Here's a podcast and a half I did...

It's that time again:
Blather
So in a tryce came the documentary depicting many a Chinese doll and also the three wise men (who may or may not have been kings) that needed sixty-two dollars between them to redeem the coupon, which offered up solace and not a little irony to anyone who hadn't yet seen the crew chewing on leaves that weren't tobacco, but might have been sage and still left horrible stains in the dirt floor of the lean-to where I left my ski poles after the overnight with the cranes that were kept on the lake domestically for the purpose of tourism but who could also speak Latin on occasion when prompted by offers of cheese or jerky -- though not just any jerky, it had to be salmon jerky -- which isn't always easy to come by when you've agreed to leave before closing on summer days in the springtime of your life, which has been known to last longer in people who aren't concerned about under-inebriation or over-intoxication or both: it's the balance which is everything when nothing else will do and no one else will participate in the extravaganza that's been created by the giant invisible flying monkey brain that is modern life in the Twenty-First Century, counting since the (approximate) birth of Christ -- as long as the lack of the number zero doesn't disturb your math sensibilities as, frankly, it does mine, though I like to think I've made peace with that and with the Skrull too, since I haven't picked up an issue of that book in about nine years, which wasn't an intentional or explicit act of cold turkey so much as a sliding away followed by a none-too-impressive epiphany -- far from the best epiphany I've ever had, say, compared to Tintagel or Lego, not to mention the birth of certain children, which couldn't get more personal than the zany antics of the semi-erotic flea circus, which used to travel the stars waiting for an invitation to land at your door, since you are the personal target of the extra-lunar probe that counted all the seahorses that Aquaman used to make the giant seahorse that he could actually ride, though no faster than he could swim himself on his own power -- and no, we're not talking Super Friends here, but something older, more primal, something that was born back when the Ptero-whatever streaked across the sky leaving behind contrails made not of smoke but of pure and unadulterated grace, a commodity in which we are sorely shy as a planet, and yet which we find in the most unlikley of places, including but not limited to contracts which dictate how we will interact with each other but do it in such a way that no normal human being could possibly wrap their heads around the language and internalize the meaning, which we declare to be progress or civilization and which is not meant as a criticism so much as a detachment of troopers marching on a hill that you wouldn't pay five ducats -- FIVE! -- to buy yourself, or so I told myself and Hamlet night after night, but now Hamlet is a Thief on FX and I haven't seen him face to face in over twenty years, which sometimes seems quite normal but sometimes blows me away, not that I want to move backwards at all, though I'm not sure that I'm truly moving forward and I'm convinced I'm not moving sideways, though the metaphor of the sidewinder is appealing, not in the cliché sense of something sinister and left-handed, though I do throw with my left hand, I can bowl just as badly with either hand, and even though I'm 42, I quite prefer to have bumpers instead of gutters, where the rain gets backed up and sometimes flows over the lip and creates leaks in the roof and drips, drips, drips down into the shiny metal bowl that's usually used for something much more pleasant like mixing cookie dough to create chewy wonderful ... well.. cookies (I mean "duh") that taste a little bit like home even when you are home and it is raining, or maybe ESPECIALLY when you are home and it is raining and the water overflows and the ocean fills and the giant seahorse peaks out and winks at the cranes, which is exactly what the documentary crew was hoping to capture when they first took out their cameras and shot the whole thing from three different angles across six different days and still never saw the giant invisible flying monkey brain, because it was, to put it mildly, invisible.
Hi Greg,
Thank you so much for the most wonderful show ever, I'm a huge fan of Young Justice.
Maybe it's kind of weird to ask or even to answer but I'd like to know if Wally and Artemis were the first for each other?
First what?
I just realized that although Halcyon Renard calls Fox "Janine", Titania/Anastasia calls her Fox. Is that just because she has less of a nostalgic "our little girl" image of Fox, or is it easier for her because as a shapeshifter she's used to using multiple names herself?
That's another one I'm happy to leave to fan interpretation.
Why did Sevarius leave Gen-U-Tech for Nightstone Unlimited? Xanatos didn't want to lose him as a resource and he didn't become more ethical. Did Demona and Sevarius offer him more money? If so, isn't Xanatos rich enough to give Sevarius a raise? Did he decide to limit Sevarius' creative freedom? What happened?
I'll leave the answer to that to your interpretation.
In "Terrors" we learn that Mr. Freeze petitioned to be declared legally sane so that he would be sent o Belle Reve. Did the Light have something to do with that petition being granted?
Maybe. Not necessarily. It doesn't matter much to me.
The word "wrought" is used on YJ quite a few times. More than I've heard on other media. Is there any reason why you like it? I thought it was a bit archaic. Especially when it is used to mean "created by means other than manually".
