Hi Greg! I looked through the archives and found that you previously mentioned that the first couple seasons of Gargoyles cost $400k-500k per episode to produce.
Assuming the cost of haven't changed dramatically, it seems as though animation is cheaper than the standard scripted network show. Given that, I'm surprised there aren't more animated shows on the major networks, especially with anime so popular in the US now, particularly among older audiences.
I think the only weakness to Young Justice is that it feels like the stories are big enough to fit in a whole hour, but are being condensed to thirty minutes. Again, assuming the cost of animation is in the ballpark of what it was for Gargoyles, an hour-long show doesn't strike me as financially prohibitive.
1. Can you say how much Young Justice costs to produce? A ballpark would be fine if you can't/don't want to give exact numbers.
2. What are your thoughts on the lack of non-Fox/non-comedy prime-time animation? Do you think this is something that can change in the future?
3. Do you think we might one day see hour-long dramatic animation? Did you ever consider making YJ an hour long?

Your assumptions are faulty. Animation and anime have not - in this country - hit the kind of critical mass among adults that you seem to think they have. A few comedies, like Simpsons and Family Guy have worked in primetime, but others have failed. Even the great BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES - which was a huge success in the afternoons - didn't fare well in primetime.
In addition, costs HAVE changed dramatically. Budgets have not, but that means we have to learn to do more with less, generally.
More important is the issue of shelf space. An hour - per conventional wisdom - is a LONG time for kids to sit and watch an animated show. We're told, with some evidence to back it up, that they get bored. And kids still define the economics of most animated product. So if you are going to use up the VERY limited shelf space that any network has with an hour show, it darn well better kick some major butt in the ratings. Because otherwise, for nearly the same money, they could put on two shows (if not four) and have twice (or four times) the opportunity to grab the audience.
In fact, the trend isn't to longer shows, but to SHORTER shows. 11 minute episodes.
So with all that in mind:
1. No. That's proprietary information I'm not authorized to reveal.
2. Yes, I think it can change. But I won't pretend it would be easy to change the corporate culture that doesn't believe in this notion at all. What it takes, of course, is one network taking a chance on one show that's SO GOOD, that it's a hit in defiance of that culture and all conventional wisdom. That would break the floodgates. The inevitable result would be a lot of crap would go on the air, fail, and the conventional wisdom would come back into play with a vengeance. The one hit would be the "exception that proves the rule" and that would be it for awhile. That's what happened after Simpsons. (Who remembers Fish Police?) But the door would be open at least a little. Over the very long haul change is possible.
3. One day? Sure. In fact, I hope so.
3a. I'm not saying it's never crossed my mind. I'd love it, of course. But (a) it's not up to me, and (b) it's never been a realistic possibility.

1. Why WOULD they know?! <sigh> I think many folks have been brought up to think of their heroes as all-knowing and infallible. It makes me, I'll admit, a little crazy.
Okay, let's start here: the galaxy is HUGE.
The Green Lantern Corps attempts to cover it all, but their membership numbers in the thousands for a galaxy that is HUGE.
Rimbor is a planet largely inhabited by criminals, smugglers, etc. And the government of Rimbor isn't simply corrupt, it's INSTITUTIONALLY CORRUPT. In fact, it's CONSTITUTIONALLY CORRUPT. The Green Lantern Corps is NOT welcome on Rimbor. It's treaty with the GLC states that the Corps can only show up on diplomatic missions or when requested. No one on Rimbor would request the GLC to come - even with a rogue Lantern (plus five other Earthlings) wreaking havoc, because they don't want to give the Corps an excuse to look into Rimborian activities.
So, yes, over a five year period, word of the attack leaked out to the larger sector - and the six Leaguers were labeled as bad guys - but the significance of that may not have registered to the local Lantern, who (a) would be used to the Rimborians vilifying other Lanterns and (b) not understand the significance of Superman, Batman, Hawkwoman, Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman being labelled as criminals.
Do you really think that every time a criminal is put on a watch list somewhere in the galaxy that every Lantern tells EVERY OTHER Lantern about it? That just makes no sense to me.
And that's assuming there's a Lantern in that sector AT ALL. Again, big galaxy, relatively small GLC.

