Yes, but my essential point is that I think Demona hates humans too much to want to eat them.

Todd> Ever seen "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". People eat all sorts of crazy things.

Maybe, but keep in mind that Demona isn't human. She may not share some human tendencies and revulsions. And besides, there are many humans in the world who eat cockroaches and other bugs without revulsion. Demona isn't American anymore than she is human.

"Any humans or just the ones that were kept in a particular shape?"

Not sure, actually. But, I saw it on the discovery channel on a show that was about people being stranded on some huge mountain or something, and the people who were still alive ate their dead comrades. Anyway, the show mentioned that human meat was actually exceptionally good for you, even though it was difficult to eat (since the idea of eating fellow humans grosses people out).

I would assume that a healthy human in good shape, who didn't consume alcohol, nicotine, and all kinds of other chemicals, would certainly be better. But I don't know.

Food>

I'm a plebe when it comes to food. There just aren't any high class restaurants in my town. I don't understand what all the fuss is about, especially comparing eating fast food with, er, Soylent Green. When it comes to taste, you often can't even lead the horse to water, much less make them drink. They've got to do it for themselves.

ew. human meat would not be good. In general, omnivores aren't that great to eat. And all the weird chemicals that humans ingest that would get into the meat as well. Ew.

Yes I know, some pretty strange chemicals go into bovine antibiotics, but no one's giving alcohol, nicotine, or other carcinogens to my pork, beef, and poultry.

On second thought, maybe a 'straight edge' vegetarian may not be so bad, but still....

Here! Here! to 4 star Italian and Sushi!

Soylent Green>

I've never seen the movie, so I don't know exactly what goes into producing soylent green. All I know is that

*~*spoiler*~*

it's made of people.

*~*spoiler*~*

But, that still leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Are the people murdered and then made into soylent green, or are people who die of natural causes and old age made into soylent green?

Honestly, I wouldn't have much of a problem eating food made of humans. But ONLY if it wasn't a situation where people were murdered, and then processed into food. I've heard that human meat is actually very nutritious.

Rebel

GregB> Understood, but a little fast food here and there doesn't hurt. I certainly don't make a habit out of them.

Matt> That doesn't mean I'll eat just anything. As long as it's both edible (proven not to be hazardous) and good tasting, I'll eat it.

My point (to Patrick, not you) is that a person's choice of food is not really worth starting an arguement over.

Steampunk: A genre that's always been at the fringes of my perception, it seems to be gaining a lot of momentum as a subculture and cropping up everywhere these days. Fine by me, it's a fun aesthetic. Think Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, airships, laboratories, steam contraptions, wheels and cogs, mechanical devices, and lots of copper, brass, iron, and glass. For a good introduction, try Brass Goggles, the definitive steampunk blog: http://ccgi.firewyre.force9.co.uk/brassgoggles/

Well, yes. Hence the word "imagine" before "steam-powered robots". Basically, it's the aesthetic and theory of Victorian era steam technology applied to concepts and inventions that were never made in the age of steam power. So you have robots and jetpacks and other fantasy tech that look like they're powered by steam and designed around the nineteenth century. I'm not entirely sure how this is going to be applied to MGC; maybe some Victorian looking gargoyles using steam-powered gadgets. But we'll see.

My favorite character is Elisa because she can kick bad guy ass lol. And of course my favorite couple is Goliath and Elisa.

Imagine steam-powered robots in Victorian England, or take a look at Final Fantasy IX and its Airships. That's Steampunk.

Harvestor: And if it's authentic Mexican, odds are it'll be a corn tortilla rather than a flour one . . .

Coincidentally, my family and I just went to one of Phoenix's finer pizza shops, run by a family from New York -- I'm still stuffed.

Patrick> I think Pizza Hut is good pizza. I do not, however, think it's *great* pizza. It's just the best I can do most of the time. Most of the places that would serve better stuff are far away and/or more expensive than I can afford on a normal basis.

And Taco Bell does bad things to my stomach. >..<

Great way to put it. I was going to say something like this myself, but you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I agree completely.

Rebel

I've come to the conclusion that whenever a pizza shop has the word 'pizza' prominently in their name, then their pizza typically sucks. Everything else they have is good, but pizza bad. Same goes for any other type of food. Here in my hometown, we have a Mr. Pizza- whose pizza stinks, but subs are great- and a Mr. Sub, whose subs stink, put pizza's great. Same goes for the Hut.

Now I'm hungry :(

King Cobra> No self respecting New Yorker eats at Pizza Hut. That's a rule.

At the G2003 Gathering, a couple of attendees ordered from Dominos, and I was thinking "Why, you're in New York, go to or order from a pizzeria. Have some real pizza. None of this chain crap."

why do we build castles in the sky?

I'm in Northeast Louisiana, and most of the pizza places around here are huge national chains...Domino's, Pizza Hut, etc.

However, there is one bright light in the darkness. We have a small chain that started here in Monroe, called Johnny's. It's good stuff. Probably not on par with Chicago or New York pizza, but definitely palatable.

Also, has anyone been to Giordano's in Chicago? I had that once, and it was awesome.

Also, I agree with someone's earlier comment about cheese pizza. I'll eat it if it's there, but toppings make it so much better. I have three favorites:

1. Pepperoni
2. Pepperoni and mushroom
3. EVERYTHING on it (okay, maybe a FEW things left off, but almost everything).

Rebel

Pizza> There aren't many gourmet pizza places in my part of Alabama. For regular pizzas, I tend to go with Papa John's over Pizza Hut. But if I want a good pizza, I go to Mellow Mushroom.

