matt>> Well, no, they're not *rare*, but you don't exactly see them in every cash register across the country. Look at the 2004 U.S. Mint coin production figures:

Pennies - 6,836 million
Nickels - 1,445 million
Dimes - 2,487.5 million
Quarters - 2,401.6 million
Half-Dollars - 5.8 million
Sacagawea Gold Dollars - 5.3 million

So yeah, I'm sure plenty of people have them, but I'd wager most aren't using them as circulated currency.

That's the first I've heard of them returning. They're not listed in the episode's credits, so unless it's a pretty well-kept secret, I think you're picking up on random rumors. Oh and the finale of Enterprise won't be airing until May along with the rest of most of television's season-enders. There're still eight episodes left. I'm gonna miss two or three of the characters, and the show's definitely been improving as it's continued, but I'm fine with letting it go. All these fan-efforts to save the series...eh, Trek needs a break. I'm perfectly fine having that extra hour of my life back on Friday nights.

<<Wow. I have a Kennedy Half Dollar. Wonder What it's worth...>>

50 cents.

Now, if you had a Walking Liberty half dollar... or a Ben Franklin... both of which were 100% silver and not the copper-nickle stuff... then you might have something worth more than it's face value.

"IMO, it's not weird. There's "common" and "uncommon" when it comes to attractions and preferences, there's no such thing as "normal". And I stress, IN MY OPINION (and not that I wanna broach the topic, but I feel the need to point out that exceptions are stuff like bestiality--which "furry" isn't even close to being the same thing as--and pedophelia. You'll never see me defending those, obviously. When giving consent becomes an issue, when it's violation of someone/something that can't consent, not to mention illegal [and sickening to everyone, I imagine], I don't even like the idea of there being "art" out there of those kinds of things)."
Tell me about it. I try to find something good and I have to go across a dragon making some guy blow him off or something else like that. I've come across an entire gallery of male anthro dinosaurs somewhere, showing not only single nudes but also pairs getting it on, that not only appears to be made by someone who is homosexual, but openly says he is and pretty much says if you have a problem with it to kiss his ass. Personally I find stuff like that to be trash let alone gross, and I don't like that kind of stuff. But I have to say, whoever really does like that kind of stuff, to each his own I guess.*shrugs*
"I'm not sure if I'd call it a "fetish". Makes it sound more taboo than it necessarily has to be. And anyway, doesn't a fetish more or less have to be something you can actually play out in reality, otherwise it's confined to being considered strictly a fantasy? People have leather fetishes, bondage fetishes (those first two seem to go hand in hand), certain role playing fetishes, but I don't think you can have a gargoyles fetish"
I've played a part from both the reality and fantasy standpoints. There's a pretty good chance you will find the details disturbing, so I shall spare you them.;) At one time I thought the bondage one would be interseting, but I doubt it would be for me. I haven't tried it before so I don't know if it is or not.
"(er, unless you do unspeakable things to stone statues...LOL, I have funny, disturbing imagery in my head of crazy people scaling tall old buildings to get their fix)."
LOL! Seems I'm not the first one to have that idea. Ok, shutting up now.*covers his mouth*
"and unafraid of knife play in bed, yikes"
And I say... Huh?*scratches head* Now that should be interesting.
"Nowhere Man, the show that premiered along with Star Trek Voyager?"
Can't say that I have. Unless it was on cable? I'm trying to think whether I had cable or not when ST:V came out. It's been so long I can't remember exactly so the answer is probably no.

Hi all. Newbie here.

I should definitely say you sound like a tolerant lot. Great stuff!

"I know enough about furry fandom at this point to be aware that anthropomorphized bird-like characters are liked by a large number of people, so it's no stretch to extend that to gargoyles and be able to understand it)."

This isn't what makes Brooklyn compelling to me; I've never cared much for anthropomorphised birds. I have, however, always liked dragons, and the facial similarity there seems a good explanation for why I think Brooklyn is cool.

PALADIN! I remember you!! :P

Kris>Yes, same station. They show reruns of Cop Rock and stuff there too. Fun channel over all. The Brilliant But Cancelled show is fun to watch. Reminds me of old shows I didn't know what happened to and introduces me to some shows I might have watched if given the chance. It's sad to watch that graveyard though because it is so true. Many of the intelligent comedies and drama were cancelled just because they were too intelligent. Or just too real. People prefer to veg in front of the tv to watch so called "reality", when all they are watching is trash. People don't want to think outside of the box too much. Most of the shows cancelled wanted you to do just that.

