TODD> Well the Roman Magus was magic user in the GU, I'm reminded of a quote from Marvel's Loki...

"After all, the first thing a sorcerer of quality learns is to make himself as difficult to kill as possible!"

Last day to order the Gargoyles t-shirt on 80sTees:

Not sure if they're going to reach their funding goal. Too bad. With the promo code you can get it 20% off. Just sayin'.

Both of these ideas, I should say, are inspired by RSC productions of Shakespeare plays. Ulysses in Troilus and Cressida was played, not exactly like Xanatos, but certainly as a manipulative trickster in a similar vein. And he had a ponytail and goatee, so...

Todd> The Roman Magus had access to the Phoenix Gate, so there are ways around the age issue. (But you're right that I had not thought about that before.)

But as for the Trojan massacre, what if the myth got confused? Troy was sacked when the defenders were sleeping, not at night. It's just humans who think that everyone sleeps at night...

The chronology makes it unlikely that the soothsayer in SHakespeare's Roman plays is the same as the Roman Magus. The Roman Magus cast the Spell of Humility in A.D. 10, fifty-four years after Caesar's assassination; if the soothsayer was a very young man when he warned Caesar to beware the Ides of March, he could just possibly have been the Roman Magus, but I think it'd be a stretch.

But that look at the Trojan War certainly sounds appealing; I'd thought of the similarities between Odysseus and Xanatos myself. (By coincidence, I've been reading a couple of books about Odysseus's journey home from Troy recently - one a retelling seen through the eyes of Odysseus's dog Argos, who receives word about his master's adventures back on Ithaca through visiting sea-gulls and other birds.) And a slaughter of a Trojan gargoyle clan would fit the savagery that attended the sack of Troy in the original Greek legend. (Though since Troy was sacked at night, the gargoyles would be slain in outright battle, not smashed in their stone sleep.)

I want to see Brooklyn in the time of the Caesars. Julius, perhaps, but Augustus certainly. Not necessarily in Rome, though. A lot of the trip could be spent in Egypt, for example. And he can meet the Roman Magus, who I assume is the Shakespearean soothsayer from both Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra.

Also the Trojan War, at which Odysseus reminds Brooklyn of Xanatos and Troy is defended by a gargoyle clan... wiped out by the Greeks when the city falls.

I'd like to see Brook visit the Paleozoic or Mesozoic to see the origins of gargates. Perhaps he'd have to protect them from extinction early in their evolution thus making sure his entire species (the First Race) would one day come to be.

In addition (or in lieu of that) it would be cool to have him interacting with prehistoric gargoyle clans. The equivalent of meeting cave men. Perhaps Brooklyn would help them develop in some cultural sense or perhaps he along with Fu-Dog would show them the value of domesticating the wild gargoyle beasts.

I always thought that Brooklyn would probably spend a few years in feudal Japan perhaps working on his combat skills as well as developing his relationship with Katana. I like to imagine the two of them having Seven Samurai like adventures with the Ishimura Clan of the era.

I also like to imagine that he'd visit the Golden Age of Piracy as a little callback to his Halloween costume and perhaps meet some famous pirates of the time like Edward Teach or Ned Low.
Perhaps in this timeline is where he loses his eye.
I've sometimes thought that it would be appropriate to have Brooklyn visit a few moments in New York history - maybe during the Dutch period when it was still New Amsterdam, and even an encounter with its last Dutch governor, Peter Stuyvesant (a fiery fellow with a wooden leg) - especially after reading Washington Irving's transformation of him into a mock-epic hero in "Deidrich Knickerbocker's History of New York". It'd give him a taste of the background of his new home, and match the glimpses of Scottish history we've already had in "Gargoyles" thanks to Scotland being the gargoyles' original home. Possibly also the fighting in the area during the American Revolution (such as George Washington's clashes with the British troops in the latter half of 1776, resulting in the British army taking New York but Washington and the Continental Army getting away) - with the possibility of looking into the hints of links between the Illuminati and the Founding Fathers.

So in the interest of stimulating discussion, I have a Timedancer related question. Other than those Greg has already confirmed such as 2198 or Feudal Japan, what other historical periods would y'all be interested in seeing Brooklyn and family visiting?

Gorebash: There's been an inordinate amount of spam in the TGS CR again. While I suppose one could claim that offers to join the Illuminati is Garg-related, I don't think it's really something the room needs.

4th.

Thanks for letting us know that, Todd.

And thanks, Inland, for letting us know about the shirt. I hadn't even heard of it before now. Not the greatest looking shirt, but not horrible. Being Gargoyles merch, I went ahead and ordered one to support the property. With the preorder discount code they offered, it really wasn't too pricey. I hope they can get a couple dozen more orders so the tshirt goes into production.

A "Gargoyles"-related post for today on a site dedicated to "what happened this day in British history".

2nd...

The officially licensed Gargoyles t-shirt on 80's Tees has only a less than a week left to be crowdfunded or it will disappear from lack of pre-orders. Not a great looking shirt (in my opinion), but it's something.
