I'll say this for Irwin. As someone who thinks designer clothing is overrated, and far too much emphasis is placed on what people wear, I applaud Steve Irwin for always wearing the same thing (even when he was invited to meet President Bush, he did so in khaki). I'm not a nudist or anything. I actually collect humerous t-shirts. I just go past the Tommy Hilfiger and the American Eagle in my local mall to the Kohl's, because I think that anyone who plunks down 100 bucks for the sake of wearing a designer label is a moron, and all I give a damn about is having something that fits and will hold up after repeated washes.

The Globe and Mail posts a poem every week on some aspect of the news of the week; this week they took on Steve Irwin. I suspect most of you aren't going to like it; while I'm sorry that Irwin's died, and I'm sorry for his family, I was not a fan, and I prefer my environmentalism and naturalism much more in the vein of David Suzuki, who was an actual trained scientist and who treats the natural world with a sense of wonder and careful respect. I watched a few episodes of Crocodile Hunter and I was not impressed; I thought he was excited and enthusiastic, but far too cavalier and far, far, far too intrusive. It may have gotten good ratings, and it may have excited the kids, but I don't think the show itself was very good science or very careful naturalism.

I'll reprint it here, just so anyone who wants to can take from it what they will.

"Dear children, when you watch TV,
Adventure's what you like to see,
And when Steve Irwin wrestled crocs,
You sat in rapture by the box
As he toyed with those toothy jaws
And broke your parents' 'don't touch!' laws.
So now I know you must be sad
To lose your awesome Aussie lad,
And have to spend your prime-time nights
With nature shows where no one fights.
Wild beasts, alas, aren't ours to tease -
Your TV stars try hard to please
By taking risks in silly shorts
While some scared creature puffs and snorts,
But can't you see Steve's crossed the line
Before he felt the stingray's spine?
Your friends may like to call you 'wuss'
Because you won't torment dear Puss,
Yet you and I know why it's wrong -
So when men make crocs play along,
And find a fortune in their pain,
The entertainment's inhumane,
And nature's fragile dignity
Distorts into celebrity.
"But it's just fun," I hear you say,
"So make your moral go away."
And that's the problem: When we praise
The man who died among the rays,
We make the world a TV show
Where there's no place brave hosts won't go
To turn the far into the near
And find the fun that should be fear.

Google search turns up no hits for the phrases "Steve Irwin" and "chop suey" or "chop sui", not even in reference to a joke. On the other hand, there are plenty of hits testifying to the dog dying of cancer. So I'm going to have to call this myth "busted."

Gargoyles wear jewelry, so why wouldn't they wear make-up? In human cultures, these activities began around the same time. It would not be unreasonable for gargoyles to adopt similar practices, especially after whatever magic was done that lets whatever they're wearing turn to stone with them every morning.

Holy crap, the house right next to mine caught on fire tonight. there are fire fighters and everything trying to put it out. I didn't realize they were right next door until i decided to investigate what the noise that lasted for about 30 minutes was outside. There are people outside just gawking. I have to deal with the smell of the smoke :( they are still trying to put out the fire as i type.

Wow. I just finished watching this 60s art movie my brother recommended called "Mister Freedom." On a scale where on the extreme right you have films like Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai," and on the extreme left you have movies that are so stupid they're funny, "Mister Freedom" is on the extreme-extreme left (it's actually off the scale).

Siren: They actually had something on Mad-TV called "Aussie Hunter." It was claymation and involved Steve Irwin doing things like tying raw meat to himself and getting into a shark tank. And right before he did, he'd say things like: "This is a really stupid idea. I can't think of why anyone would want to do this."

Battle Beast: I wouldn't say that the Trio really "tried out" rock music. They each found something in the modern world that they enjoyed (such as Lexington's love of computers and electronics). I like to think they each developed a musical taste as well. As someone with an extensive music collection, I can safely say that it's one of those things where everyone finds something that they like. It's one of those things seperating sentient life from the rest of the animal kingdom.

