Greg, now that Young Justice is over, is there any chance you cold post a ramble or something with all the lines cut for time? (My apologies if that would be considered spoilers)
I've done that already. Check the archives.
Hi Greg! I have a question about Young Justice.
1. In "Agendas" how long was Superboy in a trance for? After Lex said "Red Sun" and he zoned out. The background changed to night time but it didn't say when.
Off the top of my head, I can't remember exactly. But it was long enough for the sun to fully set.
How did the parallel universe/Earth-16 approach come about in the development of Young Justice? Was the decision to set the show in an alternate timeline influenced by the discovery that you couldn't use Donna Troy as one of the Team's founding members? Obviously there was no way you'd have followed the comics to the letter even if you had used Donna and Garth, but maybe not being able to use all the founding Titans was what prompted you to 'embrace' the series as a parallel universe show - since that was one of the first big statements made about the show when it was announced back in 2010?
No, it had nothing to do with any specific characters.
We knew that we'd be doing some stuff different; we knew we wanted to surprise our audience. We could have just done that without labeling it. But since (at the time) DC had 52 Earths, we figured we could - in our way - be IN continuity with their multiverse by choosing an unclaimed Earth (which is what we thought Earth-16 was).
Greg, do you have any plans to post ANY of your scripts online? Your writing is clear, and structurally, they're a fantastic resources for writers trying to break into animation. The way you use sfx as action is a illuminating!
Currently, the ONLY way to see one of your scripts is to go all the way to The Writer's Guild in Los Angeles, and even there, you're not allowed to copy the script. Even if you feel uncomfortable showing the whole script ( just an act or two is all we need), posting it as a media resource on the site - perhaps as a .pdf so it is difficult to copy - would give peace of mind? It doesn't matter if the script is from YJ, Gargoyles, or Spider-Man...
There's no way to post a script here at ASK GREG with the correct formatting. I know. I've tried.
out of these 3 heroes Spiderman wolverine and batman who do
you find the most interesting.
I find all three interesting. You'll find - as others have - that ranking things isn't big on my list of stuff to do. Just not the way my brain works.
Twenty years ago today, September 29th, 1994, GARGOYLES had its World Premiere in two theaters at the multiplex on Pleasure Island at Walt DisneyWorld in Orlando Florida.
I tell the story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVQfxGNu7sk
HAPPY TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY, GARGOYLES FANS!!!!
I did another PodCast, this one with more of a focus on STAR WARS REBELS: http://www.solosound.net/ioncannon/4042/
Greg,
I don't think I made myself clear in my previous post. I honestly didn't have a distaste for the show's version of Wally West from strictly a character standpoint (personality/behavior/etc) aside from him continuing to sit things out after the end of "Darkest" (which I thought took the heroic aspect away from his character). The character itself was likable and well rounded for the most part. More so than on other shows he has been a part of. I had absolutely no problems loving Wally on Young Justice. If I did, I wouldn't have bothered commenting in the first place, and most likely wouldn't have continued watching the show as I did. But just because a character is a "clear fan favorite" doesn't necessarily mean that the show's treatment of the character and/or their story always "worked" for those fans.
And I actually really liked the ideas that the show was presenting to me in regards to Wally. I mentioned that I was always a fan of Wally & Dick's friendship in the comics. I loved Artemis, and liked the idea of her and Wally together. And I thought Wally's inferiority to Barry (and later Bart) could have been interesting and meaningful. But I ended up thinking that the show's execution of those things was lacking.
I won't get into too much detail this time since I know we disagree, but I just never felt that Dick was ever shown to be a true and loyal friend to Wally on the show when it mattered. Nor do I think that Artemis was ever shown to like any of the things about him you mentioned in your breakdown of their relationship on the show itself. I just didn't feel there was any real substance when it came to their side of things. And if I don't buy that Wally's relationship with Artemis and his friendship with Dick was a mutual thing, then their treatment of him goes a completely different direction.
So things like the show saying that Wally needed and deserved to be with someone who was only shown to ridicule him, hit him, and generally tell him how awful he was unless he was propping her up ("Bereft" and "Insecurity") like it did in "Denial" was a big negative to me. As was Artemis singling him out as the reason she wouldn't tell the team about her family during her therapy session. It also makes Dick routinely going out of his way to make fun of Wally, sometimes even hitting on the points that Wally was supposed to be insecure about, seem incredibly cruel. And I don't mean to say that Wally was perfect at all when it came to these things on the show. But there were moments where I felt he acted like a true and loyal friend to Dick (like during their conversation in "Performance") when it mattered. And Wally practically gushed about how great Artemis was and stood up for her for the majority of "Insecurity" when she needed it. His side of things was balanced out in my opinion.
