WONKA> Gene Wilder was A LOT better, in my opinion, and funnier. I like the songs better, too.
Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

Happy New Year to all! Best wishes going into 2006.

Did indeed see the "City of Stone" commentary last night. Very good overall. Thought the wrong Demona model issue was a tad overemphasized, this couldn't be helped because of the conversation between the three of them. And to be honest, I wrote most of them off as a overstressed Demona, I never really noticed until they brought it up. And I'm usually REALLY picky about continuity, as it is part of my job when I work on shows. And I did learn some new things as well.

Overall, it made a great way to build up to ringing in 2006. May more great things come from GARGOYLES.

May better days lie ahead...

Patrick - Having seen both "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" and "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory", I prefer the latter, not just because of the superb visual effects, I like the storyline a lot better.

Unsure if this was already announced, but I have some great news!!!

Marina Sirtis will be a guest at Mega Con in Orlando, Florida from Feb 24th-26th! :D :D :D

I am going to meet Demona!! :D

Happy New Year to everyone! Here's hoping 2006 is a better year than the one before.

I have a request though... does anyone have, or know where I can find, a screen cap/grab of Elisa looking into Titania's Mirror at the museum from "The Mirror"? Preferably including the frame where she turns around but her reflection remains unchanged, but any one in that general sequence will do.

Happy New Year!

I stayed up way too late last night, but I crawled out of bed to upload updates for the Gathering 2006 web site. Our discussion forum is now open to post your questions, look for roommates, and talk about convention. We're also having a little contest to find a name for our mascot, and the registration information has been updated to reflect the new tier of pricing that will be in effect through March 31st.

Let's make 2006 the Year of the Gargoyle. :)

173 days left until The Gathering 2006 in Los Angeles, California!

Happy New Year, everyone!

It's been a fine 2005, with the second Gargoyles DVD coming out. Let's hope that 2006 continues the trend, with the Gargoyles comic on the way, and that the final Gargoyles DVD ("Monsters" to "Hunter's Moon") comes out.

Also, AMGC updated, so go check out the new topic, and don't forget to vote for December's contest.

Jade Griffin: I was watching the sales rank that day, and the highest I saw was 224, I think. It dropped to the 1,000's about two weeks later, but it peaked at the 400's earlier this week. Our numbers weren't so great on Amazon.com, but I know we did GREAT on Amazon.ca!

I hope I've answered your question! :P

Um...I posted this once before and didn't see a reply. Does someone recall what the highest popularity the season 2 got from Amazon.com? I mean their rank system. I saw it somewhere around 248 on the first day. Any smaller numbers?

I was meaning I agreed with A Lex's logic, not Greg B's. Forgot to start the below post to make it clear I was addresing A Lex, and jumped straight into my thoughts. (It's been a crazy week)
Shannon "Shan" Muir - [shanemuir@aol.com]
Shannon "Shan" Muir

Have to agree with Greg B here. There's no economic sense in releasing "Hunter's Moon" alone for a 10 year old show, as much as I agree with a lot of your logic.

From the quoted statement, it sounds like Greg hoped to originally end at "Avalon" which didn't happen, they went three episodes over that ("Shadows of the Past," "Heritage," and "Kingdom"). That leaves the remaining 26.

Since my last post I've also seen "Leader of the Pack," "Eye of the Beholder," and "High Noon." With a high likelihood of rain over New Years Eve, the game plan is to watch "City of Stone" commentary tommorow night.

Shannon "Shan" Muir - [shanemuir@aol.com]

A Lex > I doubt HM is going to be released by itself.
Greg Bishansky - [<----- Gathering 2006]
"A haiku is kind of like a regular poem, except it doesn't rhyme, and it's completely stupid." - Mr. Garrison