Somehow I doubt Irwin would have said that about his beloved dog Sui. He got her in 1988 and her death, due to cancer, devastated him.

I deffinetly can see a line like that from MadTV or similar show. I could be wrong, but out of all of Steve's shows and specials, I perhaps missed 2 of them and never heard him say that line.

I do not suffer fools, gladly or otherwise.

I haven't been posting mostly because I've been posting at INTERCOT... I am going to Disney world in 38 days and I am just bouncing off the walls waiting for my trip.

Anyway... Steve Irwin> I watch the DVD of his movie, and I laughed myself silly. It's great. I still miss him!

Gargoyles wouldn't use lipstick... it's not their nature. ANd if anyone did, Angela would to "be cool" or "try something new" or something to that effect... like the trio trying out rock music or hotdogs when they first arrived. Demona certainly wouldn't waste her time with some thing that trivial... unless Dominique needed to look good.

Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

For the record, I am not the only person who remembers Steve Irwin saying the "Chop Suey" line.

"The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with. " -Marty Feldman

I don't think Gargoyles apply lipstick. I think that their lips would just be naturally a different color than their skin. That and it is just another gender-differentiating thing(such as chests and wearing tops) that would show that they are females and not males. Possible it could be that it's easier on the eyes. Or maybe it is solely for the purpose of animation. I don't know.
HeavensJoke - [blindsideme85@hotmail.com]
Going once, going twice, sold to the girl who ignored all the advice!

did he really say "Chop suey" when his dog suey was killed by crocs!? Thats rather...sadictic...I for one would be terrified and heart broken if anything that cruel and horrible happened to any of my pets, shudder. I was shocked by what happened to Irwin, never thought a stingray would do him in after all the venomous animals (thought he would be immune) and giant sized crocs he has handled over the years. I heard it stung him in the heart or something, does that mean its stinger actually cut through his skin and straight into his chest? Geeze...Cannot imagine what his family must be going through, especially since they were probably used to him dealing with wild and deadly animals.

Oh yeah, and on a totally unrelated subject that pertains to gargoyles only, does anyone here know if female gargoyles wear lipstick? I know my question sounds silly, but I have never been able to figure out if female gargs actually apply and wear lipstick, or if their lips are simply a different shade of color from the rest of their bodies. Gargoyles have always struck me as not caring too much about their outward appearance or at least not as much as humans do (gargs only started wearing clothes so as not to offend their human compatriots after all, lol). I just cannot picture Angela or Demona going through the trouble of mixing up a batch of garg lipstick every night, especially since the substance would most likely be wiped clean off their lips whenever they awoke from stone sleep! I would most appreciate an answer to my silly and newbie like question if anyone here is willing to provide it, thankyou and have a great weekend!

I've deliberately not put these on the internet, since the anthologies are to raise funds for the Gathering.

I haven't been able to find a link to purchase them, but maybe someone from the Gathering website could help out?

Meanwhile, I have some other fics up at gargoyles-fans.org, co-written with Amy K Cyrway under the name "Caligo and Wagner".

SIREN - RE: Kid on the Dock in FL -- They ran that story on the local news here... no mention about how the kid remembered what Steve had said, but it did galvanize a local effort to keep people that live near water reminded of the dangers of our local gators. Granted they usually aren't as aggressive as salt-water crocs, but when you factor in the fact people don't use common sense when they clean their fish near the waterways, or do the really stupid thing and actually FEED a gator when they see one....

STORMY - <<Yes, it was "Turn of the Cards" which I remembered. I remembered a little confusion over which characters were created by whom ... but I remember liking the vampire character in particular.>>

John Walker was a lot of fun to write in that story! I'm glad you like him!

Yeah, it pretty much threw me for a loop at the end there! I mean... we've seen Gargoyles in the series as varied/strange as Zafiro. Yet, a two-headed garg? That was creepy!

And giving Whit pause like that... priceless! :) Thanks for sharing that, Stormy!