Voice actor pre-sighting: Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis are supposed to appear on the finale episode of "Enterprise" this week, reprising their roles from "ST:TNG." Everyone sing now... "Let's do the time warp again!"

Even rarer than a Kennedy half dollar... the Sacagawea gold dollar. Unless you buy a lot of stamps from vending machines, you've probably not see one of those recently.

Did you know... using combinations of half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies, there are 292 ways to make change for $1.00?

Siren >> Is Trio also the station that shows entire runs of brilliant-but-cancelled shows? I could've sworn I heard of a station like that in the U.S. that airs a whole bunch of series that were cut short.

BrooksBabe said >> "Sometimes these characters just have qualities that real people just don't have, and it's attractive."

Like Angelina Jolie!...aw, Siren beat me to mentioning her. However, if you were Johnny Depp (an unmarried version)...(and unafraid of knife play in bed, yikes)...you might have a shot. And vice versa--Jolie would have a damn good shot of landing Depp if we're talking pure superficial attraction for a second, etc etc...

>> "And sometimes the beak is what makes him attractive. Or is it the hair? Or the voice? Or the.... okay I think I'm starting to ramble here. I better go before I say something stupid."

Fair enough, I can definitely get behind loving the voice though (and sorry, I'm not trying to harp on the beak thing. I know enough about furry fandom at this point to be aware that anthropomorphized bird-like characters are liked by a large number of people, so it's no stretch to extend that to gargoyles and be able to understand it). Next to Goliath and Demona, Brooklyn may've had the nicest in the series (unless Kate Mulgrew [Anastasia/Titania] does it for you. I think the woman herself is pretty attractive, but her voice sounds so grandmotherly it's frightening. I only mention her 'cause she has a unique sound to her).

I wouldn't worry about saying anything stupid in a discussion like this. A lot of it comes out reading a little ridiculous from everyone, I find, no matter how hard you try to make your thoughts sound otherwise.

Brian said >> "Ha! I'm finally not alone! Isn't that something? I'm known to have quite the gargoyle fetish."

I'm not sure if I'd call it a "fetish". Makes it sound more taboo than it necessarily has to be. And anyway, doesn't a fetish more or less have to be something you can actually play out in reality, otherwise it's confined to being considered strictly a fantasy? People have leather fetishes, bondage fetishes (those first two seem to go hand in hand), certain role playing fetishes, but I don't think you can have a gargoyles fetish (er, unless you do unspeakable things to stone statues...LOL, I have funny, disturbing imagery in my head of crazy people scaling tall old buildings to get their fix).

Oh and Brian man, anytime you're curious about something like this, just look it up online. It's doubtful you'll ever be the only one in the world, even if it's a less common fascination (there're tons of kinder "f"-words like "fascination" I can use instead of fetish. I dunno what I have against the word fetish). Don't wait for someone else to bring it up on a message board where you can be pretty sure the topic probably isn't raised often. Otherwise you're just gonna be left feeling lonely for a good long while.

"I'm told there is nothing wrong with this sort of thing, whether it be gargoyles, furries, or the like, no matter how weird it may appear to others."

IMO, it's not weird. "But yet I'm also told, why should I or anyone give a damn what anyone else thinks about something like that anyway?"

Well they shouldn't really. Unless they're either curious, looking for someone to relate to on a particular issue, or both.

"It's just another building block in what makes someone who and what they are."

That's true, but I think people only tell you that 'cause we've all got a very live-and-let-live attitude. Sometimes that way of thinking is only useful in sweeping things under the rug so we don't have to look at them though. It's helpful when you're debating something with someone and the two of you can't even agree to disagree on the issue, but in other situations it really stifles debate. Discussion good. Don't like the discussion, don't participate. It'll pass soon enough (says I to anyone who's feeling uncomfortable while this topic continues).

Seriously, I said in my last post that I'd quelled my curiosity about Gargoyle fans' feelings on this sort of thing and didn't need to post further, but I couldn't help replying to other posts. Thanks for all the replies and not shying away from the subject. I'll probably take it to e-mail if I feel the need to say any more.

Battle Beast>> 1) The U.S. typically considers the side of a coin with the face to be the front - and for our quarter it is the likeness of George Washington.

