Gargoyles: Myths & Legends

(Written by Genocidal Smasher with additional research by Ecco1980)

Gargoyles: An Introduction

The cartoon series "Gargoyles" was a highly original and complex cartoon show that managed to incorporate and successfully combine many folklore, legends, mythological and biblical stories along with the works of Shakespeare,

and the legends of King Arthur into a massive universe connecting them all together. It broke the mold of the traditional Disney animated series with its dramatic plot and a diverse cast.

Gargoyles and Chimeras: A Brief History

Gargoyles are believed to have been inspired from a number of different sources, including mythology, religion, history, and legends. The most common belief is that the mythological creature called the Chimera inspired them. The Chimera was a fire-breathing monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent. The hero Bellerophon was sent to destroy the monster that terrorized his city. Along with him was his winged horse, Pegasus, and together they defeated the Chimera, thus freeing the city. As a result, stone statues were made resembling the Chimera as a remembrance of the horrid creature that Bellerophon destroyed and of his bravery in doing so.

Other beliefs suggest that gargoyles were inspired from religious perceptions and the Bible. The creatures were meant

to represent sin. Wrongdoing, or even the devil himself. Some believe that gargoyles were even partially inspired from skeletal remains of prehistoric dinosaurs. Others say that historic beasts and even star constellations inspired them. Whatever the case may be, the bottom line is that gargoyles have more depth to them then meets the eye.

According to myths and legends, real gargoyle creatures were very majestic and mysterious animals. They were stone statues during the day, and magically turned into flesh and blood creatures during the night. The stone slumber was a way for them to rejuvenate themselves and even heal wounds accumulated from the previous night. In honor of these noble creatures, humans began carving stone statues based on them and thus became modern day gargoyles.

And that's all I will say, for now!

RAC - The movie appears to be based on the speculation of some historians that Arthur was based on a Romano-British military leader in the 5th and 6th centuries who was fighting the Saxons (though other historians believe that Arthur was a purely mythical figure whose connection with the Saxon invasions was a case of "euhemerism"). This portrayal of Arthur has gradually grown more popular in modern-day fiction about him, to the point where it's begun to eclipse the traditional "knights of the Round Table" interpretation of him. (The latter still showed up in the "Gargoyles" interpretation of him, though, where his armor style was definitely medieval; in the real "Arthurian Age", warriors would have dressed, not like the knights in "Avalon Part Three", but more like Macbeth and Duncan's soldiers in the "City of Stone" flashbacks.)

Ah, there's always something fun to read in here...:)

Not to change the current discussion but when I saw paycheck's previews, there was a King Arthur movie that's coming out this summer, supposedly the true story behind the legend. Here's a couple summaries for the plot...

"Clive Owen has been talking about the upcoming King Arthur. "It's a new take
on the whole King Arthur story, unlike anything you've ever seen before," he
said in a recent interview. "What I didn't realize is that King Arthur is
actually a myth which developed over hundreds of years and has been slowly
pieced together. There's this sort of romantic vision of Arthur. Our version
is set earlier than it's usually set. We have it at 500 A.D. as opposed to
medieval times. Basically, the Roman Empire is crumbling." He went on: "I
play Arthur, who is half-Roman. He's a commander of a crack team of military
knights who, at the beginning of the movie, gets the mission from hell. To
go into dangerous, unknown territory and rescue a family as the Saxons are
invading by the thousands, and the rebels are out there fighting. Meanwhile,
Arthur has always held onto Rome as something he wants to return to and
something he reveres, but it keeps changing.""

"Based on a more realistic portrayal of "Arthur" than has ever been presented onscreen. The film will focus on the history and politics of the period during which Arthur ruled -- when the Roman empire collapsed and skirmishes over power broke out in outlying countries -- as opposed to the mystical elements of the tale on which past Arthur films have focused."

"Although the legend of King Arthur has not been historically established as fact, this film will attempt to place King Arthur within his possible historic context, smack between the fall of the Roman Empire (just a few hundred years after Gladiator) and the long road through the Dark Ages (roughly set in the 5th or 6th centuries). The magic and fantasy of the legend will be absent (Merlin may still be around; just not performing the magic seen in Excalibur)."

Sources from us.imdb.com and thezreview

I'm no arthurian scholar so I don't know if any of this is based on facts or just another, different perspective of Arthur.

I rather suspect that the "Illuminati were behind the revolutions" notion must have been encouraged by what was left of the deposed nobility (the ones who managed to escape into exile), on the grounds that it would have been a comforting thought to them. They could use it to say to themselves and to others, "See, the revolution didn't come about because of how we were treating the peasants, the revolution came about because those nasty Illuminati were giving them ideas. If we just get rid of those conspirators, then the peasants will go back to pulling their forelocks to us and saying, when we tell them to jump, 'How high?'."

I rather suspect that the Illuminati in the Gargoyles Universe had some connection to the American Revolution, in light of their symbol being a one-eyed pyramid. I have an oddball little theory about that regarding the Gargoyles Universe Illuminati, at that.

