I spotted an announcement at Comics Continuum about a new comic book series coming soon called "Mr. Beaver" about a talking beaver who serves as a secret agent; the person who came up with it listed as its inspirations several action-adventure cartoons from the 80's and 90's featuring non-human protagonists, one of which was "Gargoyles" (alongside "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Biker Mice from Mars").

The 25th anniversary of Gargoyles is coming up this october and just three weeks later Disney+ launches with the complete show ready to watch. I see lots of people in forums either going "oh my god, I haven't seen Gargoyles in almost 2 decades" or straight up saying "I have never seen Gargoyles but will definitely check out the show since everybody seems to praise it".
And that makes me happy. Gargoyles will soon be easily available for anyone to watch. No DVDs to buy (although they were nice too), no reruns you need to catch on TV, no shady places to download it from.

I'll be frank (and I don't mean this as a personal slant on anyone): I think that if your first reaction to that screenshot is "ewwww TGC" then you're missing the forest for the trees purty durn hard.

This is more or less unambiguous confirmation that:

A) Gargoyles is coming to Disney+
B) Gargoyles is coming to Disney+ at launch
C) Gargoyles is coming to Disney+ in its entirety

This is easily the most monumental thing to happen to our fandom in well over a decade. And I don't mean that as any kind of hyperbole. Before this, just about the only way for us to demonstrate support of the property this side of the 2010s was...a screencap comic that never actually came out?

Now, an entirely new generation of viewers - a userbase that dwarfs us here in this CR by a factor incalculable - will be able to experience the full series with the comfort and convenience of online streaming. Many of them for the first time.

That's huge. That's worth celebrating. And it's an opportunity we cannot possibly allow to slip through our fingers.

Because Disney is clearly investing in this service in a big, big way. I'm certain that in the early days of Disney+, they'll have people at the corporate level dedicated to little else apart from tracking streaming statistics.

So if "Gargoyles" winds up doing bang-up enough numbers to stand out as a significant outlier in those stats? That's going to make some people sit up and take notice. Take notice of the property in a way they haven't done, honestly, since the Touchstone movie was quietly shelved (over 15 years ago).

So frankly? I'm actually pretty happy that the TGC episodes are there. Not because I have any desire whatsoever to rewatch them, but because it demonstrates that "completionism" is a priority for whoever is doing the compiling of these old files for the service. That's the attitude we want them to have at this stage.

And really, there wasn't a reason for them not to include those episodes, assuming the digital files were readily available. This isn't like the DVDs, where a certain amount of fan demand needs to be assured upfront in order for the production of the discs to be a worthwhile investment. Once you make the business decision to add "Gargoyles," to the service, tacking on all three seasons probably comes at a negligible cost.

Regarding the SLG comics, while I'd be pretty freaking stoked for them to be legally, digitally available - especially given the price the long-out-of-print trades now command online - I doubt it's very likely.

DC Universe and Disney+ are clearly aiming to be very different animals. DCU touts itself as a one-stop shop to see the same set of characters (DC's heroes and villains) in as many types of media as possible, from movies to TV shows to comics to purchasable merchandise.

Disney+, on the other hand is aiming straight for the jugular of Netflix - an aggregate service with as wide variety of genres and tones as possible, but basically all of it being some form of film or show. Netflix doesn't have much in the way of reading material, and I doubt Disney+ sees that as a particularly valuable area to "outdo" them. And if they did...I kinda think back-issues of Marvel are a much likelier avenue they might take.

All of which is on top of the fact that I'm not sure Disney legally could upload the SLG comics to the service. Without a doubt, being the most well-lawyered company in the entire world, I'm sure they own the characters/concepts/etc. introduced in those comics lock, stock, and barrel.

But publishing rights are a different story. My understanding is that digital publishing rights are handled as a separate matter on the contractual side, and digital publishing of comics wasn't really much of a thing in 2006. Retroactively obtaining those rights, especially given that the comics were published by a comparatively miniscule third party (that...may or may not exist anymore? Slave Labor Graphics' Wikipedia page indicates they still exist, but I can't find evidence of anything they published past 2011 and their official website appears defunct) might well be far more of a headache than it's worth, given their relative obscurity compared to the show itself.

But that's all beside the point. I want to end this post on a positive rather than a negative note. Because let me be clear: this is a good day. A really good day. And it can be better, if we all do our part.

Because now, more than ever, it'll be important to #SpreadTheWord. On social media, in person, at cons and other fan events. We want everyone and their mother's uncle's babysitter to be binging the show, from the second Disney+ launches. Over and over and over again. Yes, including TGC - because from the perspective of the high-up execs, they neither know nor care about the difference.

It's indisputable that YJ's numbers on Netflix (not that any of us know what those numbers are, given Netflix's infamously close-chested business strategy, but anecdotally many articles have indicated they were atypically high) were a big factor, though not the only one, in convincing DC and Warner Bros. to renew for a third season. Maybe lightning can strike twice.

Obviously, there's no guarantee of that admittedly rosy hypothetical. But it's a chance. Which is better than we've had as a fandom in a long, long while.

And if we don't capitalize on this one...there's no telling when, or even if, we might get another.

