I noticed someone else asked a question about doing YJ stories that require a more mature rating. In this case, the poster wanted more brutal fight scenes. I don't have much sympathy with his desire for more violence, but it did make me wonder about something else: are there specific instances in which you would have liked to have told on YJ but couldn't because of the limitations of the target audience?
For example, I thought it was rather clever what you did in "Disordered." Personally, as a 49 year old, I wouldn't have minded an entire episode of them talking to Black Canary in therapy, but the reality is that your target audience wouldn't have much patience for that, and you probably couldn't have sold the idea to Cartoon Network either. You came up with an intelligent compromise of having the team's therapy sessions inter-cut with Superboy's adventures with the Forever People.
1) Are there other instances in which you had to come up with creative solutions to making an otherwise unpalatable story palatable to your intended audience? Can you think of some examples and what the work-arounds might have been?
2) And, are there still other stories that you wanted to tell but couldn't at all because of the network or because they wouldn't have interested your audience? For example, you probably couldn't produce an episode that was entirely a slice-of-life episode without an action element because that's your audience tunes in for. Have you ever wanted to do an episode like that on YJ?
3) Will the third season have the same content restrictions placed upon it as previous seasons? Or, will you have more liberty with your creative choices?

I wouldn't say the "limitations of the target audience" but I would say the limitations of those who are nervous in seats of power.
But your example doesn't hold water for me. "Disordered" was told the way Brandon and I wanted to tell it. There was no compromise for our audience.
1. Your question is based on a faulty premise. I'm not really sure how to address it.
I suppose we hinted at Red Arrow's heroin addiction, as opposed to depicting it. Added in a metaphorical layer about his addiction to searching for the Original Roy, without negating the possibility that over that time he had also slipped into substance abuse.
On another completely different topic, we were aware that we could not depict LGBTQ relationships either. But that doesn't mean we don't have LGBTQ characters. You strive to write with consistency even toward those elements that you're not allowed to discuss.
2. 100% slice of life? No. I like the mix and the counterpoint.
3. I'm not commenting on the third season at all.

1). How did Cheshire recognise Artemins as her sister in Infiltrator? I realise that must sound like a very redundant question, but technically Artemis was wearing a mask when they met, and you've said before in previous posts that this a universe where a pair of glasses or goggles is enough to hide ones identity, regardless of practicality. So how did Cheshire figure out that it was her sister underneath the mask?
2). Here's another thing, Artemis puts on the Glamour Charm so that no one would recognise her as Tigress, but with regards to the whole mask thing, wouldn't she still be unrecognisable to everyone, even her own team, by simply wearing her Tigress mask? In Summit, when Ra's reveals her, she wasn't wearing her mask. But say that she was to wear the mask and someone removes the charm, they still wouldn't be able to tell who she was. Not nesscessarily a question, just an observation
3). When Artemis went undercover as Tigress, did she take on a fake civilian name as well? If so, what was it? Or did everyone just know her simply by Tigress? Did they cook up a false background for her as well? Seems unlikely that Manta would allow Kaldur to appoint some unknown villain as his right hand without some assurances.
4). Since Black Canary was providing therapy for the Team and the abductees, does mean she actually has some kind of degree in counselling or psychology by the start of Season 1?
5). Do the memorials of fallen heroes include their real names, or does it just list them as their hero name? For example, does the one for Jason simply call him Robin or Jason Todd or both? Technically if Tim were to die and he's gets a memorial, they would have two Robins memorials. Do the memorials also include their date of birth and deaths as well?

1. Fighting style, if you like, added to build, voice, etc.
2. I see your point. But Tigress was LIVING on Manta's ship. Plenty of people saw her without her mask. And even with Ra's, when her hair changed color, I think it would have raised suspicions that would have led to an unmasking.
3. She had all she needed.

5. You saw what you saw. There's no text at all. And the two Robins (or three, if you include Dick) don't look that much alike side-by-side, especially since this is a private memorial for the benefit of people who knew the dead well.

