Hello greg

You previously said that you don't like gran finales and you don't intend to really give closure to any of your shows/stories. Not even gargoyles that as you described it is your "baby" even if you don't own it.

Does that mean that we will always get cliffhanger endings from your tv show when they get canceled?

What about your new book series, will it end in a cliffhanger too?

As much as I am a fan of your stories Greg, It feels empty not to have any closure at all.

No offense but basic story telling has beginning-conflict-resolution and as fans we never get to see a resolution of the overall plot.

I mean having an ending that gives the illusion that "the story never truly ends" is great (that's not what I am critical of).

But I think that not having an ending that acknowledges that the story has to end for real life reasons(maybe becuase you simply can't write stories forever, becuase you aren't getting more episodes, becuase you have to move on etc)... is disrespectuful to your fans that expect to have a complete story.

Take JLU unlimited ending. It even ended with wonderwoman saying "...and the adventure continues" and even left two unresolved plot points, But at the same time it ended the main plots and acted as a send off/good bye to it's fans and it didn't feel empty.

Sorry for being so critical, you are a big inspiration and even if I don't agree with you always I think you are a fantastic story teller (an inspiration for me in fct) and I am planing on buying our new book.

Greg responds...

I NEVER leave a season with a cliffhanger.

I ALWAYS leave a season with open-ended closure.

I don't mean to sound disrespectful to you or any of my fans, but that's how my mind works. If you don't like it, I can't really help you, because you'd be asking me to change the way I tell stories.

But perhaps we're not so far apart. You cite the JLU ending, which I haven't seen. But you state that, in essence, it has open-ended closure, even noting it had unresolved plot points. That's EXACTLY what I do at the end of EVERY season. Not everything is going to be tied up into a neat knot, but every major plot point of that season will be, as happened at the end of Gargoyles, WITCH, Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice.

So what exactly are you looking for from me that's any different?

And thank you for buying RAIN OF THE GHOSTS. It's much appreciated! Sincerely!!

I was very sorry to hear that Young Justice would not be continuing past the second season. But for this reason, I looked forward to Endgame all the more, wanting to see how everything wrapped up.

My question is this: was there a change in the animation technique, style, or staff for Endgame? It may sound odd, but the animation seemed less rigid in Endgame than the rest of the series. It's hard to explain. If you've watched Static Shock, there was a certain 'rubbery' quality to the animation in seasons 1 and 2 that wasn't present in the rest of the series. That's kind of what Endgame reminded me of, specifically when Megan and Conner were talking during the League's appeal.

Thank you very much for your work on YJ. You created a show worth watching, and as an amateur writer, the entire show was an inspiration to me. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

Greg responds...

I honestly don't know what you're talking about. The studio that animated "Endgame" was one of the two studios we used throughout both seasons.

Some episodes looked better than others, of course. And some sequences within episodes looked better than others. But that's the nature of the business.

Hello, Greg!

1. What made you decide to have Tye Longshadow and Asami Koizumi have a "thing"--according to Virgil--with one another? (I'm a fan of the idea of them together, don't get me wrong, but why not have her pursue a romantic relationship with Virgil or Ed?)

Greg responds...

Reasons.

But mostly, it was what the characters were telling us worked.

In "Endgame", Superboy refers to Robin by his real name (Tim). Clearly Superboy knows his secret identity, so does Batman not want Tim to keep it a secret from the team? (like Dick did in the first season). Thanks for your time!

I'm a little puzzled by this statement. Cap's powers come from the gods so it's not like he can go to the gym and work out, or can he? Has season 2 Captain Marvel suddenly become stronger or faster. Is so, how and why?

Young Justice Legacy

Want more stories set in the EARTH-16 Universe of Young Justice and Young Justice: Invasion?

Then vote with your wallet! Go out and buy a copy or six of YOUNG JUSTICE LEGACY!!! This new video game from Little Orbit is canon material set during the five-year gap, between Seasons One and Two.

In addition, if it sells well, Little Orbit is very interested in using their existing license to make a sequel game set during "Season Three".

Here's what Little Orbit's own Matthew Scott had to say in an e-mail to myself and fellow YJ Producer Brandon Vietti:

Hi guys,

I just want to send a big thank you for all your support helping us launch Young Justice: Legacy.