In actual history, the one-eyed pyramid wasn't the original choice for the Great Seal of the United States. After the Continental Congress decided to break with Great Britain and go for being independent, it commissioned John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson to come up with ideas for what should be on the official seal for the United States. They had several different ideas; one of them was Thomas Jefferson's, to have a depiction of Hengist and Horsa, the Saxon chieftains who began the Anglo-Saxon conquest of Britain in the 5th century. It was believed back then that the Saxons were the ones who had first come up with the whole concept of representative government and the people having inalienable rights that the ruler had to respect, so it seemed appropriate to Mr. Jefferson.

Now, we know that Mr. Duval is really Sir Percival, a former knight of King Arthur's Round Table, and the Saxons were among Arthur's leading enemies. (Not Hengist and Horsa themselves; both of them were slain before Arthur was even born. But they were still the ones who began the Saxon wars and Arthur no doubt had to fight their descendants during his reign.) Percival probably came to Camelot after Arthur's wars with the Saxons were concluded, but still, as one of Arthur's knights, he would have looked upon Hengist and Horsa as adversaries. Obviously he wouldn't have wanted them for the United States' new emblem, so it's tempting to wonder if he somehow got the Second Continental Congress to reject the notion, even suggesting the one-eyed pyramid through his agents precisely in order to provide an alternative.

Illuminati>>
I think in the Gargoyles series, they're mysterious for a reason. It keeps the viewer guessing as to whether they're good or evil, or somewhere in-between.

For instance, if they are behind wars, who says it's strictly for badness? Yea, death is bad, but would we know what peace is like without knowing war?

Hey all.

The Iluminati> A scapegoat would fit with their whole way of doing this. In the "Gargoyles universe" the Iluminati have corrupted many levels of government, and are trying create some type of New Wrold Order. I don't know if they could have caused or started the revolutions (In the Garg Universe or even ours) or not; that seems to me to be something that would need a huge catalyst.

The Russian Revolution (and the French, in much of the same way) was caused by years of oppression by the Czar; people were starving and even being shot (Bloody Sunday) or executed.

Could one organization really have that much pull?

GARGS> I received a book on Disney as a present yesterday, and it had a small blurb on Gargoyles, stating "It was a show Walt would have been proud of."

Also> I mistakingly forgot to add "USA" to the frop list on the voting form. Sorry, I didn't mean to exclude it. It's there now. And you can still vote... it'll be there for a while...

Happy New Year everybody!
It was certainly a wild & windy one.

Stephen R. Sobotka Jr> Have found myself in a similar situation past few months, so unfortuanately, I am only too aware how frustrating it can be. My vision's getting better now though, hope yours is sorted soon too.

After cancelling gargoyles over the Christmas break, looks like it'll only get 1 showing at 12.20pm now on toon disney - according to the sky guide the 3.15pm showing has been replaced by Hercules. Any of my fellow Brits happen to know if they've shown Shadows of the Past since it was brought back? It's the only world tour ep i've not managed to catch this time round.

All the best folks!

Perhaps Weishaupt was a pawn like Col. Oliver North. Someone was about to spill the beans on the society, and so the "Real Illuminati" (as Todd put it) made up the front of the "Bavarian Iluminati" and used Weishaupt as their scape goat, all the while hiding what was really going on.

The truth is out there.

So anybody got any ideas as to where Adam Weishaupt fits into the Gargoyle Universe's Illuminati? Was he an actual member of the Illuminati, or simply a cheap imitator? What did the "real Illuminati" think of his organization? (Since the "real Illuminati" of "Gargoyles" got started around 642, according to Greg Weisman, they obviously aren't the same as the Bavarian Illuminati.)

The Iluminati

Who They Are:

This group was founded in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a Jesuit Priest, in Bavaria. His Mission: to advance the 18th-century ideals of revolution, social reform, rational thought (the name means "the Enlightened Ones" in Latin) and his cronies were fiercely opposed by the monarchs of Europe and by the Catholic Church , which is why they had to meet and communicate in secret. German author Johan Goethe was a member. In the United States, both Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were accused of being membersand denied it, but both wrote favorably about Weishaupt and his efforts.

What They Are Blamed For:

This groups has been associated with more conspiracy theories than any other. Considered the silent evil behind such paranoid bugaboos as One World Government and the New World Order, the Illuminati have been blamed for starting the French and Russian revolutions, as well as both world wars, and almost every global conflict in between. Ther aer said to use bribery, blackmail, and murder to infiltrate every level of power in society-business, banking, and government-to achieve their ultimate goal: world domination.

ENJOY!!!

DPH> The next few questions aren't necessarily bad ones. Zarok's question about Seth (the Egyptian god) might not be entirely relevant to anything, but it's an honest question; Siren's making a noble attempt to have Greg reveal what Titania whispers to Fox; Souldier's asking about animation continuity errors which is a... tricky question; Zarok's back with Space Spawn religion, again not necessarily relevant but fair; and then the line of fair to moderate questions ends with one asking Greg where to find pictures from the show.

But I suppose if you're looking for a *good* question, standards for which are, of course, subjective, Aaron has a good one coming up, but other than that I haven't seen any that really stood out at me.

Basically if you want to know when it's worthwhile to visit AG, scroll to the bottom of the "Questions being submitted" page, find a question you like and come back whenever you think he's answered it (guestimate 10 answers/week, no answers on the weekends).

I'm always looking for a question that will elicit Greg's wit, but mostly there are just questions that will get basic "Check the FAQ" answers… I'm sure there's a support group somewhere for people in my situation, but I'm either too busy or too lazy to look).
