Brainiac> I didn't really dig 12 as a game, so I never finished it nor do I really feel any attachment to Balthier. Never played A2, so I barely know who Luso is.

Harlan Phoenix> I can understand that. Ivalice as a whole already has enough timeline issues that throwing Luso and Balthier in as cameos just made things worse. However, they were both fun to play as (Luso as a "second Ramza" and Balthier...well, he needs no explanation).

Brainiac> War of the Lions pissed me off. I wasn't fond of Square trying to shoehorn the original Tactics into their wider Ivalice Alliance continuity.

I too have played Earthbound as well as Mother 3. Both games even come close to being my favorite RPG (My main favorites are the miscellaneous Pokemon games with my top favorites being Dragon Quest 4 and 5).

lvl27_cubone, you should play FFT: The War of the Lions if you have a PSP. It's a much better localization, more in keeping with the pseudo-Shakespearean nature of the various games set in Ivalice (FF12 and Vagrant Story in particular), not to mention the quite good VA work and the added cooperative missions.

Off topic, but it SNOWED!! I'm from Louisiana and this is my first year living in North Carolina, so I'm not accustomed to snow. If anyone wants to see my video of me trying to sled down my driveway, click my name.

Hello everyone! I am Oggy, one of the conbook leads for Califur. A California Furry convention. Yes, I know that furries are slightly different than the Gargoyle fandom, but one of our art guests this year is one of your own. Kythera of Anevern.

Being that the first fandom I was in was the Gargoyle fandom, I was sad to see the Gatherings ending. So I offer this to you, Califur will be hosting this Gargoyle based artist and a way for gargoyle fans to gather once again to the Southern California area. If you need further information plase feel free to contact me or visit the Califur website.

TODD> Child labour laws were obviously very lenient back in the day. ;)

Of course we don't now in what capacity Quincy worked when he first started at the White House, it was probably something very humble. Maybe his mom was a maid on he helped her out at work.

Algernon

I think you might be right about that statement Paul, I'm also a fan of underground faves, there's a lot of stuff I like that I believe deserves a ton of notoriety. I'm a huge fan of the mother series, as well as some of the lesser known RPG's, Final Fantasy Tactics I'm actually playing while typing this (although FF isn't exactly far from mainstream, the original tactics is fairly oddball) and really old stuff like games by Treasure (that company can do no wrong, I swear. Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Bangai-O, amazing games) and I do have a fair bit of knowledge about stuff like Marvel characters, which most often people claim to have, but completely don't. Fans of the Transformers films (specifically the atrocity that is Transformers 2) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine are a budding example here.

I love being into stuff like that, it give me a chance to try to expose people to it (and I'm usually very blunt about it as well. I'm STILL egging on a friend of mine to watch Gargoyles, and I'm practically gonna force another. I get very focused on stuff I like :D )

I spotted a peculiar answer in today's "Ask Greg". Greg mentioned that Quincy Hemings was born in 1900. In the comic book, Hemings says that he joined the White House staff when Theodore Roosevelt was president. Teddy Roosevelt was president from 1901 to early 1909, so Hemings would have been nine at most by the end of his second term, surprisingly young to be working at the White House.

Of course, child labor laws were probably laxer back then and we don't know what kind of work Hemings did when he began working at the White House. Or maybe Hemings was lying about when he joined the White House staff. Still, when the "Ask Greg" queue opens up again, I'll ask Greg Weisman about that.

Todd Jensen

I think I know who you're talking about; I've played the Quest for Glory games myself. I'd say more about that, but I'd have to name names.

I guess Gargoyles fans do seem to like other less popular (or downright underrated) movies, TV shows, and video games. Or maybe it's just that I like Gargoyles, Earthbound, and Quest for Glory and don't care much if they aren't popular.

Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

Brainiac: I have played 5, and seen a playthough of 4, though it's been a while. I actually played 5 before seeing any of the others (though we did have 1 back in the 90's, but never beat it). Speaking of that character, even though I didn't know who she was at the time I played it, I'm glad they made a return in 5, cause what happens to them in 4 was just...cheap.
Andrea - [SailorV77 at yahoo dot com]

Hey Patrick, not all of Southern Ohio is rural. The southwestern part, particularly in the Indiana-Kentucky-Ohio tri-state, is fairly metropolitan. Cincinnati may not be New York, but it's not the boonies, either. Southeast Ohio, however, has a lot of small cities and towns that are nowhere near heavily urbanized. Frankly though, I can see Maggie as coming from anywhere in the state.

Something I've been meaning to ask here for a few days - anybody here ever played the Quest for Glory games? There's a specific character in the fourth and fifth games that I think is quite relatable to Demona. Greg B's. recent blog posts about Demona kick-started my memory. The interesting thing about this character is that the fourth game's characterization has much in common with Demona while the fifth's rings quite a bit like most Demona fanfic (though a touch more justified).

Brainiac - [OSUBrainiac at gmail dot com]
There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

I feel quite sheepish about that question about Demona now... By the time Puck put the spell on her, she had already been living with the Weird Sisters' immortality spell for centuries. Even before "The Mirror," Demona couldn't have died of starvation or exhaustion.

Unless it was Macbeth who was starving or exhausting her, which I don't think is possible.

Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

Since Todd posted some quite a bit of times, I thought I'd take a stab at a creativity demon. When talking about how many Garg fics simplify the characters, an example used is how Demona will actually have holiday dinners (or just plain dinners anyway) with the clan. Here's ultimately why such a thing would not turn out well even if it did happen:

Angela- Isn't it nice to be having a regular dinner, like a family.

Broadway- (trying to help Angela) It's great.

Demona- (with a small, but evil smirk on her face) So Goliath, have you had your way with anymore humans lately?

Angela- MOTHER! Let's try to be more civilized.

Brooklyn- So Demona, attempted anymore genocidal plots against humanity lately?

This is why a dinner with Demona and the clan couldn't work.

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]
Algernon's comment about Norman Osborn: One of the neat things about Dark Reign is that it gives Osborn the chance to expand his horizons beyond tormenting a twenty nine year old who still lives with his mom.

@Todd They might just have. Perhaps that was what started the human fear of Gargoyles. Who knows.

Well thanks to some gift certificates, I finally got Clan building V.2 and Bad Guys. I thought they were both excellent and I am very happy that[SPOILER] The Timedancer story was started in this volume, and I am even more happy that Katana and the rest of the "family" was introduced, if only in a few panels. After only having Sata (ick..) for so long, it was nice to see the real deal.

It now also makes sense to me why Demona confronted Brooklyn and tried to get him on her side in "Temptation." Perhaps she thought that she could perhaps change history in her favor by getting to him before he started traveling through time. [/SPOILER]

Sorry if this has all been discussed before...I am always late to the party I suppose :/.

In case anyone didn't notice, Ask Greg includes the happy news that MECHA-NATION #1 is available for ordering in the February Previews. If you want it, now is the time to go put in a order with your local comics shop. I would not count on them ordering shelf copies if no one asks about it. They might, but they also might not.

Magic is a form of energy. Who says it doesn't obey the laws of physics? Who says any of the laws of physics as they relate to magic have been discovered?

I would imagine Demona eats, too... just like any other animal on the planet.

Todd > The southern half of the state is more rural. Maggie struck me as not very cosmopolitan, but she's not Amish. Therefore, odds are good she's not from any of the major Ohio cities or from the Northeast part of the state bordering Pennsylvania.

Patrick

Uh oh.

1. Does Demona absorb thermal energy while in human form, the way other gargoyles absorb thermal energy while in "stone" form?
2. If not, how has Demona adapted?

Greg responds...
1. Nope.
2. Magic.

Does that mean that magic doesn't obey the laws of thermodynamics?

