a thought of including a potentially gay/lesbian character or relationship? (To avoid spoilers, this is directed solely at characters that you have decided definitively are NOT gay, but could have been at one point in the creative process.)
1a. If you had had such plans for a character/relationship, do you think this would be something Cartoon Network would have been okay with?

2.) Did you know from the beginning of the show, where you wanted Wally's arc to end up, culminating in his heroic sacrifice at the end of Invasion? I ask this primarily because, what with his role in the comics, there was a glaring potential other option available that you guys chose not to explore. I found this particularly interesting at the beginning of Invasion when we learned that Rocket and Zatanna had joined the League, and at the end of Invasion, with Wally's death. With Zatanna and Wally, as the second Flash, both being members of the League in the comics, it would have been an interesting segue to have them be the two team members that moved up to the League during the 5-Year Gap. Was this ever considered? Likewise, in the comics, Barry Allen heroically sacrificed himself in a (well actually THE) crisis, leaving Wally to become Flash and Bart to eventually become his Kid Flash. Was this considered as a possibility for the ending of Invasion?

3.) What led you to choose Batman for season 1, Captain Atom for season 2, and Black Canary for the potential season 3 as the Leaders of the League? Were other members in consideration at different times for different reasons, or did you have a pretty clear idea of who you wanted in charge?
Two things I found particularly interesting about how you handled the leadership of the league:
3a. How Dick and Bruce never lead the team and the League side-by-side, with Aqualad leading the team under Batman, and Nightwing leading the team alongside Captian Atom. Was this a conscious choice/deciding factor in the selection of leaders for both teams?
3b. How Captain Atom, a generally "less-known" member of the League (compared to say Aquaman, Hal, Barry, Black Canary, or Green Arrow, of the members that did not go to Rimbor) was selected as League leader for Season 2. I'm wondering both, how you came to the decision to make Captain Atom leader of the League during Invasion, and also, what is his status with the public on Earth-16? Is he as "famous" as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the others?

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at all these fan questions and share your ideas with us, it's a really amazing thing that you do, especially with the amount of rude or negative posts I've seen crop up on here. (Also, I am very sorry for how long this ended up being...)

Greg responds...

1. Um, I'm honestly not sure I understand the question. Why would I consider gay/lesbian relationships for characters who were not gay or lesbian? If you are asking whether we considered depicting a gay or lesbian relationship, the answer is yes. But I asked, and TPTB were not ready to depict that openly on television. So the best we could do was write consistently with what we believed.

1a. I vaguely recall that our WB exec asked CN, and they said no. But it's a while ago, and I'm not sure. I do recall talking to WB about it.

2. All sorts of things were considered. But we knew early on in Season One that we wanted Artemis and Wally to retire between seasons. And very early in the development of Season Two, we decided where we were going with Wally by the end of Season Two.

3. Batman made sense for us for Season One, given what his role was going to be with the kids that season. Plus, you know, he's Batman. My initial suggestion for Season Two was Black Canary, but Brandon felt that having the military Captain Atom as leader would work better for Invasion, which made sense. And we all liked Canary taking over at the end. All three of those characters had been leaders of the League at different points in pre-New 52 continuity.

3a. Not that I recall. The Team had its own leadership issues, of course, but I believe we considered those separately.

3b. See above. Also, Captain Atom was leader of the super-heroes during DC's own INVASION comic book series, so that felt right. And, he's pretty famous. Maybe not as famous as Superman and Wonder Woman - but probably more famous to the non-Gotham general public than Batman. Captain Atom has a publicist.

Hello, Mr. Weisman.

I had a question regarding the adaptation of original characters from television to their comic book counterparts. One of the more displayed occurrences of the comic book integrating a character from a television series was with DC comics integrating Harley Quinn from the Batman: The Animated Series. Since you had similar experience when the Aqualad character you created in conjunction with Brandon Vietti and Phil Bourassa became the official Aqualad of the DC comics universe, I thought you could answer a few questions on the subject.

1. What is the official process a comic book marketing company must use in order for its writers to begin using an original character? Do representatives from the comic book corporations contact writers from the television program and make negotiate to gain permission from you and other important figure heads on the television program?

2. How long does the process take for the comic book corporation to acquire all of the rights to the character and include the individual in the comic books?

