I should probably introduce myself as well...

i am Tim
Ive been watching the Gargoyles since they first aired and have always enjoyed the stories, characters and animation. I am not much for comics so i am in the dark about the new comic string.

U can find me on MSN or AIM most of the time and i check my email at least once daily.

As far as Disney is concerned, As an employee I have had many experiences with the organization. If anything, i find that their biggest fault is that they often end things to soon and more recently, have been straying from the Movie formula that made them into geniuses. The art of hand animation coupled with hand backgrounds all put together via computer with an enthralling script and Music used as an intergral plot element performed by the characters themselves was genius and i wish they would return to that formula.

Feel free to drop me a line or ask me any questions. I wont be in here everyday but i will stop by probably weekly or so. so hit me up.

Aim- Force10seal

WB Makhasu.

I for one am looking forward to discussing the Gargoyles comics here.

How are we going to do that, BTW? Are we going to wait until Thursdays to discuss the new issues? New comics come out on Wednesdays, usually, but my shop doesn't have them in until Thursdays. I can never discuss Transformers comics on the net, because on Wednesdays I can't go there for fear of spoilers and by Thursday evening when I actually have the comics, no one is interested in talking about them any more.

Stormy

Hey, all...

Just popping in to introduce myself. I was a Gargoyles fan years ago, but my love for it was rekindled by the release of the DVDs last year. I'm a Mac 'n D fan in particular, and am working on creating what's probably the only new Gargoyles site in the last three years (depressing, ain't it?). I create music videos, fanart (one of which was accepted into The Grimorum Anthology), fanfics, etc...

I was pretty shocked to see how empty the CRs here and at TGS have become since I last treaded their paths. Hopefully, with the release of the comics, there'll be some new fans to breathe life into the online fandom.

BTW, is there any way to get a personal avatar added to the list? I make fairly professional avatars, and would like to be able to use a customized one. I could even make a couple dozen for other people to use as well in exchange.

Later.

David Hedgecock, the artist for the new Gargoyles comic book from SLG, has been very cool and passed along some avatars to add to the comment room. You'll find them at the end of the avatar drop-down menu with the prefix "SLG".

You see the Hudson avatar attached here, there is also a Demona and Goliath avatar as well. Very cool.

I've finally taken care of getting my plane tickets and reserving a room for the Gathering. Full speed ahead and almost a month away. The list of guests at this year's con is unbelievable and I'm really looking forward to attending.

And to the TGS folks, apologies for being slow on getting some updates to the TGS CR. I did get the goods via e-mail, it will be going up asap, probably tomorrow afternoon once I'm back from treating mom to lunch.

Gorebash - [gorebash@s8.org]

I just realized that when I made my little quip last week about my interpretation to Greg's rambling, I forgot that Patrick was already fond of saying the same thing about "To Serve Mankind." Sorry about that.

Reno: They edit out the gorgeous shot of Elisa bleeding on her kitchen floor, but yeah, they've been showing it. Thank heaven the DVDs are uncut. There are a few more things I noticed that I think were edited out of the Toon Disney airings. When I watched "Shadows of the Past" on my DVD, I had forgotten about Goliath seeing the picture of himself smashing the statues of his clan. I don't think that on the T-D airing, we got to see what he saw. One of the many reasons I'm hoping we see Volume 2 (again, Johnny, keyword there is "hoping"). I miss Fang's "kinky!" remark in "The Reckoning."

Well, I just got some good news. In a sense. I knew that if we kept bitching, Lucasfilm would do something to shut us up. On the one hand, I hate giving George Lucas my money, but on the other hand, my Widescreen VHS tapes are going to fall apart someday. Nature of the beast, then.