That is all I will say.

In fairness, most of the people here don't need the mailing list to get information about new issue releases, but I'm still very glad to have it for people who don't, even if it's just two or three people. I was going to include news about the T-shirt in the e-mail for the next issue release since, with luck, that won't be very far off.

Incidentally, are the Gathering staff planning to set up one of those affiliate deals for the T-shirts? If so, I'll wait and order through that.

One more thing: Contacting Guandalug la'Fay is a *very* **high** ***priority*** for Ed Reynolds and I.

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Todd - That's why Ed started the mailing list that he did. To help people keep up with new issues. Right now, the group has a measily 6 members. If you subtract off Ed and I, that leaves 4 other people. I'll also have to talk to Ed about advertising other gargoyles merchandise that randomly shows up.

Also, don't forget that if Bad Guys gets 6 issues, we'll probably see a trade publication of those 6 issues released. Also, if Greg Weisman gets to issue #12, then it's probably a safe bet that we will be another compiled issue.

I have a question for those of you who know much more about comics & their publishing: Is it possible/probable by now that bad guys issue #2 has made it to Disney's office for approval?

dph_of_rules
Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Todd> I think that could be part of our strategy, but spreading the word is still important too. Buying the shirt is a good way to both let Disney know that there's still money to be made on "Gargoyles" and help start conversations about the DVD and comic without actually having to say anything. And while we do want to try to win back any comic readers who might have believed the book was cancelled or just become frustrated by the irregular schedule, we can't assume that every dropped sale is due to that. People could just as easily have said "Well, I gave it a couple of issues and it just isn't wowing me" or "I guess you have to have seen the whole show to really get what's going on" or some other reason. So yes, any kind of spreading the word is going to help.
Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I think our main goal should be, not so much buying the t-shirts (though that wouldn't hurt), as persuading people who've bought issues already not to give up on the comic because of the irregular schedule. The specific mention of "dropping sales" suggests that that's the big problem: not so much "people don't know about the comic" as "they do, but they've stopped buying it because they're fed up with it not coming out on time".
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Timedancing> People may get that the Phoenix Gate travels through time. They may even get that that's all it does, as opposed to a more all-purpose magical artifact. But the show took between two and three episodes to full explain how time travel works in the Gargoyles universe, and that may not come across in the comic if there's a lot of other material to cover (unless issue #9 is nothing but a full explanation of Goliath's history with the Gate and all that really happens is Brooklyn touching it). I just want new readers to have a reasonable shot at understanding that the Brooklyn that comes back is an older Brooklyn, not a future Brooklyn, an alternate timeline Brooklyn, or a Brooklyn who went back in time and changed history.

A Concern> Not to start a panic, but is anyone else concerned about whether the Disney license might expire before we even get twelves issues of the comic? I'm guessing the license goes up for renewal on a certain date, not at a certain number of issues. Anyone know when the license is up? I know Dan Vado previously said he planned to renew the "Gargoyles" license, but if the book isn't making enough money at this point, that could change.

Thoughts?

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Ok, all this talk of pizza makes me ask one profound question: What's the deal with people preferring cheese pizzas? A pizza whose only topping is cheese just isn't a real pizza to me.

Pizza Hut is usually a last resort for me. Maybe if I were lost in the wilderness and starving. MAYBE.

The thing is, I lived in New England for 20+ years, so I agree with Greg. When my father was living in Manhattan after my parents separated, he used to take me and my brothers to this place by the 59th Street Bridge called Ray's. Anyone who's grown up eating pizza like that was spoiled. ( ;

Kerry (Kth) Boyd - [Kth_dragon at hotmail dot com]

You know, I've actually been thinking about it, and to go with the whole 'clan-building' theme, I have this sort of well... theory. I've sort of mentioned it before, but I wanted to streamline it. And I dunno if you guys are going to agree with me or disagree with me, but it'll be interesting to see what you all think.

Okay, so let's break this down into four arcs. Arc 1 is "The Journey" 2 is "Invitation Only" arc 3 is "The Rock" arc 4 is "Timedancer". Now let's look at the relationships that are most present in each arc. "The Journey" sees the genesis of Broadway and Angela's love. "Invitation Only" sees the reconciliation of Elisa and Goliath. Then "The Rock" could potentially introduce us to Lexington's mate. Whoever that may be. While "Timedancer" sees the onset of Katana and Brooklyn by the end.

So yeah, in truth each chapter seems to really be focused on either kindling the relationship between two existing characters (and thus setting up little broadways, Angelas and metaphorical little goliaths and elisas) down the road, or adding mates to already existing members of the clan... so yeah.

That's my thinking anyway.

As for the flow of the last three issues, I'm still kinda thinking we'll see the thing from Brooklyn's perspective. Simply because the manhattan's clan perspective would be kinda dull. 24 pages of "Where did Brooklyn go!?".

My Alternative Fuel Solution
Cameron_Philips@greywolfenterprise.com

I think the government should do with the auto industry the same way that was dealt with HDTV. What I mean is set a date for the the auto manufactures to switch over to making clean running cars, and no I'm not talking about biofuel or any fuel that burns and produces greenhouse gases or any of that crap.

For instants the government should mandate by 2012 ALL auto manufactures MUST produce a TOTALLY green car such as my favorite Hydrogen fuel cell, Electric, or Solar vehicles. I think the idea of hybrid cars (gas and electric) is a half ass way to solve the greenhouse gas issue.

Then by 2016 all gasoline cars people currently own would be mandated to either by another brand new car with one of the totally green options I mentioned or have their current car converted.