On the "back," if you want to know, is currently a progressive schedule of state symbols, California being the most recently released. The series is slated to end in 2009 and mints will return to using the eagle/modified national seal for the reverse side.

2) There is the Kennedy Half Dollar, and though it's valid currency it's rarely circulated. In fact, I don't think I've seen any outside of a display case.

I know I mentioned this here before, but I added a thread about Gargoyles.

On the cable channel, Trio, they have a show called Brilliant, But Cancelled. They showcase tv series that had cult followings and great critic acclaim, but never made it with tv execs or huge audiences. Today they did show an animated show, The Critic, so they will cover animated shows. Perhaps if we make enough noise, they will have a segment on Gargoyles :) Click my name and add your comments.

eh, sorry for the double guys, but even i think goliath is a handsome non human enitity. I've always commended everyone who worked on gargoyles on actually making a main character non human, good, and a deep storyline. Instead of the whole, the lizards and greys and what not are all gonna kill everyone:/. Sometimes i wish goliath was real, but that would never happen anyway, oh well:(. Gargoyles does do one thing really really thing good, actually have love or compassion for a non human character. What would we do if alien's show up? Shoot at them or bring them unto our planet and show them how we really live, good or bad.

A fantasy is just that, a fantasy.

I believe it's no less "un-normal" for someone to have a crush on Demona, even a sexual one, then it is for them to have one on Angelina Jolie. Either way, they are both unattainable. I think we all do agree there. Some may think it is a little weird. It is. I agree there. I feel a little weird when I think of how Nightcrawler looks hot to me. I mean, he's blue, fuzzy, has a demon tail, and a mutant. And I feel even weirder because his form in the Evolution series is most appealing, so I can add onto the weird list that he's jail bait (he's 16 in the series I believe, I'm 26) ;) But hell, it's fun, it is not going to hurt me or anyone else for me to think he is adorable. I'd love to snuggle with Johnny Depp too, but I ain't going to get him either. It's all normal to me. No worries :)

I always thought the loincloth was a fashion statement and nothing more. It was about four weeks ago there was a can of worms opened about this and the similarities between Goliath and Zafiro. You try to figure something about them and you also look at something like the one I found (and mind you this is the same distributor that sells reproduction art like the statue of David and things like that) which gets me into thinking...
How many different kinds of gargoyles are there out there? Is there supposed to be something there? With Goliath, Demona, and other similar gargoyles, is the reproduction system like that of humans and other mammals, or is it something that is a little more complex? Some of these questions have already been answered so it's not worth the effort of beating your brains out to find the answers. The ones with similarities to the platypus, though I'm not entirely sure if that is really how it works, but it is one of the more somewhat interesting answers out there.

Gotta love open-minded people.

I see nothing wrong with people finding tv characters (cartoons, sci-fi, you get the picture) hot, or even having a sexual attraction to them. It just seems to be a natural thing for people to do. Sometimes these characters just have qualities that real people just don't have, and it's attractive.
I'm trying to say something, but it's just not coming out right. Dang these writer's blocks... they mess up everything!

If there was any controversy started thank God I wasn't the one who did it.:p
"Is Gargoyles adult art common? Do a lot of Gargoyles fans find many of the non-human characters attractive? I'd be interested in knowing people's opinions on whether or not they think that's "weird", and why or why not, etc. Personally I don't think it's any different from sci-fi fans being attracted to aliens on Star Trek (heck 7 Of 9 was borg and she was made out to be one of the biggest Trek sex symbols ever, though I hated what little I saw of Voyager and would take Troi/Marina Sirtis over Jeri Ryan any day. That's personal preference, not Gargoyles actor-loyalty). And is Greg aware of, or has he commented on, his characters being attractive to people?"
Ha! I'm finally not alone! Isn't that something? I'm known to have quite the gargoyle fetish. Though Matt was the first one here to know about it and now that I know that I'm not alone in the matter it can finally be brought out into the open. I'm told there is nothing wrong with this sort of thing, whether it be gargoyles, furries, or the like, no matter how weird it may appear to others. Wow, neither had I! Just checked out AMGC...now anything with Demona being nasty or violent in it is perfectly believable, but some of the other characters--!!! The 12 year old version of me wouldn't have considered what the characters in this series did in bed, but I guess if I'd stopped and thought about it during my recent viewing of the DVD, some of this may've come to mind. But wow...yeah, dunno if I'll be able to watch the series without thinking of some of what I just saw every once in a while. Not...that that's...a bad thing. Heh.

