No big, Richard -- but thanks to DTaina for getting some pics of the Bikers up so quickly! (always makes a stubby article look so much better, hehe) :)

That review of First Contact was horribly painful to watch... I think I liked Tommy Wiseau's The Room better... and THAT was painful.

I happen to like First Contact... IMO...

Oh yeah....

R.I.P. George Stacy. Truly you were Clancy Brown's most heroic character.

Greg B.: Oh, sorry. Thought we were still talking about Punisher, LOL.

With regards to "Dexter," I'm sure it's excellent. It's just not my cup of tea in the least.

Dexter doesn't use guns, just his wits, a tranq, and his tools.

Seriously, it's a terrific show. Well written, well acted, and just brilliant TV.

Greg B.: I don't watch the show so I can't say for certain, but from what I've heard (from your blog, among other sources) the question of whether or not he's doing the right thing has continuously been kept a deliberately ambiguous one. Frank Castle left the loose shelter of "ambiguous" decades ago.

...Still, the similarity in premise is probably one of the reasons I have no interest in picking up the series.

Greg B.: Long story, but in short, he's long-since crossed the line into being an utter psychopath...whom I have never seen written with any of the subtlety or finesse required to write an utter psychopath and keep him interesting. That fact that we're actually supposed to consider him a hero throughout all this just makes it worse.

Anonymous: I sincerely hope not, since the Punisher is my least-favorite character in all of comics.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see
the Sin-Eater
come out of this, though.

Nevertheless...yes, R.I.P. Captain Stacy. You will be missed.

And now for some random thoughts about several current Formspring storylines:

Isis is probably getting tired of constantly being bound by "mortals". I know I would if I were an Oberati!

So, Namor, or the 'spring's version, is related to Disney's Altantis characters, eh? Huh, fancy that. Still hoping on more Marvel characters showing up!*

And finally, R.I.P. Captain George Stacy.
(*Now would be a good time for a certain Frank Castle to show up!)

Comet
I'm shipping off...to find my wooden leg!

Algernon: Haha, exactly. That's what everyone says about the theme. It's great for the first 15 seconds. That's the sad part of alot of the 70s and 80s animated shows - they all had to have the "Cute" factor to an otherwise good series. (anyone remember Filmation's Batman. They had the original live action 60s voices-Adam West and Burt Ward-and then ruined it with "Bat-myte".). If I recall the story correctly, in the 1960s, there was a wave of super hero shows that were extremely popular-and also considered violent. Then B,S & P came into play and all those shows vanished from the airwaves and we got the Scooby Doos, Archies, Josie & the Pussycats, The Amazing Chan & the Chan Clan, Hong Kong Phooey, etc. Intersting, but never violent. They key factor is that the villian always had to trip up himself/herself somehow. They could never hurt anyone-that was the rule.
Wingless

WINGLESS> Sigh... The sad thing is that for about the first 15 seconds, the HB Godzilla intro is pretty awesome. Then just as it's getting you all pumped thinking "Oh yeah, this is going to be hardcore!", it sucker punches you with freaking Godzookie!

You the funny thing with TGS (which Greg B covered in his blog) is that the series actually tried to do a watered down version of Gargoyles, when most fics try the opposite. I mean you have fics like Spongebob Squarepants or Kim Possible done in a PG13 tone, yet the one series which is highly adult in tone is made into a generic kid friendly cartoon (yeah I read the bit about the plans for Thailog tearing off and using Claw's wings were rejected because they thought it was too mean).

I think sarcasm works best when spoken, because it depends so much on tone of voice. (Though I'm not a big fan of sarcasm.)

Tonight is Burns Night. I wonder if the Manhattan clan would ever take any notice of it. Of course, Robert Burns was from the period when they were in stone sleep, but they've taken some interest in other writers from that period (such as Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky). Of course, the night probably appeals more to Scottish humans than to Scottish gargoyles. I wonder if Macbeth takes any notice of that night (since we know that he still keeps an eye on Scotland - and has for centuries).

Todd Jensen

I think that's another testimonial for the creation of a Sarcasm Font.