Not sure if you saw the World Finest review:
http://www.worldsfinestonline.com/WF/youngjustice/releases/games/legacy/

The review certainly seems to have picked up on the main aspects of the project that we were trying to achieve.

My favorite quote:
"This game is so full of revelations and bombshell moments. Between that and all the new information you're getting, it's like we got an epic mini-series event, and not just a cheap cash grab video game. One nuance that I loved from the show was how actual mythology was incorporated in the ongoing story plots, and that carries over here."

BTW - In your interview on Nerdy Show [ http://nerdyshow.com/2013/11/episode-160-the-legacy-of-young-justice/ ], you mentioned that you couldn't speak for us. But I will go on record saying we would absolutely do a Young Justice: Legacy sequel set in the season 3 period. Just need to see how sales are for this title.

Thanks,
Matthew Scott

A Flash Fan writes...

Greg,

Thank you again for answering my questions. A few comments I had...

1. When I asked about the grotto and the difference between League and Team members there you said

Greg responds... 1. No. It's about specific circumstances. Keep in mind, these are heroes who are dead (or thought to be, as in the case of Artemis). Nothing on the memorial says HOW they died. By this time, you know how Ted Kord perished -and it wasn't on a Justice League mission. You have no idea yet how Robin or Aquagirl passed. For all you know, the two of them might have been walking down the street in their secret identities, when a piano, a safe and an anvil fell from above. They both dodged the piano and the anvil, but the safe got Jason and then
Tula had a heart attack.

I am sorry, but I just had to say that you made me laugh with the last part! You have great humor and a way of putting things together so accurately... Immediately I thought back to the scene in Alienated where Aqualad is angry at his "former" team for letting Tula die, and I could imagine the scene you described like Nightwing saying "Kaldur they were on a mission and...well Jason got hit by the safe and Tula had a heart attack on their way to Bibbo's..." Anyway I just wanted to thank you...it made my day.

2. You said before the memorials the grotto was used for contemplation by the League? What about...battles? Family? The pizza delivery?

3. What I meant about THE Scene was a moment that could express all about the series in one moment. Like the core or heart of the work. The closest one for me of Season 2 may be when the entire Team gathers and fights in Summit or the very nice panoramic of heroes in Endgame, but for some reason I don't feel it as defined when Superboy and Robin fight Superman and Batman in Season 1. Did that make it a bit clearer?

4. You had reponded to someone else about providing a moral leson is important for you in your shows. I just wanted to thank you for that as well because some Tv today is really bad and doesn't care. It's great but do you think smoking is the worst problem? I totally agree with you but I think there may beother bigger things like war and poverty...well the little things really do make a diference, don't they?

Greg responds...

1. Happy to. (Some fans don't appreciate my sense of humor here quite as much. Glad you did!)

2. The grotto wasn't used for battles or pizza delivery. And Family doesn't gain automatic access to the Cave. But you could eat pizza in the grotto, I guess.

3. I've forgotten what the question is... If you're asking is their one scene that defines the entire season, I'm not sure. My mind doesn't work that way, I suppose. But there are a number of emblematic scenes, including the two you mentioned. Maybe Nightwing's "Business as usual" line?

4. I'm not sure about providing specific moral lessons so much as having a point of view. As for things like WAR and POVERTY, those are very big concepts, and there's not much a cartoon show can do about them EXCEPT have that point of view. But SMOKING is what the network's call an "imitatable action" that I think has serious consequences for impressionable kids. Personally, I have no desire to contribute to the ridiculous notion that smoking is cool.

Windona writes...

Hey! Since the season is over, I've got several questions about the Beetles and the Reach.

1) The Scientist- I've got to admit I love this character. I just want to know how you came up with her- she seems to be like the comic book Dawur in providing the common sense, yet a little more engaged in things (I really liked her interactions with Kaldur, as that's what I'm basing this assessment on).

2) Speaking of names; I noticed that you didn't include the serial numbers for the scarabs from the comics (most famously [relatively speaking] Khaji Da). Was it cut for time, not being an element that was particularly cared for, or something else entirely?

3) Again about the scarabs; Black Beetle made mention as if Green Beetle's scarab was sentient, and Blue Beetle's scarab certainly is. However, it was unclear to me if Black Beetle's scarab was or not. It doesn't seem like the Reach would have a reason for their enforcer's armor to have an AI, but I was unable to tell if the line "Freedom is overrated" was Black Beetle or his scarab. So, assuming my rambling didn't bore you to tears, my question is; is Black Beetle's scarab sentient?

