Supermoff> Thanks. I'm now in my fourth decade. (I also didn't realize the third decade was the 30s until you pointed it out.) But then, if you want to be technical, the fourth decade doesn't actually start until 31. So I'm still in my third. So maybe I should just erase this whole post, since nothing terribly interesting seems to have happened afterall.

Many thanks for Catherine Cobert, her first time in a cartoon, im a huge fan of JLE / JLI

I hope see Crimson Fox too. or Metamorpho, or Power girl

thank you Mr Greg Weisman

Same root. Indicating living together/existing together; not necessarily romantic, but still on a somewhat more permament base than "smash into this fortress together".

Mind you, my "translations" are probably *horrible* ancient Greek either way, so any discrepancies can be blamed (on the Watsonian level - see http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WatsonianVersusDoylist ) on Atlantean linguistic drift from actual ancient Greek.

Belated happy birthday, Matt! And happy birthday to Arlo now, too.

ARIS - That reminds me of the "Atlantean with subtitles" scene in "Downtime" (which I read you contributed to); I picked up the word "anax", meaning "king", in that conversation, and it took me back to my studying Homeric Greek in high school, and the textbook we used, which contained the first book of the Iliad in the original Greek. For the first time in years, I wondered whatever became of the textbook (though it was in battered condition even by the last time I remembered seeing it).

Ahem. This is not how I'd have translated the word "together" in Young Justice's today's episode :-). Instead of asking a translation again, I think Greg just reused the word I had offered him for the phrase "be together" when Aqualad was talking about Tula in Season 1. But the concept of "being together" (as in being with your girlfriend) is a bit different than the concept of "working together to infiltrate an enemy fortress". :-) Was amused.

The story of David and Goliath was probably familiar even in the Middle Ages (maybe even more so, given that the education of the time would have had a heavy emphasis on Scriptural literacy). I've seen it depicted in medieval stained-glass windows (with Goliath dressed up like a knight rather than an ancient Philistine warrior, of course).

MATT> Indeed, it wasn't until well into the modern age that the rest of the clan started consistently calling him "Goliath".

Happy belated B-Day by the way. ;)

Goliath was only in the Bible for one or two chapters. You have to read it pretty thoroughly to get all the characters- how many people have heard of King Josiah or Artaxerxes? The story of David and Goliath is well-known in popular culture today as a common metaphor, but it may not have been as popular back then. I don't know for sure- point is, even if he's read the Bible he may not recognize the reference.

Algernon> I tend to agree with you. I don't think we heard any gargoyle call him Goliath until well into modern times. Everyone called him "my love" or "my brother" or whatnot. So, yeah, I think it was pretty much for human use only. Of course, everyone was aware of it anyway. Lex said "Except for Goliath, we don't have names".

And I admit, given the popularity of the Bible and Goliath's ability to read and his studious nature, I find it hard to believe he hadn't read at least some of the Bible. It should also be noted that when the Captain refered to the "Philistine giant that fought David" Goliath's expression seemed to indicate familiarity with the tale. But maybe Goliath only ever interpreted the name the way the Captain meant it (as a powerful warrior) rather than where Katharine went with it (a bully and a savage). Goliath knew that his namesake was generally an antagonist in the Bible, but that the humans gave him the name due to his stature and strength, not his story.

Greg> The third decade is the twenties.

Goliath's name as an insult: Being Goliath was an avid reader, I've no doubt he would have read the Bible - which is why I brought up the point of the name possibly being given to him as an insult. What better way to offend an entire clan of Gargoyles-a group of very proud, honorable beings that don't choose names for themselves but to name their leader after a Biblical villain. Whether Goliath takes offence to it or not-the name being given to him in itself could have well been a joke amongst the humans of the period. Food for thought.

