I sort of wonder how a gargoyle clan would live in Mystic Falls from "The Vampire Diaries."

Yes, I'm a grown man and I watch that. Shut up! You still watch "Gargoyles!"

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

I was gonna ask Greg a couple of questions when it is open again, but I will run them through the comment room first. So here goes:

1. Do the Pukhan, Loch Ness, and New Olympian clans have beasts?
2. Do beasts out number Gargoyles in the Xanadu clan?
3. What percent of worlwide beasts as of 1996 reside in the Xanadu clan?

Any answers would be nice.

Also, have any of you ever watched a show called Dual Survival. Every time I watch it, I wonder if/how a gargoyle clan could have lived there.

Adam - [carl006_1999@yahoo.com]

As suspected, the Ask Greg queue was shut down because new Young Justice episodes were pushed back and that was the original reason for opening the queue back up. Once YJ episodes are airing it'll open back up.

And happy day-late birthday to the Keith David, voice of Goliath for TV's Gargoyles and one-time opponent of Rowdy Roddy Piper. I hear Roddy sent Keith his last package of bubble gum.

Gorebash

Greg: Ah, I get it now . . . didn't realize that Gore had the power to automate the queue-gate ahead of time d:

ARLO> <<1. Why did Gillecomgain refuse to kill Macbeth when Duncan ordered him to? He doesn't seem to have been a particularly moral guy. Was he just concerned with protecting the Hunter's image among the populace? If so, then why didn't he have a problem killing Macbeth's father?>>

Macbeth was Gillecomgain's insurance against Duncan trying to get rid of him. Macbeth was an heir to the crown, popular. Gille was essentially blackmailing Duncan. If word got out that Duncan ordered the murder if Findlaech, it would have severely weakened him and maybe affected his claim to the throne.

<<2. Was there any off-screen tension between Broadway and the rest of the clan after they thought Elisa had died in Hunter's Moon, Part 3, given that Broadway was the one who had brought Elisa there against Goliath's orders?>>

Probably not, they had other things on their mind, like tracking down the Hunters, and they soon learned Elisa was alive anyway.

I think they were focusing their anger at the Hunters anyway.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-By-Fours]
"Cartman gets ten million dollars and Michael Bay gets to keep making movies. There isn't a God." -Kyle

1. Why did Gillecomgain refuse to kill Macbeth the second time when Duncan ordered him? I think that aside from hunting Gargoyles, Gillecomgain was largely retired. He was 50 years old (quite old in 11th century terms) and had stewardship of Castle Moray. He had "arrived", so to speak and probably didn't want to jeopardize that.

2) I think all the gargoyles were blaming themselves of Elisa's supposed death. Broadway for taking her there. Brooklyn for being second in command and not keeping Broadway there. Angela for being Elisa's friend and not convincing her to stay. Lexington for coming up the way to track the Hunters. Hudson for not using his wisdom in succeeding to get Goliath to abandon the vendetta. And Goliath knocked Jason into Elisa causing them both to fall off the dam. It was an accident, but he was responsible for knocking her off the dam.

Richard Jackson

Arlo>
1. Probably for the reasons he stated. Murdering Macbeth would result in too many questions.

2. I'd say the tension was between the clan and Goliath, but as for why Broadway was the one to bring her. The two have become close friends since Deadly Force, so it was probably easy to persuade Broadway to take her to the fight.

But I'm not 100% on these, so if anyone else wants to give the questions a try, go ahead.

Interesting. Maybe I'll just ask the third one, then.

How about this one:
1. Why did Gillecomgain refuse to kill Macbeth when Duncan ordered him to? He doesn't seem to have been a particularly moral guy. Was he just concerned with protecting the Hunter's image among the populace? If so, then why didn't he have a problem killing Macbeth's father?

2. Was there any off-screen tension between Broadway and the rest of the clan after they thought Elisa had died in Hunter's Moon, Part 3, given that Broadway was the one who had brought Elisa there against Goliath's orders?

Also, if you check #10 and #11, Maol Chalvim didn't seem overly fond of gargoyles either. He certainly thought Katharine was "daft" for caring about the eggs in "Avalon Part One."

And since he was Duncan's grandfather, and he chose Duncan to succeed him to the throne, I think he helped influence Duncan's views here, or found that Duncan's outlook matched his.

Just noticed "The Stand" is available on Netflix.

Aside from it being a great use of 6 hours of relax time, there's 3 gargoyles players who have major roles in it.

Heyward

Arlo>

I'll give your first two questions a shot.

1. Why does Duncan hate gargoyles so much? Well, the Middle Ages or Dark Ages were not particularly enlightening time. As Goliath says, "Superstition and the sword ruled". With their sometimes demonic appearance and the fact they weren't human led to much animosity. Also, before the events in the show and in vol. 2 of the comics, gargoyles were known to have twice before made alliances with gargoyle friendly nobles. Duncan knew that their contribution was a deciding factor in battles.

2. Why does Duncan hate Macbeth so much? Even before the Weird Sisters prophecy, Duncan knew that Macbeth was very popular. Gillecomgain even cites this as a reason when he declines to kill Macbeth for Duncan.

Richard Jackson - [rickymtj@yahoo.com]

I haven't seen this in the archives, but I just wanted to double check if anyone knew whether it's been asked before I submit it to Ask Greg.

