PATRICK - Based on what Greg Weisman said in his ramble for "Temptation", it apparently was the toy company who came up with the motorcycle first - and I somehow doubt that they were too happy about it getting blown up in Act I. :)

Graphic novels are becoming the new fad for novels and movies. Peter S. Beagle wrote a graphic novel for The Last Unicorn which will be out sometime this year.
More studios are considering releasing graphic novels of their movies too.

Ah yes, another good question. The graphic novel is an important part of comics these days. Most stories now instead of like in the old days of being one or two issues are now four to six issues so they can later be sold as one long graphic novel.

Should Greg do this? Honestly, I can see the appeal in both ways of doing this and I have not reached a preference yet in regards to "Gargoyles". I know a lot of comics these days read better as graphic novels than as single monthly issues. Take Marvel's top writer now, Brian Michael Bendis. He's a specatular writer, I love almost everything he writes. But then, his work reads much better as a graphic novel, when you have it all down in front of you at once, as opposed to reading bits and pieces in monthly installments.

It all depends on Greg's writing style for this too, I guess. Though, with six issues a year, the wait for a completed story will be much longer than any of the mainstream comics.

Another thought. How many issues will cover enough content for one episode? I think it would take at least two. Will the stories be compressed for the comic book format? Or will we see more "decompressed" storytelling techniques like the 5- and 6-part stories at Marvel?

Comic > I'm definitely interested in seeing how the gargoyles deal with their new "living conditions"--that is, returning to the castle. Xanatos isn't exactly a model citizen, and this will create some delicious tension.

So was the motorcycle put into "Temptation" because the toy division needed product placement, or did the toy come about after the episode? Somehow I suspect the former.

DUDETTE - I think that you'll have a much better reception here if you post when you've got something to say, as opposed to posting when you've got to say something - and posts with little more content than "How's it going?" definitely fall into the latter category.

Watched my DVD of "Temptation" today. A few thoughts on it.

I forgot to mention, in my comments on "The Thrill of the Hunt" a couple of days ago, about the mild conflict between Goliath and Elisa on the whole "You can't stay in the castle much longer; you'll need to find a new home" issue. I'm not certain now if I seriously thought that the gargoyles were going to wind up moving out of the castle for most of the series, but I do like how the series took care to build it up. And even more how it was able to delay the gargoyles leaving until "Enter Macbeth" through a very convincing way: Goliath being unable to accept the fact that the ancestral home of his clan, the last link that it has to the 10th century, isn't his home any more, but belongs to his greatest human enemy.

"Temptation" stands out, of course, as giving us a little more insight into Demona and her hatred of humans, though we'd have to wait until "City of Stone" for the full story. We find out here that she wasn't under the sleep spell and was lying when she claimed that she'd been in "Awakening Part Four" (of course, alert viewers would probably have figured out that she was lying, through such things as her being even more hateful towards humans now than she was a thousand years before, and the fact that she'd had time to receive her name from humans). More importantly, we see Demona giving Brooklyn a guided tour of the dark side of humanity. (You've got to admit that "Temptation" definitely made it clear that this wasn't a conventional Disney cartoon - if the audience hadn't figured it out already - when Demona's guided tour included a husband and wife fighting to the point where they're throwing things at each other and their son is running out of the house in tears, and the aftermath of a murder scene.)

Being a big fan of the gargoyles' medieval roots (when I first started watching the series, that aspect of them was perhaps the thing that most appealed to me about it), I liked the inclusion of the Cloisters, and Brooklyn getting Goliath to come to it by telling him that it was like their original time.

Two of my favorite animation bits: the little magical flash when Demona closes the Grimorum after zombifying Goliath, and the lighting effects when the sun rises at the end and we see Elisa shielding her eyes a little before going inside.

I still regard Elisa's solution to Demona's spell with mixed feelings. On the one hand, the spell isn't genuinely gone, although the matter never resurfaced through the rest of the series (and with the Grimorum being destroyed, I doubt that it will even if Greg does indeed get to revive the story through the deal with Slave Labor). On the other, we got to see a case of Elisa coming up with a very ingenious solution, which I liked.

Hi folks! This is off topic, but since I know both artists and art lovers hang here and/or at least view this forum, I'm posting here as well. Forgive me, but it isn't gargoyles related >.< Feel free to remove the post if it's too off topic for the room.

I'm conducting a art and art lover survey for a research project -- it's 12 questions, very short and very anonymous. If you all could take a a few moments of time and fill out the survey I'd really appreciate it! Thanks so much for reading :]

Love the news about the comic. Much joy when I read it.

What do I expect? Well, some re-introductions definately, but handled better than TGC did. Personally, I would like to see a little more of the secondary characters, like Matt and Morgan. Not too much, but enough to get a third point of view (from the two, namely Morgan). Everything in TGC was almost force-fed black and white, no nuance.