I was looking over the archive pages and came across one of the occasional discussions about Quest for Glory that I've been a part of. If anyone is interested in playing the series that I've noted has some interesting connections to Gargoyles and other Weisman series both thematically and vocally, they're now all available for download at GOG.com for $10. That's five interconnected games (long before Mass Effect, thought not nearly as integrative) for $2 a pop with a visually-updated version of the original for free! There's also the fan update to the second game at AGDInteractive.com.

So would spoilers also include Spectacular Spiderman and Gargoyles as well? Even though neither show has episodes that are currently airing? I do genuinely want to follow the rules, but that seems counterintuitive to encouraging discussion and making it easy for new people to interact with the community. I mean in Gargoyles
Demona's involvement
in the
events leading to the Wyvern Massacre
is a pretty big deal. It also happens in the 5-part *pilot of the series*, which aired eighteen years ago. I don't think it's unreasonable that someone would expect that to be fair game for untagged discussion in a community devoted to Greg Weisman's work.

The fact that Greg accepts questions up to and including Young Justice episodes that have aired in the US also contributed to my confusion as to where that line is of SPOILER VS Safe to talk about. To be honest I'm still a little unclear.

Gargoyles need not apply.

You know, I've always thought that he never really started thinking of himself as "Goliath" until after he woke up in the 20th century and the rest of the clan took names for themselves. Before that, "Goliath" was simply a human label for humans' convenience. As far as he was concerned, it might as well have been a serial number.

"My kind have no names but You humans call me "Goliath".

And sorry for the double post, but I forgot to mention that as of today, I am now 30 years old. Neat-o, huh?

My boyfriend and I pulled out a random Gargoyles episode to watch earlier and it wasn't until the second act of "The Price" that I realized how ironic the episode choice was.

Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Growing old terrifies you, doesn't it?" - Hudson, "The Price"

Arlo> Interesting thoughts, but I imagine that if they did indeed name Goliath as an insult he might've not even noticed. I doubt he was all that knowledgeable about the names of minor characters in human religions.
Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]
"...nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." - Ripley, "Aliens"

Interesting thoughts about Goliath being given his name as an insult. That would add another layer to the Captain's line "Goliath, we named you well it seems. You are as good a soldier as the Philistine giant who fought David," in Awakening Part 1. It would make the line more flip, whereas I'd always seen it more like the Captain had given Goliath that name because of what a good soldier that guy was.

One thing, though, is it doesn't seem like Goliath to go along with a name that's an insult. He usually tends to have enough dignity not to take an insult, but not to overreact to it either, as when he tells Elisa to "Just ignore him," when the fire guy says "What's that smell? It must be coming from the human!"in The New Olympians.

But then again, Goliath was still tryig to maintain some measure of peace with the humans when he would have been given the name, as is evident from the way he bows to Princess Katherine after she calls him a monster in Awakening Part 1. So I guess I could see him accepting the insult of the name gracefully in order to keep the peace, just as he bowed to her that time.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Hush, now - spoilers!

Okay then, back to an earlier discussion. I mentioned a while back that the next Gargoyles episode SFDebris has on his slate is The Mirror. The one after that is Enter Macbeth. Which one do you all look forward to more? While I have to go with The Mirror, I still look forward to his commentary on a really significant episode in terms of plot and character development being saddled with arguably the worst animation of the series.

J29: not everyone in here is FROM the US. In Canada-only 8 episodes of YJ have aired. Although I've been keeping track online, It's been hard since Warner Brothers has been pulling down the episodes as fast as people put them up. That may change once Cartoon Network premiers in Canada later this year. So far, the preview for the Channel hasn't shown clips of the show.
Wingless

Chip> It would also be helpful if you indicated outside of spoiler tags exactly what you were spoiling inside the tags, otherwise people might highlight them expecting to know what you were talking about.
Supermorff