Brooklyn's very popular I see (even one of the site's mascots is based off of his character design). That's interesting. I always liked the character a lot, but I never viewed him as an attractive work of art. I can't get around the beak I guess.

Kythera > I wasn't paying attention to all the artists' names as I skimmed the archives, but I remember your "Stargazing" piece was beautiful. Actually a lot of the best works in that archive are the least porny. Thanks for sharing.

As for some pieces not being as great as others, as you said...eh, that's all right. A lot of those artists are probably just starting out, finding their style (or settling on _a_ style). And for me, to make up for there being less stellar art, at least I can appreciate the depictions of both male and female characters, and all the pairings people think up (or more-than-pairs, for that matter. one of my favorite pieces was a short story/fairy tale spoof of Goldilocks complete with one illustration where a female gargoyle Goldilocks [of age, of course] visits the castle and basically seduces the Trio in the classic "too much" [Broadway], "too little" [Lex], "juuust right" style of pickyness).

Someone mentioned "furries" further down. Hadn't considered it, but I guess Gargoyles kinda lends itself to the furry fandom quite well, if one wanted to interpret it as such. But then really, any fantasy/sci-fi where there're non-human, sentient characters could be grouped into that subgenre.

Heh, I think I got all the adult Gargoyles talk out of my system. Hopefully this doesn't stir up too much controversy (a little is always good though). It's safe for the kids to come out again.

Kris-- Sure thing! I'm a big fan of Enya, so...

As for adult Gargoyles fanart... there's plenty, and I've certainly contributed to that pile (and have some of it available on my website under "Solace"). There's also the Gargoyles X forum, which teems with naughty stuff, and AMGC--the adult version of the Monthly Gargoyles Contest. Just like the average, G-rated fanart and fanfic, though, there's a lot to sort through... some of it is really good, and some of it is really... uhmm... well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ^_^;

Gargs Guys in "The Sims"> If anyone was to make a male gargoyles character for "The Sims", I imagine it would probably be Goliath. I don't know how much you can mess with the faces when making new characters skins, but I'm guessing Goliath's human-like features would translate a lot more easily than Brooklyn's beak. Direct links to material for mature audiences have been generally discouraged in this and the other Station 8 forum, but linking to the fanfic archive or your own site and providing hints where to look has typically been okay.

"Weird" is in the eye of the beholder. Some people think liking furries is weird. Some people think liking Klingons and Vulcans is weird. So I'm sure there are people who think liking gargoyles is weird, too. To some people, the only thing that's "normal" is for men to like women and women to like men, and sex to be only for procreation. So there's quite a spectrum. And if you want to see what lies at the far other end... watch "C.S.I." sometime. ;)

Yes, 0Greg is aware of the adult art and fanfic. He's even done a late-night Q&A at the past few Gatherings where the more questions are taken. Not sure if they're planning to do this again at the Vegas con. Word on the schedule of events has been kind of slow in coming.

Kythera, thanks for that bit of info, much appreciated. Didn't know that was Enya music.

This talk about Sims Hot Date and Demona models has reminded me of something (never played The Sims, dunno if I'd like it. Too busy living my own life to play god to pixellated peoples' worlds. I avoid online multiplayer games for much the same reason, just not enough goddamn time. Shouldn't even be posting here today). I've seen some Gargoyles adult art recently, both male and female stuff (none of it was Gargoyles sex, just separate character pieces of them posing). I can't remember where most of it was seen, but I could probably easily find the Brooklyn piece.

Is Gargoyles adult art common? Do a lot of Gargoyles fans find many of the non-human characters attractive? I'd be interested in knowing people's opinions on whether or not they think that's "weird", and why or why not, etc. Personally I don't think it's any different from sci-fi fans being attracted to aliens on Star Trek (heck 7 Of 9 was borg and she was made out to be one of the biggest Trek sex symbols ever, though I hated what little I saw of Voyager and would take Troi/Marina Sirtis over Jeri Ryan any day. That's personal preference, not Gargoyles actor-loyalty). And is Greg aware of, or has he commented on, his characters being attractive to people?

Actually not that I have anything to post unless anyone requests that piece of nude Brooklyn, this makes me wonder about something--does this board have any restrictions about what sort of links are posted? Are links to adult art unacceptable?