DVD Commentary: thats why I sugested podcasting, for all episodes that do not have commentary Greg could record his commentary as wav file on computer(all he would need is a crappy mic), then we could download it and play it on our computer while watching the dvd
Not that Disney will do this, but I remember Greg saying he would like to see season 2 split into 3 releases. A 23 ep set, a 26 ep set and Hunter's Moon as a stand alone release. At first I thought this would suck, because it would mean an overall greater cost but when I think about it, it could be good for sales in general. I mean, if HM was released by itself, by the time it was released, the first comic of the new story should be out and they could include a free copy of the 1st comic with the HM dvd(and then HM would defenitly have commentary). Giving the comic, potentially, a greater audience. My reasoning being that SOME people don't want to watch the whole series(I know, how could anyone not want to watch the whole thing?) They may see a Gargoyles dvd and think "I remember that show, I wouldn't mind getting a few episodes" but when they see their options are 13 eps, 26 eps or 26 eps, they may be discouraged. So for these people, a 3 episode story line that they can watch in an hour (and would be cheaper than a season of episodes) would be a good choice. Then if they liked it, they could buy the other dvd's and/or the comic. It is these fringe customers, I think, that will determine wether the show comes back in animation form.
PS- now what hapens in a perfect world if we do get the cartoon back, then the question becomes "where will Greg pick up from; HM or where ever the comic is at?" just a thought

A Lex

Battle Beast> I still don't understand all of it. But apparently the decision was made by the rights holders not to renew the contract. It's stunned a lot of people. The "whys" are not clear, except for the fact it seems that Sony Wonder has acquired the old Sunbow catalog and they have their own distribution system. However, Sony Wonder is best known as a preschool brand, so it doesn't make sense (as they are currently known, anyway) for them to market non-preschool fare. I wish I had a clearer picture to share with you.
Shannon "Shan" Muir - [shanemuir@aol.com]
Shannon "Shan" Muir

SHAN> WHAT WHAT WHAT??? HOW DID THEY LOODE ALL RIGHTS??? This is interesting...
Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

Greg B> about getting another DVD: at least in this case Disney is both show producer and DVD distributor (through Buena Vista, anyway). JEM, for example, made it this far but then Rhino lost the rights to ALL of the Sunbow material (including TRANSFORMERS and GI JOE) so either someone else has to issue the last discs separately or start over from scratch. Which kind of sucks not only for completion but because Greg's episode (with Cary Bates), "Video Wars," is part of the last set.

So with Disney, it probably truly does boil simply down to did they move enough units to justify the dollars to create the last set, even if it is a smaller run than they did previously? Sales are tracked by quarters, usually a quarter in arrears, so your February estimation for releasing 2005 Quarter 4 numbers sounds about right.

Shannon "Shan" Muir - [shanemuir@aol.com]
Shannon "Shan" Muir

I know that if thats all were getting we'd *ALL* settle for just HM 1-3. But we can hope, cant we? I'd love to hear Greg's tase in Future Tense. It's jsut a cool episode.
Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

DPH> Yes, it's too soon. Last year Disney didn't go over the numbers till February.

Be patient, I'm sure we'll be getting another DVD.

Is it too soon to find out if the sales of Gargoyles Season 2 Volume 1 were high enough to warrant a release of Season 2 Volume 2?

Battle Beast - I'd settle for commentary on The Gathering and Hunter's Moon. If I had to choose between having one of those two, I'd have to stick with Hunter's Moon.

Don't forget, the deadline to submit to December's AMGC also runs out at midnight tomorrow, as 2005 gives way to 2006.

So if you've been sitting on an entry, or were worried that the deadline was tonight and you couldn't finish in time, remember, you've still got time.

We've already got a number of great guests lined up, and more will be added in the coming weeks. We're also putting the final touches on a forum where attendees can look for roommates and post questions to the staff. And don't forget that the t-shirt contest deadline is only a month away!

DVD Review Update as Promised>I've watched a lot of the DVD over the past few days. Not all of it, specifically not "City of Stone," as I've promised the gift-giver (aka my boyfriend Kevin) that I would watch it with him. Specifically, I've watched "Lighthouse at the Sea of Time" (which always has me in tears by the end), "The Mirror," "Vows" (which was the first time I've seen that ending, and it is clearly clearly NOT RIGHT), "The Price," and "Avalon." I've also seen "Gathering of the Cast and Crew" and all the Introductions.

Let's start on the last item first, the Introductions. Generally I think they work, especially as someone who didn't watch the series years ago and only caught up more recently on the Toon Disney airings. For people newer to the show, I think they help you feel "caught up" or refresh your memory if you haven't seen them all in order. I also like the fact you can select them in isolation without watching the episode, in case you didn't choose it initially but then want to back up and find out what he said after viewing. But... I'm sorry, but I find it hilarious you can watch just all the Introductions back to back (and I have given this a try). I mean, I like and respect Greg and all, but I don't see a point! The boyfriend had an awful lot of fun with this, making a joke along the lines not to watch it too much and get obsessed with him. (Side note: I first met Greg five years ago when he was my teacher. And I know this was funnier to hear in person than in print, but I couldn't let it pass without comment.)