1 When her family find out she and Wally are/were dating? I mean a few days or weeks after new years kiss? How they react?

1. By "her family," do you mean Paula? If so, not long after. And I imagine she reacted positively. Wally and Paula got along well, generally.

So thrilled Young Justice is finally being revived. Hopefully, this season will be a bigger success than Season One and Two combined and be renewed for a fourth season.
1. When Young Justice was still airing on Cartoon Network, you said that you got along with the people there. But why on earth did they give the show random hiatuses in both seasons with no explanation given? Were they purposely trying to kill the show? Did Warner Bros. play a role in this?
2. Khary Payton stated in an interview that the box-office bombing of the Green Lantern movie eventually led to the cancellation of Young Justice. Can you confirm this?
3. Is there going to be a trailer for Season 3 this year?

1. I honestly don't know. Those were all decisions made far above my pay grade.
2. Well. No. I can't. I think it caused some problems. Green Lantern toys languished on the shelf. That effected Mattel's decisions about toys for their entire DC license. And that hurt us, certainly. But I don't want to simplify to the extent you're implying.

In YJ, Lex referred to Mercy as his attourney, while in previous adaptations she has always been portrayed as his driver/bodyguard (and she seems to be those here as well.)
So what all does Mercy do for Lex aside from those?

This was actually a good question. Jaime's armor was pretty much identical to Beetles Black and Green. All three covered their entire bodies and adapted to their bone structure and facial features. Since Black Beetle's real likeness is very humanoid looking, his and Blue's armors look almost identical.
Do the scarabs produce different armor designs from host to host. If so, then why do Blue, Black and Green have pretty much identical armors? If not, why is Dan Garrett's so different from all three? It doesn't even cover is face.

Keep in mind that by the time Dan got the scarab, it had been cleansed and buried for thousands of years. He probably had scarab adapt the armor to his needs and desires.

And I don't believe that Season Two was less character oriented. I just think Season Two was more plot-DRIVEN.

Are all of the premises for individual scripts generated by you and Brandon? Or, does your team of writers pitch some story ideas to you? Can you give a specific examples in regards to Young Justice how this collaboration works?

On seasons one and two, all the springboards were generated by Brandon, myself and Kevin Hopps, working together to break the stories. That is, we didn't go off separately and come up with premises and then pitch them to each other. We sat in a room and worked it all out together. I then wrote all the premises, and those were handed to the writers, who wrote the outlines and the scripts.
Season three has been similar, except it's just been Brandon and myself generating the springboards and breaking the stories. I then go off and write all the beat outlines. And those are handed off to the writers to go straight to script.

During season one, everyone kept trying to tell them they were father and son, which clearly made Superman uncomfortable. By season two, they'd settled in comfortably as brothers. That worked much better for both of them.

I am aware that the scene was played mostly for comedy, but, I figure maybe there's a good explanation!
In one of the Season 2 episodes of Young Justice, Captain Cold tried to rob an armored bank vehicle. He froze up the whole place, and then proceeded to bust out the world's smallest ice pick. Whereupon the heroines holding a bridal shower attacked the poor doomed man.
So my question is, did he think this through? It would surely take him quite a long time to chip through the ice to get at a the good stuff. Did he truly believe there would be no response from police or superheroes in the interim?
I suppose "he's not the brightest bulb in the room" might be a possible response, but I'd like to think that someone who can create cryogenic ray guns definitely has a lot of smarts...

I know that a 20 year old dating a 23 year old isn't that much, but for two teenagers a 3 year gap is really significant and such.(especially if it's,say 14-17) I'm sorry if this comes across as rude in any way

I do think folks don't take age gaps - at these ages - into account in their ships sometimes. I'm not going to comment on this particular fan ship. But I do think it's a legitimate concern that we pay attention to over here on the show.

