Keith David sighting! This probably won't be a surprise to anyone: I just saw BIRD, Clint Eastwood's biography picture about jazz legend Charlie Parker. Keith played one of his bandmates.

Considering that Keith was a regular voice on Ken Burns' JAZZ mini-series, this also made sense.

Well, yet another Christmas has come and gone.

I hope everyone had a good one.

I kind of freaked out when I just had a commercial for Pee-Wee's Playhouse, OMG, I'm how old, anyway, it's weird that they're bringing stuff back from when we were kids, MLP,Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake and now Paul Reuben's take on a kids show.

Er... Sorry for a late Christmas message of Happy Holidays To All! Here's a link I put up every year for those wanting a bit of garg chat humor over the holidays. It is a bit old and the text displays what the chatroom in mini used to be like but it's still fun. Enjoy! *bows out*

I got Gargoyles for Christmas!!! I was/am so happy, especially since I've been reading everyone else rave about the DVD during the past 2-3 weeks. I started screaming with joy when I opened the box and found Gargoyles inside. I think I was even more excited than my little sisters were about any of their presents. (They're usually the ones shrieking for joy). All of I got to say is that it looks awesome. I watched all five parts of Awakening yesterday morning and Trill of the Hunt this morning and it looked and sounded awesome. The funniest part is that my eight year old sister kept going "that wasn't in the movie" when we were watching Awakening, since we have the Gargoyles: The Heroes Awaken movie and she's seen it a million times.
Anyway, I just had to share my joy! Now, we just need season 2!

Watched "Reawakening" tonight after all the family went home. I guess it's kinda fitting for Xmas with its themes of family and community. I forgot that this one was about Coldstone. I was never even aware what the season-ender was about when I watched during the original airings, or that there even was a season finale. Maybe Season 2 aired with no break in between and that's why, can't remember. It's so obvious that it's not the last we've seen of Coldstone, they didn't even try to convince us he might possibly be dead. I'll be glad when I can see Season 2 again so I won't have to watch Demona play not-so-threatening villain-of-the-week anymore, she's much better in multi-parters.

Wanna watch the "Awakening" commentaries tonight but my sister stole the PS2 to play Harvest Moon.

****The wall of the Comment Room opens as though it were some immense gate. From its narrow opening rides forth a figure garbed in black, his helmet covering his entire face, without even a single eye-hole. All that is visible is a scarred and ugly mouth. The figure gives a ghastly grin, then whips off the helmet to reveal Blaise's smiling face.****

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, as well as various other holiday tidings!
Sorry for the sinister entrance, but I had to try out my "Mouth of Sauron" impression.

I'd better get back to my "Return of The King" Extended edition--it's quite fun! I will be back to shoot the breeze later on, though. Until then, farewell. ****Blaise wheels his horse around and gallops back through the "wall-gate," which promptly closes up behind him.****

Merry Christmas, everyone!

And, yes, Greg Weisman's episode rambles are one of the best parts of "Ask Greg". (Currently, he's gotten up to "The Green".) Some of the points that he brought up in them were ones that I hadn't even noticed at the time, but certainly enriched my understanding of the series.

(A favorite of mine was his ramble on "Awakening Part Five" where he comments on the scene where Goliath tells a vengeful Demona that the people responsible for the Wyvern Massacre have been dead for a thousand years. Greg pointed out that, although Goliath doesn't know it, that isn't the case, since Demona is still alive - and comments on the impact that those words of Goliath's must have had on her, since some part of her, deep down inside, underneath the hardened crust of "None of this was my fault" knows that she really is to blame for the event.)

Although it would be a bittersweet moment, since it would mark the end of the rambles, I'm looking forward to his ramble on "The Journey" when it comes. For one thing, I'd like to see Greg's analysis of the Quarrymen in this episode, the only episode involving them that he handled. I think that a major problem that the Quarrymen have is that all the episodes with them after "The Journey" were done by a new production team which didn't have the insight into the Gargoyles Universe that Greg had, which degenerated them into simply a pack of one-dimensional hammer-wielding thugs who didn't even have a rationale for their hatred of the gargoyles (since their strategies made it clear that they knew that the clan were protectors rather than vicious monsters). This has probably made it harder for us to really analyze them, since we've got that portrait of theirs in such episodes as "The Dying of the Light", "Generations", "For It May Come True" and "Angels in the Night" overriding the portrait in "The Journey". Greg's comments on the Quarrymen in his ramble on "The Journey" (when it finally shows up in "Ask Greg") might do a lot to make it clearer how he visualized them and counteract this disastrous influence.