J29>

If it involves any kind of plot spoiling, for ANYTHING, be it
Red Arrow is really a Cadmus Clone
to
Harry Osborn isn't really the Green Goblin, it was a misdirect by the real Green Goblin, Norman Osborn
to even
Brooklyn is swallowed by the actual Phoenix, which was imprisoned within the Phoenix Gate, atop the Flatiron Building one night he vanishes and in the span of what appears to be 40 seconds to Broadway and Angela, he travels forty years bouncing back and forth through time. He picks up a mate, has a kid, and an egg due to hatch soon on said trip.
ALL qualify for a spoiler wrap. Heck, just for safety's sake, you should wrap even NON-Greg Weisman works within a spoiler tag, just in case
For example, if anyone besides me reads Rick Riordan, in his latest installment of the Kane Chronicles, two characters from his Heroes of Olympus Series make a cameo.
The idea is simply this: DON'T SPOIL THINGS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T READ/WATCHED THEM YET. So stuff "Earthlings" should still be Spoiler-Tagged even after "Alienated" airs.

Chip

Question: I may have missed this, but why are people spoiler-tagging episodes that have already aired in the US? Is there some kind of of designated period between when something airs and when it's 'safe' to talk about? i.e. once Alienated airs it's okay to about Earthlings without spoiler tags?

Thanks.

J29

Regarding "Earthlings":
I actually really enjoyed the structure of the episode, with the heroes on Rann affected by the return of the Kroloteans from Earth.

Plus, in terms of getting to know the new characters, having Gar tagging along with M'gann and Conner is an easier "sell" than having Tim, La'gaan, and Jaime running around without any established characters.
According to this, Hudson may not have even had a name, as such:
<i>Alan writes...

Pre-Hudson, Hudson
So, if the only Scottish Gargoyle with a proper name is the leader (i.e. Goliath) and Hudson was the leader before Goliath, what was his name?
Greg responds...

Honestly, I haven't decided (though I have some candidates in mind). But I wouldn't assume definitely that what applied in Goliath's day would also apply in Hudson's.</i>

Of course, this was back in 2003 - you think ity wouold break the Q&A rules to ask it again, to see if Greg had made a decision since then?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I don't think "soldier" was a common term in the 900's in Scotland. I think they would have used some form of "warrior". I think Demona came up with that one on her own for him, maybe because she thought "Hudson" was too silly (and wanted to dig at him anyway).

The Humans call him "Goliath" because he is a huge monster like the biblical Goliath. They kept on calling him "Goliath" and it stuck.

Battle Beast - [Canada]
I DID IT!!! I WATCHED ALL 485 BEST PICTURE NOMINEES IN ONE YEAR!!!

Re naming Goliath: Considering the way the other soldiers and people in general regard the Gargoyles back in 994 - naming Goliath when Gargoyles didn't normally take names - maybe it would be a insult in itself to name him-not to mention naming him after a biblical villain. Goliath didn't sound all too thrilled when he said to Elisa "My kind have no names, but you humans call me Goliath". Of course that could have been for several reasons, but he's well aware what the name refers to-and although it fits his physical description, Goliath couldn't be further from 'who' he is.
Wingless

Maybe Malcolm called Hudson "Soldier" back in the day. That would add another layer to Demona's almost mocking use of "Old Soldier"
Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
"Brave words for a man who hides his face behind a hood." - Goliath, "The Journey."

I imagine Prince Malcolm named Goliath because "things need names". Malcolm likely had names for other gargoyles that he regularly interacted with (such as Hudson/Mentor) but they didn't stick. And giving Goliath the name of a Biblical bad guy fits right in with Malcolm's use of the gargoyles as both protectors and "boogey-men".