Steve's way was unorthodox, but it was deffinetly effective. I have yet to hear of ONE news story of a person getting bit attacked by a wild animal when they imitated Steve. I think saying he would be a bad influence is saying that a majority of the public have no common sense. A majority of the public can see that he is a professional and its never a good idea to jump on top of an angry 8 foot croc. And for the idea that if children did imitate them, he should be blamed....then should we blame Superman and Peter Pan for all the injuries and deaths of children when they jumped off the dressers in their homes thinking they could fly? Parents are respondsible for their kids. Not Steve Irwin. Nor any other TV personality or character.
However, I have heard many news stories of animals attacking people and the victims remembered what Steve Irwin said to get out alive. Most recently, a teenager in Florida was sitting on a dock, hanging his feet in the water of a freshwater lake. He was just waiting for friends and relaxing, when a gator grabbed his leg and pulled him in. As he was being shaken, he remembered a technique the Croc Hunter used and talked about, and it worked and he was able to get away alive and in relativly one piece.

His way of educating wasn't perfect. Neither is Jack Hanna's, The Kratt Brothers, etc. Why? Because not everyone listens. Often people are too busy laughing at the monkey taking a crap on Jay Leno's desk rather then listen to how it is endangered. While Steve has changed many people's views on the world most misunderstood animals. The idea of a crocodile being a good mother isn't anything new, but Steve made it a famous point that most people know now.

STORMY - <<I've never gotten any feedback from any of the stories I've written for the anthologies...>>

True, I've only gotten stories in the Eye of Odin and the Grimorum anthologies, and the only word I've gotten back came from my beta-readers, prior to submission for each book. I honestly don't know if either one was well received by the fandom at large or not. Just FYI, the two stories are "Turn of the Cards" (co-written with Christi Hayden) and "Le Demoiselle et Le Tournant De L'Historie".

I know it's been said that silence is often the highest praise one can get... but that only works in Japan. :)

Didn't write the story about Freya's Eye? I thought that one was a damn good read, with an interesting twist there at the end (correct me if I'm wrong). I haven't yet read the one in the Grimorum, but the one in the PG Antho was... shall we say, epic in scale and incredible in imagry. A riveting read, Stormy!

Best to cut this off, before people complain about me rambling on and eating up space in here. :p

Stormy - [decepticoncommand@hotmail.com]

Sorry Matt, but I'm going to go with Kevin Rudd over Germaine Greer here - "a bucket load of politically correct pap," indeed. That "exploiting nature" crap is just that - crap. While most of us ignore or devalue the beauty of creation around us, Steve cherished it, shared it with others, and advocated its preservation on a level that no college-spawned, self-righteous hippy tree-hugger could never hope to achieve. That's part of why he drove them nuts.

The animals Steve interacted with weren't injured or traumatized. He saved a ton of animals from life-threatening situations. From a naturalist point of view, Steve was one of the few creatures higher on the food-chain that wouldn't eat them when he came across them.

Steve took on a dangerous line of work for a reason. Steve didn't take stupid risks. He took calculated risks and knew what he was getting into. Just because you or I don't have the passion to put ourselves in harm's way for something we believe in that strongly doesn't mean Steve was wrong to do so.

The fame and fortune that he accumulated in his work was reinvested directly into conservation efforts. He didn't live in a mansion and show up to do a documentary every other month. He and his family lived wildlife conservation and education on a daily basis.

<< If you watch an animal documentary, where a film crew merely observes animals and the subjects are rarely even aware they are being filmed, I believe this is a much more positive educational program and much safer for the animals, film makers and the public. >>

That sort of a program has its place, as do others. The idea that education should be limited to such a hands-off approach contributes to the insidious notion that humans and the rest of nature exist in some sort of opposition. While many "environmentalists" have made it a popular notion that humans exist only to rape the planet and destroy everything they touch, I don't buy into the crap Whoopie Goldberg and the folks over at Captain Planet tried to sell me as a kid.

