Todd: Sounds like symbolism to me. Hudson is facing "the winter of his life," i.e., the time when you feel death approaching.

This didn't get mentioned in the pod, but it's appropriate for The Price to come right before Avalon because of the contrast. Hudson is contemplating his own mortality and the apparent coming end of their species, and then immediately after we see a "new Spring" of young gargoyles who can carry them into the future.

One thing just struck me as something that could have been discussed in that podcast - the wintry setting. This is one of three times in the series (the other two being the end of "Her Brother's Keeper" and "Re-Awakening") that we see snow in Manhattan in "Gargoyles". I wondered what inspired the snow for "The Price"; it must have been important, given that they'd be asking the animators to add the snow to the scenery (something you obviously wouldn't do casually).

Belated happy birthday to Greg!

Big thanks also to Gorebash for updating the site.

And to the Gregs and Jen, super podcast as ever on "The Price" and looking forward to Karine's perspective on "Avalon Part One" - very smart choice of guest for that one given that she reintroduced Mary and Finella after this episode for their appearance in "Bash". I particularly enjoyed the discussion of the Norse and Greek traditions of immortality.

One thing I sometimes wonder about "The Price" - it feels like this could have been a great episode mid-World Tour(with Brooklyn/Matt largely taking the roles of Goliath/Elisa). A wonderful, intimate character piece focusing on Hudson and Xanatos with strong roles for the Trio and Owen is always welcome but this tier already had "Double Jeopardy", "Upgrade" and "The Cage". However, it would have added a more distinct flavour to the stretch between "Kingdom" and "Cloud Fathers". Still, who'd sacrifice that scene of Goliath tearing the Macbeth robot apart?

I remember at the 2001 Gathering that one of the members of the creative team for "Gargoyles" (I forget whom) expressed a wish that, on at least one occasion when a gargoyle or someone else destroyed one of Elisa's guns, she'd indignantly cry "Hey, I have to pay for those!"
Todd Jensen

Jurgan > Ha, thanks. I remembered Greg mentioning this, but didn't realize there was a whole gargwiki devoted to it! I should have known there would be.

Happy Michaelmas, everyone!

One feature I particularly like about "The Price" is that it provided Xanatos with a good motive for capturing a gargoyle. The big challenge with his going after the clan was "What would he do with them once he caught them?" Originally, he'd planned to have them be his henchmen, doing things like stealing those discs from Cyberbiotics, but it became clear after "Awakening Part Five" that he wouldn't be able to keep duping them, and that they wouldn't willingly serve him. And presumably he recognized that he couldn't force them to serve him, either. (Indeed, his "make his own gargoyle" plans, such as the Steel Clan robots, the Mutates, and Thailog, demonstrated that.)

Xanatos was also far too practical to go after the gargoyles out of revenge or a desire to kill them, unlike many of their other adversaries (like Demona, the Pack, or the Hunters). If he was going to be hunting the gargoyles, it would have to be for something that was useful to him. The series did a good job of coming up with his "real goal" (in "The Edge", for example, testing his gargoyle armor). But "The Price" came up with a very good reason to catch a gargoyle; he needed one for the Cauldron of Life, which required a piece of gargoyle stone skin. Also, Xanatos recognized that he'd need a guinea pig for the Cauldron - and why not use the same gargoyle he'd captured?

A very good way of providing Xanatos with a "true-to-character" purpose for catching a gargoyle. (And adding onto it the "make it look as if Hudson's been turned to stone by magic" - working because, both the audience and the gargoyles knew that such magic was possible.)

Good podcast on "The Price," possibly my favorite episode of Gargoyles. The discussion of Elisa firing her gun at the crate of rugs made me think about the fact that NYPD officers have to file a report every time they fire their department-issue guns (which is obviously a very good policy). I wonder how Elisa explained that spent ammo. (Not to mention how she explained her many lost guns throughout the series, something Greg has joked about in the past...I've always meant to try to catalogue how many guns she loses, which would obviously lead to some pretty serious disciplinary charges in reality.)
Craig

Appropriately, the "Voices from the Eyrie" podcast on "The Price" aired today. Great timing for Greg Weisman's birthday.

