Heh, funny that the old movie should get brought up. Brandon Tenold recently covered it in one of his reviews. And for extra fun the thumbnail art used for the episode had the title of the movie printed in the same font used for animated Gargoyles.

Regarding the 1972 movie:

It's been a good long while since I've seen it (caught it on TV, almost as it was meant to be seen, though it was on "Svengoolie" so not quite) and I remember it being pretty good. I found the complexity of the characters interesting: the bad guys (the gargoyles, here) being evil but with a motive to be evil, and the good guys (the humans) being good but not completely so. For a TV movie, they pulled it off. I agree with ontheup&up that there are some notable similarities between the movie and the universe we're concerned with, enough that I think you would be able to fuse the two fairly easily if so inclined. But I do not remember a lot of the details (and IMDb is not especially helpful), and I think my DVR copy got fragged out a while back so I could be misremembering, so I wouldn't want to assign it a rating.

IMDb does mention that one of the gargoyles was played by an actor named "Rock Walker," which is awesome.

Algea—More like you need to have an empty or low hand by the end of your turn, since most characters Ready at the beginning of your turn. Or simply don’t Challenge, Quest, or Sing with her until your hand is small enough for her to Ready on your next turn.

CHIP> If I'm reading the "Stone by Day" rule correctly, it looks like you'll only be able to play her relatively late in your turn? Presumably to mimic gargs only being active at night.

Goliath & the GTF: I suspect that after Quest, Demona is, at the very least, as much of a public record as any on-going police investigation is, one where not necessarily all information is disclosed to the public, but the occasional press conference may ask for tips and information and whatnot when the case slows to a crawl.

As for Thailog, I guess we'll see. But I do wonder whether he'll take some advantage of the legal rights Goliath recently won for gargoyles. But maybe not; he's done well enough as the recluse executive no one ever sees.

Thanks for the movie review. I've heard much about the movie, but haven't seen it. (Although I did get curious about it after "Gargoyles" gave me a stronger interest in fictional treatments of gargoyles.) I wonder how many others here have.

Came across and watched an old made for TV monster movie from 1972 eponymously titled "Gargoyles" directed by Bill L. Norton earlier tonight on YouTube whilst looking up videos for some more inspiration on making more Gargoyle OCs. It was a decent time and pretty well made for a made for TV movie.

Although a generic and simple story, I am very much astounded by the coincidences between this Gargoyles movie depiction of Gargoyles and the Gargoyles we are very familiar with. In my research on the development of Gargoyles (by Greg), there was no mention of it so I think this was just really coincidental. Pardon the attempt of trying to sound insightful but, so odd to think we can be on the same wavelength with a person we have never met nor had a connection to on an idea even if separated by space and time.

And I was very much prepared to make a quasi-"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" alternate POV starring the Gargoyles botching a retrieval mission to retake a Clan Member's skeleton for a Wind Ceremony leading to the near destruction of the whole Clan. I was also legitimately wondering approaching the end how the Gargoyles would be defeated since there wasn't really any preestablished set up to their mythos on how they can be beaten but given it's made for TV limit, the method was... okay, generic.

I will say though the leading heroine, Diana (played by Jennifer Salt), is really cute, liked her characterization too even though the events leading to her getting her clothes damaged and show off some skin were an expected "yup, right on schedule" with beautiful girl in the lair of the monster. I do objectively like the overall style of all three of her outfits, very cute, yet looks like I was unable to shake my underlying comparison to Elisa and expecting more out of Diana. I still plan to track down and watch the other movies Jennifer Salt is featured in according her filmography section on wikipedia.

Lastly, here's the link to the movie for all of you to see and bring your own conclusions too: https://youtu.be/DpSUT2zmhgo?si=_ETSvbuh50vxM521

I give it a decent 7 out of 10. What do you guys think?

From a storytelling point of view, I'd rather that Goliath doesn't announce Demona's existence (or the existence of the other "weirder" elements of the Gargoyles Universe, such as Oberon's Children) to the world - at least, not for a long time. I prefer the notion of the public being mostly unaware of their presence, beyond the periodic "Something odd happened, but we don't know quite what it is" moments - apart from the fact, of course, that they now know that gargoyles exist and are sentient beings - but just know about Goliath and the rest of the Manhattan clan at this point.

I, too, hope this is substantial enough.

ontheup&up > I'm not sure of what you did, but as far as I have figured out, you have two options for viewing the spoilers. One is to switch to "Reading Mode" in your browser (or whatever it calls it), which will usually show all the text whether it's hidden or not. (It also makes all the text higher-contrast, and a lot more readable in some cases.) The other is to select between the spoiler tags. This latter approach reminds me less of using a blacklight to reveal hidden text and more of the old hint books for Infocom games, which came with a magic highlighter you could rub on the page to reveal the solution to various puzzles in the game. I'm not totally ashamed to admit that's how I finally got through "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," though I am dismayed at what that says about my age.

Regarding Demona's existence becoming public, I can't quite avoid the idea that the GTF would not advertise her existence, for a couple of reasons. Obviously, letting Demona know that she was known could make it more difficult to keep tabs on her--not that she'd be surprised, I'm sure, and evidently the GTF has not had great success in monitoring her from what we've seen so far. Frankly, it seems just as likely that she'd be delighted to be getting so much attention.

But aside from this, advertising Demona's existence runs a pretty substantial risk of flaring up tensions if she, and her exploits, get to be more widely understood as representative of the gargoyles. This is already a very real risk if Goliath insists on keeping everyone out of view, or at least in the shadows. The NYPD surely doesn't need to help define all of them through Demona, though I really suspect Demona would very happily do so, given the chance. It'll be interesting to see if Goliath is able to get control of their image, whether with the help of the GTF or not, and if so, what the effect of that would be.