Not so much a question as food for thouht...I'm still doing my research and reading through every past Q&A (tangent here...cant anybody do something about all the repeated posts? There are far too many "askef & answered"s...but leave the "spoiler requests" - they actually give some information sometimes) & I've noticed that you are obviously one of a large number of people who dont like "spoilers" - and you tend to berate those who activly post/seek them out. Now I realize this is your forum, so basically what you say goes...but are you aware (or even care) that there are just as many people out there, like myself, whose enjoyment of most media precludes our knowing how it turns out? Ill give you an example...I will wait YEARS before watching a critcally acclaimed Hollywood blockbuster until I know for sure its worth investing even two short hours (ie. I refuse to watch a movie where the main character/animal dies senselessly at the end... as its a waist of my time and insulting - and the "sometimes death is senseless" argument doesnt work for me...reality IS senseless enough, thats why I like my fiction to make some sense at least...its called "escape" and nit "the eavening news" for a reason).
understand that you definatly would not agree with me, but is it really that hard to understand why some people would get more enjoyment out of your work if they had more to look forward to than the old (an eternally frustrating"just watch and see"? - I cant even tell you how many times Ive up and left the room when everybody else has seen the movie and nobody will answer a simple yes or no question because they didnt want to "ruin it" for me, when in fact they just did.
Basically what im getting at is, could you please not villify those who hust want to know a little more than your giving...Im not asking you to give more, but just because someone doent think like you, doesnt mean they are thoughtless.

I think "villify" is an awfully strong word from what I've done. I'm often stunned by the desire for spoilers and appalled by those who SPOIL without any thought to those who don't want things spoiled and/or to the CREATORS who put in so much effort to create some surprise in their work. But it hardly rises to the level of hate speech.
And, no, I can't understand it. If you want a 100% guarantee out of your entertainment before you see it by knowing all that's coming... than we have very little in common.
That doesn't mean you're a bad person or that you're "thoughtless" for wanting the spoilers you want. But your thought processes defy my understanding. DEFY. MY. UNDERSTANDING.
But those differences are what makes the world go 'round, right?

A remake with to many changes so much that its like what they did in G.I.Joe and Transformers ?
The first version is always the best. If its not broke why try to fix it ? A re-shooting with a shrek cgi type animation would look fabulous. In any case I thank you so much for this series and I also loved Mummies Alive.

"It's just not up to me. I can't create a 'fan film' with someone else's property.
For starters, who would pay for it? Even if I and everyone else involved were willing to donate services for free - which honestly I'm not - who would pay for the materials? None of us have the hundreds of thousands of dollars that it would take to do even one episode at the quality level you'd expect. And why would we want to produce something at a lower quality level? Why would you want to watch it at a lower quality level?
And that's aside from the fact, that I'd never be allowed to work for Marvel, Disney, Sony or probably any other studio again ever. I'm a pro. They know that. I can't make a fan film, stealing someone else's characters, and just get away with it.
For this to happen, Sony would have to make a deal with Marvel/Disney to do this - and then they'd have to reassemble the key players from the original cast and crew. I'd LOVE for this to happen, but I don't see that as realistic.
I mean, don't get me wrong. I'd love to do more SpecSpideys. But it's less likely than me doing more Gargoyles, even."

I'd put Red Tornado, Hawkman and Hawkwoman just behind them. Neither Flash nor Plastic Man nor Zatanna nor Atom have super-strength, but their powers can sometimes give them more oomph. At the "bottom" are folks like Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Black Lightning, Rocket, though of course, they're all way stronger because of their training than the average human being. Since the video game is multiplatform, will there be any differences between any of the console versions than the others?
For example, will the nintendo DS or Wii version be drastically different from the PS3 or Xbox 360 version of the game since they have different graphics and control systems?
Also, why is Zatanna shown as an adult on the game page, but everyone else still as a minor?

I just saw someone's question about an error in the France timestamp in Misplaced and you telling him you can't be wrong because you were too careful. Obviously, you were not as careful as you thought because he was completely right. It says November 5 4:09 CEST when daylight savings in France and all other EU countries ends in the last Sunday of October. It should have been CET.
I kinda feel bad for the guy who just asked you a question about an obvious error of yours and you answered acting like you're above small errors like that. Hey, it happens to everybody, you could've been more polite and just admitted your mistake.

Hello Mr. Weisman. You won't remember me - I asked a question a while back about CN's rules about guns on the show.
Anyway, as somebody who really wants to write for television in the future, I'm asking you if you have any tips for breaking into the industry. I'm a high school junior so I'm beginning to look at colleges and was wondering if you had any advice to give out when it comes to getting into the buisness of television writing.
As always, love the series and can't wait for more!