You may ask. How do you produce hydrogen cleanly without using fossil fuels? My answer is "Electrolysis (breaking apart the hydrogen and oxygen atoms)". Basically you would set up hydroelectric power plants along rivers. The cleanly produced electricity would run the electrolysis process and use the water fro creating hydrogen that would be stored in storage tanks to be shipped around the country to local gas stations around the country.

The government should help auto manufactures financially for a few years to help kick start the production and also send some money to service stations and such to help with setting up fueling stations for hydroelectric vehicles.

You may say, "The hydroelectric cars are going to be TOO expensive for the average consumer". I say "So was everything else once too, but what happened? The prices on a lot of the used to be high priced items came down". Yes only the rich may be able to afford these vehicles AT FIRST, But the price WILL come down. Just like anything else thats been in the market for a while.

The producers of fossil fuels need to stop their bitching and hop on the hydroelectric bandwagon. If they change their industry to this new fuel. The producers of fossil fuels NOW, would not go out of business but instead I think they would turn a larger profit with this new hydroelectric fuel.

I heard something about still using SOME fossil fuels even after 2020
I think what the president is saying about not really shifting to these new ideas as far as mandating them is a bunch of crap. What I mean is all this talk about finding alternative fuels is just that "talk". We need people in the government and the auto industry to put their heads together and not just "talk" about changing to a TOTALLY clean solution. We as US citizens need "ACTION" not "TALK". Think about our future children and our children presently. Think if the government keeps this up with there sluggishness for change imagine this. 2020 You have to were REALLY powerful sunscreen, you will have to wear a special hat and sunglasses, special gas mask to block the pollution from hurting you. Think about this stuff your kids have to wear before they can go outside, and TONS more cancer cases TONS more people dead. I'm sure the future isn't that grim. I believe in Power To The People. We the people, need to stand united and put our combined boots up their ass to get the government to move faster on this issue.

Issues 10 - 12> Debuting Brooklyn and his family after Brooklyn's first adventure could work, but I think you have to put in a little bit more explanation of what happens between Brooklyn leaving from his first adventure and Brooklyn and family returning to Manhattan. I'm OK with doing nothing but a cliffhanger revealing older Brooklyn and his family if we stay with the Manhattan clan's perspective the whole timeThey would be confused about what just happened, so I'd be fine with the audience feeling the same way. But if we're going to see Brooklyn disappear, see his first adventure and then witness his return, I think we need some indication of what's going on. Keep in mind that we're looking at this from the perspective of people who know both the original show and much of what is going to happen in the comic, so there's no chance of us getting confused. New readers don't have it so easy. The problem with dealing with magic in a series is that unless you define what its abilities and limits are, you can inadvertently give the sense that anything can happen. We know what the Phoenix Gate does, but new readers may not. It could be a fun misdirect if we see Brooklyn leave his first adventure, then cut back to Manhattan expecting him to be returning from that same adventure, only to see the much older Brook and his while family appear. But it could also be very confusing for any new readers. Rather than making the correct deduction that Brooklyn spent nearly 40 additional years traveling, they could just assume that "something magical happened." The result could be newer readers thinking "Wow! What happened? I can't wait to see the next issue!" or "Wait, what just happened? This comic is confusing and it's at least 2 months until the next issue."

Here's how I think it could be done:

1) Brooklyn finishes his adventure in Scotland. The Phoenix Gate shows up. Brooklyn says something along the lines of " Well, that was fun. Time to go home." He grabs the gate, but ends up someplace that is clearly not home. THEN we go back to modern day Castle Wyvern in Manhattan and have Brook and family show up. That at least gives the suggestion that Brooklyn didn't go home immediately and gives the newer readers a better chance of guessing at what actually happened.

2) Again, Brook finishes up in Scotland and grabs the Gate, thinking he's going back home. As we go back to the Manhattan clan, we have some continuing narration from Brooklyn. As the clan wonders what happened and sees the flash of the Phoenix Gate returning, Brook says something like "I did get back home...." And as older Brooklyn and his family are revealed, the narration says "...it just took me a little longer than I expected." Preserving the surprise a little more, but again, giving newer fans a fair shot at sorting out why Brooklyn looks different and has these new gargoyles with him.

Additionally, I guess this rules out the possibility that Nashville's hatching in 1978 is the same trip where Brooklyn drop Mary and Finella off in the 1970s. Even if they do take more than one stop with him, they'd have to be around for quite a while in order for Brooklyn to meet Katana, fall in love, become her mate, and conceive an egg with her, and for Katana to lay that egg and for the egg to hatch. And since Mary and Finella were apparently only supposed to look about 20 years older when they showed up at the masque, I'm guessing they weren't hopping through time that long.

Anyone else think there's a nice symmetry to Brooklyn's first timedancing stop and the World Tour's first stop both being at what is now Wyvern, Scotland?

Manhattan Clan Second> I don't think we're going to see any decisions made about that anytime soon. After all, Brooklyn is going to come back only 10 gargoyle years older than Goliath (as he was 10 biological years younger than Goliath when he left), so it's not as big a deal as having Hudson being the second in command. We don't remotely know how old Goliath will be when he performs his act of self-sacrifice; he could concievably already be nearing the end of his lifespan. Anyway, assuming both of them survive to the point where it would be an issue, I think Brooklyn might suggest to Goliath that he should select a younger second and Brook will step down. For the time being, I don't think it's going to be an issue. The clan is going to have enough to deal with adjusting to Brooklyn being now older than Goliath and getting to know Katana, Nashville, and Fu-Dog. And there's a new egg to care for.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I think Brooklyn will lead after Goliath, and I'm thinking Angela will be next. We haven't met Katana or Nashville yet, so I don't know what their personalities will be like.