I was born in Ohio - the town of Chagrin Falls, to be precise (which is a real town, believe it or not. I read some years ago that "Third Rock from the Sun" was originally going to be set in Chagrin Falls, but the execs decided that nobody in the audience would believe that there really was a place with that name).

So what's significant about the southern part of Ohio, Patrick?

Speaking of "Legion", I remember that one of my biggest thrills when watching the early Season Two episodes for the first time was when the names "Desdemona" and "Iago" appeared in the ending credits for that one. I wasn't certain whether I'd seen them there or not, but I hoped I had, and was delighted to have it confirmed when I discovered "Gargoyles" sites on the Internet over a year later. Since then, I continue to delight every time more Shakespearean elements enter "Gargoyles" (Falstaff and his gang of thieves in "Bad Guys" most recently).
Todd Jensen

Well, I ended up chatting for a lot longer than I intended and started a bit late. I managed to get through "Leader of the Pack", "Metamorphosis", and "Legion". I forgot that all that major stuff came so early in season 2. It's interesting how much stuff happened so early, I thought it took longer to get to stuff such as Derek's mutation into Talon and the Coldstone ordeal. Then again, Iago and Desdemona do get separated in to Coldfire and Coldsteel later on, but I thought the virus part was a lot later in the season. Seeing these episodes again brings back memories. :)

I was a bit surprised when "Leader of the Pack" started, mainly in the changes between seasons 1 and 2. The animation is quite a bit different, the characters are more definite, which I really liked, and the overall feel of the show is more mature than the first season. I noticed that for the most part, Goliath and Hudson are about the same as season 1, which is fine, but the trio got a bit of an adjustment. Brooklyn's a bit more assertive but cool-headed, Broadway's cockier, and Lex is more restless. Bronx is, well, Bronx, which is just fine. I'm enjoying him more than I used to. :P

Xanatos kept his cunning, but he seems much more hostile. Fox got a bit more fleshed out as well, but she hasn't had much screen time yet, just what's in the first episode.

It's been a long time since I got to see all this stuff, so it's a nice flashback. Can't wait to get to more of it tomorrow.

I'm looking for a beta-reader for a friend's Gargoyle fic. I've tried the usual message boards, but no luck.

I hate to ask the group, but I don't feel qualified since I've only seen what I can on Toon Disney a long time ago. If there are any takers, contact me at the above e-mail.

Thank you.

I live way in the North East, not sure if anyone who frequents here lives within a few hundred miles of me, lol.

But speaking of being a small world, on the shuttle on my way to the 09 Gathering, a girl we shared it with had just flown in from China. Our planes had left from opposite ends of the globe (literally) to the same airport, and we find out that out homes are a mere 20 minutes away from each other.

Andrea - [SailorV77 at yahoo dot com]

Aww, I was gettin' excited for a minute, would be kinda cool to meet some of you guys one here. No more gatherings = thumbs down. Oh well.

On the bright side, I started a sketch challenge for myself, 99 drawings in the next month or so. Knocked two out tonight (One of them being Puck, I'm doing 99 different characters. At least 27 of them will be from Gargoyles), and I'm gonna go grab a bite, and watch the first 5 episodes of season 2 before heading for bed.

BISHANSKY - In the first panel, a conventional-looking gargoyle was perched on a stone roof with the caption "GARGOYLE: Protector of Cathedrals". In the second, a gargoyle-like creature was standing on a tiled roof with palm trees in the background, carrying a golf bag and wearing an odd-looking sleeveless jacket; the caption read "GARGYLE: Protector of Country Clubs."

I know he lives in the Eyrie building, I didn't think the castle itself was where he lived. I just thought he stuck it there to wake the clan.

Does the sky need a name? Does the river?

<<Well, yeah. The point I was making is that he probably didn't visit the castle as often as when the clan was there.>>

You do know that Xanatos lives in the castle, right?