This year, I was thinking of making my talk less on genetic engineering and more on gargoyles genetics and heritability. I'm just fishing for topics, but please let me know what you want to hear."

Brooksbabe: There appears to be more of a fetish with Demona than there is with anyone else. However, if there is anything you can do in your power to turn that around, then I don't think anyone is stopping you. Now if you knew how Sims Demona was put together you could do the same thing with, oh let's say Brooklyn for example.

What would have made it more interesting if there was a download count for each one on that list. How the hell do we know if Demona has outdone the mermaid couples and ninja turtles?

Kris-- "Heh, that song they used in it shows up everwhere, it's often used in trailers for fantasy films. Most recently, I remember it in the Tuck Everlasting trailer..."

That's the English-lyric version of "Book of Days" by Enya, from the album "Shepherd Moons." It was originally recorded with the words sung in Gaelic, and if memory serves correctly, was re-recorded with English lyrics specifically for the movie "Far and Away." The Gaelic version is on early pressings of the "Shepherd Moons" album, but recent pressings (i.e. post-"Far and Away") have the English version.

Until Broadway shows up on your doorstep, that is.... :)

MASCUBANANA - I don't think that "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is quite relevant here, since Morgan's taking Arthur off to Avalon isn't alluded to in the poem. (I might add that I found Morgan's involvement in the Green Knight adventure not-too-convincing; in particular, when the poem claims that her sending the Green Knight to Arthur's court was for the purpose of scaring Guinevere to death. In that case, what was the point of Gawain's rendezvous at the Green Chapel or being tempted by Bercilak's wife, both of which were taking place far away from Guinevere?)

If you read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the background for that is that Morgan is mad at Arthur and that's why she sends the Green Knight. Very good story for anyone interested and not hard to follow at all. Peace.

DPH - Actually, Greg revealed that years ago. And (something that I know that I've said here not too long ago) the notion of Morgan le Fay as Arthur's enemy was a relatively recent development in the legend; in earlier versions, she was an ally and protector to him, so it made sense in them for her to take him away to Avalon after the Battle of Camlann. It was only in later versions of the story (such as Malory's) that she became an antagonist - but they still had to keep on the original concept of her carrying him off to Avalon for healing. (Almost as if a medieval castle were remodelled into an 18th century style stately home, but with tidbits of the original architecture cropping up here and there amid the Georgian construction.)

At any rate, I doubt that we're ever likely to find out why the Morgan le Fay of the Gargoyles Universe agreed to help bring Arthur to Avalon - unless Greg gets to make "Pendragon", of course.

You're not alone Matt. This is very hard for me to type this up so please excuse any missing details. My sole remaining grandfather passed away on the 5th. He had a quad bypass operation a week prior, which went fine. However, just a few days later he got a staff infection, and later passed away while under sedation. (He was on a respirator, but his body would reject it so he had to be kept under sedation while it was on...which he later became dependant on.) They pumped him so full of anti-biotics to fight off the infection that his kidneys failed. My father flew out that very day to California to be with my grandmother, but my mother, older brother, and I flew out on Sunday. (For those that don't have a calendar handy, the fifth was a friday.) Well, my sister-in-law was watching the house while we were gone. Things were going fine until tuesday. Sometime during the night, one of my dogs hemmoraged to death. She was found the next morning back in my parent's bedroom in the very spot she always slept. I was expecting her to pass sometime soon since she was rather old. (She would've been 12 this July.) However, this took me by complete suprise since she looked like she was doing so well. That very afternoon she was playing with my niece and nephiew like she was a puppy again. For the next few days, I was on the verge of completely loosing it. (I don't mean suicidal, I'm talking going NUTS!) Even after just over a week I still find myself looking for her only to find her not there anymore.

I've linked a picture of her along with her brother (from the same litter believe it or not) and my mother's dog. Shadow (the one that passed) is on the left, her brother (Duke) is on the right. (They're half german sheppard/half yellow lab, with Duke looking like the father and vice versa.) Frosty is sitting in the middle, and he's a tiny toy poodle (pure breed).

So needless to say Matt, I completely understand what you're going through. It's never easy, and it never will be. The only thing we can do is get through it to the best of our ability and somehow survive with our sanity intact.