Also, I will admit that I'm clearly biased when it comes to how the show handled Wally's inferiority since the story of him becoming the Flash in the comics was always a big deal for me. So the show having him admit to being humiliated (when he needed Barry/Bart to carry him away from Neutron's blast because he wasn't fast enough on his own) and having Bart openly mock him ("Cause you don't have the Allen eye!") for not being on Barry/Bart's level in "Bloodlines" was hard to watch from that standpoint. And while I knew Wally was a goner the moment Bart showed up (Wally eventually disappearing for nearly half the season only reinforced that idea), I was hoping for at least a satisfying death. Instead, Wally was killed simply because he was the one speedster that didn't belong on the show. A fact that the show dedicated an entire episode to pounding home earlier in the season (in mostly a comedic fashion no less). It's just really hard to say that Wally was worthy of being part of the Flash legacy when the show does that. And I don't mean to say that there's anything wrong with not making Wally the Flash, but I felt the way the show handled it (humiliating/mocking/killing him simply for being an inferior speedster) ultimately disrespected a story that was very important to me and a character that I loved.
Okay, well, like you said: we disagree. I get that you didn't like how we handled things. (I got it some time ago.) But this just seems like more of the same to me. An interpretation without nuance.
I don't feel like we humiliated Wally at all. We mocked him, sure (in a good-natured way, I believe), but he mocked himself (in a self-deprecating comedic way), and he mocked others and others got mocked and good-natured mocking went on all around, and I see ZERO evidence that Wally got it any worse than anyone else.
I also don't see his lack of speed (relative to Bart and Barry) as being even vaguely relevant. Wally was MORE of a hero for fighting the good fight with less speed. From DAY ONE, Brandon and I saw his relatively contained powers as a BONUS for his character. From an action standpoint, writing and boarding for Barry and Bart was WAY more difficult, I can tell you that for sure. Wally was way more fun to choreograph and utilize in action.
I think you missed the entire point of "Bloodlines". Pretty much completely. Wally & Jay wind up saving Bart & Barry just as many times as Wally himself was saved. But your interpretation ignores that, because it doesn't fit your preconceived notion that he was being humiliated by Bart. Which is FLAT-OUT not the case. You also ignore the conversation that Bart and Wally have in "Summit," which indicates clearly how much Bart respects and admires Wally.
And frankly, as I've said before, Wally is my FAVORITE SPEEDSTER. With Jay in second, Barry third and Bart fourth. So the notion that we disrespected Mr. West is just flat out untrue, whether or not you like how we handled him.
We believe Dick loved Wally as a friend. We believe Artemis loved Wally dearly and with all her heart. We believe that M'gann, Zatanna, Conner, Kaldur and all the rest, cared for and valued Wally. We think we showed that Bart and Barry and Artemis and Dick and Wally's parents and the others were devastated by his HEROIC SACRIFICE. And we do see that death as being an Heroic Sacrifice, not at taking place "because he was the one speedster that didn't belong on the show." I don't even know what that means. Wally, who was safely up on the Watchtower, joined the other two of his own free will. And carried on right through to the end, despite the fact that he KNEW it meant his end. Choosing to view his death in any other light is frankly mind-boggling to me.
But, AGAIN, I'm not trying to change your mind, because it's way beyond clear that I can't. And you're clearly not going to change mine. So can we just let it drop now, please? We're just going in circles.
Dos Garfield have his power before B16 B17 B18 join the team
SPOILER REQUEST.
Does the team know miss marshin ages slower Does Garfield and Tim join the team the same year
I'm assuming these are two separate questions. (Punctuation would definitely help.)
1. At this point, yes, the Team knows Martians (including Miss M.) ages more slowly than humans.
2. SPOILER REQUEST.
Are Bart and Jaime dating or just close friends? (Does this count as a spoiler? Sorry if it does!)
Just friends.
In anticipation of my FIVE panels at Long Beach Comic Con, here's a nice little article/interview on 13th Dimension:
http://13thdimension.com/greg-weisman-from-gargoyles-to-young-justice-to-novels-and-more/
Is there a viewing order for Gargoyles that differs from the airing order?
You said that the airing order hadn't aired a single episode out of order in a quote here:
http://www.gargoyles-fans.org/reviews/index.htm
But I believe that was before season 2 was finished.
I'm just about to start season 2 and wanted to clarify this before I got too far in.
Thanks! And I should have another question on a completely different topic in a couple of minutes.
Well, by now, you've probably viewed everything. (In any case, I hope you haven't been waiting six months for this response, as there are many other resources where this information is available.)
A couple episodes did air out of order the first time through. But the DVDs are all in the correct order.
The correct airing order is available at http://gargwiki.net/Episode_Guide.
In your ramble on "Future Tense", you commented that nowadays you wouldn't be allowed to do such a story, where almost everyone gets seemingly killed, even if (as happened in "Future Tense") it was revealed to be an illusion at the end.
In the "Failsafe" episode of "Young Justice", you got to use such a concept - almost all of the main and supporting cast is killed, and again it turns out to be an illusion. Did you have any difficulties with Standards & Practices over the numerous deaths (and deaths which, as I recall, showed the characters even being reduced to skeletons before being completely disintegrated), even when those deaths were revealed to be an illusion at the end? (I wonder if it helped, not only that it *did* turn out to be an illusion, that: a) the characters hypothesized for a while that the disintegration victims were really being teleported on board the aliens' spaceship and b) "Young Justice" airs on cable rather than on regular broadcast television.)
You're more or less answering your own question here.
We definitely were questioned about it.