Greg Bishansky

Well, yeah. The point I was making is that he probably didn't visit the castle as often as when the clan was there. He probably wasn't as concerned about it being maintained since there wasn't too much happening up there. As I said, it's just a theory. In all honesty, I'm sure the real reason is because there wasn't a big obligation to maintain the continuity to the point where they'd draw or paint shards in every episode. That being said, I think it's fun to speculate about little stuff like that regardless of the real reason, and come up with ways to incorporate errors and oversights into the actual continuity of the show. :D One of the fun aspects of fandom ;)
lvl27_cubone
Does the sky need a name? Does the river?

I guess what I meant is, there are a few people who don't really discuss so much as nitpick. And that's fine, they have a right to. Personally, I think the answers are right there if they stop to think it over, but that's just me.

The gargoyles, and later Thailog, lived at the castle for a little while. There have probably been thousands of stone shards, and yes, maybe one of them was missed and Jon got lucky. Or not.

But, what it comes down to first is that I tend to think Xanatos chose Hudson for the experiment for a reason, in fact, I know he did. He so much as said so in the episode itself.

As for the final test of the cauldron. Yes, Xanatos could have picked up a lab rat, maybe he was going to. But, Owen almost seemed to be itching to prove his worth in service, and just dipped his fist in there without being told to, and before anyone could even tell him not to. Now, granted, he's really Puck, so they may have taken Owen for granted... but I doubt they could have foreseen Oberon banishing and de-powering him later.

<<1, Xanatos didn't maintain the castle for a long time, since the clan wasn't there anymore.>>

Why wouldn't Xanatos maintain his own home? It's a big castle, there's a lot of wind at that altitude. Something as small and light as a single piece of stone skin can easily be missed.

Greg Bishansky

For a show that's 13 years old, there's bound to be some nitpicking at some point, what else is there to talk about after that long? :P

I'm not sure this would be a logical answer, as I don't remember whether or not the clan would be back at the castle at this point, but my theory is that after they left the castle in season 1, Xanatos didn't maintain the castle for a long time, since the clan wasn't there anymore. That might account for the shards in question, but I'm not sure if this would be an accurate theory, it's been too long since I've seen that part of the show.

I agree that we're in need of a change of subject, and for lack of a better subject, I would like to bring up one of the recent "Ask Greg" entries, about the Cauldron of Life and stone skin.

[quote] Daniel writes...
(snip)
On the subject of stone skin, why weren't there any skin shards lying around from all the times the Gargoyles had awakened at the castle? I seem to recall an episode where someone assumed an identity to get to the castle and he found a skin shard (unless, of course, that was from season 3).

Greg responds...
(snip)
As for the skin shards, most had been cleared away, cleaned up, etc. It wasn't anticipated that they might be useful.[/quote]

Now, I know that Jon Canmore (under the alias Jon Carter) did in fact pick up a piece of stone skin from the floor of Castle Wyvern in "Hunter's Moon" (Part Two, I think), which Owen suspected had been left behind by one of the gargoyles "a year ago." I'm having some difficulty reconciling that with Greg's response, unless Xanatos' cleanup crew had missed a spot and Jon was simply lucky.

Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

Purplegoldfish> I just want to clear the air here. Honestly, I'm sincerely glad that you weren't offended, although it's hard to tell. I honestly would like to see you stick around, I enjoy any sort of activity on here, and in any community, so long as it doesn't get to the point where people are tirelessly screaming back and forth, and that's totally not the case here. I don't think there was anything wrong with us apologizing for what we mistook for you taking offense. Would you rather have us not apologize if you were offended? I'm just saying, I think you should relax a bit. I certainly meant no harm, I just wanted to give my input.

However, I do see where the majority of your frustration comes from. You had an opinion that differed a lot from the majority, and as a result, everyone started commenting on it. I can see how that would make you uncomfortable. Heck, I'd prefer it if people over-analyzed just how incredibly similar my perspective is on the sculpt, just to take the attention off of you and give you a chance to cool off. Make no mistake, I'm not being sarcastic here. I really do think you got a bit more heat than you deserved, but both sides were at fault. There's nothing wrong with having an opinion, I totally agree. I do think you got a bit too riled up about the whole thing, but that's just my opinion. I just think everyone should relax, and promptly change the subject.