Firstly, I ought to add a word of thanks to Martin Lund, Greg Guler and Greg Weisman for battling on for the future of 'Gargoyles'. I'm going to be keeping my fingers crossed for Creature Comics.com.

Greg: Good question. I imagine the most important thing will be to make sure that a new audience can understand and follow the storyline even if they've never seen the show, or only saw it many years ago. Until the entirety of Season Two is released, I'd imagine that the number of people who have a grasp of the entire canon until "Hunter's Moon" would be relatively small -- and the idea would obviously be to attract more people still.

The article about collecting the series into trades -- which admittedly may not apply to Creature Comics' publications -- makes me wonder if it will be designed to be highly arc-based. That would fit Greg's writing style, anyway.

Since Greg's said he'd start by doing the Third Season he was never allowed to do, that's what I would expect. Inferring from TGC's structure, it would appear that there's an episode for each of the characters. All the same, I'd imagine there'd be a strong need to establish at least the main villains and set-up before the series gets too crazy with Katana etc. So I guess a big story with the Quarrymen and a big story with Demona would be high on the agenda. But I guess s3 was designed to draw in a lot of the characters anyway, so perhaps reintroducing them wouldn't be all that difficult. The start of Season One had Lex and Goliath meeting The Pack: telling a story about Lex and Goliath meeting a group of Tricksters doesn't need to alienate new viewers too much (apart from the Puck continuity baggage, perhaps).

All the same, I would be surprised if much is made early on of the secondary characters -- Bluestone, Maria Chavez, Macbeth etc. Often 'Gargoyles' put in cameos and then built on them, and I think a comic version would be wise to do the same thing. This means that there's room for the characters to be expanded later, and the fans know they're still around, but they don't need to be at the centre of the action at the beginning. People need to get acquainted again (or for the first time) with Goliath and Elisa; then the Trio, Hudson, Angela and Bronx; then Xanatos, Owen, Fox, Alex and Demona. That's a lot to be getting on with.

I'm not actually terribly bothered what areas the stories are drawn from. If the comic universe is built up very cautiously indeed so as to cater much more strongly to new and lapsed fans than to those who have the first 65 pretty well memorised, I think that would be perfectly sensible. Greg has lots of experience with this sort of thing, and has always come up trumps before, so I'm just happy to see what he comes up with.

One thing that I noticed was that Greg said that the comic would be "post-Hunter's Moon", as opposed to "post-The Journey" - which makes me wonder how canonical "The Journey" will be in the context of the comic. Now, we know that "The Journey" was the one episode of the Goliath Chronicles that Greg worked on and considered canonical; on the other hand, we know that it was influenced by the fact that it was Greg's last episode for "Gargoyles" and he knew it, so that it was designed as a farewell to the series - particularly in Vinnie's role (his going to Japan being an allegory of Greg's departure). So while obviously a lot of the basics from "The Journey" would be the same (Castaway setting up the Quarrymen, Margot's surname being Yale and her occupation Assistant District Attorney, Margot being a civilian "anti-gargoyle" figure - almost the Gargoyle Universe's "Senator Kelly", to use X-Men terminology), the details could very well differ. Though I still hope that a lot of the great elements from "The Journey" would get in, such as Castaway's beautifully ironic recruitment speech and Margot's statements about gargoyles being contrasted to the way that they're actually behaving. (I don't know how well this idea would work in comics format, but it'd be tempting to have a lot of the "For Those of You Just Joining Us" information that Bishansky mentioned as a must done in the format of a "Nightwatch Special Report" hosted by Travis Marshall, filling in the basic information about the public revelation of gargoyles.)

I do hope that we'd see the Quarrymen handled more effectively - as in, preserving the "ordinary frightened citizen" element in them much longer than the Goliath Chronicles did, and dealing with the ramifications of Castaway's true identity as Jon Canmore. Maybe also some hints (although I doubt that Greg would want to reveal the full story for a long time) as to why the Illuminati would be supporting the Quarrymen to begin with (it's got to be something below the surface; I can't imagine the Society seriously wanting the gargoyles smashed to rubble for the same reason that Xanatos doesn't seriously want the gargoyles smashed to rubble - you can do a lot less with shattered stone than you can with living gargoyles, so demolishing them would be wasteful).

Of course, there'd also be the question (which the Goliath Chronicles ignored after "The Journey") as to how much Xanatos can be trusted (particularly since the gargoyles were never the long-term ends of his schemes, but only the means - just because he's given up hunting the clan doesn't mean that he's given up wanting immortality or stealing his competitors' research). And maybe (eventually down the road) the question as to how the public exposure of the Manhattan clan will affect gargoyles elsewhere (such as in London, for example).

What do I expect? Well, if we don't see that "Double Date" plot within a year or so I'll be surprised. More development on the Broadway-Angela relationship, and Demona needs to come back within the first year to re-establish her presence in the universe (and in readers' minds). I doubt we'll see anything connecting to the spin-offs at first- which is probably a good idea, considering that too many spin-off titles helped lead to Dreamwave Transformers' failure.

