Battle Beast: I'm in the US

KingCobra582: The contents are an EXACT copy of the movie club version. Even the disc name for these new DVDs is "DMC_Gargoyles_D<disc number>". DMC being Disney Movie Club.

Sorry for the double post, but:

Gorebash, do you live in Canada or did you get the set in the US?

Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

As I said in my previous post, it's the same as the Movie Club set, so yes, it is barebones.

Visited Walmart this morning and picked up the new S2V2 release. Here are some images of the packaging:

Tini> Yah. One spot for three discs. Sigh.

The package art is good, but the choice of screen captures on the back is a bit puzzling. Also, the wording of the text on the back is the same as the other issue, and - quite frankly - doesn't do the set justice.

That's the score from the 1982 Rankin & Bass film The Flight of Dragons which is where I got my name from. This particular score was arranged by Carl Johnson who did the music for Gargoyles. It was to be used in a live-action version of the movie that was going to come out next year. However production has since been canceled.

Can't believe how bad my radar has become. Next week I'll discover that a live-action Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind film is coming out this year and Greg is producing it. Remember, no cuts![1]

The Earth still revolves around the sun, right?

Actually, I'm never sure of that during winter. I leave for work before the sun comes up, my office has no windows, and I leave after the sun sets. Only on Saturday do I find out for certain whether or not things went really wrong during the week.

Also, how it is package on the inside? Still one spot for three discs?

I've already picked it up at my Walmart. They are already available here in Canada (but not on the Wal Mart Website). It is the same as the Disney Movie Club Exclusive, but with new packaging. The Package art is much better. The discs have different art, too, if you can call it art. It's jsut a grey background with a big "TV Y7" on it. The disc content is the same.

Frankly, I think Disney underestem ated how well this disc set would sell; I think the Movie Club was overwhelmed and the big brass saw this as a chance to make more money.

Now if they'd only put it all into a deluxe "complete series" package with the comics and maybe a 10th bonus disc with some nifty bonus features. But I'm totally dreaming.

What does the cover art look like for Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 2 newer version and will it be the same at general retail stores and everywhere when it comes out 1/13/15

It looks like that is the January 13 general release and Walmart got an early exclusive: https://twitter.com/dave_lambert/status/522718530719215616

Is anyone familiar with that particular release? I thought the new version was supposed to be out in January. It has an "Only at Walmart" sticker but I don't see it on their website.

Seems like Gargoyles S2V2 is now available at Walmart and it has a different cover, too:

TODD> Don't be silly, Todd...

Everyone knows Joan of Arc was actually granted magic powers by alien bunny-cats. ;)

This is the pinnacle of human emotions. Warmer than Hope. Deeper than Despair... It's Love.

Todd> Hey, maybe that's why her French accent is so bad: she's basing it off of what she remembers from learning it in the 1400s! Back in the day, she totally would have passed for a native flawlessly. ;)
Ross

If Demona *had* encountered Joan of Arc, though, I wonder whether Joan would have commented on how dreadful her French accent was (though French probably sounded a bit different in 1429 from the mid 1990's).

While on the subject of 15th century historical figures, this is a creativity demon that I've speculated upon, though I don't think it all that likely.

I once asked Greg Weisman where Demona and Macbeth were during the 15th century, the period covered by Shakespeare's cycle of history plays; he replied that while he wasn't sure, he thought Demona might have been in France during the time of Joan of Arc.

In Shakespeare's "Henry VI Part One", Joan of Arc is portrayed as a witch in league with demons rather than a saint, though she claims to be Heaven-sent (Shakespeare and his audience were English, remember, and still rather sore about being driven out of France) - but her demon patrons abandon her in her final battle, leading to her being captured by the English and burnt at the stake.

From these two, I wondered - what if Demona had secretly given some sort of aid to Joan, but then abandoned her, leading to her capture (it wouldn't be the first time she'd done that to a historical figure maligned by Shakespeare)? Subtle help, of course (certainly not appearing on the battlefield - perhaps just sending her the voices and visions urging her to offer her services to the Dauphin).

Though the idea amused me, I don't think it likely. I doubt that Demona would have had any interest in the English being driven out of France (unless, just possibly, their attempts to conquer it were interfering with one of her schemes and she needed to find some way of turning the tide of the Hundred Years' War against her); more likely, if she gave any thought to the war, she simply hoped that the English and the French would all kill each other, and that the Black Death would return to finish off the survivors. (Though she might have disliked the English slightly more than the French, for being Canmore's allies.)