Amazon's Gargoyles DVD listing is back to "Usually ships within 24 hours". Hopefully Greg is right, that the "in 9 to 10 days" thing temporarily being up meant that they had sold out of or gotten very low on their original stock. If so, that's really reassuring to know. I guess it's still way too early, but I wish we could get some official word about how well the overall sales are from Greg Weisman or someone at Buena Vista/Disney.

Faieq > Thanks for the timeline info. I guess I should finally try out that Ask Greg search feature. I read the Ask Greg FAQ over a year ago, but didn't realize until recently that those long threads of questions are all saved and archived as well and that there's a wealth of info in them. I should probably read Greg'd episode rambles as well since they're basically like more DVD supplements.

So far the count of people who have been snowed in has been zero... then I came along. My dad and I decided to spend the holidays with relatives who live up north.... biggest mistake to date! Woke up yesterday morning (and this morning) and there was just a little over two feet worth of snow! Luckily none of us had to do any Christmas shopping, because it was damn near impossible to go anywhere! Sure the snowplows were going around, but half the streets in the area hadn't even been touched! Okay, I think I'm done rambling now.

Snowed in? HA! I live in Florida! And it's been a roller coaster ride lately with weather. The past few days made me pull out my winter coat, muffs, and gloves. Then today I get totally bundled up and walk outside, and the heat hit me. It wasn't actually beach weather, but I would have been pretty comfortable in shorts if it wasn't for the breeze. I had to run back in and change. But the next few days are suppost to be cold again. 34 degrees and raining. Much colder and we might just have a little snow here. It has snowed in Jacksonville a few times in the past 10 years or so. And we are only a hour south of Jax, so just maybe....

And I have my seasonal sign hanging on my front gate, "Will Work For Snow" :D
Hey, I've been in Florida for over 10 years, been a long time since I went sledding and made a snowman...Next time I get to play in snow, perhaps I shall make a snow-gargoyle :D

We're not snowed in, but we're kind of iced in. had snow, then freezing rain, then rain, back to freezing rain and snow then-what they call a flash freeze where the temps drop very fast and everything turns solid in a mass of ice. Traveling tomorrow won't be fun. Today it wasn't fun either, it was like sliding on ice one minute, and then driving through a foot & a half of water the next. Odin must be up to his old tricks....or maybe goliath has borrowed Odin's eye again for a while ^_^.

Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating-and even if you aren't, have a good time anyway. Just be safe.

Have a look for yourself. :) The first three pics were taken about half an hour to an hour apart. The last one was taken about 5pm. After that, it looked the same, and it would've been too dark for the digital camera anyways. (Thats the biggest drawback of digital cameras, they royally suck at nightshooting.)

That "Deer Avenger" bit reminds me of a comic strip that I saw years ago (I think that it was in "Mother Goose and Grimm") with a deer pointing a rifle at a hunter, and saying to him, "That's right, my name is Bambi, and maybe you forgot what happened to my mother - but I never forgot...."

Kris, here's a rough outline by Greg as to what the timeline for the first season was. http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=4534

As for season two, I assume that it would start in early spring 1995? I'm not sure, but I think Goliath, Elisa and Bronx travel to Avalon in late 1995 and are still on the World tour though the beginning of 1996. Alexander Xanatos' birthday is on the 09th July 1996 so that's the date of "The Gathering part one", and Hunter's moon was 26th October in 1996 so that's "Hunter's moon part 3". Then "The Journey" would have taken place a couple of days/weeks after Hunter's Moon 3, so I assume TGC started November 1996? I haven't a clue about actual individual dates for each episode, or when TGC ended.

Good news. I think the entire stock of "Gargoyles" DVDs has been bought out from Amazon.