You know what I'd do if I was Greg? Use the license as a springboard to publish the Gargoyles Encyclopedia he wrote in a comic-book format, a la DC's Who's Who, the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe or Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye. I've been waiting and hoping to see that for years... and besides, it'd give casual fans a nice refresher.

Okay, so new topic, with this new comic book news, what do you expect we'll all see? Not necessarily what we want to see, but what do we expect?

I don't think Greg will immedietly jump into his continuation. He'll probably have to do a new introduction story... by this I mean, re-introduce everyone to the characters and this world. I'm sure that re-introduction will be post-"Hunter's Moon".

I'm also expecting, among other things, a better portrayal of John Castaway and the Quarrymen. There's lots of potential with Thailog becoming the "Big Bad" of the series.

I'm sure I can think of more things, but just to get the ball rolling.

Watched "The Thrill of the Hunt" on the DVD today. A few comments.

This is probably one of the funnier episodes in the first season, even if it does involve a serious element (Lexington's betrayal by a group of "heroes" who aren't as heroic as they seem). This comes from two particularly great comic relief moments: first, the Pack's overblown announcer (the guy's just as bad as Sevarius), with lines like "Oh, no, it's the Evil Ninjas!", and second, Fox and Hyena's exasperation when Billy and Susan show up eagerly asking them lots of questions just when they've caught Goliath and Lexington. (The looks on their faces is priceless.)

Oh, yes, and a third bit that I find amusing, when Wolf, seeing Lexington, says to Fox, "Hey, this one isn't as big as -" and Fox quickly cuts him off with an elbow-jab.

I've said this before, but I still find Dingo's "Central American war" remark intriguing in light of "The Green"; yes, he's not present for that "Central American war", but two of his fellow Pack-members are.

Wolf does a little Irving Berlin-mangling with his "Wolves gotta hunt" line. (Which, at least, is a lot less violent than the sort of mangling he'd really like to be doing.)

Anybody besides me wondering about the fact that there's a prison guard listening in on the conversation between Xanatos and Owen at the end? And he's probably not Macbeth in disguise.

Dingo carries out the first act of vandalism against architectural gargoyles in the series when he panics and shoots the head off of one of the statues. The first, but definitely not the last, once the Quarrymen show up. (I can only wonder how much property damage Castaway's team will cause; indeed, I'd be amazed if there'd be that many gargoyle statues left in New York after they've been on the rampage for a few weeks.)

Moving away from this episode - I was recently reading in the news about New York City deciding not to build that stadium as part of a bid for the 2012 Olympics, and I suddenly got another creativity demon about how, in the Gargoyles Universe, the Olympics Committee might decide not to pick New York because of the gargoyles there ("Sorry, but we can't take any chances of those things eating the athletes"), and several indignant New Yorkers, upon finding out about that, becoming all the more anti-gargoyle with an attitude of "Those blasted freaks cost us the 2012 Olympics! Let's run 'em out of town - or worse!"

LOL @ Greg W's "replace me with Joss Whedon/Neil Gaiman" comment.

And he tells us to cross our fingers but not hold our breath just yet, but then goes on to say something like this!

"Our direction is pretty straight forward. The book we'll be styled to look like the series, and my plan is to pick up pretty much where "Hunter's Moon" left off and do the "third season" that I wanted to do (as opposed to the GOLIATH CHRONICLE version). (The year is 1996. Although I'm probably not going to go out of my way to put a date in the content of the comic that'll scare away a new audience.
There's always ASK GREG to fill people in on timeline details. And eventually, I'm hoping to catch up to the present.) I'm also eventually hoping that this thing is such a massive success that it'll lead to all the spin-offs we've been talking about for years."

Continuation! Possible spin-offs some day! So awesome.

I really hope this comic thing works out. This is the most excited I've been about Gargoyles since the 2198 contest four years ago. The DVD was great, but I had the episodes on tape, so it was just the same material in better condition.

After ten years, everything that can be said about Gargoyles has been said. I've been dying for new material. Ask Greg helps a little, but sometimes it's more frustrating than helpful to get tidbits that hint at the plans Greg has for the Gargoyles universe.

Todd Et Al.> About my post about Greg not being involved... well, now I am satisfied.

Bronx> Todd mentioned about Bronx grabbing the tale of the Steel clan 'bot. You know, Bronx isn't a bull dog. He's a dolphin in disguise. Bronx is highly underrated. He is very smart and can do a lot to help out. (It's a good thing Goliath took him on the world tour.)

But, that bit When he grabs the tail always amuses me.
The Hudson leap and stab/slash was always cool to me, and we know from this that he isn't just some doddering old foggey.