Hi guys. Usually I post over at TGS, and kind of lurk here. This is one of the most supportive fandoms I've ever encountered, and has such endurance, given the small amount of new material over the years (all of which I'm very appreciative for).

Ok, now for the business:
My friends are in a band called the Five Year Mission. They're a Star Trek TOS tribute band, writing one song for every episode, they've released "Year Two" (16 song increments) recently, and are working on "Year 3." They're in a contest for the Super Bowl here in Indianapolis, sponsored by the Rolling Stone Magazine. If they win, they get to open for Janes Addiction and The Roots. Currently they're losing votes to a band that made an appeal to the guy that owns the Houston Rockets, who re-tweeted. That band is some college band in Bloomington, Indiana. We need your help. Revenge of the Nerds and all. Please please please vote for the Five Year Mission at the link I put in the spot marked "website" on the comment form. You can vote once a day until Sunday, January 29th at 8pm. Make sure you go through the process, which involves clicking 'vote' twice in the end, so that 'vote' changes to 'voted'. And please help get the word out. Gargoyles fans can accomplish anything. :) Thank you.

Dezi - [nothingtofear@hotmail.com]

MASTERDRAMON - Yes, I believe so. Though (and linked to the reason you gave) the canon Castaway would definitely not believe that the gargoyles would come to the aid of people in danger. What's left of his sanity depends on his belief that the gargoyles are evil monsters, to keep him from confronting his own responsibility for what happened to Jason.
Todd Jensen

Todd: Actually, I could believe entirely that the canon Castaway has a strong desire to kill at least Goliath personally; in his twisted worldview, after all, Goliath is the monster responsible for crippling Jason.
Masterdramon - [kmc12009@mymail.pomona.edu]
"We could be heroes, just for one day..." - David Bowie

ANTIYONDER - I don't think that the attack on the passenger train could have been motivated by a desire, even a twisted one, to protect humanity from the gargoyles. At the time, Castaway and his followers believed that Goliath, Hudson, and the trio had been killed in their trap (at least, I don't remember any hints that they knew the gargoyles were still alive) and that Angela and Bronx, both safely incarcerated by the authorities and on their way to a secure confinement, were the only gargoyles left. If they were really interested in protecting humanity, they would have seen their work completed, and had no need to go after Angela and Bronx. The only reason they could have had to attack the passenger train would be "I want the pleasure of killing them myself".

(Now there'd be another potential for a scene to make the "Goliath Chronicles" version of Castaway even more of a cliched villain than he already was - making it clear that he wants to kill every gargoyle personally, especially Goliath, and that if another Quarryman beats him to it, that Quarryman is going to be joining the slain gargoyle shortly.)

Todd Jensen

I wonder how TGC would have progressed if Greg W. had not set up the first episode for them? Would the Quarrymen have even existed?
Vinnie - [tpeano29@hotmail.com]
God Bless you All!

Todd Jensen> Perhaps, but even then, the attack on the train could have still worked with their portrayal in "For It May Come True" with them feeling that endangering the passengers is a small price to pay for the rest of humanity's safety.
Antiyonder

ANTIYONDER - Yes, I get the suspicion that the "Goliath Chronicles" production team had lost track of Castaway and the Quarrymen's motivations early on. The fact that they were ready to cause plenty of destructive mayhem to get rid of the gargoyles, as well as their schemes being based on the fact that the gargoyles were heroes who protected people, threw out the notion of a frightened public duped by Castaway's rhetoric (not to mention that the Quarrymen of "The Goliath Chronicles" seemed to almost all be professional thugs). And the writers didn't provide them with a replacement motive. I get the feeling that their real reason for going after the gargoyles was simply to provide "The Goliath Chronicles" with a main antagonist, and particularly as a way to conveniently solve the "hated and feared by humanity" problem when the Quarrymen are foolish enough to attack the passenger train that was taking Angela and Bronx to prison (why go to all the trouble of framing the gargoyles, Castaway, if you're not going to let the human authorities handle them?). I suspect, of course, that Castaway's attack on the train was a last-minute notion that the production team came up with after Greg Weisman begged them not to use the original ending of the gargoyles running away from New York and never returning.