I haven't seen "Earthlings" yet, but
I picked up that in it, the new character Adam Strange recites parts of "Jabberwocky".
That got me wondering: what other references to history, literature, and legend have appeared in "Young Justice"? I've made a list from what I've seen (the first eight episodes), and what I've picked up at places like the Young Justice Wiki, but it's probably incomplete. Here's what I have so far; please let me know if I've missed anything.
In the first episode, Aqualad brings up the Greek myth of Cadmus sowing the dragon's teeth and producing a crop of warriors when the team are investigating Cadmus Labs.
Most of "Denial" is set in Salem.
The Sword of Beowulf was featured in "Secrets".
In "Misplaced", the wizards splitting the world into two worlds, one inhabited by children and one by adults, cast their spell at Roanoke Island, and mention the Pied Piper in their incantation.
An allusion to the Martians succumbing to Earth bacteria in "The War of the Worlds" by H. G. Wells in "Performances".
Cheshire wears a cat mask, which means her name must be an allusion to the Cheshire Cat (returning to Lewis Carroll).
Are there others that I've missed or don't know about? Since I've only seen the first eight episodes, there probably are.

Todd Jensen
I'm a Hufflepuff!

Matt> That's true, but it does raise the point of why Goliath got a name when Hudson didn't. Maybe the humans sort of picked up on the title and called him "the Mentor" or "the gargoyle mentor" or whatever. Then Goliath takes over and they go "No, you can't be called Mentor now. *He* was the Mentor. You need to be called something else."
Supermorff

I was wondering about that too. But I thought Mentor was only really used by the younger gargoyles of Goliath's generation (like how Coldstone used it in "Legion"). Not so much of a name as a title (like father, friend, love, etc.)

I don't think the humans would've called Hudson Mentor, but I could be wrong.

Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]
"...nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." - Ripley, "Aliens"

Arlo> I think Greg mentioned that Hudson may have had a name (or, at least, a more common designation) while leader of the clan, but that he stopped using it when Goliath took over. I think the name Greg favoured was Mentor.
Supermorff

I always just assumed Goliath got the name because he was very frightening and intimidating compared to his peers back in the old days. Or at least even more so than his peers anyway.
Jose Bremen

I also liked his analysis of Demona's character. Very interesting analysis, and it makes a lot of sense. Especially if you consider how deep in denial she is, that she's had this need to take action to do what Goliath won't, but then it ultimately harms her clan, and she can't come to terms with the fact that it's her doing, so a thousand years later, she's sunk further into denial, further into trying to force what she thinks she should be done on the clan.

Also, his point about Goliath receiving a name from the humans while his predecessor did not was an interesting one. Has anyone asked about that on Ask Greg?

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

I truly LOLed at his explanation of why darts keep being used.

I've tweaked the layout a little. If you notice things looking weird hold down the shift key and press your browser's refresh button. The only change you might notice is if you've got a wide screen the layout will go a little wider to make use of the extra space. If something is broken, just yell.
Gorebash - [gorebash@s8.org]

"Earthlings:"
Just a handful of reactions, like how I loved when Superboy described his relationship to Miss M as a "long story, and weird" -- made me actually laugh aloud, hehe. I also especially liked Beast Boy's scenes with Miss Martian. Those 'peaceful' days in Qurac must seem like more than a few summer vacations ago.

When it started In Media Res, I couldn't help but think of a few other Greg Weisman productions that have used it before. Not saying there was any direct reference to any show, just that I know Greg's fond of using that story framing device from time to time. :)

Oh, and definitely can't forget the awesome shout out to Lewis Carroll, not to mention Miss M's own shrug that Adam was just living up to his name.

Speaking of Miss M, I personally wouldn't rule out that Beast Boy wasn't the only motivation for going "too far" with the Krolotean -- part of me thinks she only took it out on the alien *after* she learned the truth behind those 16 hours (with a revelation that's likely to be very troubling . . . ).

One thing that continues to impress me with this series as a whole is the dedication to the realism of multiple languages around the world and (now) the galaxy. Whether its a quick spell of translation like in season one's "Downtime" that just keeps the show rolling (mostly just to get rid of the subtitles, I guess) to this episode where the sudden lack of translation was key to realizing that Miss M and Beast Boy were probably in danger, this show is really making an effort to be consistent.