Hey Greg, I thought I'd bring up a paradox I thought of regarding YJ, not to criticize the show (I loved the show) but just for fun:
Okay so let's suppose for the sake of discussion that Impulse went back into the past solely to prevent Blue Beetle from going rogue (whether or not this was his only reason remains to be seen). So the reach fails their plan and everything is good. But, we know impulse went back into the past from a dystopic future to prevent said future from ever happening. Now let's say Impulse is able to stop the future from happening. Regardless of whether he can go back to the future or not, the timeline is altered so that the future was never dystopic to begin with, not giving Impulse any reason to go into the past in the first place. What happens to the Impulse already in the past, does he "cease?" The rabbit hole goes deeper. With the future altered, Impulse doesn't go into the past to begin with. So there's no Impulse in the past to fix the dystopic future. So the future becomes dystopic again. So the universe is indetermined. It's in a superposition of states: Dystopic future or happy future. Impulse having to go into the past or not. This is simply a rewording of the grandfather paradox by the way. Let's suppose time travel is possible in the first place (it's not, it's forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics), the ramifications on the universe could be immense, or there could be none at all depending on how the The Young Justice universe works. Just wanted your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Yeah, I've explored all this in detail. The workings of Time Travel in the DC Universe don't suit my preferences. I prefer the way we did time travel in the Gargoyles Universe. But the way I see it for YJ, is that in essence, Bart came back, and his coming back, split off Earth-16 as a parallel universe. So Bart came back from - in essence - another time line.

Mostly, I'm inclined to refer you to the show. What missions did you see Alpha get across multiple episodes? What missions did you see Beta get? Or Gamma? Etc.
My guess is you saw no real difference.
But La'gaan clearly felt that Alpha was always getting the priority missions, and that the further down the Greek Alphabet you traveled the further away from what was important you were getting. Whether that was real, subtly real, or all in his head, I'll leave up to you.

I assume you're referring to Young Justice.
I'm not sure I agree with your assessment, as I think many of our relationships (Tula/Garth, Tim/Cassie, Ollie/Dinah, Dick/Barbara, etc) come right from the comics. But in any case, our approach was holistic. We let the characters dictate whom they would love.

1. I don't remember. And I'm not sure your assessment is accurate. Even if you are right, since Manta was one of the seven members, if there were five screens, then only one member was missing.

Hi Greg Weisman there was always something that kinda bugged me when I rewatched the show. In season one Robin didn't use stealth tech which made sense because he was trained in stealth. You also mentioned Jason probably didn't in one post and i don't remember what you said about Batgirl but my question is simply this.
A. In True Colors is their a in universe reason for Robin to use stealth tech if he is already trained in stealth. Thanks man for your future reply and congrats on Season Three. :)

Hi Greg, in season two of Young Justice we got to see the return of Red Volcano (which was awesome, he's one of my fave villains on the show), & I know Lex was involved in his return, but how so? As much as I'd like to think the original Red Volcano had returned somehow, I assume the one we saw in season two was a copy since the first was melted in season one. How did Lex duplicate/revive Red Volcano? I don't doubt Lex is smart enough to build something like Volcano but given how identical this new Volcano was to Morrow's creation I have to wonder if Lex somehow got his hands on Morrow's blueprints/data for Volcano or if he convinced Morrow (who was bedridden last we saw him), or his assistant Brom to recreate the android for him. 1. I don't know that I changed my position as opposed to nuanced it slightly. And even that I did years ago. I'm still not a big fan of the concept. But instead of saying/claiming it doesn't exist, I took a couple steps back and said that no one on Earth-16 has heard of the Speed-Force. Whether or not it "exists" becomes a SPOILER REQUEST.
2. Cuz it's the same person, the same character, i.e. Dick Grayson. Was that not clear? That's like asking why did I chose Nolan North to play Superboy in Season One AND in Season Two. Why in the world would I change actors?