But, as far as Angela goes, she strikes me as having great potential to be a leader someday. We already know she has at least some leadership abilities, or she would not have been second on avalon. Also, she's got great parentage. Goliath has been a great leader for his clan and Demona was...well, let's just say if things had turned out differently I think she would have been a lot more trusting, and thus, a lot better leader.

She's clearly very intelligent. I doubt that her leadership style would be very similar to Goliath's or Brooklyn's, but that still doesn't mean it couldn't be good. And, I think Angela's background (growing up with humans, trusting them, etc.) could prove very useful for a leader in the future.

Rebel

Sorry for the double post, but does anyone have any idea how old Fu-Dog is supposed to be.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Don't forget that Coldstone and Coldfire are supposed to join the clan. And with Coldsteel in the neighborhood, that might happen sooner rather than latter.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

I still wouldn't expect Thailog in 10, 11 and 12. Greg is telling a big story here, and I just don't see the room for him and Shari. Besides, Thailog couldn't and shouldn't be in every issue.

Also, I expect the "trip" to be told from Brooklyn's point of view. He leaves in 10, he returns in 12.

Demonskrye> " It would feel more like he just went on one adventure and somehow came back 40 years older."

I'd say give the readers a little more credit than this. He's not just coming back 40 years older, he's coming back with a mate, a young gargoyle, a beast and an egg. I think the readers would catch on pretty quick to what happened.

Actually, come to think of it, the clan-building arc will probably end with Nashville, Katana and would-be-Tachi coming to join the Manhattan clan. Fitting with the whole 'clan-building' idea, with the most significant contribution. Especially if we meet Lexington's would-be lover in London.

Everyone who desires a mate in the clan (i.e. everyone but Hudson) will have one.

Aldrius

Issue 12 is the end of the "Clan-Building" arc. I strongly feel that Greg will end it like he did Reawakenings, Hunter's Moon, or the Journey. You know? It won't an ambiguous ending that leaves us hanging, but also gives us hope for the future. Sorry for the double post.

Well I don't think that Brooklyn will step down. Greg has given no indication that he will. I think that after Goliath dies, Brook will become leader...for a while anyway. His Second though... prolly Angela, or Katana. Nashville might be second when he gets a little older, it depends on when Goliath dies.

This is kinda out of the blue, but who do you guys think will be the future leader of the Manhattan clan. After Brooklyn gets back from his timedancing, he will be biologically older than Goliath. So he is not the "long term" answer to leadership. Greg has stated that Goliath sacrifices his life for the good of Human/Gargoyle relations. So depending on when that happens, Brooklyn might have stepped down as second for a younger person to take his place or he will be only leader for a short time. My vote for the next second or leader are either Angela or Nashville.

Algernon > That's what I'm leaning towards as well.
Rebel

I'm guessing that Greg will want to play Brook's mini-clan as a bit of a surprise. Given that, we'll probably see Brook disappear after at the end his first adventure with Mary and Finnella. We then cut back to the modern day just as Brook returns home. I'm visualizing a big WTF type splash panel at the very end of issue 12 revealing Katana, Nashville, Fu-Dog and a middle age Brooklyn. At least that's what I'd do if I were writing. Of course if I was writing the comic would probably be crap and come out with less frequency then a solar eclipse.

That is all I will say.

I think #10 should go like this: Within the first few pages, the Phoenix Gate takes Brooklyn to his first journey. He then leaves and his 40 year journey begins. We go back to castle and the rest of the clan is wondering what happened to him. He then reapers with his new family and briefly greats the rest of the clan before the sun rises and the episode ends. I think 11 and 12 should concentrate on the clans conflict with Thailog because that is what the first few comics concentrated on.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Timedancing Continuity> My guess is that Brooklyn will both arrive and return in issue #10. Essentially there are two perspectives to tell this story from. Either we go with Brooklyn's perspective, where he spends 40 years traveling through space and time before returning home, or we go with the rest of the Manhattan clan's perspective, whee Brooklyn disappears and returns mere minutes later 40 years older accompanied by his new family. Now we know Greg isn't going to do all of Brooklyn's timedancing adventures, just one for now. So it would be very hard to convey that Brooklyn spent the full 40 years journeying before returning home. You could do a quick teaser montage of some of Brooklyn's other adventures, but I don't think that's going to be adequate to convey how long Brooklyn spends timedancing. It would feel more like he just went on one adventure and somehow came back 40 years older. The easiest way to tell the story is to show it from the rest of the clan's point of view. They see Brooklyn disappear and reappear within a very short time period, but very much changed when he comes back. Then Brooklyn explains that he's been time traveling for 40 years and tells his clan about what's happened to him.
Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

The opening sentence of the solicitation reminds me of the creativity demon that I had many years ago of Brooklyn, deposited by the Phoenix Gate in 10th century Scotland after the Magus's curse, materializing in front of his petrified self, crying out in alarm for a moment, then recognizing the "thing" that's confronting him, and commenting "How embarrassing". (Though the one difficulty with it taking place directly like that is that the stone Brooklyn would have been placed on the battlements facing outwards, like the rest of the clan; Brooklyn would have to be hovering in mid-air to be staring straight into his stone face.)

So Mary and Finella are pretending to be sorceresses (at least they've got the book of spells to play the part)? I hadn't expected that.

I hope that we get #8 soon. And that the delay doesn't weaken the sales further (I think it's safe to assume that the No. 1 reason for the dropping sales problem is the irregular release schedule).

