DEMONSKRYE - I doubt that Greg will be giving too many hints about the episodes that he would have done for Season Three if he'd stayed on; I'd like it if he did, but as long as he has hopes of the series returning, I suspect that he'll be pretty close about it.

I doubt that the New Olympians are sterile, simply because of how long they've been around (over 2000 years); they'd have died out by now if they weren't able to have offspring. As for Terry and Sphinx, that would be an interesting possibility, although the obstacle that it would face is that killing them off would be difficult in a television series, where they're the main characters. (Unless just one of them were to die, and the other to live.) Shakespeare could do it, since "Romeo and Juliet" was a "one-shot" story, but "The New Olympians" spin-off would have been a television series, which would mean a different set of rules. (Of course, the best-known adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet", "West Side Story", did end with the Romeo-equivalent dying, but not the Juliet-equivalent.)

Darn it! I knew I forgot something in my post! I meant to comment on Greg's "New Olympians" ramble. Also:

Todd> Speaking only for myself, I wasn't suggesting that Greg would do the same sort of rambles for TGC minus "The Journey" that he's done and will do for all the canon eps. I was thinking more of examinations of how these episodes turned out, what didn't work, what did - if anything, and maybe even hints at similar eps Greg intended to do (Trial of Goliath, for example).

New Olympians> I've been wondering about some things things concerning the spin-off series. I skimmed the New Olympians achives in Ask Greg and I get the impression that New Olympians can have children on their own (rather than being sterile offspring of human/fay couples). That was one question I had. The other I don't think has been answered, but feel free to prove me wrong. Greg frequently classifies the Terry/Sphinx relationship as a "Romeo and Juliet" one. I'm curious; how far do you think Greg intends to take that? A lot of stories in various media take inspiration from "Romeo and Juliet", but stop short of the ending. ("The Lion King 2" is the first thing that comes to my mind.) But Greg may want to lay it a little closer to the source material. In short, is there any possibility than Terry and/or Sphinx might actually die? (One or the other would still be a fair nod to the original. See "West Side Story".) I'm not certain how deep the prejudices run in their respective parents, so it's hard to say whether it would take something that drastic to make them see the error of their ways.

I don't think I could even ask this in Ask Greg. But it's still interesting to think about.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been comatose around here because of school. >.< I have three research projects due in less than 3 weeks...and no matter how long I work on them, I'm still not done with even one! And one of them is a presentation that will be taped *dies*
I've thought about this place and the DVD quite often recently and finally had a soare moment to poke my head back around here and see what was up. Guess I'm not the only one that has been really busy and not come here in a little bit! Hope everyone is doing well.

Demona Taina: Cheers for that. I'll wait until 7 December to order it, and I've left a review (been meaning to get around to it for a while). :)

Hey, has Greg added a review? I'd be interested to read his assessment. ;)

I don't think that Greg's going to be doing any rambles on any of the Goliath Chronicles (apart from "The Journey"). Remember, he didn't work on them; you'd need to get somebody like Eric Lewald to provide them instead.

Uggh! Hearing Greg's "Eye of the Storm" ramble is up got me thinking about writing my entry for next year's Eye of Odin Anthology. So I went to the bookstore and read a book about Norse mytholgy. Turns out everything I thought I knew about it was wrong. Now I'm going to have rework all my character relationships I had plotted out in my head. Yeah.

Battle Beast: The DVD has been up for pre-orders on Amazon since late August. But thanks anyway. :P

Ed: Everyone in the Gargoyles fandom has been advised not to pre-order the DVD until the release date, December 7th, 2004. Why? Because Buena Vista has already stated that it's vital that the series sells well on the release date. That's why we're not pre-ordering until then. Why pre-order? Because we're trying to get the series on Amazon's best seller list on the release date, which should boost sales. We're also trying to get as many reviews as possible, because potential buyers will see the DVD on the best seller list, look at all those positive reviews, and either remember the show fondly or decide to give the series a try if they've never seen it before. And besides, Buena Vista itself said that the more reviews the better. So be sure to leave a review if you haven't already; it only takes a minute to register and you don't need a credit card. And, if you can, pre-order the DVD on Amazon on the release date and/or buy it from a local store. Whichever works best for you. But it's very important that everyone buys it on that day.

If you haven't left a review, please do so by clicking on my name and going to "write an online review." And contrary to popular belief, you don't need a credit card and it doesn't matter if you're going to buy the DVD from Best Buy or some other online store because you can review without actually buying it. We're trying to make it to 150 reviews before December 7th, 2004! And if we can go beyond 150 reviews, even better!

And damn, that was a long post. Phew! I hope that helped, Ed!