As to the "Gathering of the Cast and Crew," I think it was well edited though at times the backgrounds were hard on the eyes. This may just be a personal thing. The footage clips intercut throughout from the series fit incredibly and it really feels like they took the time to find the best bits. It drove me nuts at first that Greg was the only person facing screen right when everyone else faces screen left, but after multiple views I understood why. It's because Greg gets the majority of screen time and they wanted to create a balance between how often a person was on one side of the screen over the other. Greg's on screen percentage set it up that he logically should be the only one on his side. Had it been able to be more balanced, Michael Reaves and Frank Paur could have been on the same side as Greg, and the voice actors all facing the other way (sorry this is my Radio-TV degree training kicking in). My favorite part is Frank Paur's ending on the whole thing about optimism. He said exactly why I think the show resonates with me, it's a lot like the way I try to look at life. The most thought provoking line is Michael Reaves when he talks about most animation being people "just whacking each other on the head" and - all due respect to Mr. Reaves - every time my gut reaction is to yell at the screen "then why don't you change it?" (Side note: it just makes me more aware of why I stay in this business and where my heart is).

Overall, I am pleased with the sound quality and visual quality of the episodes compared to how I saw them aired on TOON DISNEY, with the obvious exception of VOWS. Mistakes happen, I know, but the wrong ending making the DVD submarines a powerful story, in my not so humble opinion. I say that as a writer even more than just a fan of the show. I'm looking forward to getting to "City of Stone" hopefully in the next couple weeks to see how the commentary is.

DVD 3> More commentaries. HM 1-3, Gathering 1-2, Future Tense. That's six right there, (They had five on the first one) so maybe they could beg and plead a little for one more.

And of course, more intro ductions. Those were cool!

A Lex - You could use a file sharing site such as www.megaupload.com or www.yousendit.com.
You upload a file to their servers and they will give you a link at which others can download it.
YSI holds a file for 7 days/20 downloads, while Megaupload holds the file until it hasn't been downloaded for 30 days, with unlimited downloads available. Megauplaod is picky about file names though - if you have symbols such as & - and the like in the name it screws up the download, so you may have to rename the file if you use that site.

Anything I would like to see on the next DVD?

An audio commentary on "Hunter's Moon". But if we could have commentary on two more episodes, I'd pick "The Reckoning" and "Future Tense".

I also think another feature would be awesome. With the Gathering returning to Los Angeles, and so many of the cast and crew attending, it would be great to have another Gathering documentary, sort of a combination of the Gathering feature and the Cast and Crew feature.

PATRICK - Yes, he's seen them outside, but inside, with a lot of objects laden on their boughs that you don't normally see on pine trees outside, would be an entirely different matter to him. (Not to mention that they didn't have Christmas trees in Scotland in the 10th century; it was a German custom that only reached the British Isles during the Hanoverian period - 1714-1837 - and didn't even become popular until shortly after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert got married.)

Let's just be grateful that they never did a scene where the Mutates felt a strange urge to climb up a Christmas tree and start knocking the ornaments off....

Todd > I'm sure Bronx has seen a pine tree before.

Lex > The DVDs get as many bonus features and commentary tracks as Disney is willing to pay for. Had we only gotten the episodes on DVD with nothing else included, many of us would have been happy. For the extra Disney invested, I think we got quite a bit. Even if everyone involved in the commentary tracks and cast reunions donates their time (some were not willing to do so - you can figure out who easily enough), it's still a significant undertaking to bring everyone into a studio, record footage, and edit it together.

Disney Parks > There was a two-hour episode of "Modern Marvels" on the Discovery channel just this past weekend all about the Disney parks. Anyone interested might be able to catch a repeat of it if they have cable.

