Masterdramon: Well, I never meant to be unhelpful. I know that for next time, if there is. That gives more reason to have a delete option in the comments section.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

Thanks. I got the impression you did want me to resubmit them because you said "and if it turns out I was wrong I do apologize" and the only way it could turn out that you had been wrong is if Greg answers them.
B - [brownie2 at buffalo dot edu]

B: They would have a better chance getting through separately than together. I might also advise you alter question #2 slightly to ask about changelings in general, rather than Nimue specifically.

I still very much doubt Greg will answer them, but that'll at least put them safely within the guidelines.

Green Lantern's Nightlight: Yes, I noticed that. I was going to quietly delete the post once I got to that part of the queue (Ask Greg only allows you to approve/delete posts one at a time, in order of submission).

Drawing attention to it is literally the least helpful thing you can do.

Speaking directly to Masterdramon, do you want me to resubmit them separately, or together?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the off-line status of the site. I was worried it was shut down or the people in charge had found a way to block my IP address.

The "dragons" one is new to me. I had a lot of fun writing Ratatosk as the narrator, providing a sort of "squirrel's-eye view" of the Norse myths and periodically tagging along in one or another of the stories (with the notion that from time to time, the eagle and Nidhog take so long in coming up with insults for each other that they give him a few days off). In another scene with a "Gargoyles" hommage, Loki, after cutting off Sif's hair and then realizing that a) an angry Thor is looking for the culprit and b) Loki's the most likely suspect, changes into a squirrel and hides in Ratatosk's home in Yggdrasil with a tone of "If anyone asks, I'm your cousin from the grove of Barri, and haven't been anywhere near Thor's house", while helping himself to Ratatosk's store of nuts, to Ratatosk's annoyance. Not that the disguise works; Thor simply hauls Loki out by the scruff of the neck, and Odin subjects him to a "Revert" (the "Gargoyles" hommage in that scene - used by both the Archmage in "Avalon Part Two" and Oberon in "The Gathering Part One").

Todd> Yep; that'll do it. I've run into that problem in post previews before.

Ah, Ratatoskr. It amuses me how often he's popped up recently in games I'm aware of - though in one, SHE and Hraesvelgr are turned into dragons alongside Nidhoggr.

And as evidence of my previous assertion, I tried using the normal unique characters for the above names; the preview blanked.

BRAINIAC - I also posted a quote (copied from the original file) from a Norse mythology-based story I'd written, which included the quotation marks that I'd copied from the file (with a different look than the quotation marks here) - those probably caused it. I left it out of the reconstructed post, which could explain it.

The quote I tried posting was from a retelling of the Norse myths I wrote from the perspective of Ratatosk (the squirrel who ran up and down Yggdrasil doing messenger service for the eagle at the top and Nidhog at the bottom); I included a few "Gargoyles" allusions in it. The chief of those was from my version of Thor's visit to Utgard-Loki (not to be confused with the regular Loki). Those of you who know the story remember how Utgard-Loki used illusions to pit Thor against various cosmic forces (such as a wrestling match with a personification of Old Age), and revealed the truth to him at the end. I modelled Utgard-Loki's speech-pattern on Xanatos, and gave his explanation of what really went on to Thor the tone of one of Xanatos's "tag-speeches", concluding it with "So I've found this encounter most informative. I needed to know what you were capable of doing, and now that I know, I can promise you that I will never let you come anywhere near Utgard again. You're much too dangerous for me to allow that to happen."

Todd> I know unique characters tend to cause a post to blank out. The blanking effect also happened last week on Chip's attempted "Eighth" post for I presume the same reason as yours. Are there any non-standard characters that come to mind from the original attempt?

I don't know what happened to my post, so I'll just have to reconstruct it from memory.

I think it would be wisest to not submit "in-universe" questions (unless they're to better understand a televised episode), simply because they're most likely going to get a "No spoilers" response - so no point in submitting them. (Though I *am* glad to see a few "Gargoyles"-related questions amid the flood of "Young Justice"-related questions.)

I looked up in the archives about what Greg had to say about the Vanir - and not only is he evasive about what they are, but he also indicated that some of the Aesir might not be members of the Third Race - though that's all he said. I wonder if the Lost Race might be involved - but obviously there's no point in asking Greg about it. And maybe those of the Aesir who weren't Third Race were Third Race/human hybrids (Odin did father children on mortal women).

B> I used to assume all the various supernatural races in Norse mythology, including the Light Elves, were just different tribes of the Third Race. That was before Greg revealed the Vanir were not Children.

Now I assume nothing.

Well, I was classing them together as Oberon's Children-related questions, the one about Light Elves isn't a spoiler request and I was hoping the one about Nimue would not get a "no comment" either but something about the mechanics of mortal vs. Third Race sorcery and who Oberon's ban and Avalon's prohibition on sorcery applies to. Do you want me to resubmit them separately?
B - [brownie2 at buffalo dot edu]

For the sake of keeping the queue manageable, I've been tightening up on questions that're almost certain to get nothing but a "NO SPOILERS" response from Greg.

