I'm a business student at USC and one of my classes is a freshmen honors colloquium, where business leaders and USC alumni come speak to us on a weekly basis. This past Monday, October 6, we had the pleasure of having Dick Cook, the chairman of Walt Disney Pictures, come speak to us. Afterwards, I asked him if he had ever heard of the Gargoyles TV show and subsequent attempts to make it into a movie. He said he was familiar with it, but they just never found a script that they liked. This is pretty much what you've been saying all along, but if the chairman of Disney Pictures has heard of the Gargoyles movie, don't you feel that Gargoyles has had SOME relevance, and thus, there's still a chance it might succeed as a movie? I'm still holding out hope that Gargoyles will make it to the silver-screen! =) By the way, who IS responsible for writing and submitting the movie's scripts now?

Alright Greg Seems noone is talking about this anymore btu I'm going to ask anyway. So this live action movie that all us fans have been waiting for, Like where is it. I mean the first episode aired in 94 it's almost been 10 years now. I still care but does Disney, Does Buena Vista, Does Touchstone? and whats more Greg do you still care? I mean if it's just not going to happen the rumor may just need to end because after 10 years of waiting maybe people are loosing hope that it will ever happen. I want it to but somebody needs to get the movie out or noone will care anymore. Hell maybe it could be one of those things like Last unicorn wait 20 years then make a movie and everyone will love it but it will have to be pretty close to the series.

I have many questions to ask, but the most important is about the Movie Status:
- Have you noticed that in this period movies about superheroes, comics/cartoons-heroes and, most of all, Fantasy adventures (some citation: X-men,Spiderman,DareDevil,Hulk,The Lord of The Rings,Harry Potter ecc..) are VERY poular? This could be the right moment to find, at last, a good productor,I think, moreover now that 3D technology is so advanced you cold do great things whit this movie..

If productors think the series is not popular enough, why don't you relance it in television, or at last, have you ever think to make it all in comics? (I mean all the episodes)

Hi Greg. I started watching Gargoyles on Toon Disney over my younger sisters shoulder a few weeks ago and haven't stopped since. Alas I've discovered that Toon Disney are only showing about half the total number of episodes, so there are probably gaping holes in my understanding of the overall theme (I get the impression there is one - correct me if I'm wrong;-).

First off, very well done. I'm very impressed. Not only are they extremely well written and animated, but there is subtlety of dialogue and expression! In a Disney Cartoon? Indeed.

Secondly: just finished City of Stone. Missed part of it the first time round. There's only one thing I can say... "Oi! The tragedy!" If Demona is not one of the most cathartic characters created in the last century I don't know who is! Despite her brutal treatment of Goliath it's hard not to empathise with her, or to enjoy her episodes perhaps more than the rest (is this unhealthy?;-). Macbeth is the perfect counterpoint, another very good character and equally engaging in his own way. However, I am frustrated. I glanced down an episode list and couldn't find anything further devoted to them. How does their story conclude? I must know!

Thirdly: somewhere I posted an e-mail to a Gargoyles site and the owner told me a film had been on the cards for the last five years, but with no apparent progress. Is anything known that you could tell? I did wonder if, when the reply mentioned it might be live action, whether this might change as a result of the successes of CGI films in recent years. I wonder which would best suit the genre - CGI or live action? With CGI the original voice cast could be used, of course.

Sorry for the long message, and thanks for indulging a new initiate.

Hi all. Hello Greg.

