GregX, maybe you should follow your own advice before putting your foot in your mouth. Perdita is 10. Also: "episode would end wit The Light". I think the word you were looking for is WITH. Apparently the folks at World Finest don't really check your work, so I wouldn't brag about those insipid reviews if I were you.

Antiyonder: I kept kicking Marvelman's post because he was asking questions about multiple unrelated subjects ("Young Justice" and Greg's opinions on "Paradise Lost"). Which, yes, could be spelled out better in the guidelines.

Arlo: If you've got suggestions for better ways to run the question-asking service, feel free to e-mail them to Gorebash.

Not trying to criticize, but one of the problems I've had is that even with search, I've often had a hard time finding specific questions, partly because I think the search programming could be improved, but also because of how some people put more than one question together, as you said. I think if you added basic tagging support as well as improved search functionality, that would make it a lot easier to find the answers, both for the askers and for the volunteer Ask Greg Helpers.

Also, since we know people are going to ask multiple questions anyway, why not give them the option to do so right on the question submission page? Have something like "Ask another question" right below where they're typing, and when the user clicks on it, have another form appear right below for them to enter their second question in, and so on. Then maybe add some logic so that if it looks like their text is long, or they have numerous question marks, make something appear on the right reminding them to ask it as a separate question. Maybe have some other logic to remind them not to ask spoilers. It's not as complicated as it sounds. I'm sure I could code something like that relatively easily in Javascript.

Then, if you gave each question a title besides just text, I think the search feature would have an easier time of finding the questions people were looking for. This wouldn't solve all the problems, but I think it would reduce the number of duplicate questions and spoiler requests considerably.

Masterdramon> If I may put my two cents on the matter in, I think the problem is that the No Spoiler rule isn't present on here: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/index.php#guidelines

Heck, when Marvelman was resubmitting his questions for a third time: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=14730

He mentions making sure that his questions weren't story ideas, story ideas being given as questions or employment requests.

So would it be possible to modify the guideline page to include "No Spoiler Requests"?

Antiyonder

GregXB:
I thought the doctors said she was ten . . . but whatevs, at least they're not "What did Artemis whisper to Wally?" when Artemis herself said she was going to break the news to him and the context of the details was effectively screaming at us.
Another great episode, with fun little nods of continuity all around . . .
specifically I'm thinking of Zatanna finding out about the Watchtower (and Batman's voice clearly getting more frustrated). I also did blink when Doctor Fate was mentioned on the news . . . if I remember right, I don't think Zatanna, Miss Martian, and Artemis were taking down the same snow-ship-thing as Captain Marvel & Doctor Fate, but if they were, that'd be a decent story for the comic.
"The suspense is terrible . . . I hope it lasts," -- Willy Wonka

Arlo: That option has actually returned for Todd and I recently, as you can see with my response here (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=14564).

But the restrictions on when we can do this are fairly stringent. The fact that most people ask multiple questions in the same post dilutes its effectiveness significantly - because if there's even one question in a given post that can't be answered by a specific quote, we have no choice but to send the whole thing on to Greg.

On a brighter note, though, "Coldhearted" was just...fantastic. Perhaps I'll say more later, but if nothing else this was some of the most beautiful animation I've seen out of this series yet, and that is saying something.

I'll admit it's been a while since I've been here, but wasn't there an Ask Greg Helper system before that had volunteers filter out those questions that the answers were already known to (e.g. "Spoiler request - no comment," "Asked and answered," etc.)? I could be wrong, but from what I saw, it looked like only the most basic questions were being filtered, and Greg had to type the "Asked and answered" stuff himself a lot of the time. What happened to that?

MASTERDRAMON - Yes, I'd forgotten about the "Shocker's identity" questions until you reminded me.

And I think you've displayed that a person can be closely familiar with the source material without having problems with the changes that the "Young Justice" production team made. Thanks.

Todd Jensen

Todd: I think that's probably true...but it derives itself from (A), I think, rather than any intrinsic problem with the respective source materials.

As I've stated once or twice here, I'd say that the long streak of good-to-phenomenal animated DC properties has raised fan expectations much higher, as well as making them more rigid and unaccepting of change. SpecSpidey didn't have any standards to meet (beyond those of the decidedly mediocre 90s series) so it sailed by a little better, I think.

If Marvel had anything like "Batman: The Animated Series" under their belt prior to SpecSpidey's premier, I'm pretty damn sure we'd have seen a lot more spam here than we actually did. I'm not saying it got off easy, of course (Heaven knows how many people complained about Herman Schultz being replaced by Montana)...but that's one reason I think we saw such a distinct difference.