The world around us is a gift. Steve knew that one a fundamental level, cherished it, and shared it with the world around him.

Here's to a life well lived - an increasing rarity in a world where everyone is obsessed with either reaching 100 or squandering everything by 30.

ANY NEWS ABOUT THE DVD SEASON 2 PART 2????
LaQueNoHaceNada

I just hope this incident with Steve Irwin gives these other animal tv dudes pause. I mean, any respectable conservation biologist will tell you not to attempt to bother or handle wildlife and to watch and respect it from a distance. These people, including Steve Irwin, who outright chase wild animals around grabbing them and displaying them for the camera are not only risking their own safety, but they are also setting a bad example to the public and causing unneccesary stress to wildlife. In a way, what Steve Irwin and all his followers and imitators are doing is explotive to nature. If you watch an animal documentary, where a film crew merely observes animals and the subjects are rarely even aware they are being filmed, I believe this is a much more positive educational program and much safer for the animals, film makers and the public. I regret that Steve Irwin died, but it was his own fault. He chased, baited, teased and exploited wildlife for the camera and the crowds. He may have cared about conservation and he may have loved animals, but I wonder how much he respected nature. Sorry if I'm pissing anyone off, but I guess if we are gonna spend a week discussing Steve Irwin, I may as well comment honestly on the subject.
Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]
"The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with. " -Marty Feldman

That was the basis of what I was saying, yes. Based on what I'm hearing, I don't think a lot of these shows that have sprung up really have Irwin's ideals at their cores.
Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75@gmail.com]
"Mister Steve Irwin's gone wrestling..." ) :

Humans are not the only animals to exhibit altruistic behavior such as risking their own life to save another's. Nor are humans the only animal to make a choice to do something that will not help their survival, and in fact lower their fitness. I can name many examples to back me up. The point is, altruistic and self-destructive behaviors must be looked at closely to find their true evolutionary origins.

I think Steve Irwin showed many people the wonders and exciting and interesting things he saw in nature. And I applaud his efforts for conservation. But the fact is, he took many risks in his life, some simply to please the camera or the crowds, and this time it cost him his life. It is not my place to say whether he did something wrong or whatever. He made his own decisions, and if he wanted to take certain risks, that is his concern. All I'm saying is that from an evolutionary standpoint, which is what Harvester was speaking from, Steve Irwin took as much of a risk as a guy who swims with sharks or someone who doesn't wear their seatbelt. In nature is selecting these people to die, then thats that. I know Steve Irwin was an expert in doing the things he did, but he also (perhaps more than anyone else) had to know that everytime he interacted with wildlife as he did he was taking a risk.

Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]
"The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with. " -Marty Feldman

Matt: You may be right, but one of the things that separates us from other animals is that we do sometimes choose to do things for others that are not in our own best interests. He did what he did to promote conservation, and he cared about animals as much as humans. There are plenty of cases of people giving their lives to save others, which is clearly not in their own best interests. One might argue that that is foolish and stupid, but most people would consider it a noble sacrifice, and I'm sure Irwin would feel the same way.
Jurgan - [jurgan6@yahoo.com]

HofEyes> If you want to look at it that way you also have to say that Steve Irwin was asking to be naturally selected out of the gene pool since swimming with stingrays was not imperitive to his survival in any way.

The overlying theme for him seems to be one of tempting animals with sharp teeth to eat him.

Greetings,

STEVE IRWIN - I found his enthusiasm and love for wildlife in general a refreshing shot in the arm, considering I'm one of the generation that grew up with the likes of Marlin Perkins and Jacques Cousteau showing us the 'wonder' of the world's wildlife on land and sea. Steve, his wife Terri and their crew had a zeal and passion for the work they did to bring the world into the wild -- up close and personal-like -- with the creatures that we share this planet with. Granted, some of his actions seem like daredevil risktaking, but for a man like Steve, I don't see him doing anything by halves. He lived his life the way he wanted, and be damned with what anyone else thought.