Nice to see you doing all these rambles, they make some forgotten memories come up to my mind again. I would do some, too, if I got a chance to watch the episodes again. But neither are their re-runs here (I've asked my way through: they want to spend the money on new things, though I always see "Doug", "Darkwing Duck" and so on), nor is my internet connection fast enough to download the episodes (if there are any to download) and a faster connection is by now too expensive. But after all the years without Gargoyles I do still remember some things that I liked or liked not that much.
First the things that I did not like: though there was a continuing plot, sometimes it was all too much the same. In short and very sarcastic: "It was a nice evening. The birds were singing and everyone liked each other. Then suddenly a dark cloud brought evil to our main characters. But after a short and hard fight the evil was defeated and everything got back to normal." That's why I like the "Awakening", "Avalon" or "City of stone" parts. These eps were so interesting because there was enough time to create a very interesting story and a really cool atmosphere - BTW City of stone was my first touch with Gargoyles. I saw the scene where the weird sisters speak as statues of children with Goliath and later crush as Brooklyn touches one of them (I hope I'm not mixing something up). My brother thought it was stupid and switched it off and I pretended that I thought it was stupid, too (Hey, I was just a child which did not want to argue). But I guess I liked the characters and the whole atmosphere. - Of course I don't want to say that the whole series should be one continuing show, but I had liked to see more five-parters.
But of course there are things that I liked very much. Most characters do change during the show and keeps being surprising. Everyone is part of a complex story (sometimes it was too complex for me, but after seeing it the second time I knew what was going on. But unfortunately some eps were mixed up so that suddenly we saw Angela, though the world tour was not even started). One of the things I like most are the fantasy elements (BTW Was the dragon we saw in "Pendragon"(?) a real dragon or just brought to life by magic??) Time travel, magicians, fae and of course the Gargoyles (clear why Fang said "I love this body"!!)
I just hope the new episodes will go on air someday. Maybe until then I can watch a few re-runs.

p.s.: some things might sound meaner than they are meant. I'm not good in being polite when I am writing in a language that I don't use often enough.
And sorry about any mistakes:)

I've been absent for a while (did anyone miss me??), but now there are a few things I want to say.
First of all I never said thank you for such a great animated series - still the best I've ever seen. It can be seen that you wanted to make it very good and not just tried to create something for a quick success. Nearly no one-dimensional characters, complex stories that can't be every time easily understood, a continuing plot and not every episode the same story with the some characters and the same end, all this makes Gargoyles to one of the best series ever. What I liked very much either are the (not too) dark atmosphere, some fantasy elements and the elements of old mythologies.
Unfortunately I haven't seen any episode for a few years (any German out there who knows when the last one was aired?). Because of this I appreciate your work with answering all of our questions. I don't know if I had the motivation for this.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that some day new episodes will be aired. But what about the real life movie? Do you know anything new?

When this show first aired years ago, I was only about ten or eleven years old. Being without cable, the only Gargoyle episodes I ever watched were the "Goliath Chronicles" on ABC. I am now 16 years old and I have since began watching the re-runs of the ORIGINAL series on Toon Disney. The stories have intrigued me and I am eager to watch the next episode one after the other. Before I get to my question, I want to say that characters like Macbeth, the Weird Sisters, Xantos and Demona make for an ever-changing and developing story line that keeps me coming back for more. Now my question is this, if you did make a movie (which I believe is still possible even today), would the story line be closely based on what we saw in the original series. Would it take snippits from the original series to explain the main plot, but be a completely new adventure? Would you base the plot of the movie around items such as the Phoneix Gate and the Eye of Odin?

Anyway,ok i hav eto ramble about something and i hope it won't affend you or anyone who reads this.
The rumor of a live action movie has been around. (don't get annoyed i haven't said anything yet) I think that great,great that the story is being (excuse the word) resurected.(not that is was ever gone in the eyes of the fans)But does it have to be a live action movie. I just think that kind of ruins the story we (as the fans) have come to love.unless you were going to have the same cast for the parts as you did the voices. Sound is a big memory trigger and for all the people who watched it before want it to be like they knew it. I personally hate it when a story continues however it does and the voices or character change. I don't know maybe it is just me. I just think that there would be nothing wrong with an animated one, I mean the show was animated to begin with. I also really feel strongly on the voice thing. Voices should stay the same.I think that a live action might reck the story. Like (and forgive me for using this example some people can't stand it)the Harry Potter thing, brilliant books that the world fell in love with ,but the movie is going tobe live and i think that recks it. We no longer can imagine what the character are like because we will be told. I don't know, am i making any sense? Please tell me what you think, what are your views on this, what do you hope for the movie, what do you hope doesn't happen, what do you want. And please tell me if what i'm saying makes sense, please rip it apart and criteac it.

There was a discussion in the comment room last week on the original plans that you and Michael Reaves drew up for the Gargoyles live-action movie (which were rejected), and one element of it got a particularly interesting bit of attention that I thought that I'd ask you about. You mentioned that in the movie plans, Macbeth would be the lord of Castle Wyvern back in the medieval period, before Goliath and the other gargs were placed in their stone sleep.