Masterdramon - [kmc12009@mymail.pomona.edu]
"'Round, 'round, 'round, 'round, I get around..." - The Beach Boys

MASTERDRAMON - Two good answers. I'd wondered, also, whether there was a higher proportion of volatile DC fans than Marvel Comics fans; I don't know enough about either fandom to know if that's the case.
Todd Jensen

Todd: I think it's a confluence of two factors...

A) "Young Justice" has a much wider fanbase (and, for lack of better term, "hatebase") than "The Spectacular Spider-Man" did in its prime. This likely owes itself mostly to building on top of existing fandom communities for shows like "Justice League" and "Teen Titans," whereas SpecSpidey really had to build its fanbase from the ground up due to it being the first really stupendous Marvel animated series...well, ever.

B) The "Young Justice" fans being much more aware of AskGreg. Generally, I noticed that the discussions regarding SpecSpidey were a lot more...diffuse, and certainly a lot less connected to Station 8. But the "Young Justice" fandom, for better or for worse, watches this site like a hawk...and the more people watching the more decide to throw their hats into the question-asking "ring" without doing their homework first.

Todd> I might be guessing wrong, but maybe the fans attracted by YJ aren't concerned with courtesy as well as being unfamiliar with the rules.

But I could be wrong.

Antiyonder

I've been puzzling over this recently. We're probably all familiar now with the kinds of "Young Justice" questions that have been near-exasperating Greg Weisman (repeated queries of how old such-and-such-a-character - usually Zatanna - is, spoiler requests, etc.). We didn't see such a spate of questions, however, over "The Spectacular Spider-Man" when it was airing, even though it was also based on a pre-existing comics property. I wonder why that is.
Todd Jensen

Sounds good. I wonder what inspired the change.

Maybe we should all start a letter-writing campaign. I remember hearing somewhere that execs count every written letter they receive as a thousand fans who will buy the product, whereas they largely ignore e-mails. I'm not sure about phone calls.

Looks like it's being called "Friends and Enemies" and "Crossing the Line" for some reason, but you can make out the title in the pictures, assuming the pictures are accurate. That would place it in December, 1996 and January, 1997.

We still need Cyber-Hunt. Anthony, if you would be kind enough to get that one for us, and also verify the Lines of Allegiance issues, since the pictures may not be correct, that would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering if anyone's managed to put together a list for the wiki on which issues of Disney Adventures Magazine had the Gargoyles comics in them. Right now, only the first one, November 1994, is specified. I think it's important to have this information available for fans and collectors (myself included), and I put in a request on the wiki's comments page and on here a while back, but never heard anything.

I really wish we could edit our questions to "Ask Greg". I looked back over the review I'd posted there of "Schooled", and when reading the bit about the school bus in trouble at the beginning and Bruce Wayne being ready to suit up as Batman and go to the rescue, realized that I had forgotten to include two crucial words: "in Metropolis". Because, of course, the whole point of my comment was the surprise of seeing a super-hero so firmly associated with Gotham City about to carry out some heroics in the city equally firmly associated with Superman. My comment lost its meaning when I forgot to type in those two words. *sigh*
Todd Jensen

Rebel : "you will most likely not get a positive reception" Not necessarily. After all, the Barracuda is one of the most widely read fanfic writers, and he started his 'fics right where TGS's second season left off.

Like most things in writing, borrowing charactors from other writers can turn out good, bad, or in between. It all depends on how you use them, and sometimes more importantly, why. A great example of both the good and the bad comes from (I hope no one minds me saying the name) Doug Elder. In his fanfics, he borrowed a couple of charactors from Christine Morgan. On the one hand, he inserted the Illuminati Grandmaster into his 'fics, a charactor who appeared for maybe three stories in Christine's 'verse. He ended up being a far more important charactor in Doug's world, and IMHO, was utilized quite well. On the other hand, he also inserted Aiden Ferguson into his 'fics. That didn't work so well. Mainly because, as he himself admitted, the main reason she was used was to convieniently marry off Lex without having to, you know, actually write any scenes focusing on Lex. So in TGS terms, writing a story because you've got a good idea for using Sara Jasper to do something *gasp* useful, is fine. Putting Sata into your universe so that you don't have to focus on Brooklyn's love life, not such a good idea.

So to get back to my main point, it's not always bad to write stories based on someone else's 'fics. After all, that's pretty much what the current TGS staff *is* doing.