They *did(* include some regular "Gargoyles" episodes as well as the "Goliath Chronicles".

blargh, I think Disney+ needs to take a page from DCUniverse and start uploading some canonical comics . . . ¬_¬

A Disney+ trial has already started in the Netherlands.

You will like what you see here, but don't let that distract you from what you'll see at the bottom:

At least a few news sites have noticed as well and it's beginning to spread that Gargoyles will be available. Personally, I'm waiting for direct confirmation, but I will admit to a spark of hope that has been dim for QUITE some time.

Yeah it's important to remember that the late 80's and 90's weren't just a renaissance for Disney movies but animation in general, especially in television.
It'd be foolish for Disney Plus to just discard all of their old material.

Thanks; I hadn't spotted those arrows at first.

Considering the vast library of content they already ave access to, I'd have been deeply disappointing if Disney+ had just turned out to be a buncha Star Wars and MCU shows.

Ugh sorry for the double (or triple). *to my observation, generally speaking. I really want to avoid making blanket statements of any kind.

Yeah, I think that Young Justice's absolutely massive success as a YA/Teen streaming series for DC bodes REALLY well for a Gargoyles reboot/reimagining/revival/whatever.

I saw a post-from last week about Halo's gender identity as well and wanted to comment. I'm not enby, so it didn't really offend me or anything, but the portrayal feels a bit shallow. For one, since they're basically a robot soul occupying a living human body, it kind of plays into the stereotype that most enby characters are some sort of inhuman thing or another, that there needs to be an explanation or reason for why they're enby.

On the other hand, Halo is one of the leads and definitely goes through a wide range of emotions and has a lot of dimensions to their character. But it also doesn't really... go anywhere? And I think it's tricky for it to go anywhere without it also becoming an issue. Which it shouldn't necessarily be.

So ultimately it's a mixed bag. I think the pronoun stuff is probably the least important aspect of it. Most of the enbys I know aren't particularly sensitive about their pronouns. A lot are pretty indifferent and/or they use different pronouns depending on how they identify that day. Though I know some who are an exception to that of course.

I'm gonna add that all of this is my observation, I am a cis guy (albeit a non-conforming one) and I'm actually really uncomfortable writing all this but I think it's a discussion that's very much worth having, and I am definitely no expert on the full spectrum. But generally speaking, identifying as enby is a very individualistic and personal thing. As opposed to a lot of other gender and sexual identities.

Definitely some serious potential here. Hey, if it worked for Young Justice . . .

I think a reboot would make the most sense. Not as in, a brand new show starring similar characters, but as in. A new show set in the same continuity featuring a lot of the same characters. I'm not sure just adapting the SLG comics straight for example would work after 20 years.

But that's just my opinion, and I could very easily be wrong. And personally I'd watch anything Gargoyles either way.

Aldrius

As far as I can tell, the only actual picture attached to the post is for "Duck Tales," but if you scroll up to the top of the feed, the caption for it is:

“Are you a morning or night person?” We’re a Disney Afternoon person tyvm

That at least seems to SUGGEST more shows from that era are coming, but no confirmation on which one(s).

Fingers crossed. This is easily the best opportunity we've had as a fandom in a looooooong time. If they post the first two seasons to Disney+ and the streaming numbers come back looking good...

Well, it's no guarantee. But like I said...a lot better chance than we've had in a long, long while.

I only saw an ad for the original "Duck Tales" - but I don't have an Instagram account, so I probably can't see the entire link.

Thanks for sharing the link with us, Matthew. And I'm glad to hear that Keith David's still so keen on his Goliath role; I thought he did a great job on it.

"Revival" is the word I'd rather use for more "Gargoyles" than "reboot", which suggests "brand-new continuity". The latter approach would defeat one of the main reasons for reviving the series - finding out what happened next to the characters and solving some of the mysteries left over. Continuity reboots work for some series (like the new "Duck Tales"), but I don't think that kind of approach would be right for "Gargoyles".

Todd Jensen

Thanks Algae.

Now this isn't really news to any of us, but I'm still glad that Keith David has such a strong investment in Gargoyles.

Saw a question from last week about Black Cat's age. I BELIEVE she was intended to be 19 during season 1 of Spectacular Spider-man. But I could be mis-remembering.

I had weird, mixed feelings about this season of YJ. I liked the strong character focus in the first half on our new, very different team. And I like the arc that Nightwing was going through. But in the second half it feels like they literally just dropped everything to start telling a Beast Boy vs. Gretchen Goode and Lex Luthor social media plot which had almost nothing to do with all the stuff that was set up in the first half. And that was a fine show in of itself (a bit... pedantic and long-winded perhaps) but it was such a strange gear-shift. And all the stuff I WAS invested in suddenly just took a backseat until the season was almost over.

Also sometimes the intricate schemes of the Light vs. the Justice League got to be a little too much for me. Especially anything to do with Batman. I like this version of Batman, I think this version of Batman is cool. But I don't really ultimately, personally care about him, or any of the members of the Justice League. I'm not invested in him as a human if that makes sense.

I still immensely enjoyed it, but I had some issues.