Would it be fair to describe Wally's relationship with Artemis on Young Justice as being an unhealthy one for him? Because as much as I loved Artemis as a character, I failed to see what Wally got out of their relationship that could have been considered beneficial for him over the course of the series. It appeared the entire basis of their relationship as it was portrayed on the show was Wally doing all the work and making all the concessions because only Artemis' wants and needs really mattered within it.
Wally was shown to take the initiative to tell her she was beautiful, tell her she was brilliant, tell her she had nothing to prove, take her hand in support, stand up for her, and show complete trust & faith in her at various points in the episodes "Bereft" & "Insecurity" during the first season to combat her insecurities and their rough beginnings while Artemis was only really shown to think he was a joke and treated him as such unless he was propping her up. Even when the show was having Kent Nelson nudge Wally in her direction in "Denial" she was only shown to think and expect the worst of him in the episode.
So where Wally was shown to like and accept Artemis for who she was by the end of the season, I thought Artemis was just going to reinforce whatever doubts and insecurities he had about himself based on her never being shown to like anything about him on a personal level and their interactions. I just didn't see how her constantly belittling, criticizing, and expecting the worst of him like she was shown to do was a solid foundation for a healthy relationship given his own apparent insecurities. The only thing Artemis was shown to accept was that he thought she was great.
The second season appeared to follow a similar strategy. Wally was once again doing the heavy lifting and making sacrifices for Artemis because she was important to him while she was off "having fun" doing the hero thing like she wanted to do. It wasn't until she began feeling sorry for herself after things had taken a turn for the worse on the mission that she started to doubt her choice if what she said was to be believed. It would have been one thing if she was shown to care about what she was putting Wally through or about what he wanted, but it appeared she only cared about what was best for her in the grand scheme of things.
That was why I thought Wally came across as being more of a tool Artemis could use or toss away depending on what was convenient for her at the time than he did as her partner since there never appeared to be anything equal about their relationship on the show. Wally ended up being an ineffective plot device since Artemis was never really shown to have any real attachment to him or their relationship beyond what he/it could do for her. I know you have said Artemis supposedly loved him, but her actions and the choices she was shown to make over the course of the series made it feel like the show forced her into a relationship her character wanted absolutely nothing to be with. Well, I mean I obviously disagree strenuously with nearly everything you've written above. I'm not even sure how to respond to this.
But here are a few examples to refute your arguments:
*Artemis clearly knew she liked Wally long before he realized he liked her.
*She shows her love and care for him the night he comes back from trying to talk to the clone Roy Harper.
*She feels horribly guilty for leaving Wally and risking what they had.
She's not perfect. Neither is he. But they seemed like a great couple to me. And I certainly don't see him as a "plot device" for her. He's a character in his own right. So is she. At least that's my opinion. And it seems to be the opinion of the majority of the fans, who worship at the Spitfire altar. And while that proves nothing, it does suggest that we were more successful demonstrating my take on things than you indicate.
But your mileage may vary. I can't make you change your mind if you're not feeling it. But you're hardly going to make me change my mind either.
It might have helped if we hadn't cut the dialogue in "Endgame" where he says he wants to come out of retirement and go back to the hero life. Have it all with her. We cut it because we thought it telegraphed his death too much. But maybe that was a mistake. It might have changed things a touch for you. Or not. Probably not. But <shrug>, that's all I can think of that we might have done differently. I'm pretty happy with what got on screen.