4) When On-Mode, was the scarab ever the one speaking through Jaime? I ask as during 'The Runaways', he seemed to act more natural and had an accent for part of it, and had to explain what happened to Green Beetle, implying the Ambassador wasn't watching him. Also, I assume the Ambassador has better things to do then remote control Jaime and B'azz all the time.

Thank you preemptively for answering all my questions! Have a happy spring, and I cannot wait for season 3 (because I have my Blue Lantern ring on praying that it will get renewed).

Greg responds...

1. Mostly, she served a necessary function for us. But even a functional character needs a personality. She just made sense to develop out of the Reach concept.

2. It didn't naturally come into the specific story we were telling.

3. It is. But the two of them were very in synch.

4. Yeah, that's pretty much the deal.

Hello Greg,

I actually had a question about 'the Runaways'. How long were they on the run before they got snatched up by the REACH? Was all their kidnappings practically instant like Tye's?

Thank you for working on Young Justice. I can't tell you howe much I loved it!

Greg responds...

Well, you saw Tye's abduction, and Virgil told you about his. (He was never really a runaway at all.) Eduardo's story is pretty straight forward too. I'll admit, I haven't actually figured out when exactly he ran away from his grandparents' home to seek his father, but it wasn't too long before he was abducted. (Though it probably wasn't quite as instantaneous as with Tye.)

That just leaves Asami. She was on her own for awhile. Details would be a SPOILER REQUEST. But she wasn't just instantly grabbed up like Tye.

It was brought to my attention that you guys had outlined, or at least planned for, a three season story, with each season building off the next. Yet I'm learning that your reception of only twenty episodes for season 2 instead of the desired 26 led to a condensing of content and story; ie. less screen time for certain characters, deleted scenes or dialogues, etc.

I was curious, now that season 2's finale has aired, if you'd be willing to share any episode ideas or deleted scenes from season 2 that didn't get to make the cut due to time constraint or different priorities, much like you did with the Endgame cut lines.

And, because it needs to be said, awesome job on the show guys. Easily the best DC animated show since JLU, and easily in the top five best superhero shows to date. A travesty that it's been cancelled, but I'm grateful we got to see what we did, even if it was cut short.

Greg responds...

I've shared everything significant that was created for Season Two and was actually scripted but got cut for time in an individual episode. It's not like we thought we had 26 while we were making the season. We knew the pickup was for 20 from the moment we got picked up. (Or, more accurately, the original pickup was only a guarantee of 10, but with a likely increase to 20. So we planned for 20.)

I have a question about the Reach.

Why exactly do they refer to Humams as "meat"?

Are any of these theories correct?

my own theory:
a) they are insectisoid with exoskeitons, therefore they dont have internal muscles, or "meat" themselves?

possible theory based on Mongul telling Captian Atom (paraphrasing here) "your lucky im killing you now...you dont know what they plan to
do to you":
b) They were going to eat people.

c) Are both of these true?

or d) is it a mistranslation of a word they use in their native language, but has no english equivilent?

Thanks.

Mostly a. Maybe some b, although that wasn't a priority. So maybe some c. And maybe a little d, while we're at it. But mostly a.

1. In the Arctic was it an oversight that the Team, particularly Artemis and Nightwing, were not wearing warmer clothes than their regular costumes? Even for a short time it must have been freezing I think, and they were in warmer costumes in the simulated mission in Failsafe.

2. At the beginning of the Season 2 we learned Superboy did not change externally but internally, however we never heard about it again toward the end. Does he still age in this fashion? Was it just mentioned to add some info or is there something else?

3. Does Superboy not like mirrors because it reminded him too much of how he is yet isn't like Superman, and does he use mirrors in Season2 or eventually?

Okay so I'll start off with the Summit. When the ambassdador asked where the other members of the light were, ra's replied that their more public members were doing damage control on the reach's reputation. So that clearly means luthor and queen bee, but what about klarion? Now to me he dosnet really fall into the category of a "public member" or "damage control", so why didnt ra's give him an excuse? Was it

A. The Reach had no prior knowledge of klarion?
B. The Reach did know about klarion and were famailar enough with him to know that him showing up at the summit would depend if he felt like it?
Or C. The Reach are uninterested in what klarion does because he only creates chaos, whereas the reach want control?