About dropping out of High school: I graduated in 1997. Our high school , temecula valley high was getting really bad. The education was so bad that I started to rebell senior year and almost did not graduate, I went from a 4.0 to a 2.0 I think sometimes the stress of the pure pressure, and the kids who are at the school goofing off and starting fights can lead to some not graduating.
However this is not an exuse not to graduate. I was lucky you could graduate with a D average in 1997 now you have to have a C avrage and above. I belive the schools need to be able to have the enforcment value they had back in the 50's I think it will help to control kids who don't want to be there. It makes it tough for us who want to be there when kids are in the back causing the teacher stress and he/she can't do anything about it.

My experince at my school: there was a knife fight in the classroom because some kid did'nt want to do his homework. That really scared me and I got fusterated and did'nt want to be there anymore but I toughed it out because I relized in american society you need your GED or high school to get a job anywhere now.

I am a vet tech and now give anesthesia to dogs and monitor surgery I did'nt need to go to college either. Without graduating High school I would'nt of been able to get this job.

That John Rhys-Davies film that Vinnie just linked to? Looks like it could be really good. I don't know my Old Testament as well as I should, is this the Biblical Esther that it's focusing on?

That's quite a trailer. Heh, that song they used in it shows up everwhere, it's often used in trailers for fantasy films. Most recently, I remember it in the Tuck Everlasting trailer (love that book so much. The movie's a little inferior to the book, but it was a pretty faithful adaptation with some quality performances).

whitbourne: i do appreciate it, thanks:). We were in deep financial trouble 5 years ago, i didn't relize that the economy was remotely bad back then, and it's 50 times worse today. I was about to not quit, until my family was turned down by welfare. My mom, dad, and sister were working, but that was not enough to pay house mortgage, taxes, heating bills etc. We got rid of extra things like cable and internet, kept basic phoneline. And it still wasn't enough, my mom is trying to get disability now, and we don't know if we'll get that. I did go for my ged, but bombed on the math test. I studied for 3 month, and the questions were foreign. But, i passed everything else with flying colors. Matt>I am very sorry for your loss :(

On dropping out of high school, personally, unless you plan to get your GED, it's not the brightest idea. Having your diploma or GED will help you get into college and a better job. And if you choose not to go to college but drop out with no plans on getting a GED, you won't get much further then flipping burgers or saying "Thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart.". If you want to drop out because socially it sucks, that is the worst reason to do so. If that was the case, then every other teen would drop out of school because frankly, school sucks for just about everyone.

What kind of jobs are really out there that a 16 or 17 year old high school dropout can support a family on? Many, many years ago, a young man could get work in a mill or a factory at that age, but that was before the federal government came up with all the laws we have now about minimum wage and child labor. You can't carry a whole family by working at a place like McDonalds. Better to tough it out and finish school, so you at least stand a chance of improving your situation.

In this day and age, dropping out of high school can be a serious, serious blunder, plan or no. I find it tough to accept that there are people who are forced to drop out for financial reasons, and I think that stands as a stunning indictment of the value our society places on education. If a family so in need of help that children feel they need to leave school and jeopardize their entire futures to support them, then that family deserves more social support than they get. You just cannot get by anymore without a high school diploma.

Best of luck getting your GED. It's a hugely positive step.

Whoa, looks like I inadvertantly started a whole conversation on lonliness. Oops.
In my mind, I see no problem with being alone on Valentine's Day (I've never had someone to share the day with). Sure, a lot of my friends are in relationships, and spend the day together with each other, but then my single friends and I all go out for a single's night. Much more fun. Don't have to worry if the other person is enjoying themselves, and you get to pick on all the couples around you (more fun to do it in a movie theatre... they're never quite sure whose the annoying person). Although, due to icy roads, single's night was cancelled. What I hate is all those people who say you HAVE to be with someone on V-Day, and that the day's no fun if you don't have someone special to share it with. Well to all those who think that, I say :P

Matt > Don't think like that. You'll find someone soon. I mean, you're still young. There's no rush. You're just lucky that you don't have the opposite sex chasing after you and treating you like you're a piece of meat (yes, I've had a lot of bad experiences with guys).

It's one thing to be alone. It's another thing to be lonely. Perfectly natural and healthy to be lonely and yes, even sorry for yourself that you are single on Valentine's Day. But so what? I'm engaged and V-Day is a bore to me. It think it's a scam personally. Just a day to sell flowers that will die in a week, a card that will be thrown away in a day, and chocolate that will stick to your butt for 10 years. I'd rather treat V-Day like anyother. I don't NEED a day to be loved or give love. If I want a special love day, I'd choose one more personal. That's what an anniversary is for.