It definitely helped that for a good chunk of time, the cast (and maybe the audience) think that the "deaths" were actually teleportations.
By the time they figure out otherwise, we were then very close to the reveal that it was all just a psychic conceit.
And, yes, it at least helps a little that the series is on cable. Most kids cable networks abide by FCC guidelines voluntarily. But they have more discretion.
How old is Adrian Toomes in Spectacular Spider-man?
If I ever set a specific age for him, I don't recall. I did not create an entire timeline for The Spectacular Spider-Man the way I did for Gargoyles and Young Justice. Mostly, because SpecSpidey was more contained and easier to keep track of.
Spider-Man question. Why didn't Spidey just tell Eddie and Gwen he was going to die on the streets if he didn't have the money to pay off the bills from the pictures of the lizard and spidey fight?
"Die on the streets"?
Gwen knew about his financial trouble, and ultimately forgave him. Even Eddie was willing to forgive him at that early stage. But neither felt that that excuse justified how he behaved.
In the Young Justice:Invasion episode "Runaways" what was the contents of the duffle bag Virgil Hawkins had when he and the other runaways escaped from Star Labs?
String cheese.
(Honestly, I don't know. Whatever stuff he thought he could use, I guess.)
1. How far did you get to making Spectacular Spider-Man season 3? Were you writing scripts or doing concept art?
2. Will there ever be a time where you'd reveal the full story of what could have been with season 3 of Spider-Man or will you leave it to our imaginations?
1. Neither. We never began. But we had plans.
2. Probably the latter, unless I get the opportunity to return to that world in some medium or another.
Is/was Young Justice in the same timeline as Batman: Under The Red Hood. There are so many similarities and the little glimpses of Jason todd resembled the one in BAtman: Under The Red Hood.
No.
I love the show young justice. I watched it online and was really really sad when I found out there were only two seasons. Once I finished the last episode I cried for an hour because you killed him!! How could you do that he was the best character ever!
It is still my favorite show but I was devastated.:'(
*the real heroes are the ones that don't make it out*
I'm not sure if that was an actual question or rhetorical. In some ways, we're glad that you cared enough about Wally to BE devastated. It means we did our job.
I don't know how to ask what I want to ask the way I want to ask it...If that makes any sense. But here goes...
First a little exposition. I am a gay man in my early 30's who was an active-duty Army Infantry soldure in Afghanistan in 2003-4, and currently in the National Guard.
That being said.
Many more years ago than I'd care to admit, you mentioned that one of my all-time favorite cartoons from my teenhood had a gay character...and I was, to say the least, esthatic (on the inside).
It ment that there was a great writer somewhere out there who knew that there was somebody like me somewhere out there.
An inteligent individual who was also a fearless warrior to boot...Despite what you may think, I am am not refering to Lexington (although I do love the character), but to Owen.
You see...I AM Owen. The witty, low speaking "straight man" (So to speak...not literaly of course...and, yes, I do see the irony). I'm also an attractive blond man who looks stunning in glasses (If I do say so myself. Which I don't. Other people say that).
I've just just always imagioned Owen as gay. For no particular reason other than, well, that's me on the screen there (These days I'm also an assistant to a general manager to the largest company you've never heard of).
I guess what I'm asking is...am I simply reflecting? Or is there somebody (specifically named Owen) in the Gargoyle reality who reflects me? (Besides Lexington, whom, as I've said, I love...but dosen't reflect me at all).
Owen is asexual. I don't know if that's disappointing or not. Puck is bisexual (at least). Of course, if you want Owen to be gay in your mental fan fiction, that's still totally cool.
Need some advice because I just became a screenwriter for a Television series based in Hong Kong. How much should I charger per 24 minute episode?
I'm not sure how to advise you. The short answer is get as much money as you can squeeze out of them.
Animation Guild Union minimums are just over $7K per 22-minute episode, if that helps. WGA minimums are much, much higher.
1)So far, you've said this Wildstorm character was included in a 'stealth way' and appeared in Young Justice season one. While it's been fun rewatching season one, it's been a challenge looking for this character. Could you please offer up another clue and who or where this character is?
3)In Young Justice, who designed and built the Hall of Justice?
3)Did the Light extract Red Volcano from Yellowstone after he was defeated by his siblings or did he escape himself?
4)In "Happy New Year," when was Adam Strange's first trip to Rann relative to when Martian Manhunter introduced him at the Watchtower (i.e. 2 months, 2 weeks, 2 days)?
1. Yes, I could.
2. The architect was probably John Stewart. I'd lay odds, Wayne Construction won the bid to build the place, with some (top secret) work done personally by the Lanterns, Superman and other Leaguers.
3. NO SPOILERS.
4. I'm afraid I don't have my YJ timeline handy at this office. You can try to ask this again.
(Okay, so one for four isn't TOO bad, is it?)

and here:
Spectacular Spider-Man Blu-Ray box set got announced yesterday. If we make those sales skyrocket, is there any chance we can bring it back or are we done? Let us fans know and we will get on it.
Let me put it this way: if the BluRay set doesn't do well, that's another nail in the coffin.