Realize that Australia was responsible for some Aladdin episodes and the Direct to Videos (as well as other cartoons) so because of this, "Seeing..." was very cartoony in style, but I loved the animation regardless due to some really nice touches they did. Also, the two studios that did the bulk of TGC never animated a Disney show before let alone Gargoyles and they had a short amount of time to turn them around. Lastly, the last episode will never be fixed even though major retakes were done. I get a big kick out seeing the two cops escort myself (Castaway) into the helicopter spot light only to disappear. I actually thought the plot of "Seeing isn't Believing" was okay. If only the animation wasn't so awful. And yes, "To Serve Mankind" was the episode that introduced he-who-must-not-be-named.

Now, for the big news: I'm now officially going to The Gathering! Weeeeeeeee! I'm still not entirely sure how I'm going to afford it, but I've got the registration, the plane tickets, and the hotel reservations, so I can't back out now. Yahoo!

Guandalug> At least he had fun with it! Now I can ease up a little on it -- it's not like he had multiple episodes animating Elisa. It's been so long since I've seen that episode, I can't even remember if there was anything good about it other than Proteus again. And, what happened in "To Serve Mankind?" Is that the one with E-- P--?

Notwithstanding Jasminelisa and the contorted look goliath made when Proteus/Elisa was acting slinky towards him in the ep. I did like the flowing animation in the episode copaired to the the rest of the rushed animation Nelvana had given us in the previous 11 episodes. Just remembering the flowing movement of the piece of paper Elisa picked up off of her car seat - I thought overall it was pretty cool. Sure the characters were off model, but it was still interesting to see. And then there was the Elisa/Goliath Hug ^_^

Jasminelisa was only the most glaring example of the complete inconsistency of the animation in TGC from one episode to the next. I had issues with that CGI intro they added, too. It totally did not mesh with the style of the show.

Chameleongirl > For Gathering 2001, the total attendance recorded was 375, including guests, give or take a few. I'd have to do some digging to come up with numbers for the other conventions.

Harvester: Heh heh, I never made a list of the animation errors in TGC, but I have them all in my head. Most of them were corrected for later viewings, but the retakes don't air on Toon Disney, and, for some reason, Angels in the Night doesn't have any retakes. That's too bad; I was hoping they'd make that reporter's head stay on and Goliath's talon turn to stone with him...

Jasminelisa: hah, I've read that little snippet by the animator before. We can't really blame the animators as it seems they didn't have much time to take reference from the show-especially from "Seeing isn't Believing"

I think that ep is animated very well aside from the fact that the characters are off.

It has been said that the world is a strange place. This is not true. The world is a VERY strange place.

I think DTaina's got a list of animation slip-ups perpetrated by the Goliath Chronicles. True, the first 65 episodes were not without their faux pas, but at least they still looked good. Did anyone else think the "stone" gargoyles in the Goliath Chronicles looked ridiculous? If she wants to point any more things out, I'll let her. She knows those episodes better than me. Speaking of which, if your tooth still aches, Taina, why not watch "To Serve Mankind" or "A Bronx Tail"? That'll take your mind off the pain. I hear the CIA uses them during training, to help their operatives build up a resistance to torture.

Warcrafter: Can't say I'm familiar with the game, but I hope for your sake that they do it justice. Generally, movies based on video games only have the potential to be good for the people who like the game. I myself loved "Silent Hill," but anyone who had never played the game would have been scratching their heads (and possibly vomiting towards the end, when the gore got really disturbing; I myself wasn't bothered, simply because graphic and disturbing imagery is a part of the "Silent Hill" series, and so would have been disappointed had it been toned down). Do you know who'll be directing "Warcraft"?

Reno: In the end, both endings suck, but the ending we saw was still much better than the ending they would have done, had Greg not headed them off at the pass.

"Backorder" may just indicate that there's no stock available - in this case because the comic has not yet been released. It probably has not gone to print yet. They won't print it until they're ready to ship it. Stockpiling stuff in a warehouse for weeks on end costs money.

I finally got over to the local comic store to order a few copies of the Gargoyles comic. While there, I learned that Slave Labor Graphics is listed in the preview catalogues under the name "Amaze Ink." (I was getting concerned when the dealer kept looking for Slave Labor/SLG under "S" and coming up empty.) So, in the event anyone's retailer is having trouble finding the listing for the Gargs comic, that's where to look. The catalogue also confirmed the release date as June 28 (I saw it printed on the page myself, in black and white).