I just found out how you can see what's hidden by the spoilers. I didn't get spoiled by anything, but it just feels like when you use a blacklight and find the hidden text written in invisible ink if anyone is picking up what I'm putting down?

This is just a small breakthrough for me, I normally check in on here on mobile devices and thought you could just tap on what's hidden to see the spoiler (like on TvTropes) but it's a different method here.

We've now got the name for the first issue of the "Fantastic Four/Gargoyles" crossover, and
it's brought a bit more of Shakespeare into "Gargoyles", if a quote that's already been used in it
.

On a somewhat unrelated note, Critical Role's latest series dropped a new trailer today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri2wNyvSpiY

To try to offer something a bit more substantial....

I don't know how many people here have seen, or remember, the Jeremy Brett adaptations of "Sherlock Holmes", but I recently found myself recalling their dramatization of "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons". Marina Sirtis had a bit-part in it (I can't remember if she even got any lines) as Lucretia Venucci, a member of a Mafia family whose brother Pietro played a substantial role in the case. What struck me, when I remembered that episode, was that Marina played the part of the sister of an organized crime figure - which feels kind of apt in light of the more recent developments in Demona's doings (though Antoinette Dracon has enjoyed a much larger role than Lucretia got).

There's an additional detail in the story that echoes Demona's doings (kind of - and I'll admit that it's a bit of a stretch and most likely entirely coincidental). In the story, someone is going around smashing busts of Napoleon. The police and Dr. Watson think that it's being done by someone with a strong hatred for Napoleon (maybe descended from someone who'd fought against him in the Napoleonic Wars), but Holmes is much more sceptical, pointing out that this person is focusing all their attention on a single group of busts rather than everything to do with Napoleon, and that thus the answer has something to do with this particular set of busts.
It turns out that the bust-smasher had hidden a stolen pearl inside one of the busts, and was now smashing them all in order to locate it - needless to say, the pearl turns out to be inside the sixth and last bust. (Lucretia had apparently taken part in the theft, serving as a maid to the noblewoman who owned the pearl and taking advantage of that to steal the pearl.) The pearl in question had once belonged to the Borgias - and an early version of "Hunter's Moon" had made the tablet with the Fulfillment Spell originally belonging to the Borgias, rather than the Medicis in the televised version. Yes, the human public would certainly be given a lot to digest if Goliath and his clan were to share with them a lot of the details about their adversaries, especially Demona - meaning that they'd have to face magic, faerie-folk (via some of Demona's past schemes and her very survival for the past thousand years), and so on. Discovering that they're already sharing the world with another intelligent species (and one native to Earth, at that - not what they were expecting "first contact" to be like) would shake things up enough, as it is.

MATT - Thanks for the link; the crossover certainly looks entertaining. Given that the "Darkwing Duck" elements were some of the most eagerly discussed elements of the 2017 "DuckTales", I can imagine an excited reception of it here.

Incidentally, tonight's the full moon - but this October full moon will be the Harvest Moon rather than the Hunter's Moon, thanks to it coming in the first week of the month. We'll apparently have to wait until next year for a Hunter's Moon.

Oh, pardon the double post but Bleeding Cool News did an article on the upcoming crossover between Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck.

I guess that makes me Fifth.

Having the Clan work alongside the Gargoyle Task Force sure would make for a lot of interesting story potential. They've been able to work alongside the law to a degree but not exactly within it.
Plus the Clan is holding onto a lot of baggage that they might not be willing to share nor would human authority be ready to process it. Besides the fact that Demona has threatened Manhattan and the world on multiple occasions, there's also the magical threats they've combatted and personal problems as well.

Like, how are Brooklyn and Katana supposed to address a kidnapped egg to the authorities?

Fourth????

(Also, I'm back. Hi.)

Algae - That is a very good question I hadn't considered before; I think it's also worth noting that Demona had already ended up on the NYPD's radar once before: in City of Stone her broadcast was watched by the entire city, and was then followed by the highest number of unexplained disappearances in the history of New York. Sure, back then the police might have dismissed her as a madwoman with a good mask, but nowadays they should have figured out what she was.

Anyway: you're right that, logically, Goliath and/or Elisa must have explained to the rest of the Taskforce why it was important to find Demona - which engenders another question: how much does the Taskforce currently know about, well, everything? Because, if I were Goliath, the first three things I would have said once inside the 23rd Precinct would have been:

1)"The masked woman from that broadcast is an actual Gargoyle named Demona; in fact, she happens to be the most dangerous Gargoyle alive, and she spends most of her time in New York."
2)"Reclusive millionaire Alexander Thailog is actually an evil Gargoyle, so please keep an eye on Nightstone Unlimited."
3)"This is the identikit of a guy named Coldsteel; he's probably not in town right now, but you can be quite certain he'll return sooner or later, so be prepared."

More generally, this underlines that we need to see Goliath interacting with the GTF sooner rather than later - or at least a conversation where Elisa/Matt/Chavez/whoever clarifies his role in it.

Something I noticed while rereading issue 3 of Gargoyles: Quest is Elisa mentioning that Matt and the Gargoyles Taskforce had been looking for Demona since the theft of Puck's flute which makes me wonder...

Is Demona's existence a matter of public record now? Surely Matt would have to file some kinda official report if he's using tax-payer money to hunt a genocidal gargoyle terrorist, or at least give somekinda explanation to the rest of the GTF (including Margot) of who Demona is and why it's so important to track her down.