I have to admit I'm a little confused about the explanation as to why Wally wasn't helping out for most of the alien invasion during the second season of Young Justice. You say it was because Dick told him what to do, but didn't Dick take a shot at him for not helping out in "Darkest" when he told Wally that all he cared about was his 'stupid souvenirs'? I mean, it was clear that Wally didn't want anything to do with the hero life anymore. He did nothing but complain when he helped out in "Bloodlines". He was adamant about leaving 'the life' behind in "Depths". He told Bart that he and Artemis were planning to go right back into retirement in "Summit" without even talking it over with Artemis. If it didn't have to do with Artemis or his family, he appeared to want no part of it.
Of course there's nothing wrong with wanting to retire. But I thought it was clear that Dick resented Wally on some level for doing so based on that comment. But if Dick was the reason Wally wasn't helping out with the invasion, then Dick telling Wally that he only cares about his souvenirs makes absolutely no sense to me. Dick interrupted Wally's life knowing that he and Artemis were trying to leave the hero business behind. He just allowed Wally's little cousin to be kidnapped for torture. And he nearly got Conner killed in the process. So how can he have the nerve to tell Wally that he only cares about his souvenirs after all that if he's responsible for Wally not helping out in the first place? And for that matter, how does Dick continue to have complete authority over what Wally can and can't do with his life after that?
Also, I don't see why Wally had to play the part of the "mourning boyfriend" for months to make Artemis' death believable during an alien invasion when Artemis was shown to have moved on with her life and rejoined the team two weeks after Wally died. Were we supposed to believe that Wally was incapable of doing that? Even during a time when the fate of the world literally hung in the balance?
Really, I don't see any believable explanation for Wally not helping out besides him simply not wanting to do that. But you've mentioned multiple times that that was not the case. So it seems like you guys just didn't want to use Wally (or couldn't find a way to fit him in) as it didn't make any sense from either a story or character standpoint that he wouldn't help out.
In "Darkest," Dick takes a "shot" at Wally out of defensiveness and insecurity. He KNOWS Wally doesn't give a damn (in this context) about his souvenirs. He KNOWS this. And Dick doesn't resent Wally. Dick's simply unsure of his own position, of his own plans with Kaldur, so he lashes out at the person who's confronting him with fears he already has.
Dick doesn't have complete authority over Wally. Never did. But Dick is in charge of the Team, and Wally respects that. If Dick felt (rightly or wrongly) that Wally needs to hang back for now, maintaining the notion that he's out of the game - and maintaining his distance from Artemis/Tigress, then Wally will respect that, especially since there's not much he can do to help otherwise, beyond simply being another hero, something they have no shortage of. Dick is intentionally holding Wally in reserve for when he's needed and when his appearance will catch the bad guys off guard. See "Summit." (And, yes, Dick is also somewhat nervous about Wally coming into contact with an undercover Tigress, as he's not sure how either would deal with that situation. You can argue that Dick worries too much. But not that Dick doesn't respect his BEST FRIEND.)
As for Wally, in my mind, he's hardly adamant about staying in retirement, he's simply trying very hard to stick with a resolution that BOTH he and Artemis made. He knows - as Artemis knows - how seductive the hero life is. So he's trying very hard to be strong. Sure, in "Bloodlines" he has some attitude about Impulse, certainly, but he absolutely is NOT complaining through the whole episode. And he doesn't bitch about being called in by Nightwing AT ALL. NOT ONCE.
In "Summit," he does tell Bart that he and Artemis will retire again, because he's assuming that's what they both want. It had been a long, hard decision for both to decide to retire. He's simply trying to abide by that decision. But one look at how he behaves when he's back in costume in "Bloodlines," "Summit" or "Endgame" shows that he's far from absolute over the issue. And a conversation with her could have swayed him, as is fairly obvious in "Endgame" even without the dialogue we trimmed out where he flat out states that maybe they could both start being heroes again. (NOTE: We cut that dialogue both for time and because it seemed to big a clue that one of them was going to die.)
This notion that he only cares about Artemis and his family is given the lie in "Darkest" when his concern isn't simply for Artemis, but for everyone who was either captured or nearly died in the cave.
And just to be clear: we DID want to use Wally. And I think we've proven over and over that we know how to "fit" Wally in. We used him and fit him in exactly the way we wanted to use him and fit him in. You may not like it, but please do NOT subscribe your interpretations to our motivations. That's just presumptuous.
I have to say, it seems to me that you're interpreting events (and qualifying them) to suit your already existing interpretation instead of the other way around. Certainly, nothing you've argued has brought me over to your way of thinking. I just don't agree with you at all. You may not buy my explanations. Fine. But I don't buy your arguments either. They seem to lack any nuance whatsoever, taking everything presented at mere surface value and as an absolute. That was never our intent. We wanted the audience to read between the lines. Many members of our audience did. Though, of course, at least a few did not.
In any case, I am WAY tired of this topic. I keep addressing it here at ASK GREG over and over to the same two or three individuals. So let's just agree to disagree. You didn't like how we handled certain aspects of the show. I can accept that. But there's no point in continuing this discussion. Neither of us seem likely to convince the other.