3. How do these companies determine what makes an original character worthy of being integrated into the comic book continuity of these fictional universes? Since the version of the Aqualad character you created became the official one in the DC Comics universe, I imagine that the officials representing the comic book company would have explained what properties stood out the most.

4. Which party retains the copyright stemming from the creation of the character?

5. What are the chances that another one of your original characters from your Young Justice series, Green Beetle, will be adapted for the DC Comics continuity? After seeing the show, I was very surprised to learn everything about the character had not already been adapted from the comic books, but was an original creation on your part. Despite the limited screen time compared to some of the main characters, the character was fleshed-out and well-developed. I thought you had put enough creativity for the character to make a jump to the comic book continuity.

Thank you for your time.

Greg responds...

1. I'm not too comfortable answering this generically. I'm sure every case is unique. So I can only speak to examples I've been involved with, specifically - as you mentioned - Aqualad. In that case, the thing to keep in mind is that no one employed on the production has any rights in ANY of the characters we create. It's all being done under a "Work For Hire" contract, which means that Time-Warner, the company that owns DC Comics, Warner Bros Animation and Cartoon Network, owns all our work product outright. So they don't need our permission to use characters they already own, including Aqualad, which (a) was based at least in part on the existing Aqualad that they already owned and (b) they owned from the moment the idea for the new version came out of our heads, pens, tablets and keyboards. Geoff Johns did contact us and talk to us about the details of our version. He then went off and did his own revision on that for DC Comics.

2. See above. They already owned it. So it took NO time.

3. I think Geoff just liked the character - and/or thought he could do something with him - but you'd really have to ask him.

4. There are no parties. There is only one big corporation with multiple divisions.

5. I think it's unlikely, because if it didn't happen back when the show was on the air, why would it happen now?

4: Why has no Zeta-Tube been built on Mars?

2. Grown, yes. Mass-produced, no.

3. Not that easy to get here. Even harder to get back.

4. Until Sardath accidentally brought Adam Strange to Rann, it wasn't thought that a Zeta-Tube would work over that kind of distance. As you saw on the show, simply establishing communication between the two planets is controversial. Allowing teleportation between the worlds isn't going to be commonplace anytime soon.

First off all I want to point out how much I love young justice and spectacular spider-man and how thankful I am to you and your teams for creating such wonderful stories that I hope will someday continue. But I have some questions about Young Justice.
1. How old is Troia?
2. Do you think how the characters fought in Young Justice Legacy is pretty close to how they would have fought in the show or comics? I ask this because I really enjoyed playing as Rocket but she could "shoot" a sort-of energy blast attack and I remember you saying from a long time ago that Rocket could only fly and create force bubbles, or did she learn this ability over the five year gap?
3. Have you talked to Brandon about Artemis, Zatanna, Miss Martian, and Wonder girl appearing in Scooby Doo Wrestlemania? Does that story take place on Earth-16
4. Did you have story arcs planned for some of the lesser established characters like Rocket and Tempest, that you would have told if you had gotten more episodes or comics?
5. One of Batgirl's alternate costumes on Young Justice Legacy is a Batwoman costume, does that mean Batwoman exists on Earth-16
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

2. The game took some liberties with the characters' powers.

Hi, Greg! This may be a little late, (or, well, very late), but I wanted to tell you that I'm a big fan of your work. (Though, you've probably heard that a lot.)

You did a great job with Young Justice, (and, I'm sure, your other works). You, Brandon, and all of the other people who put there all into collaborating and working on the show. It was one of the most well done and tasteful cartoons I've ever seen; entertaining, suspenseful, and worth watching. I was sorry to see it go, and I still have high hopes for a third season some time in the future.

Again, you, (and the others, because I don't want to sell them short), did a great job with the show. I can't imagine how hard it is to take DC comic characters, (iconic ones like 'Nightwing' and 'Kid Flash' and countless others), and to try and put them into an alternate timeline, making them similar but different, too. You all did a fantastic job with it, though.

I'm sorry that I can't say more, (but it would probably all sound the same with the general them of 'I love Young Justice). I just want you to know that you guys made me week(s) with your episodes, so, thank you for all of the time and hard work you all put into Young Justice, because it definitely showed and was truly a high caliber show.

(Also, I just found out that you wrote a book! "Rain of the Ghosts", right? I'll definitely check it out; I've heard great things about it, so I'll make sure to leave my own reviews and recommend it to my friends, too! Keep up the fantastic work, and good luck on 'Rebels' ,too!)

