Arlo> Maybe I'll check it out sometime when I'm done watching every episode of Star Trek: TNG.

King Cobra & RJ> I remember that episode of DS9. It's a must-see, even for a novice fan. For most of the episode, they just put the DS9 actors into the scenes of the original episodes. It was made right after Forest Gump came out, and they were amazed with the ability to put actors back into the footage from the original episodes. It really is amazing what they were able to do, considering they were a TV series and not a movie. I'd say judging strictly by how they putting characters into old footage, it beats Gump any day.

Arlo> "I detest Twilight, and I wouldn't be a grown man who watches a teen vampire soap opera if I could help it."

Boy, I hear ya. I'm also a grown man who doesn't understand that popularity and has no desire to. Even if it has 'thriller stuff'.

Spen> "I've had a hard time getting into any post-Buffy vampire stuff."

Same here, with the exception of Angel, Season 5.

Richard Jackson> "Charlie Brill who played Arne Darvin in the classic Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" reprised his role 29 years later for an episode of DS9 "Trials and Tribble-ations"

Interesting bit of trivia, that. From a novice Trekkie to a major fan, thanks for that. :)

Spen> Really? I never had a problem with the dialogue. But I agree, some of what goes on is too soap opera-ey. I guess they had to keep it that way to attract the teenage girls, who are probably the network's primary target. I don't watch it for that, I watch it for the thriller stuff.
I thought this was interesting. All the way back in 2009, when Greg was working on Spectacular Spider-Man, someone was asking him about villains he couldn't use and he flippantly answered with some DC villains and Darth Vader. But 4 of the villains he mentioned later became memember of The Light. I guess The Light was a glint in his eye back then.
SPEN (re your quote) - Not in this case.

Arlo : I tried to get into it, but the dialogue was too over-the-top and soap opera-ey for my tastes. I've had a hard time getting into any post-Buffy vampire stuff.

"The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is often difficult to determine whether or not they are genuine." - Abraham Lincoln

Never Say Never Again contractually, HAD to be a remake of Thunderball. Connery wanted to make his own Bond film, and thus the judge allowed it this way. No Q, different M, No Monneypenny, no opening gun barrel, no "Bond" theme. Yes it was a remake, and Connery was already WAAAAAYYYY too old to be the suave ladies man. The story starts with Bond failing a test; M states that he is out of shape (hinting at Connery's age.) Had they all the stuff they were missing, it MIGHT have passed as a Bond film. Really, they only thing holding it up as a Bond film is Connery being called James Bond throughout the picture. Really, they shouldn't have use the name "Bond" and called home something else. Doing so would have eliminated the comparisons to the "real" Bond films, and the need for Q, the Bond Theme, Etc. 1.5/5

I Watched all 485 Best Picture nominees I'n 365 days! Go me!

So as I've mentioned once or twice on here before, I am an avid Vampire Diaries fan. The show anyway, not the books, which makes it even more pathetic. I detest Twilight, and I wouldn't be a grown man who watches a teen vampire soap opera if I could help it. But it's just so addicting.

Anyway, I have to say I'm surprised more Garg fans aren't into it. It does have some similarities, such as the element of something traditionally scary being the protector, a cocky, always in control villain who has something of a good side in him, and periodic flashbacks to various periods in history. I'm surprised more Garg fans aren't hooked.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

KingCobra>It's been years since I've seen the Bond films. I seem to recall that he did OK, but Never Say Never Again is just a remake of Thunderball.

Another one: Charlie Brill who played Arne Darvin in the classic Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" reprised his role 29 years later for an episode of DS9 "Trials and Tribble-ations"

And all this talk about Star Wars...there's at least a half-dozen references to Star Wars in the Gargoyles canon. Perhaps that should have its own page on the Gargwiki?

Richard Jackson

Harvester> Tell me about it. Never could get into the original 'Gattaca' either.
KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra582@gmail.com]
Grr. Arg.

King Cobra: Given how many years have passed, I'm not sure any of the cast from the original could reprise their roles. Frankly, I think it might be fun to see one or two of them in a completely different role. Like when they remade "Battlestar Galactica," they had Richard Hatch (who played Captain Apollo in the original) in the new cast as a recurring character, who was a complete 180 from the character he played in 1978. Honestly, his character in the remake was more interesting, but then again, most things are more interesting than the original "Galactica."

Richard Jackson> Not much of a Bond fan. How was Mr. Connery's performance after 12 years?
KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra582@gmail.com]
Grr. Arg.

Greg B> I meant "amazing" in that so much time passed and he was able to reprise his role. I'm agnostic about McDiarmid's acting ability.

I thought of another example: Sean Connery playing Bond in "Never Say Never Again." 12 years had passed since he had played Bond in "Diamonds are Forever."

Richard Jackson

Greg B> "But then I think "Jedi" and the prequels are four of the worst movies to ever disgrace the entire medium of film, so what do I know?"