RIP, Mate . . . good-on ya, Steve. We'll miss you.

-- Kythera, the cover art is incredible, as usual... seeing it on the finished cover is a treat. Kudos!

-- To everyone else -- considering I'm still reading the stories as I go -- great work, all. Granted I know this is years-late in the giving, but I really never got to read these works before now... I'm such a lousy fan, eh? (don't answer that!)

Steve never did it for money. He did it for education. His producer and him actually has a discussion several months ago about diving. His prodocuer showed concern that Steve was fast on land, he was a man of the Outback, but he told Steve he was unsure of how he could translate himself into the sea. But Steve wanted to do it. He loved sharks and rays too. He wanted to teach people about them as well. He was diving before Shark Week came around. He was also an avid surfer till his last knee surgery. He went into the water because he wanted to, not because they paid him too.

Matt > That quote is definitely not Steve Irwin. Whatever show you remember seeing where that quip was delivered sounds to me like it must have been Saturday Night Live, MAD TV, or something else poking fun at him.

Steve Irwin was something of a daredevil, but at least underneath the persona he seriously knew what he was doing. It's not possible to say the same of some of the imitators that have followed after on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. It's sad that they so heavily promote the idea that to be a hardcore wildlife conservationist, you have to be a risk-taking fool. When someone who's never even used scuba gear before decides he's going to free-dive with Great White Sharks and the network pays him big bucks to do it, that's just irresponsible. That's one of many reasons that I've put Shark Week "On Notice."

The fact that today was possibly the worst I've ever had does not help matters any. Not to be vulgar, but the only thing that comes to mind whenever I think about it is "Crikey this sucks."

I'm really depressed now. I think I need a hug or something. *distbutes cookies and milk to everyone in the CR in a feeble attempt to cheer them up.*

Oh look, a skyscraper!

Well, that is the way my brother, his wife and myself remember it. It was years ago though.

Matt: That quote's not true, as far as I can tell. The dog died of cancer, according to tv.com (best I can do): "Steve experiences one of the saddest days of his life when his best friend, Sui, is diagnosed with cancer; later he keeps an all-night vigil by her side." Everything else I've heard goes along with that, and, really, given that the man cried over a dead crocodile, making a callous joke about the death of his dog is pretty out-of-character.
Jurgan - [jurgan6@yahoo.com]

The fact that he was killed by an animal that generally doesn't kill humans probably would be okay with Steve. I mean, it just wouldn't have been right for him to die in a car crash or something. He was doing what he loved and, frankly, I would have expected nothing less than such a death from Steve. I'm not implying that his death was for entertainment value or anything, just that Steve would probably have rather died doing what he loved than anything else.
I'll never forget my favorite Crocodile Hunter moment from like ten years ago when his dog Suey jumped into a river full of crocodiles and was attacked and killed by them and Steve without skipping a beat looked at the camera and said, "I guess she's Chop Suey now..."
RIP

Man, what a down note to end a weekend on. I mean, I know Steve Irwin's volunteered himself into a dangerous career, but he was always good with the dangerous stuff. As much of a showman and an enthusiast as he was, he respected the creatures and environments he worked in. So he gets killed in a freak accident involving one of the animals least likely to kill a human being.

Seriously, this was like having a championship bull-rider die by being kicked in the head by a mule, or like a Nascar driver dying in on a highway in his towncar by a tractor-trailer rollover.

I feel very sorry for the family Steve's left behind, as well as a broad network of associates, friends, and fans whose lives were made brighter by knowing him. At the same time, though, I feel it appropriate to remember that Steve lived more of life in his short 44 years than I'll probably ever do if God blesses me with 80. Death can come like a thief in the night, so we'd best live each day like it has to count for something.

Steve did that. He made a difference and had the time of his life doing that.

Here's to a life lived well.

Siren> 60's-70's... thanks a bunch!!! I'll go convert that...