That's all I will say. :P

What's the deal on pre-ordering though? Will that contribute to the sales figures for 7 December, or will it be counted for the day/week it's ordered?

I'm just saying a few ads on ABC would do wonders for sales. A lot of people have forgotten about the series, and I know for a fact that once you remind people about the series, they will probably at the very least investigate it further. I was at Fry's Electronics and asked if they were going to carry the DVD, and the guy didn't know what I was talking about, but once he saw it on the computer, he got a bit excited that a show he remembered so fondly was going to be available. Apply that kind of response to a few ads on ABC (maybe when AFHV is playing), and Disney could increase their sales even more.

Guess I haven't been around much lately either. Chalk it up to various other things occupying my time, especially articles for Jim Hill Media. (There is definitely going to be a "Gargoyles: Season 1" related article, but there's something I need to wait for before that can happen. And I'll leave it at that.)

Anyway....

Mark of the Panther (Geez, I HAVE been gone a while)> I did want to say that I got a chuckle out of Greg thinking about someone coming in during the "Panther Queen" story in this ep and being confused, because that's exactly what happened to me. Came home a little late or something, turned on the TV, thought "Gargoyles" had been pre-empted. At least, I did until the end of the story. I think I caught the begining of this ep in a rerun, but having read so many episode synopses, I'm no longer sure.

Eye of the Storm> Greg's ramble here was very enjoyable, though they pretty much all are. I remember being excited by the subtle reference to Elisa's feelings for Goliath. A few other thoughts:

I don't recall giving much thought to what Gunther was playing, but I think it might be cool if he were playing something like basketball, just to go against the obvious expectation.

Since the Eye of Odin turned out to be just that, I wonder how it got to look that way? It could actually be some sort of reliquary, but I prefer to think that when a child of Oberon loses a body part in a fight or transaction, it takes on an artifact-like appearence (see "Eye of Horus"). This would make it much more pleasant to transport and keep unknowing mortals from mistaking it for garbage, or worse, lunch.

Since, as Greg pointed out, nothing really happens when Odin recovers his eye, I wonder if it actualy gives him any more power or he just got sick of Puck calling him Patchy or somthing.

Mekai> I assume you mean that Greg might comment on some TGC episodes, since his personal policy would prevent him from looking at The Gargoyles Saga.

I'm sure Greg can find something to do in place of rambles. Even if it's not directly "Gargoyles" related, it's fun to hear his opinions. And I agree that discussions of TGC eps and possibly even similar stories that Greg had planned would be very cool.

Greg B.> Good points. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing some TV ads for Season 1. But you're right; very few DVDs of TV shows get television ads and many of the still manage to sell like hotcakes. I think the last few days prior to the release will be especially crucial for us in the fandom. Of course we haven't forgotten the date, but more casual fans around the internet may well forget. So we should really pile on the reminders right before Dec. 7. I wouldn't start too early, or you run the risk of becoming background noise. But once G-Day starts getting really close, start revisiting places where people showed intrest in picking up copies and remind them that the time is nigh.

Gantros> To be fair, most DVD sets you'll find in the Television section of Suncoast, FYE or any other stores like that don't really get television ads.

I never saw a commercial for the first volume of Batman TAS DVDs, no television commercials for any of the Transformers or Beast Wars DVDs. Hell, Babylon 5 got no TV commercials, and I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer had almost no commercials. Sometimes you do see them, but most of the time if these companies are going to pay good money to advertise a DVD on television, they'll do it for releases of major movies, or current major hits.

And, I have to point out, that for as long as I've been here, "Gargoyles" fans have long had a persecution complex, which was understandable at the time, I mean what they did with TGC was horrific, but it's been ten years... well, almost ten years. We worked for and earned this DVD release, but I highly doubt anyone over at Disney is thinking about "screwing us over". Disney is a company. It's about making money. A lot of money. You don't make money by screwing consummers over. ANd what do we have? All of season one (when everyone thought it would just be "Awakening") with some nice extras... I mean, sending a camera crew to Montreal to film the fans. Audio commentaries. And all for a low price. About $21 at Amazon, that's an extremely good deal.

Disney's not out to screw us, they want our money, and they're taking a chance on something they're not sure will succeed. They made the thing, the ball's in our court now. Let's show them it will, cause if it doesn't, it's going to be our fault at this point.

Disney seems to be either screwing over Gargoyles again or they plan to wait until the last minute until they start advertising their DVD set. I haven't seen a single TV ad and we are quickly approaching the 2 week mark.