Xanatos> Quite honestly, I thought that he was going to be the Gargoyle's ally and Demona was the enemy... I also thought that Elisa would be a minor character. When I first saw Xanatos attack the Gargoyles, I realised that *he* was going to be their enemy, and Demona was going to be a *second* enemy. I thought this was cool because how many shows have *two enemies* in one episode? (Maybe Batman or X-Men but rarly; the original 60's batman only had two once in a blue moon). Aladdin only had one per ep. Gummie Bears only ever had... oh blast what the devil was his name?? the midget Ogre and... oh was it dukie? something like that. You see waht I mean.

And then they added Macbeth! I was like, this is too cool.

Another bit from Awakening part 5 that I LOVE is the part where Demona comes in through the smoke with here eyes glowing. Too cool.

That is all I will say.

The new CR system is up and running IN A TEST AREA. You can access it by clicking on my name.

Right now it's _TEST_ONLY_ and is not "officially live". So if you've got something you want EVERYONE to see, say it in THIS, THE OLD CR. When the new CR goes "live" the old CR links will redirect to the new place.

I want to get people testing this ASAP and tell me what isn't working. There are things that still feel a bit hacky to me but for the most part, things look solid.

well, the Mayan Clan generally doesn't use names, only the pendant wearers have them and if they gave their pendent away they go nameless again, so its more of a title than a name... so you could say the Mayan Clan still goes by the no-name tradition... its just that the only 4 gargs with a title are the only 4 gargs alive at the moment...

The no-name thing must've been something only the scottish gargoyles really used extensively, because every clan we've seen during the world tour had members with names. So either the rest of the clans gave up that tradition as they encountered humans on a more regular basis, or they never had it to begin with.

As for Demona, I'm betting she kept the name both as a reminder of her tie to Macbeth, and as a sense of irony for her.

Which kinda begs the question--why did she keep it all these years? Why even reveal it to Goliath? Why did she want him to know it before she killed him? It's not like it's brag-worthy.

I realize the out-of-show answer is, "so we'd have something to know her by". But in-show?

For one, Macbeth is still alive and calls her by it, so I guess that any time he's caught up with her over the years she's heard it. I suppose it also serves a function. When introducing herself to Xanatos or any other members of possible uneasy alliances over the centuries, it comes in handy. Though why not just create a new alias every time? It's kinda funny that she would feel nostalgic about it when she hates humans so much and naming things is their domain.* Just another detail of Demona's complicated nature.

*Well...I guess that ends up only being a trait that's specific to the Scottish clan, right? 'Cause didn't most--if not ALL--of the other clans in the world feature gargoyles with names?

Did we have ANY major characters--or even recurring guest characters--introduced in the series who went nameless? Seems that in a series where your focal race (at least this sect of them) shuns naming eachother, you'd have at least a few characters who go without.

Sorry, I'd assumed that the defenses had gone up since we hadn't had any spam for a while (until this morning).

BATTLE BEAST - Aside from the fact that we don't know whether the comic book is a real report or just a hoax, the reports about it claimed that Greg was going to be writing it, so I honestly don't think that there's anything to be worried about. (And if it is a hoax, I strongly advise the hoaxer to stay in hiding, since his or her fate once all those angry fans go looking for the person who got their hopes up and then dashed them is *not* likely to be pretty.)

Watched Part Five of "Awakening" on DVD today. Some comments on it.

The scene where Hudson slams his fist down on the control panel in frustration and just happens to hit the button that ejects the disk strikes me as one of the biggest cases of dumb luck in the entire series.

Despite Xanatos's early warnings, the gargoyles fail to strike the three labs simultaneously; the Cyberbiotics tower is able to warn the underground base shortly before Hudson and Bronx show up, and one of them then warns Fortress-1 just before Goliath and Demona storm in. The gargoyles really need to synchronize their efforts a little better.

The gargoyles' raids on the Cyberbiotics labs "recovering" disks that the gargoyles thought were stolen but actually weren't suddenly reminded me this time around of a joke or urban legend that I'd come across. While it has several variations, the basic idea is this: a man suddenly discovers that his wallet or watch or some other valuable possession of his is missing, and makes the discovery in a way that makes him believe that someone nearby stole it from him. He at once grabs hold of the suspected thief, saying to him, "All right, let's have that wallet/watch/whatever", which the suspected thief hands over to him at once. Only, when the man gets back home, he discovers that he'd inadvertently left that same possession of his there all along.

One of my favorite scenes: as Fortress-1 comes crashing down into the river in flames, Elisa pulls up by the riverside in her car, gets out, watches the scene, then sees Goliath and Demona flying away from it, scarcely able to believe her eyes.

Greg pointed out in one of his rambles one neat little irony that I'd missed in Goliath and Demona's argument (the one that they have before Goliath goes to see Elisa): when Demona is fuming about the Wyvern Massacre, Goliath tells her that the people responsible for it have been dead for a thousand years. Greg mentioned the impact that that remark must have had on Demona, who deep down inside knows that she's one of the people responsible for it, though she can't consciously admit it. Great point. (For that matter, we find out in "Shadows of the Past" that the other two people most responsible for the massacre haven't been as dead as Goliath thought for the past thousand years.)