Absolutely, especially the prequels. Episode 1 had a decent amount of quality action/light-saber battle scenes, but aside from that, it was crap. Episode 2 didn't feel like a true SW film 85% of the time, and episode 3 falls under the same trap of episode 1.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra582@gmail.com]
Grr. Arg.

RICHARD JACKSON> Ian MacDiarmid's acting performance was many things.... amazing is not one of the words I would use to describe it.

But then I think "Jedi" and the prequels are four of the worst movies to ever disgrace the entire medium of film, so what do I know?

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
Elisa Maza, why don't you just take that "sodie pop" can and stick the straw right into New York's eye!

"The most amazing role reprisals I can think of in the business are Alan Hale Sr. who played Little John in three separate Robin Hood films (1922, 1938, and 1950) and Ian McDiarmid who played Palpatine as a younger man in the Star Wars prequels about 15 years after he played the role in Return of the Jedi."

Well, these aren't as 'amazing', but I can think of a couple of cases. Lynn Lowry, who was in the original 'The Crazies' is also seen in the remake, riding her bike in the street in one scene. Also, Jimmy Hunt, who played 'David MacLean' in the 1953 version of 'Invaders From Mars' shows up as a cop in the 1986 remake.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra582@gmail.com]
Grr. Arg.

King Cobra> I think they have the same chance of reprising their roles as "Young Justice" actors Miguel Ferrer and Rob Lowe do. Many of the actors of the original Stand were television actors and that was the medium it was originally made in.

The most amazing role reprisals I can think of in the business are Alan Hale Sr. who played Little John in three separate Robin Hood films (1922, 1938, and 1950) and Ian McDiarmid who played Palpatine as a younger man in the Star Wars prequels about 15 years after he played the role in Return of the Jedi.

Richard Jackson

Antiyonder> Not often, but, at the very least, I've seen actors carried over from the original who have played some kind of role in the remake. I only bring it up cause I just can't see anyone else playing those roles.

Don't suppose anyone caught tonight's Batman The Brave and The Bold episode tonight (written by Greg)?

Wasn't expecting Captain Atom to be an egotistical jerk (yeah I didn't even read spoilers on the episode), but I enjoyed every minute of the episode. Almost spit my coffee out when Aquaman claimed himself to be more humble.

Antiyonder

I just caught it myself, and without spoiling anything, the first line of the episode was...

"When the Prodigal Son returned, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him. For this, his son was lost and is found."

...In Jeff Bennett's dulcet tones.

ALGERNON - Yes, I've been concerned about that as well. I even mentioned it to Greg Weisman, asking if I could be paired up with somebody who *was* a DC Comics expert for the "Young Justice" questions. Unfortunately, Greg didn't know anybody who qualified, so I'm still clearing them and hoping that I won't let the wrong thing past.

(As I've mentioned before, I haven't seen "Young Justice", though I've picked up some general information about it from the discussions here. And the only team member whom I even know anything about outside the cartoon is Robin. That should give you some idea about how familiar I am with the setting.)

Todd Jensen - [merlyn1@mindspring.com]

Interestingly enough, the White Martians in M'gann's flashback in the tie in comics look far less beastial, being basically identical to Green Martians except for... well being white.

Algernon: For all we know,
those could BOTH be right. Perhaps on Mars-16, Green Martians are capable of interbreeding with White Martians, and Ma'alefa'ak is in fact the White Martian shown briefly in M'gann's memories from "Bereft"? There aren't exactly a lot of well-known individual White Martians in the comics, so making J'onn's brother be their leader would make things a lot more interesting...
MASTERDRAMON>
Heh, I thought I was the only one who remembered that Ma'alefa'ak even existed. It's actually surprising the he doesn't get used more often considering J'onn doesn't exactly have a large rogues gallary to choose from.

I actually had this theory that he was Erath-16 M'gann's father before we got all the hints of her secretly being a White Martian
Algernon

Brainiac: I am indeed well-aware of that film, LOL, and quite excited for it.
The rest of the Legion roster is more of a mixed bag for me, neither extremely horrible or extremely stellar, but I'm at least happy to see Ma'alefa'ak finally getting some play outside of the comics. He's a tragically underused villain.

Incidentally, anyone else think that the L-# designations might be based on age/seniority? L-1 is obviously the oldest and L-2 the second-oldest by quite a fair margin, and if we're only counting his time spent on the Earthplane in this particular form then L-7 would definitely be the youngest. The others would line up decently enough, though I'm not sure L-6 could possibly be younger than L-5. Still, this is a new continuity, so exactly how long ago L-6's brain got removed from his body could be quite different here.
Algernon: Strictly speaking, the first big "mark" on history
Vandal Savage made in current continuity was committing the first murder - of his brother, Abel (yes, THAT Abel). This led directly to him becoming history's first cannibal as well.
In any event, I like L-1 a lot in the comics. I tend to enjoy stories with L-2 and L-3 more, but L-1's long overdue for a real chance to shine at something like this.

A giant spider....how did Jon Peters resist not remaking The Wizard of Oz?