ShadowChild28 : Todd's no longer on staff, so he can't really give or deny his permission. I however, am. So I'll give you the text of TGS's disclaimer:
"It is inevitable that our characters and story arcs will be used in independent fanfic in the near future. If you plan to do an independent fanfic involving our characters and/or story arcs, please give credit to the TGS staff by mentioning us in your disclaimer. This is all we ask. Also, keep in mind that we are not permitted to look at any independent fanfic that uses our characters. Therefore, you cannot suggest that a character of your creation be used in future episodes of TGS and/or it's subsequent spin-offs. We also cannot reveal any plot threads for the future of TGS, so don't even try to ask us for hints on what the future will hold."

In other words, as long as you acknowledge whose charactors belong to whom, there's nothing preventing you from using our charactors in your own work. Good luck.

Spen

SHADOWCHILD 28 - I haven't even been part of TGS for years (not since the end of 2003), so I'm hardly the best person to ask for permission. And I think that it's obsolete by now, since much of its content has been contradicted by the revelations in "Clan-Building" (thus, we now know that the Arthurian identity of the head of the Illuminati is Percival rather than Lancelot, for example).

(Shortly after leaving TGS, I thought of writing an Arthurian series that borrowed some ideas from "TGS: Pendragon" but improved on them, both by setting them in its own universe minus the "Gargoyles" elements and revising some of the characters according to new ideas that I'd had about them, but wound up abandoning it.)

Rebel> It is very difficult for me to develop a story once I get an idea. I mean, I can watch the show but I don't know what the characters are feeling.
ShadowChild28 - [Kendal.renfro@yahoo.com]

ShadowChild28 > I'm not Todd, but I think using someone else's ideas/concepts for your fanfiction is a bad idea. Granted, ALL fanfiction is using someone else's ideas/concepts, but if you're borrowing ideas from OTHER fanfiction, your stories will become even less original. Plus, many Gargoyles fans have read most of the TGS stories, so if you are posting your fanfiction online you will most likely not get a positive reception.

If you're doing it for your own personal improvement as a writing exercise and have no intentions of posting it anywhere, that might be alright, but you're still going to become a better writer if your fanfiction is "original fanfiction". At some point, it would be a good idea to stop writing fanfiction altogether and make up your own story-verse with your own rules and your own characters and conflicts.

Rebel

The only text that's hard for me to read is Todd's blue (I don't know if it's dark or regular). I don't know why, but my eyes blur it. I think it's because it doesn't mesh well with the black background.

@Greg B Great question concerning the Bad Guys dates and events from Greg's timeline. I'm glad he was feeling generous. http://s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=14511

The purple/Goliath seems to be coming back fine for me.

If anyone else here uses Opera, setting the veiw to "fit to width" causes all dark colored text to appear white. I don't know if any other browsers have that option, though. On my old monitor, I never had a problem with reading any of the text colors, even dark blue, but with this one, even Todd's bright blue is unreadable normally.

One thing about the skins-no matter what one I select, they always default to the gray "Awakenings" skin when I return. I'm curious if there's a way if it can be set to stay once you select it(I like the purple Goliath skin-naturally). I'm also for doing away for the extremely dark font colors-since, at least with my monitor, I have to highlight the text to read it. Anyone else have this problem?

@Landon Thank you! I didn't know that ComiXology existed.

Young Justice is digitally released on ComiXology: http://www.comixology.com/Young-Justice-2011/comics-series/5348

ComiXology has apps out for the iPhone, iPad, Android market and Kindle Fire: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=35377

So you should already be able to read YJ on the Kindle Fire.

Landon Thomas - [<- Gargoyles News Twitter Feed]

Anthony> Would that work? I thought Kindle was all in black and white.
Supermorff

Before I ask Greg, does anyone know if they plan on publishing the YJ comics to be purchased and read on the Kindle?
Anthony Tini

@Supermorff I just use the normal gray skin with the images hidden.

I'm not sure who's in charge of opening and/or closing the Ask A Question section, but may I suggest that if the unanswered queue reaches 300 that it be closed allowing Greg and his helpers time to catch up so they don't feel overwhelmed. It's just a thought I had that may decrease overall frustration even further. If Greg and helpers feel whelmed, then just disregard this suggestion.

Anthony Tini

I'm glad the credits for latest YJ episode are up. Jim Gordon's voice in particular was frustrating me to no end!

Question for the room: What skin do people use on Ask Greg? Personally I'm a fan of the dark grey default skin with the opening pan from "Awakening", but I wonder how many people use the other skins (Broadway, Goliath or Brooklyn).