Bronx fans must have definitely gotten a kick out of Bronx grabbing hold of the Steel Clan robot by the tail and neatly dodging its attacks. (I also like the bit where Hudson leaps into the fight and we get a Steel Clan robot's-eye-view of Hudson neatly skewering it with his sword.)

Another scenelet that I really like: Xanatos, Demona, and Owen watching the big battle, with Xanatos looking thoughtful as the Steel Clan can't entirely hold their own against Goliath.

I've mentioned this before, but the way that Demona reveals her name raises some expectations about how she got it that are later on shown to be false. The first time that I saw this episode, I assumed that she got the name from the humans whom she was preying upon, as a mark of their fear towards her. And then, in "City of Stone", it turns out that she received it from a human *ally* as a compliment to her fighting skills rather than as a comment on her nature.

So how many people thought that Xanatos was going to be gone from the series for good when you saw him in the police car at the end? I'm not certain that I was expecting him back - at least, not as quickly as he actually was.

I could say more - about Goliath's horror at realizing how much Demona's changed (we even see tears in his eyes), about Goliath having to choose between saving Demona or Elisa and choosing Elisa, and how he almost does in Xanatos (who still maintains his sang froid even when being dangled over the battlements - one thing that makes him different from your conventional super-villain) but Elisa stops him, but I'm not certain that there's that much new I could say about it. So I'll close here.

No, really. I was talking with a friend and we fougth a bit...He said that Elisa hates Demona as much as Demona hates Elisa (-_-)I desagree, i do not think Elisa is actually able to hate so much, even if she can hate. I think Elisa felt pity for her...perhaps fear that she hurt Goliath or get her goal? .

D. TAINA - I assumed that the guard whom Demona was holding was Vinnie because of the respective positions of the two guards (Vinnie landed in the spot where, a little later on, Demona picks up the guard that she was going to drop out of the airship).

Graphic novels are a great way to get extra mileage out of a comic series, because most of us are going to go buy the comics, and the we're going to go buy the graphic novel. Heck, I'll probably be buying at least two copies of each issue of the comic. One to read, and one that goes immediately into a protective sleeve for safe keeping... just in case an Issue #1 of "Gargoyles" ever becomes as valuable as an Issue #1 of "Superman" or "X-men." ;)

As for the comic's cover price... like that was any surprise (see the link below).

Heh, that often becomes a dilemma for me. With titles that're promoted as limited or mini-series, I can usually wait for the collection depending on the creators involved and whether or not the material is brand new to me. When it comes to ongoing comics though, which I'm gonna bet on Gargoyles being, it becomes a little harder to wait. If I wait for the trade, then I spend less but have to wait longer to read it (and also risk accidentally seeing spoilers. Sorta the same risk as when you wait for the DVDs of a TV series instead of watching it as it airs). If I buy the monthlies and the book ends up being quality, I usually end up wanting to own the trade(s) as well. Which I guess you could solve by simply selling the individual issues on eBay or giving them away as a gift if you're feeling generous and not broke.

"what I wouldn't give to see Sam Keith do some kind of guest-cover or something for this. After seeing Maxx and then what he did with the Hulk, I think he'd produce an unbelievable image of Goliath."

If we're gonna start the artist wishlists this soon mine'll be something like 200 people long by the time this debuts (December?). Yep, Sam Kieth is awesome and would definitely be a top pick for covers (not like Slave Labor could afford him, but I don't think I'd want him for the interiors. Maybe for a dream sequence or side-story, but not for the main meat of the book). That reminds me, I still need to pick up the second volume of Zero Girl. I kinda lost track of what the guy was doing after Four Women and that Hulk/Wolverine crossover (I hate crossovers for the most part, but for his art and quirky story I felt compelled to get it).

Siren >> I've watched most of your vids but I hadn't seen "Ashitaka's Lament" and the Disney Heroes ones. Great work. Especially liked that Beauty & The Beast and Gargoyles were saved for near the end. Oh and the ones for The Last Unicorn were neat too--LEGEND music fits well with the footage you picked out, seems like a no-brainer to pair up those two films.

SIREN - Well, better Joss Whedon writing for "X-Men" than me. Trust me, you people wouldn't want me to write for "X-Men", since my bizarre sense of humor would risk producing scenes like this:

An anti-mutant mob storms the Xavier Institute with torches, determined to burn the place down. Professor Xavier wants to resolve the issue peacefully, so he comes out alone to reason with the rioters. Among other things, he comments that killing every mutant that they can find won't solve the problem, since it would still leave the very thing intact that's producing mutants in the human race: the influence of all the advanced technology and its side-effects (such as nuclear power). The rioters realize that the Professor has a point, so they call off their attack on the Institute - and instead demolish every research lab and other scientific institutions in Westchester County and the surrounding counties, shouting as they do so "Alter our gene pool, will you?" Xavier is left shaking his head sadly, saying "This is not the result that I was hoping for."