MATT -
Good point about the gargoyle beast population. It makes the Xanadu clan's mission of tending to them all the more important.
Todd Jensen

First, of course, a happy birthday to Mr. Weisman. May you never have a writer's block that's higher than about four inches or so.

Jurgan, thanks for the tip. Appreciate it.

Happy Birthday Greg Weisman.

'Nuff said.

Happy Birthday, Greg! I can't express how thankful I am for all you've done for us this past year. You and all of your work are greatly appreciated! I hope you have a wonderful birthday!

Todd>
I noted the beasts joining them as well. Given the serious lack of beasts we've seen, I suspect they were dying out in the clan. For there to only be 3 beast eggs among the Avalon Clan says a lot. A generation of only 3 beasts is just not the sign of a healthy or sustainable population. Even if the Wyvern Clan had survived past 994, I think the beast would've died out within a century or so. As it likely did with the London Clan. It better explains why Goliath called Bronx the clan's watchdog in Awakening Pt. 1. Bronx may have been one of a small handful of beasts living in the clan at that time.
Happy birthday, Greg Weisman!
I was looking again at one of my favorite panels in "Dark Ages" #3, when the gargoyles are all gliding about at the end of the Wind Ceremony and - a detail that I really liked - were carrying the gargoyle beasts with them. I noticed that there were four beasts in that scene, the most we've seen together at one time. It shows just how used we are - or that I am, at least - to seeing "fragmentary" clans.
This one seems more apropos, I think...AHEM...

Today is Greg's birthday
So ring the birthday bell

MATTHEW - I'd forgotten that line until now - but trust something involving Shakespeare to get involved with "Gargoyles".
Todd Jensen

Todd> Yes it's from one of the Treehouse of Horror episodes. Memorable because among other things Homer shoots zombie Shakespeare.

Shakespeare: Is this the end for Zombie Shakespeare?

ALEX - Thanks. I thought that might be it, though I wasn't sure. (It's been years since I last watched "The Simpsons".)

(I decided that the topic had moved enough away from "spoiler territory" by now that I could safely leave out the tags.)
It's a Simpsons quote.

Did you wreck the car?
No.
Did you raise the dead?
Yes.
But the car's okay?
Yeah.
MATTHEW -
What's that a reference to? It seems vaguely familiar, but I can't place it.
"Fifth? Is fifth a thing?"

Morrand, it's tradition in this room for the first ten posters of the week to declare their position. By my count, we're up to six.

Following up on my post from yesterday: based on this Facebook post, it appears that Alan Quah’s intended cover for #3 was a rad picture of Hudson: https://m.facebook.com/story.php/?id=666139277&story_fbid=10162959918739278

The Desdemona Quah cover seems to be intended for #4, even thought it was in all the solicitations for #3 and even the Cover Gallery. Has anyone actually seen the Hudson cover variant? I may ask Nate Cosby about this on the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter.

Craig

A creativity demon about upcoming "Dark Ages" issues:
The quartet rouse the dragon by taking a cup from its hoard. Probably not, since that idea's been done before - twice - but I couldn't resist speculating it.
Todd Jensen

I received my physical Dark Ages #3 issues today, which are beautiful as usual. However, one peculiarity: The Alan Quah cover (variant B) was not included along with the other variants I had ordered. Which isn't strange in and of itself; it wouldn't be the first time a lone variant shipped separately for whatever reason. What really makes me curious is that the solicitation for Dark Ages #4 (as seen on the inside back cover as well as various online sources) shows the same Alan Quah cover that appears in the Cover Gallery for #3! So, is this the cover for #3 or #4? Did Quah miss an issue, or was there some mixup? Is there, in fact, no Cover B for #3 (in which case, I need to request a refund)? Curious if anyone else has encountered this, and whether their local comics stores were able to shed any light.
Craig

Fifth? Is fifth a thing?

Feeling pretty good that I've gotten through "Manhattan" #7 and DA #2, with the rest (8-9 and 3) sitting here in sight waiting for me. I'll get caught up to the spoilers yet, I hope. (I *am* enjoying going back through the comment archives meanwhile to find the discussions for those issues.)