Makes me really miss Greg having a chance to bring that to his other series (though we did see him bring more attention to language in, say, the [I}Bad Guys Trade as well as other little realistic details, like more accurate Moon phases that can be seen in the rest of the Gargoyles' SLG run.
Don't really want to revert the conversation to just the revised "GUIDELINES FOR ASKING A QUESTION" page, but I did have a comment. Now, as a whole, the thirteen guidelines are largely self explanatory (at least for those folks that, as mentioned last week, actually take the time to read them) . . . and it frankly might just feel *more* redundant (the general turn for these revised guidelines it seems), when clearly the first guideline states that any requests for spoilers will get a SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT if not risk deletion. But I do wonder if its best to also mention that posting *actual* spoilers will get swiftly deleted (as per: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=932).

Now, I don't believe any country is playing the second season of Young Justice at a faster rate than the United States, but should history repeat itself, it couldn't hurt to have it in the guidelines . . . and closer to the top of the list.

Todd: I noticed that as well. One reason is that
the villains of the episode are the alien Kroloteans, none of whom are individually named and all of whom "speak" in the same inhuman shrieks - which I'll go out on a limb and declare is probably an uncredited Nolan North.

Rebel> Well, yes, I more or less agree with your interpretation. However
I thought, rather than intentionally lobotomising the Krolotean captain out of vengeance, she was interrogating him. She was just ripping through his mind, extracting the information she was looking for (what happened during the 16 hours) without worrying about what damage she might be doing at the same time. Of course, that's not to say that his threatening Beast Boy's safety didn't have something to do with her ruthlessness.
What did everyone think of "Earthlings"?
I enjoyed this episode a great deal more than last week's episode. I guess because of the smaller cast, this week's ep felt a lot tighter to me.

I'm enjoying Beast Boy as a character. I was concerned he might be annoying but I find him to be a fun and genuine kid, and I like how dark his back-story is. Interesting how characters on this show often have verbal tics or catchphrases. I like Beast Boy's "noted" more than I liked "Hello Megan" from last season, but I hope the "blow this popsicle stand" bit is for this episode only.

Adam Strange is a likable character to me and I LOVED the part when he started reciting the Jabberwocky poem (and later when Alana used it as well). I hope we'll be seeing more of Adam and Alana.

Oh Superboy. After last week's episode I (and I think most other viewers) assumed that M'Gann dumped him, but we learn that it's the other way around. We also get confirmation on the show of what I've read in those Cartoon Network bios that Superboy will never visibly age. I honestly feel bad for the guy--he'll always look like a 16 year old, plus he'll never have his full Kryptonian powers. Still, I guess he is...more interesting this way. He never explicitly spells out WHY he dumped M'Gann but his reaction to her lobotomizing that Krolotean at the end of the episode strongly suggests that he dumped her because he didn't approve of her ruthlessness--we know this is something she's done at least once before (Psimon) but I'm betting she's done it other times during the time skip as well, which is a scary thought.

Speaking of M'Gann, she just keeps getting more interesting. After "Image" I liked her character a lot more. She was willing to (effectively) kill Psimon to keep her secret. Which, though ruthless, is more-or-less understandable considering how frightening her true form would be to humans. But now, she doesn't have any secrets to keep, yet she's still willing to lobotomize others. It would be one thing if she'd mind-wiped that Krolotean captain in the heat of battle, but she did it after he no longer posed a threat, seemingly out of vengeance for threatening Beast Boy's safety. She is one scary lady.
10. Please make separate posts for each topic you want to address or ask questions about.

Considering that I've bent that rule myself, I probably shouldn't be the one posting it. :)

8. No original ideas masquerading as questions. Asking what Demona did during World War II is fine. Asking if Demona tried to assassinate Hitler during World War II is an idea masquerading as a question and is not all right. Again: automatic DELETION.

Er... 6. If you are asking multiple questions in one post, please number your questions. And if you're asking more than five questions then create a separate post.

5. Please refrain from asking questions - even non-spoiler questions - that it seems obvious will be answered by the end of the season.