1.Why did Ted Kord keep the Scarab a secret from the League? If he suspected it was of alien origin, wouldn't that have warranted an inspection from the League, who may have been able to confirm this? Or maybe even place it under better guard like they did with Amazo's parts? Of course in that instance, they already knew Amazo was dangerous, but still seems like Ted would have avoided a lot of trouble for himself if he was more forthcoming with the League about the Scarab, so why did he keep it to himself?
2.How did the Light know that Ted was the one in possession of the Scarab? Did they make the connection to his hero name or his relation Dan Garret? Or did they use the same tracking technology that Kaldur was using in Darkest?
3.That's another thing. If the Light had a device to track Blue Beatle, which can I safely assume they got from the Reach, why didn't they go looking for the Scarab after the destruction of Ted's lab? Jamie spent a couple of months acting as a solo hero before he joined the team, so why didn't the Reach prioritise his capture to the Light until later? Did they not know immediately that he was off mode?
4.It's weird but ever since Happy New Year, whenever I saw Jamie talking to himself, I pretty much knew he was just talking to his armour, while the other characters are left thinking that's he's an "odd little fish". I know it was funny, but why did he never just say that the Scarab was talking to him? The only person we see him tell on screen was Superboy. I assume he may have told others at some point, but it didn't seem like it was too much effort on Jamie's part to simply explain how his Scarab worked to Superboy. Pass it around the camp, it wouldn't be long before they got the idea. So why did he didn't say to the others that he was talking to his Scarab whenever they gave him strange looks?
5.Why was Dan Garret's beetle armour different from Jamie's?

If you're talking about Season Three, then, no. I'm a few months behind, but YJ S3 can't possibly be done in less than ten months from now.
1. He didn't. He kept it between himself and Dan Garrett. It hardly seemed urgent since it had been on Earth for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
2. No Spoilers.
3. There's a long term plan here, vis-a-vis the Reach. Pretending ignorance is part of it.
4. He did eventually. You saw that. Keep in mind, he had only JUST joined the Team.
5. Why should it have been the same?

First off I would like to say how much I enjoy the tv show Young Justice. I love DC Universe in general and the tv show Young Justice is one of my favorites out of all of them. I was very excited to hear the announcement for the third season. I can't wait to see what your team will come up with! Don't worry I wont ask for spoilers. I read the other comments. I know how you feel about them. But I do have a question. The show doesn't give much on the life of Batman and Robin but there are hints that Bruce is more of a father to Dick at least in his own way. This isn't the case in a lot of other tv shows. In most versions Robin ends up growing apart from Batman. Granted, we don't know what happened in the 5 year skip and I wont ask. But Batman does treat Nightwing as more of a partner. Is there a specific reason for this? Or and I'm going to go on a limb here and may or may not answer my own question, is it because you wanted to focus on the team?

Well, of course we want to focus on the Team. But we also interpreted the Batman/Robin/Nightwing relationship as a solid one. In my opinion, Dick doesn't have to be estranged from Batman to grow up.

Why didn't Artemis break things off with Wally after she accepted the undercover mission in season two? Between her saying she couldn't have said yes fast enough when it came to accepting the mission and her knowing that Wally had wanted to leave the hero life behind, her ending things with him would have seemed to be the decent thing to do if she really cared about and wanted what was best for him. He appeared to be under the impression she was coming back to their life as it was when it was over while everything from her perspective said that was questionable at best.
The idea that Wally spent the last few months of his life being absolutely miserable, having to lie to his family & friends, and face his guilt about letting Paula think her daughter was dead as he looked after her for Artemis while she couldn't even be honest with him about what she wanted really gave me a negative view of their relationship. I didn't have any problem with her choosing to accept the mission or her wanting to return to the team, but I do think Wally absolutely deserved to know she was having doubts about the retirement and their life together. It seemed to be a case of her telling him it was something she needed to do when it was really something she wanted to do.
Was this simply a case of poor execution (at least in my opinion) on part of the show? Or, was Artemis intentionally stringing him along as a safety net while she waited to see how everything played out with the mission and the team once their manipulation became known like it seemed she did? I ended up thinking the Reach ultimately did Artemis a favor since his death allowed her to avoid having to do the work of ending things with him. That it would have been only a matter of time before the renewed specialness of their relationship and life together would have worn off for her again once things settled down if he had survived.

In Agendas when Lex uses Red Sun on Superboy he freezes on spot, but in Usual Suspects when Superboy pretends to be under its influence he doesn't freeze immediately. He reacts to the trigger and then loosens up and immobilizes. Shouldn't Lex see he was only pretending?