I just checked their site, and for "Gargoyles" it said something like "Will Ship in 9 to 11 Days" Up until now it was within 24 hours like everything else. They must be presently out of stock and waiting for more to come in.

I should point out that my post before wasn't commenting on whether Demona the character is or isn't a feminist but rather whether or not Demona could be used as an example of feminist storytelling in 'Gargoyles'. I suspect that might be a pretty tough sell. At the very least, there are dozens of examples I'd have gone for sooner. As for Demona the character... as Todd says, I rather doubt gender issues factor high on her prioirities list.

Ed, Siren and anyone else talking about Demona as a feminist: My personal opinion is this-Demon would not be a feminist, why would she care. On the other hand, as Dominique she would have to be a feminist to survive in the modern world as a business woman. In fact, given the gargoyle world and my knowing jack squat about Greg W's master plan, Dominique might very well be considered a role model to the newest generation of Feminists.

Sorry for the double post, but anyways...

Kingdom Hearts and Gargoyles? Oh! That would be awesome! I look back at the old Genisis game, which I still have and look to all the new games we have now. Imagine if Disney would dig into their pockets and make an entirly new Gargoyles game. With all the technology out today, it could be great. I especially think of X-Men Legends, Spiderman 2, and the Buffy games out now. With X-Men, you can play up to 4 characters at once and have 4 players in at anytime. Imagine if you could have most the clan. You could pick and choose and have adventures there. Spiderman 2 has some great graphics and interactions. And the Buffy game you can play different characters depending on the level. My mind is racing with ideas I'd love to see and wish Disney would do it.
A nice role-playing game would be cool too. Like the LOTR:The Third Age.
And they would have to allow you to play Demona at least for one level :D
Random Thought: Remember Deer Avenger? When you were the deer shooting hunters. Demona could have her own, "Gargoyle Avenger". ;)

Trolls/Twits/Morons>Ignore them. Obviously Gargoyles is very alive and well if we have trolls here now. Every POPULAR messageboard has them. It just means we are popular enough for people who have NOTHING better to do in their lives then bother us. Pretend they are nothing more then bored children. If we ignore them, they'll go find another board to bother.

Demona as a Feminist?

As far as I can see, gargoyles do not hold the same prejudice as humans do. They don't have problems with gargoyles of different color, or wing shape, origins, or sex. Like humans, there seems to be some mild teasing. Like Lexington and Brooklyn teasing Broadway on his weight, but nothing to the effect of prejudice. And gargoyles are equal no matter the gender. Demona was second-in-command. To a human, that's like have a female vice-president.

Demona hates humans. She hates the Hunter the most, but as been proven in Hunter's Moon, the Hunter could be male or female. Demona hates them equally. I can imagine that she cared less about the women's movement. And the last thing she would have done was allied herself with them, unless it suited her purpose and needs, like she used Xanatos and Sevarius for.

I doubt that Demona would have that much interest in the feminist movement, since from her point of view, human males and human females are equal - equally corrupt and irredeemably anti-gargoyle, and equally requiring to be slaughtered down to the last one.

Greg B: I'd agree about Elisa (or even Fox, Maria Chavez, Angela, Titania, Katharine...), but I don't know Demona's really much of a gift to feminism. She's a shrieking, conniving, blinkered, scantily-clad, emotionally unstable to downright insane genocidal ex-wife/future-mother-in-law to two of our regular male characters, after all. Plus, you want to talk about an angel/whore complex: Angel to Demona? Call it a hunch, but I don't think her and feminism are entirely buddy-buddy. But you never know...

Just to debunk the whole "god" thing, you've got to remember when these myths came about. Back then, people weren't all that well educated so even a present-day person showing up in a harrier jet would be thought of as a god let alone someone with magical power. Just think of how much that would've boosted Xanatos' ego if he got his hands on the pheonix gate, and went back in time in his exo-frame battle armor (ie: the red goliath-shaped armor) and appeared infront of a bunch of cavemen.