As for the rest of the room, I hope I'm not overstepping my place when I say this, I think it'd be in everyone's best interest that we just drop the whole thing and move on. There's not too much of a reason to keep droning on about it in circles. Besides, it's pretty silly when you think about how much arguing has gone on about it. No one's right, no one's wrong. We have different perspectives. The end.

Now then, moving on,...

Didn't get a chance to start up season 2 tonight like I had planned, but I'll try again for tomorrow. A friend of mine has been keeping up and watched the first 2 episodes, and I'm pretty stoked that he's sticking with it and watching the series again. :)

There is plenty of religious imagery in Gargoyles; I think anyone who would be offended by the sight of Goliath holding onto a cross would have objected, for example, to the use of religious sites by Demona in "Temptation," "Sanctuary," and "Hunter's Moon."
Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

Just wanted to give a heads up to other fans of Gargoyles. A few friends and I started a retro-themed video game podcast a few months ago. One regular feature is for each of us to talk about a "Game of the Week" for each show. My pick this week was Gargoyles for the Sega Genesis. I wrote up a piece about the game and the series in general at:

http://www.theretroleague.freeforums.org/post168.html#p168

Or just click my name. I also uploaded the original production featurette from the VHS movie to Youtube. That link is in the forum post I linked to. Hope I didn't mess this up. I really wanted to advertise Gargoyles any way I could. Hopefully, this will get people looking at the series.

Nickerous

Oh for crying out loud. I wish people would stop throwing the word "offended" around. I NEVER SAID I WAS OFFENDED. I don't want to decorate my living space with religious imagery, no matter how "innocent." THAT'S MY PEROGATIVE. I would happily accept the statue as a gift on account that it Gargoyles related, but I wouldn't spend my money on it. It's not like I'm telling anyone else NOT to buy it. I don't think I should come in here for awhile, it's upsetting me and I don't need this.
Purplegoldfish

I should be starting season 2 tonight. :)

lvl27-cubone
Does the sky need a name? Does the river?

Oh crud, everyone ignore that last post!
Algernon

I'd probably be more understanding towards those who object to the cross on the statue if I thought for a second that the artist was deliberately trying to make some-kind of religious statement. The statue just happens to depict Goliath perched on a steeple and holding the cross for support.

I'm guessing the artist probably choose the steeple because they thought it would look all Gothic and cool, plus the real world association between gargoyles and churches.

Is there a possibility that someone may be offended by it? Of course there is, heck it's practically a certainty that every book, tv show, statue or cereal box ever created has offended some one. The world is filled with countless people who spend their every waking minute actively looking for things to be offended by. They're addicted to the artificial feeling of moral superiority it provides, and they don't care if their outrage has no logical or justifiable base.

Believe me, they could issue a statue of Owen quietly sitting at his desk doing a crossword puzzle and somebody somewhere would find an excuse to throw a hissy fit about it. That's why to only rational response is to ignore these idiots.

Today is Robert Burns' birthday, one of Scotland's best-known poets. I wonder whether the Manhattan clan would take any notice of that. Burns was after their time, of course, but so were other writers whom they've taken an interest in, such as Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky. On the other hand, as Demonskrye pointed out, they don't seem to identify that much with Scotland's human culture or politics. (Though I remember a creativity demon I once had about the trio deciding to try out the caber toss - and unfortunately, the caber accidentally lands on Brendan and Margot's car. Fortunately, the yuppies aren't in it at the time, but get a nasty shock when they come back and find that huge wooden trunk lying on its remains - and then the trio show up to say "Can we have our caber back?" If that had happened, Brendan and Margot had better hope it was after "The Journey", when the repair shop and the auto insurance company would be more likely to accept their story about gargoyles being responsible for the damage.)