I like a little archaic and arcane language on occasion. Still, I'd have to see which episodes it appeared in to even know if it was me who put it in.
Hello, Greg. I've got a few related questions which I hope you can answer.
1. In the "Gargoyles" universe, do mortal sorcerers ever take familiars.
2. If so, what is the nature of the relationship between the sorcerer and their familiar?
3. What kind of creature or being is the familiar, typically?
Thanks!
1. Ever? Sure.
2. One of familiarity.
3. Same as in traditional literature, generally.
Hi Greg, I was just wondering, how do you react to negative criticism on a show you worked on before like all those people who heavily criticized something you that you and your team liked, like the Joker in Young Justice for example? Would you stick to the creative choice despite how the majority of the audience did not approve or would you make changes to that criticism even if you thought it was fine the way it was.
I know I'm not obligated to advice the creator what to change or not not to change, I am merely asking how the creative team would react in this situation, because I too am learning in production management and how to plan construction for a form of entertainment media.
It would really help,
I have to stick to my guns. In part because of the long lagtime between production and airing. And in part because I need to maintain my passion for a project. If I'm taking notes from everyone who can make a suggestion on the internet, I'll (a) never get anything done and (b) quickly lose my passion for the project.
If I had listened to all the YJ criticism that came down the pike early on, I would have, for example, cut Miss Martian, Superboy and Kid Flash from the series. I would have made the season one Robin Tim Drake and not Dick Grayson, which means we would never have gotten Nightwing in Season Two. I would have lost Dick's laughter and his wordplay. Aqualad would be another white guy and not the son of Black Manta. Etc. Etc. Etc.
People don't know what we have planned, and they react. Often negatively - especially on the internet - to things that they will eventually love if we and they are patient.
1) New Olympians hate and fear humans and they respect gargoyles. So how do they feel about the Third Race?
2) Are the New Olympians aware of their origins? By that I mean, do they know that they are a hybrid race of the Children of Mab and mortal humans/animals?
3) So Boreas decided that Elisa would have to remain on New Olympus in order to keep their secret. This seems a little short sighted on Boreas' part. I mean, no sooner had this happened did Elisa almost get lynched on the street. Did he really feel that Elisa's presence could be tolerated by the other N.O?
4) When was the last time any of the New Olympians had any contact with the N.O gargoyles clan? From I've heard, that clan might be the most isolated clan of the series. I mean do they ever in fact have any contact with anyone beyond themselves? Do they have or ever had, even one "Elisa" of their own?
5) So New Olympians can develop their own powers. Is Boreas the "most" powerful, as the "Oberon" of the new Olympians?
1. Probably suspicious.
2. Up to a point.
3. Her presence in prison? Yes, he did.
4. No Spoilers.
5. He's powerful. Whether he's MOST powerful is debatable.
How do you feel about the next DEATH BATTLE episode with X-Men's Beast and Goliath? Who do you think would win?
I can't figure out why they would fight.
1) Were Mongul's & Kylstar's home worlds conquered by the same tyrant? I ask because they both appeared to have the same idea of conquering the entire galaxy first before striking back against their enemy, they just went about it differently, implying whoever they were up against was above & beyond powerful to require that many resources to defeat...Scary stuff O_O
2) Regardless of whether Mongul & Kylstar shared a common foe, did you have an identity or identities in mind for the baddy or baddies who conquered their worlds? Or was Young Justice canceled before you could decide on the identities of the baddies who overthrew Mongul & enslaved Kylstar's people?
P,S, thanks for Gargoyles, Spectacular Spiderman, & Young Justice, sorry they were cancelled in their prime, they were all seriously amazing shows that deserved to last longer. Thanks for the wonderful storytelling & memorable characters :D
1. Scary indeed. I'm afraid the answer would be a spoiler, which I have a policy against. But I will say, it wasn't a coincidence or inattention that led us to use the idea for both characters.
2. We know.
3. Thanks. #KeepBingingYJ It doesn't have to be over.
Now that Rain of the ghosts is done, what next big/not-so-big project should we expect next? Are you looking to present a new IP to the big studio-execs or go through the hassle of kickstarter again?
I'm never doing Kickstarter again.
Right now, I'm working at Nick Jr. on Shimmer and Shine, and for Scholastic and Blizzard on World of Warcraft: Traveler.
If you had all the time in the world to work on the second seasons of your TV Series such as:
Gargoyles
Max Steel
Young Justice
and The Spectacular Spiderman,
What exactly (from the specifics to not-so-specific) would you change/alter them?