"First and foremost, you write. Then write some more. Then do a little writing. Read a lot. Write some more. Read some more. Read a lot. Write a lot. Study story structure. Study great literature. Study myth and legends. Joseph Campbell. Listen to how people talk. How they really talk. Learn your craft. Get a kick-ass education. Write. Read.
Write.
Get copies of animation (or other television) scripts. Learn the format.
Write spec scripts for shows that you like. Try to use those specs to get an agent. Then your agent can use those specs to get you work. Write more specs. If you can't get an agent, send the specs to production companies that you admire. Don't send a Batman spec to Warner Bros or a Gargoyles to Disney. Legally, they can't risk reading those. But you can send Batman to Disney and Gargoyles to Warners. (I know it sounds weird. There's a real good reason for this, but it's a whole other question, so for now just trust me.) Actually, you shouldn't be writing a Gargoyles spec at all, since that show isn't producing new episodes now. You don't want your spec to come off as yesterday's news. Keep reading. Keep writing. Try writing a pilot script and a short bible for an original series. Try using those to get an agent or work (any work, you need credits on your resume.)
Oh, yeah. PROOFREAD. PROOFREAD. PROOFREAD. Read your own work aloud, you catch more mistakes that way. Read. Write. Write some more. Get used to a lot of rejection. A LOT OF REJECTION.
That's the best advice I can give you except this: writing for television is an extremely difficult career to break into, let alone succeed at; so if you don't really have a PASSION for it, then do something else. You'll need that passion to see you through a lot of dark times. If you can be happy doing anything else, then do that other thing.

I really enjoyed the first episode of Young Justice: Invasion. I have a couple questions:
1. It seems that as team is still covert and being run by Nightwing. Would you consider the team as Earth-16's equivalent to the Outsiders?
2. What made you decide to not have the viewer hear Blue Beetle's suits discussions with Jaime?

1. No.
2. It was funnier that way. And it put an audience member unfamiliar with Blue in the same position as the other characters like Robin and Lagoon Boy. But mostly it was funnier that way.

Hi Greg,
Let me first say that there are plenty of things about Young Justice that I really enjoy, but I don't want to waste your time by listing everything. I do have one question though:
In "Happy New Year!", when it's revealed what happened during the 16 hours that some league members were missing, it seems like no one had figured it out already. Are we really supposed to believe that Batman (the world's greatest detective) just gave up trying to figure out where he went? I mean, he had plenty of time to investigate it. Again, thanks for a great show!

I don't think he "gave up", but Batman isn't omniscient. I honestly don't see how detective skills could have possibly led him to figure out that the answer was RIMBOR.

If people are saying you ruined Young Justice, I don't think you did, I'm more curious about the show more than ever. Love Tim's look, and attitude, and loving that Dick still isn't part of the League. I had a feeling that Bumblebee would be in it, Love that Cassie is Wondergirl, and Blue Beetle is funny when he's talking to the Scarab. Okay, now the big part.
I'm so glad Dick hasn't lost his personality over five years, but will we be seeing more of his wordplay in the future is my question (don't have to answer, will be following intensly.
I think the time skip was perfect, since and invasion like what was seen today could take a lot of planning, and Vandal has some kind of plan, I just know it.
Okay, my rant is over, but overall, I was WHELMED, but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, so I guess I was OVERwhelmed. LOL, got in a bit of Dick's wordplay.

1. In the 2nd episode of the Pilot for Gargoyles, Owen mentions that Wyvern castle is haunted. Was this just originally a throw away line similar to Matt Bluestone's line about the Illuminati, or was did was the line meant all long to lay the seeds for a possible episode in the (then) future about the ghost of Hakon and the Captain? Or has it been so long that you honestly don't remember, because if it was that I honestly do understand.

8.) Last but certainly not least, Wally and Artemis’s romance on this show is not only my favorite on the show, but might be my favorite romance on all the show’s you’ve produced. That’s no small feat amongst company like Goliath/Eliza, Fox/Xanatos, Peter/Gwen, Spider-Man/Black Cat. As a Wally West fan (my favorite of the Flashes), you and the YJ crew have also done something I didn’t think possible. Make me want to see him end up with someone besides Linda Park. Not that I wouldn't mind that as a detour, but as long as all roads end with him and Artemis together I'd be happy. I also thought Wally scooping her up before their first kiss and Artemis being fine with it was adorable as well. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give major props to Jason Spisak and Stephanie Lemelin. Those two have had cracking chemistry from day one Artemis showed up. Whether it's them bickering or in the more tender moments, they deserve just as much credit as you and the crew did for bringing this relationship to life. I imagine it was probably a joy to watch them interacting at the table readings and/or voice recordings. Anyways this one wasn’t a question so much as me giving you and the crew a pat on the backs for creating one of my favorite romances in animation. I look forward to where both Wally and Artemis end up going in Season 2.