Patrick>> Yup, skiing, sledding, and the like are big winter sports, but would it make sense to tell a kid "You played a good game of cross-country skiing"? ;-) (Although I think that is the national sport of Norway)

Winter sports: Besides hockey, there is ice skating, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, bobsledding, tobaganning, and ice fishing, just to name a few. And if they have indoor gymnasiums in Norway (and they probably do), that kid could have been playing just about anything else from basketball to volleyball.

No one has to ofcourse, but if anyone has any extra time on their hands....

JJ-hard to say if that kid was playing hokey or not, but it makes sense to me that he would have been.

Only 16 more episodes?!?!.......But its soo fun learning the thoughts that went behind each ep :( Oh well, maybe he'll think of somthing just as fun to ramble about, like some eps he would have done if he had continued with the series, his thoughts on some TGS eps, etc.

Well, I'll talk to all ya'll in a week or so...........dang it, no sattelite on the stupid boat, a week without Gargs, it just aint worth it........laterz!

Thanks for telling me about the new ramble, Matt. I've read it and submitted my own response to it.

And, yes, once "The Journey" comes (which is only 16 episodes away now), then that'll be the end of the rambles. But maybe Greg will find other things to present to us after that, that we can look forward to in their place.

They have a better team this year.

I was really hoping my eskies would my the cup again, but it wasn't to be. Then I was hoping for Saskatchewan to make it, but... oh well.

So in conclusion, the Argo's will win the 92nd Grey Cup.

SS - <How many questions are left now that it's in 2003?> Last time I had counted, there were a total of 368 questions submitted in the 2003, of course, I could have made a mistake. Subtract the one answered today and that leaves 367 questions left from 2003. There are 19 questions from January 1, 2003 to February 3, 2003. Then it skips forward to June 30, 2003. Right now, the total number of questions is 638. 277 of them are from 2004. 638-276=362 or 362 questions from 2004, unless I'm doing my math wrong. Almost immediately after those questions from January to February 2003, the 2003 gathering journals got in. :-) To be exact, right now, there are **28** questions until the 1st Gathering 2003 journal.

Anyway, got a question for all the Canadian football fans (and any Americans who watch the CFL (I know this isn't Gargoyles related, but I couldn't really think of anything, so I decided to bring up sports)).
Who do you think is gonna win the Grey Cup? Toronto or BC? I got my bets running on my hometown of T.O. Anyone there rootin' for BC?
And just on another sports related note, this winter is REALLY gonna suck without hockey (not saying it already hasn't).
Well, that's all I have to say. Anyone got anything else?

My computer had some serious misfortunes this morning, so I'm posting from the one at the public library. My Internet access is going to be very iffy for a while, since it seems that I may need to replace my old computer (what happened to it today could have been merely the final straw that broke the camel's back). I apologize to everyone here in advance if I'm not too available for the next few days.

MY TAKE ON T. H. WHITE'S ARTHUR: While this may be overusing a certain line in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night", I see White's Arthur as a man who was not born great but had greatness thrust upon him. White himself admits in "The Book of Merlyn" that Arthur was probably not the best choice for the work that Merlin had given him, and would have been better suited to organizing cricket matches and Sunday school treats in a little English country village than running a kingdom. He certainly is too ready (probably out of guilt) to excuse the actions of the Orkney clan (primarily Gawain, Agravain, and Mordred), which helps to precipitate the disaster, though he has sympathetic reasons to do so (namely, his troubled feelings about Uther's past crimes towards their family). He overlooks, in particular, the fact that just because they've had crimes committed against them in the past doesn't give them the right to plunge (or help to plunge) the kingdom into civil war and chaos (Agravain and Mordred show not even one ounce of consideration towards the fates of the people of Britain in their private quarrel with Arthur). But White's Arthur displays some strong positive features, at the same time. He is a good pupil who listens attentively to Merlin and does his best to put Merlin's lessons into practice. And although he makes a number of errors of judgement in his efforts (such as deciding to solve the Might problem by channelling it into rooting out dragons and giants rather than into simply putting an end to it altogether), whenever he discovers that one way of solving the problem didn't work, he sets to work in looking for another; he is strongly tempted to give up more than once, but in the end, he doesn't. His perseverence is one of his most admirable qualities. Even at the very end, the night before the final battle with Mordred, he sets himself to work in continuing to find a solution for the problem of war, and even sees to it that future generations have some possibility of succeeding where he failed when he tells young Tom (the future Sir Thomas Malory) about his aspirations so that Tom can write them down for other people to read and learn from.