1. Why did Duncan hate gargoyles so much? I understand Greg has said he became the Hunter for power, but his hatred of gargoyles seems to go beyond that. Recall the scene in the flashback in "City of Stone, Part 3" right after Macbeth saves his life on the mountainside. Duncan is grateful and saying how this dispells any doubts about his loyalty, and then he gets all offended as soon as Macbeth begs him to spare Demona's life.

2. Why does Duncan hate Macbeth so much? I understand a lot of the conspiring he did was to gain the crown, but his resentment towards Macbeth seems to go beyond that. Even after Macbeth seemingly has no chance of becoming king, Duncan still orders his love to marry the man who killed his father, and notice how happy he is when Macbeth walks out upset at the wedding. And in that same scene on the hilltop, recall his line "Yes, well, *some* cousins are not that close." It seems like he's always viewed Macbeth as an enemy, for some reason, whereas Macbeth seems like he's always loved his cousin.

3. Was there any literary significance of the way Duncan (Macbeth's enemy) contrasts with Xanatos (Goliath's enemy)? Xanatos, by contrast also conspires and manipulates to get what he wants, but he doesn't hold grudges. Were you deliberately trying to contrast the two villains for any reason?

Arlo

It started out being used as a sarcastic response to a forum post that is paragraphs of text long. Goliath & the Illuminati: After the Hotel Cabal, you can bet he's not going to be fond of them, of course, that's no surprise to anybody here, hehe. I'd be curious which member(s) of the Illuminati in New York -- Xanatos, Matt, Castaway, Thailog, Shari, and Hacker -- will actually make an offer for membership.

I guess Matt would be the most likely choice for the Society to give that assignment to, given Goliath's current trust of the guy. Plus, they know Goliath is at least aware of his "association" with the Illuminati (not necessarily his current membership, of course).

Cartoons: Ooh, good thing I read those today, I just remembered a new South Park's on tonight d:

So, while picking up Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers #7, I got a hunch. Now, the comic shop I frequent in Phoenix constantly touts that it has hundreds and hundreds of back issues. Frankly, beyond picking up Greg's Flash Thompson story in Amazing Spider-Man more than a year after its release, I've never really ever FULLY considered the possibilities, having only bought comics when the first Gargoyles SLG comic came out back in 2006.

Well long story short, today I just blew the dust off a mint case of self-indulgence. That's right: Greg Weisman's "Flashback of Notre Dame" in JLA's Showcase #1 from February 2000. Next time I go, I really should consider checking out what they got in the Captain Atom boxes ;)

Particularly given the sheer breadth of the connections he bridged over the course of the World Tour.>>

I've theorized about this a while ago. Let's look at where the Illuminati members in Manhattan that we know of currently are. They're tightening around Goliath from various angles like a noose.

I do think the current goal with the Manhattan Clan is to recruit Goliath.

Since people are putting suggestions of "toons" hate that word for all purposes the animated series and or "anime's" mentioned are so adult themed and just good. I would suggest Fullmetal Alchemist either Brotherhood or the original all the I prefer brotherhood. If you want to go back to like around the time Gargoyles came out you can not go wrong with Neon Genesis Evangelion all the some people is love and hate with Eva. Deathnote and Code Geas are also worth checking out. These are all anime's but some of the best examples of the genre.

Cowboy Bebop is certainly a good show, but I don't like it as much as others. I think the main reason is that it's so episodic, and I prefer longer story arcs. While it has a lot of good episodes, the only ones I really love are the ones with Vicious. Anyway, that's just a difference of opinion. While we're on the subject of anime, my recommendation would be Trigun. It's very western (as in Old West cowboys) themed, but it's actually sci-fi, set on a desert planet. The first half is hilarious, and Vash the Stampede is one of the most endearing heroes ever, but the second half of the series gets a lot more dramatic and deep. The show has some of the best fight animation ever, very well-developed characters, and a lot of thematic depth as it goes on. Basically, it's about competing philosophies of survival, and whether sins can be justified by a good cause. Is it acceptable to take a life to save a life? Is it right to kill a spider to save a butterfly? All this gets explored through the characters. It's also one of the few shows I know of with a non-killing hero that actually faces up to the implications of such a code. Far too often, such stories cop-out, for instance Spider-Man refuses to kill a villain too dangerous to leave alive, so the villain is conveniently killed by something else. But Trigun doesn't let Vash off that easy, and when you finally see the results of his actions, it's downright heartbreaking.

To sum up: Trigun: twenty-six episodes of perfection. Definitely worth a watch.

I was reading a book that I'd just bought from a used bookstore today, in which one of the main characters is on a boat called the "Okishuri Maru" - which immediately reminded me of the "Otoshiana Maru" where the gargoyles and the Pack have their big showdown in "Leader of the Pack". Does anybody know what "Maru" stands for in Japanese? That word appearing in two Japanese boat names (if both fictional) got my attention. (The captain of the ship in the book, by the way, was named "Sato". And the book was published in 1979, so this couldn't have been a "Gargoyles" hommage.)

I'm looking for all sorts of suggestions. I somewhat learn towards the action/drama toons, but I am certainly not ruling out comedies. What's important to me is that it's good, and that there are plenty of episodes out already. I have a lot of free time on my hands this summer so I figured I'd have some personal cartoon marathons.