Change or alter? Nothing. Even errors and missed opportunities are errors and missed opportunities I can live with.
1) How strong and invulnerable is Vandal Savage compared to other super powered characters in Young Justice? Is he on Mammoth's/Superboy's/Blockbuster's level or weaker, like Bane's? His displays of strength during his attempts to delay Kid Flash's heart delivery mission were pretty impressive.
2) Did Vandal Savage know Mongul personally and that's why he listened to him on Rimbor? Or was he just a random stranger to him who knew what to say to set him off?
1. He is pretty impressive. But his main ability is constant healing and repair. He can push his considerable muscles beyond the breaking point, because they will heal up.
2. For the time being, I'll let you judge that for yourself. Beyond that: No Spoilers.
Based on how you wrote the TMNT 2012 episode "Eyes of the Chimera," I have a strange feeling you like the pairing of Leonardo and April.
Am I right?
I know it's going to take a while for a response, so I'm saying this now.
And on that subject, I might as well ask, do you like her with anyone else?
I'm not sure what you mean. The pairing was generated by Leonardo's injury putting him in a position of being disabled, as she was somewhat mystically blinded.
why does everything have to happen so terrible for the puck.. it's bad enough what happened during the gathering part 2... no more powers, and locked as owen... can not be himself except when training or protecting alex... sucks,..but now with 2158 and gargs 2198.. alex is gone and he is just locked as owen?!?! really??? .. c'mon why does it have to suck so bad for him. what is your beef with puck? he barley was in the series, he was not in the comics, you're killing me man. we all need more puck in our lives. my question is why do you make it suck so hard for puck.
I tend to make things hard on ALL the characters. It's called "DRAMA".
Why is Speedy "Speedy" and not something more obviously archery-related?
Why is Robin "Robin" and not something more obviously bat-related?
Back in the day, things weren't quite so rigid.
Mr. Weisman,
1. What is your opinion on the DC Universe Original Animated Movie, Justice League: Gods and Monsters?
2. Have you ever considered doing a DC Universe Original Animated Movie of your own?
1. Haven't seen it.
2. I'd love to. But it's not up to me.
Hi there, big fan of your show. I'd been hearing so much praise but I was never big on the superhero scene. Finally got roped in when my boyfriend sat me down to watch it, and I marathoned it in two nights. Fantastic work and completely enthralling.
Before I ask my questions I must add in that I am big on the shipping side of things, so I have "shipping goggles" on, so to speak. I really like Conner and M'gann's relationship: it's grown to something wonderfully complex in season 2, and a pretty realistic one at that. I'm interested in knowing your thoughts on creating this relationship, both as a study and as a learning experience as someone who aspires to be a writer one day. And so here are my questions.
1. As I noticed, their relationship always seemed pretty integral to the plot (as opposed to, say, Wally and Artemis) both in season 1, and definitely in season 2. Was the show conceived to portray such a relationship, or did it grow to fruition after deciding on their character arcs?
2. In that same vein, was the subplot of season 2 concerning M'gann and her continuous (ab)use of her powers there from the beginning of development and, by extension, act as a means to develop their relationship?
3. Was it always planned for M'gann and Conner to split? What I mean is, as soon as you knew you were getting a second season, were they already doomed to fail?
4. At the end of the events in episode 11, if it weren't for Conner being there would M'gann be compromised and still be frozen in the ice?
5. I know Superboy and Wondergirl are a couple in the comicverse. As Cassie is obviously an item with Tim, it may be moot now. But during development, was it ever considered that Conner and Cassie would follow their comicbook selves and move toward a relationship?
Thank you again, for both creating the show and entertaining my heavy "shipping" questions. I'm always interested to hear what you think / your process was when developing this relationship.
1. The whole thing is pretty organic in its creation. It's a chicken and the egg thing. We built it all together.
2. Maybe not all the specifics, but we knew we were going to demonstrate how powerful she was in Season One (in "Bereft" and "Failsafe," for example) and that it would become a problem down the road.
3. Well, doomed to have already failed, I suppose. Long term, who knows? (Well, Brandon and I know, but we're not telling.)
4. It depends what you mean by compromised. I think Conner gave Megan the jolt she needed to free herself, but she might have managed it on her own.
5. No. Keep in mind that initially, Cassie was one of the few characters who were off-limits to us. So when we started there was literally no way she could be paired with Conner. By the time we received permission to use her it was too late to put her into Season One. We wanted her in Season Two, but that made her considerably younger than where Conner's headspace would be in Season Two.
In "Misplaced" the being called Sabbac was mentioned. Was this Timothy Karnes (or Barnes) or Ishmael Gregor?
No Spoilers.