Anyway, I remember that episode of South PArk... Rusell Crowe "fightin' round the world"... was pretty funny, but kinda gross at the end if I remember.

Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

YAMI - Thanks. I don't have cable, so almost all references to cable television shows will be things that I won't get, I'm afraid.

Found out about Steve while I was in San Francisco this weekend... We were all kind of shocked.

I do not suffer fools, gladly or otherwise.

A friend of mine made this new website. http://www.ripsteve.com/ You can leave a message for Steve, there is info on his life and death, and a forum to discuss him.

BattleBeast, yes, I am in Florida. It starts to cool down in Oct. But not by much, usually high 60s-low 70s

Yami: And Crowe strikes me as someone who would get in a fistfight with Goliath, just for the hell of it.

Oh, and Todd, the magic tugboat reference is from South Park, in which Crowe gets in the tugboat and goes all around the world trying to fight people. It was very funny. ^_^

Sorry about the double post, I forgot to add this at the end of my first.

Yami Raven - [raven_mccloud2002@yahoo.com]

I loved to watch Steve Irwin. The world has lost a great man. At least his message will live on through his wife, children, and all the people whose lives he's touched. RIP

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

My friend emailed me this morning about it. I'm pretty upset about it, buecause I love animals and anyone who would injure themselves to protect anykind of animals is tops in my book.

Crikey, I'm gonna miss him. RIP.

On another note, and not to take anything away from my previous comment, I've just book for Wally world! YAh me!

I am goinc to be havinc fun, yes no? (I've been watching waaaay too much tale Spin.)

Siren> you are from Orlando or around there, right?? What is the weather like there in October?? Warm? Still hot??

RIP.

Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

Well, at least he died doing what he loved.

Dragomir: I think it's too soon to tell if Angela has had an outfit change. I've learned that comic covers sometimes depict things differently from what you actually see.

Todd: Well, at least we potentially still have Russell Crowe. "Hoi, kids, Ah'm Russell Crowe, an' oi love to foight!" He could bring his magic tugboat to Manhattan, then find a gargoyle and throw a phone at them in order to start a fight. It's not that he wants to villainize gargoyles in the media or anything, he just loves to fight. ( ;

Yeah, Todd, those were always fun.

Thanks for the heads up Leo.

Something that most likely will never appear in the comic, but which I still can't resist mentioning here:

Goliath and Elisa face their greatest challenge ever: putting Cagney in his cat-carrying case so that Elisa can take him to the vet for his annual check-up.

I'm sorry to hear about Steve Irwin. I suppose that this means the end of those little creativity demons that we used to have here of his following the gargoyles about, making a documentary about their various habits, and the clan getting increasingly annoyed by his constant presence (especially when he decides to cover gargoyle mating habits with Broadway and Angela....).

Technically I think it's to soon for the Double date as well, for all the reasons stated previously in the room. But my own personal reason is that I don't Believe Delilah has had enough of a chance to develop her personality yet. If Goliath goes on a date with Delilah now well that's nothing more then her programing. Programing isn't love and I'm sure Goliath would know that. Going on a date with Delilah now would be like going on a date with a blow up doll.

Bugger about Steve, isn't it?

Chameleongirl
Chameleon may changer her spots, but she refuses to do plaid.

I was about to throw this down as some idiotic urban legend (like Blue's Clues Steve dieing from a drug overdose legend that started a few years ago)

But OMG...its true...its f***ing true. I'm crying right now. I can't believe it
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=127458

I don't know how I'm going to tell my daughter. We watched his shows and specials religiously. She aspires to be him. I HAVE to tell her. Some kid at school will probably tell her there and I don't want her to find out that way.

I know, this sounds so stupid. To cry about a man I never met, but I still knew him. He was a wonderful man. I just can't believe it.

what does everyone think of Angelas new outfit in the comic? the Demona type halter and skirt make her look more mature in my opinon, perhaps forshadowing that she is no longer the somewhat naive young lass she was when she first entered the outside world...And it makes her look even more like her mom, lol.