Well, since you wrote this, Mattel offered the opportunity to get Miss Martian and Superboy (in his standard costume) in the six inch size via pre-order. Unfortunately, they didn't get enough pre-orders to justify it, so they cancelled the offer. I was pretty bummed, actually. But the fans spoke to their disinterest in the product at that price-point, so there's not much for me to get all Loboish about.

Flash is more likely to see Kid Flash back in Central City. And as you've seen, Artemis and Green Arrow have regular outings in Star City. But both stop by occasionally. Superman, during Season One, didn't view Superboy as a sidekick.

Ok, my question is about the "death rules" in your shows, AKA the conditions under which you could kill a character off (for example, you said in your Gargoyles' rambles that you could show Othello and Desdemona in "City of Stone, Part 1" because A)the audience already knew they were dead and B)it already knew they'd be back as Coldstone, otherwise you couldn't have personalized the victims of the massacre; you also said that, even though you killed off the Magus in "Avalon, Part 3", you couldn't actually say outloud that he was dead).

Personally I hope Aqualad keeps his head clear because being a leader of a team is already enough to worry about. 1. First and foremost, the decision was to take things on a case-by-case basis. Since, living in the world that they do, there are always going to be exceptions. But generally, they decided on the biological/chronological age of 18 as the cut-off.

Hi Greg. I just wanted to say that I know how frustrating it can be working on a show that draws from so many years of comic book mythology and has so many diehard fans. You can't please everyone and those who are not pleased seem to be the most vocal. That being said... Young Justice is AMAZING. You have managed to make so many characters in the DC Universe (or is that Nation?) that I once thought of as superfluous or one-dimensional... utterly fascinating. Auld Acquaintance was an amazing ending for the first season and I can not wait for Young Justice Invasion. As I said, I know some people aren't pleased with things like Zatanna being young enough to be on the Team , the addition of Icon and Rocket or there being 3 Green Lanterns on Earth simultaneously, etc. But DC (like Marvel) exists in a Multiverse and this is YOUR reality. The rest of us are lucky enough to get a peek at it. So... get on board or get out of the way!

First of all, let me say that how much I have always enjoyed Gargoyles. It was a high point of the afternoon for my younger brothers and me during the original run (while our mother enjoyed having a half hour relatively free of sibling squabbles), and now I'm having a lot of fun introducing the show to my 4-year-old son. So, you see, your show has multi-generational appeal! Thank you for all your hard work and vision.
Secondly, I guess my question is about your writing process. I recently discovered via this site your ideas for the prospective Gargoyles spin-offs. This suggests to me that you write with a, for lack of a better term, "master plan" in mind. Unlike, say, David Milch, who famously writes and re-writes furiously as new ideas occur to him, and actually plans out very little.
1)Would you say this is accurate?
2)If so, do you ever deviate from this plan, if a new and different idea strikes you?
3)Again if so, would you mind providing an example? (A Gargoyles show example would be just fine, I'm not asking for spin-off spoilers here!)

1. I can't speak for David Milch, but yes, I do better when I've planned ahead. That doesn't mean I don't allow for new ideas and/or rewriting. I do. I just would rather have the structure in place to allow new ideas to grow, rather than - generally - winging it.
2. Yes. (Gotta start reading all the questions before answering any.)
3. Uh... one that comes to mind is one we didn't do. In "Grief", we belatedly came up with the idea to let Coyote kill the travelers, who wouldn't die because Anubis was off-line, so to speak. And if we had come up with that idea a bit sooner, I definitely would have incorporated it, because it's a GREAT idea. But unfortunately, the idea didn't strike us until AFTER the episode was completed.