(Siren's mention of the possibility of Joss writing for "Gargoyles" reminds me of my speculation about Greg Weisman writing for the proposed "Buffy animated series" - and in the episode that he writes, having a group of living gargoyles turning up in Sunnydale.)

I'd still like confirmation from Greg Weisman himself about the comic, but it's looking more probable now, at least. Though they really ought to have done their research better, in light of the "36 episodes" remark.

Watched "Awakening Part Four" on DVD today. A few comments.

One part that still amuses me is when Hudson's watching various things on television, including the dog food commercial, and when the dog on the screen barks, Bronx growls. (I also noted that Bronx was watching from on top of a couch. As I said before, I don't know what the clan's policy is about Bronx being allowed on the furniture, but I have the suspicion that if Bronx wants up on it, who's going to dare stop him?)

We see Goliath and Elisa drawing even closer, especially when Goliath learns how Elisa was watching loyally over him in his stone sleep the whole day. And the smile that he gives her when Elisa says to him "Later tonight?"

We see Goliath's reunion with Demona, which is so moving - but sad, because she's changed so much from his "angel of the night", as he only comes to realize near the end of this episode. One great bit: Demona, in her lie about what happened to her after the Massacre, says that she "lost [her] way". She's speaking more truthfully there than she knows.

Other fun moments: Brooklyn hailing the taxi, Xanatos looking out the window as the gargoyles glide off on their missions, Bruno's "Uh-oh" when he realizes that Elisa's decoyed him with her jacket, Bronx's response to receiving his name.

Does anybody besides me think that the Cyberbiotics airship (especially in that scene where they're scrolling across its logo) looks almost like something out of "Batman: TAS"?

One of the particularly interesting revelations from the Commentary on the DVD is the thematic significance of the Alice in Wonderland statues that Elisa runs past while pursued by Xanatos's commandos; Greg (or maybe Frank Paur) mentioned that the Alice statues represented Elisa's entering her own world of strangeness now, just like Alice going down the rabbit hole. (The timing of this remark is particularly amusing, since another of the Disney comics that Slave Labor's supposed to be coming out with is a spin-off of "Alice in Wonderland".)

Vinnie makes his second appearance as a Cyberbiotics guard - and looking as clueless as ever. This time around, I noted beyond a doubt that Vinnie's the one whom Demona's threatening to drop out of the airship (as opposed to the other guard). At least he managed to come to and escape before the thing blew up in Part Five.

There is ALWAYS the possibility the screw it up. Always the possibility. But there is also the possibilty they get it RIGHT. Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, now does an X-Men comic. You want to talk sensative people, X-Men fans get really twitchy when someone new jumps on board. Just about everything Joss touched turned to gold, so many had faith in him and his X-Men comic is doing fantastic. This from a man who likely read X-Men, but had never officially wrote for it. So there is ALWAYS the possibilty Slave Labor gets good writers and artists. Any writer, before they put the first word on the page will watch the series. Hopefully both 2 seasons (let's hope TGC doesn't influence them ;)
But I am sure they can write it well. May not be AS good as the show, but I have faith it will be good. And I plan to buy it religiously. In this way, the money gets back to Disney and hopefully it is a big success and Disney truely considers releasing new seasons and maybe even a live action movie. As fans, we should still support it and have faith in it. Because if we lose faith in Gargoyles, then WE will be the ones killing it. Not Disney.

$3.50 is standard fare for a book these days. That's what I pay for Liberty Meadows (whenever fricken monkey boy puts one out), Shanna (Cho's side project), all the Thundercats mini-series that came out of WildStorm, and whatever ufcked up Sam Keith series is around.

I don't do comic books much, so I dunno if I'm paying more than usual or what. I'm guessing a lot of the mainstream stuff (X-Men, Spiderman, etc) would be cheaper since they probably print a large volume, whereas something like this is going to probably have a much smaller print run.

The fact that they will be collected into graphic novels later on is VERY cool. I dig the trades.

As an aside, HOLY SHIAT, what I wouldn't give to see Sam Keith do some kind of guest-cover or something for this. After seeing Maxx and then what he did with the Hulk, I think he'd produce an unbelievable image of Goliath.

So I guess I need to create "TV" and "Comics" subsites on here, huh?

On the subject of the comic: I'm a writer, and I like adjectives. However, I find myself suddenly bereft of them -- adequate ones, at least.

New material from the Boss himself, if that's what this means, is the biggest news we could possibly get here in our Gargoyles universe. I'm sure I'm not the only fan fic writer who's ecstatic about the prospect of seeing my stories rendered AU. ;)

Greg *IS* Gargoyles. It's *his* baby. Gargoyles: Age 10. Benny: Age 7. Erin: Age 5. Something like that.