Now, here's what I think is the best part. When the dealer entered the ordering information into the computer, the message came up, "Backorder Only." The first print run has sold out! I don't care if I have to wait forever and a day for my copies; I was thrilled to hear that news.

GREGARIUS - Sorry about giving the wrong impression about "All You Zombies"; I should have proofread last evening's post a little more carefully to make it clear that it was a short story by Heinlein, rather than inaccurately suggesting that it was a novel.

"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

And Reno: I'm not so sure about the out-acting Sevarius thing. Sevarius's bitching and moaning seemed out-of-place. It's not like he was Thailog's slave or anything. As we saw in "The Reckoning," he was being paid pretty damn good. Which made Sevarius's desire to kill him seem more like a case of Saturday-morning-villain-itis.

Ahhhh, "Go, Dog, Go." The gripping tale of the immortal struggle between canines, automobiles, and finding just the right party hat.

I recently did a search on Robert Heinlein (the link contains a bibliography). Are there any more stories off the list that anyone more familiar with him might recommend? I don't know when I'll get around to purchasing some. After I finish "The Game Players of Titan," I'm taking a break from Philip K. IT'S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, I'm finally finished writing my summary of The Green for the gfw. All I have to do is type it and email it. Hopefully I can finish that by the end of this week.

Guandalug la'Fay - I sent an email last week about another possible addition to the gfw by me. I would like to receive a reply. If you lost that email, I still have a reply.

h.o.e. - <Guandalug: Speaking of synopses, did you get my e-mail a few weeks ago?> Just out of curiosity, was that a reference to you sending the synopsis for "Ill Met by Moonlight" to Guandalug? I'm just curious because that will leave it down to Renee, Bard, and Demona Taina to finish their stuff for the gfw for things to be completed.

Whatever happenned to simplicity? Looking for a roommate for the gathering.

Asatira - Gatlinburg is just up the road from Pigeon Forge, so depending on which side you're coming from, it's either just a little more time or a little less time from that. Give or take about 15 minutes between the two. So yeah. Just a liiittle bit of a difference.

Crzy, Kyt, & Chameleongirl (And everyone else giving congrats, while I'm at it..)- Thanky! :)

Y2Hecate - [y2hecate@gmail.com]
Shh. You can't see me.

Todd> I am familiar with the first two, if not read them. I started "Le Morte" but couldn't finish it. To be honest, I barely started it. It's what a friend calls a book to own in order to finish type of book. I have read White's series, but I can't recall "The Book of Merlyn." I do know I loved the first two at least. Read "The Crystal Cave," but none of the others, and I'm told they aren't quite as good as the first. "Wicked day" sounds interesting. Saving the list.
Asatira

ASATIRA - Well, I remember the Arthurian books that Greg Weisman's listed as having read (I know that he had a similar list of detective books, but I can't remember its contents at the moment, other than that I'm certain that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was on it). That would be:

Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain" (the earliest extant start-to-finish account of Arthur's story, though missing many familiar elements; Merlin drops out of the story just before Arthur's birth, there's no Sword in the Stone, no Lancelot, no mention of the Round Table, the Quest of the Holy Grail, or Camelot, etc.)

Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur (the traditional big Arthurian work, though Greg's admitted to not being that fond of it).

T. H. White (his works being "The Sword in the Stone", "The Once and Future King", and "The Book of Merlyn" - Greg especially likes the scene with Arthur and the hedgehog in the last one).

Mary Stewart (author of the Merlin Trilogy, "The Crystal Cave", "The Hollow Hills", and "The Last Enchantment" - plus a sequel to it, "The Wicked Day", which does for Mordred almost what "City of Stone" did for Macbeth).