Now on the topic of klarion(who is a great character) what is his relationship with vandel? It seems to me out of all the members of the light, klarion respects vandel the most or at least to whatever extent he is capable of respect, seeing as how he saved only vandel at the summit and has worked well with him the past. Giving that vandel has been around for 50k years, im guessing he may have met klarion at one point. Now i know you dont tell stories here, but i would to know if my theory is correct.

Final question did klarion go with vandel to apocolaspe? We only saw vandel leave and enter the war world so was anyone else with him?

I think Ra's response put the Reach off that scent in any case.

I'm not going to go into details about Klarion and Vandal's relationship. Nor about specifics not revealed.

I support this show 100%, I woke up every Saturday and watched every episode of season 2 and then bought them all on iTunes, but I must say it was quite disappointing in terms of character development. I know you've said season 2 was a story driven season as opposed to season 1, but I mean I expected a few things to be addressed. In True Colors, I expected since Robin was leading the team we would get some insight into why he is so insecure about leading and maybe go into Jason Todd's death and it's impact on the Bat Family. But no, he only leads for a few minutes and then we move right along into the Green Beetle storyline. When Artemis and Miss Martian were fixing Aqualad's mind, I expected we would maybe get a flashback on Tula's death and its impact. But no, we cut away for an episode and then all of a sudden we come back and he's cured.
My question is, were those things originally supposed to be developed and then had to be cut to fit in 20 episodes, or did you only care about the story to be told (which was still great and far superior to many other shows getting renewed)

Greg responds...

We did what we wanted to do in the time allotted. Had we had more time and episodes there's no doubt that you would have had more detail on all sorts of things. (Though I can't guarantee our priorities would have matched up with yours.)

What was the purpose of the Tim/Cassie pairing? It had no development in the show and had no impact on the story whatsoever. The only thing they appeared to have in common was that both of their characters were horribly underused and we have no idea about either of their origins. At least we got to see Cassie's interaction with WW, we never saw Tim and Batman's relationship. And instead of showing how they got together, we just randomly see them holding hands and then cut to yet another Miss Martian/Superboy moment...

Greg responds...

The purpose was to show that life goes on and that things happen off-screen. We couldn't give every character equal time. (Though I'm not sure I'd agree that they were 'horribly underused'.) But we could show glimpses of what was going on with them.

That's right, we have FOURTEEN members of the cast, plus our talent coordinator, voice & casting director, both producers and three of the writers! This YJ Panel is really a "don't miss" endeavor.

The second panel is at 3pm in Room 102B:

DISNEY AFTERNOON
Life is like a hurricane at Long Beach Comic-Con! It's been almost 25 years since Disney Afternoon debuted on television screens, and the impact of "the golden age" of Disney TV Animation is still felt today. Get ready to "spin it" with Greg Weisman (producer, creator of Gargoyles) Jymn Magon (co-creator Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, creator of Talespin), Bob Schooley (co-creator, Kim Possible, co-ex producer Penguins of Madagascar), Mark McCorkle (Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, co-creator of Kim Possible) and Rob Paulsen (voice actor, Darkwing Duck, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Animaniacs) for raucous recollections and never-before-heard stories! Moderated by Aaron Sparrow (Darkwing Duck: The Duck Knight Returns)

Both panels are gonna be a lot of fun! Come and see!!

First of all, a big Thank You to you and Brandon for creating this show and hopefully we will return to Earth 16 even after YJ Legacy is done.

After having gone through both seasons of YJ, I have the idea that this was about the young heroes crippling the final stage plans of the Light without really destroying them.

First season it seems Savage wanted the League to act as puppets when the Reach would call and then the Light would exterminate the more important league members by convicting them for criminal acts on Rimbor.

Second season was about using the Reach technology to develop the human race into a 'meta'-human race and then making the Reach leave Earth.

I hope I got the major portion of the Light's goals for evolution right. And if so, you guys have nailed it by showing why Vandal Savage, Lex Luthor and Ra's Al Ghul would join together to both limit(Ra's) and evolve(Vandal) the human race so that it didn't have to depend on aliens(Lex) to be their saviour.