I just realized that the second question I asked two days ago (about how Tom got from Avelon to Manhatten) is REALLY stupid...for some reason I was misremembering the entire situation and was thinking Tom went to Manhatten AFTER Goliath and co. got back from their trip (which makes absolutly no sense now that I remember correctly)...OOPS! Sorry. I'm verry much expecting a "Hey stupid, what the heck are you talking about?!" response to that question.
Anyway, since I don't want to clog the que with just an apology for screwing up a previous one, I'll ask a couple of actual questions too, this time regarding Brooklyn and Katana.
1. You once described their relationship as: "there's conflict." Can you elaborate (in a general sense, not specific situations...ie. they bicker a lot, they disagree on many things, ect.)?
2. I know that the real-world reason for Katana's name is the sward, but in-universe, did her clan use names? (Also, I know it's a "spoiler request," but if you feel like saying who gave her the name if it wasn't her clan, that would be awesome -- same for Foo Dog).
3. Were the parallels between the casts of the World Tour and Timedancer (ie. the lead Gargoyle: Goliath/Brooklyn; his mate: Elisa/Katana; the child: Angela/Nashville; and the beast: Bronx/Foo Dog) a deliberate decision or just a coincidence?
4. Has/will Foo Dog ever had/get a mate?
1. Watch Sam and Diane on Cheers or Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing.
2. We've established that the Ishimura Clan uses names. Whether they did back then is a SPOILER REQUEST.
3. More organic than anything. Keep in mind, it's just Brooklyn. Then it's Brooklyn, Finella and Mary. Later it's Brooklyn and Fu-Dog. Later still it's Brooklyn, Fu-Dog and Katana. Later still, it's Brooklyn, Fu-Dog, Katana and an egg. Then Brooklyn, Fu-Dog, Katana and Nashville. Then Brooklyn, Fu-Dog, Katana, Nashville and Egwardo. And that's assuming no one else temporarily joins them for some of the Dancing, a fact I'll neither confirm or deny.
4. SPOILER REQUEST.
So I bought Young Justice: Legacy and played it today. I'm going to be blunt, Greg. It was awful. I played 2 missions and stopped. I can't really come up with a single compliment. The graphics, the gameplay, movements, everything was awful. And the initial (joke?) Kid Flash dialogue about asking if the archeologist was rich made me cringe. I know the story must have been better, but I just can't see myself playing through this game.
I know this is not your fault AT ALL, but I just find it very unfortunate that a series I love so MUCH like Young Justice has been tainted by this awful awful game.
I was wondering if I would have appreciated it more had it been a mobile game, but the fact is I found the whole combat system completely counter-intuitive, I really don't know what Little Orbit was thinking.
I know it was a low budget game, but maybe Little Orbit should've tried making a side-scroller instead. This game tries to be X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance, when it is obvious that it doesn't have the resources to make a comparable game.
I really hope YJ is resurrected some day, but NOT like this.
Well, I'm not sure what to say. I'm not a gamer, myself. I have no experience in this area. Other folks seemed to have enjoyed it well enough. But I can't judge. I'm still proud of the story, and I think the game is worth supporting for the story if nothing else, and because supporting ANY official YJ product is a vote for bringing the show back.
I have another little question.
We know that the Guardians are directly selected by the Oracle for specific reasons: was there any plan to reveal the specific reasons for the C.H.Y.K.N.'s selection (in particular Nerissa)?
No specific plans, but given enough episodes...

On a semi-related note, I've found I will have space and time to sell copies of my animation teleplays at LBCC. If you're interested in buying a signed copy for $20 cash, let me know on twitter @Greg_Weisman. Because I DO take requests.
A couple questions about "O is for obedience"...
1)Before learning the truth, did Caleb ever ask Julian abouth his mother's identity?
2A)If yes, what did Julian tell him?
2B)If no, who did he think his mother was?
3)What's the reason Julian decided not to tell Caleb of his mother's identity? Was there some kind of taboo against his love with the "Mage"?
4)Why wasn't Nerissa a part in Caleb's upbringing (or at least a stable part in his upbringing, since he still knew the "Mage")?
Thanks for your time!
1. Probably.
2A. Not the truth.
2B. Never decided on the specifics of that.
3. It was, in theory, to protect Caleb from those who would seek to force the Mage to do their bidding.
4. I really don't understand what you're asking here.
was tim drake ever showen prior to the second season of young justice.
Not that I can recall.
1. Are microscopic vision and telescopic vision too advanced for Superboy?
2. Does Rocket's belt have any powers besides flight and force fields?
3. Do Lagoon Boy's tattoos give any other power besides super strength?
4. Do Wonder Girl's lasso and bracelets have any special powers?
1. Advanced? Not sure what you mean. He has both, and we've seen him use both.
2. Do you count energy absorption, which fuels flight and force fields?
3. No.
4. Not beyond the obvious.
I'm back with some questions regarding the skiff Goliath and co. rode arround on during the World Tour.
For the life of me I cannot recall whether they kept the skiff with them in Manhatten or sent it back to Avalon, or if it was ever even shown what happened to it.
