Now, it may well be that the gargoyles on that church do depict the vanquished of the battle of Shrewsbury; but, allowing that is so, let any man explain to me, if he can, how it happened that this face found itself among that party:

Speaking a bit more on "Bushido", it recently struck me [SPOILER] after reading the solicitation for "Demona" #5, that although I'd known ever since I first saw "Bushido" in 1886 that there were gargoyles in Japan, I hadn't - until a few days ago - given thought to them in the context of the phrase "the Rising Sun". It does make it almost appropriate now - even if still a bit questionable - that Taro wanted to reveal the Ishimura clan to the world at dawn. [/SPOILER]

I also (at age 11/12) didn't quite get the exact logistics of how the World Tour worked (returning to Avalon every time) until a few years later when I came across Ask Greg, in 1998 or 1999. I'd agree that it isn't explained well on the show itself, although it also doesn't particularly matter. The larger, more important idea (that they're continually being sent where they need to be) is clearly explained, and the fact that they return to Avalon in between is interesting but not essential to any of the episodes. I did catch Angela's line in "Shadows," but considering that Wyvern was their very first stop and Angela herself had no reason to know the ins and outs of how the skiff worked at that point, I took it more as her own interpretation rather than a clue that they constantly had to go back to Avalon. That line might have worked more effectively if it had been included a few episodes later.

Phoenician> I too recall being a bit unclear about the mechanics back in the 90s, though I also didn't think about it too much. At one point I thought there was something magical about the skiff itself. But yeah, I seem to remember thinking they were going from one stop to the next with no Avalon in between. Now, that makes little sense given what we know, but, like you, it would've been nice to see some of those castings here and there. Even if we just got one of them saying the first line of the spell right before the credits or we see Avalon fade into the mists behind them as they arrive at a new locale in the beginning.

Also, while I do recall reading it in the rambles on this site, I still appreciated the language-barrier discussion. The whole 'Avalon-compensating-magic' is a world-building detail I was fine with back then and still am now, but I've also really grown fond of how different languages were brought to attention in shows like Young Justice, which really did flesh out the scope of universe they were telling stories in.

In thinking about how the show handwaved the various in-universe language barrier scenarios (gotta wonder if Katharine, Tom, and Magus ever cracked middle or modern English, lol), I was reminded of another thought I've long had, which is that I did wish we saw the World Travelers recite the spell to Avalon or disembarking from the magical island sporadically through the tour, instead of only in "Avalon" Part One and "Ill Met By Moonlight". Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware there was precious real estate in terms of the minutes they had for these episodes and animating such sequences was clearly a luxury that could not be afforded. It's ultimately a quibble, and did not hamper my enjoyment of our cast's odyssey when these episodes first aired, but I'll admit when I was younger I did not fully grok the mechanics of the World Tour until my first days exploring Ask Greg. I just figured they went directly from Avalon to Wyvern to Queen Florence Island, etc (clearly, I must have missed Angela's line about returning to Avalon to make another attempt for Manhattan in "Shadows of the Past" during those initial airings/reruns). [SPOILER] The timing feels especially appropriate, after the recent announcement about the content of "Demona" #5. We now even have a time period for Katana at last - hatched in the late thirteenth century, so presumably she meets Brooklyn in the first half of the fourteenth century. I should look up what was going on in Japan during that period, for potential background events. Though it does make my theory of Brooklyn's Timedancing adventures in Japan getting involved with the story of Ushiwaka less plausible.... [/SPOILER]

Voices "Bushido"> [SPOILER] I'm curious that Woodyard stated that they were not allowed to have any sword fights in the episode as it would be imitate-able behavior, however there had already been multiple sword fights in the series at that point (several in City of Stone alone). Was it perhaps because Bushido is modern day and the other sword fights happened in the middle ages? I wonder. Though come to think of it, Macbeth battled Goliath with a sword in "Enter Macbeth" Goliath used a mace, but still. And Hudson has done his share of damage with his sword too. [/SPOILER]

Fantagraphics is certainly appropriate for those Disney comics, since it's currently reprinting Carl Barks' Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck comics, and has already reprinted Don Rosa's own Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck comics (which are worth reading, especially if you're a history buff like me - I recall his "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" being compared here to the "Demona" spin-off) - not to mention the old Mickey Mouse newspaper strips.

For those who hadn't seen the news, Fantagraphics will be publishing a monthly Uncle Scrooge comic beginning in October, with bimonthly Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse titles joining in November. It's been half a decade since the classic Disney titles were published as regular floppies, so this hopefully indicates more renewed interest at Disney in keeping their legacy characters alive in comics.

Like Matthew, I enjoy looking up historical events for each day of the year, and noted that today was the anniversary of the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403, where Henry IV defeated Henry "Hotspur" Percy and his allies. While reading up on the battle, I learned that there's now a church on the battlefield, built by Henry IV, with the mention of a rumor that the church's gargoyles were intended to represent the vanquished Hotspur and associates. Which means that there's a connection between gargoyles and one of the major battles in Shakespeare (if one not directly linked to "Gargoyles", whose borrowings from the "Henry IV" plays have so far focused on the Falstaff-side rather than the historical-side).