John Steinbeck's "The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights" (an unfinished retelling of Malory which gradually becomes more detailed; if you read nothing else in it, read Steinbeck's letters to a couple of his friends about the Arthurian legend and Malory - they're a true delight).

Roger Lancelyn Green's "King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table" (a retelling for young readers, which Greg has made one of his primary sources for the Gargoyles Universe take on King Arthur; it's the source, in particular, for his take on Percival and Blanchefleur).

Thomas Berger's "Arthur Rex" (a rather interesting Arthurian novel, covering his story start-to-finish - but be warned, that it's very adult - "adult" as in "Christine Morgan fanfiction").

Norma Lorre Goodrich (a non-fiction writer on King Arthur, who attempts - not especially convincingly, IMO - to locate the entire story in southern Scotland - which, admittedly, might be appropriate from a "Gargoyles" perspective).

Other books that I remember Greg Weisman having read are several by Robert Heinlein (including "All You Zombies" - a true timeloop case), some by William Faulkner (whose Yoknapatawpha County was an influence for the "universe of characters" tone of "Gargoyles), "The Hobbit", "Go! Dog! Go!" (a book for beginning readers), Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia", books on Greek and Norse mythology by the d'Aulaires, and, of course, William Shakespeare.

Waking up covered with Pigeon dropping stains every night...lovely. Probably why gargoyles roost so high up away from the range at which pigeons can go.

"Don't hate me because I'm devious," Demona cues as she strikes an enticing pose for her adoring fans!

Well, I need to check, but I doubt it's more of a drive from where I live than Gatlinburg or Nashville. So, I'll most likely make it (I don't know what my plans will be in a year, so I may or may not be in the area at that time). Still, it should be fun.

Off topic: can anyone point to me a list (I think there were more than one) of books that Greg was influenced by? I was just thinking about how I enjoyed the books in our short lived book club, and I'd like to read some more. I know they're somewhere in the "Inspirations" archive, but there are a lot of inspirations to go through and "book club" brought up nada.

Asatira

I wonder, Do pidgeon droppings stain Gargoyle's stone skin?
Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

I think there are things to do in pretty much any place--the change is going to be the nature of the attractions. If NYC has famous landmarks and Vegas has casinos, Pigeon Forge might well have nature trails or some such.

The point of the Gathering is 1. to get together for the Con thing and 2. to visit a place you might otherwise never have gone to see.

Stormy

Pigeons in the Forge! - For the record, I don't think there are many (if any) pigeons in Pigeon Forge. They released a bunch of hawks and falcolns, because the pigeons were destroying stuff. Originally the town was named for the Little Pigeon River, and a forge that Isaac Love built. And the river was named after the huge flocks of Passenger Pigeons that would hang around 'cause of the Beech Trees.
But I hear Passenger Pigeons are now extinct. So I don't think any gargoyles have to worry about them around here.

Harvester> I love how Thailog was bad to the very end as well, even though I hate how he and the clones end up as green sore covered statues in the end (don't think genetic engineering works that way, even when botched up). I liked the idea of a super clone, but that Anton monster was just dumb looking and he shouldn't have had Demona's hair or coloration because she wasn't there to contribute her DNA to the creature (pretty sure Sevarius used up her DNA to make Delilah for Thailog). I thought Thailog's remote controlled jet powered gun was cool as well, and I enjoyed his final line, "Farewell Goliath, how I enjoyed making you suffer." Though I don't know if Sevarius would really mourn over yet another lost test subject, he's pretty heartless and much more likely to simply run away while his enemies were busy.

Reno> thailog's a jerk alright, but its okay in his case (he's like Lex Luthor or The Joker, he's the bad guy you love to hate). Plus you to admire how he's outwitted nearly every other major villain on the show, despite only being a recurring baddie (still hope Demona kicks his butt again if he ever returns, I liked them as a couple, back stabbing creep...). I too hate how the relationship between Demona and Angela was handled, lets hope it improves in the comics. (:

Speaking of pigeons, I've sometimes wondered just how seriously we're supposed to take Greg Weisman's statement that gargoyles don't like pigeons. After all, the pigeon droppings (which would be the most probable basis for that antipathy) wouldn't be on the gargoyles proper so much as on the stone skin that they send flying in all directions when they wake up, meaning that they don't directly experience the humiliation.