First off, I dearly love the show; I've stuck with it ever since January of last year, and I'm really glad I did! Liking the characterizations, the shoutouts and in-jokes and other little details put in there to show that, yeah, you and your guys think about all of this and enjoy your work. And I gotta say that my favorite ship is Wally and Artemis, so I'm pleased with developments there and looking forward to seeing where it goes!
But this is a question site, and I do have some serious questions, mostly on Zeta-Beams, the Watchtower and other Space Tech, being a big space and sci-fi geek:
1. First off, who invented the Zeta-beam tech that's so omnipresent in the series? Is it a native Earth development or an alien import?
1a. After invention comes development: who built the Zeta-beam network (almost certainly WayneCorp, but just checking)?
2. Since there's a usable and practical teleportation system available in the setting, is there any non-hero use of the system (or potential plans to open the system to civilian use)? If not, is there some aspect to the system (like high energy costs) that makes it cost-prohibitive on a mass scale? Or does the Justice League prefer to keep the competitive advantage to themselves?
3. Next up, the Watchtower; gotta start with the basics here: How do people--especially Earth-based astronomers--*miss* seeing an orbiting station the size of a major office building?
4. Assuming that they don't miss it, that argues that the Watchtower isn't alone up there; has Earth-16 started developing a space industry (like we're doing now, with the new company Planetary Resources) with space stations, asteroid mining, solar energy stations, etc.?
4a. And given that energy costs for launchers are the primary prohibiting factors in orbital development and that there are many heroes capable of orbital lifts (Superman, Capt. Marvel, the Green Lanterns, just for starters), has NASA and other organizations and companies asked them for help in getting things to orbit? (Several millions dollars for a one-use rocket that could explode if someone did the math just a little bit wrong, or a nice but smaller check for the Justice League... hmm... decisions, decisions... :) )
And that's it for my questions; I want to say thanks to you for taking the time to look them over and maybe answer them (I recognize that they're a bit oddball compared to your usual fare :D )

I will try to keep this from becoming a spoiler-asking question, hopefully! Though due in part to the… specificity, I don’t know how successful this will be.
You mentioned before that there was undoubtedly going to be (at least one) lgbt character on the show. I won’t ask who, as spoilers, but I guess thatâ€"the ending of the first season really threw me, in a sad way. A sudden parade of heteronormativity at the end of a show season where I had a lot of hope that there might be an lgbt relationship acknowledged by the writing hit pretty hard!
I know that one person does not control all the creative decisions of a tv production by themself, but I guess I wondered if a canonically acknowledged lgbt character was still a thing that WILL happen. Because it is well and good to say “undoubtedly they exist,†but ultimately never acknowledging that within the show does lgbt kids no good! Because saying something like, “obviously chances are someone on the team is lgbt,†is actually really meaningless to us lgbt people if that part of their identity is never shown or confirmed. It just continues to make us invisible in the mainstream media (particularly kid’s media) while still playing up having some diversity, and that does hurt.

Okay, I'm pretty sure I NEVER said we were going to acknowledge an lgbt relationship on the show. I'm quite certain that we would not be allowed to on television. NOT ALLOWED. I don't know where you got any other idea. I've been pretty consistent about how I FEEL about this. I think it's cowardly. But I've also admitted that I'm complicit in that cowardice, as I know that if I insisted on bravery - and remained adamant - I would at best be overruled and at worst FIRED. And I need my job. I'm not proud of this, and I'm not happy about it. But that's the current situation. I imagine it does hurt, and I wish I could ameliorate that pain. But at this point in time, I cannot. I'm sorry.
Instead, what I've tried to do is write the characters consistently in the hope that someday things change and that some subtleties put in place now will help in their own small way to inch us forward. I also hope to have more freedom in the YJ companion comic, as comics have a history of being more progressive in this area. But we'll have to see. I'm afraid that for now, that's the best I can do.

I read a book about "monsters" in medieval art and apparently St Augustine claimed that even "monsters" were worthy of salvation but only if they were descended from man. Apparently Augustine's comments were very important to missionaries and their work. Could this have been a reason that Katherine didn't bapitise the Gargoyles as they weren't descended from man? Or was it a more literal, no priest on Avalon king of thing?

In some ways it seems the surviving Gargoyles were quite lucky with who survived. As Hudson was elderly and the trio were teens, none were in a position to challenge Goliath even if they wanted to. There was a very clear chain of command. There was also no females, so there was no conflict amongst the males about mates up until Angela joined.
1)What would have happened if Goliath had survived with a female group or predominatly female group of Gargoyles such as Hyppolyta, Desdemona or True for example/etc? Would he have felt obligated to take a mate from this group to preserve his species?
2)What if all the survivors were of Goliath's generation? After what happened with Wyvern would these adults in their prime have still accepted Goliath's leadership?(E.G Iago, Coldstone, Desdemona, Hyppolyta etc)
P.S If you think the questions are too general could you please answer regarding the characters that we've met or you've told us about from the Wyvern Clan. Thanks.