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Hmm... kinda assumed that they'd be telling the story of the grimorum and Mary and Finella in the Gargoyles comic rather than the Timedancer spin-off. Seeing as how it's the one with the most important story to the overall Gargoyles storyline. (Plus Mary and Finella's likely cameo in the Halloween story) One thing I'm wondering is the average amount of time Brooklyn will stay in a time period. One issue? One story arc?

At least we'll finally get to see Demona in a fairly major capacity in the comic. Whether it's in the 70's with Xanatos or if maybe we'll run into her in 900's with Mary and Finella somehow. (Before she gathered her new clan)

That last bit is doubtful, but still a possibility I guess.

Aldrius

Speaking of #11, I just came from ASK GREG, and it looks like the events of February 28, 1991 have been withheld. Given when Xanatos purchased Castle Wyvern, I'd say the date in 1991 probably has something to do with him acquiring the Grimorum.

dph > When I said "non-linear" I was referring to Brooklyn's point of view. Though I did mention a while back that it would be really interesting if the timedancer adventures took place in the order they actually took place in, but not the order they occurred from Brooklyn's perspective. I doubt this approach will be taken though.

I'm not necessarily saying that I think 10-12 WILL have a non-linear approach. Just saying it COULD happen. It'd be a fun opportunity to play around with time in interesting ways (although skipping around could make it *too* hard to follow).

Rebel

Brett - [bretthanover at gmail dot com]

Rebel - Define "Linear approach" when dealing with Time Travel. One linear approach is to follow events chronologically. One linear approach is to follow from a person's point of view. I'll explain the difference using MIA: Chronological linear means showing Goliath arriving to pick up Griff completely out of context and then skipping to the present. POV (from the travellers) linear is what we saw.

Relatively dumb question: Does the announcement about the title for issue #11 imply that Greg Weisman has finished with scripting issue #10, red tornado #1&2, and bg issue #5? According to http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=733 , Greg was going to write the script for Red Tornado #1, gargoyles issue #10, red tornado issue #2, then bg issue #5. If the pattern holds, I'm guessing that red tornado issue #3 would be the next thing scripted before he got around to scripting issue #11.

dph_of_rules
Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Chip > That's a good theory. I tend to lean towards him disappearing towards the middle/end of issue 10. The action from then forward would largely be concerned with Brooklyn, perhaps with occasional flashes to Angela/Broadway/Lex being all worried. I think the end of 10, the entirety of 11, and a sizable chunk of 12 would be devoted to the adventure that Greg Bishansky mentioned below (and possibly some allusions to other adventures, but there's only so many adventures you can fully explore in such a small amount of space). At some point in 12, the aforementioned adventure would end, and the comic would somehow transition back to present day Manhattan, where Brooklyn and family arrive on the last panel of 12, leaving us with a cliffhanger. At least, that's what I think will happen.

I wouldn't rule out issues 10-12 taking a non-linear approach to things, the way 7-9 will. I think it would still remain *mostly* linear and we'd still pretty much follow Brooklyn in the "Tyrant" plot, but we might get flashes here and there to other adventures.

Rebel

This is interesting, it indicates that issue 11 takes place in the past. Now we know for certain that at least part of the Timedancer story will be told in these three issues. I suspect that Brooklyn leaves and returns in issue 10(with Katana,Fu-Dog, Nashville and Egg in tow), and issues 11 & 12 some of the dances are told as flashbacks or are told to Thailog by Shari. (Mind you it's just theory I could be wrong) What do you think?

It's also possible that those are the expected ship dates for issues #8 and #2 respectively and TFAW listed the wrong issues by accident. But there's no way we're getting 3 issues of the main book between now and next month and 3 issues of "Bad Guys" between now and April. Chris > It would infuriate her, because by doing things like this, Elisa keeps chipping away at the idea that "all humans are evil". She'd be mad that she'd been proven wrong repeatedly--and she'd also be insanely jealous--since Elisa is truly a good person, her and Goliath's relationship will probably last, and Demona will never get Goliath back (she hates him and loves him at the same time...she loves the "idea" of him that she has built in her head, but hates the reality).

Umm...like I said, it still *could* be a gargbeast, if gargoyle beasts have a similar variation in sizes that gargoyles do. I doubt it, but it's a possibility. If it is a gargbeast, it certainly isn't as big as Bronx or Boudicca.

I don't think that's what it is, though.

"Attend the petty jealousies and angers that prey upon your heart."

I don't think Lex is holding a garbeast. In all the episodes he is never shown caring Bronx on his own because Bronx is too big for him to carry. And if he could carry Bronx, Lex would have to hold Bronx under him, not strait ahead of him. And besides, this comic takes place in November 1996, so the next rookery to hatch for all Gargoyle clans would be about March 1998. So it is not a gargpup. The last rookery would have been in 1978, making any garbeast the same age biologicaly as Bronx. And we all know how big Bronx is.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I just thought about it, and having such huge size differences would make breeding a little...difficult. But then again, what if a male gargoyle the size of Goliath and a female gargoyle the size of Lex became mates (or vice versa)? I'm sure they'd manage somehow.
Rebel

How old would the gargbeasts of the London clan be? I'm wondering if its even plausible that it could be a gargpup. Especially since they mature much faster than regular gargoyles. Then again, I don't know when the most recent rookery was hatched, so who knows?