That is all I will say.

While we're on the subject of supporting good TV shows and the like, everyone who hasn't gone out and bought the first season of "Scrubs" on DVD is a bad, bad person and their parents probably ought to love them less.

Comic news> This sounds interesting. While I've gone on record as saying that I'm kind of not all that keen on a Gargoyles revival (for me, the moment was back /then/, and while a renewal would certainly interest me, I don't ever think it will have the same weight as the original series did) I'm interested in seeing where the story goes. A "restart" from where The Journey left off? Picking up the story in 2006? Starting all over again from 1994? Or having an entirely new reset with the clan first awakening in 2006?

In other words, neat-o.

Hopefully a bi-monthly title at $3.50 a pop means that each issue will be larger than the standard 22-pager that most monthly comics are. 'Cause $3.50 US is sorta pushing it if it's the same size as comics that're regularly priced between $2.50 - $2.99. Although they could probably get me to buy the book even if it was significantly more, but if they're playing fair with their readers...

It sounds like it won't only be Greg involved in the writing. If they can get a stable of former Gargoyles writers aboard, maybe it could be a little like the TV series again, with Greg steering the ship and writing some, while the other writers are assigned their own individual issues and/or multi-issue arcs.

I guess the same questions come up that would apply to a TV series revival or animated feature. It's kind of a given that the story will have to be re-told to introduce new readers, right? If Greg does start at the fall of Wyvern again, maybe it'll be from a specific character's point of view. Or maybe we'll get "The Dark Ages" in comic book form for a while until he sees fit to have the series catch up with the cartoon. I'd kinda prefer that over starting off with a re-telling of "Awakening"--getting the prequel spin-off in at least SOME form.

Thirty-six? I guess the journalist really didn't like the World Tour. ;) Absolutely fantastic to hear this confirmed. Hopefully the fact that it's not one of the 'major' comic producers will mean that the series will be able to be a strong player in its own field through the regular 'Gargoyles' fans, with room to grow its fanbase. Can't wait to read it!

I read this:
The SLG Gargoyles comic series will feature contributions from the creators of the 36-episode Gargoyles animated series, who came to Disney with the idea of creating a Gargoyles comic book and were referred to SLG. The bi-monthly Gargoyles comic series will launch in December or January as a full color comic with a 3.50 cover price.

* * *

Interesting, but pray tell, which 36 episodes are they refering to?

For those too lazy to click, here's an excerpt from the article Toku linked:

"All the SLG Disney titles will feature ISBNs and will be collected into graphic novel compilations. SLG has plans to sell both the comics and graphic novels at Disney parks and specialty retail chains as well as via the direct market, while making the graphic novel collections available to bookstores as well."

Hopefully this want suppose to be a big surprise for the con.

I'm jazzed about this. Really jazzed.

Torvik: A sorting system on the back end needs to be implemented to give priority to certain questions. It's difficult to find free time to work on writing the code, but now that we're into summer, work lets up a bit and I'll have more free time.

In response to sonique's AG question (which I think is what prompted Torvik's post and can be accessed by clicking on my name):

Here's the deal. Greg has always said to let all the questions through that don't violate any IP issues/rules he set forth. This includes repeats, silly questions, etc... So Todd, nor I, nor anyone, will t go through and delete them as needed.

This is where the priority/queue system that I talked about comes into play. We have several queues, and push all those silly, repeat, contest-related, etc... questions into their own queues, leaving the original, new questions in yet another queue that Greg can then tap into.

As soon as I move set this new comment room system I'm working on live (this week) I'll go right to work on getting this queue system installed.

After that will be the inclusion of "helpers" who can then go in and answer repeat questions, quoting from previous responses submitted by Greg.

I'll see about getting more time off from work to work on this.

Cross reference Slave Labor Graphics with "Invader Zim" and folks might find something they are more familiar with in the mainstream. :)

"I did do some checking and Slave Labor is a real comic book company, however, I'm a big comic book geek, and up till now I never heard of them."

For shame Greg, Slave Labor produces, among other things, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Which, if this deal really is true, amuses me to no end.

The spammer can't even spell "opportunity" correctly.

One thing about "Awakening Part Three" that I forgot to mention last night was Hudson's "Must you humans name everything?" speech; that's still one of my favorite parts of "Gargoyles", something that really made it clear that this wasn't going to be just another animated series.

PATRICK - Yes, I can't help wondering that the more discerning people out in the Gargoyles Universe must have almost wished that Fox had taken that fashion model hostage *before* the Pack's television show could air its first episode. :)

<< Goliath must have seen many tapestries in his time; and most of them were intricatly woven and visually stunning. So seeing a TV must have blown his mind. >> - I'm sure Goliath was impressed by the technology, but it probably didn't take long to realize what most of us already know: most of the stuff ON television is neither "intricatly woven" or "visually stunning." Just look at the first show that the trio fell in love with. The Pack. That's some first class entertainment there. :P

Todd> Only two Disney animation studios ever did Gargoyle episodes, Japan TV Animation did first, some second season and "the" last episode of third season. TV Animation Australia did only one episode and that was the second to last episode of third season.