But to say because you feel sad on Valentine's Day because you don't have a sweetie means you wouldn't be happy with a sweetie is kinda on the ignorant side. I understand that day is important to some people. And I also know people get lonely. Perfectly normal. We all get lonely sometimes. Doesn't mean we are miserable people all the time no matter what. Has anybody else been having difficulties visiting Station 8 recently? I've found in the last couple of days problems in going to various sites here (such as the comment room and "Ask Greg"); often, I get messages such as "cannot connect to database - too many connections". Have other people been experiencing these problems, or is it just me?

listen, you wanna disagree with me, fine, but in my life and in the lives of many people i know, this has proven to be true. most of my adult life i've been single, and most Valentine's Days i've been single. i've been on both sides of this and i've learned that when i felt i could only be happy if i was with someone i was destined to be alone. it is only when i stopped worrying about finding someone and finding happiness that i found i was already happy. its like people say, you'll find someone just when you stop looking. i've had many friends and family members get into this same problem, "i'm unhappy cuz i don't have a significant other" and i've been there myself and i always tell them and myself that they should just stop worrying about that and live their lives. be happy and when it happens it'll happen. and to add on my previous statement, no one wants to date someone who cannot be happy when they are single AND whines about it. that only leads to codependent relationships. thats what i've learned in my experience, take it or leave it.

I was single for Valentine's this year. I broke off a long-term relationship not too long ago. Amazingly, this was the first year that I remember not being bothered by Valentine's at all. I think it's because I've found that even if you have someone to be with for this holiday, the day can still turn out to be disappointing. There's simply too much expectation loaded onto it. I think that is the key to dealing with Valentine's.

Also, it helps to understand that there are years in which you'll be with someone, and years in which you won't. *shrug* That's okay.

Matt> I've heard that statement a thousand times, and it always comes off sounding patronizing. It's easy for people who have significant others to tell people they shouldn't be unhappy because they don't. It's true that people who are desperately unhappy with themselves will never find a person to "complete" them and fix their lives. But it's natural to feel a desire for companionship, closeness, intimacy, etc. And on Valentine's Day when everyone in the waking world seems to be flaunting their togetherness, it's painfully obvious that you're unattached.

if you can't find happiness being single, then you'll never find happiness having a significant other. who is going to want to date someone who can't be happy being single? when you realize that your happiness does not have to depend on someone else being with you and loving you, you'll find that someone else. i know people are going to disagree with me on this, but this is what i've learned through my own experiences and in watching others experience the same thing.

Yes, it was quite a surprise seeing Greg using a Batman analogy to explain Canmore's actions as the Hunter in "City of Stone Part Four", even after I'd long thought that the Hunters were almost like a twisted version of Batman (appropriate, in a way, when you consider that the production team was nervous about the possibility that "Gargoyles" would be seen as a rip-off of "Batman: TAS").

The Hunter's hanging back in those battles which Greg mentioned, by the way, does fit in with one element that I'd noticed about the Canmore family in the series; it seems to have had a strong streak of cowardice in it. Duncan, rather than dealing with Macbeth and Findlaech himself, employs Gillecomgain to do his dirty work for him, and when Gillecomgain starts to turn against him, gets Macbeth to dispose of him rather than acting himself. He attacks Demona and her clan while they're in stone sleep in the daytime when they can't fight back (though they survive due to his timing error in starting to smash them in the evening). He does do some fighting in the battle with Macbeth, but his idea of how to deal with Macbeth is to have one of his sidekicks attack Macbeth from behind while he engages him in the front (the scheme is foiled thanks to Demona, of course). Canmore not only holds back a little in the battles with Macbeth, but only has at him directly when Macbeth has his back turned on him to remonstrate with Demona. And then, of course, in present times, Jon Canmore displays a strong element of cowardice in first letting Jason glower him down whenever he expresses his doubts about their pursuing Goliath's clan (even to the point where he publicly frames the gargoyles for the destruction of the clock tower without even a hint that he protested when Jason and Robyn told him to do it), and then shows a very strong element of moral cowardice when, after shooting Jason, he won't take responsibility for it and blames the gargoyles instead. And, on top of all that, you've got Goliath's summing it up in "The Journey" about Castaway "hiding his face behind a mask". (Admittedly, this discussion left out Jason and Robyn.)