I have a question about superboy, and I'm sorry if my english is messed up, english is not my native language. I watched and readed all young justice data, and after that I couldn't help but think that superboy is too weak if we compare with the others. I mean, not in terms of power and all, but all the ex-sidekicks had their evolution in some aspects, but superboy was not that good in aspect of evolution, after all, his condition kind of prevents him to get stronger, and I think anyone who watched yj may think that way. On top of that, even wonder girl seems to be as strong as him (or almost), and has her bracelets, lasso and flight. My question is not if he will get stronger (or not) because it would be a spoiler question, but I want to know your opinion about the last superboy that was shown. Do you agree that Superboy was shown a little weak? If not, why do you think that way? i'm not asking you as a creator, but as a viewer, so please, give your opinion about it.

If by "evolution" you're ONLY talking about his super-powers, than I'll just say he is what he is. He's stronger and more invulnerable than Wonder Girl. But she does have other abilities. He's had extensive martial arts training and can still leap tall buildings in a single bound (more or less). But we're not looking to power him up or over-power him.
As to him being weak: no. I don't think he's weak at all. I don't know why you'd think that.
And, of course, I do think he's evolved a TON as a character. Probably more than anyone else.

Hi Greg, Congratulations on the Young Justice Season Three renewal!!!!! YJ got me through the worst years of my undergrad and reading the happy news made my week. I apologize if you have answered this question before; I haven't rewatched YJ in a few years and I tried combing through the archives to see if you previously answered a similar question.
My question is: do the other members of the team and the Justice League know that M'gann has become so brutal in using her powers and gaining information? Is it a case that because there has been so much going on with the Rimbor trial, the Light's machinations and the invasion that the team and JL haven't noticed? Or is it that M'gann's "ends justifies the means" mentality is the white elephant in the room that the teams (or at the very least certain members) are ignoring because M'gann is getting results? From what I can tell Conner is the only one who really understands much and often M'gann has been crossing the line, but I don't buy that people like Dick, Bruce, Red Tornado, Black Canary wouldn't have noticed or have suspicions. I can understand Dick or Bruce having suspicions and deciding to put them on the back burner in a time of crisis to deal with later, but not so much with team members like Wally, Artemis, Zatanna etc.
I can't wait to watch Season 3!!!!

All this is moot, at this point, since she stopped doing that midway through Season Two. But Conner was the only one who objectively knew what was going on. I think J'onn may have suspected. But I doubt Dick or even Bruce suspected. And how in the world Wally, Artemis, Zatanna, Black Canary or Red Tornado would have had a clue is beyond me.
All that changed of course after what she did to Kaldur.

1. I'll reiterate what I've already revealed. Troia was off limits only at the very beginning of Season One. So we never considered using her in that season. Partway through the season, we were told she was now available, but by that time all our plans for Season One had solidified and it was too late to include her. We had planned on including her in Season Two, at both Raquel's wedding shower and in the final mission against the Reach MFDs. But production concerns - not enough hours in the day - made that impossible. I won't address whether we plan to use her in Season Three, but I will say that as far as I know, there are no off limits characters. At any rate, no one we've asked to use has been vetoed.
2. Have we EVER called them the Marvel Family?

First, I'm very excited that Young Justice is getting a third season!
Second, I've been wondering about this for a while, but the third season prompted me to ask. As Tigress, Artemis uses different weapons (like a sword) and more close quarters combat than she did before-she's more like Cheshire in that sense. Was Artemis trained the same way as Cheshire, or did they have different specialties from the beginning
And this might be a spoiler, but is it safe to say that Artemis is on Cheshire's level now? She wasn't in Season 1, but with age and more experience, are they pretty comparable?

1. So are we.
2. Artemis and Jade were both trained similarly by their father, at least initially, but they had different specialties. Artemis (relative) lack of physical strength as a pre-teen and teenager, made archery a good choice for her.
3. We'll have to see if they ever have reason to test your theory...