Greg responds...

Thank you for the kind words.

And please do check out RAIN OF THE GHOSTS and its sequel SPIRITS OF ASH AND FOAM. Both are now available at bookstores, on Amazon, etc. Plus, I'm told (however you purchased it) that reviews on Amazon are VERY helpful. Especially if you liked it. ;)

Hey Greg this is a followup question to a question I asked a year and a half ago.
Here's that post: http://s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=17988

I didn't mean for that to come across as mean spirited.

In my defense I did say that I would retract the criticism if it was because Dick did NOT want Wally to participate.

Also in my defense I didn't make the assumption that Wally was in the loop blindly.
I made that assumption based on a couple observations, during his arguement with Dick he mentioned how Dick almost died and that 3 more members of The Team were taken. All of those things true. So how could he have known that unless he was in the loop with Dick in some way?
Also if Wally was supposed to be playing "mourning boyfriend" and keeping his distance from the team, why would he and Dick choose to meet at a place where a League or team member could easily just walk in and see Wally interacting with a JL or Team member when they are supposed to think he is mourning, especially since there was no reason that them meeting up HAD TO happen at the Hall of Justice?

I can buy that Dick wanted Wally to play mourning boyfriend and might not have been sharing anything with Wally, but the things I mentioned above seemingly contradict that.

Greg responds...

Well, okay.

But none of that seems significant to me. We came in mid-conversation, didn't we? (I'll admit it's been awhile.) So the fact that some of the blanks were already filled in, seems like a non-issue.

And that was after hours at the HoJ. Yeah, sure someone with authorization might have walked in, but not without the computer shouting a warning. As for why they were meeting there, things were in ... shall we say, disarray.

But to be fair, I also may have had a chip on my shoulder about Wally. Though it's clear that the vast majority of our viewers adored the guy, ASK GREG has gotten more than it's fair share of Wally-Disparagers, and I may have reacted to the cumulative effect of that in my response to you.

In any case, let's all move on.

Hi Greg!
I'm a big fan of Young Justice. As a comic book reader I was really happy with how you portrayed Cheshire and her relationship with Roy in general. This couple is really interesting and it's a shame their relationship got so little screen time. Anyway I have some questions and I'd be really happy if you could answer them
1.Can you tell me when approximately Jade and Roy became a couple? Was it before or after Jade helped Roy escape from the Shadows?
2.Approximately how long they were a couple before they got married?
3.When they were in Tibet to rescue Speedy was everything already back to normal between them as a couple?
4.Does Roy love Jade as much as she loves him? I mean, in the Journals he so casually mentioned that they tied the knot.
5.How does the relationship between Roy and his parents-in-law look like? Does Sportsmaster care for his granddaughter?

I hope that's not too much. Thank you in advance :)

Greg responds...

1. This was all revealed in the Young Justice Legacy video game. If video games aren't your thing, I believe they've compiled all that information at the Young Justice Wiki, here: http://youngjustice.wikia.com/wiki/Young_Justice_Wiki.

2. See above.

3. "Normal" is not a word I'd EVER use for their relationship.

4. Wait, so you've read the journals? Then you already know the answers to these questions 1 and 2, right? Anyway, I think he loves her and she loves him, but neither of them are particularly optimistic about the long term prospects for their relationship.

5. Does Sportsmaster care for anyone? Roy's relationship with his mother-in-law is fine. Roy's relationship with his father-in-law is not ideal, but can you blame him?

Mr. Weisman,

I have to admit that despite Wally being my favorite DC character that I had a love/hate relationship with Young Justice's version of the character (or perhaps with the execution of his story?). And I've noticed this is a pretty common feeling within the fandom as Wally is not only one of the more popular characters from the show, but he's also near the top when it comes to the most disliked as well.

Anyway, someone brought up some of the big perceived flaws about Wally's character that I had, and you said they chose to interpret Wally in the most negative light possible, and that wasn't how you guys saw him. So would it be okay to ask how you guys viewed Wally and his story? I'm not asking you to go into great detail, but maybe some sort of general overview? I know that certain things or ideas don't always translate over onto the show as well as people would like for a number of legitimate reasons (or people like myself just miss things), so I'm curious how you viewed Wally and his story.

Greg responds...

I appreciate the reasoned tone of your request, truly. But I've written the answer to it up OVER AND OVER. (And over.) So take a look at the archives. It's all there at this point.