2. Ditto. It's not about whether the question is too general or specific, it's the very nature of the question that puts me off. Everything is about context. A hypothetical brings no context except what the answerer chooses to add. And for me to create proper context for questions like these, I'd have to write entire series with the revised scenario ... and I'm not about to do that here.

1. Both were equally effected, but before Robin put the kryptonite away, he put a Cure-Tech chip on Superman's neck. That's what caused Superman to pass out.
2. There are no differences in abilities between Green and White Martians.

Hey Greg, loving Young Justice so far, so keep up the good work! I just had a few questions in mind that I hope aren't simply in the annoying "no comment" territory as they mostly pertain to the choices you and others involved have made as opposed to just spoilers.
1. Was there ever discussion to use Tim Drake or Jason Todd instead of Dick Grayson for Robin? Personally, Grayson is my favorite, but I'm a huge fan of how you've incorporated some Drake-traits into him. This is probably my favorite incarnation of the character in any medium that I've seen!
2. I LOVE the inclusion of the ranking system for the teams. Who decided on which people should be ranked above others (outside of the obvious Superman-1, Batman-2, etc)? Was that a subject that caused a lot of debate amongst the writers?
3. I'm curious...I can see why Vandal Savage, Ra's al Ghul, and Lex Luthor are in The Light, but why the others? Queen Bee seems to be getting quite a bit of screen time for someone a little out of the mainstream. Was the choice of using people like her, Brain, Sportsmaster, and others that are frequently showcased just a matter of the writers/producers really liking those characters or is there a plan set in motion?
4. What was the design process of Riddler like? His look is quite different in some ways than what I was expecting.

2. It's not a ranking system. Designations are based on the order of entry into either the League or the Team, etc. So, no, no debate. Cause it's objective not subjective.

In the early days of "Ask Greg", you did a little mini-ramble about how the key to a great villain is to give him or her traits that echo the traits of the hero. You illustrated it with Batman's rogues gallery, in the course of which you mentioned that while you were able to fit Riddler into it (since he's setting riddles and puzzles against Batman, who's a detective), he never grabbed you as much as the other villains.
I haven't seen any of the episodes of "Young Justice" past "Downtime" yet, but I've read about them and learned that Riddler appears in them as one of the Light's agents (and was even introduced in an episode where he's in a prison for super-villains, all the other super-villains make fun of him, but when there's an attempted break-out, Riddler is the only one who escapes). Have your thoughts on Riddler changed since you wrote that mini-ramble (it was in the late 90's, I recall, so there'd have been much time for that)? Of course, it might not be relevant to his role in "Young Justice", since its leads are the team rather than Batman (even though he's one of its supervisors, and Robin is one of its members), so the antagonists in "Young Justice" would be chosen more for how they reflect the traits, strengths, and weaknesses of the team than those of Batman.

Exactly. And in fact, since the real opponent to the Team is the Light, Riddler's role has more to do with how he fits into the larger organization - as opposed to how he personally resonates with our Team members.

*Issues #0-19 have all hit the stands and are available at comic shops or online.
*Issue #20 hits the stands this week. It's the start of a six-part story that is BIG. REALLY BIG. It updates the book, bringing in our Season Two cast, and is set one month prior to the start of Season Two with flashbacks to a couple untold - or only hinted at - tales from the Season One era, plus, by the end of the six-parter, a little story from immediately after Season One. Christopher Jones is just doing some stellar work on the book. And I'm pretty proud of the story and script, if I do say so myself.
*Issue #21 is being colored by Zac Atkinson as we speak.
*Issue #22 is being pencilled by Chris.
*Issues #23 & #24 are both fully scripted and waiting.
*Issue #25 is plotted. I'll be starting on the script tonight.
As always, you don't have to read the comic to enjoy the t.v. series or vice versa. But you get more out of BOTH if you watch/read both.

When I realized there was a time-skip in this episode, my intial thought was that you might have made this move out of inspiration from the DC relaunch (ie. an origin story, like the Justice League in the relaunched comics, taking place five years prior). You must understand that it seemed reasonable for a time, because I believed for a moment that everything that happened in Season One seemed more like an origin story since there is a time-skip this season. However, while watching “Happy New Year,†and thinking about the time-skip some more, I have come to a possible conclusion and wish to ask you this: Is it possible the reason for the time-skip has something to do with the upcoming Young Justice: Legacy video game (coming in 2013, as I’ve read on the internet)? I might have asked questions about the game before in a prior posting, but now the time-skip seems to make sense and everything seems to connect. No other person prior to me might have asked you about it, but I believe that whatever happened within the unexplained five years might have something to do with whatever events will occur in the upcoming game, hence the game’s presented tagline, “One will Rise. One Will Fall. One will Die.†Is my deduction correct?