And despite the fact that Arthur comes from the family of those who committed the Wrongs (Uther's family), he shows himself to be better suited for leadership than those who were at the receiving end of the Wrongs (Morgause and her sons). The Orkneys care only about revenge and don't give any consideration to the innocent bystanders caught up in their pursuit of it (almost like Castaway's methods against the gargoyles in the Goliath Chronicles); Arthur realizes (with Merlin's help at the beginning) that all of these efforts to avenge past injuries are only making things worse. (One of the strongest cases of this comes when he persuades Sir Aglovale to make peace with the Orkneys instead of seeking to avenge the deaths of his father and brother upon them.) Arthur doesn't have the greatest of heads (which is the main reason for his downfall in White), but he has a great heart.

matt, do you have images of what your customs look like esp. Griff and Boudicca, if you're willing to part with them, I'll gladly take those 2 off your hands.

bootlegs> damn, those are some ugly figures... whats with macbeths skin tone?
i had all those figures (actually, i still do) and i made several custom figures that are WAY better than those. i'm not bragging, i'm just saying its not hard to make something presentable.
for anyone who is interested, the custom figures i made were:
Griff
Zafiro
Angela
a Guatemalan Garg loosely based on Obsidiana
an Ishimuran Garg based on several Gargs in "Bushido"
Boidekka
Coldstone
one of my faves was a female gargoyle that started with Lex, i added breasts, an Ophelia-like crest, and coloring similiar to Brooklyn.
Thailog was the easiest custom ever, esspecially considering the over-abundance of Goliath figures that were made. actually, Goliath parts went into 5 of the above mentioned figures, lol.

anyway, enough rambling. anyone else do customs?

As much as I hate selling off any cels from my collection, I need to in order to raise money for school, bills and the Gathering.

So here is a chance to buy a Goliath cel from my large collection of Gargoyles cels:

lol @ that bootleg site

Am I the only one that thought the Macbeth toy looked like a crossbreeding of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (X-Men series) and Mr. Hyde from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? ;) As for Goliath...he looks like he's constipated. :P

I also took the liberty of e-mailing the dude a link to what the actual toys look like. :)

Todd>> Oops. :blushes: I meant to use the word that Greg uses.

Thank you for your analysis of White's Arthur, and the civil war in The Once...
Tell me this, though. What was your opinion of Arthur as according to White?

Matt>> I think I'll be brief for now. (for me ;-) ) I only got an impression about Brooklyn's change of role, nothing that I would say was conclusive, esp. since Greg thinks otherwise.

Also, I think that leading people is a different task than coming up with clever solutions. White's Merlin and Arthur is an example: Merlin came up with the ideas, but Arthur led the people. Britain needed both.

Note: I'm not suggesting Brooklyn is much like Merlin. I am just giving an example for an "idea man."

Well, IMO Brooklyn just wasn't ready to be a leader. He's still for all intents, a "teenager" by comparison. He got the job, but he wasn't really expecting to be taking command anytime soon. When Goliath, Elisa, and Bronx disappeared in "Avalon", Hudson had to goad him into getting things done in "Kingdom" and hasn't really asserted himself until they first went on patrol with Angela in "Turf". Even then, it was only to get some one on one time with Angela. Perhaps in time when he get a little older and matures some more he'll be really ready for command.

Thats just my take on it. :)

I wouldn't call Greg's piece on "Pendragon" a rant; the word "rant" implies anger, which I saw none of in his article. The word that he himself used for it was "ramble".

Arthur's seeming weakness towards both Mordred and the Lancelot-Guinevere affair, in White, actually stems (in part) from his nobility. His father, Uther Pendragon, was a cruel and brutal tyrant who had married Arthur's mother by first disposing of her husband, and Arthur did not want to follow in Uther's footsteps, so he deliberately exercised restraint towards Mordred (especially since Mordred was the grandson of the Earl of Cornwall, Uther's victim, and in Arthur's eyes had a legitimate grievance against him thereby) and towards his wife and Lancelot, with an attitude of "I can't just go around cutting people's heads off because of personal problems with them; I have to be under the law."

In White's version, Arthur's real mistake, ironically enough, is setting up the knights of the Round Table, as a means of channelling the energy of the warriors in his kingdom towards dealing with giants and dragons and robber-barons, as a means of solving their constantly fighting each other (which they were doing before he came to the throne). The trouble was that once the knights had run out of giants and dragons and robber-barons to slay, they began fighting each other again, simply because they had nobody else to fight, and both Mordred's schemings and Lancelot and Guinevere's adultery were just the catalyst for the civil war that erupted; without these events, the knights would have found some other excuse to fight each other and thereby destroy Camelot.

Cúchulluin>> A rather serious illness in my family had interrupted me for the past bit. Now that it's mostly over, I will try to research Cúchulluin's association with Irish gods, as I alluded to before.