Disney Toon Studio can get any animation studio out there to do the show as long they can animate (or try to) the Gargoyles style.

Goliath's view of NY> I LOVED those lines. "Towers of Glass and Iron, stone streets finer than Romans built."

Goliath is comparing NY to the only thing she knew, and that was Rome. Being educated, he knew that Rome was one of the biggest centers of culture in Europe. As Todd mentioned, the "living tapestry" remark... that was a great one, too. Goliath must have seen many tapestries in his time; and most of them were intricatly woven and visually stunning. So seeing a TV must have blown his mind.

That is all I will say.

Curious.
Greg recently said that nothing will change to 'Ask Greg' until Gore is ready to make it happen.
I totally respect Gore's rights to do what he wants, whenever he jolly well wants to. Still, I'm curious to know how he feels about implementing some of the changes suggested. Anyone know?

Although the rumor still hasn't been confirmed or denied as yet, I do think that the idea of reviving "Gargoyles" in the format of a comic book written by Greg is a good one - better, in fact, than seeking to revive it as an animated series again. As I've mentioned before, two serious obstacles to putting "Gargoyles" back on television again were that the Disney Afternoon no longer exists (and I don't think that "Gargoyles" would work as a Saturday morning program on ABC Kids) and that Disney's shut down a lot of the animation studios that it used to make "Gargoyles". A comic book wouldn't face either problem, naturally. (I wonder if the comic book would also have more leeway for the sort of stories that "Gargoyles" told in its first two seasons than television nowadays, with the tighter S&P regulations.)

I watched "Awakening Part Three" on my Gargoyles DVD today. One thing that I'm still blown away by is that, on the DVD, the picture has much more detail than on my old videotapes. I was able to spot things about the castle that I hadn't seen on the videotape pictures: old weapons and shields hanging on the walls, a tapestry here and there, even a stag's head over one of the doorways. One more reason to give thanks for the DVD - and to eagerly look forward to the Season Two DVD when it comes out.

The trio's misadventures in the kitchen strike me as definitely very appropriate for the original concept of "Gargoyles" as a comedy. At times, Lex, Brooklyn, and Broadway feel almost like the Three Stooges with wings - and this was one of those times. ("Turf" was another.) I hope that trio fans don't get too upset about my saying this, of course.

One thing that does seem a little strange to me at the beginning of Act II; when Goliath is rescuing Elisa after she falls off the top of the castle, it appears that he lands with her on the building across the street from the Eyrie Building - yet when he climbs up the building that they're on, it appears to now be the Eyrie Building that he's climbing. Maybe I just misread the scene. (Incidentally - and I know that this has been said before - I can't help wondering about whether the city must have to be doing a lot of work filling up the holes that the gargoyles are gouging in the sides of all those buildings whenever they climb up and down them.)

One especially great moment in this episode (which somebody was bringing up only a few days ago): when Goliath's holding Elisa in his arms just before they prepare to go on their tour of the city, they exchange a smile, and then notice Hudson standing there.

We get our introduction to the infamous yuppie couple and Vinnie, of course. (Did anybody expect to see anything more of Brendan and Margot, or the guy on the motorcycle? I certainly didn't.) And even the three street thugs (who'd show up again in "Avalon" and "Hunter's Moon").

Another of my still-favorite elements of this episode is Goliath's coming to grips still with the modern world - especially when he calls Xanatos's monitor screen "a living tapestry" and when Xanatos has to explain the stolen computer disks in terms of magical talismans. And when Goliath, looking over New York and talking about it with Elisa comments on how the city streets are even better than the old Roman roads. (I still wonder how much Goliath could have known about those roads, mind you, since the Romans never succeeded in conquering Scotland. Most likely he read about them - or heard about them - back in the 10th century. Or just maybe he had once seen one on a visit to northern England, though I doubt that Goliath had done any major travelling prior to the Wyvern Massacre - he struck me as a "stay-at-home-to-protect-it" kind of guy.)

And then we follow it up with Goliath asking Elisa why New York doesn't have any city walls to protect it - and understands when Elisa explains that most of their problems are already inside the city.

For that matter, there's a nice parallel to Part One in this same episode - again, somebody is urging Goliath to take his clan on a special mission outside the castle, Goliath is reluctant to do so, and that somebody has ulterior motives that he's not revealing to Goliath. As Griff put it many episodes later, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

People may already know this, but thought I'd mention it just in case and also to try and get some sort of verification :-) . It was announced at:

http://www.comicon.com/thebeat/archives/2005/06/bea_day_1.html

That a new publisher has made a deal with Disney and will be making a comic based on Gargoyles, written by Greg W. If it's true, then it's exciting news! :-)