Even if it's not a gargbeast pup, it could still just be a small gargbeast. We haven't seen very many gargbeasts at all so far in the series...just Bronx, Boudicca, and that red one at Ishimura (have I forgotten any?). But, given the amount of variation in gargoyle sizes (some as big as Goliath, some as small as Lex), I wouldn't be surprised if there was just as much variation in gargbeast sizes. For all we know, some gargbeasts could be as big as small horses, and some could be as small as cats (Ok...maybe not THAT small...but you get the idea).

Rebel

Whatever Amp is, I don't think it's another gargoyle. It would seem a bit presumptuous to give an unnamed gargoyle a name like that -- a gargoyle should choose his own name. Maybe a nickname.

I'm betting on a gar-beast pup. Or maybe a new laptop. ;)

(Just got my new laptop yesterday...very nice beast. I named it Raven. All my desktops are named after gods, and my laptops and other accessories are demigods.)

Good work, Matt. But you missed one. Maybe... He's reaching for something! It was a lot harder to think of something than I thought.

Anyhow. I'm looking forward to number eight.

Off-topic: I just watched Donnie Darko for the first time. It was mediocre.

Hot-Topic: Apparently my friends saw the Gargoyles T-shirt at the local Hot Topic, and all thought of me. I suppose I'll go to check it out. And mayhaps purchase it.

Noodles, anyone?

So, Lex could be holding an object, a young gargoyle beast, or a young gargoyle. Or he could be holding nothing at all. He could be gliding, or he could just be holding something. Or he could be holding something and gliding. He could be naming an object or a person or giving someone with an existing name a shorter nickname.
This is a fun mystery.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I definitely think he's got something in his arms. Lex does tend to extend his arms when he glides, but never quite straight-forward like that. If that panel is supposed to be a panel of Lex gliding, then I think Hedgecock drew it inaccurately.
Rebel

I might be way off here, but personally I think that Lex has a Gargoyle Beast in his arms when he is making the "Amp" line.
David - [souiofangelus at aol dot com]

In the comic, Lex is gliding with his arms strait out, but if you look at screen caps of him gliding, he glides with his arms sorta out. Check this like out: http://members.aol.com/bellegarg1/Screenshots/GS02/02-019.jpg
And since the London Clan had "lost its way", it is safe to assume that all the members of the clan had names. After all, the Ishimura clan had names.

Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Adam> "But it looks like Lex is holding something when he says "I'll call you Amp"."

I agree with demonskrye. He was probably just gliding. Or maybe it's a really light Gargoyle (scrawnier then Lex) who was injured somehow and Lex was taking him to safety?

"But if it was a person, why would Lex say that he will call it Amp. So whatever he is talking to does not have a name and Lex is giving it a name."

It's quite possible that the possible Gargoyle in that panel simply did not have a name and Lex was just helping him out.

We won't know for sure until #8 comes out, whenever the hell that will be.

The T-shirts I refer to are sold at Hot Topic stores. The person I spoke to said they just got them in thursday, but they aren't avaliable on the website yet. They feature a picture of Goliath on a black background, in flesh, in thinker poser, with the gargoyles logo below him, with a white outline. teh Product code for the XL one is 204930. I saw it in Youth small, small, Medium, large and X-large, which is what is upsetting because I want an XX-large.

Adam> Well, gargoyles traditionally don't have names, so Lex may have been naming one. Just my theory.

And before anyone says "they already have names", we don't know that. Griff, Leo and Una may have been the only ones with names. We know for a long time, Goliath was the only one in his clan with a name.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

But it looks like Lex is holding something when he says "I'll call you Amp". I think that he may be holding the coyote diamond. I went with Doran and Bonnie because both of those names are English.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

London garg names> Well since I've been researching the comedy development of "Gargoyles" for GargWiki, I'm partial to the Amp and Coco theory. If it is the stagoyle who ends up being named Amp, I'm guessing it's because he has a longer, more cumbersome name, since Lex probably wouldn't thrust a name on an unnamed gargoyle or pull one out of his...um, tail. I rather like "Amphitryon", which is the name of Heracles's mortal, non-biological father. Coco I can't think of a good real name for. Maybe something starting with just "Co" or "Ko". Or maybe it is just "Coco". Or "Isa Dora", Coco's predecessor in the comedy development.

Issue #8 is not listed for this week or next as of yet, so it may be a while before we know.

Rebel> Cool idea, something I hadn't considered. My gut feeling is that it's not going to be the case with Katana at the least. I've generally felt that the whole point of putting Brooklyn in feudal Japan was to get him into a situation where female gargoyles are plentiful so he can stop feeling like "I have to go after anything with wings, tail, and a feminine figure" and actually fall in love with someone for who she is. Having Katana come along with him by accident, while it would be extremely interesting, would kind of negate that effect and go back to the "there's only one female gargoyle or gargoyle-like being around" scenario, which would make it tougher to show why it's different for Brooklyn this time. Fu-Dog is a possibility. Greg has said he's extremely loyal to Brooklyn, but that could have developed over time. I think it's quite likely that Fu-Dog doesn't completely understand that by going with Brooklyn, he's embarking on a very long journey and may never see his clan again. (We don't know what year Brooklyn get Fu-Dog from, so it's too early to say whether everyone he knew from the Xanadu clan would be much aged or dead by the time Brooklyn and family return to Manhattan.) It's also possible that Brooklyn may pick up some more passengers we don't know about yet who don't end up coming home with him, and some of them could be unintentional.

D'oh! I had something gnawing in the back of my head and finally realized what it is: Greg did compare the relationship between Brook and Katana to more...uh, volatile pairings. Greg is quoted in this Ask Greg post

http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=7446

"There's conflict. I once described their relationship as Sam & Diane-esque. No one got that, but the intellectual crowd here did understand a Beatrice & Benedick reference. Made me feel old and young, simultaneously."