Is anybody looking forward to Xmas??? The jews r pretty lucky (if u ignore their streak of bad luck, getting killed by Nazis 50 years ago and always being mistreated, although I like the jews much, much better than black people, because the jews don't whine about their hard time like girly ass sissies), because their holiday is like 8 or 9 days long, and ours is just 1...also, an intreaguing note is that the Vikings believed that on the coldest night of the year, Odin, assisted by his alfs (elves), would put a bunch of presents for ppl that had been good into a sack and ride around the world, giving ppl stuff, and he left it under a tree they put by their fireplace, which would have been an ash tree, traditionally, to represent the giant tree that holds up the universe (or so the Vikings thought to be the case). In other words, Santa Claus is a frickin' GOD. I think that explains how he gets around the entire world fast enough to give ppl stuff in one night :) (of course, im just kidding, there is no Santa Claus, but just an interesting tibit...also, Odin=Robin Hood, although how and why that works is an even longer and more complicated story)

This douche also posted in ASK GREG

****

He who is asking you a question writes...
Is there going to ever be another Gargoyles series? And I mean, one directed by you? You really should do another one that picks up at the end of the old series (no, not the Goliath Chronicles). And if I may say, you should have as much violence, darkness, paganism, abuse of religious freedom ("no depictions of a Cross allowed in a kids' cartoon" totally ignored) and violent death, and reference to it as possible. Those were some of the things (besides the character depth and the fact that they constantly developed, which was something few if any other cartoons posessed) that made the first series great. If you did do another (hopefully very violent and politically INcorrect and without any of that damned evil feminism) series, will you be making it start in the present year, or will it pick up at the end of 1996? Would you introduce new characters? Perhaps, some really classical ones like Dracula? Would there be more focus on King Arthur (I hope so, since alongside Conan the Barbarian (the books, not the movie, and only the books actually written by R.E.H. himself), ol' Artie is my favourite fictional character by far)? And also, what gave you the idea of making it so that all the gods in the Gargoyleverse (if you don't mind me calling it that) are merely the offspring of Oberon (a fact which I hate, because it cancel them really being gods)? Lastly, but not least, would you ever consider implementing actual guns instead of lasers (keep in mind that they were able to get that past the censors in the JLA cartoon)? Thanks for any answers.

****

Hmm, damned evil feminism eh? I guess Elisa should have just stayed home and cooked and cleaned for the gargoyles. Maybe Demona should have been a guy, instead of Goliath's former mate, his brother gone bad or some crap like that.

I was watching an old video clip of their opening theme (I'm a bit of a nostalgic, that's why I like Gargoyles), and I couldn't help but notice that the logo matches 2nd version Talon's facial profile (from the side, anyway), and the fact that Thundercats = Mutates electrical ability could have been a play on words. Man, you folks know what I hated about Gargoyles? Not only that they always had stupid faggity lasers instead of GUNS, but that the "gods" were really just a stupid extradimensional race (like in Marvel) who were the offspring of that dick Oberon, instead of really GODS. And I don't like that Oberon could paralyze Odin with a snap of his fingers; Odin is one of my favourite characters from Norse mythology. Odin should have been depicted as an actual god, and much more powerful than Oberon. There's my two cents.

Kris > We've started a "Thank You, Disney" letter campaign to the Buena Vista address (click to go to the front page of the G2005 website for specifics). The goal is to get them to release SEASON 2 to dvd. After that happens we can work towards a direct to video ANIMATED (not the long backburnered live) film.

Disney is aware there is a Gargoyles fanbase, it took them a while, but they've acknowledged us. And Greg has never stopped pitching Gargoyles back to the Disney bosses. But we'll never be a match for their main demographic (kids 6-12) so they'll never do anything just for us unless we can prove we'll move the product they do provide.

Greg just gave us all an early Christmas present: a ramble on "The Green" at "Ask Greg"! Check it out, everyone! It's great to have another episode ramble up.

(One interesting revelation in it: his daughter Erin thought that Hyena turning herself into a giant bowling ball was even more disturbing than Jackal wanting to give Goliath a "make-over".)

MATT - Your explanation certainly does make sense. It probably helped, also, that the White Council attacked Sauron during the latter part of the book, which might have distracted him from calling the Ring to himself. (One thing that I've got to say is that the later revelation about the Ring's true nature gives extra weight to Gandalf's warning to Bilbo and the dwarves not to go around Mirkwood to the south since it would bring them too close to the Necromancer's tower. That advice seems even better in light of "The Lord of the Rings".)