Though I still find it amusing to imagine Bronx chasing pigeons about, barking at them furiously. (Good thing that he didn't visit Trafalgar Square during the time that he spent in London in "M.I.A."!)

Williamsburg, VA doesn't have a very large resident population either, but the fandom had a pretty nice convention there in 2002. I'm looking forward to having a con like that again. We'll try to make sure the hotel for G2007 is a little bit closer to a pancake house, though. ;)
Patrick - [<-- The Gathering 2006]
"Look, you're British, so scale it down a bit." - Eddie Izzard

Personally, the where of the Gathering is incidental... it's more the kick of getting to see friends I don't get to see anywhere else- go to panels, etc- I don't think I've left the hotel much in years past. (Exception would be 2001 where you *had* to go to the Citywalk to find food.) In 2002 we had a generally small con in Virginia and it was the best gathering, imho, because it was laid back and friendly and you weren't distracted by anything bigger than very lovely ihops.

Unless it's too expensive to go, those of us who try to make it every year are going in support of the fandom; side attractions are icing on the cake- the Gathering IS the cake.

All I ask for is a Dennies, or some other food place that stays open til dawn.

Congrats, Hecate! I'm sure Pidgeon Forge 2007 is going to kick ass and take names! I'm looking forward to taking a side trip to Dollywood, myself...

Spen - Look a little farther into the location before coming to any conclusions. It's definitely grown a lot since 1994, and I don't just mean the population. 2000 census was over 5,000, I think, and the hotel count is over 100 for the area. Not to mention the cabins and condo type places. It's mostly tourist attractions and businesses. Not many people live there, but a LOT of people visit (and make return visits). :)

King Cobra> "Dying of the Light" and "Seeing Isn't Believing." The first because, well, I just enjoy it. Good premise, not too heavy handed, generally well done and subtle. The latter is visually beautiful, shame that WDJ closed shop...they'd put out some stunning animation work. Also, Proteus was cool and I liked the inclusion of the New Olpymians, thought the staff took on something big and they actually did well with it. Of course they bungled the Demona/Angela relationship like a blind ski jumper...*grumbles*

HoE>Thailog's a jerk. But he's also resiliant and motivated. He'd sell his own fathers to...well I think everyone's seen "Double Jeopardy" have they not? ;)

Reno
Oh yeah, you and what starfleet?

Hmmmm, Tennessee. That just might be doable. If I could find some Gargoyles fans in my area to help me split the cost of fuel... (I can only imagine what its price might rise to next year).

Dragomir: Wouldn't say I'm lucky just yet. As I said, usually when you preorder something, they ask you for a phone number. This guy never did. Besides, I went looking for his place at the Four-Mile Fork Shopping Center off Jefferson Davis Highway and never found it. And it's where both Mapquest and my phone book said it would be.

Reno: Ugh, that's why I don't remember it. Still, one thing I did like about that episode was how Thailog remained a son of a bitch to the very end. His last act on this Earth was to try and inject the virus into Goliath. And somehow, Goliath still manages to shed a tear for him. What a guy.

Wish Brook had a comic book daughter instead of a son.)
2) Andrea (Demona's artistic human friend and lover from TGS)
3) Sata, cause she's an honorable sword swinging warrior and hot to boot, though not as hot as Demona of course.
4) Umbriel the Halfling, poor guy...hate Madoc
5) Jericho (I love the concept of an evil son of Demona and Goliath, even if Jericho was a truly creepy and messed up character, but NEVER boring)
6) Godiva...do I really need to say why?(still not as hot as Demona though, but love her shallow and flirtaceous nature)
7) Ventura, an evil Angie, what could be better?