1. If they did keep it, would whoever rode it next be taken back to Avalon or resume the World Tour?
2. Also, if they kept it, how did Tom get from Avalon to Manhatten?
3. Kind of a related topic, but if not I'll understand if I have to ask again later...what brought King Arthur's body to Avalon?
It wasn't shown, but you saw what happened to Arthur's skiff. The same thing happened to Goliath's. Since the skiff/Avalon "knew" it was the last stop, it sank away and returned to Avalon. Recycled, don'tcha know.
1. See above.
2. There is, by the way, more than one skiff.
3. A skiff.
And I'm sorry for flooding the queue. But this is the single most important question in the history of YJ
At what point during the 8 years while Roy was on ice did Ollie grow the 'dopey goatee'?
Honestly, haven't nailed that down.
Did another podcast with Mark and Tom at Animation Fascination. We talk Gargoyles, Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice, Rain of the Ghosts and Spirits of Ash and Foam. Here's the link:
I just realized the flaw of my last question #2. Wonder Woman and Hawkwoman were off world. I am an idiot. ;P
So, new question. Would WW and HW have attended if they were actually on Earth?
Thanks for answering Again, sorry for the derpiness.
Yes.
Rewatching Satisfaction, specifically the shower for Rachel. Took notes (yes, I took notes on a TV show when I refuse to in school.) Female Leaguers and Teammates who are missing: Sgt Marvel, Troia, Artemis, Aquagirl, Wonder Woman, and Hawkwoman.
Obviously, at this point, Artemis is 'dead', and Tula is actually dead.
1. You've previously stated that Mary Bromfield and Donna Troy didn't attend for production reasons. Is there an in-universe explanation?
2. Wonder Woman and Hawkwoman were also not in attendance. Are there production and/or in-universe reasons for this? (One could argue it was a strictly-Team party, but WW and HW would have gotten to know Rocket after she joined the League.)
3. Is there any connection between my obsession with everything you've ever done and my inability to get a girlfriend? :)
1. Yes. (Both excuses are a bit feeble, to be honest.) But I can't reveal why each didn't attend without revealing SPOILERS about their stories, so...
2. They were on Rimbor. (I thought you were taking notes.)
3. I hope not.
Hello again, Mr. Weisman. I make my glorious return to the realm of Ask Greg (bwa ha ha ha ha), by asking a few questions about Young Justice's version of Deathstroke (who is one of my favourite DC villains).
1) Has Deathstroke ever served in any branch of the military? If so, what was his rank?
2) In the comics, Slade was given superhuman abilities (healing factor, enhanced speed, strength, etc.). Is this true for Earth-16's version as well?
3) Sportsmaster was on a first-name basis with Slade. How long have they known each other?
4) Does Slade have a wife or children?
5) How did Deathstroke lose his eye?
Thanks for taking my question, and have a good day.
1. Probably.
1a. I'd have to research that.
2. I think not.
3. Long.
4. SPOILER REQUEST.
5. SPOILER REQUEST.
I'm honestly not trying to have an "ah ha! Gotcha" moment here (although it may seem like it after I ask my questions), as I am honestly curious and a little confused.
You've said that Odin was able to circumvent Oberon's rule of not stealing Avalonian artifacts from mortals because he felt that it belonged to him.
My question is:
1) Why does he believe the Eye still belongs to him after he gave it up willingly (i.e. not stolen from him)?
To put it in "mortal perspective," if a woman gives up her baby for adoption, and for whatever reason the adoptive family decides to give the baby to someone else, and the birth mother takes the baby back, thats kidnapping (i.e. theft)...even if the birth mother feels justified, reasoning that this new family isn't who she agreed to give the baby to and doesn't like how they are raising the child, if the authorities caught her, she would be punished the same as if she hadn't given birth to the baby - as she gave up all rights to the child in the first place.
Now, in Odin's case, Oberon is the authority and Odin was able to "bend" Oberon's law because he "felt" justified:
2) Does Oberon agree with Odin, that he is the rightful owner dispite having given it away a long time ago?
If so:
3) Why? Does he not see contractual agreements with mortals binding?
If not:
4) Was Odin punished for breaking the law or forgiven? (If this is a story for another day, I'll understand if you do not feel like answering this one).
1. Reversion clause.
I'm not sure I don't believe that extenuating circumstances would negate your analogy. Plus, if you gave your baby up to adoption to someone specific, I'd lay odds that in many adoption contracts, there may in fact be a clause that gives the birth parents the option of getting the child back instead of it going to an unapproved third party. But in any case, Odin is a god (from his point of view). He sure as hell wouldn't think much of your analogy.
2. I don't think Oberon knows or cares. But I tend to think he wouldn't think much of your analogy either.
3. What contract with what mortal are you referring to? Mimir was not a mortal.
4. See above.
And another couple of questions, this time regarding Matrix.
1. You've said that Matrix assimilated Dingo's armor upon merging with him. Could he have taken the form of the armor and be an exact copy or did he have to assimlate it to have all if its capabilities - and does this apply to all technology?
2) Is the Master Matrix in the future the same "being" as Matrix, a portion of it, a seperate being based ob it's technology, or is this a big-fat "spoiler request"?