Huh. How about that? If this pans out, it might make an intersting contrast to the other pairings in Gargoyles, but at the same time, I'd hope it doesn't fall into its own cliches.

Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that either Fu-Dog/Katana ends up timedancing with Brooklyn, quite by accident? i.e. the phoenix gate shows up at just the wrong time, like while they are standing by each other or both crumpled on the ground, injured, and they get whisked away together?

I doubt this is how it will happen, but I always thought it would be extremely interesting if this is how Katana and Brooklyn ended up being mates. Obviously, she'd be furious at him at first for separating her from her clan for all eternity. It'd take months or years, but eventually that hatred/dislike would grow to a grudging respect/friendship, and eventually, love. And, although she'd always miss her clan, she'd be glad to be with Brooklyn and realize that the Phoenix Gate united them for a reason. Blah blah blah. I doubt Greg would have them united in as bizarre a way as this, but I've always thought this would be extremely fresh and awesome.

bluewyvern> True about Bronx, but Bronx already had a clan he'd lived with his entire life. Though he an Boudicca due miss each other, they both had bonds to their respective clans which kept them apart, Bronx continuing to leave with Goliath, Elisa, and Angela on the skiff until he retruened to Manhattan, and Boudicca remaining on Avalon with her clan. Fu-Dog is going to be doing the opposite: leaving the clan he grew up with to travel with one gargoyle (though it's Brooklyn, not another beast). I guess because there are a lot of beasts in the Xanadu clan may be more okay with leaving their clans of birth the way large clans of gargoyles sometimes split and form splinter clans. Nut I can't see him leaving behind both the clan of his birth and a mate. Plus, there is still a definite possibility that Bronx and Boudicca could reunite one or more times, possibly even permanently. If Fu-Dog leaves with Brooklyn and leaves a mate behind, there is virtually no chance that they will ever see each other again. And since like gargoyles, beasts mate for life, that would be the end of mating for both of them.

Also, we know that gargoyle beasts are pretty much considered part of the clan. So while the clan may let Brooklyn take Fu-Dog with him in part as a thank-you for some act of kindness toward the clan, I think the choice is going to be largely Fu-Dog's. It's possible that Brook receives Fu-Dog as an egg, but I like to think that Fu-Dog actively decides to go with Brooklyn and remain devoted to him for the rest of his life.

b - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Fu-Dog: since the Xanadu clan is known not just for having a lot of beasts, but specifically breeding them, I always sort of assumed that Brooklyn was given Fu-Dog as an egg/hatchling, most likely as a gift of thanks or friendship. It never occurred to me that Fu-Dog would be grown and mated.

Remember, though, Bronx has a mate, too, and was willing to be parted from her to stay with his clan.

bluewyvern
"Attend the petty jealousies and angers that prey upon your heart."

Patrick> Doesn't that seem a little overly simple? ;)

Naming> I could see clans, especially in the modern age, developing names without direct human influence. A clan like the London clan is probably subject to a lot of indirect human influence, through books, TV, etc, and I could see younger gargoyles absorbing some of that, maybe to the point of picking out names as the Manhattan clan did.

Katana may have a name when Brooklyn meets her. If tengu were known for teaching humans bushido, they may have had frequent contact with humans in the feudal era in Japan. Tengu may have taken names to make life easier for the humans. Or katana could be an exception to the rule like Goliath. I think it's also going to be interesting to see if there's a particular reason she wields one or more katana when most gargoyles generally don't carry weapons. Did tengu in the feudal period use weapons more often? Did they start learning them so they could more effectively train humans? Or is Katana unique in that respect? Is she maybe compensating for something, the way Hudson's sword helps him compensate for his advanced age?

Fu-Dog's name may not actually be an individual having the name of the species. "Fu-Dog" may be what humans call Chinese gargoyle beasts, but it may not be the gargoyle word for them. It could even be a misunderstanding; "Fu-Dog" could be a very popular name for Chinese garg beasts (assuming they have names), leading humans to the misconception that "Fu-Dog" is the name of the whole species. I'm guessing either Brooklyn gets Fu-Dog before his first mating cycle or Fu-Dog doesn't have a mate (due to early death or unavailability of females), as I'm guessing he wouldn't leave with Brooklyn if he had one.

Greg W has said that the path of the Phoenix Gate through time and locations is like the journey of the skiff; there's a purpose to each stop Brooklyn makes. It may not be as spelled out as the fact that "Avalon sends you where you need to be", but something - a force within the Gate, fate, destiny, divine powers, whatever - is making the Gate's trip through time more purposeful than random. So there's definitely a reason for Brook, Katana, and Fu-Dog ending up in 1978. It could be when Brooklyn drops off Mary and Finella, assuming there's nothing to contradict that. But it could be that the egg itself is the reason. We know that gargoyles are very tied into the biological rhythms of the earth, so it's not unimaginable that it might be difficult - if not impossible - for an egg to hatch outside of a hatching year. (I'm not really taking Avalon into account here, as that involves too much math.) So maybe the Gate had to bring Brooklyn and family to 1978 in order for the egg to hatch.

Matt & Samuel - I have a very simple reason for Greg Weisman putting Nashville's hatching birthday in 1977. It's not just about keeping him age-wise in sinc with other gargoyles around the world, it's about simplicity. Once Nashville returns from timedancing, his biological age will match his chronological age which makes calculating his age simple. Simplicity is a good thing.
dph_of_rules

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Names: To be fair, most names mean something. Matt, for instance comes from Hebrew and means "Gift from God" or some jazz like that. My name (also Hebrew) means "God has heard", or some such. Greg comes from Latin and more or less means friendly. So we've got religious names and names of characteristics. Then there are names like Norman, which comes from a place name. ... I don't really know why I launched into that, but I'm fairly sure my point was that the gargoyles naming practice (thus far) doesn't seem overly different from human traditions. *is a dork* I <3 etymology.