Since it appears that it is unlikely that your version of spider-man won't finish it's storyline, did you already know how it would have ended if given the chance? If so, was there any major storylines you wanted to address during you're intended run? This is in case father time catches up with you and you don't take your vision to the grave. :)

*Issue 20 is scripted and ready for pencilling.
*Issue 21 is being scripted now.
*Issue 22-25 are all loosely plotted.
[All this has required some adjustments. The original plan was to finish all the stories set DURING Season One before rebranding the book. But TPTB at DC understandably decided that since the television show has already been rebranded, we shouldn't wait that long to rebrand the comic. And given that, I wanted to launch the rebranding with a BIG story that featured all - or nearly all - of the Team. So the Green Arrow, Black Canary, Artemis, Red Arrow story (set after episode 114), I originally had planned as a two-parter for issues 20-21 will have to wait. Given enough issues (keep buying those books people!), we'll get to everything eventually - including that Arrow-Family story. The new structure will use our timestamps to allow us to bounce back and forth (even within a single issue) from Season One to Season Two to the gap between seasons and BEYOND...]"

In previous answers you stated many times that keeping with early DC tradition was the main reason for using Dick & Wally - even once saying "it wouldnt make sense not to use Dick...my question is, where is that logic when it comes to Aqualad or Wondergirl? Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the new Aqualad (really wished Donna was going to br on the team, though), but it seems like this flies in the face of your own logic.

1. If you're asking about their Thanagarian names, they're Katar & Shayera.
2. It doesn't. Look at the origins of ALL the other Robins. They depend on Dick already existing. Look at Nightwing's origin. It depends on him having been Robin first. In contrast, look at Aqualad's origin. It doesn't depend on Garth having already been Aqualad. It only depends on him taking heroic action, and Aquaman wanting a protege. Look at Cassie . The fundamental thing about her origin is her parentage, not her predecessor. Sure, Donna influenced Cassie's early appearances in the old comics, but her origin doesn't depend on Donna. In any case, I'm neither confirming or denying Donna's status on Earth-16.

I've never done this kind of thing before but I'm actually extremely curious about a topic regarding to the series Young Justice. Sorry if this may seem confusing, but I'll try and get it out as simply as I can make it:
In the episode "Misplaced" when all of the kids and adults are separated into two different dimensions, Robin states that he can't even contact Red Arrow, letting the audience know that Red Arrow is either eighteen years old or possibly older. I also read a question that you had answered where you clarified this as being true.
However, after the episode Auld Acquaintance, it's revealed that Red Arrow is indeed a clone and has only been around for three years. So if I'm getting this right, the original Roy Harper is eighteen and thus is why the clone looks to be that age. But because the Red Arrow clone is really only three years of age, how come he's not in the same dimension as the kids? I don't know, maybe Klarion's magic took in the factor that physiologically, he is 18 years old.
Sorry for my ranting, but I'm just curious. Thanks!

As a twenty year old female college student, there isn’t a lot of things that will get me up early on a Saturday morning. But I cannot lie, Young Justice has tugged on the heartstrings of my inner child and I have truly enjoyed every episode. I love how the show is intended for a younger audience but throws in witty lines & scenarios for mature viewers too. I also really enjoy the “dark/edginess†of the plot that keeps you wondering even after the show has ended. The creativity, thoughtfulness and talent that you and your team put into every episode shows each week.

Someone in a Captain Action discussion group, found a clip from a Gargoyles episode entitiled "Eye of the Beholder". There is a brief appearance by Action Boy, who is the sidekick of Captain Action, a 1960's action figure from Ideal toys. His emblems were blacked out, I'm sure for copyright purposes. The first season of "Young Justice" takes place over the course of half a year, starting on the Fourth of July and continuing to New Year's Eve in the Season One finale (with episodes set on Halloween and Thanksgiving along the way). I remember that the first season of "The Spectacular Spider-Man" similarly stretched from the start of the school year in September to Thanksgiving (with a Halloween episode along the way), and that the second season got up at least to Valentine's Day. The time progression in "Gargoyles" was more vague, but we had two Halloween stories ("Eye of the Beholder" and the Double Date story) and three wintry episodes in New York ("Her Brother's Keeper", which ends with a snowfall, "Re-Awakening", and "The Price"), as well as a clear timeline for the Stone of Destiny story.
I like this sense of the year's progress through the seasons and landmark days (like the Fourth of July and Halloween), but it doesn't seem that common in animated series outside your own work. I've seen two speculations on why that element is so rare in animated series. One is that a lot of the people who engage in such creative work aren't big on continuity and change, far less than you are. Another is that most people involved in creating animated television series live in or near Los Angeles and other parts of California, where the climate is pretty much the same year around and there's less a sense of four seasons than in other parts of the United States. I was wondering what your thoughts were on these theories.