Just for the fun of it, how do you suppose Bronx would respond towards a Christmas tree? I recall reading a fanfic once (one of Dylan Blacquiere/Whitborne's, I recall) that had Bronx, when he first sees one, begin barking at it and then finally start ripping it to shreds - with the result that he's thereafter banished from the room where it's kept. (At least he didn't lift his hind leg next to it.)
Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

hi all, I'm an Aussie Garg fan and I waited a year to see if the season 1 dvd would be released here, it wasn't, so I bought season 1 and 2 from the US.
I think they did a good job, except for the annoying ads that play as soon as the disc goes in(is that standard for US dvd's?)
Disclaimer: my next point is really nitpicky
I don't know if anyone's pointed this out already, but despite the season 1 dvd being tauted as uncut, it is actually slightly cut. It is still "as aired on tv", its just that the tv version also had this part cut out. So where did I see this "part"? On the Gargoyels The Movie VHS, thats where. Although the VHS version is severely edited, with whole plot elements removed, when I first watched it (years ago) I noticed an extra bit that wasn't in the tv version.
Now, I'm talking about literally 3 or 4 frames worth of animation, but its a good 3 or 4 frames!
It is in Awakening 3 when Goliath confronts the 3 thugs in the alleyway. In the dvd and on tv(Aussie tv), Goliath throws the bald thug into a bin, then grabs the guy with the blue shirt's head and then this guy just hits the floor.
In the VHS, after Goliath grabs the guy with the blue shirt's head we see that he has the third thug's head in his other hand and then he knocks their heads together and THEN the guy hits the floor. Like I said, its not much, but its cool to see Goliath get hands on so I wish they put it in the dvd release.
I captued it from my tape but I don't know how to put files on the net, so if anyone does know, I can email the file to them and they can put it on.

Also, I thought of a way that we can have commentary on every episode of the dvd's. Have you heard of podcasting, for anyone that doesn't know, its just another word for internet radio. People record a sound file of thier "podcast" and then put it on iTunes or bittorrent for others to download.
Greg could record his own podcasts for every episode. He could sit down and watch an episode and record his commentary, at the start of each episode he could say "play now" or something to cue us to start an episode. If he used a voip(internet telephony) programe like Gizmo, he could arrange to call others (Keith David etc.)and have them give comments also. Gizmo even has a record option to record all people in the conversation.
Even if he did do this, the sound quality wouldn't be as good as a dvd commentary, but I still think its worth a try, what do you guys think?

A Lex

Battle Beast> What kind of info exactly? It sounds like you're looking more reviews than just tourism focused sites

Besides the ones you mentioned, sites I can think of that fill that role to some degree include sites like themeparksinsider.com (internet reviews of various parks including the Disney ones), www.mouseplanet.com, www.yesterland.com (specifically on discontinued attractions), and www.laughingplace.com.

If I can get a better sense of what you specifically need I'll see what further help I can be. My last class for my Masters degree that I took a year ago was "Deconstrucing Disney," where we looked at the Disney corporation from a variety of angles and viewpoints. It was interesting to be doing it at the time when Eisner finally made the annoucement he was stepping down. We couldn't have timed it better.

Anyway, I can check my old materials from class if I know what to look for to see if my classmates might have found any interesting resources during our projects. Several did the parks. I looked specifically at the World War II educational and propaganda shorts.

Patrick: Very nice signature. For some reason, it reminds me of an episode of "Mr. Show" where we learn that Santa Claus exists because several centuries ago, some criminal put a gun to an old man's head, forced him to put on a red suit, make toys for all the children of the world, and then deliver them in a sleigh with flying reindeer every December 24th. Particularly amusing was when the guy comes out of Santa's closet, brandishes the gun, and says, "Now you go right ahead and keep being Santa, see? And don't you die!" I don't know why I'm reminded of this. Anyway, it was good. Hope your's was good, as well.

I went to both Best Buy and Border's today, hoping to use one of the gift cards I got for Christmas. But neither store had the two-disc DVD of "Batman Begins." So I'll have to see what else is on my list.

I got the DVD on release day, but boy did I give it for the holidays! Two of my high school friends recieved it as a gift from me, one of whom was watching it during the original run on TV. We'd discuss the new episode at school the next morning. And I got it, plus season one, for my sister's boyfriend. He likes the show and was supposed to get a copy of season one for them, but he somehow forgot. And since my sister was my "Gargoyles" watching buddy when the show was first on, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

Just passing through to report there is one more happy GARGOYLES DVD owner in the world :) I did indeed get one for Christmas... though this was almost guaranteed as my main gift giver knows how much I like GARGOYLES, I learn to not count on anything and struggle to be content with what I have.

As I have all next week off I will get to spend more time and detail with the DVD.

Hope those who celebrate Christmas had a blessed one.

And I may even be first this week...