Again, of course, Tolkien didn't know what the Ring really was when he was writing "The Hobbit". (In fact, in the original version - which he later revised to fit in with "The Lord of the Rings" - Gollum actually agreed to give the Ring to Bilbo if he won the Riddle-game, not knowing that Bilbo had already found it. There's a particularly funny bit where, after Gollum discovers that the Ring is gone, he comes back and apologizes to Bilbo profusely over being unable to fulfill his promise, even offering Bilbo some fish as a consolation, which Bilbo immediately turns down with a shudder.)

The Hobbit> Todd, i was under the impression that the ring didn't have an "evil" influence on Bilbo in "The Hobbit" cuz Sauron was only starting to reawaken... and later Bilbo, and Frodo would feel its evil more as Sauron grew stronger...
thats not to say that there wasn't any evilness to the ring in "The Hobbit". i mean, you have Gollum for one thing, but more than that, when Bilbo acquires it, hes extremely secretive about it, and hides it compulsively... obviously it was beginning to take hold of Bilbo from the beginning...

or i might be wrong, i'm not a huge Tolkien scholar, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong about anything. i'd be interested in knowing the facts.

Y'know.. I never posted this here.. but I find it funny. As does everyone else I've told.

This summer, Birmingham, AL, was the host city for a Star Trek convention. They visited a few sites around town, even the giant statue of the Greek god of iron (I believe that to be right, correct me if I'm wrong...!). Birmingham was founded on the steel industry, as some of the suburbs show (Bessemer, Irondale, Graystone, etc).

The Trekkies were travelling to the Land of Vulcan.

And I wish I were making this up.... I seriously wish I was making this up....

For that matter, Greg Weisman once mentioned at "Ask Greg" that Disney at one point wanted to make a movie version of "The Hobbit", but were never able to acquire the rights. (Mind you, they might not have been the ideal candidate for that, since Tolkien had an extremely low opinion of Disney.)

I remember coming across a lively discussion in a Tolkien forum of what ought to be in the movie, a few months ago. It included such questions as which familiar figures could show up - for example, could Legolas have a cameo, since his father was the Elven-king who imprisoned the dwarves in Mirkwood - and even how to portray the Ring (while the sinister portrayal would be more consistent with "The Lord of the Rings", it would feel out of place in "The Hobbit", where the Ring is just a simple ring of invisibility - Tolkien hadn't realized, when he was writing "The Hobbit", that it was going to turn out to be something more than that, and only discovered what the Ring really was when he began writing the sequel).

(As a side-note, I can't help but think that, while there were more important reasons for this alteration of the Ring, of course, it also had one interesting side-advantage: it meant that Frodo couldn't casually use it as a way of getting out of danger - at least, not very often - in the same way that Bilbo could in "The Hobbit".)

Saw a strange rumor on the PS2 Forums on IGN. Rumor has it that should Kingdom Hearts 2 be a hit, and a 3rd installment is made, it may include Manhattan and the Gargoyles as one of its worlds. If this rumor pans out to be true, this would be great for the series in general.

Has Greg Weisman mentioned any specific Disney address we should write to in appreciation of the DVDs?

There's a Buena Vista Home Entertainment address on the DVDs, but since they're only the distributor, wouldn't that be less effective than getting the message to the Disney higher-ups? The folks who the sales most concern and who're in a position to greenlight a direct-to-DVD movie or series revival? Ideally I guess we should send letters to as many people involved in the project as possible.

THE Hobbit> I knew there was a big brew ha ha involved in the Hobbit. This was the reason, in part, that jackson made the trillogy in the first place. (That and when he went to New Line, they said if you want that much to make one movie, we'll give you this much to make all three.)

SIR IAN> Actually, last week, they posted an article on "imdb.com" that said that almost all of the principle cast of LOTR tryptich stated they would reprise roles/play other family members/have cameos in the Hobbit. As it was, they had Sir Ian, Elijah and JRD on board.

That is all I will say.