1. He needs to take something apart to figure out how it works.
2. No spoilers.
I also have a few questions regarding Merlin.
1) You've said that he is capable of both mortal and Fae magic, but never both at the same time. So does he have a preferance, ie. one form of magic that he would use even if the other form could accomplish the same task?
2. Is either form easier for him (I know neither are "easy" per se), or come more naturally to him?
3a. Are the Scrolls of Merlin filled with mortal or Fae magic, or both?
3b. Are the Scrolls themselves considered Fae artifacts (like the Eye of Odin)?
4. In some legends Merlin's powers don't work well, or sontimes not at all, when over a large body of water - does this apply to Merlin in the Garg universe?
1. Eh.
2. It's situational.
3a. Neither. They were protected by a magic spell, that's all. Otherwise, they're simply a history text.
3b. No.
4. No Spoilers.
I have a few questions regarding Banshee/Molly.
1a. Is the plate that covers her mouth made of iron?
1b. If not, how does it restrict her powers?
1c. Also, if it's not iron, why did Oberon put it there instead of "decreeing" her powers not work (like the restrictions on mortal interferance)?
2. Why is the plate still there when she becomes Molly if all of her magic is lost in that form anyway?
3. Is the plate a temporary punishment or permanant - meaning it cannot be removed, even by Oberon himself?
1a. No.
1b. Oberon's power does the trick.
1c. Whim?
2. Huh? When does that happen?
3. Oberon can clearly remove it. Listen to his dialogue.
What are the religions of Asami Koizumi, Tye Longshadow, Virgil Hawkins, Roy Harper (Arsenal), and Eduardo Dorado, Jr.?
Ed is Catholic, I'm sure, by background - if not in practice. The rest I'd have to research, and I'll admit I haven't.
Sorry if this has already been asked, I couldn't find anything on this.
1. What's J'onn's relationship with Garfield? Does gar call him Uncle J'onn?
2. How did J'onn react to him? Was he happy, upset, (doubt he was) or worried?
Please answer, I'd like to know about this
1. Yep.
2. He was sympathetic.
Before I get into my questions, I would like to say I appreciate the effort you and the creative team put in for your sensory and background details on Young Justice. Personally, what keeps me coming back to Earth 16's universe is how you and the creative team have a well thought out timeline and detailed analysis to make sure where and how things occur in your show. From Justice League political relations to the structure of galactic communication to mystical dealings, these little sensory details were honestly what made the show seem more grounded to me than say any live-action superhero movie I've seen(with the exception of The Dark Knight). Of course it still requires to hold some suspension of disbelief, but rather than creating situations from coincidence with no consequence was very effective way of handling how superheroes affect their world. Of course superheroes and extraordinary crises are the forefront of any superhero media interpretation, but what engulfs me completely is realizing the writers know how their world works from inside and out. Your answering fan questions and creating a personal timeline for your DC universe is something I wish to aspire to if ever I can head stories either of my own or retell a version of someday.
And since I'm very fond of the occult and all things mystical, I would like to ask you a few questions on how pantheons affect their domains.
1. Are the various pantheons of Gods on Earth brought into being through faith, worship, and prayer, or are they born through other unspecified means?
2. Is sorcery not an earth-bound phenomenon and can be practiced on other planets? I assume that is the case, given L-Ron's recognition of Zatana's powers.
3. Do other planets with civilizations have their own Gods that are corporeal? As in their existence is proven, similar in vein to Wonder Woman's Greek pantheon and other biblical-based figures on Earth.
4. To what extent are the ramifications of pantheon crises? Their effects wouldn't extend outside of the planet, would they? I am usually confused with the way DC cosmology is structured. In the Sandman, everything seems pretty much simple as everything in existence seems to have its own system. In Lucifer and various other comics dealing with Judeo-Christian religion, it is implied their actions put the fate of the entire universe at risk. Not to insinuate that your universe follows any similar guidelines in regards to other media representations, but I would just like to know some form of clarification on this front given your exceptional talent at making almost every element from DC Comics fit.
Thank you and please take care!
1. Spoiler request.
2. You pretty much answered your own question.
3. Odds are, yes.
4. I honestly don't think I understand the question. Or if I do, it just seems to depend on so many factors, I don't see how I could ever give a specific answer to it.
Before I ask my question, I should warn you that I'm from Finland and while my English is pretty good, I make mistakes all the time. So excuse me, if my text is completely unreadable. Anyway, onto my question!
You have always said that SSM takes place in the larger Marvel Universe, even thought you couldn't do any direct references to that in the actual show. So I was wondering, that while the concept of Venom Symbiote makes perfect sense in the universe full of Cosmis beings, time travel, made-up science, magic and whatnot, it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb when you place it to Spidey's more down to earth (pun not intended) "personal universe." So were there ever any plans (even in very early development) to update Venom something more realistic?
Well, first off I don't agree with the premise of your question, but basically, what you saw on Spectacular Spider-Man, is what you got.