Peters, a Hollywood producer, mandated Kevin Smith to include a giant spider in his unproudced Superman script and later got his wish when he produced Wild Wild West which featured a giant mechanical spider.

In other news, I'll be showing the Joker clips from "Revelations" to my students tomorrow instead of...doing whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing....ah yes...teaching! That's it. One of my students has the English name of Joker and they'll all puff up with pride when I tell them that Young Justice was animated in Korea.

Richard Jackson

RICHARD JACKSON - Yes, the first book in the Oz series is the most-read, and the sequels aren't as well-known. (That's often the way with the first book in the series; "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" is similarly the best-known book in the Chronicles of Narnia.)

You're kind of right about the movie adapting the first part of the book. In the book, Glinda doesn't show up immediately after the Wizard leaves in the balloon, as she does in the movie. Instead, Dorothy and her friends have to journey south to ask for her help, with a few adventures along the way. (For example, they pass through a forest which is plagued by a giant spider that is eating the animals who live there; the animals petition the Cowardly Lion to deliver them. The Lion makes short work of the giant spiders, and the grateful animals make him their king. One adventure on the way south did get a parallel in the movie, an encounter with fighting trees, which was probably the original of the scene in the movie where Dorothy and the Scarecrow meet the unfriendly apple tree.)

Since a while ago, "The Wizard of Oz" was added to the GargWiki by Richard Jackson, I thought I'd mention that some gargoyles appeared in the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum - or at least, creatures called "gargoyles". They differed from conventional gargoyles in being made out of wood rather than stone, and lived in an underground realm (Dorothy encountered them on a later adventure, in company with the Wizard, whom she'd been reunited with). These gargoyles were portrayed as mute - and even disliked loud noises, making the best defense against them a lot of shouting. They also had removable wings that you could unhook (gargoyle criminals have their wings unhooked as punishment for their crimes). Obviously a very different lot from even conventional gargoyles, let alone the gargoyles we know.

Darn, shoulda waited a little longer to post my thoughts on Revelation. Repost:
I think my favorite moments in the latest episode of Young Justice have to be Artemis' "I feel naked. And not in a fun way," line, and Robin's understated "Timber" line when the bombs on the vine control center are detonated.

I liked this episode but for me it seemed like one of the weaker ones so far. I might have enjoyed it more if I was a DC fangirl and could fully appreciate all the cameos, but since I didn't know who a lot of these characters were, I wasn't exactly having fangasms like a lot of people who might be more familiar with DC's characters. I'm not really crazy about this interpretation of the Joker, nor his voice acting, nor a lot of his dialogue, although I did like his "Wonderboy, you are mine" line, mocking Dr. Fate. I also wasn't really all that impressed with the voice acting for Poison Ivy, and I didn't really like how Miss Martian's bioship suddenly seems like a member of the team. Not that I would mind having a thinking, feeling ship who can communicate with Miss Martian as a team member, but it seems like the extent of their relationship could have been established a bit more firmly in prior episodes. Wasn't crazy about the bioship being dragged underwater and Miss Martian saying, "She's in shock; she'll need time to recover," when what I was seeing on the screen seemed totally inconsistent with that statement--it looked like the bioship was done for. Obviously that line was needed to establish that the bioship would be coming back to save the day later in the episode when she busted them out of Wotan's cage, but still, meh. Also, normally I don't mind "Hello Megan" all that much but in this episode I didn't like how it was used. Why does Miss Martian even need anyone else to tell her that a hatch needs to be opened?

I enjoyed Dr. Fate. He takes himself so seriously that it's almost funny to me. I chuckled at his "FATE HAS INTERVENED" line.

I enjoyed seeing Red Arrow and Green Arrow putting their differences aside temporarily to fight the plant creatures.

Loved how Captain Marvel was still trying to hang around with the Young Justice team even after his baby-sitting gig was over. Now that I know his secret identity it totally makes sense. Of course a 10 year old kid is going to want to hang around with the teenagers rather than the adults.

Liked seeing that feelings might be growing between Wally and Artemis. After Kent Nelson's advice to Wally that he "find his own little spitfire" it seemed obvious that these two are intended for each other, and I loved seeing how they (initially) acted towards one another in Bereft when they had no memories of each other, but they were quickly back at each other's throats. But now, it's like they're starting to grow on each other, albeit begrudgingly. Towards the beginning of Revelation, we see them walking together towards Robin and Aqualad, and later Artemis gives Wally one of her breathe-underwater things. Then we see Wally trying to be protective of Artemis and Artemis making a sling for Wally's arm. I also liked early in the episode when she kept hitting him in the arm during the meeting with Batman. Spitfire, indeed.

I hope Wolf sticks around for a while, and I hope we get to learn more about his "character" so to speak. I don't know how his intelligence compares to a human's, but we know his brain was enhanced so I think it might be interesting if he got his own character episode at some point. Also, now that I view the bioship as an actual character, I suppose I hope we get to learn a little more about her. While I'm not crazy about the fact that her "character-hood" was established in such a sudden way (to me at least), I hope it's not something that just gets shelved away and never talked about. There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!