Also, I know this is a Gargoyles fan site (and let's not change that!), but has anyone considered a new skin for Spectacular Spider-Man or Young Justice, or any of the other shows Greg was show-runner for? I'm not advocating it, but the idea popped into my head so I thought I'd ask.

Supermorff

In case anyone's interested, Keith David popped up in the voice actor trailer for Mass Effect 3.

I'd like to add that after reading up on "Misplaced" at the Young Justice wiki, I got a kick out of
the magical ceremony to split the world into two worlds, one populated by children and one populated by adults, took place at Roanoake Island; I place that idea alongside Dr. Fate's tower being located at Salem in "Denial". Not to mention the evocation of the Pied Piper (the ultimate "child-napper") in the invocation.
Todd Jensen

So Greg has stated that the theme for Season 1 of Young Justice is 'secrets and lies.' And I can go through, mentally, and see secrets and lies for each member of the HEROES (aka the team) -- some already revealed and some merely hinted.

BUT that got me further thinking, in Gargoyles, was there any real secret and/or lie for any of the HEROES (aka the Manhattan Clan) ? All the secrets and lies i could think of were from people who are generally villains of the series.

Anthony Tini> the item in the briefcase is something that was shown back in the episode "Downtime" so if you saw that older episode again, you'd be able to make the connection.

http://www.squidoo.com/thegeeklens-cartoons

@Todd
I believe it was mentioned in the episode that someone from the Light was surprised at the extent that Klarion went to in the episode for it was just a means of distraction for the Light's true purpose which it seems that some of you identified. As a layman when it comes to DC knowledge, I have no idea what was in the briefcase when I saw it.
Anthony Tini

Todd: For the record, that's "The Uncertainty Principle."

In any event, yes, I'm pretty dang sure that Greg - and by extension
Vandal Savage
- chose that name for a very particular reason.

Part of that comes from my suspicion (gleaned from Greg's answers here-and-there) that the idea for the Light came about from
Vandal and Ra's al Ghul shooting the breeze in the comradery of being fellow immortals - sort of a very twisted version of King Arthur and Macbeth having coffee together in "Rock and Roll." Ra's is nearly always played as a Well-Intentioned Extremist and Vandal often so, so the idea of forming a "club" of such individuals probably appealed to both of them.

Lex Luthor, in particular, is played best in my opinion when he genuinely believes (even if no one else does) that Superman is a dangerous alien menace who must be wiped out to ensure mankind's survival. Based on the stated purpose of Superboy's creation and his dreams in "What's the Story?" it seems likely that this is the interpretation of Luthor the showrunners have chosen, which makes me quite giddy.

This has only gained credence, I think, by their acquisition of what remains of Starro the Star Conqueror at the end of "Misplaced." Notice that their ultimate weapon isn't one of destruction or warfare, but rather one of the most potent forms of mind control in the galaxy.

My guess is that, soon, everyone is intended to see the light...whether they want to or not.
Persona. Yay, google!
Jurgan - [jurgan6@yahoo.com]

Ninth. (Sorry, I can't remember the name of the ninth episode of "The Spectacular Spider-Man".)

For me, one of the most interesting elements of "Young Justice" is the Light's name. Now, the obvious and simplest reason for that is the white glow that they use to disguise themselves when they're having videoconferences with their agents. But the word "light" also traditionally has positive connotations, which makes it creepy that it's being used for the "Big Bad" in the series.

Their talk about how everyone will "see the light" adds to this atmosphere. Now I've only seen the first eight episodes of "Young Justice"; all the other episodes I only know through what I've heard on the Internet. But from what I *have* seen, it makes me wonder if the Light are out for something more than conventional world-domination, fueled by mere power-hunger. Is their real goal more something along the lines of a vision they have of what's best for the world, a vision that they are so fanatically in favor of achieving that they're willing to do anything to achieve it, even to the extent, of, say
splitting the world into two worlds, one inhabited only by children, the other inhabited only by adults
, all in a "Utopia at any price" mode? I know that one of the individual members of the Light, Ra's al-Ghul, has a reputation for such an outlook.

We won't know for certain, of course, until the Season One finale (most likely), and it's possible that the "post-Downtime" episodes already aired have modified that speculation. But I am curious about it. (And I can see a parallel to the Illuminati in "Gargoyles" - whose own name is linked to "light" via Latin - who have also done a lot of unscrupulous things, but all for a cause that apparently involves the world's greatest hour of need, when King Arthur was originally meant to return - until Elisa's premature awakening of him changed all that and alarmed Peredur.)