Anyhow...

Hm. Greg did say that Nashville hatched in 1978. I find that odd. Or not really odd, but very coincidental. I mean, Nashville could have hatched at any point in history or in the future (I assume), yet he hatches in the year that he "would have" hatched in in order to be the age he'd be upon joining the Manhattan clan. Odd...

Samuel - [AnglOfHellO at AOL dot com]
Noodles, anyone?

I think the naming of Katana, Fu-Dog, Nashville and Tachi will all be very interesting tales. I also have thought that Nashville will be hatched in Nashville, TN and will receive his name from his parents because it echoes Brook being named after a place. Greg has said that Nash will hatch in 1978, which means he'll be exactly intune with his peers around the world when he returns with Brooklyn (meaning despite his Timedancing, he'll be the same age as all the other gargoyles hatched in 1978). It really makes me wonder what Brook, Fu-Dog and Katana might've been doing in Nashville in 1978.

As for the Loch Ness Clan keeping themselves hidden, keep in mind that Loch Ness is a huge lake and parts of it are largely devoid of much human activity. I'm sure the Loch ness Clan doesn't have too much of a problem hiding. And afterall, if the London Clan can hide for centuries, the Loch Ness Clan shouldn't have a problem.

I have another hypothesis about clans and naming, actually two more.
I think that the only members of the London Clan that use names were the shopkeepers, and they only used names that were very basic and reflected their appearances. This could mean that the two gargoyles seen in #7 have no names and Lex could be naming the male Amp or something.
My other thought is that Brooklyn might've introduced the idea of individual gargoyles using names to the Ishimura Clan. Maybe he was the first garg they met that had a name and took up the idea, starting with Katana. Their names in 1996 are still just names of things (Sora=Sky, Yama=Mountain, etc). It's not like their names are words that are just names (like Matt or Greg or Todd).
In fact, most of the gargs we know about with names are named after places, objects, etc.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]

Loch Ness Clan: It's possible that every time a gargoyle of the clan was spotted, people dismissed it as a seal/otter/other marine animal, or thought it was a Loch Ness Monster.

Clan Ishimura: We do know from "Bushido" that gargoyles of feudal Japan were samurai. So we know a little. (This is me being a smart-alec, apparently)

I'm wondering if the designs of Gargoyles from Ishimura will be consistent with the TV animators' designs (extra/lacking digits), or if they'll match the more "traditional" numbers. (ex: four digits on each limb)

*babbles* I should probably do my homework...

Samuel - [AnglOfHellO at AOL dot com]
Noodles, anyone?

I actually wonder if Katana will even have a name when we first meet her. All the name-using clans that we know of tend to be modern ones who've been interacting with humanity for centuries. Plus we don't really know what the Ishimura Clans relations with the local humans were like in the feudal Japan

While we're on the subject of the international clans, does anyone else here think that the Loch Ness Clan must be super-secretive? Considering that they live in one of the biggest tourist spots on the planet, they must be freaking ninjas to avoid being exposed to humanity for so long. Any ideas on how they manage it?

That is all I will say.

Matt > I do not disagree with you. I don't necessarily outright agree, but that's definitely sound logic and probably a good possibility.

There are other possibilities, however.

Maybe Fu-Dog's real name is something lengthy, or difficult to pronounce, and Fu-Dog is a nickname. Or, maybe Brooklyn gets Fu-Dog when Fu-Dog is REALLY young, and he doesn't have a name yet.

I tend to think that if naming arose naturally within a gargoyle clan, they probably wouldn't arbitrarily assign names at birth/hatching the way humans do--I've always felt they'd wait a little while and give that hatchling a name that actually FIT that individual. I have NO basis whatsoever for this assumption, but nonetheless I thought I'd share.

(Well...I suppose I do have SOME basis--Katana, Nashville, and Tachi's names. We know Katana will wield katanas, and I'm betting Tachi will use tachis. Somehow I doubt Katana and Brooklyn just randomly decided to call their firstborn "Nashville"--it is probably where he was hatched/conceived, or maybe has something to do with his personality).

Anyway, like I said, I don't disagree, I'm just throwing out some other possibilities.

A random prediction: The Xanadu Clan does not use names. Their isolation from humanity tends to support their more traditional ways and besides, why would Fu-Dog be named Fu-Dog. That is like Brooklyn returning from his Timedance and his mate being named Tengu. I think Brook or someone gave Fu-Dog his name after he joined Brook. I don't think he was named by the Xanadu Clan, and that leads me to think the Xanadu Clan as a whole doesn't use names.

GREB B.> I agree with your list of best pics except:

All About Eve (aweful)
Casablanca (One of my favs)
On the Waterfront (Terrific)
Godfather (Terriffic)
Godfather II (Terriffic)
Annie Hall (Terrible)
Gandhi (Exceptional)
Shakespeare In Love (robbed Private Ryan)
American Beauty (Great)
Return of the King (terriffic)
The Departed (Terriffic)

And Dances With Wolves... did you see it? WAY better than Goodfellas. (Although, I will admit that I love Goodfellas.)

I was Pulling for Johnny Depp. But Day-Lewis was Brilliant, and so was Javier Bardem.

Congrats to the Coens, as well.