Both these theories seem valid to me, but they probably pale from the economic explanation: if you progress through the seasons then you have to redress backgrounds and characters, and that's expensive. Me, I believe it's WORTH the expense. But that's only true if you're really going to DO something with it. If you're not, then there's not much point. (We also did it on W.I.T.C.H. by the way.)

Anyways, I was wondering about the Light. How exactly did you come up with this evil cabal of villains? I'm not asking for spoilers, just what made you decide to take these select villains, and organize them into such a secretive, manipulative, and mysterious way of organized crime. The Secret Society and the Injustice League in the comics they weren't anywhere near as badass and secret as this group is! Did the Illuminati from Gargoyles influence their creation a bit?

The Illuminati may have been an influence, but mostly it was Brandon and I (and later Kevin) sitting down and figuring out what kind of opposition we wanted for our series and what their motivations would be and what their goals would be and finally, who would be chosen to carry those banners. As always, we looked for diversity, personality, power ranges - but mostly CHOPS.

1. Batman's been a big influence since back in the Gargoyles days. Nothing specific, but it's probably still floating around in my brain. I'm less familiar with JLU, so I'm sure it's had less of an influence. I know early on we did some things intentionally differently to distance ourselves from that great show. But for example, the six Leaguers chosen to be missing for 16 hours was definitely influenced by the cast of the original Justice League series.
2. Yes. By now you probably realize that Flash was NOT included because we needed him back on Earth for our Impulse intro.

Watched the season finale, and WOW. What an ending. Here I've been telling my friends the mole was a Starro-controlled Red Arrow. Boy was I half-wrong. And the fate of Original Roy-OK, that was cool. It's a way to get the cybernetic arm in without the needless killing of a baby, very nice. And the team taking on the league, very cool. I'm glad Clark made peace with Connor, very cool. Honestly, my favorite part of the whole episode? Tying up the romantic plots. Thank you, especially for Zatana grabbing Dick like that, very funny. And if the clips they showed for season 2(hopefully starting next week) are correct; Oh, you just went up beyond my top 5 favorite creators. Thank you for an amazing first season of Young Justice, please pass this on to the rest of the cast & crew, and I eagerly await more of the Team!

In Young Justice, three separate designation systems were established (that we know of thus far): one for members of the Justice League, one for members of The Team, and one for authorized guests. Here’s where I need to ask two tricky questions about the topic.
a. From her introduction into the show until the concluding events of “Misplaced,†Zatanna was registered as designation A03. Afterwards, she would become an official member of The Team, but we do not know if her designation changed from A03 to B08 for the rest of Season One. If it turns out that it was changed, was Zatanna’s former designation of A03 just left open for someone else to fill? It would definitely explain why Vandal Savage’s designation was A04 and not A03.
b. The designation B06 was reserved for “Speedy/Red Arrow†(the clone) in the event he would join The Team officially. He stuck around for at least two missions with The Team and then he became a member of the Justice League as designation 21. Since “Red Arrow†was given a new designation, what happened to his former designation as B06? Should I assume that everyone from Artemis onwards moved a designation up (for example, Artemis now can become B06 instead of B07)?

I hope you don't shut down the site, it's excellent being able to reach out to a creator I so admire and discuss their work. On that subject, I was wondering who are some of your influences are as a writer (obviously Shakespeare). Which writers serve as your models or inspiration for plotting stories, writing dialogue, and the writing process as a whole?
Are you familiar with / a fan of Joss Whedon's work? Between Gargoyles and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you two wrote characters facing some similar challenges (tormented individuals, tragically and unwittingly bound to each other, frequently dealing with the burden of immortality). Obviously Gargoyles came first, I've just noticed you two writing about many of the same themes, and was wondering if you enjoy or find inspiration in his work in general.

I was wondering about the Young Justice video game. Usually when a game comes out on multiple platforms there are differences between each one, both major and minor, due to differences between the system. As Young Justice: Legacy has been revealed to be available on at least five systems, there will most likely be at least minor differences. Is there a specific version you feel is the most canon out of them all?