The question that got raised was whether it would have been that advisable to introduce Macbeth into the movie in such a role. Unlike the bulk of the other major characters in the series (certainly the ones whom you mentioned in your plans for the story), Macbeth exists outside of "Gargoyles" as a very well-known Shakespearean figure. This raised, therefore, the question as to whether his appearance in the movie in the role that you and Reaves had planned for him might have been a bit distracting, on account of his literary connotations. Of course, we don't know as yet if you and Reaves ever managed to get to that part before your idea for the movie was rejected, but I thought that I'd ask you about it anyway.

1.Should they make a Gargoyle movie, what do you think of sequels? In the past, Hollywood had very little success with sequels, particurly action/sci-fi/fantasy movies. Also, actors tend not to stay for next movies.

Gargoyles: 'AnimatorGuy' over at The Flik Spot landed this interesting bit about a project which was once ditched and now may be coming back to life:

"In 1996 there was talk of a live action version of Disney's "Gargoyles", Dean Devlin and Roland Emerich were apparently interested in helming the project, but things fell through and they decided to do "Godzilla" instead, wow, great choice! Well I can tell you that 4 years later, things are starting to heat up again concerning "Gargoyles", apparently there is actually a completed script ready and waiting! So the project is far from dead, and things may start happening sooner than we think. He tells me that everything was haulted back in '96 because the cost of creating the CG Gargoyles would have made the budget huge, but now bringing the gargoyles to life won't be so budget draining as it would of back then, so it looks like the project is far from dead!"

I read your ramble on your and Michael Reaves' original plan for the live-action movie, and liked it. The bit that intrigued me about it was that in your plans for it, Lex's name was to be short for "Alexander" rather than "Lexington", in light of Lex's friendship with Alexander Xanatos in the series. I don't know if that was even on the planning board for the series when you and Reaves were working on that story for the movie, but it was fun to see it there anyway.

You mentioned your choice, if it were up to you, [hopefully it will be,] to direct a Gargoyles Live Action movie, namely Jonathan Frakes. It had never occurred to me and for the life of me I don't know why. Generations is not among my favorite Trek movies, but I thought it was script problems, (the need to shift the franchise to the NG storyline,) and not craft that was at the root of the problem- It was well made, as was the next movie (which is among my favs) that I believe he also directed. He would be perfect: If the company wont give you complete control he is someone you can trust not to betray the story. He has brought up the show in completely unrelated interviews calling for its return. He specifically mentioned how fun it was to work with his Star Trek friends on the show so they would be more likely to make time for it in their schedules. And as you stated, he gives a damn about the material.

That led me to two thoughts. Should we as fans try to draw Mr. Frakes into Gargoyles fandom? I assume we could never afford his con fee, and it would be unreasonable to ask him to forgo it, but it would be nice to show him fan appreciation. Also, should we organize in approaching Disney pushing for Frakes to direct? They might think of us as a more directed and serious group (read- more people willing to spend money) if we have clear and sound objectives. Not to mention it might subconsciously connect to Trek fandom, and therefore seem more profitable. Any thoughts or suggestions?

On a completely unrelated point that will be out of date by the time you read this- Keith David is doing Shakesleare in the [Central] Park through July 16: Midwinter's Tale.

Considering the level of technology avalible to movie makers these days, and going on the assumption that you'd be given carte-blanche with a movie budget, if you were allowed to make a live-action movie about Gargoyles, would you consider the option of having the clan rendered as CGI creations (ie. - on the same level as Draco from Dragonheart)?

Dear Greg, First off I wanted to tell you that Gargoyles is my all time favorite cartoon. I loved the twisting storylines that always kept me guessing what would happen next. Another reason I love the show so much is all the voice talent from actors/actresses that starred in Star Trek shows. I watch the show all the time on toon disney and I know the show was cancelled a while back. This brings me to my question. I was visiting a website called the internet movie database (www.imdb.com) and under Gargoyles it has listed several episodes or movies that were made in 1998 and 1999. I was wondering if you were involved with these and if you know where I could find them? Also I was recently in a blockbuster video and on their preview show they have running in the store there was a segment on gargoyles and it said there are 2 new movies coming out, again are you involved with these and do you know what it is about? Thank you for your time and effort and most of all thank you for creating the gargoyles.