Perhaps the only thing missing from "Angels in the Night" was one of the Quarrymen expressing uneasiness about attacking the train because of all the human passengers on board, Castaway bashing in his head with his Quarryhammer, and saying to the rest of his followers "Does anybody else have any objections?" Though I don't think that would have made it past Standards & Practices.

Todd Jensen

I thought I'd share this bit of bad acting.

"Liz Allan: I like Miss Martian,"

=)

Harlan Phoenix - [harlanphoenix@live.com]

Antiyonder> I think the main problem with TGC was not the lack of familiarity, because Gargoyles had freelance writers before, but the lack of Greg Weisman's guiding hand. Looking at his memos for scripts, you can really see how he saved a lot of them. Guys like Michael Reaves and Cary Bates would have the main cast way out of character at times. Take the first draft of "The Price", Xanatos is described as "angry" and says "Blast it!" "Sanctuary" had some silly sub-plot about a video camera which Greg took out. And then when Bates went to TGC, it's like his first drafts were all approved. And don't get me wrong, Bates and Reaves are excellent word smiths, but Gargoyles is just proof of the auteur theory that only one man write it or at least guide its writing.
Richard Jackson

Todd: Since you've seen "Infiltrator," you've already heard a very short clip of the YJ-version of Ra's, albeit behind a Light monitor. He's voiced by Israeli-American actor Oded Fehr, whom DC-savvy viewers might remember as Doctor Fate in "Justice League" and Equinox in "Batman: Brave and the Bold."

As for the pronunciation issue, I've heard from a friend who speaks Arabic that it should be something along the lines of "raw-suh," with a glottal stop between the syllables. Since "raysh" is what they went with in "B:TAS," though, that's the one that's burned into most people's consciousnesses (including mine, I must admit).

...And now, since my browser tabs are getting cluttered again, it's time to unload a handful more "Greg Weisman" Formspring responses!

Captain Maria Chavez: I used to enjoy watching W.I.T.C.H. with my daughter when she was younger.

Liz Allan: I like Miss Martian, we could have used her back on Midtown High's cheerleading squad.

Officer Jean DeWolff: Tell me when he gets "Doc Shakespeare" made.

Sergeant Stan Carter: I'm a little old for cartoons, don't you think?

Cletus Kasady: I'd love to create a little carnage...

Pity there was no third season...MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Sharon Banks (Flash Thompson's lawyer from the comics, with the identity being applied to one of SpecSpidey's recurring background extras): My fiancée is a big fan. He showed me the Green Arrow Showcase the other day, and I can see why.

Doctor Joshua Sweet (from "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" and "Team Atlantis"): I'd have liked to have seen a Team Up between him and Tad Stones. That'd be a good show.

Milo Thatch (ditto): I haven't been to the surface in over 60 years...Why do you think that I would know who that is?

Queen Kidagakash (ditto): See my husband's response.

Prince Namor (a combination of the familiar Sub-Mariner from the comics and the son of Milo and Kida): It's not often I agree with my father, but this question is absurd!

Todd Jensen> Another difficulty in interviewing the "Goliath Chronicles" production team; I suspect that most of them saw it as just something they were paid to work on, had little interest in it (certainly not as much as Greg Weisman had towards "Gargoyles") and quickly forgot the details once they moved on to other projects.

Sounds right to me. Like I and several others have said before, it's understandable that the crew weren't able to familiarize themselves with the previous seasons that much, but you'd think that they would keep consistent with their season. Even then there were inconsistencies such as:

1. Castawau upon his next appearance was less subtle than Weisman depicted him as, but still seemed to believe that gargoyles were evil, and from there became a typical villain who knew full well that gargoyles protect people.

2. Sevarius being arrested even though Genesis Undone didn't have him committing a public crime.

3. Yale treating Castaway as a trusted citizen.

Antiyonder

SUPERMORFF AND BRAINIAC - Thanks for the spelling correction. I haven't seen his name in print too often, so I had to guess at the spelling.