Ok,rant over. Would really love to see Darkseid's influence on the Light's plans and hopefully, given the strong reaction to CN's cancelling of your show, will get the chance.

Hopefully, when this Light arc will be over, we will get more of the 'lost years' in between.

Again, thank you for this show.

You're welcome! Thank YOU for watching!

Hello Greg,

First and foremost thank you for such an amazing job on Young Justice. My question is, normally Artemis Crock looks Eurasian. But when she is using the Glamour Charm, she has been described by some as a "pale skinned Caucasian young woman with black hair." While others perceive Artemis having her almond shaped eyes and sharp features remaining make her look more like an East Asian young woman. Does the GC make Artemis Crock purposely look more Caucasian or Asian?

Greg responds...

Well, we thought she looked Asian. But my main hope is that she just looked consistently Tigress.

I have been a huge Young Justice fan since the very first episode "Independence Day". I instantly fell in love with Wally from the moment he came on and I had the same reaction when Artemis made her debut in "Infiltrator". So you can image how whelmed I was when they sparked up a romance! I love them! When the second season started I was devastated that they weren't in it. When they showed up in "Salvage" and we found out they were living together, my heat melted! I was so overwhelmed with happiness! The second season was excellent and the characters were brilliant! It was fantastic all the way until the death of Wally. I cried so hard and I felt like my heart was crumbling. I kept hoping all the way until the credits that maybe somehow he could come back. I couldn't sleep that night because poor, sweet Wally was all I could think about. The first season ended all nicely tied together with a bow on top, so I thought that's how season 2 would be. To my despair it wasn't so. Everything in "Endgame" was brilliant except for Wally's death. I don't want Young Justice to end with a taste of sadness in my heart. I don't want to be 60 and look back on Young Justice and feel sorrow. Please, I wish from the bottom of my crying heart, that there can be another season of this great show and Wally can come back and be reunited with Artemis and my heart can be whole again. Please let there be hope for Wally's return in a third season. Please.

Greg responds...

I'm afraid it's not up to me. I wish it was.

"Summit" questions

1. Why did Vandal Savage safely deposit Canary, Black Lightning, and Captain Marval on the Watchtower, rather than killing them or throwing them into the Warworld's stasis pods?

2. Was the Brain captured along with Black Manta?

Greg responds...

1. Of what use is killing them? And why would he want to keep them? Remember, Savage doesn't think of himself as a "villain". Just as a pragmatist.

2. Yes.

Hey Greg, Congrats on your second season finale :)

1. Roughly how long does it take to complete an episode?

2. When Wally was disappearing he said Artemis/Mom and Dad are going to kill me, did he not realize he was already "dying"? or was something else going on that we don't know about yet? :(

3. Do you think we (the fans) and all of our campaigning and fighting will even make a difference. Do you think season 3 is an achievable goal? if so, what else can we do? how can we win this one?

Greg responds...

1. From development to completion about ten months.

2. He wasn't being literal.

3. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

I'd like to point out that Wally was also absent from the last six issue arc of the comic. You do realize this, right?

Greg responds...

Well, Wally appeared. But Kid Flash didn't participate. And, yes, of course, I realize it. I wrote them.

Kid Flash-Artemis fan writes...

Loved the season finale of YJ, though Wally apparently dying was like a knife to the heart of myself and my little brother, especially since DC has been very unkind to Wally West in general. Still, the way it happened makes me hopeful that he was simply sent to another dimension or something and he would have returned in season 3, perhaps with the KE he absorbed making him as fast as his relatives.

Questions:
"Endgame"
1. With the evidence the Team had in "Summit" connecting Luthor to the Light and bringing the Reach to Earth in the first place, how can he be a serious contender for UN Secretary General?
2. How was the League able to round up people like the Runaways and Blue Devil on such short notice?
3. Were you originally planning to have characters like Donna Troy appear in the Metropolis wide shot?

General
4. How long did it take the Team to learn that "Artemis" was Artemis' real name?
5. Did Artemis ever kill anyone before she joined the Team as part of her "training"?

Greg responds...

1. How did they connect Luthor from Summit?

2. Blue Devil is an ally of the League. I'm sure they have ways of contacting him. The Runaways were contacted through Arsenal.

3. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

4. Depends which member of the Team you're talking about.

5. No.