I doubt that Greg would have seriously attempted such a thing in "Gargoyles" anyway; having Joan of Arc inspired by a humanity-hating gargoyle would be too controversial. (There's a reason why "Henry VI Part One" doesn't get performed that often.) But I still found myself wondering about it.

("Rain of the Ghosts", of course, does show some influence from Joan of Arc in Charlie's name. And Rain herself might be an analogue to Joan in her ability to see ghosts and her mission to restore the fortunes of her people.)

I can never tell if people are genuinely offended by Columbus Day or just need an excuse to feel incredulous for like three days because for such an offensive holiday, I rarely hear about it outside of when the holiday is actually happening.

It's a gross holiday, but I've long suspected nobody gives nearly as much of a shit as they claim they do. Come November people will forget about the grave injustice of the Native Americans because in November people will remember to complain about Christmas songs.

Harlan of the Ghosts
You should've warned us, Raven. Reading isn't just fundamental. It's dangerous.

I've heard that there may be evidence that the Romans might have made it to the Americas before Columbus too. Here's some more info on that (it's Wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt):

Doh, my bad, missed "European" in your comment.

But why are we celebrating the arrival of the first Europeans anyway?

Greg Bishansky

I believe the Native Americans were the first, but that's just me.

And Columbus wasn't even the first European to set foot in the "New World;" the Vikings were, sometime in the late 10th or early 11th century AD I believe.

MATT> Adding to the chorus. Well done.

On another note, I had a terrific time at New York Comic Con. Some of my personal highlights.

- Giving Marina Sirtis gift art that I commissioned from Mara Cordova. She is a soccer fanatic, and an avowed supporter of the Tottenham Hotspurs... of her two iconic characters in their colors. Marina absolutely loved it. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/10672055_10152797024443615_8158898871994376932_n.jpg?oh=ff9d653aa01d9492dea6cac4274e936d&oe=54BBF6B8&__gda__=1421454317_79ee0b2b1c05ef236e9f8542334900cc
- Meeting Jonathan Frakes and having him sign all three of my Gargoyles DVD's. He was exactly as charming as you'd expect. He teased me a bit, I teased him back. Fun guy.
- Hanging out at Christopher Jones' booth a lot. We talked Young Justice, Gargoyles, CONvergence, and more. Great guy.
- Having dinner with Vanessa Marshall on Saturday night. Lovely woman, very fun to hang out with.

My biggest disappointment was that I wasn't able to afford Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, and LeVar Burton's autographs. Except for Patrick Stewart, the entire TNG cast was there. But I blew my autograph budget on Jonathan, and while I love the rest, Xanatos was high priority than Coldstone, Puck and Anansi. Aw well, I'm sure there will be a next time.

Good times. And more good times are coming.

Todd: Makes me wonder if Columbus ever wound up on the Ghost Keys at any point in the history of a certain novel series...

Matt: I shall add my voice to those offering you congratulations, and wishing you and your future students nothing but the best!

"If someone ever tells me it's a mistake to have hope...well then, I'll just tell them they're wrong. And I'll keep telling them until they believe. No matter how many times it takes." - Madoka Kaname

Columbus never even made it to what's now the U.S. - just some islands in the Caribbean and a bit of South America. (And he was so convinced he'd reached China that he made everyone on board sign a document saying that's where they were - with a tone of "Sign it if you know what's good for you.")

Today, I reread the Don Rosa Donald Duck story "The Lost Charts of Columbus", a sequel to the famous Carl Barks "Golden Helmet" story, in which Donald and his nephews have to find evidence for a lot of pre-Columbian visitors to the Americas from Europe (and even Asia) - who were all, incidentally, actual real or legendary past visitors, such as St. Brendan the Navigator - to foil the returning villains from "The Golden Helmet", Azure Blue and his lawyer Sharkey. And it also points out how Columbus and his predecessors "discovered" a continent that the Indians or Native Americans had been already living in for thousands of years previously (with a neat little twist at the end that I won't spoil).

MATT - Congratulations!

Greg B> I wholeheartedly concur. I first began questioning this "holiday" in grade school and have become all the more opposed as I grew up. Even by the logic of those who support the holiday, there seems to be far more superior individuals to commemorate.

And speaking of grade school, today I was offered a teaching position at an elementary school. After a long decade of trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and a few years of school, I've finally landed a job that I'm very excited about. I'll be running the school's science lab and hopefully passing on my passion for science to a younger generation. Very psyched!