Greg's Pendragon rant>>
* "Familiar wind" -- Hudson does seem to have some experience with magic... (Presumabily not as a magician)

* When did Brooklyn "take charge"? As I recall, the gargoyles, as a group, all decided that this was a worthwhile fight. They helped on their own volition and in their own unique ways. In fact, I would argue that the only leader in this Pendragon/Manhattan clan party was Arthur.
This ep, with Gathering Part I, suggested to me the Brooklyn gradually had to resign command, as if it turned out to be beyond him. But that is a rant for another time.

Maybe my memory is bad. It gets foggy at times.

* Electrocution and Defeating the Water Djinn-- Usually the lightning gun acts like a glorified taser with extreme range. Perhaps Arthur was able to withstand the blow, and the Lady in the Lake was satisfied that Arthur's solution made sense on some level.

*Arthur's Intelligence and White >> In The Once and Future King, wasn't Arthur a dolt whose only graces were a good heart and the willingness to trust Merlin and his friends? Without Merlin, didn't he show himself to be inadequate to handling Mordred and the Gueneviere(sp)/Lancelot fiasco? In any event, his smarts seemed to be parroted bits of Merlin's teachings. This probably just my time-worn, inaccurate memories, though.

One of my recent questions in my mind about Pendragon goes back to a statement Hudson made. Hudson says "This is no ordinary storm. I recognize this storm, something is coming" or something to that effect before King Arthur and Griff arrive.

Greg just posted the ramble for "Pendragon". Among other things, it contains a parallel between Macbeth and King Pellinor (one which I hadn't imagined before, but find very entertaining).

I've made another part of the story, and I've kind of changed the part I posted earlier to kind of add to the suspense a bit, leaving the reader open to the possibility of Brooklyn's guilt (we know it isn't, but you know how L&O is). Here's my attempt at involving Elisa Maza to talk to Brooklyn in the interrogation room immediately after sunset:

Department Interrogation Area
Sunset

"I've never seen a gargoyle wake up before, something to tell my kids when I get home," said Stabler, watching Elisa Maza stand anxiously outside the observation window watching the last rays of sunlight filter through the barred windows of the room over the solitary stone figure. Benson held her breath as the first cracks started to spread over the gargoyle's chest and work their way over the entire body, ending at the eyes, which glowed with white fire. The creature began to move, shedding stone skin everywhere as the mirrored glass they were behind shook with his roar and the remaining fragments exploded in all directions. Benson exhaled, looked around and noticed that the hallway was filled with officers jockeying for a look into the room. "Alright, show's over, back to work," With a few dejected sighs and impressed whistles, the crowd dispersed. Maza quickly let herself into the room before the gargoyles could try anything.

The scarlet beaked figure looked over to the door and looked immediately relieved. "Elisa!" he said, "Where am I? It was dawn and I tried to hide in a dark alley for the day…" But Elisa waved him silent. "It's ok, Brooklyn, you picked a bad place to sleep, you were found near the body of a girl who was raped and strangled, the tests show that whatever did this to her wasn't human, to make matters worse, a media van showed as SVU was moving you, and labeled you as the killer. There are threats of Quarryman revivals and even religious fanatics demanding your destruction on grounds that you are a dangerous animal,". Brooklyn looked down at the floor. "I here I thought being under the Endangered Species Act was a good thing,"…

Oddly enough, I do my best work when I'm fighting sleep, so I've made a kind of "test run" on my L&O:SVU/Gargoyles Crossover. This is a brief conversation at the SVU Department on the afternoon after they haul Brooklyn in for his own protection (he had been in stone when they found him at the scene). Any comments on how to improve writing style, character interactions would be greatly appreciated, if you have anything really in-depth or would like to assist in the writing of this story, please e-mail me directly:

Dept of SVU

"Gargoyles have been public knowledge for nearly 8 years and people still think they are out to get their kids, after all they've done for this city?" says Fin.
"Lot of good Christians out there, gargs can't help if they look like the definition of evil from the Bible, turning to stone in the day doesn't help to dispel that belief either," replies Stabler, just as Benson comes in with a folder, tossing it on the desk.
"Autopsy just came in on the victim, raped and crushed windpipe, DNA testing confirms that it is a human who raped her, so our walking sculpture is cleared…".
"Great, now we just have to convince the 4 million people that an innocent gargoyle happened to take his nap at the scene of a brutal rape and murder," quipped Munch as Captain Cragen comes in.
"We've got the famous Detective Maza who wants to speak with our guest when he wakes up in about an hour. Benson, Stabler, go with her and see if the gargoyle witnessed anything…"