One advantage of Canmore's publicly treating the invasion of Scotland as for the purpose of slaughtering gargoyles rather than restoring him to the throne, of course, was that it led to Bodhe suggesting that Macbeth short-circuit the Hunter's propaganda by forswearing the gargoyles, and Demona, in turn, angrily deserting Macbeth. Though I doubt that Canmore could have foreseen that; it strikes me as one of those things that's far easier to predict via hindsight.

Anybody read the answer to Todd's question to Ask Greg? I, for one, found the analogy interesting. The small problem I have with the analogy is the comparison of Macbeth to the Riddler. From what we know of Macbeth during this time period, he brought the land into an era of peace and prosperity and probably worked to amend all the wrongs of the previous kings. I guess that explains why his original campaign was against the Gargoyles, not against Macbeth. Macbeth's base of support was the gargoyles, wipe them out and then he could make war to establish the claim for the throne for himself.

The last gathering journal for 2003 was processed. Yea!! Now, it's 361 more questions until the start of the 2004 journals.

Oh great, another dumb question that doesn't belong in Ask Greg:

renee writes...

what is the whole concept behind racism in the drama of orthelo

Please tell me that under the upcoming new system that question gets deleted on the spot as being irrelevant.

Watched my tape of "Sanctuary" today, as usual for Valentine's Day. One of the leading thoughts that I had while watching it was: I hope that Disney will do a Season Two DVD - after seeing the Season One DVD, my old "Gargoyles" tapes' flaws seem all the more noticeable. It'll be great to have a cleaner, clearer picture. Of course, since it takes time to make these things, it'll be a while before that DVD comes out (assuming that Disney makes it); I might still be using my old tape to watch "Sanctuary" next Valentine's Day, in fact, though I hope not.

The newspaper photo of Thailog flying against the moon that Elisa was looking at (before she realized that Thailog was in town) bears an uncanny resemblance to the Bat-Signal.

There's not much else that's new to say about this episode today, so I'll sign off. Today is also the anniversary of Arizona becoming a state (in 1912), so it would be an appropriate day to watch my tape of "Cloud Fathers", if not for "Sanctuary".

St. Valentine
At least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, are mentioned in the early martyrologies under date of 14 February. One is described as a priest at Rome, another as bishop of Interamna (modern Terni), and these two seem both to have suffered in the second half of the third century and to have been buried on the Flaminian Way, but at different distances from the city. In William of Malmesbury's time what was known to the ancients as the Flaminian Gate of Rome and is now the Porta del Popolo, was called the Gate of St. Valentine. The name seems to have been taken from a small church dedicated to the saint which was in the immediate neighborhood. Of both these St. Valentines some sort of Acta are preserved but they are of relatively late date and of no historical value. Of the third Saint Valentine, who suffered in Africa with a number of companions, nothing further is known.

Well, that's one version. I've got the one according to Roman legend.
During the third century, Valentinus was imprisoned for his religious beliefs and was sentenced to death. Legend has it that while he was jailed, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer's blind daughter.
The night before he died, he wrote a farewell note to the girl signed, "From your Valentine."
His death sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 269 A.D.

This is all according to legend. Don't know which one actually holds true.

Happy St. Valentine's Day Everyone!!!! Just thought I'd drop a quick line about the Legend Of St. Valentine. I do have to warn you that I am a little fuzzy on the details, however, i will give it my best shot. If I'm wrong, get over it ;p .
St. Valentine was originally a priest in, I think, Ireland or Scotland or Rome, one of those places. i said i was a little rusty. Anywho. The local government had forbbiden Marriages as it was wartime, and married men were less likely to go off and fight. A local preist, Valentine, learned of this and decided to perform the cerimonies in secret. Valentine did this for about a year or until the local Government found out. Valentine was killed for performing these cerimonies. As a result of his willingness to defy the government for his "flock", The Catholic Church eventually honored him with Sainthood. In today's modern times, the legend of this Saint has been pushed aside for the commercialism that runs rampent.

Card companies have changed mighty Eros, or Cupid if you follow the Roman path, from a mighty child of Aphrodite to a dodgering cheribuim. No, I'm not bitter, I promise. Eros was a mighty and favored servent of his own mother. A servent who had never known a love of his own until he came upon Physce. A kind, yet semi vain Mortal. He fell in love with her, there was drama. Nuff said.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. Have a happy V-day all!!!!!!