Out of curiosity, do Tim and Dick consider each other brothers? They have the same foster dad and kick-butt butler but I'm curious. I mean I say "my best friends are like siblings" and don't get me wrong; I love them like my own, but they're not an integral part of my family life, so I don't consider them actual siblings, or refer to them as siblings to other people. Because even though it feels that way, it wouldn't make sense for me personally to refer to them as such. So do Tim and Dick just feel brotherly towards each other, or do they actually consider and refer to each other their brother, and do they express this to others (ie, has Dick mention in passing that he has a younger brother in high school)? Would it make "sense" to them, or would it feel a little off? Thank you for your time!
They consider each other family, for sure. The relationship is of course fraternal, but I don't know that they've felt a need to label it.
Hi, again.
You know how Superboy supposedly dumped M'Gann because he disagreed with the way she used her psychic powers and then she began a relationship with La'gaan?
I would like to know how M'Gann got to know La'gaan and how they got together, if that's okay.
Thanks
See our companion comics. They're available on Comixology or iTunes. The story (or at least the start of it) is in there.
Thanks for reading my question, Mr Weisman I'm a HUGE fan of Young Justice! It shouldn't be of any trouble.
If Aquaman knew that Kaldur's biological father was Black Manta and had kept this a secret,
1) How did Aquaman know?
2) How did Kaldur find out and use this to go undercover? Surely Manta would've thought this suspicious
3) Also, did Manta know Kaldur was his son?
1. No Spoilers.
2. No Spoilers.
3. Yes.
Did Batgirl meet the second robin Jason Todd?
No Spoilers.
So I've been haunting the GargWiki and, after swimming through the archives, I thought I'd ask an actual question (been a while, it's mostly been reviews these last few years).
In Gargoyles, what is (to borrow Anton's phrasing from "The Lost") Glasses's true name?
(I'm also a bit curious as to why there's such little sign of anybody else ever asking about this tidbit . . . closest I found was this silly hypothetical: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=9484)
No spoilers.
If all things are true in the Gargoyles universe, and Nessie exists, does that mean that other cryptids and fearsome critters like drop-bears, jackalopes, and Sasquatch exist in your plans?
No Spoilers.
How did Miss Martian fell when Garfield first got his power to turn into animals? How did Garfield fell about it?
I'll leave that to your imagination or to future flashbacks. No Spoilers.

Really had a great time all last week at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.
Went up with my dad, daughter, son and a couple of friends. We saw eight plays in four days, and every single one was - at minimum - highly enjoyable. And some just blew me away.
We saw:
Great Expectations
Roe
Twelfth Night
The Wiz
The River Bride
The Winter's Tale
Vietgone
Hamlet
Some truly amazing work. Plan on going back in September to see the three plays we missed: Yeomen of the Guard, Richard II, Timon of Athens.
Hey Greg, just found this place after looking for a way to contact you, and figured I'd do just that! I'm a big fan of Gargoyles; the universe you've created is absolutely incredible, and the tale you've told in it masterfully crafted.
I've only just managed to get my hands on the collected volumes of the comics (I've only gotten my copy of Vol. 1 as of yet, actually, so I'm not quite at the end yet!), but I'm already sad that there's not much more for me to see. And so, I come here to ask you simple question: Is there anything Gargoyles related in the works at this time? And if not, are you still pulling to get the stories you want to tell told in some form someday?
There isn't yet. But hopes are high with the comic book license now at Joe Books. And I NEVER stop pulling to tell more Gargoyles stories.
Did Garfield start going barefoot full time before or after his got his ability to change into animals?
After, I guess.
1. What is the name of the school that Billy Batson attended during Team Year 0?
2. What is the name of the school that Billy Batson attended during Team Year 2?
3. What is the name of the school that Billy Batson attendees during Team Year 6?
1. Don't know.
2. Don't know.
3. Don't know.
This might seem like a weird question, but how do gargoyles greet each other. Like from different clans. Same or opposite sex greetings different? If then, how so? Like for Hudson, if he met a younger gargoyle (male or female) from another clan, how would they greet each other? Just very curious. I just can't find an answer to this question, I've looked nearly everywhere. Can you help me?
Did you look at the show itself? Or the comics? We've seen Hudson and other gargoyles meet and greet gargoyles from other clans multiple times.
This was something I pondered earlier. Who do you picture as the voice of Gnash/Nashville?
I've stopped revealing that sort of thing. It occurred to me that if I ever got the chance to do the series again - and I hope I do - and I wasn't (for whatever reason) able to get the voice actor I listed here at Ask Greg to play one part or another, I'm setting up the actor who does play the role as a second choice of some kind, which wouldn't necessarily be true.