BISHANSKY - I considered that possibility only *after* I thought of the "people are more inclined to forgive crimes when they're committed by a member of a persecuted minority fighting back" explanation. Which probably shows what an innocent I am. :)

(It reminds me of another comment that I'd made about Demona once, where I speculated about somebody capturing her and, after discovering how she turns into a human in the daytime, putting her on display at sunrise and sunset, charging admission for the spectacle. When I posted that creativity demon here, somebody - I forget whom - asked me if Demona's captor was a eunuch.)

I wonder whether the "no more time travel stories" response was part of a wish to move to a more down-to-earth tone in which the only fantasy element (most of the time) would be the gargoyles, and where their antagonists would usually be ordinary hatemongers rather than "super-villains".

Another difficulty in interviewing the "Goliath Chronicles" production team; I suspect that most of them saw it as just something they were paid to work on, had little interest in it (certainly not as much as Greg Weisman had towards "Gargoyles") and quickly forgot the details once they moved on to other projects.

Bishanky>Interesting to know. Thank you.
Harlan Phoenix - [harlanphoenix@live.com]

HARLAN> The only real behind the scenes TGC story we ever got was a story Lydia Marano told at the 2001 Gathering.

Greg Weisman was paid to consult, and he was pitching them the ideas and plans he had for season three. One of them was "TimeDancer" which, as we all know, became "The Gate," "Tyrants," and "Phoenix" in the comic book.

The new producer, Scott Thomas was smiling and nodding, and Lydia sounded pretty excited about the story. She had written "Avalon Part Two" and worked on "City of Stone" and enjoyed the time travel and dark ages aspects of the series. Scott Thomas smiled and nodded.

As Marano told it, the moment after Greg left the room, he said to her "We're not doing that. No more time travel episodes" and somehow, we ended up with "Runaways" instead. And all they had in common was Brooklyn being pissed off.

There are a few things I could extrapolate via the archives and just common sense in the face of those excerpts, the production as a whole from the perspective of the people who had to work within those constraints has intrigued me for a long time.

I mean, honestly, as much as I don't watch TGC at all...I've seen way worse continuations of shows. So it's not a thing that really illicits rage from me. Befuddlement and humor at times, sure, but only at the content itself. I wouldn't exactly approach this like a douche. I'd want to be as polite as possible and hopefully establish that this really would be a fairly genuinely inquiry on the basis of my affection for production stories and/or information.

But I'm safe in assuming there's never been much of an attempt, or...?

Not that specifically, though (while I can rarely bring myself to watch it, granted) the Goliath Chronicles in general is a point of great intrigue for me.

Has anyone ever tried to contact the people who had worked on it who hadn't also worked on the original series?

Harlan Phoenix - [harlanphoenix@live.com]

While not excusing any of her actions, I've always felt a little sorry for Demona. Living about 900 years without any friends to speak of would probably drive anyone crazy. If Goliath or the others had to live through all that, I doubt they would have come through as easily.

As far as "Dark Ages" Demona goes, I always preferred her characterizations in "Awakening Part One", "Vows" and "City of Stone" In "Long Way Till Morning" her flashback personality seemed too broad and strident.

Before all the rotten eggs and vegetables head my way, let me explain. In "Awakening Part One", I thought she was very likeable. She was frustrated with the humans, which was understandable. However, she had a lot of respect for Goliath, as to when he would calm her down after the banquet debacle and she didn't contradict him in front of the Trio when he punished them. When she appeared "Awakening Part 4 & 5" and even "Temptation", I was wondering, "Whoa, what could this nice gargoyle have gone through for her to be so insane and vindictive?" It really set my imagination on fire of what could have changed her so. Then "Long Way Till Morning" came and she was so snide, complaining and vindictive in the flashbacks, it was like "Aww, she was like that all along?"

Then "Vows" came along and I like how she was portrayed as a confused kid, but still good. Then "City of Stone" where she has never been more evil and...heroic.

I think there is another reason. Two fairly large and attractive reasons.

Brainiac> Koreans have the same Zodiac as the Chinese. My Vietnamese-American friend told me it's also the same Zodiac in Vietnam, where the New Year is called Tet. Everyone knows about the Tet Offensive...it was during the Lunar New Year.