New Line Cinema has the rights to make THE HOBBIT. United Artists on the other hand has the distribution rights. Both know this will be a huge cash cow, and I bet it will take the lawyers a very long time to sort this out. But I hope they do soon, so Sir Ian McKellen isn't too old to reprise the role of Gandalf... I just can't see anyone else in the role.

HOBBIT> The Hobbit, from what I last heard, was mired in 1,000 kilometers of red tape. However, the owner of the rights said they would give them to Jackson because he did such a good job on the other three, and he would be the only one to do the book justice.

That is all I will say.

Wow, been a long time. I've been so busy with finals (and being sick) that I completely lost track of everything happening, and I'm actually a bit late on ordering the Gargoyles DVD - I wish I had remembered to include it with my other holiday order from Amazon. >.>

I am a bit surprised, reading the latest Ask Greg responses, that Greg had to order a copy of the DVD for himself. I thought for sure that he would have gotten a comp. copy for having worked on the show. (Of course, Disney -is- quite a different beast than the industry I've worked with for a time...)

Anyways, other than that, just dropping by to let people know I was still alive... not that anyone really knows who I am =p

Since, based on what I've read, they included the "Next Time on Gargoyles" and "Previously on Gargoyles" elements in "Awakening" on the DVD, I very much hope that that includes my personal favorite part of that segment, at the end of the first "Next Time on Gargoyles", where Elisa's telling Officer Morgan that she intends to find out what was going on up in the Eyrie Building, and as she speaks, the music starts building up, to lead into the "truncated introduction sequence". I always thought that that was a particularly great touch.

I don't know how many people here got to read the interview with Greg Weisman that was linked to in the comment room last week, but it was a good read (though maybe not containing much that was new to anybody who's read all the way through his answers at "Ask Greg"). One bit that stood out to me was when Greg mentioned that one of the reasons why he gave up reading "X-Men" was because it never seemed to get anywhere in resolving the humans vs. mutants issue; no matter how many times the X-Men would publicly save the world, in the next issue, nearly all the humans would be hating them again, and while it sometimes did provide a rationale for that (as in Magneto making another attack), often it didn't.

This makes me wish all the more that Greg had gotten to make the whole third season of "Gargoyles", since one of the flaws of the Goliath Chronicles was that it followed the same pattern: almost the entire city would be hating the gargoyles again in the next episode, no matter how much progress the gargoyles had made in the episode before it. (For example, "Broadway Goes to Hollywood" ends with the indication that they've made a big step forward with Broadway appearing on the talk show, and then when the next story, "A Bronx Tale", begins, we're back to anti-gargoyle hostility being widespread again. At least the E--n P-x incident provided some rationale for the gargoyles' progress being undone.) If the series had provided a more orderly progression, with more and more New Yorkers gradually starting to wonder if their initial assumptions about the gargoyles had been mistaken, rather than the "automatic reset button" being applied all the time, it would have been much better.

At least we got to see some of it in "The Journey", where it was made clear that Elisa wasn't the only "pro-gargoyle" human in New York. Matt's secretly helping out the gargs still, when he points out on the air that there's no proof that the gargoyles are a threat. Macbeth defends the gargoyles against Margot in the television debate. (I still like the fact that Macbeth's final appearance in the series had him acting as a friend to the clan rather than an enemy.) And we get to see Vinnie cross over to the "pro-gargoyle" camp and actually save Goliath and Elisa from Castaway. (It's also worth noticing that, despite the crowd of ordinary citizens who sign up for the Quarrymen at the end of Act I, Vinnie's the only one who takes part in the big confrontation, and he's the one who rejects Castaway. The rest of the Quarrymen in the pursuit and battle of Goliath were Castaway himself, and Banquo and Fleance, who were professional mercenaries rather than frightened civilians - and who are hunting the gargs because they're being paid to do it rather than out of fear of the different. There's also a brief crowd of Quarrymen at the clock tower, but they're merely extras, and we don't know whether they were more of the "ordinary citizen" recruits, or fellow mercenaries like Banquo and Fleance.) It all suggests that the situation isn't so hopeless after all, even if it'll take a lot of hard work to fix.