FYI, your English seems pretty flawless.
my question must have gotten deleted last time i asked this, because i cant find it anywhere. it was part of a post with a bunch of questions, but this one is the only one i really want to know about, so i hope this one wasnt the one that made it not go through
after his journey through time, does Brooklyn still consider himself a rookery brother to Lexington and Broadway?
also, since he is a generation older than Goliath, does he still consider himself his rookery son?
would he now technically be a rookery uncle to any or all three of them, and Angela?
if so, how does he view his relationship to Hudson, since they cant technically be rookery brothers? (like cousins mabey?)
1. Yes.
2. He never did, so no.
3. No.
4. He still sees Hudson as a mentor/father/grandfatherly figure.
You've said that "sides were taken" during the war between Mab and Oberon.
I have a few questions regarding this conflict:
1) Were the "sides" you refered to composed of, lets say "morally ambiguous," Children like the Wierd Sisters, Banshee, Anansi, and Raven versus the relatively benign Children like Puck, Odin, Coyote, and Grandmother?
2) Does Oberon hold any animosity for those who sided against him, ranging from general distrust to outright distain? Does he forgive any of them completely?
3) Do any who took Mab's side still prefer to be refered to as "Mab's Children?"
4) Were any Children who fought against Oberon imprisioned along with Mab?
These are all spoiler questions. No comment.
I rewatched "Sanctuary" recently, and I have a little doubt. When Goliath sees Thailog, he doesn't seem really surprised (I mean, he is suprised to see him there, but he doesn't seem suprised to see him alive): did Xanatos alert him, somewhere between "Double Jeopardy" and "Avalon Part 1", that their "child" was probably still alive?
No.
I've checked the archives for this question to have been asked, but found nothing on the subject, so if this has been asked and answered already, I appologize in advance.
How long is a typical "reign" (for lack of a better term) for a clan leader - barring that leader being killed in battle, relenquishing the role early, being forcibly removed, etc.?
If you feel like pinning down a specific (which I verry much doubt, but hey, fingers crossed), how long did Hudson lead the Scotish clan before turning leadership over to Goliath?
I'm going to hazard a guess of arround 50 years...basing that assumption (and that's all it really is) on him/her being between at least old enough to mate (40) and hatching their last egg (90) - but probably older than both of those "landmarks"...am I even close?
I don't think there's a typical length, certainly not a set term. Death or retirement come when they come.
As to Hudson specifically, I don't have that information here at this office. Sorry.
Hey Greg I was wondering where do you feel you've stepped most out of your comfort zone as a writer. sorry for not using a question mark my keyboard doesn't seem to have one.
What kind of keyboard doesn't have a question mark? That's just... bizarre.
Anyway, I try to challenge myself all the time. Writing the novels was WAY out of my comfort zone, and even in that, I challenged myself by creating a fairly unique narrator.
Hey Greg,
One of my favorite clans in the Garg universe is the Mayan clan, especially because of the magic pendants. Now I've always been one of those "magic comes with a price" believers, and I loved it when you said the consequence of wearing the pendant was that they age at a Human rate.
But then I was perusing through the archives recently and discovered that you have since changed your mind on that, because doing the math was just too hard to calculate.
But don't Gargs only age at twice the rate of Humans? Wouldn't you only have to divide everything by two?
And as far as I can see it would inly be the breeding cycle that would get a little confusing, but it could still work. Assuming that they pendants arent given to a successor untill they reach maturity...a female pendant wearer would lay her first egg alongside her peers, then lay her second egg the same year the first one hatches, and finally lay her third egg when her peers are laying their second.
Now the second egg would hatch in the "off season"...but only if they even laid that egg. I would think that since a Gargoyle's fertility is attuned with the Earth's cycle, that only the two cycles that match up with the others could even result in an egg.
Anyway, it's past 3 am so my math could be off, but I think it's solid.
I just can't address this now. (Because the math is overwhelming, and my head's just not there at this time. Too full of other projects.) Let's leave it as an open question, until I get back to writing Gargoyles, someday.
Hey Greg! I've watched and absolutely adore the work you've put into both Spectacular and YJ. You're an amazing producer who definitely respects the franchises that you have worked on and deserve more than second-season cancellations :P
Fan appreciation out of the way:
1) How is creating Star Wars Rebels' story and characters compared to YJ's and Spectacular's, considering those were in alternate continuities rather than part of official canon?
2) (If you're allowed to answer this) How much input is there from the higher-ups in Disney/people in control of the Star Wars franchise for the show? (I'm saying this because I was disappointed with Ultimate Spider-Man, also controlled by Disney, which had many good names attached to it, but ultimately felt forced and plainly interfered with by corporate executives who wanted the show to pander to kids.)
I'm looking forward to rebels and hope you have enough creative freedom to work your magic! Thanks for answering!
1. It was very different. But it's impossible to discuss without spoiling. Ask again after the first season airs.
2. I have no opinion on Ultimate, which I haven't seen. But rest assured, Lucasfilm was calling the shots on Rebels.
OK, I know that usually this question would count as SPOILER REQUEST, but...
What happened between Black Manta and Sha'lain'a that brought to Kaldur's conception(because you said that it wasn't rape)?
I ask you this because, even if YJ was to come back, I seriously doubt you'd be allowed to talk about it.
Spoiler Request. No comment.