On Lunar New Year, Koreans will usually dress up in traditonal clothing and play traditional games. The kids have a tradition where they kowtow to the adults and they get money. The men get drunk and watch sporting events. Everyone gets a year older. Age is usually calculated by how many Lunar New Year's you pass. You're one when you are born to factor in time in the womb and if you're born a week before Lunar New Year, you become 2 years old while being technically a week old.

Richard Jackson

Heh. Amusing that I got scooped with the same opening sentence by someone using the same avatar. That's what I get for looking up the name for the Korean New Year with a slow connection.

One other question occurred to me though...do the Korean people also consider it the Year of the Dragon or is the zodiac cycle different for them?

Todd> It's spelled Ra's al Ghul. The pronunciation on the series is not technically correct Arabic as I understand but (before everyone leaps in) it is correct in that the character's original creator pronounced it that way, and he should probably know best. (And, because someone will point it out if I don't, Batman Begins got it wrong on both fronts.)
Supermorff

MASTERDRAMON - Yes, that's a good point. Thanks for bringing that up.

On a similar note, I've already read that Reis el-Ghul (I hope I spelled that name right) is one of the Light and is appearing in the series, and hope that when he shows up and speaks, I'll be able to accept a version of him voiced by someone other than David Warner (who I thought did a great job on him in "Batman: TAS" - and certainly helped me understand why Greg Weisman brought back the Archmage in Season Two).

Todd Jensen

Happy Lunar New Year! Today, Korea was effectively shut down and all the buses and trains were sold out, so I was a shut-in today and will probably be tomorrow.

The only Lunar New Year Date I can see from the Gargoyles is from 1996:

February 19th. Professor Lydia Duane and Doctor Arthur Morwood-Smyth make hotel reservations for their upcoming vacation on Easter Island.

The 1995 Lunar New Year was January 31st and it took place between the episodes "Her Brother's Keeper" and "Reawakening."

Todd: Speaking as a self-professed DC geek, I think the problem is less about prior knowledge of DC and more about just being whiny and unable to accept changes to the source material...which comes with the territory of any fans of a work that gains an adaptation.

I happen to be a huge fan of both the "Harry Potter" books and films (the last four in particular in the latter case), for example, and yet I will freely acknowledge that many of the fans who love the books as zealously as I do abhor the movies for what I consider to be petty or superficial reasons. For me personally, though, my knowledge of the book series only enhanced the viewing experience.

The same is true of "Young Justice." While I'm quite glad that people without much knowledge of DC can enjoy it, half of my own enthusiasm for the show comes from recognizing all the minor and long-forgotten DC characters populating this world. Words cannot describe how happy I was, for example, when (pretty minor spoiler ahead, but I'll tag it just in case)
the brief flashback of the Justice Society of America in "Humanity" featured Wesley Dodds, the original Sandman and one of my favorite Golden-Age heroes.
In short, I think it's about attitude more than it's about foreknowledge. I come in with a positive and enthused attitude, and my high expectations are virtually always met by this wonderful cast and crew.

...Also, on the YJ note: the FAQ, courtesy of Harlan Phoenix and myself, is finally done! There's still a fair bit of editing I need to get to, but I hope to have it more-or-less wrapped-up by next weekend. I am starting my new internship on Capitol Hill today, however, so that needs to take priority in the short-term.

A thought I've had on "Young Justice" after reading a lot of the "Ask Greg" questions in the queue. They frequently revolve around either "Why is such-and-such different in the 'Young Justice' universe from the regular DC comics-universe or previous animated adaptations of DC Comics?" or "When is such-and-such going to show up in the series?" It makes me wonder whether it's better to not know that much about the DC Comics-universe when watching "Young Justice" (or at least, suspending what you know about it). After seeing the first eight episodes on DVD, I can testify that you don't need to know a lot about the "comics-universe" to understand what's going on in the series - and the questions Greg gets often make me wonder if a lot of knowledge might get in the way.

One final thought, inspired by a couple of Bishansky's posts last week: Demona apologists are fairly common, but I don't think I've ever seen a Hunter/Castaway/Quarryman apologist.