Based on the evidence of what he has chosen (and not chosen) to answer the past couple years, pretty much anything to do with Nimue likely qualifies.

It's also kinda iffy on Guideline #10. You could arguably class both questions under the "Oberon's Children" label but the Light Elves/Dark Elves and Nimue subjects are largely unrelated.

You are, of course, free to disagree with my judgment call there, and if it turns out I was wrong I do apologize. Unfortunately, Ask Greg really isn't set up in such a way that there can be an appeals process.

"Come on. Just say yes." - Jasper

Can anyone tell me why the following question would not have been approved?

"1. If, as Goliath says, the Vikings called the Oberati "Dark Elves", then what about the Light Elves that are also present in Viking mythology? Were they more myth than fact, were they angels (like the ones in Jacob's vision in the issue "The Rock"), or are they also members of the Third Race but Goliath only chose to mention the Dark Elves for some reason? In Norse myth, Light Elves were like what we would think of as Tolkien Elves and Dark Elves were like Tolkien Dwarves.

2. You've indicated that Nimue was the third daughter of Igraine and Gorlois, exchanged with the changeling Morgana. Does that make her magic mortal sorcery by definition? Except mortal sorcery isn't allowed on Avalon, where stolen human children would logically be raised. Did she not know any magic before Merlin taught her (as in the legend) despite her upbringing by the Third Race, or is she able to manipulate the energies of Avalon like the Magus learned to, thus technically staying within the prohibition?"

GLN> It's the reason my father gave me that logon back in the days of AOL. I've stuck with it in most cases.

I thought there might have been an error in my calculations. (That was certainly more likely than Euler being wrong, anyway.) Thanks, Brainiac.
Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

Paul> You're forgetting to stay imaginary/complex. The natural log of negative 1 is invalid among real numbers, but i*pi outside of that set. Basically, -pi^2=(i*pi)^2 which is a step you already did previously. The sides are indeed equivalent and the identity holds.

In other words, be very cautious when challenging Euler.

Maybe Brainiac could help me with a mathematical conundrum.

According to Euler, e^(pi*i)+1=0.
So subtracting 1 from both sides, e^(pi*i)=-1.
Taking the natural logarithm of both sides, pi*i=ln(-1).
Squaring both sides, -pi^2=ln(-1)^2

Yet the function (ln(x)^2) does not seem to have a real value at x=-1, even though according to my calculations it should be negative pi squared. Is there an error in my calculations, or was Euler wrong, or what?

I'd thought of Castaway playing Malcolm as well; it would certainly be appropriate casting in light of his ancestry (though once it's time for Malcolm and Macduff to become allies, grand awkwardness will almost certainly ensue....). And he'd have the privilege of getting the last speech in the play (assuming that it reaches that far and the force that's compelling everyone to act in "Macbeth" doesn't get disrupted before the final scene).

I considered Vinnie as the Porter, but then remembered that he'd be away in Japan while those events were taking place (assuming he can keep his job over there - of course, given his track record....).

The Weird Sisters (whom I understand are supposed to be behind the "Weird Macbeth") would most likely play themselves. (I wonder if they'd keep the Hecate scenes or drop them.)

Todd Jensen

TODD> My first instinct is that Lexington would play their son. But it could also be Gnash. Depends on what roles Brooklyn and Katana have in this.

John Castaway as Malcolm would be interesting.

Greg Bishansky

The Spectacular Gargoyles RP did an adaption of the "Weird Macbeth" story, back in the day. The only casting I can remember off the top of my head was Owen as the Porter.

"Tak does not require us to think of Him, only that we think." ~Grag Bashfull Bashfullson

I hope that someday, we'll get to see the "Weird Macbeth" story at last. I still think it would be a lot of fun to see that one, particularly since I'm still curious about much of the casting.

For example, we know that Goliath would have played Macduff and Elisa Lady Macduff. In Shakespeare's play, the Macduffs have a son who talks with his mother for a bit before Macbeth's henchmen show up and butcher them both; I'm curious who'd be playing "Young Macduff", in light of the casting of his parents.

I wonder if Banquo and Fleance (Macbeth's henchmen who later entered Castaway's employ, not their Shakespearean namesakes) would be in it - they'd be well-suited, I think for Macbeth's hired murderers (and it would make a neat piece of irony to have them go after the Banquo and Fleance of the play). I can't help wondering either what the play's take would be on the enigmatic "Third Murderer" (a guy who shows up to help Macbeth's hired murderers do in Banquo, claiming to have been sent by Macbeth - but we've only his word for it).

And as I've mentioned once, many performances of "Macbeth" have Macbeth and Lady Macbeth be - ah - highly charged towards each other. Just imagine if this was one of them, in light of who's playing those two!
